Rep. Conroy helps secure AT&T grant for Villa Park day care center VILLA PARK — On Monday, Nov. 16, State Rep. Deb Conroy (D-Villa Park) was scheduled to join staff from St. Paul Day Care along with local families, AT&T Illinois and State Sen. Tom Cullerton (D-Villa Park) to present an AT&T Investing in Illinois award. The day care center located inside St. Paul Lutheran Church at 545 So. Ardmore in Villa Park. Conroy recommended St. Paul Day Care for the $2,000 award after learning that the day care had to turn away families that no longer qualified under the governor-implement-

ed emergency cuts to the Child Care Assistance Program on July 1, 2015. The cuts reduced eligibility for the subsidized childcare program for parents who are working or enrolled in school to 50% of the federal poverty level, or a maximum monthly income of $838 for a family of three. The presentation, which is open to the public, will bring together families, which will be able to receive childcare due to the grant, along with local officials and day care staff. For more information, contact Conroy at 630-415-3520 or RepDebConroy@gmail.com.

LEAVE IT TO THE PROFESSIONALS

There is a difference.

While the Internet provides a wealth of information, users must be discriminating when considering the by ofJeffrey T. Boland source this knowledge and how they Licensed Orthodontic Specialist choose to use it. Unfortunately, some people are all too eager to follow the lead of people about whom they know nothing; as a result, they can face dire consequences. Such has been the case of those turning to Internet sources for orthodontic advice. They are told that they, too, can close gaps between teeth simply by wrapping improperly positioned teeth in rubber bands and pulling them closer to adjacent teeth. This free advice is as valuable as its cost. The fact is that moving teeth with uncontrolled force at an unrestrained pace risks permanent tooth loss. Crooked teeth can be difficult to clean, putting you at risk for cavities and gum disease. Orthodontic treatments help move teeth that are crooked or that do not fit together correctly. By fixing these problems, orthodontics can also help keep your mouth healthy. To schedule a free orthodontic consultation, please call our office. With over 30 years of combined experience, our doctors are dedicated to providing you with the highest quality of orthodontic care. Our office hours are by appointment. The Villa Park Board of Trustees Formal Meeting at Village Hall on Monday, Nov. 9 began with the Board voting unanimously to reappoint Carol Davis to the Community Pride Commission with a term lasting through 4/30/18. • During the Committee of the Whole portion of Monday’s meeting, Trustee Bob Wagner noted that 23% of the total property tax levy in 2005 was used for pensions, with that total going up to 33% this year. Wagner asked what measures could be taken to lessen this burden in the future. According to Village Manager Richard Keehner, 51% of the overall property tax revenue goes toward police and fire department pension payments. Keehner suggested supporting pension reform as one possible solution. He noted the Village will have a pension discussion in December to outline what Villa Park’s pent ion situation is. One solution proposed by Keehner is to combine the police and fire pensions to streamline the administrative costs and increase the rate

of return on retirement fund investments. • During the Village President’s report portion, Deborah Bullwinkel asked for an update on the Cortesi Park renovation, street resurfacing and the North Ardmore streetscape project. According to Parks and Recreation Director Greg Gola, Cortesi Park is progressing, with sidewalks being poured. Flagpoles, sod and the sprinkler system should be installed soon, weather permitting. The 2015 Street Resurfacing project is complete except for some alleys and the area behind Village Hall, according to Director of Public Works Vydis Juskelis. The concrete work on the Ardmore streetscape project is complete. Benches and trash receptacles have been placed. Lamps will not be installed until the spring of 2016. • Bullwinkel also announced that the Villa Park Ace Hardware would host the Lou Manfredini radio show on Saturday morning, Nov. 21 from 7-10 a.m. • She asked residents not to push fallen leaves into the street as they clog sewers. Please bag yard waste for collection. During the Consent Agenda portion of Monday’s meeting, the Board voted to pass seven items including: • The Village Bill Listing

dated November 9, 2015 in the amount of $611,972. • Approval of the minutes from the Village Committee of the Whole and Formal Board meetings for October 26, 2015. • A resolution estimating the Village’s property tax levy for 2015 by 0.8% (maximum allowed). This would include a total tax levy of $9,362,781, or 2.5% more than last year including the bond repayments from the 2014 road referendum. A final budget vote is scheduled for the December 14 Village Board meeting. • A resolution authorizing change order #2 to the contract between the Village and Orange Crush, LLC for the 2015 street resurfacing project. The change calls for an addition of $10,342 bringing the contract amount to $1,670,003. • A resolution authorizing a contract with A Lamp Concrete Contractors Inc., of Schaumburg, for the 2015 East Park Boulevard improvement project in the amount of $1,397,533. This work will cover improvements to Park Blvd. from Villa Avenue east to Rte. 83 and is funded with both referendum and non-referendum funds. • A resolution authorizing an engineering services agreement between Villa Park and Clark Dietz, Inc. for the 2015 East Park Boulevard improve-

ment project in the amount of $115,000. • The Board also passed the first reading of an Ordinance allowing Villa Park to annex three properties: 2N151, 2N141 and 909 North Ardmore Ave. The three residential properties are surrounded by three sides by Villa Park and Addison on the fourth side. According to Village staff, annexation will improve emergency services for these parcels. All three already receive water and garbage services from the Village of Villa Park. A second and final reading of the Ordinance was scheduled for the Board meeting held on Monday, Nov. 16. The final vote took place after the press time for this issue of The Independent.

Willowbrook senior Cameron Zunkel signs to play baseball for University of Illinois Springfield

Zunkel will pitch for the Mens Baseball Team at University of Illinois Springfield. He has played baseball since he was about 4 years old and has been on the varsity team at Willowbrook for two years. And baseball seems to be a family sport, as Zunkel’s brother, Tyler (a 2014 Willowbrook graduate), is playing for College of DuPage. Zunkel said the highlight of his baseball career so far has been being named to the West Suburban Conference Gold Division All-Conference Team and the Daily Herald All-Area Team last year. “I like that baseball is a team sport – each player has to do his part,” Zunkel said. “It’s competitive, but it also is relaxing for me. I’ve always loved this sport, and I never want to stop playing.”

Willowbrook senior Matt Rowland signs to wrestle for The University of North Carolina

Rowland will wrestle at 174 pounds for The University of North Carolina. He has participated in wrestling for 10 years and has been on the varsity team at Willowbrook all four years of his high school career. Rowland will leave Willowbrook as one of the most decorated wrestlers in the school’s history. He holds nearly every school record and is on track to break the record for most wins. He also is a two-time Illinois High School Association (IHSA) State placer, earning 5th place his sophomore year and 2nd place last year. “Wrestling has given me everything, and now it has helped me get a college education,” Rowland said. “It has taught me the importance of working hard and what it means to be dedicated.” He added his goal is to win a national title at The University of North Carolina, where he plans to major in business.

Of stroller-pushing joggers, Love Pink and hookah bars Sandro Sez... Mike Sandrolini Columnist ily decals plastered on the rear window, I maintain a safe following distance. I swear these decals give some drivers carte blanche to drive, well, stupid. • As a dog lover myself, there’s usually a special bond between dog and owner. That said, is it really necessary to have Fido sitting in your lap while you’re behind the wheel? • I can’t decide which sight is more disturbing: Older women who wear Love Pink attire or 65-year-old men with long hair in a ponytail. • As Millennials make their way into the work force over the next several years, I’m convinced all the economy will need in order to function are fitness centers, hookah bars, Panera Bread and Whole Foods outlets, video game, smartphone, skateboard and overthe-knee shorts manufacturers (since I’ve seen youths—and some middle-aged men, for that matter—wearing shorts in 30-degree weather), coffee shops, smartphone dealerships and movie theaters. • I kind of miss seeing someone standing outside a Liberty Tax Service office trying to drum up business, dressed as the Statue of Liberty. • I can’t be the only person in the suburbs who’s frustrated that more and more first-run theaters are opting for reserved seating. So much for going to a movie at the last minute and sitting wherever there’s an available seat. • Watching the last 10 minutes of The Bachelor, to me, is quite amusing. I tune in to find out which women he’s dumped, and then watch these women fall apart as if they’ve dated him for a year. • Speaking of reality TV, whatever happened to Honey Boo-Boo since her show got cancelled? If she’s looking for a new gig, ABC-TV should consider bringing her on The View as a co-host. Honey BooBoo can’t be any worse than Joy Behar. • You know things are getting bad with the budget impasse

in Springfield when the state has to delay payouts to lottery winners who’ve won more than $600. • The next time a stranger hands me his or her smartphone and asks me to take a pic of them and/or their friends, I’ll take the pic, ask for their email address and send them

an invoice for photography services rendered. • Shakespeare’s opening line from his poem, “All the world’s a stage” needs to be amended. In 2015, it’s “all the world’s a photo-op.” • I’ve concluded that I need to buy a rolodex for the dozens of computer and smartphone-

related passwords I can’t ever remember. • It doesn’t take much to make me happy. Just keep those Dos Equis “Most Interesting Man in the World” commercials coming. Mike Sandrolini can be reached by email at: rvpnews2@gmail.com.

houghts, musings, peeves, observations and what have you as I try to recall how many times I’ve been a victim of microaggression … • Is it just me, or am I the only one who’s noticed that Marie Osmond is always the spokesperson for any infomercial that happens to promote a meals program to lose weight? • Here we go again. That annoying 24/7 Holiday Lite station (or whatever they call it nowadays) is back on the airwaves, playing Last Christmas, Jingle Bell Rock, (Simply Having a) Wonderful Christmastime and Merry Christmas Darling, ad nauseam for the next few weeks. Speaking of micro-aggression, I think my eardrums are already a victim of micro-aggression. Is there any way to get the FCC to ban this station? • I’m all for keeping physically fit, yet I’ll never understand those who jog around their neighborhoods pushing their kids in one of those jogging strollers. Or those who force their dogs to jog with them. And recently, I witnessed a first: a woman jogger who was pushing her kid in a stroller AND having the dog run with her. Talk about multi-tasking. Sheesh! • Coinciding with the above item, just when you think you’ve seen everything, the other day in Elmhurst I spotted what appeared to be a teen-ager riding his bike with the family dog on a leash as the poor dog trots in order to keep up with the teen. Whatever happened to taking the dog for a walk? • Fantasy football, of course, is big business nowadays, but I immediately change the station when sports talk radio programs devote entire segments to fantasy participants calling the station and asking which player, or players, they should put in their lineup. • What’s with those bathtubs in the Cialis® commercials? On second thought, I really don’t want to know. • Don’t you just love standing in line at the 7-Eleven with five people in front of you as the person at the cash register takes forever to purchase 10 different lottery tickets? • Why is Italian Wedding soup called Italian Wedding soup? I’ve never had this soup at a wedding, Italian or otherwise. • Whenever I notice vehicles with those stick-figure fam-

AP Spanish class visits Museum of Mexican Art VILLA PARK — On Nov. 10, about 28 students in Advanced Placement (AP) college-level Spanish at Willowbrook had the opportunity to visit the National Museum of Mexican Art in Chicago to see the Día de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, exhibit. Students also were able to tour the murals in Pilsen, a Chicago neighborhood. AP Science teacher Valeria Carrillo said the field trip was conducted entirely in Spanish, which allowed students to apply what they’ve learned in class. “The goal of this trip was to show students they know more than they think and how awesome it is to interact with people using the language they have been studying for up to four years,” Carrillo said. “This visit enabled them to learn about Día de los Muertos and how that tradition shapes the Mexican culture and, in turn, how culture shapes the language.”

A Monthly Guide to Living Your Life to the Fullest

Heart yourself with Omega-3s about the importance of a diet rich in Omega-3 fatty acids and its associated health benefits. However, despite this knowledge, it can be difficult to consume enough Omega-3s through diet alone. Knowing where to find the best sources of Omega3s can be key to a heart-healthy lifestyle. 186149

(BPT) — Across the globe, heart health is becoming a growing concern. In order to combat a rising epidemic of heart disease and other heart-related illnesses, more and more Americans are placing a greater emphasis on the critical role of nutrition and a balanced diet. More than likely you’ve heard

What are Omega-3s? Omega-3 fatty acids are a form of polyunsaturated fat that helps support heart and joint health while maintaining healthy blood pressure levels. Considered “essential” because the body needs them to function but can’t create them, Omega-3s must come from dietary sources like fatty fish, nuts or supplements such as krill oil. Unlike “bad” fats that can clog arteries and raise cholesterol, these “good” fats play a crucial role in reducing the risk of heart disease. The benefits In addition to supporting a healthy heart, here are just some of the great Omega-3 benefits: *Supports healthy triglyceride levels *Supports eye health and vision *Supports healthy arteries *Important for cognitive (or brain) health *May support joint and bone

health *Important for healthy skin Omega-3 deficiency symptoms It’s also important to remember that the following symptoms may be caused by a lack of Omega-3s: *Rough or dry, bumpy skin *Dry, dull, brittle hair and dandruff *Soft, peeling or brittle nails

*Excessive thirst *Difficulty sleeping *Difficulty paying attention *Excessive mood swings, depression or unwarranted anxiety Good sources of Omega-3 On average, Americans do not get enough Omega-3 fatty acids in their diet. Since Omega-3s are not produced naturally within the body, you can increase your daily intake with the following omegarich foods and supplements: *Fatty fish (i.e., mackerel, herring, lake trout, salmon, anchovies and tuna) *Walnuts *Flaxseeds *Dairy and Eggs *Supplements (i.e., MegaRed Krill Oil) For those who can’t or would rather not eat fish or the other food sources high in Omega-3s, supplements can be a great way to bridge nutrient gaps. Not all supplements are the same, so it’s important to do your research and choose a product that has been clinically tested and proven to be beneficial. One supplement that has been proven to increase Omega-3 index within just 30 days is MegaRed Krill Oil because it’s an easily absorbed Omega-3. Furthermore, MegaRed is sustainably sourced from Antarctic krill and has no fishy aftertaste, a side effect of some other Omega-3 supplements. Consuming a balanced diet of healthy foods and supplementing that diet is the key to unlocking heart and overall health. Learn more For more heart-healthy information, visit www.MegaRed. com.

(BPT) — Research shows that as the temperature drops, your blood pressure tends to increase. The changing weather brings cooler temperatures - and increases your risk for heart attack, stroke and other serious health conditions. Measure Up/Pressure Down is a national high blood pressure campaign, led by the American Medical Group Foundation, and aims to empower people to measure, monitor and maintain a healthy blood pressure. As the weather changes, Measure Up/Pressure Down and campaign supporter United Health Foundation have three tips for your heart health: 1. Understand high blood pressure: High blood pressure, also called hypertension by medical professionals, means that the force of blood pushing through your body is too strong. That pressure puts a strain on your arteries, which carry blood from your heart to the rest of your body. In colder weather, blood vessels constrict more than normal, which raises blood pressure. By understanding what high blood pressure is, you can make lifestyle changes to stay on top of the disease. 2. Practice healthy habits: Healthy habits -such as being physically active, eating healthy and limiting alcohol - can be critical to managing your high blood pressure year round, especially during fall and winter. Try to get up and move for at least 30 min-

Addison Trail girls basketball team has high hopes By Mike Miazga Correspondent

Addison Trail girls basketball coach Rob Schader has a roster of 12 this season. And he’s not afraid to put any of them into game situations. “We legitimately have 11 or 12 kids that will play on a given night,” he said. “We have a four-post rotation and we’ll rotate in the other eight guards. It’s nice to have that kind of depth. I feel comfortable playing all those girls right away.” Back for the Blazers from last year’s team are seniors Maria Koulogeorgas (guard), Nicole Pudlo (guard), Tegan Graff (post), Ksymena Kwasnik (guard) and Marina Stokes (guard). Senior Symone Jones-Tate (post) is back with

the team after not playing last year. Newcomers include juniors Alyssa Pham (guard), Diana Graciano (post), Jasmin Mehmeti (post), Diamond Pikulyk (post), Marie Baumgartner (guard) and sophomore Nicolette Scorza (guard). “We’re going to push the tempo and mix things up defensively,” said Schader. “We’re extremely tall this season. It’s the tallest we have been.” Schader compares this group to one of his past team’s (that included standout Jasmine Little) that won 16 games. “We have more talent than that team and we’re even bigger,” he said. “We should be able to rebound the ball better this year. We don’t have anybody that is 6-foot, but we have girls who are 5-8, 5-9 and 5-10 and they are quick and can get to balls. A girls like Jasmin (Mehmeti)

is quick and can get to those rebounds and Diana works so hard and is physical. Nicole Pudlo, who hurt her knee two years ago, is back on the wing and she’s tall at 5-8. Nicci Scorza is like Gumby out there. It seems like her arms go forever and she’s always getting her hands on everything. She’s good at closing out on the wing.” Schader likes the junior-senior mix of this group. “It’s a good mix of juniors and seniors and one sophomore,” he said. “The juniors did really well as sophomores last year. They beat Downers Grove South, Willowbrook and Hinsdale South twice. They played well. We’ll see if it transfers. We’re going to be able to do a lot of things with this group because we can play so many girls. We have kids who can score and they’ve bought into what we are

doing defensively. I think we’re going to be able to shut some teams down.” Schader said there will be no easy games in the West Suburban Conference Gold Division this season. “Proviso East is always good and Morton will be very solid. Their sophomores won every game last year,” he said. “Everybody is tough in the conference. Our conference is tough in basketball in general. Every night will be a challenge, but I expect us to compete and win games. We are going to be very competitive this year.” Addison Trail opened play earlier this week in its tournament it co-hosts with Fenton. Addison Trail has games scheduled in the tournament with Lane Tech, Fenton, Elgin and Leyden.

Fenton girls basketball team ready for 2015-2016 season By Mike Miazga Correspondent

The Fenton girls basketball team may be short on varsity experience, but veteran coach Tim Anderson is not panicking. “One of the things you look at is returning varsity experience,”

he said. “We just do not have a lot of it. That will be one of the factors in how we get started. But as the season goes on the other kids on the team will start gaining experience and will improve. It’s an obstacle right now. There is no substitute for experience. You have to earn it. Our girls are

working hard.” Fenton returns seniors Jessica Bango and Courtney Susmarski, along with junior Krysta Wilson and sophomore Jamie Minard. Bango is in her third varsity season, while Susmarski and Wilson are in their second varsity seasons. Minard spent a half of last

Morrone finished second in the 200 with a time of 1:58.71, while Koterba was eighth with a time of 2:02.49. Michelle Ramirez finished 15th in the 200 IM, while Christiansen was 18th. Freshman Natalie Obrzut took 16th in the 50. Johnston was fifth in the butterfly with a time of 1:01.50. Margaret Kwak took 21st. Koterba placed ninth in the 100 with a time of 56.22. Ramirez was 11th in the 500, while Emily Christiansen was 17th. Anna Christiansen was 15th in the backstroke, while Obrzut was 17th. Morrone was sixth in the breaststroke with a time of 1:09.47. AT-Willowbrook placed seventh in the 400 relay with a time of 3:50.74. That team included Johnston, Obrzut, Ramirez and Koterba. Fenton girls swimming Fenton junior Cassidy Feddersen qualified for this weekend’s state finals in diving out of the Downers Grove North sectional. Feddersen finished with 339.30 points.

Fenton took 10th as a team in the sectional. Fenton’s 200 medley relay was 10th. That team featured Kanah Hori, Lexi Petrella, Feddersen and Jasmin Kon. Agnes Gasior was 21st in the 200, while Justine Petrow was 23rd. Petrella was 21st in the 200 IM, while Emily Jarecki was 22nd. Hori placed 15th in the 50 free, while Feddersen was 17th. Emma Butts was 13th in diving. Alexandra Zimbrakos was 18th in the butterfly. Jarecki was 20th in the butterfly. Hori was 15th in the 100, while Kon was 23rd. Gasior was 22nd in the 500, while Petrow was 24th. Fenton’s 200 free relay was 10th with Feddersen, Gasior, Petrella and Hori. Zimbrakos was 22nd in the backstroke, while Butts was 23rd. Petrella was 19th in the breaststroke, while Kon was 22nd. Fenton’s 400 relay team was 11th with Butts, Kon, Petrow and Gasior swimming in that event.

AT-Willowbrook’s Haake qualifies for state swimming in three events By Mike Miazga Correspondent

Addison Trail-Willowbrook girls swimming freshman Elissa Haake made quite a debut at the recent Downers Grove North sectional. Haake qualified for this week’s state meet in three different events. She helped AT-Willowbrook finish sixth as a team in the sectional with 124.5 points. Haake finished third in the 50 and qualified for state with a time of 24.46. She also took third in the 100 and earned a state berth with a time of 3:53.16. Haake also was part of the AT-Willowbrook 200 relay team that took second and qualified for state with a time of 1:38.27. That team also included junior Annalise Morrone, senior Melissa Johnnston and senior Meghan Koterba. In the 200 medley relay, ATWillowbrook took sixth with a time of 1:52.22. That team featured freshman Anna Christiansen, Morrone, Johnston and Haake.

season on the varsity. “We had 12 years of returning varsity experience last year, which is a fair amount,” said Anderson. “We don’t have that this year and that’s what we are dealing with.” Anderson noted those players with experience will have even larger roles this season. “The kids who have that experience will be the provider of valuable leadership,” he said. “The younger kids will pick up on that. We do have some outstanding leaders. Our two seniors, Jessica and Courtney, are excellent. You want them to be the model of showing this is what it’s like being on varsity. These two are something special. They are doing just that. I couldn’t ask for more from them. They are going to have to carry the load at the beginning of the season as the others amass experience.” Anderson said he’s at a big advantage because of the group of girls he has this season. “It’s a great group of girls that works hard,” he said. “As the season goes on we’re going to keep getting better. I think they are up to the challenge. We have a list up on the wall of things you have to have and team chemistry is something you have to have. The chemistry we have right now is good. We know we have some tough parts of our schedule and that’s when you need that chemistry the most.” Anderson added the team’s character showed during last year’s 7-22 campaign. “If you look at our record, OK it wasn’t

that great,” he said. “It still was an absolutely satisfying season. They stuck with us the entire season and to me that’s another important way of measuring success. Not everybody can win every game, but everybody can stick together.” The rest of the team includes Jenny Sanchez (junior guard), Julia DeGuia (junior guard), Danielle Shawaluk (junior guard), Patty Acosta (junior guard), Jezalyn Tapia (freshman guard), Ashley Lira (freshman guard), Jessica McCauley (sophomore post), Erika Vega (junior post) and Giselle Gomez (junior post). Anderson knows his team will be challenged in the Metro Suburban Conference West Division. “We found out last year the new conference is tough,” he said. “Our division was outstanding with a lot of outstanding teams and outstanding players. It’s still going to be extremely competitive.” Fenton is again co-hosting a tournament with Addison Trail to kick off the season. “What I like about this tournament is it’s perfect for us,” he said. “We play with four teams where in any year, anybody can win this thing. There’s a lot of balance and that will help get us ready to go into our challenging conference. You can tell the girls about that but they have to get out there and experience it. We’re doing our best to prepare them for that.” Fenton plays Leyden in the tournament at home at 7:15 p.m. Thursday and hosts Addison Trail Saturday at home at 6:15 p.m.

LANSING, MICH. – The award-winning Pure Michigan campaign announced today it is joining forces with the Michigan-based company Clicktivated to offer a new way to explore travel opportunities in the state. Michigan is the first state tourism office to offer Clicktivated’s cutting-edge technology allowing visitors to engage with 10 Pure Michigan commercials to discover information about specific destinations within the video spots. When a scene of interest plays, users can click on the icon to the right of the screen and get immediate access to individual websites of featured destinations to view activities, make reservations and help build a personal travel itinerary. “This technology makes our advertising spots truly interactive, providing viewers with real-time information on the destinations highlighted throughout the ads,” said David Lorenz, Vice President of Travel Michigan, part of the Michigan Economic Development Corporation. “We are proud to be working with this growing Michigan company and to be the first adopter of this technology for tourism marketing.” While the Clicktivated content is interactive, it does not disrupt the original video content and viewing experience through pop-ups or other distractions. The Pure Michigan Clicktivated videos will work across all devices and browsers, as well as inside Facebook. Videos featuring the Clicktivated technology can be found at www.michigan.org/explore. Pure Michigan is a brand representing business, talent and tourism initiatives across Michigan. These efforts are driven by the Michigan Economic Development Corporation, which serves as the state’s marketing arm and lead advocate for business growth, jobs and opportunity with a focus on helping grow Michigan’s economy. It’s no secret that Wisconsin takes great pride in beer. With more than 100 breweries across the state ranging from local brewpubs to worldwide favorites, there’s plenty to choose from. We’ve hand-picked five Wisconsin brews that not only taste great, but have an interesting story behind their names! Riverwest Stein, Lakefront Brewery – Milwaukee Riverwest Stein is a brilliant amber lager with a bit of a sweet caramel taste and just the right amount of bitterness after each drink. Named for the hardworking residential neighborhood in which Lakefront was founded, Riverwest Stein is one of this Milwaukee brewery’s most popular beers. Head over to this Travel Green Wisconsin-certified business for a drink in the beer hall or an incredibly entertaining brewery tour. Ouisconsing Red Ale, Central Waters Brewing – Amherst This sweet, malty red ale gets its name from the Algonquian word for the Wisconsin River as it was first recorded by French explorer Jacques Marquette. Central Waters Brewing began making beer in 1996 near the river in Junction City. They moved to their current location in Amherst in 2007, where they have an open tap room and offer free tours on Fridays and Saturdays. Rocky’s Revenge, Tyranena Brewing Company – Lake Mills Rock Lake in Lake Mills is well known for its local lore of underwater pyramids believed to have been built by Native Americans when water levels were much lower. These natives called the lake Tyranena, and an old legend claims that a giant serpent protects the sacred stone pyramids. This beast is known today as Rocky, and Rocky’s Revenge is Tyranena Brewing’s tasty offering to this legend. It’s a bourbon-aged American brown ale with a creamy nutty taste. Drop in and sample their offering to Rocky with their tasting room, beer garden and free brewery tour.
