District 88 scores high on ISBE ‘Report Card’
Sees largest growth in PARCC scores in DuPage County By Dee Longfellow
is at 85.3 percent, compared to the state’s 82.4 percent. To see the complete report cards for District 88 and its two high schools (Addison Trail and Willowbrook), visit illinoisreportcard.com
“Our focus will remain on developing the whole student and providing a comprehensive educational experience to grow each student to his or her fullest potential,” Helton said. “Thank you for your continued support of District 88.”
FOR THE INDEPENDENT
According to the latest newsletter issued by School District 88, Superintendent Dr. Scott Helton announced the results of the District’s 2015-16 Illinois Report Card. “At District 88, our mission is to work for the continuous improvement of student achievement,” Helton said in his column. “Each and every day, District 88 works to build positive futures for its students inside the classroom and beyond. The results of the 2015-16 Illinois Report Card show the successes of District 88 and reflect the efforts of staff, Board of Education members, students, parents/guardians and community members.” Highlights of District 88’s 2015-16 report card include: • Graduation rate: District 88’s graduation rate continues to be above the state level. District 88’s four-year graduation rate is 86 percent, and the district’s five-year graduation rate is 91 percent. • Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers (PARCC) exam: Helton said District 88 had the largest growth in PARCC scores in DuPage County, in terms of the percentage of students who approached, met or exceeded standards on the PARCC exam. Helton continued to praise the staff, Board and community for the positive report. “We had a student-participation rate of 98 percent on the ELA portion of the exam and 96 percent on the Math portion,” he said. “The improvement in our scores truly is a testament to our staff, students, parents, guardians, Board of Education members and community members.” ISBE to offer SAT exam at no cost for juniors The Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) listened to District 88’s concerns regarding the PARCC exam, Helton said, adding that the ISBE will now provide the College Board’s SAT exam, including a writing component, at no cost to all public high school juniors this year. The ISBE said the SAT aligns with the Illinois Learning Standards and provides a college-reportable score for admissions purposes. It means Illinois high schools will transition from the ACT to the SAT as the state assessment. How many freshmen will graduate? Another component of the report card was how likely it is that the freshmen at a school will graduate in four years. ISBE reported that District 88 is above the state level in terms of the number of freshmen who are on track to graduate. District 88

Willowbrook to present its fall musical, ‘Mary Poppins’ VFW Post By Dee Longfellow
FOR THE VILLA PARK INDEPENDENT
Willowbrook High School’s Theater Department invites the community to “Stay Awake,” “Go Fly a Kite,” “Feed the Birds,” and have a “Spoonful of Sugar” as the students take you on a magical adventure in its fall musical, “Mary Poppins.” The show tells the story of the members of the Banks family, who are struggling to balance the “real-world” mindset of Mr. Banks (played by senior Tim Wagner) with the mischievous imaginations of the two Banks children, Jane and Michael (played by freshman Emily O’Brochta and her brother Sean, a student at St. Pius X Parish School). When a mysterious young woman named Mary Poppins appears at their home, the Banks discover she might be just what they’ve been looking for in a nanny – yet nothing like what they expected. Mary Poppins takes the children on many magical and memorable journeys, but Jane and
Michael aren’t the only ones who are changed by those experiences. Even grownups can learn a lesson or two through the world of Mary Poppins. “With our performance of ‘Mary Poppins,’ audience members can expect to revisit the things they love from the movie, but also be surprised with aspects based on the book by P. L. Travers,” said Theatre Director Regina Wathier. “This show is filled with elements of magic and surprise that are sure to captivate children and adults.” Juniors Julia and Kathleen Cicero, who will play the part of Mary Poppins, said it was a dream come true to perform that role. “We watched that movie growing up and absolutely love Julie Andrews as Mary Poppins,” Kathleen said. “It’s fun to make the character my own, yet take aspects of what Andrews did as well.” The character of Bert will be played by junior John DeAngelo, who said it has been an amazing opportunity to bring the story to life on stage.
“It’s a lot of fun to have such a big cast (about 130 students are part of the production) and perform such well-known musical numbers,” he said. He added although “Mary Poppins” is lighthearted and family-friendly, there is a deeper meaning to the storyline. “To me, the story teaches the lesson that there’s nothing wrong with having order in your life, but you also need to let your imagination run a little wild and enjoy being with those you love,” DeAngelo said. “Mary Poppins” will be performed at the Doris White Auditorium at Willowbrook High School Nov. 17, 18 and 19. Curtain times are 7 p.m. all three nights. For ticket prices and ordering information, go to dupage88.net/site/public/ files/?item=3121 On Nov. 18, the Kiwanis Club of Villa Park will host a Spaghetti Dinner Fundraiser before the show. Walsh, a senior, was recognized during the Oct. 31 District 88 Board of Education meeting. As a student, Walsh consistently pursues the most rigorous courses available at Willowbrook. When she graduates, she will have taken eight Advanced Placement (AP)/ college-level courses, as well as a multitude of honors courses. Walsh has been recognized as an AP Scholar and has been a member of Willowbrook’s Distinction Honor Roll each semester of her high school career. She also earned Outstanding Student honors from the social studies department and serves as Vice President of the National Honor Society and President of Willowbrook’s Social Studies Honor Society, Civitas. She also volunteers at her church, serving as a private tutor, and works at Willowbrook during fall registration. “Walsh is one of the most dedi-
cated and hardest-working students I’ve had the pleasure to work with,” said Chuck Sheridan, social studies teacher. “She’s a leader in the classroom, is remarkably wellinformed and helps bring classroom discussions to the next level. As this year’s President of Civitas, she has shown her talents as a leader and her excellent organizational and motivational skills. She also is just one of the kindest and most compassionate students I’ve known. I will truly miss her after she graduates this year, but consider it a privilege to have had the opportunity to work with her these past two years.” English Department Chair Brett Blair agreed. “Walsh has to be one of the kindest people I have worked with in my career,” Blair said. “She is hyper aware of her work, which makes her one of the most dedicated students I have in class this year. Walsh will see me for every piece of writing to ensure it is the best she can make it. College essays, AP essays, larger essays are all well-constructed due to the dedication and devotion to learning the craft and skill as best she can. Walsh really is an exemplary candidate as 88’s Best.” As she considers attending Marquette University, Loyola University Chicago or Elmhurst College, Walsh is excited to bring her infectious personality and contagious passion for success to the field of nursing. Week 12 Preview
Wilmington (11-0) at IC Catholic Prep (11-0) What: Quarterfinals of the Class 3A state football playoffs. Where: Lewis Stadium at Plunkett Athletic Complex, Elmhurst When: Likely Saturday, but check www.ihsa.org for official day and time. Seeds: Wilmington is the No. 4 seed on the top half of the Class 3A bracket; IC Catholic Prep is the No. 1 seed. Last week: Wilmington 38, Byron 18; IC Catholic Prep 65, PaxtonBuckley-Loda 0 Outlook: The top part of the Class 3A bracket has played out to seeds with only one exception (No. 6 Monticello is in the quarterfinals). Wilmington, located near Joliet, comes to Elmhurst without a loss on its record. The Wildcats, the No. 4 seed, won the Interstate Eight Conference Small Division. Wilmington had only two wins during the regular season against teams with winning records (one was 7-3, the other 5-4 that didn’t make the playoffs) and two wins against teams that made the playoffs and finished 5-5. The Wildcats then defeated a 6-4 Chicago Corliss team in the first round of the playoffs and a Byron team that came in 10-0 to last week’s game. Of note is Wilmington’s first game of the year against St. Joe-Ogden. Wilmington won that contest at home 48-12. IC Catholic Prep ended St. Joe-Ogden’s season last week in the playoffs with a 49-8 win in Elmhurst. The Knights continue to pile up points. They have scored 582 this season while giving up only 75 (7 shutouts and 9 games of 10 or fewer points allowed). Running back Jordan Rowell has rushed for 1,515 yards and 28 touchdowns this season. Quarterback Luke Ricobene has thrown for 2,022 yards and 24 touchdowns (only 5 interceptions). IC Catholic Prep’s defense has created 33 turnovers (22 interceptions and 11 fumble recoveries). The Knights have committed only six turnovers on offense this season. Up next: The winner heads to the semifinals to face either No. 2 Farmington (11-0) or No. 6 Monticello (11-0) in a game that will feature a pair of 12-0 teams. If IC Catholic Prep wins against Wilmington, it will hit the road regardless of semifinal opponent because both Farmington and Monticello have hosted twice and IC Catholic Prep will have hosted three playoff games. Farmington is a town west of Peoria, southeast of Galesburg and northeast of Macomb and is about 180 miles from Elmhurst. Monticello is 160 miles from Elmhurst and is located east of Springfield.
Fenton boys cross-country team fights its way back to state Bison enjoy strong postseason run
By Mike Miazga CORRESPONDENT
Fenton boys cross-country senior runner Anye Whyte said the Bison had something to prove this season. “We were disappointed that we missed state by two points,” he said. “Our big goal was to make it to state.” And that’s exactly what the Bison did and along the way they won a sectional title. “A big plus was winning that sectional title,” said Whyte, who was part of a Bison’s squad that competed in the Class 2A state finals meet this past weekend in Peoria. More importantly, Whyte said the postseason success the team enjoyed was made possible through hard work and having its sights set on improved pack running. “Our goal was to improve our pack split and make sure we move up together,” he said. “If we did that then we could be successful. It led to the sectional title. At the sectional, our pack split (from the first through fifth scoring runners) was sub 20 seconds. Throughout the whole season we’ve been moving up together as a pack. Improving on the pack is
what helped us win.” Fenton improved throughout the season minus top runner Jose Vazquez-Perez, who missed a majority of the season with a stress fracture suffered this past spring during the track season. Vazquez-Perez returned at the conference meet and then logged matching eighth-place finishes at the regional and sectional meets. Despite being injured VazquezPerez was a constant on the Fenton sidelines, helping and cheering on his teammates throughout the season. “Overall, our younger guys stepped up and that helped make up for some of the good guys we lost from last year’s team,” he said. “We work together as a team during workouts and races and we feed off each other during races. We help each other out when we need it.” Vazquez-Perez said it was evident early on that Fenton would field a strong team. “I saw that the team was going to make progress after our first meet where we did way better than the year before,” he said. “And then after we ran at Elmwood Park, that’s when I really saw we had the potential to win sectionals.” Vazquez-Perez admitted it was anything but fun sitting on the side-
lines for much of the season. “It was tough,” he said. “I wanted to be out there, but I had to be smart with when I was going to come back. Now it feels great to qualify for state as a team my senior year.” Whyte said while Vazquez-Perez was not running during meets, his presence still was felt in a major way. “Jose was with us the whole way,” he said. “He supported us and we pushed ourselves even harder.” Whyte loves the team-first mentality that has been a constant throughout the fall. “We are very close and supportive of each other,” he said. “We all work very hard and push each other to work even harder. In order for us to be successful we had to do it as a team. Everybody on the team contributed to our success. We appreciate everybody and everything they do.” Whyte added there is an extreme sense of accomplishment in getting to run in Peoria in November. “This is a huge accomplishment,” he said. “It’s always one of our big goals. To accomplish a big goal like this is very rewarding. We’re very proud of it. We have a very good varsity team that is very close and has a lot of depth.”

Willowbrook football team headed to state quarterfinals after beating Glenbrook North
By Mike Miazga Correspondent This year’s Willowbrook football team is going to a place where few other teams in program history have been. Girls on the Run thriving at Army Trail Army Trail School’s Girls on the Run club continues to thrive with girls participating in a local chapter of a larger organization that focuses on activating girls’ potential and encouraging them to pursue their dreams. The group, coordinated by staff members Allison Clarke, Karina Nutini, Dennisse Serrano and Ralene Hall, meets twice weekly, teaching life skills through interactive lessons and running games. At the end of the 10-week program, the girls will participate in a 5K run. This fall, mild temperatures have given participants the opportunity to do a lot of running outdoors!

Junior Alex Whyte was 182nd with a time of 17:07 (5:42.3 mile), while junior Bryan Medina was 193rd with a time of 17:24 (5:47.8 mile). Fenton also won a sectional team title this season. Addison Trail-Willowbrook girls swimming The Addison Trail-Willowbrook girls swimming team took third at the recent West Suburban Conference Gold Division meet. AT-Willowbrook finished with 217 points. Downers Grove South won the meet with 340 points. Hinsdale South was second at 269. Elissa Haake won the 200 free with a time of 1:57.96 and also won the 100 conference title in 54.86. AT-Willowbrook also was third in the frosh-soph meet with 195 points. AT-Willowbrook also was third at the JV level. On November 3, 2016, the Addison School District 4 Board of Education and the Addison Teachers’ Association (ATA) exchanged last and final offers as part of the ongoing efforts to successfully negotiate a contract for District 4 teachers. The Board is not encouraged. Without disclosing all of the details of the Board offer, the Board’s salary offer includes a pay increase of 4% for all ATA members in the first year of the contract, a pay increase of 3.5% for all ATA members in the second year of the contract, and a pay increase of 3.5% for all ATA members in the third year of the contract. These offered pay increases far exceed the current and anticipated rate of inflation. The Board believes that the pay increases being offered are far greater than the guaranteed pay increases that most will receive for the next three years
Addison Trail to host third annual Kermes Latino festival
On Nov. 12, Addison Trail will host its third annual Kermes Latino food festival from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the school. Sponsored by the Interact Club and Padres Latinos en Acción group, Kermes will feature traditional Latino dishes, as well as live entertainment (dancing and a disc jockey), a split-the-pot, an auction, raffles and familyfriendly activities. Admission is free and food tickets are $6 each. Proceeds will go toward scholarships for Addison Trail students. For details in English and in Spanish, go to dupage88. net/site/public/files/?item=3116
and that the health insurance offer is greater, as well. The Board is also concerned about the way negotiations have progressed. The teachers have made little or no movement in their positions since May 19, 2016, even though federal negotiators were brought into the bargaining process in August. Additionally, the Board feels the teachers union acted inappropriately when they shared their
point of view by distributing negotiations flyers to community members while handing out candy to children at the October 28, 2016 community “Trunk or Treat” event. “We want to negotiate a fair contract for our teachers,” said Board Negotiations Chair Jim Towns, “but we need to balance their needs against our future priorities and revenue —which are often unpredictable.”

Historical Society to host program by County historian
Worship Services Directory
The Addison Historical Society has announced that on Sunday, Dec. 4 at 1 p.m., it will host Jonathan Sebastian, museum supervisor at Fischer Farm in Bensenville, who will offer a free presentation called DuPage County History from Z to A. It will be held at the Addison VFW Post. A noted DuPage County historian, Sebastian takes a new approach to history by going backward. He starts from the present and reveals interesting facts per decade, often as far back as the Civil War. Guests may recognize what he is saying, having lived through those moments in history over the years – the 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s and on. The Historical Society invites all to stay for a free annual Harvest Pot-Luck dinner immediately after the presentation. Stay an extra hour and learn canasta from expert Tracy Ibeling.
