Galena Garlic Co. gears up for Midwest Garlic Festival By Tony Carton EDITOR
Laszlo Marton bought a small acreage near Woodbine in Jo Daviess County nearly 15 years ago and dreamt of cultivating a nursery. He began spending his weekends planting hundreds of pine seedlings and about three years into the project, as he began to see some results, he wondered if there might be something more productive to do with his ground. “I thought to start raising garlic mostly because of my upbringing,” said Marton. “We grew up with garlic, paprika and olive oil and I wondered if cultivating garlic would be a natural progression.”
And so, clove by clove, row upon row, planting first an acre, and then another and another until there were almost five acres of the spicy bulb basking in the sun and drinking in nutrient until the dream became reality. “I didn’t realize when I started my business that there are roughly 40 varieties of garlic,” said Marton. “Those are the gourmet garlic. We found about a half dozen that flourished here in Northwest Illinois. They are totally different from the garlic that you get in the store.” He founded Galena Garlic Company and quickly learned five acres was not enough. He needed growers and decided marketability would
Stockton Schools announce Notice of Public Hearing
The Stockton Community Unit School District #206 will hold a budget hearing for FY 17 on Monday, September 19, starting at 6:45 p.m. in the Stockton High School Library. The budget is on display at the District Office located at 540 N Rush Street, Stockton, Illinois 61085.
be his strongest selling point for recruiting helpers. “Gourmet garlic varieties routinely sell for about $5 a pound and an acre will produce around 15,000 pounds of garlic,” said Marton. Do the math: 15,000 pounds times $5 equals $75,000. He knew he was on to something and soon alternative farmers and entrepreneurial gardeners were beating a path to his door. “Sure, there’s money to be had, but keep in mind growing garlic is labor intensive,” said Maron. “We’re out there with hand tools working the rows. There are plenty of weeds, but that is an expected trade-off for not using chemicals and the benefits from eating it are incredible.” He said almost anyone can grow garlic.
“We’re always looking for growers,” Marton said. “There are steps you follow and practices like mulching are a personal choice. We won’t spray our garlic and the weeds will come. You want to minimize the weeds, but garlic will grow next to a weed and you would rather it grow naturally.” Galena Garlic Company operations and marketing director Amy Curione said folks are passionate about garlic. “Folks are really beginning to appreciate the benefits of garlic,” said Curione. “I’ve always felt that garlic is the best medicine. I’m glad it’s catching on.” She said folks are serious about farm-to-fork and want to have a oneon-one relationship with their grower. “People are always asking for in-
formation in our store and education is a big part of what we do,” Curione said. “We are serious about sharing information and our love of food. It’s fun and who doesn’t want to have fun.” Learn more about the benefits of eating garlic and the products available through the Galena Garlic Company. Mary Poppins, Evita and Rodgers & Hammerstein to Headline TLP’s 2017 Timber Lake Playhouse (TLP), the professional summer theatre of northwest Illinois, announced its 56th consecutive summer season for 2017. Artistic Director James Beaudry and Executive Director Dan Danielowski made the announcement prior to the company’s opening night of Titanic the Musical at the playhouse in rural Mount Carroll. The subscription series will begin on June 1, 2017 with Disney and Cameron Mackintosh’s Mary Poppins for twelve performances. Based on the books by P.L. Travers and the classic Walt Disney film, Mary Poppins delighted Broadway audiences for over 2,500 performances and has become a must see, family friendly musical in the last several years. Chuck Smith, of Chicago’s Goodman Theatre, will return for his sixteenth production at TLP with Eugene O’Neill’s romantic coming-ofage comedy, Ah, Wilderness!. The play is a valentine to the soul of the American family--a family of another time, with all the mishaps, smiles and poignant memories that go with it. The New York Post calls the play, “A breath of fresh air...A miracle of sense and sensibility.... Vividly alive.” Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice’s Evita will be staged at TLP for the first time by Artistic Director James Beaudry in late June and July. Eva Peron’s legendary rise to power in Argentina is the is the subject of this musical masterpiece. Driven by ambition and blessed with charisma, she was a starlet at twenty-two, the president’s mistress at twenty-four, First Lady at twenty-seven, and dead at thirty-three. The story has become a classic, compelling audiences for the last 35 years. The fourth production will be Frank Dunlop and Jim Dale’s nonstop comedy adaptation of Scapino!. Set in Naples in the 1970s, the play incorporates slapstick, acrobatics and burlesque, and although Scapino is not a musical, it is punctuated with songs that give the evening a zany and magical feel.
The Wall Street Journal described it as “...an Evening of sheer, unadulterated delight.” Time magazine called Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Carousel the best musical of the 20th century. Experience the show that has captivated audiences around the world with its powerful story of Julie, an innocent, young millworker, and Billy, the swaggering carousel barker she falls in love with. Beaudry will direct the show in the fifth slot of the season. Featuring songs like “If I Loved You,” “You’ll Never Walk Alone,” “June is Busting Out All Over,” and some of the greatest dances ever created for the stage, it’s easy to see why, of all the shows they created, Carousel was Rodgers & Hammerstein’s personal favorite. The summer season will conclude with Little Shop of Horrors in August. Howard Ashman and Alan Menken (Disney’s The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, and Aladdin) are the creative geniuses behind what has become one of the most popular musical comedies in the world. The cast will feature several former TLP favorite performers returning to star. Subscription tickets to see all six productions are available now at the price of $105, a savings of 30% of the full ticket price. That price will increase to $119 in September. Student subscriptions are available for only $68. Subscribers will be able to purchase additional tickets for shows starting in August. Individual ticket sales to non-subscribers will begin in 2017. Gift certificates are available. Subscriptions may be purchases in person at the playhouse, located at 8215 Black Oak Road, Mount Carroll, Illinois, 61053. Phone sales are available at (815) 244-2035, and online purchases will be available at www.timberlakeplayhouse.org. Youth productions, extended season shows and special events will be announced this fall. Casting and additional directors will be announced in 2017.

VIEWPOINT From the Desk of State Representative Brian W. Stewart Page 4 - August 3, 2016 - The Scoop Today
Have you tried to turn on your TV the past couple of weeks and tried to avoid anything political? Well good luck, because it seems this time of year even ESPN is reporting from the Republican and Democrat conventions. Tis the season I suppose, and if you’re one of those political junkies, you’re glued to Fox News or CNN. So of course the national political scene is in the spotlight right now, but let’s not forget about what is happening locally. Would you believe me if I told you that your vote for a city council or county board member will probably have more impact on your daily life than your vote for President of the United States? Now don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying that the top of the ticket is not important (far from it, in fact), but the President of the United States doesn’t have much of an impact on how much you are paying in property taxes. My point is this: don’t let what’s happening in Cleveland, or in Philadelphia, or Washington D.C. distract us from what is happening in Freeport, or Stockton, or even Springfield.
Speaking of towns across Illinois, the Governor spent this past week touring the state and talking about term limits. Here’s the thing about term limits – do you remember the old saying about how everybody wants to go to heaven but nobody wants to go right now? Well, term limits are a lot like that. Most politicians believe that term limits are a good thing, but no politician seems to be willing to vote for them. Funny how that works, isn’t it? The problem is that it’s not a complicated issue. Complicated issues are debated, hashed out, and usually a compromise is reached. But it seems that with such a cut and dried issue like term limits, we inevitably hit a brick wall. If I didn’t know any better, I might be inclined to think that someone who has been in Springfield for almost half a century just doesn’t want to leave. But then again, I’m relatively new to state government, so I’m not an expert. I’ll have to defer to the honorable Speaker of the Illinois House on that one, but I digress. Why is it that President George
Washington decided eight years was enough? Furthermore, why did all those Presidents who followed him up until President Roosevelt decide that eight years was an appropriate amount of time to hold office? It’s not a trick question, really. The answer is those men were statesmen. They put the honor of public service above that of their own personal ambition. The problem is, instead of the statesmen of yesteryear who wanted only to better their country, you can’t seem to find that today. I see a state with the same old names, the same special interest groups, the same tired old ideas, and the same problems as decades ago. Can someone remind me again what the definition of insanity is? I hate to sound like a pessimist, but I assure you there’s a light at the end of the tunnel! We have a Governor who is fighting the status quo, and the status quo is fighting back as hard as it can. This isn’t to say that I agree with the Governor 100% of the time, but given the choice between a
change-maker and a Chicago insider with almost half a century in Springfield, I tend to choose the former. Term limits are a necessary step to reforming Springfield, and there is not one singular argument against it that passes the smell test. Golden parachute legislative pensions have to go, and career politicians will just have to find another career. Yes, I sound harsh in saying this, but at what point does a legislator’s salary become more important than achieving the necessary political reforms that Illinois needs to undergo? When my time in Springfield is over, it won’t be the end of the world for me. One of my staff asked me just this morning why I’m an elected state representative. My response was this – how many small business owners are there in Springfield? There’s surely no shortage of lawyers (no offense intended to my friends who are lawyers), but how many small business owners are there? The reality is that there are not many at all. This being said, it underscores the importance of our elected
officials being held accountable to advocate for taxpayers. All of this goes back to my initial contention: some of the most obvious problems require some of the most difficult solutions. Some people simply just won’t like it, but what’s right is right. Special interest groups and career politicians are going to have to accept the reality that term limits are coming and taxpayers aren’t going to continually enable extravagant pensions for legislators. \ Perhaps President Theodore Roosevelt had the most affecting summation when he said “I do not believe that any man should ever attempt to make politics his only career. It is a dreadful misfortune for a man to grow to feel that his whole livelihood and whole happiness depends upon his staying in office. Such a feeling prevents him from being of real service to the people while in office.” As always, you can reach me or Sally at (815) 232-0774 or e-mail us at repstewart@gmail.com. vote on a constitutional amendment to get term limits on the ballot ….” Currently, Senate Republican Leader Christine Radogno is the lead sponsor of legislation that would place term limits on the ballot and let Illinois voters decide this important issue. Constitutional amendments (SJRCA 14 and SJRCA 16) introduced by Radogno were scuttled in a Senate subcommittee by Democrat legislative leaders in April.
goals of increasing profits to the state, responsibly broadening its player base, introducing new technology and innovation, and ensuring responsiveness to public needs and concerns. In 2010, the previous administration poorly negotiated a contract, which resulted in the private manager consistently underperforming while being allowed to circumvent FOIA laws and withhold information from the Lottery and the public. The previous administration did attempt to terminate the contract in a deal that would have cost taxpayers tens of millions of dollars had it been allowed to go through. The Rauner Administration fought the implementation of that prior termination agreement and renegotiated its terms to improve taxpayer protections and save $22 million in immediate savings and $28 million overall for taxpayers. The following goals are the guiding factors in picking a new private manager: Eliminate conflicts of interest. Eliminate profiteering off of taxpayers. Incentivize Lottery to innovate and grow online sales. Eliminate risk of financial shortfalls to Common School Fund.
Ensure greater transparency and openness. Prevent taxpayers from being hit by large termination fees. Create fair bidding process for all interested bidders. Expand and grow Lottery revenues and customer base. It is anticipated securing a new private manager will take five to six months. New laws target child abuse, pension spiking and rail crossing dangers Dozens of new laws were signed during the week, including a measure that would increase collaboration between state government and the United States Department of Defense (DoD) on child abuse and neglect cases filed against members of the military. Introduced at the urging of the DoD, House Bill 4425 will require the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS) to notify the DoD if a member of the Armed Forces is named as the alleged perpetrator in a child abuse or neglect report. If the accused is a member of the Illinois National Guard, DCFS is also required to notify the Office of the Adjutant General. Also during the week, a new law
seeks to address pension “spiking” within the Illinois Municipal Retirement Fund system—or at the very least provide a more transparent process to promote public awareness of large end-of-career salary increases. House Bill 5684 requires disclosure at a public meeting of a local government body of any proposed salary increase exceeding six percent to a retiring employee’s reportable monthly income. The new reporting requirement does not include those employees subject to collective bargaining agreements. The new law targets situations where retiring employees are given a significant end-of-career salary “boost” as a way to increase their retirement income. Proponents of the measure hoped that requiring public disclosure of significant late career income bumps would make local government entities think twice before engaging in the costly practice of pension spiking. And, in an effort to deter motorists from crossing train tracks with an active warning device, Senate Bill 2806 will double the fine for not stopping at a railroad crossing. The first violation is increased to $500, up from the current $250; any subsequent violation would be an increase to $1,000 from $500. In 2015, Illinois had the third-highest number of rail crossing collisions (140, behind Texas and California), the second-highest number of rail crossing fatalities (24, behind California) and the third-highest number of rail crossing injuries (79, behind Texas and North Carolina). Illinois is also home to the second-largest rail system of any state with more than 7,300 miles of railroad track and 10,363 public highway-rail crossings.
Senate Week in Review A renewed call for a constitutional amendment to put term limits on the ballot; a request for a new private management partner for the Illinois Lottery; and the signing of more bills into law were all part of state government activity during the week. Governor promotes term limits Gov. Bruce Rauner traveled throughout the state during the week extolling the need for a constitutional amendment that would put term limits on the ballot in Illinois. Speaking before residents in Belleville, Rauner called on Illinois lawmakers to “Come back to the fall veto session. Let’s

There were no complaints when the 300+ runners and walkers in Saturdays color run at Apple Canyon Lake were doused with colorized corn starch.

National FFA Alumni Conference
On July 14-16, Rick and Penny Duchow attended the National FFA Alumni Development Conference held in Kansas City, Missouri. Around 150 FFA Alumni Members from across the country attended the conference which included tours of the Kansas Speedway and Children’s Mercy Park (Soccer Field) and Merck Animal Heath in Kansas City, Kansas. The conference kick-off was held in Downtown Kansas City, MO at The Little Theater next to Municipal Auditorium. During the week, attendees were able to participate in their choice of workshops. On Friday evening, each state was encouraged to serve foods made in that state. The conference concluded with a Banquet on Saturday evening with Dr. Leah Dorman from Phibro Animal Health Corporation as guest speaker.

Artist, author, singer and speaker, Sharon Pezan to share talents with SOS+ Thursday, Aug. 11, will be a full afternoon of music and inspirational delight for all seniors of Stockton and Surrounding Areas (SOS+) as local talented, Sharon Pezan, of the Apple River area will delight the seniors with her gifted talents through song and an Inspirational Message. Sharon and husband moved to the Apple River area a few years back, spending much of their time in a Chicago suburb prior to moving to Freeport, IL where for a few years, they operated a small resort before setting down roots in rural Apple River. Her talents are unlimited. She is a gifted speaker, (a lay leader of
Warren UM Church), a singer, a creative artist of landscaping, old barns, etc. and recently added author to her list of aptitudes. Sharon recently published a children’s book about a courageous Pit Bull puppy titled “How Chase was Laundered at the White House and Helped Bring about World Peace”. Sharon noted that the book is filled with life lessons for both children and adults.... if we are lucky, we may just get her to share a few inserts from her newly published book along with her personally autographing each book for anyone wishing a copy. Sharon was cordial to fill in on this
day as Caroline Singleton, pastor’s wife, was not able to do the August meeting as she is on a much needed family vacation. On September 8, Bob Heidenreich of Woodbine will be the guest speaker sharing his granddad’s ledgers dating back to 1911. Heidenreich was a most interesting man who wore many hats (farmer, Insurance man, Banker, Preacher just to name a few) and was very prominent in making Woodbine history. RR Heidenreich passed on this heritage via detail ledgers in which Bob had the good fortune of discovering years later. Mark your calendar as you
won’t want to miss either of these very interesting programs. All seniors of Stockton and surrounding areas (SOS+) are invited. The meeting will start at 2 p.m. in Stockton’s Calvary’s UM Fellowship Hall. Refreshments provided by our seniors will be enjoyed following the program. In its 11th year, SOS+ is an outreach ministry with its main focus to reach out to our area seniors, provide interesting programs and an afternoon of fellowship with one an-
other. SOS+ is made-up of area volunteers who work diligently to bring interesting, light hearted and educational programs to all. A free will offering is taken to offset program costs. All seniors are invited. For more information on SOS+, please feel free to call Mary Feltmeyer 815-297-5425, Nancy Rice 815-947-3683 or Shirley Toepfer 815-947-3639. If you are in need of a ride to the church, we would be more than happy to accommodate you.

vinegar and ¼ cup of rubbing alcohol . Mix thoroughly. Get two microfiber cloths—one to wash, one to dry. Microfiber cloths can be purchased at most supermarkets, auto supply stores and home centers. They are machine washable and reusable. First, dip one microfiber cloth in the cleaning solution and then wring it out. Next, wipe the wet cloth over the interior surface of the window to thoroughly wash it. For hard-toreach corners, use a coat hanger or straight-edge (such as a ruler) to help push the cloth into them. Finally, wipe the windshield dry with the other cloth.
Best way to clean the inside of car windshield EDITOR
Cleaning the inside of a car windshield is important to improve visibility. However, because of the angle of the windshield and the position of the dashboard, it can be a challenge to clean it thoroughly. Fortunately, the best way to clean windshield interiors is very inexpensive. Then, once you’ve cleaned the windshield, check out how to make your own car interior cleaning wipes to always keep on hand when hitting the road. In a bowl or pot combine two cups distilled water, ½ cup of white
