Staller Estate Winery near Delavan produces several varieties of wine using grapes from its own vineyards.
Studio Winery
It’s tempting to think Studio Winery suffers an identity crisis. The venue offers music, art and wine, and doubles as a recording studio and gallery, and more. In addition to making wine, owner Doug Jackson is a self-described weekend warrior of a musician who plays keyboards with blues and funk band Hobie and the Leftovers. Studio Winery is at 401 Sheridan Springs Road in Lake Geneva. Take West Main Street to Center Street and turn right on East Sheridan Springs Road, and you’re there. Regardless of everything else at Studio Winery, the wine plays center stage. “Music studio, art studio, wine studio,” Jackson said. “That’s how we decided to put it together. Wine is job No. 1, but the art and music are definitely nice additions.” Quality will always trump quantity at Studio Winery. Jackson said his production will never hit that of some state wineries, but did say production is steadily increasing. Jackson prefers wine produced in the French tradition. His Pinot Noir tastes less California and more provincial. “I like the old world style,” Jackson said. “It’s very Burgundian in style. I like the way the French have been at it for over 800 years. It’s very simple. It’s elegant. It’s light.” It is also one of 19 wines available at Studio Winery –www.studiowinery. com

The Bottle Shop
Wine can be enjoyed outside year-round at The Bottle Shop, 617 W. Main St., Lake Geneva. The airy patio defines the shop – and it is a shop and not a store, according to owner Elizabeth Tumas. Tumas recently celebrated a year in her location. The store was previously known as Pop More Corks. She changed the name, and also started offering beer, spirits, soda and gift items. “I worked for a wine distributor for about 10 years, and watched a lot of stores and restaurants be successful,” Tumas said. “I knew that someday I wanted my own business, but I didn’t really know what. “The opportunity presented itself – the former owner was a customer of mine – and he invited me to buy his store.” Tumas said she loves the building and location, and admits there isn’t enough space for all the wine she wants to carry. She knows wine through and through, and offers it in the forms and quantities people want. “I’ve watched a lot of people be successful and not successful in my 10, now 11 years, of being in business,” Tumas said. “The average consumer doesn’t want to be geeked-out – they just want to enjoy the experience, (which is) why is why I chose the form of the shop I do today.”

Staller Estate Winery
Wendy Staller, co-owner of Staller Estate Winery, jokes that her job affords her the opportunity to drink at work. She set out to be a pharmacist when she went into the sciences – she double-majored in biology and chemistry at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater – but her career choice evolved. The dynamic nature of grapes keeps Staller interested in wine. “It’s always going to be different,” Staller said. “The wine is always going to change. You’re never going to get the same growing season, there’s always going to be a variety in how your wines are going to taste.” Staller Estate is at W8896 Highway A, Delavan, and is a 30-minute drive west on Highway 50 from Lake Geneva. Staller said she gets grapes from a number of locations, including onsite, and struggles against the upper Midwest’s short growing season. Vintners get a growing season of about 12 weeks for grapes in this climate.
Buyers have a large selection of wines from which to choose at Staller Estate Winery.

Good wine and good friends make for an enjoyable outing at Staller Estate Winery near Delavan.
Staller produces 15 varieties of wine and port using those grapes, and relishes every step. “I enjoy everything,” Staller said. “It doesn’t matter whether we’re picking grapes, bottling wines – I enjoy every aspect of it.”
Apple Barn Orchard and Winery
Wisconsin gained statehood in 1848. The farm on which Apple Barn Orchard and Winery is located dates to 1846. Apple Barn Orchard and Winery is at W6384 Sugar Creek Road, Elkhorn. Apple Barn is 20 minutes west of Lake Geneva via Highway 12. Judy and Steve Jacobson and vintner Jake Dreff eschew grapes and produce varieties of wines made from fruits and berries. According to Apple Barn’s web site –applebarnorchardandwinery.com – the winery produces apple, pear and strawberry wine, and variations from raspberries, cherries, blueberries, rhubarb, blackberries and cranberries. Judy said they typically produce around 11 wines. The total is sometimes as high as 15 and low as eight, and is seasonal. Pear cider is also available, and plum wine might be making a return. Steve noted that a lot of people make very good wines, but getting people through the door is the real test. The farm schedule forces Apple Barn into a bit of a conundrum among its local competition. “Most our wines are made in the winter months, before summer, and fall is labeling and bottling,” Judy said. “We’re the only winery that probably doesn’t do wine tours.”

ÆppelTreow Winery and Distillery
Blossoms like this yield the fruit that is turned into wine at Apple Barn Orchard and Winery in Elkhorn.
“ÆppelTreow” is Old English, and is a play on words for “true to the apple” or “apple truth,” according to owner Charles McGonegal. The name is pronounced “Apple true.” ÆppelTreow is at 1072 288th Ave., Burlington, and is a 25-minute drive from downtown Lake Geneva. ÆppelTreow is on the web at http://aeppeltreow.com. ÆppelTreow is Wisconsin’s only winery and distillery. It is well-known for producing perry, which is pear cider produced in the English tradition. “I do very clean fermentations, and I have learned how to manage the pears,” McGonegal said. “We’re one of the few orchards in the country that grow old English perry pears.” The pears are specifically to be used for producing perry, and offer properties and flavors that can’t be faked by using other pears. McGonegal said he imagined ÆppelTreow as a fruit winery, but the facility produces cider, perry and spirits. “I think that Wisconsin can grow a better apple than it can a better grape,” McGonegal said. “I admire the folks growing their own grapes, but I find through personal experience they make very good brandy.”

CLASSIC AUTO LOVERS GET THEIR FIX AT ELKHORN, JEFFERSON SHOWS
CARS
by Christoper Bennett CORRESPONDENT
Christmas will come early this year for car aficionados who attend the Fall Jefferson Auto Swap Meet and Car Show Sept. 23 through 25. It is the perfect tonic for those whose hobby is all things collector automobile, and offers one final day in the sun with the car they love – either showing it off or searching for parts or just talking shop – before their steel chariots are stored safely away from the icy grind of a Wisconsin winter. If car guys play Cinderella for a day, this is their ball, and they’re watching the clock tick to midnight and thoughts of snow flurries – weather that is akin to poison for any self-respecting vintage automobile owner. The event is at the Jefferson County Fairgrounds. The venue is PHOTOS BY CHRISTOPHER BENNETT Spirit of Geneva Lakes

Rich Krueger owns Haudensheid Funeral Home in Cuba City, and lives in Hazel Green. The area is slightly more than two hours due west of Lake Geneva. Krueger is a licensed mortician in both Wisconsin and Illinois. His family counts its time in the funeral business in generations, and in his spare time, Rich restores gas pumps and other gas station memorabilia. On Aug. 6 Krueger set up shop at Madison Classics’ Summer Elkhorn Auto Swap Meet and Car Show at the Walworth County Fairgrounds. Across two tents he hawked wares that reminded visitors of road trips from their childhood, and carried on in friendly, easy fashion with passersby.
Krueger said he’s gone to Madison Classics shows in Jefferson for 25 years and in Elkhorn for 17 years. The shows afford him opportunity to reach those who most want his restored pumps and gas station memorabilia. They’re maybe older or younger, but everyone likes the idea of remembering going to the gas station with grandpa, and I got a pop and he got gas.” Krueger said he will sit and chat for as long as folks like, and said it is cathartic for him and his new friends.
The show experience Madison Classics shows carry a friendly air and a touch of class, something not lost on Krueger and other vendors and participants. “I’ve always thought they are outstanding,” Krueger said. “They put on a very classy show. I like to give them credit for what they do.” Krueger said he attends four shows per year. He attends Madison Classics’ spring and fall shows in Jefferson, the summer show in Elkhorn and Autorama in Beloit. “I’ll say it again – I’ve said it many times – they’re really a class act,” Krueger said. “They keep it pretty clean, and I admire that. There’s a lot more guys that feel the same way I do.” Timothy Dieball, owner of Powdersports Motorcoating in Delavan, displayed a rainbow of brightly colored, powder-coated intake manifold covers at the summer Elkhorn show. participation to the spring and fall Jefferson shows, the Elkhorn summer show and Autorama. “I like these shows because they are close to me and my customer base and you always get a good turnout,” Dieball said. “I get the best return for the dollar. I get the most business out of these shows, mostly because these shows are for people
still working on their cars.” Dieball said he’s been doing powder coating for 15 years, and said his business limits the time he can devote to a hobby car. He now derives joy from seeing his work on the cars of customers. “I enjoy it, seeing my work on most of the cars you see at the shows, and people thanking me for my help and for making
their car win a trophy, or just making it look better than they thought possible,” Diebold said. It is common for cars to start lining up during the dark of morning, waiting for entry to the show or swap meet, during the days of the fall Jefferson car show. Geneva National members spearhead fundraiser After attending college in 2009, Dick and Janice Zagorski’s youngest son opted to follow his dream to serve in the U.S. Army. “When he became a Green Beret two years later, we started to get involved in various warrior foundations,” said Dick Zagorski, a member of the Geneva National Golf Club and year-round Geneva National resident. Geneva National’s head golf professional Bryan Brotchie introduced the Zagorskis to his father, Craig, a retired Air Force special tactics colonel and member of the board of directors for the Special Operations Warrior Foundation, which provides a college education for all children of special operations soldiers killed in action. “We met the people and really embraced the values of the SOWF – including the fact that 94 percent of the monies raised go directly to the families of the fallen,” said Dick Zagorski. After three years of appealing to friends for donations by mail, the Zagorskis received an offer last year from fellow Geneva National member, Kevin Maher, who proposed holding an impromptu golf fundraiser. Twenty-four golfers showed, and combined, the group raised more than $17,000 for Special Operations Warrior Foundation. After that event, the Zagorskis chose to open the golf fundraiser to the entire Geneva National membership this year. With the help of two other Geneva National couples – Steve and Kim Schroeppel and Don and Suzie Miller – they organized golf, dinner and an auction at Geneva National that brought in more than $80,000 this month. the donations keep coming. “This is such a testimony to the Geneva National community,” said Zagorski, who says the generosity of the This is such a Geneva National membership supported his mail campaign and continues to grow testimony to stronger each year. “More people than the Geneva we could imagine offered to help, and we actually had to turn people away because National we maxed out on golf at 86 and dinner at community. 130.” Zagorski said he is grateful to Geneva More people National owners Pamela and Garth Chambers. than we “As a result of their wonderful support, could imagine the entire staff was in on it,” he said. In addition to Brotchie, special guests offered to included his wife, first female fourhelp” star general Ann Dunwoody, Special Operations Warrior Foundation’s Director of Operations Will Markham, and four former marines who joined in as golfers. Jodi Butler-Karow, a member’s daughter, was the guest singer at the event. Plans are in the works for next year, say the Zagorskis, but supporters don’t have to wait until then. The Cove of Lake Geneva hires new general manager Paloma Resort Properties has hired Dick M. Schwalbenberg as the new general manager of The Cove of Lake Geneva, a 222-suite condo-hotel just off the shores of Geneva Lake. Schwalbenberg heralds from Maine where he served for 13 years as chief operating officer of the Attitash Mountain Service Co., a leading real estate development and resort management company in the Mt. Prior to Attitash, Schwalbenberg was general manager in Maine at Black Point Inn in Prouts Neck and Sugarloaf Ski Resort in Carrabassett Valley. “Dick understands the relationship between the resort and the homeowners and brings to the Cove the knowledge of how to manage both entities simultaneously for the betterment of the property,” said Garth L. Chambers, president of Paloma Resort Properties, which has managed operations at The Cove since 2013. “While at Sugarloaf, Dick was retained jointly by the resort and the condo association, successfully moving this over-leveraged property to solid financial footing while repositioning the hotel, increasing service levels and acting as project manager for the hotel’s renovation.” A certified hotel administrator, former president of the New England Inns and Resorts Association and executive

Hope Walk set for Sept. 24 The ninth annual Lake Geneva Hope Walk to help uninsured or underinsured people being treated for breast cancer will take place from Sept. 24 along the shore of Geneva Lake. The Hope Walk was born from the experience of a Lake Geneva book club member who was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2008. Her diagnosis was made early, and she had the insurance necessary to cover her treatments. The other book club members, who were either breast cancer survivors themselves or had friends and family touched by cancer, put down their books and took up a worthy cause. The goal was to raise funds to help the uninsured or underinsured as they battle breast cancer. This action became what is known today as The Lake Geneva Hope Walk. The Lake Geneva Hope Walk is non-competitive and is organized and run solely by volunteers, so 100 percent of registration fees is donated to help fight cancer. The 2015 walk donated $17,000, which was presented to the Aurora Health Care Breast Treatment Assistance Program. To date, the Hope Walk has donated more than $98,000. The walk is always on the last Saturday in September. All information can be found at www.lakegenevahopewalk.com.

Fall maintenance is the key to a great yard
Area dealers offer the tips and tools to get it done By Sandra Landen Machaj CORRESPONDENT
fter working on your lawn all summer to make it healthy and attractive, do you wonder what you need to do now that fall is arriving to make certain that it will look as good next spring as it does now? As fall begins to make its appearance there are steps that need to be taken to ensure that your lawn – and for that matter your trees and shrubs – winter well. I began my quest to learn how to protect lawns, shrubbery and trees from winter’s harsh effects by speaking
with Larry Schlender from Mid State Equipment with stores located in Salem and Janesville, and Bill Wagie of Triebold Outdoor Power in Whitewater. Both are knowledgeable about the need to prepare the ground for winter and offered tips on how to make the job a little less labor intensive by using the right tools. As the dog days of summer begin to wind down, the needs of the grass that have been cultivated all summer begin to change and so, too, must cutting practices. The lawn, in preparing for the long cold winter, begins to absorb more nutrients and moisture. Lawn cutting practices need to reflect the change in the SPIRIT of GENEVA LAKES
temperature and the needs of the grass. Schlender, recommends cutting the grass to a height of 3 to 3-1/2 inches through the fall and then lowering the height by a quarter of an inch each cutting until it is down to about 2 ½ inches. “You don’t want it to be any shorter for the winter to avoid winter burn out.” According to Wagie, a common mistake made by homeowners is cutting too much off the lawn in one cutting. “Never take off more than a third of the grass growth in one cutting.”
Keep mower in shape

Improvement difference between a nice smooth cut and a ragged one. Keeping the mower in good shape, including having blades sharpened as needed, will result in a much smoother cut. Once the season is over, having maintenance performed means it will be ready when once again the grass begins to grow in spring. If it is time for a new mower, visit a reputable dealer who is knowledgeable about the various types of mowers. He or she will assist your needs and help you pick the machine to best serve your needs by asking questions. Are you looking for a better cut? Do you want a machine that merely mows the lawn or do you need a four-season lawn tractor that can be used to remove leaves, mulch, aerate and plow snow in winter? Mid State carries a full line of John Deere riding mowers and zero-turn radius mowers. The zero-turn mowers are recommended for speed in completing the job but not recommended if the property is hilly as they tend to slide off the hills. Triebold carries a full line of Kubota and Cub Cadet mowers. Check out several models and brands of mowers to determine which fits your mowing needs and your budget. As with everything else we purchase, buying quality the first time means a longer life.
Leaf me alone
Collecting leaves is the biggest task of fall. The falling leaves require constant removal and many hours of physical labor. It is important to remove the leaves before the cold and wet weather sets in. If left on the grass, the leaves, as they become wet “will form a mat that will suffocate the grass and be a breeding ground for fungal diseases,” Wagie said. There are several ways to remove the falling leaves – some of them more labor intensive than others. We are all familiar with the rake. Getting out and raking the leaves off the grass is a great way to remove them especially if you have a small yard and not too many trees. Encourage the family to help and turn this mundane job into a fun afternoon. Unfortunately, leaf raking is a job that begins from when the first leaves fall to the ground and often continues through November, An electric or gas blower requires less effort than a rake. The blower allows you to move the leaves into one big mound where they can then be bagged. That is unless the children decide to play in the leaf pile. Perhaps an even easier choice is to use a lawnmower with a bag

When to feed your lawn
When is the best time to fertilize? Is it fall or spring? The best time to apply fertilize is definitely in the fall, according to experts. By applying fertilizer in the fall, the essential nutrients needed for the grass to grow deep roots are supplied. These roots will hold the nutrients and provide a jump-start for the grass in the spring. according to Wagie, who recommends a walk-behind drop spreader for maximum coverage and an even layer of fertilizer. He advises fertilizing mid to late fall for best results. Schlender recommends Scott’s fertilizer to be applied about two weeks before the first heavy frost, which usually occurs around the weekend before Thanksgiving. “Scott’s has a good fertilizer program that is easy for consumers to understand

To fully prepare your lawn for winter and next summer, aeration should be done each year in the fall. Aeration is a method of opening up the ground to allow the fertilizer to penetrate. Spike aerating helps remove the buildup of thatch. By renting and using an aerator, the soil will be the loosened and will allow the fertilizer to penetrate down to the roots. Schlender also mentioned the shoe aerator, which looks like a golf shoe with extra long spikes. Worn as one would wear any shoe, the lawn can be aerated while walking through it. It does take some discipline to be sure that the lawn is covered completely. Seems to be much more time consuming than the spike aerator that covers a larger area than just the size of your foot. Core aeration is different from spike aeration in that the core aeration removes cork-like pieces of soil throughout the lawn. It should be done in the spring after dethatching the lawn. Dethatching is easier to do in the spring according to Schlender.

While autumn is not the best season to prune shrubs and trees, it is a great time to take inventory of tools. These include a long handled lopper, a chain saw, and a trimmer. The best choice, if these are items will be used infrequently, is renting. When planning to rent power tools always reserve about a week ahead of time as these tools become high demand at certain times of the year. The right tools allow you to get the job done properly. Improvement prevent further damage and possible loss of your bushes. Problems caught early are always easier to resolve. Depending on the size of the trees, this may or may not be a do-it-yourself project. For the large trees, a professional tree trimmer who has the equipment including
tall ladders and ropes to climb the tree will be a much safer method of trimming the tree. For smaller trees, a chain saw and a lopper will allow you to trim dead branches now rather than having them fall in winter. Examine the tree and leaves for any signs
of disease that need to be treated. By taking the time now to prepare your outdoor space for winter, you will be rewarded by a healthier, more vibrant lawn in spring. Picking the right tools makes the job easier.

Fall is a great time for DIY projects Are you afraid your chances to complete a DIY project this year are over because colder temperatures are coming? If you are, the good news is there’s no need to worry. You still have plenty of time to tackle that outdoor DIY project and, if you act fast, even enjoy it for a while before colder temperatures finally set in. Time won’t stand still for you, however, so get started today on any of these five DIY projects and you’ll be able to enjoy your home’s updated outdoor appearance long before cooler temperatures push you inside for good. Here are five projects you can get started on today:
Close the cracks
This is a wonderful time to seal cracks in your driveway before temperature fluctuations can make the damage any worse. Start by cleaning the area and then applying the proper sealer. The sealer you choose depends
on the size of the cracks. You can use concrete patches or paints, caulk, grout or vinyl patches to seal smaller cracks while larger cracks commonly require a combination of cement and grout. Apply the sealing solution to the crack and then let it dry before smoothing it over.
Do that deck
Adding a deck to your home has been on your DIY wish list for a while and now’s the time. ProWood Professional Grade treated lumber is perfect for any DIY project because it’s easy to work with, durable and is the most affordable option for decking. You can even use it to create railings, stairs and more. Your dream deck is waiting for you and you can learn how to tackle this project at ProwoodLumber.com.

are a great way to introduce new flowers and create spots of color. You can also surround your bushes with new wood shavings or small rocks. And for a simple project that has a big impact, grab the edger and tidy up those boundaries, you’ll be amazed at the results.
Fortify the fence
Fencing your yard provides security and allows children or pets to play outside without you having to constantly watch them. However, if you find metal fences look too industrial, you’ll want to pursue wood fence options. For an even more attractive fence, use ProWood Dura Color. It’s color-treated fencing that retains a natural cedar-tone or redwood-tone color for years. You can learn more at ProWoodDuraColor. com.

The craft beers also get marquee billing. Many of the popular brands are also displayed above the bar on their own shelf and refrigerators house many others that can be observed from the dining room. The pale blue-colored walls mirror the color of the water of the lake, producing a calming effect as one steps away from the hustle and bustle of downtown Lake Geneva. This small restaurant and bar provides a unique experience. Tom Trilla, owner of Barrique Wine and Brew Bar shared his vision of the bar and restaurant.

However, finding one that is unique and has an unobstructed view of the lake is a bit more of a challenge. Located on Wrigley Drive in downtown Lake Geneva, Barrique Wine and Brew Bar is that special place to enjoy the best of wines and craft beers teamed with exceptional food. It is a place to sit and enjoy the view of Geneva Lake while having lunch, dinner, or just a glass of wine and an afternoon snack. “We are focusing on fine wines produced by small family vineyards who use organic or other natural means to produce their grapes and wines,” he said. The bar, which serves only wines and beer, uses the same strict standards to choose the craft beers that they carry. Dana Trilla, daughter of Tom, who is the resident craft beer expert, said they try to concentrate on locally produced artisan beers. “Forty-five to 50 percent of the brands that are carried are from Wisconsin, with approximately another 25 percent from the Midwest region,” she said. “The others are a combination of brands that customers like and expect.” The food served is also from local sources and everything is prepared from scratch in house. The foods chosen are meant to compliment the beer and wine choices. Or if the food item is chosen first, a beer or wine choice must be made to compliment the food.

Approximately three years ago, Tom Trilla opened Barrique Wine and Brew Bar. It was a career change, but not a big step away from the business he knew and loved – that of wine. Tom began his career more than 30 years ago when he worked in retail management for a family-owned chain of liquor stores. As his wine expertise increased, Tom moved on to the distributorship end of the business where, based on his wine knowledge, he was very successful. He then moved on to the supply side of the wine industry as he accepted a regional sales position with California wineries and import companies. Today all his wine knowledge is concentrated on providing the

best wines for his customers at Barrique Wine and Brew Bar where he works on “blending people and wine.” So, where did the restaurant’s name originate? “Barrique,” answered Tom, “is French for the wine barrels in which the wine is aged.” Wine barrels are very important to the flavor of the wine as different wood casks give the wine different flavors. A restaurant and bar named Barrique is obliged to have a wine barrel on display, and located in the corner of the dining room one is displayed with a glass top and two comfortable chairs much like a bistro table.
Food to match
Just as they are very particular about the wines and beers that are served, the owners make sure the food is also chosen carefully. “We purchase locally grown organic produce. Cheeses are provided by local cheese artisans who produce fine quality cheeses in small batches,” Tom said. Every item served in the restaurant is freshly prepared inhouse. Even most of the salad dressings are home–made. All sauces, such as those used on the flatbreads, are also made inhouse from fresh ingredients. The menu contains a variety of food offerings to suit any appetite. The small plates work well with a glass of wine or beer. For a light lunch making a choice between beer cheese soup and shrimp bisque soup may be difficult. Pair it with one of the seven delicious and healthy salads, or perhaps just choose a salad, or soup.
For the larger appetite, the salmon or crab cake burger may be your choice. Or try one of the delicious flatbreads. It is well known that most Wisconsin restaurants have a Friday fish fry. Well, this one does not. Throughout the week they do offer fresh bluepoint oysters on the half shell, shrimp cocktails, and crab cakes along with the salmon burger for fish and seafood lovers. One of the most unique items is the Charcuterie board. Served on a wooden cutting board, it includes a choice of cured meats and artisan cheeses, which are accompanied by olives, seasonal jam, seasoned cashews and a warm baguette. This choice will make diners feel as if they have truly been transported to Europe where such foods are often served. The artisan cheeses have interesting names, such as one that is named “Ewe Calf to be Kidding.” Diners may choose the cheeses by their unique names or actually read the description and choose by type of cheese. Desserts are limited, but do include a chocolate cake, described as fluffy with a whipped cream filling and chocolate topping, a cheesecake topped with fresh strawberry glaze, and a favorite of visitors from the Chicago area, Fasano pies.
Wines of the world
The wines come from all over the world, bringing the most popular varieties and some of the ones more infrequently tasted. With so many new choices rather than picking a single glass of wine, diners may opt for a flight – smaller portions of three wines for $9 or four wines for $11.

If one enjoys dry white wines, Tom suggests Gruner Veitliner from Austria. Favorite wine cocktails including Bellinis and Mimosas, or a glass of Sangria – a summertime favorite from Spain – are served. Two drinks from Argentina are summer staples at Barrique. Tincha cocktail is a dry white wine served over ice and Tannat is an Argentinean wine that is produced using a French grape. Craft breweries continue to be a fast-growing segment of beer production. “Although many of the craft breweries are being bought out by the larger breweries, there are always new ones starting up,” Dana said. The Geneva Lakes Brewery, located in Lake Geneva, is one craft brewery that produces locally popular beers. The seasonal rotating draft beer is currently a cherry wheat. “The brewmasters at the smaller breweries really push the limits with their unique seasonal beers. Some of these smaller breweries really move the market if they develop an exceptional brew. Then other breweries, large and small, will try to copy it,” Dana said. Customers are invited to be adventurous whether trying wines or beer. The knowledgeable staff will help choose one that will be enjoyed. Customers are welcome to schedule parties, showers, christenings and anniversary events that use part or all of the restaurant. In addition to the indoor seating there is an outdoor deck where diners may sit under a

Frame has been at helm nearly half of mail boat’s century of operation
by Vicky Wedig STAFF WRITER
As the Lake Geneva mail boat celebrates its 100th year of pier deliveries in 2016, Capt. Neill Frame has been at the helm nearly half that time. “This is my 47th year driving the boat,” Frame told riders on board June 15 – the first day of the 101st season of mail boat deliveries. “Some day I’m going to get a real job.” Working for the cruise line has been Frame’s “real job” since 1974 – he started driving the mail boat part-time a few years before that. SPIRIT of GENEVA LAKES
The Woodstock, Ill., native grew up in the boating business. “I’ve been around boats all my life,” said Frame, 75, of Lake Geneva. “My folks were in the boat business down in northern Indiana when I was a little kid.” Frame’s family moved to Indiana from Illinois when Frame was young. When his father retired around 1959 or 1960, his folks moved to Lake Geneva, where the family had come to swim in the summers. “By that time, I was married,” said Frame, who still lived in Indiana but came to Lake Geneva some weekends to visit his parents.

This is my 47th year driving the boat. Some day I’m going to get a real job.”
Capt. Neill Frame
While in Lake Geneva, Frame spent some time down at the boat landing and got to know some of the people involved with the cruise line. In 1963, Frame moved to Milwaukee and began spending every weekend in Lake Geneva. At that time, the cruise line hired him as a speedboat driver. “Within the next season, I was driving excursion boats on a part-time basis,” he said. Frame learned to pilot all the boats in the fleet. The company has eight boats in its fleet, and vessels have come and gone in Frame’s 47 years with the Lake Geneva Cruise Line. In 1963, he said, the Lady of the Lake was brand new. The Belle of the Lake came into being in 1972, he said. Around 1969, Frame moved to Lake Geneva and went into the lawn mower business with his father and started driving the mail boat parttime so the regular captain could take a day off. In 1974, Frame started working for the company full-time and started driving the mail boat full-time in 1975. Summers were spent leading tours around the lake and winters were spent maintaining the fleet and shoring up the pier area against winter weather. When his wife, Pat Frame, retired 12 years ago after more than 30 years teaching in Lake Geneva schools, Frame decided to slow down too. “It was time,” he said. “It was time for me to not work fulltime. Maintenance work in the winter is pretty physical, so I kind of cut back, but I still drive the mail boat six mornings a week.” On Sunday, Frame takes the day off, and Ray Ames replaces him at the helm of the mail boat. The mail boat operates seven days a week, delivering newspapers on Sunday.
Lay of the lake Frame said he has no plans to retire from driving the mail boat and said the challenge of maneuvering the

it isn’t deep enough,” he said. Because Geneva Lake was formed by a glacier, 90 percent of the lake is at least 10 feet deep. The boat needs at least 5 feet of water to maneuver in, and, on Geneva Lake, the boat can come to the end of a 50-foot pier and still have 8 feet of water to operate in, Frame said. To celebrate the mail boat’s 100th year, the cruise line had a reunion of mail jumpers and captains this year. About 80 people attended, Frame said, many of them family members who carried on the tradition of jumping from the boat on to

vessel along piers has kept his interest for nearly five decades. “You’re maneuvering in and out of the docks, working in some pretty tight places with the boat,” he said. “I enjoy doing that.” Getting a boat as large as the mail boat close enough to piers for someone to jump from the boat on to the pier and deliver mail isn’t possible on most lakes, Frame said. “Many lakes you couldn’t do it because

piers to deliver mail. “It’s kind of a family-oriented company,” said Frame, whose son was captain of the boat that goes to Black Point Estate for a time. Ellen Burling, office and group sales manager for the company, started out as a mail boat jumper and both her son and daughter were mail-boat jumpers. Burlington native and Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo gave mail boat jumping a shot earlier this month. “He’d never even seen it done,” Frame said. After watching video clips of the mail-boat jumpers shown on board, “He said, ‘Oh, I could probably do that,’” Frame said. “One jump, and he did it like he’s always done it. It’s fun.”
Destination
The mail boat has had people from all over the world on board. After Bill Geist, of CBS News Sunday Morning, did a segment on the Lake Geneva mail boat about 15 years ago, the cruise line became a destination for people, Frame said. On the first day of the 101st season June 15, people from Sweden were on board.
“Boy you got up before the rooster to get here this morning,” Frame said to them. Delivery of mail by boat began on Geneva Lake in 1916 as a convenience to summer residents, Frame told riders. “In those days, you picked up your mail at the post office,” he said. “It started out as a necessity.” Travel by boat was more convenient in those days. “The roads were very primitive, and the transportation was horse and carriage,” Frame said. At that time, one of the local dairies owned a little steamer and delivered dairy products by boat, he said. The post office followed suit. Today, 60 to 70 lake residents continue to have their mail delivered to their piers. In many cases it’s for the sake of tradition, but often still for convenience, Frame said. “In many instances, it’s a heck of a lot more convenient to go down to the pier and get it than drive to the end of the road,” he said. “The customers that we have have done it year after year.”

The biggest in the state WALWORTH COUNTY FAIR RUNS THROUGH SEPT. 5
Wisconsin’s largest county fair – the Walworth County Fair – is celebrating its 167th year with the 2016 run Aug. 31 through Sept. 5. The fair opens at 7 a.m. daily and runs to midnight, except Labor Day, when it closes at 8 p.m. The fairgrounds are at 411 E. Court St. in Elkhorn. Every year, the fair attracts more than 140,000 residents and visitors for the food, fun and entertainment. The family friendly festival has no alcohol on the fairgrounds. The fair offers plenty to see and do, with free activities and entertain throughout its run. Free activities include the Walworth County Truck and Tractor Pulls (not Badger State), Park Stage entertainment, touring the barns and buildings, Marvelous Mutts, harness racing, Discovery Barn, Farmers Market and Old World Artisan Village, draft horse hitch class, horse pulls, classic car and tractor parade, Kid Pedal Tractor Pulls, and, of course, the animal judging. Also free of charge are the eating contests, educational classes at the Learning Coop, Butterfly Barn, Barnyard Stage Entertainment and the Nick Kids Show. Also returning to the fair for 2016 is the Fairest of the Fair, Outstanding Senior, Grandparents of the Year, the Idol Vocal, All American Trashion Fashion Show, Centennial Farms, Mercy’s Healthy Babies and the Farmers Olympics competitions. The Olympics are an expansion of the bale-throwing contest that is traditionally held the Monday of the fair. Along with tossing a straw or hay bale, participants also competed in a bucket brigade, a round-bale rolling contest and a bouncy horse race. The 2017 Fairest of the Fair will be crowned on Sept. 4. It is the 50th anniversary of the contest.
On the midway There is a cost to ride carnival rides in the midway, which is presented by North American Midway Entertainment. Ride tickets are $1.25 each and rides take two to four tickets. Tickets can be purchased in sheets to save money at 22 tickets for $25 or 55 tickets for $60. Wristbands for $27

New this year Every year, the fair introduces new activities, contests, souvenirs and food. The new horse barn will be up and running this year on the north end of the fairground and the picnic pavilion in the campgrounds is also new. The fair has announced two new competitions for 2016 – the Monster Arm Wrestling Tournament and the “You Bacon Me Crazy Recipe Challenge.” The arm wrestling tournament invites men, women and children of all ages to test their strength. There will be right- and left-arm wrestling and contestants will be divided into weight classes to compete. Weigh-ins for the tournament begin at 11 a.m. on Sept. 3 with wrestling at noon. There SPIRIT of GENEVA LAKES
is a $10 entry fee. The “You Bacon Me Crazy Recipe Challenge” will be at 11:30 a.m. on Sept. 3 in the Farmers Market and Old World Artisan Village. The culinary contest will have three categories: • Smokin’ Starters – appetizers; • Bring Home the Bacon – main/side dish; and • Hog Heaven Delights – desserts. Chefs may be of any age and the food must be prepared offsite. Visit the fair’s webpage for more information. New foods to look for this year at the fair include: Gator on a Stick, Gator Bites, Blooming Onions, Walking Tacos, ovenroasted red potatoes, muffins, vegetarian chorizo, vegan tamales, vegan tacos, chicken and waffle sandwich, grilled cheese and OctoberFeast Brats.
For the kids Walworth County Fair’s Kiddieland is the place to be if you have little ones. Kids can enjoy pony rides, Butterfly

Barn, kiddie carnival, contests and the Barnyard Adventure Tent. Performers entertain nonstop with acts all week long including Nick’s Kid Show and the Marvelous Mutts. Kiddieland also gives kids a chance to participate in potato sack racing, hula dancing, a pigtail/ponytail/braid contest and pickleeating and freckles contests. Performing live American Idol winner and platinum recording star Scotty McCreery will perform Sept. 4 during the 167th annual Walworth County Fair in Elkhorn. “People have been calling wondering when we were going to announce our main stage entertainers this year and because of this contract, we couldn’t announce until today but it’s really exciting news to share,” fair office manager Peggy Frazier said April 25. McCreery came onto the national music scene in 2011 when he was 17 years old and established himself as one of country music’s hottest new stars. By 21 years old, the singer and songwriter has sold nearly 2.5 million albums, received platinum and gold album certifications, debuted three consecutive albums at No. 1 on Billboard chart. The grandstand line-up for 2016 includes: • Aug. 31 – bull riding and barrel racing, The National Federation
of Professional Bull Riders Shock and Awe Tour presented by Rice Rodeo. This year will feature championship bulls and nationally ranked bull riders; • Sept. 1 – truck and tractor pulls in the afternoon and in the evening Badger State Tractor Pullers; • Sept. 2 – monster trucks along with pro ATV races; • Sept. 3 – harness racing in the afternoon and a concert by Grammy-nominated Christian rock band Skillet on the grandstand stage at 7 p.m. The group is touring this summer behind its platinum-certified album, “Awake”; • Sept. 4 – antique tractor parade and a concert with Scotty McCreery and special guest Chasin’ Mason who will be filming a music video for an upcoming album release; • Sept. 5 – horse pulls in the morning and demo derby in the afternoon and evening. International Demo Derby will perform three demo derbies. For more information, visit the fair’s website or find it on Facebook.
