VILLA PARK — On Sunday, October 18, the Independent learned that Villa Park paramedics had responded to an ambulance call on the 200 block of West Division Street, where a family of 11 people had been suffering from apparent carbon monoxide poisoning on that morning. The call came in at 8:57 a.m., according to Lt. Chris Gilliland of the Villa Park Fire Department. The ambulance call was for a 15-year-old resident of the single family home who had a headache. Emergency responders found 10 other people in the home suffering from the same symptoms, which were consistent with carbon monoxide poisoning. Everyone in the home was transported to area hospitals for treatment, Gilliland said. Preliminary investigations indicate a gas appliance may have been the source of the leak, from either a water heater or a furnace. The condition of the 11 people was unknown as of press time.

Lombard building wins award from Metal Construction Assn. CHICAGO — Last week at METALCON, the metal construction industry’s annual conference held in Tampa, the Metal Construction Association (MCA) awarded its 2015 Chairman’s Award to Adjustable Forms, Inc. in Lombard for the renovation of its Corporate Headquarters. The company won in the commercial / industrial category, one of eight categories which includes education, colleges and universities; education, primary and secondary schools; institutional; metal roofing; municipal; and residential. Project recognition for Adjustable Forms, Inc., was given to: MCA Member Manufacturer: Umicore Building Products USA, Inc. Architect: DLR Group Contractor: Adjustable Forms, Inc. Metal Installer: Tuschall Engineering About the project Adjustable Forms, Inc., had outgrown its Lombard facility and sought to renovate and expand the office and warehouse. Metal provided function, efficiency and a unique look to the exterior, association officials said. A high performance rain screen system and solid panel system made of zinc were used to bring a sophisticated contrast to the stark light-colored concrete building. A perforated zinc sunscreen panel mitigates the harsh western sun in the late afternoon while providing a changing aesthetic as the sun moves across the sky. Ambulance fees in Village to increase New numbers more closely align with Medicare’s allowable reimbursement

VILLA PARK — The Villa Park Board of Trustees at their Monday, Oct. 12 meeting voted 5 to 1 to raise ambulance fees for emergency service to residents and non-residents. The increase was sought by Village staff to better reflect current averages among area municipalities. The fees had not been adjusted since March, 2011, according to Village officials. “Medicare has updated its fee schedule and the Village is not collecting the maximum Medicare allowable reimbursement,” said Village Manager Richard Keehner. The Basic Life Support (BLS) fee for residents will increase from $440 to $500. Non-resident BLS fees will go from $650 to $750. Advanced Life Support 1 (ALS1) fees will increase to $600 (from $500) for Villa Park residents and from $780 to $900 for non-residents. Advanced Life Support 2 (ALS2) will now be $850 for residents (from $740) and are $1,100 for non-residents (from $960). Additionally, mileage will go from $9 to $15 for residents and from $11 to $25 for non-residents. Supplies fees will be reduced to zero for both residents and nonresidents (was $48 and $72). Residents will still pay nothing for non-treatment/non-transport, but non-residents will be billed $100 (up from $25). Fees for emergency services were compared from neighbor-

The average resident fee for these municipalities was $661 for BLS and $876 for ALS1. Villa Park Fire Chief Ron Rokosnik explained that Basic Life Support services includes first aid such as bandaging, splinting, use of ice packs and behavioral evaluations. Advanced Life Support 1 services include, cardiac monitoring, intravenous fluids, cardiac defibrillation and administering medications. ALS2 adds intevation, which is inserting tubes for patients who are not breathing. Trustee Chris Aiello noted that the actual cost of ambulance services was closer to $2,000 per transport. “I received information from the Village finance manager that this was costing us about two grand per trip,” Aiello said during discussions. “Can I propose that we increase this another 50% across the board?” Aiello moved, but it failed for lack of a second. Trustees Nick Cuzzone, Al Bulthuis, Bob Wagner and Don Kase joined Village President Deborah Bullwinkel in voting for the fee increase. Trustee Aiello cast the sole ‘no’ vote. Trustee Taglia did not attend Monday’s meeting. Village staff noted that health insurance as well as Medicare covers ambulance fees, in most cases at 100%.

Church to offer seminar on housing options later in life VILLA PARK — A seminar, “Where Do We Go From Here? Housing Options in Later Life”, will be presented at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Villa Park on Saturday, November 7 at 1:30 p.m. This will be an informational seminar focusing on senior housing options in the Chicago metropolitan area. Speakers include Andrea Donovan, a senior housing consultant and certified care manager who founded Senior Living Advisors in 2006. Donovan has toured and analyzed over 400 senior communities in our area, including independent living, assisted living and nursing homes. WHEATON — On Thursday, Oct. 15, the community celebrated the grand opening of the DuPage County Health Department’s brand new Community Center in Wheaton. The theme for the event was “Celebrate Community” and, in addition to an official ribbon cutting, there were building tours and remarks from county leaders. The 33,000-square-foot Community Center is located on the DuPage County Government campus in Wheaton. The cost was approximately $11 million and it was fully funded by the Health Department.

Lanes for texters, smartphone users sorely needed

W

hile in downtown Chicago, I’ve noticed city streets that are designated exclusively for bicyclists. And some states have high-occupancy vehicle (or carpool) lanes for motorists with two or more passengers. Earmarking lanes for bicyclists and motorists appear to serve these specific niche groups well, and with that in mind, I’m of the belief that IDOT should undertake a feasibility study that would hopefully lead to the following: Designating one lane in each direction on multiple-lane urban roads, interstates and tollways in Chicago and the suburbs exclusively for texters and smartphone users. This way, smartphone users who would rather talk someone’s ear off than keep up with traffic could do so and texters could do their thing. Then, if these texters happen to rear-end each other while flailing away on their keyboards, well, so be it. As long as they won’t be

Sandro Sez... Mike Sandrolini Columnist rear-ending me! I came to this conclusion one morning while driving westbound on the Eisenhower, approaching Mannheim Road. I happened to be camped in the far right lane, stuck behind two motorists who were traveling at an unusually low rate of speed, so I eventually got into the middle lane in order to pass them. Sure enough, the lead driver was chugging along at a snail’s pace, smartphone pressed up against his left ear lobe, blabbing away, I’m sure, about something trivial.

There are, of course, laws on the books that ban all use of hand-held devices while driving—implemented in 2014—as well as a law that bans what I believe is a far more dangerous practice: texting while driving (which became law in 2010). Yet it appears these laws tend to be ignored. It is annoying when drivers are engaged in mobile conversation, but I really get the heebie-jeebies when I spot a textobsessed ‘Cyberbot’ looking down and poking at a keyboard. Over the past several months, I’ve had close encounters of the worst kind with texters behind the wheel. But one incident takes the cake. As I was pulling out of my apartment building parking lot on the way to work one morning, I made a left-hand turn and noticed a middle-age woman pulling out from her condo across the street. I slowed down considerably because she was noticeably fiddling with her

devices are illegal. The school district didn’t prosecute him, but it did suspend him for five days without pay. According to one news report, the superintendent wrote a letter to the suspended teacher. A portion of the letter stated: “Not only did your actions potentially violate federal law, you posed a serious risk to critical safety communications as well as the possibility of preventing others from making 9-1-1 calls.” Time out for a reality check -if students were on their phones so often during class that it prompted the teacher to use a signal jammer, you can’t tell me those students were using their phones for critical safety communications and/or emergency purposes. Perhaps a more pragmatic solution to curbing smartphone use during class was offered by a college instructor who called in to the talk show. She informs her students from the get-go that if anyone is found even referencing his or her cell phone during class, he or she is immediately dismissed from class and gets a zero for the day. My guess is that she’s already been taken to task for implementing this policy because apparently, using one’s smartphone trumps anything and everything these days.

phone and didn’t bother once to look up for oncoming traffic as she pulled out in front of me. Finally, she glanced over. I had come to a complete stop by then and gave her one of those “if looks could kill” stares. She nevertheless kept right on driving, phone in hand. As wonderful as smartphones are, when you witness the type of stupidity on the highways and byways—not to mention putting peoples’ lives at risk— it makes me hope this state someday approves doubling or tripling fines for that type of offender. The going rate for violating state cell phone and texting laws start at $75. How about jacking it up to $150 or $300 per offense? What is the obsession with smartphones that we either have to be glancing at them, and in many cases, texting every minute or two? This constant preoccupation -- fixation if you will - with smartphones brings to mind a recent segment from a radio talk show. The host was discussing the story of a high school science teacher in the Tampa Bay area who was sick and tired of students using their phones in class, so he decided to bring a signal jammer into his classroom and use it over the course of a few days. It turns out that jamming

n my early childhood years I lived on a farm with my mom, dad and two sisters. The three daughters were named Lily, Rose and Violet and were considered my dad’s flower garden. My dad died when I was five years old as a result of health problems, leaving my mother alone to run the farm and care for three young daughters ages 5 to 11. Being pretty much locked onto the farm, one day Mom decided she needed to teach herself how to drive Dad’s car, the “Old Clunker.” Although it took a long time, she finally managed to get it started, with all of us girls in the back seat giggling about the trouble she

was having, which probably didn’t make the process any easier. When she finally did get it started, Mom drove the car out into the fields to practice her skills. The car had no automatic transmission – no cars did in those days -- so learning to drive was much more difficult than it is today. A distance from the house, the engine died and Mom could not get it started again, prompting even more giggling from the back seat. My older sister had to run through the fields to get my uncle who lived on a nearby farm to come and help. He finally got us moving again and we made it back

Continued from page 8 to the farm (with more giggling!). Shortly thereafter, we had to leave the farm because Mom just couldn’t run it all by herself, so we moved to Itasca. By this time Mom was back driving the car and often made short driving trips to a nearby store. This required crossing some raised railroad tracks. On one occasion, she had to stop on that incline since the crossing gate was closed. The car started rolling backwards and Mom couldn’t stop it since the brakes were shot. Fortunately, the car finally came to a stop before we hit anything or any-

one. Still, it left Mom in a panic. This incident involved even more giggling from the back seat over Mom’s ineptitude with the car. With the kind of back seat “support” Mom was getting, it didn’t take long before she gave up driving the Old Clunker and made us walk to stores or wherever we had to go. The Old Clunker stayed in the garage as a reminder of all the laughs we girls had over Mom’s driving, much to her annoyance! As I look back on those days, I feel sorry for all the trouble we must have caused Mom by

having so much fun over her driving difficulties. As I look back on those times, I realize that most of Mom’s driving problems were probably the fault of the Old Clunker and not her. I now feel sorry for the giggling I did, but appreciate what a dear and wonderful mother we all had. Written in 1964, Up the Down Staircase spent 64 weeks on the New York Times Best Seller list and sold over 6 million copies. Willowbrook football team becomes playoff eligible Warrior and Blazer crosscountry teams compete at conference meet By Mike Miazga Correspondent

The Willowbrook football team now is one step closer to earning a spot in the state playoffs. The Warriors recently scored a 23-22 West Suburban Conference Gold Division win over Downers Grove South. The win moved Willowbrook to 5-3 overall and 4-1 in WSC Gold play. Willowbrook became playoff eligible with the victory. If the Warriors win at Leyden Friday night they will earn an automatic playoff berth. If Willowbrook loses, it would be 5-4 and would have to earn a spot based on its playoff points. Willowbrook went into Week 8 with only 23 playoff points (total number of wins its nine opponents have), the lowest of the seven teams in the WSC Gold. Willowbrook gained only two points from Week 8 with Addison Trail and Morton winning games. The other seven teams on Willowbrook’s schedule lost in Week 8. Willowbrook brings 25 playoff points into the final week. Willowbrook could gain a maximum of six more points in Week 9. Last year’s playoff cutoff was 39 points. Additionally, if Willowbrook defeats Leyden it will earn no less than a share of the WSC Gold title. Willowbrook and Hinsdale South are tied at 4-1. Hinsdale South hosts Morton in Week 9. Addison Trail football The Addison Trail football team scored a 43-6 West Suburban Conference Gold Division victory over Proviso East in Maywood. The win moved the Blazers to 4-4 overall. Addison Trail finished conference play with a 3-3 record. Addison Trail closes the regular season at home Friday at 7:30 p.m. against undefeated Glenbard West in an annual

WSC Gold boys cross country The Willowbrook boys crosscountry team placed fourth at the recent West Suburban Conference Gold Division meet in Downers Grove. Willowbrook had 110 points. Downers Grove South won the conference with 31 points. Marco Martinez led Willowbrook with a ninth-place finish in 15:52.60. Henry Dahl took 18th in 16:42.60. Casey King was 24th with a time of 17:04.90. Chris Turek was 28th with a time of 17:17.40 and Jack Garner was 31st with a time of 17:51.60. “Our seniors are ready for their last few races of the season,” said Willowbrook coach TJ Artman earlier last week. “Marco is leading the way followed by Chris Turek, Henry Dahl, Jack Garner and Andrew Verr. Casey King will be in the varsity mix as well, possibly along with Nathan Sprovieri and sophomore Mike Isaacson. We train all season for these last few races. It’s what the season boils down to, one race.” Artman is looking forward to the remainder of the season. “The season has been a blast,” he said earlier last week. “Only recently have we had to fight through some banged up athletes, but they have all recovered and are ready to go. The last few practices have been so focused and intense, it’s been great. The seniors’ leadership has been stellar and the younger teammates are realizing there is a major difference between running and racing.” Addison Trail was sixth in the conference with 158 points. Julio Cervantes led the Blazers with a 22nd-place time of 16:51.60. Nick Czorniah was 26th with a time of 17:12.90. Danny Bueno was 27th with a time of 17:16.60. Pegler starred at the Downers South-Hinsdale South meet, running a personal best time and finishing first among Willowbrook runners. Hasler also cited strong efforts from sophomores Klingelhoffer and Briana Jones. “Both have done an excellent job and continue to show improvements in their time,” said Hasler earlier last week. “As of late, Angela has been one of our top three runners and has been racing excellently.” Yao, also only a sophomore, is in her first cross-country sea-

son. “Evelyn has been a major contributor to the varsity squad and is consistently running in our top five,” said Hasler. Guthrie and senior Kimberly Leon-Cervantes are the only two varsity runners who were on the team a year ago. “They have taken on the leadership role and have done a good job handling it,” said Hasler. “Overall we have a very young team. They all have stepped up and have been performing very well.” Addison Trail was led by Suhei Valbuena, who finished 26th with a time of 20:58.10. Vanessa Garcia was 36th with a time of 23:15.80. Addison Trail had 34 playoff points (the total number of its opponents wins) heading into Week 8. In Week 8, the Blazers gained four points to push their total to 38. In Week 9 the Blazers have the opportunity to earn a maximum of six points. Last year’s playoff cutoff was 39. Addison Trail will face a Glenbard West team that again won the West Suburban Conference Silver Division with a perfect 6-0 mark. The Hilltoppers have outscored opponents 306-83 this season. Addison Trail’s lone regular-season loss last year was to Glenbard West.

The Blazers finished in fourth place in the WSC Gold with a 3-3 record. “A lot of teams in our conference have high seeds in the playoffs,” said Dini. “It’s a tough conference. We lost at Leyden 3-2 on a penalty kick and lost 4-1 to Downers Grove South and Morton won our conference. Addison Trail finished the regular season with an 11-5-2 overall record. “We’ve been dealing with a couple injuries but we should have those guys back by the state playoffs,” said Dini late last week. During one 10-game stretch, Addison Trail was 6-22. “We have been putting a lot of goals on the board,” said Dini. “Our offense has been coming along and our defense has been strong for the most part all year.” Junior forward Enrique Luna had 11 goals and seven assists through late last week, while sophomore Jonathan Hernandez had seven goals and 11 assists. “We have a junior and sophomore at forward and both of them are starting to finish more, which is nice,” said Dini. “Both of them play real well off each other.” Senior Damian Zielinski also has played well of late. “Damian scored in three of the last four games,”

The Addison Trail girls volleyball team punctuated its season-long improvement with a recent 25-18, 25-23 West Suburban Conference Gold Division victory over Downers Grove South. The win moved the Blazers to 4-1 overall in conference. If Addison Trail defeated Morton earlier this week it will earn no worse than a share of the WSC

Gold title. Addison Trail last won the conference in 2006. In the win against Downers Grove South, Alyssa Pham had one dig. Anastasia Labadessa had two aces, one kill, 16 assists and one dig. Carla Muell had one dig. Ciara Williams had seven digs. Danielle Tulke had two aces. Jessica Mell had one ace, two kills and two total blocks. Football team moves closer to conference title By Mike Miazga Correspondent

The IC Catholic Prep football team not only recently enhanced its chances of getting a home playoff game, but also moved another step closer to a conference title. The Knights outlasted defending Metro Suburban Conference West Division champion Glenbard South 34-28 in three overtimes in a Week 8 game played at Lewis Stadium in Elmhurst. The win moved IC Catholic Prep to 7-1 overall and 4-0 in MSC West play. TheKnights can wrap up the outright conference title Friday at home against Fenton.

Jordan Rowell again led the way for the Knights. He ran 29 times for 79 yards and four touchdowns. Quarterback Luke Ricobene completed 14 passes for 181 yards and one touchdown and ran nine times for 89 yards. Pat Jordan caught seven passes for 52 yards. Luke Calles caught two balls for 51 yards and one Outlook: IC Catholic Prep wins the Metro Suburban Conference West Division title outright with touchdown, while Pat Guinan had a victory here. And with an 8-1 record, the Knights would be almost assured of hosting a first-round three receptions for 63 yards. On defense, Anthony Silva led home playoff contest. The IC Catholic Prep boys soccer team saw its inaugural season come to a close after a 2-1 loss to Chicago Phoenix Academy in the Class 1A IC Catholic Prep regional. “We had a good game despite it being a loss,” said IC Catholic Prep coach Javier Andrade. “I don’t think Phoenix expected us to play the way we did. They were a well-prepared team that touched the ball well. We came out and played well until the end.” Francisco Monteon scored the Knights’ lone goal on a penalty kick. “It was 2-1 in the first half,” said Andrade. “We kept going to their goal in the second half but we couldn’t finish. We were very unlucky.” Andrade was extremely pleased with how the school’s first boys soccer season unfolded. “If I had to rank it zero to 10

Warriors boys soccer team begins postseason play By Mike Miazga Correspondent

The Willowbrook girls volleyball team dropped a recent 25-14, 25-13 West Suburban Conference crossover match to York. Grace Chantos had one dig. Olivia Pennebaker had one kill and four digs. Maya Bullock had one solo block. Maddie Weinhold had five assists and five digs. Emily Ligocki had two kills, four assists and three digs. Jamie Chiapetta had four kills and eight digs. Milena Sogura had one kill, while Kelly Conley had one kill, one ace and nine digs. The loss dropped Willowbrook to 13-15 overall. The Warriors concluded West Suburban Conference Gold Division play earlier this week

2-3 conference record into that match. The Warriors finished the regular season Wednesday at home against West Chicago. Willowbrook opens Class 4A regional play Monday at the Chicago St. Ignatius regional. Willowbrook, the No. 11 sectional seed, faces No. 22 seed Chicago Prosser at 7 p.m. The winner faces Oak Park-River Forest (No. 6 seed) on Tuesday at St. Ignatius.

Willowbrook is the No. 10 sectional seed, while Lake Park is the No. 8 seed. If Willowbrook defeated Lake Park it will play in the Lake Park regional championship game Saturday at 6 p.m.
