It will take place from 6 p.m. to midnight at Drury Lane in Oakbrook Terrace. zBesides an open bar, hors d’oeuvres and a fourcourse dinner, the evening will feature performances by all three Spirito! performed by Pokorny and area high school brass players, commissioned especially for this concert. Attendees will enjoy Verdi’s La Forza del Destino Overture and Vaughan Williams’ Concerto for Tuba and Orchestra with Pokorny as soloist. In honor of Veterans’ Day, the orchestra will perform the Armed Forces Salute. Veterans and active duty members of the military are invited to come in uniform. Tickets for all current, retired and former military personnel will be offered at halfprice, call 630-941-0202 to purchase tickets. Generous sponsors of the concert are Keith and Irmgard Olson (music scores) and Shirley Myers (guest soloist Eugene Pokorny). Gene Pokorny has been the tuba player in the Chicago Symphony since 1989. In addition to playing film scores in Hollywood, such as Jurassic Park and The Fugitive, he has played in chamber music ensembles, opera orchestras and orchestra festivals worldwide. He grew up in Downey, Calif., about a mile from where the Apollo command modules that first took man to the moon were built. He studied tuba in Southern California and in recent years has re-

turned to that area annually, teaching, playing and lecturing at the Pokorny Seminar given at the University of Redlands. He assisted Rolling Stones’ trombonist, Michael Davis, in the production of his “Twenty Minute Warm-Up,” along with having solo and educational CDs of his own. He has received an Outstanding Alumnus Award and an Honorary Doctorate from the University of Southern California and University of Redlands, respectively. Pokorny is a member of the Union Pacific (Railroad) Historical Society and spends time as a “foamer” (watching and chasing trains). He is a card-carrying member of The Three Stooges Fan Club (a “victim of soicumstances!”) and is an avid enthusiast of his good friend, David “Red” Lehr, “the greatest Dixieland sousaphonist in the known universe.” Immediately following the concert enjoy an all-you-can-eat pizza party in the Garden Room of the church, with pizza from DiLeo’s for $15 per person. Please call 630-941-0202 or visit elmhurstsymphony.org to reserve a spot. Under the baton of Music Director and Conductor Dr. Stephen Alltop, the Elmhurst Symphony Orchestra performs at Elmhurst Christian Re-

purchased at the concert, by visiting elmhurstsymphony.org or by calling 630-941-0202. Subscriber benefits include purchase of additional single tickets for $25, free exchange of tickets (conditions apply), and subscriber-only special gatherings. The 56th season of the Elmhurst Symphony Orchestra is made possible in part by grants from the City of Elmhurst, the Illinois Arts Council (a state agency), the Gaylord and Dorothy Donnelley Foundation, the MacArthur Foundation, and 90.9FM WDCB, Chicago’s Home for Jazz.

Montini Catholic’s Volley for the Cure supports Young Survival Coalition It was a sea of pink, pink and more pink on and off the volleyball court on Tuesday evening, September 27 at Montini Catholic High School’s Annual Volley for the Cure event. Montini’s girls volleyball team members and their mothers sold baked goods before and during the game against Resurrection High School in Chicago. It was the Broncos who took home the victory (2-0). Under the leadership of the team members, and with the assistance of dedicated parents and friends, the school surpassed their amount raised last year by netting over $1,400 for

breast cancer research. This year the proceeds will be going to Young Survival Coalition (YSC) which sponsors educational programs designed to reach young women affected by breast cancer as well as members of the medical community, friends, family members, caregivers, the breast health community, healthy young women and the general public. “It was an amazing night,” said Coach Steve Dowjotas, who thanked everyone who helped, donated, baked and set up for the charitable evening. Forest Preserve Dist. urges caution when driving during deer breeding season

Deer-vehicle collisions most likely in autumn

The Forest Preserve District of DuPage County urges drivers to slow down and stay alert to avoid deer-vehicle collisions this fall, when the animals’ breeding season increases the risk of accidents. “Deer are crossing roads and highways more frequently in search of mates between October and December, so deer and auto collisions increase dramatically,” said District ecologist Brian Kraskiewicz. According to State Farm Insurance, Illinois ranks 32nd in the nation for deer-vehicle accidents. A driver in the state has a 1-in-192 chance of having a collision, but there are ways to help lower the risk. • Reduce your speed and watch for deer on the edge of the road, especially at dawn and dusk. They’re common along woods, fields, fencerows and waterways, but you can encounter them almost anywhere. • If you see a deer cross safely in

front of your car, slow down and expect more to follow. • Make a note of where you’ve seen deer before. • Be careful when going around curves or when approaching favored deer crossings. • Don’t assume that a deer in the road will run off as you approach. • Don’t use your horn unless it looks like you are going to collide with a deer. Distant noise may confuse the deer. Close noise may produce an extra burst of speed from the animal, but there is no way to predict how a deer will respond. • Heed deer-warning signs. They are placed in areas where deer-auto collisions are likely to occur. • Do not swerve to avoid deer. Slow to a stop and wait. Flash your headlights to encourage the animals to move. If an accident does occur, drivers and passengers should not attempt to remove dead or injured deer from busy roads. Instead, they should contact local law enforcement for help. Illinois law requires drivers to report to police any deer-related accident that has more than $1,500 in damage.

Willowbrook football team qualifies for playoffs Addison Trail football team defeats Proviso East, keeps playoff hopes alive

By Mike Miazga CORRESPONDENT

The Willowbrook football team is headed back to the state playoffs. By virtue of the Warriors’ 31-7 West Suburban Conference Gold Division road win at Downers Grove South, the team earned its sixth victory and an automatic playoff berth. Willowbrook moved to 6-2 overall and 4-1 in WSC Gold play. The Warriors now have won four games in a row. The Warriors last qualified for the

playoffs in 2013. It’s the third playoff berth in coach Nick Hildreth’s fifth season at the helm. Willowbrook now turns its attention to Friday’s home game against Leyden. If Willowbrook defeats Leyden it will share the conference title with the Eagles, who come to Villa Park unbeaten in conference play at 5-0. Addison Trail football The Addison Trail football team kept its playoff hopes alive thanks to

a 48-12 win against Proviso East at home. The win moved the Blazers to 4-4 overall and finished West Suburban Conference Gold Division play with a 3-3 record. Addison Trail can become playoff eligible in Week 9 if it defeats Glenbard West Saturday in Glen Ellyn. Game time is 1 p.m. Addison Trail led 21-0 after the first quarter and 41-0 at halftime. Quarterback Bobby Daniels was 5-for-6 for 135 yards and threw

three touchdown passes. Running back Nick D’Ambrose ran 13 times for 171 yards (13.2 yards per carry) and scored three rushing touchdowns. Addison Trail ran for 205 yards on 21 carries. Darrion Conrad caught a 57-yard touchdown pass, while AJ Parnell caught a 40-yard touchdown and Stevan Jones caught a 27-yard TD. D’Ambrose had 208 all-purpose yards (171 rushing and 37 kick return).

Outlook: This game is simple. Both teams already are in the playoffs, but the more immediate prize is the West Suburban Conference Gold Division title. Leyden gets no worse than a share of it, while Willowbrook needs to win here to get half the title. Leyden’s conference victories have come by scores of 43-0 (Proviso East, home), 34-19 (Addison Trail, home), 14-0 (Downers Grove South, away), 26-20 (Hinsdale South, away) and 48-6 (Morton, home). Outlook: This is a must-win game for Addison Trail. The Blazers need to get to 5-4 overall in order to become playoff eligible. This exact same scenario occurred last year with Addison Trail being 4-4 and facing Glenbard West at home in Week 9. The Hilltoppers did not win the West Suburban Conference Silver Division title this year, dropping conference contests to Lyons Township (28-14) and Hinsdale Central (31-30) in back-to-back weeks. Hinsdale Central leads the WSC Silver at 5-0 heading into Week 9.

Andrew Felix led the defense with nine tackles. Nick DiBernardo had eight tackles, while Vittorio Venuti had six tackles. Jose Sanchez and Chris Lasanta each had two tackles for loss, while DiBernardo, Zach Ullrich and Venuti each had one tackle for loss. Having a blast Junior Betty Ann Garrett is a female kicker on the successful Willowbrook football team CORRESPONDENT

Betty Ann Garrett has a strong soccer background. The Willowbrook junior plays club soccer with a program based out of Hinsdale. But there was one sport she’s always wanted to try. “I always wanted to play football,” she said. “Coming into freshman year that was my chance to try it out.”

We all understand the game and have put our skills and strength together. We’re doing very well.” – Betty Ann Garrett, female kicker

Garrett ended up being the placekicker on the Willowbrook freshman B team. She was part of the Willowbrook sophomore team last year that went 8-1. Players from that team are now contributors to a 2016 Willowbrook team that has earned a state playoff berth with a 6-2 mark and has a chance to earn a share of the West Suburban Conference Gold Division title Friday at home against conference leader Leyden. Through seven weeks, Garrett had made six extra points in as many tries. She shares the varsity kicking duties with senior Mike Dembowski. Garrett said she’s kicked off a couple times as well. “Kicking gives you a really free feeling,” she said. “There are a lot of different ways you can interpret it. You can kick it a certain way and it goes a different way than anybody is expecting. I enjoy it.” Garrett said her demeanor helps her when lining up a kick. “I’m really mellow and don’t get nervous,” she said. “I process it through my head. ‘Here goes another extra point. I’m going to put it through the posts.’” Garrett said she’s prepared to make a tackle if necessary while on special teams. “It depends,” she said. “I will size the other team up. If someone is my size or smaller, I’ll tackle them, but if they are a little bigger, I’m not sure if I could do it, but in the end I know I can.” Garrett said she assisted on one tackle on a kickoff in a mid-season game. “As a freshman, I played up one game when the sophomore kicker was hurt and I assisted on another tackle against Downers Grove South,” she recalled. “You get a good rush of adrenaline, for sure.” Garrett said there’s no issue being a girl on the football team. “At our school, they enjoy it,” she said. “They feel like they have a mom on the team. Guys leave their water bottles around and I’ll fill them. Our team is cool about it. Sometimes it’s different with other teams. They will be like, ‘Oh my gosh, why are you here? This is a guy’s sport.’ I let that stuff go over my head and I ignore them. I’ve known a lot of the players on our team since middle school. They’ve been great.”

Garrett, who runs track in the because of the mix of players it has. spring, already knows what she “The guys I played with as sophowould like to do in the future. “I mores have come up with a lot of want to get into forensic psychology,” she said. “I really want to work with criminal profiling and criminal investigation.” In her spare time, Garrett enjoys photography and used her phototaking skills during an Easter Seals volunteer project. “Easter Seals is a lot of fun,” she said. “I spent time with one of the children and took photos of him that shows who he is as a person.” Garrett said Willowbrook is thriving on the football field this season

confidence and have played well,” she said. “They have mixed well with the senior guys who are very

strong. We all understand the game and have put our skills and strength together. We’re doing very well.”

A “rotated” tooth is one that has twisted on its longitudinal axis, so that it faces sideways. Rotated teeth (especially lateral incisors) not only detract from a bybutJeffrey T. lead Boland smile, they can also to chewing Orthodontic Specialist andLicensed oral health problems. Tooth rotation can occur as a natural result of crowding, which forces a tooth to rotate and present a narrower profile. Extraction of the wisdom teeth (third molars) is sometimes considered to relieve tooth crowding. Rotation can also occur due to extra space between teeth that allows a tooth the freedom to turn in response to abnormal bite forces. The orthodontist must consider these and other factors (including root development, gum and bone health, etc.) when developing a treatment plan.

By addressing orthodontic problems early, some can be reduced in severity or even eliminated. What’s happening at Villa Park Village Hall By Paul DelGuidice FOR THE VILLA PARK INDEPENDENT

The Villa Park Board of Trustees meeting held at Village Hall on Monday, Oct. 10, began with Village President Deborah Bullwinkel reading two proclamations. • The first proclamation recognized Principals Day as Oct. 21, 2016. Bullwinkel gave the official signed proclamation to Willowbrook H.S. principal Dan Wagner. • The second proclamation designated the week of Oct. 9 through 15 as Fire Prevention Week. This year’s theme for Fire Prevention Week was ‘Don’t wait, check the date!’ - a reminder for everyone that smoke detectors should be replaced every 10 years. • The Community Pride Commis-

sion presented landscaping awards to two residences in Villa Park. Awardees included John and Courtney Navarro as well as Michael and Alicia Bailey. Each couple received a plaque in recognition of their awards. • The Committee of the Whole portion of Monday’s meeting ended with a presentation of the Draft Water System Audit and the Leak Detection report. Stanley Consultants completed the audit and made the presentation, including recommendations on how to minimize losses of water and water revenue. • Denny Geiseman from the Villa Park VFW Post #2801 addressed the Board on Monday. According to Geiseman, the VFW has been struggling to keep its doors open due to a loss of patrons after the 2014 fire, which closed the post for several months. Geiseman said that the VFW makes about $3,000 per month on video gaming. Geiseman

said that approving video gaming at locations near the VFW could severely impact that revenue. Were that revenue taken away, the post could close within 20 months. During the Formal Agenda portion of Monday’s meeting, the Board of Trustees approved nine items: a) The Village Bill listing dated Oct. 10, 2016 in the amount of $425,814. b) Minutes from the Village Committee of the Whole meeting for September 26, 2016. c) Minutes from the Village Formal Board meeting for September 26, 2016. d) The first and final reading of an Ordinance amending the annual budget for the Village for fiscal year commencing May 1, 2015 and ending on April 30, 2016. The Ordinance was needed as part of the closing out and auditing procedures employed by the Village. According to Village Manager Richard Keehner, the preliminary results for fiscal year

Deadline passes for defunct Land of Lincoln’s customers to find new insurers BY ILLINOIS NEWS NETWORK

Individual customers of Chicago-based insurer Land of Lincoln Health must enroll in a new health insurance policy with a different company or they will face gaps in insurance coverage. A federally funded nonprofit created under the Affordable Care Act, also known as Obamacare, the three-year-old health insurer was shut down by the state in July after devastating financial losses. After the Illinois Department of Insurance seized control of the financially troubled Chicago-based insurer, 49,000 Illinois policyholders — 39,000 of which were individual policyholders — were in need of new coverage, the Chicago Tribune reported. Carmen Balber, executive director of the national advocacy group Consumer Watchdog, said Land of Lincoln was part of a co-op marketplace promoted by Obamacare. “Land of Lincoln was one of several dozen co-op insurance plans,” she said. “They were, in theory, supposed to offer consumers a notpublic, but the alternative that was not the for-profit health insurance industry…it was supposed to be a balance to perhaps the Wall Street and the profit-driven motives of a company like Anthem or Cigna. “Unfortunately, in the year to pass, the majority of these plans have failed.” A bleak future is predicted for similar insurers. “Land of Lincoln’s failure and the Department of Insurance’s decision to wind it down because it wasn’t fiscally solvent just reflects a trend that we’ve seen in the marketplace going forward,” Balber said, noting that the Illinois insurer was one of four similar co-op plans across the nation that have so far collapsed this year. A “special enrollment” period triggered under Obamacare, which allowed Land of Lincoln’s individual enrollees to buy new plans for the last three months of this year, ends at the end of the month. Balber warns customers to be mindful of the little time they have left. “Consumers should know that if they don’t buy insurance by the end of the day on September 30, they will be uncovered for the month of Oct.,” she said. “One of the other things consumers with these plans may not know is that, although under Obamacare your out-of-pocket costs and your deductibles for every year are capped, those caps don’t apply if you change insurance plans mid-year.” Customers can purchase new coverage online or contact an insurance broker.

of chemistry as they make gooey concoctions like slime and ice cream. The fee is $22. Older kids ages 6-11 will enjoy Halloween Potions, Elixirs and Other Magical Mixtures on Wednesday, Oct. 26 from 6-8 p.m. This interactive class will use basic chemistry principles to create potions, elixirs and other mixtures. The fee is $29.

system. The cost of the equipment, which will be used by the Fire Dept. is $208,554. Of this total, 90% or $189,564 will be covered by a FEMA grant. The remaining 10% (18,990) will be paid by the Village. i) A Resolution authorizing an engineering services agreement between the Village and V3 Companies of Illinois, LTD for the South Michigan Ave. improvement project (Madison to Jackson) in the amount of $156,959. The funds to pay for this will be taken from the Street Improvement Fund (bond referendum funds) and the Storm Water Fund (new $6/month fixed storm water fee.)

2016 appear favorable, with more revenues than expenditures. e) A Resolution approving the 2016 amendment to the amended and restated articles of agreement for the Northeast DuPage Special Recreation Association (NEDSRA). The organization has requested each of its Member Partner Boards (such as Villa Park) to approve these proposed amendments. f) A Resolution approving the purchase of on Chevrolet Tahoe with police package and two Ford police interceptor patrol vehicles through the Suburban Purchasing Cooperative in the amount of $86,631. g) A Resolution approving the purchase of 14 mobile data terminals (MDT) for Village police vehicles. These MDT’s will be bought through the Illinois Joint Purchasing Program for local governmental agencies in the amount of $55,804. h) A Resolution approving the purchase of 26 self-contained berating apparatus (SCBA) and an air compressor/fill station/cascade

• The Board voted unanimously to approve the first and final reading of an Ordinance increasing the number of class EE liquor licenses from 7 to 8. The owners of the new Picante Wings restaurant, 1023 W. North Ave. Unit 1, requested the license in order to serve alcoholic beverages to diners.

the conference behind Morton. Through the end of the regular season, Addison Trail had 14 players who scored at least one goal. And of those 14, a dozen had at least two goals and three players have at least 10 goals. Addison Trail scored 71 goals in the 20 regular-season games. “We have a lot of guys who can put the ball in the net,” said Addison Trail coach Ryan Dini. “Our offense is very balanced and several players can contribute on any given day. I like how quickly we can create dangerous opportunities out of only two or three passes. We are a fast team and use our speed to our advantage.” On the assists front, 18 players

had at least one assist through the end of the regular season and five had at least five assists. Goalies Jacob Grygo and Jean Avila combined to allow 16 goals in the 20 regular-season games. Dini noted each played one half almost every game this season. Addison Trail had nine shutouts as a team heading into the playoffs. “Both keepers are juniors so they will be back next year,” he said. “Their goals-against-average is 0.80 a game. That is outstanding.” Addison Trail’s excellence on defense extends beyond its goaltending. “I think the numbers speak for themselves,” said Dini. “We have only let up 16 goals on the season.

Our defense is full of senior leadership and does a great job of marking other team’s best players. They want to shut out every team we play and take pride when we do so.” Individually, the Blazers have benefitted of late from the play of Uriel Martinez and Ruben Amaro. “Uriel is a senior who has come back from injury the past three games,” said Dini late last week. “He is coming into form for us and gives us another dangerous player to add to the mix. I am really happy for him. Ruben is a senior who can play any midfield position. He does a good job of doing whatever we ask of him and he makes our team better because of it. I am proud of how

much he has grown up over the past year.” If Addison Trail won its regional semifinal game earlier this week, it will play for a Class 3A regional title Friday at 6 p.m., at home. “I’m impressed with our ability to find a way every game to win,” said Dini. “We have been able to beat teams in so many ways this year, whether it’s with our speed, our corner-play execution, direct kicks or just on combination play. Our guys find a way to score. Our senior leadership and how close our team is also impresses me. It’s been an outstanding season and I credit our players for believing in our system and playing for one another.”

Addison Trail boys cross-country team readying for state series Diaz, Lopez medal at Leyden invite for Blazers’ girls crosscountry team By Mike Miazga CORRESPONDENT

The Addison Trail boys crosscountry team has made late-season strides in preparation for the upcoming state series. The Blazers recently placed 20th at the St. Charles North invitational where senior Demetrio Cervantes clocked in at 17:41. “Demetrio is back and healthy,” said Addison Trail coach Brad Donaldson. “He had a strong race at St. Charles.” Donaldson noted Danny Bueno has been the team’s “most consistent and solid runner all year.” “He has been gradually improving each

week,” he added. Sophomore Ricardo Arreguin and junior Luis Vargas also have improved. “Ricardo has come on very strong the last half of the season,” said Donaldson. “Luis has had a very solid year as well. They are dropping more than a minute off their times.” Vargas was one of the team’s top two finishers in races at Leyden and St. Charles. “Luis had a very strong second cycle for us,” said Donaldson. “This is his first year in crosscountry and he has done a real nice job for us. Donaldson also has seen his younger runners take steps forward. “The younger runners still are learning how to ‘race,’” he said. “They are very comfortable running, but still are learning how to compete with other runners and adapt to the changing paces of a race.” The coach has been pleased with

his squad’s team-first attitude. “The group overall has been a great group of kids,” he said. “We have had a number of our top runners hurt so a lot of meets have not been as competitive as they could have been, but everyone has been willing to step up and do what they can to help the team out when asked.” Addison Trail will compete in a Class 3A regional Saturday. “We’re looking forward to the state series,” said Donaldson. “Our top runners should all be back and healthy, ready to race so we hope to make things interesting. We are in a tough regional again this year.” Addison Trail girls cross country Blazers’ girls cross-country coach Kirsten Olson said her team has benefitted from the contributions of some new faces this season.

Both these young women have really contributed to the positive atmosphere of this year’s team. Each demonstrates a daily dedication and work ethic that sets the bar for the rest of the team.” – Kirsten Olson, Blazers’ girls cross-country coach

“There are several newcomers to the program who have been key contributors this season,” she said. That group includes sophomore Natalie Diaz and Lizbeth Balbuena. Diaz was a medalist at the Leyden invitational. “They have held key roles on the varsity team this season,” said Olson. Other newcomers include junior Melissa Krefft and senior Marie Baumgartner. “They are running consistently at the varsity level,” said Olson. “Both these young women have really contributed to the positive atmosphere of this year’s team. Each demonstrates a daily dedication and work ethic that sets the bar for the rest of the team.” Returning sophomore Mercedes Lopez and senior Suhei Valbuena

also have been key contributors. Lopez was a medalist at the Leyden invitational as well. “Mercedes and Suhei have led the team as the top two runners throughout the season,” said Olson. “Mercedes and Suhei push each other to be better while also supporting one another. They both are highly competitive and always strive to run a personal record at each meet.” Olsen noted late last week that senior co-captain Maria Ramos, senior Julissa Rodriguez and juniors Diana Grinyuk and Karina Martinez were in contention for the final varsity spot. Addison Trail competes in the Lake Park regional Saturday. “We hope to qualify some individuals to the sectional meet,” said Olson.
