Area residents join Operation Christmas Child sending Christmas joy Information compiled by Tony Carton Editor

STATELINE — Nearly 160,000 children will soon experience the joy of Christmas, thanks to area Illinois communities. Residents of 13 area communities packed nearly 1200 empty shoeboxes with small items like toys, school supplies and hygiene items for Operation Christmas Child, a project of Samaritan’s Purse that sends gifts to children living in difficult situations around the world. For those who missed National Collection Week, you can still get involved. Through the Samaritan’s Purse website, you can virtually “pack” a shoebox, allowing anyone with a computer or mobile device to provide a tangible gift to a child a world away. At samaritanspurse.org/buildonline, visitors can select a child’s age and gender, shop through an online selection of culturally relevant gifts, and finish by uploading a photo and writing a note of encouragement to the child who will receive it. After the shoeboxes are packed and sent by the Operation Christmas Child team, participants can discover where in the world their gifts will be delivered. It is a convenient yet meaningful way to join in a project that brings hope to children in need. The virtual-packing tool also offers participants the option to challenge friends to participate or the opportunity to share the gift of giving through a shoebox gift card. Operation Christmas Child is a project of Samaritan’s Purse, an international Christian relief and evangelism organization headed by Franklin Graham. Since 1993, Operation Christmas Child has delivered gift-

filled shoeboxes to more than 124 million children in more than 150 countries and territories. In 2015, Operation Christmas Child hopes to deliver gifts to another 11 million children. Year-round effort transforms shoeboxes into special gifts for millions of children in need Reaching more than 11 million children with Christmas joy takes a massive, year-round effort. That’s why, whether it’s August or December, generous volunteers across the United States are partnering with the world’s largest Christmas project of its kind. Through the Samaritan’s Purse project, Operation Christmas Child, kids, families, churches and groups create gifts by filling shoeboxes with a “wow” item—like a doll or soccer ball—and other fun toys, school supplies and hygiene items. These gifts can make a significant difference in the lives of children in need worldwide. “At any given time, there are more than 8,500 volunteers across the United States making important progress in our effort to collect as many giftfilled shoeboxes as possible,” said Randy Riddle, Operation Christmas Child Director in the United States. “Each shoebox gift represents one more child who will learn he or she is loved and not forgotten.” How U.S. Residents Can Join the Effort Pack a shoebox gift — Fill shoeboxes with toys, school supplies, hygiene items and notes of encouragement or visit https://www.samaritanspurse. org/operation-christmas-child/ buildonline/ to virtually pack a shoebox through an online tool. We look forward to many people having fun in Lena, coming together as a community and letting off a little steam during the chilly days of winter,” said Ross Vehmeier, President of L.A.S.E.R. “When our small, get-itdone group of board members agreed to do this, I had a big smile on my face. Being a life-long Lena resident, I have fond memories of Bed Races on Main Street, Tricycle Races at the Iron Horse Tap and of course the crazy scavenger hunt that provided some serious competition with a lot of laughs. It is my anticipation that bringing back these events, along with the new ones we have in store will help bring Lena folks closer together and give us some much needed stress relief. Senate Week in Review Dec. 14-18 SPRINGFIELD — The Governor and legislative leaders – minus the House Speaker – continued negotiations during the week regarding the state’s ongoing budget impasse and while a compromise wasn’t reached, it was described as a good meeting. Meanwhile, a recent report shows Illinois’ unfunded pension liability continues to grow, now at $111 billion. The state received good news during the week regarding high school graduation rates and the overall health and well-being of its citizens. Madigan doesn’t attend latest budget meeting Democrat House Speaker Michael Madigan did not attend the latest budget meeting with legislative leaders and Gov. Bruce Rauner Dec. 17 in Chicago. In a meeting that was described as good, the other three legislative leaders and the Governor also touched on public pension reform, workers’ compensation reform, redistricting reform, term limits for lawmakers, and the school funding formula. Both the Senate and House of Representatives are scheduled to return to Springfield Jan. 13.

Illinois’ unfunded pension liability grows A recent report from the General Assembly’s Commission on Government Forecasting and Accountability shows Illinois’ unfunded pension liability has now reached $111 billion. The newest figure is up from about $105 billion in 2014 and about $98 billion in 2013. The Illinois Teachers’ Retirement System alone accounts for $62 billion of the overall unfunded liability. This report continues to highlight the need for pension reform that is fair to employees and taxpayers, and that helps Illinois regain its financial footing. Earlier this year, the Illinois Supreme Court struck down a pension reform law. To see more: http://cgfa. ilga.gov/Upload/1115%20 SPECIAL%20PENSION%20 BRIEFING.pdf

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays FREEPORT — The second to last column for the year is at hand, and with the holiday season upon us I’ve been reflecting over the past year in Springfield and the 89th District. Many happy memories come to mind, yet I am plagued by the worst that came out of Springfield; maybe, I should have said what didn’t pass out of Springfield. The State budget shenanigans and the general process in Springfield are not even close to good government. You’ve sent me to Springfield to be your voice, and I’ve seen how the proverbial sausage is made or not made for that matter. It is not acceptable to me or the citizens of Illinois. There are a few who relish in the quagmire of Springfield, but I will assure you there are well over 100 House members (118 of us total) that are bewildered by how the General Assembly has kept thousands of Illinois’ families, units of government, and non-profit organizations languishing and awaiting services or funding from the State. Good bills, good legislation never receives a fair up or down vote on the floor because of the political gamesmanship. This is not the amateurs, this is professional politicking the likes of which Illinois has seen for decades. It’s disheartening and disenfranchising that our next generation of leaders hasn’t been instilled with the same sense of public service, duty, and commitment that appears stronger in older generations. Not all is bad, however. I have finished out my Legislative Luncheon’s for the year and received great feedback from all that attended. These meetings are extremely beneficial as I hear from local leaders in education, agribusiness, public safety, small business, economic development and local elected officials. From the ground up, I believe the people who deal with laws and regulations know how they impact their organizations and businesses in a more intimate way. For example, a local School Superintendent Bill Faller of Pecatonica informed me this

Brian Stewart STATE REPRESENTATIVE

year of an interesting law. The Automatic Contract Renewal Act states that a person providing services to the federal government, the State of Illinois or another State, a unit of local government, or a school district does not have to give notice when a contract is about to expire. Using that law through the scope of real-world experience, Superintendent Faller is wrangling a service contract, signed under a different Superintendent and different School Board, to assist in controlling district spending. Much to the chagrin of Superintendents everywhere, this archaic law just feels like an unethical business practice, and to include local school districts seems silly. I’m sure there are valid reasons for the law, and some industry lobbyists would be happy to inform me, but instead I can rely on the input of people whom I trust in the 89th District to help determine what’s best for us in Northwest Illinois. Thank you, Superintendent Faller. I’d like to end with a diatribe alluded to above, it is part of a lecture to a broad range of ages on what I perceive are a lack of fulfilled duties. First, to the older generation – go find someone to mentor. Your experiences in life and knowledge guide you every day, but those without practice and familiarity are unprepared for life’s challenges. It is your duty to mentor, guide, and teach those in your community. To the younger generation, some of you are egotistical, instant-gratification cry babies; yes, life is hard and full of challenges. The School of Hard-Knocks, of which I am a graduate, can be an unpleasant one, but it can also be highly rewarding. You don’t know everything, and you’ll have

questions that even the experienced generation can’t answer. However, you have to be involved to begin asking those questions. You must abide by your civic duty and give back to your community. You must sacrifice for the betterment of our community. I know many of you don’t like hearing that. In today’s world of all about “Me, Me, Me,” I say, “Duty, Sacrifice, Tomorrow.” We have a duty to leave behind a better community. This will mean a shared sacrifice for us all, one that our leaders don’t call for anymore. My generation and those generations before me heard the calls for service and sacrifice; we need to echo those for our children and grandchildren not just once, but at least once a week. With Christmas this week, I’d like to remind everyone that reads this that the spirit of Christmas is not in how many gifts you receive, but in how many lives you touch with those gifts. It should not be about one day, but about a celebration of giving, sacrifice, and love for our neighbors. Yes, younger generation, even that old man that yells to you to get off his lawn (be respectful of others, you hooligans). To all whom worship, in whatever capacity or religion, be thankful for your freedom of faith. It is a luxury not everyone in the world enjoys. As I call for sacrifice for the betterment of our community and country, I am reminded of a quote from a Sermon given in Westminster Abbey by Frederick Lewis Donaldson, “The Seven Social Sins are: Wealth without work; Pleasure without conscience; Knowledge without character; Commerce without morality; Science without humanity; Worship without sacrifice; Politics without principle.” As always, you can reach me or Sally at 815/232-0774 or email us at repstewart@gmail. com. FROM LENA’S KITCHEN The not so skinny cook

LENA — Are you ready for the big weekend? Because Christmas falls on Friday, there are many opportunities for celebrating the holiday. For those of you who have multiple family Christmas celebrations to attend, this three day weekend is great. I am gearing up for a big group early this week, and then will slide down easy all the way to Christmas. I have two batches of candy to whip up and a few presents to buy, so I guess you can say I am ready to go. This week features some great Christmas dishes—next week we will do some serious appetizer research. I hope you enjoy these Christmas recipes. Let me know which ham glaze you picked! The first recipe is for some warm Christmas punch. This

drink is easy to make because all you do is dump. You can add some “kick” to it by placing some red wine in the mixture if that is your preference (my wine drinking friends say they would never ruin good wine by putting it with anything!). Enjoy this punch all day at your celebration because it stays warm in the crock pot.

Slow Cooker Christmas Punch

4 C. unsweetened pineapple juice 4 C. cranberry juice 1/3 C. Red Hots candy 2 cinnamon sticks, 3 inches long In a 3-4 quart slow cooker, cook all ingredients, covered, on low 3-4 hours or until heated through and candies are melted. Discard cinnamon sticks. Serve warm. Because cranberries are in season, they are great to use in all kinds of things. This appetizer has a little zip to it with the jalapeno peppers. Be careful when you are seeding and cutting them up to not touch your face—you will not like it. This appetizer makes for a pretty addition to an hors d’oeuvres table. Serve it on

Christine’s CranberryJalapeno Cream Cheese Dip

12 oz. fresh cranberries 4-5 green onions, chopped ¼ C. chopped fresh cilantro 1 jalapeno pepper, seeded and finely diced 1 C. sugar ½ t. cumin 2 T. fresh lemon juice 1/8 t. salt 1 pkg. (8 oz. each) cream cheese, softened Pulse the cranberries in a food processor or blender until coarsely chopped. Add the green onions, cilantro, sugar, cumin, lemon juice and salt and pulse until the ingredients are well combined and finely chopped. Transfer the mixture to a covered bowl and refrigerate for 4 hours or overnight so the flavors have time to develop and the cranberries lose a bit of their tartness. When ready to serve, spread the cream cheese in an even layer on a serving plate or in a 9-inch pie dish. Top with the

cranberry-jalapeno mixture, spreading evenly over the top of the cream cheese. Refrigerate up to an hour before serving. Serve with crackers or tortilla chips. This next salad recipe is also from St. Ann’s cookbook. It continues the cranberry Christmas theme. This salad can be made in a nice glass serving bowl, or put into a ring mold for a special presentation. You will like the mixture of the cranberry sauce, the pineapple, and the crunchiness of the apple. Enjoy this extra special Christmas salad.

Teri’s CranberryPineapple Salad

1 can (20 oz.) crushed pineapple, drained 2 small or l large pkg. raspberry flavored Jell-O 1 can (16 oz.) whole berry cranberry sauce 1 medium Granny Smith apple, chopped 2/3 C. chopped walnuts or pecans Drain the pineapple, reserving the liquid in a 1-quart liquid measuring cup. Remove 1 tablespoon pineapple and set aside for garnish. Add enough cold water to reserved liquid to measure 3 cups; pour into large saucepan. Bring this to a boil and remove from heat. Add gelatin and stir at least 2 minutes until gelatin is completely dissolved. Add cranberry sauce and stir until blended (mixture will not be smooth). Pour into large bowl. Refrigerate 1½ hours or until slightly thickened (it should be the consistency of unbeaten egg whites). Stir in remaining pineapple,

apples, and nuts and stir gently until well blended. Pour into a glass serving bowl or a ring mold. Refrigerate 4 hours or until firm. Remove from mold if needed. Top with reserved crushed pineapple just before serving. What goes with ham? Scalloped potatoes of course! This recipe is easy and delicious and will go great with the ham recipe that follows. You will be so surprised when your dinner guests like this rather unconventional scalloped potato recipe.

Quick and Easy au Gratin Potatoes

2 C. sour cream 1 can cream of chicken soup, undiluted ½ t. salt ¼ t. pepper 1 pkg. (30 oz.) frozen shredded has brown potatoes, thawed 2 C. In a large bowl, mix sour cream, soup, salt and pepper; stir in potatoes, cheese and onion. Transfer to a greased 9 x 13 baking dish. In a small bowl, mix the crushed cornflakes and melted butter; sprinkle over the potato mixture. Bake, uncovered, 50-60 minutes or until golden brown. A great side with ham is carrots, and this recipe is easy to make in the slow cooker. You can put it together the day before your dinner, turn it on,

USDA Farm Service Agency announces Jo Daviess County Committee Election results ELIZABETH — Jo Daviess County USDA Farm Service Agency (FSA) Executive Director (CED) Cory C Cassens, announced the conclusion of the 2015 FSA County Committee Election. On December 9, 2015, the ballots were counted from the Local Administrative Area (LAA) #1 which includes the following townships: Dunleith, Menominee, Vinegar Hill, Scales Mound, Rawlins, West Galena, East Galena, Guilford and Rice. The balloting results were as follows: Ann Heller – County Committee Member. Kerry Nick Tranel – 1st Alternate County Committee Member Kenneth Peart – 2nd Alternate County Committee Member Cassens stated, “Ann Heller of Galena, IL, has served as a Minority Advisor to the County Committee for the past 9 years and served as a County Committee Member from 2001 through 2006. A little levity to lighten your day Santa was at the cafe for breakfast and when the waitress came by he ordered his favorite dish, Eggs Benedict. When the waitress came back with his order it was served on a shiny hub cap! Santa said, “The Eggs Benedict look delicious but why the hub cap? What’s up with that?” To which the waitress replied, “There’s no plate like chrome for the Hollandaise.”

tory has shown that it is very rare for an Alternate to the County Committee to proceed through their farming career without eventually being asked by their voting peers to serve in the County Committee capacity.” Ann will join existing County Committee Members of John Curtiss of Stockton, IL and Dean Groezinger of Elizabeth, IL to comprise the 2016 Jo Daviess County Committee. Ann had most recently served as an appointed Minority Advisor to the County Committee for the period of 2007 through 2015. In addition, Ann had served as an elected County Committee member for the period of 2001 through 2006. On December 9th, Marlo Schultz of Galena, IL was honored for his 9 consecutive years of 3 elected terms to the FSA County Committee. Cassens speaks proudly in reflection of Marlo’s service. “Marlo has ensured that he was a sound listener to any program participants perspective and ensuring once all of the facts were gathered, an FSA County Committee member decision was well stated and

represented by program policy. It was also apparent that Marlo valued the experience he had gained from prior Committee members and wished to convey such knowledge to newly elected committee members.” Cassens declared. In 2016, nominations and elections will be held in LAA 2, which includes townships of Apple River, Warren, Thompson, Rush, Stockton, Nora and Wards Grove. Producers may nominate themselves or others as candidates. Organizations representing minority and women farmers and ranchers may also nominate candidates. To become a nominee, eligible individuals must sign form FSA-669A. The form and more information about county committee elections is available online at: www.fsa. usda.gov/elections. Elected county committee members serve a three-year term and are responsible for making decisions on FSA disaster, conservation, commodity and price support programs, as well as other important federal farm program issues. ½ C. orange juice 2 T. butter ¾ t. cinnamon ½ t. salt ¼ t. ground nutmeg 4 t. cornstarch ¼ C. cold water

There’s No Place Like Home for the Holidays

In a 3-quart slow cooker, combine, the carrots, brown sugar, orange juice, butter, cinnamon, salt, and nutmeg. Cook covered on low 4-5 hours or until carrots are tender In a small bowl, mix cornstarch and water until smooth, gradually stir into carrot mixture until sauce is thickened. Cook for 10 minutes more. Some people do beef, some do turkey, and some like ham. If you go the ham route, you can jazz your ham up with a glaze. This basic glazed ham recipe is one you will like to keep around. There are several glazes that you have to choose from. Some are sweeter and some are more savory. You pick the one that your family would like the best. Enjoy cooking ham this year—you can get really good ones at A.J.’s Lena Maid Meats.

CHURCH NOTES

Pastor’s Corner “All ‘I Want’ For Christmas…”

By Pastor Rick Bader St. John’s Lutheran Church, Lena

the glory You have given Me because You loved Me before the creation of the world.” (John 17:24) Jesus has everything He could ever want or need in the whole universe. He has all of God’s glory. He has all of creation in His hands. But His “want” is to have us with Him! Jesus has a perfect relationship with His Father and with the Holy Spirit, and yet He wants our companionship. He left the comfort and glory of heaven to come and get us! He wants us with Him and was willing to pay the price of suffering and death to accomplish that want, that desire. That Babe of Bethlehem became the Christ of Calvary for that very purpose. Better than getting all the presents in that marked and dog-eared catalogue is knowing that we are Jesus’ gift from the Father and that we are wanted. (John 17:6) When all the festivities, celebrations, meals, and gift-opening are done and the last visitor walks out the door—leaving you tired and frazzled with a mess of dishes to wash and a house to put back together—remember you are wanted. When you didn’t live up to everyone’s expectations—didn’t buy the right gifts, didn’t make their favorite dish, couldn’t possibly make all the rounds, and didn’t get the annual Christmas letter out on time—remember you are wanted. When loneliness overwhelms you because everyone has gone home, you’re back to the “same old, same old” routine—remember you are wanted. Reserve your “I want” for Jesus. Let’s not squeeze Him in between the busyness of this season. Let’s take advantage of the real and only lasting joy of the season—Jesus, our Savior. Whether the Christmas tree looks perfect or the cat has crawled up in the tree and broken off 3 artificial branches, whether the turkey came out of the oven like a picture on the front of a cooking magazine or just tastes better than it looks, whether all the family could join you for Christmas or they ended up at the in-laws for Christmas—Christmas is about the joy and love of Christ and the fact that He wants you!

PEARL CITY — You’re invited to celebrate Christmas at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Pearl City. Enjoy Candlelight Christmas Eve services at 5 and 9 p.m. A Christmas Day worship service will be held at 9 a.m. Then enjoy a service of carols and readings featuring the “Characters of Christmas” on Sunday, December 27 at 9 a.m. The service will be led by members of congregation and include readings and your favorite Christmas carol. The SPOTS and Fifth Quarter youth groups will have their Christmas parties and a movie day on Wednesday, December 30, upstairs in the Youth and Family Center. A huge thank you to all those who participated and helped with the Sunday School Christmas Pageant, “A Mouse’s Tale.” The Pageant was fantastic. With special appreciation to each child who took the time to practice, learn lines and songs and to have the desire to be part of great pageant. A special thank you to Deb Bremmer and Claire Brinkmeier for directing the Pageant. They held numerous practices, had try-outs, created the set, made costumes and showed their patience and persistence to have a great Pageant. Many individuals helped with the Pageant and the Brunch. Special thanks to the Chancel Choir for singing at the Christmas Family Festival. Thank you to Pastor Ekstrand for directing and Sandy Scott, pianist. Bible Studies will resume after the holidays on January 4.

LENA — What did you get in the mail today? Among the Christmas cards, there are flyers and sale ads from just about every retailer imaginable. The problem is that they create an “I want” mentality. Dear Friends and Family of Waverly Place, Merry Christmas to all of you! From all the staff and residents here, we wish you a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Many changes have happened in this past year at Waverly Place, and I wanted to recap and bring you up to speed with all that is happening. As you know, we have been under new management for the past year. It has been an exciting and very positive change. We have done so many improvements, we invite you to come and see them if you haven’t recently visited. Currently, we have remodeled our therapy room! We also have increased our staffing, added a full time wound care RN, beefed up our activities, started having outings (last month out to Stella’s Cafe, this month Walmart in Galena Christmas shopping), worked with local churches to provide entertainment (choir, Xmas activities), invented a Facebook page with daily postings, and went to 12 hour shifts for CNA’s. 12 hr. shifts allow us to give your family member consistent care throughout the day, with less change. Waverly Place of Stockton is on its way to being a 5 star facility. We recently had an inspection with no deficiencies cited. The staff is working very hard together as a unified team and this trickles down to getting excellent care for your loved one. As a special gift to our residents this year, we are having Prime Rib for Christmas. We invite you to join us, and there is a sign in sheet at reception, or you may call in to get on the list. We look forward to the new year ahead! Merry Christmas. Sincerely, Gina Miller, Administrator and entire staff of Waverly Place. 229886

Testimonial “The Nursing Staff are just great. When I came to Lena Living Center I could not walk and I was very sick and weak. Now I am going home to my new apartment. The Therapy came to my apartment to see what I needed before going home and they have taken excellent care of me. I really like all the staff, they are sweet and caring.” -Arlene Raisbeck Pictured are Julie, Asst Physical Therapist, Arlene Raisbeck, Ashley, Occupational Therapist.
