The lobby area of the Anna Lebiecka-Helma Insurance Agency Inc., located at 401 E. North Ave in Villa Park, is left in shambles after police said a 21-year-old Lombard woman drove her vehicle right through the front window of the business. Luckily, there were no injuries reported.
The Villa Park Board of Trustees meeting held at Village Hall on Monday, October 24. As Village President Deborah Bullwinkel was absent, the Board voted Trustee Al Bulthuis to conduct the meeting as President Pro Tem. • The first order of business was the reading of a Proclamation recognizing November 15, 2016 as School Board Members Day. Village Manager Richard Keehner read the Proclamation. Dani Brink, director of community relations for District
88, accepted gave a short speech on behalf of the volunteers who serve on the local School Board. • The Board next heard a presentation on the proposed Washington Street sewer separation project by a representative of Christopher B. Burke Engineering. The area under consideration is approximately 3000 acres. This project is needed to separate storm water drainage from the ‘dirty’ water sewer system drainage for about 400 homes. The project will require replacing the piping many areas along south Washington Street. The cost of the project is estimated to be $8.7 million. • The Villa Park Lions Club operates the beer tent at the Oktoberfest community event, and splits the pro-
ceeds with the Village. Lion ‘Wild’ Bill Reeves presented a check for $4,777 to the Village from this year’s event. • During the Consent Agenda portion of the Monday’s Formal Agenda, the Board voted unanimously to approve nine items, including: a) The Village Bill Listing dated October 24, 2016 in the amount of $263,644. b) Minutes from the Village Committee of the Whole meeting for October 10, 2016. c) Minutes from the Village Formal Board meeting for October 10, 2016. d) The First and Final reading of an Ordinance authorizing the sale of police radios to the Harvey Police
Dept. The Villa Park Police Dept. switched to new portable radios in 2011, as required by DuComm (local 911 emergency dispatch network) in order to comply with the Starcom Network. The City of Harvey recently expressed an interest in purchasing the old radios. This Ordinance allows the sale of all 63 radios and accompanying equipment to Harvey for $3,500. e) A resolution allowing the appointment of members to the Village Stormwater Oversight Committee. Reminder: Don’t just follow the President’s race
FOR THE INDEPENDENT
As the Nov. 8 Election draws closer and closer, the Independent hopes to share with its readers the information they need to know as our country, as well as our state and county, decide who will serve in the upcoming terms of office. Early voting began October 24 and will continue to Nov. 5. If you’d rather miss the rush on Nov. 8 or if you plan to be out of town, there are several places to vote early. Check with the DuPage Election Commission at dupageco.org/election/ to find a place closest to you. You do NOT have to vote early in your own community, you may early vote anywhere it is being offered, regardless of your place of residence. Don’t forget to bring ID to the polling booth – early or day-of. A reminder: It’s easy to get caught up in the Presidential election, especially this year when there has been so much drama back and forth between the candidates. Just remember, there are people representing you at the State level and on the County Board and you’ll want to pay just as much attention to those elections as the national. Look at your most recent property tax bill and you’ll see where your local tax dollars are going. If you wish to learn more about an individual candidate, do a Google search of that candidate’s name, as most have their own web sites with information about their policies and priorities. For patients who want a more minimalist approach to arch-wire attachment, there is the option of using clear Damon brackets. These self-ligating brackets are next to invisible compared with traditional steel brackets. In addition, Damon brackets use a clever slide mechanism to retain the arch wire in place. Because no rubber bands or attachment wires are needed, this sliding Damon bracket requires fewer adjustments. The Damon system is also more comfortable and more aesthetically pleasing, and it requires shorter treatment time.

Events worth celebrating
Life is a series of events, and they seem to be multiplying. I’m not referring to events like loading the dishwasher or combing your hair or walking the dog. I’m talking Events – the ones with a cap-
ital E that are cause for celebration. Exclamation point. This category of Events used to be a manageable group. Birthdays. Anniversaries. Mother’s and Father’s Days and even Grandparent’s Day, if

weren’t established until 1870. Contributor There were four of them. Seven more have been added in the last 150 years, the last being Martin Luther thus far held the national holiday cap King, Jr. Day added in 1983. The federal government may have at 11, but that doesn’t stop the rest of us from creating our own. This became evident during the crescendo leading up to my daughter’s wedding last summer. I used to think of a wedding as a celebration, but I now know I was selling myself short. A wedding is not just one Event. It is many. It is a celebration of celebrations. A pandemonium of parties. In a good way. Mostly. When my husband and I got engaged, he presented me with a ring and a question. I gave him an answer and that was that. He didn’t organize an elaborate, professionally choreographed dancing entourage made up of a few hundred of our closest friends to help him with his proposal. He didn’t hire a sky writer or plan a FIND FAITH & FRIENDSHIP AT catered party to commemorate the day. He didn’t pop the question via a note on a boat with a goat while floatLCMS ing in a moat. He just asked and I answered. It was a moment shared by the two of us. I don’t remember feelSATURDAY WORSHIP SERVICE 5:00 P.M. ing the least bit slighted. Willowbrook culinary arts students participate in two competitions On Oct. 26, students in Willowbrook Career and Technical Education (CTE) teacher Amy Nowak’s Culinary Arts II class competed in a Chili Cook-Off. Participants had to research a recipe to make as part of the course’s sauce, soup and starch unit. Entries were evaluated by seven judges, who rated the chili on presentation, flavor, texture, consistency, blend of spices, aroma and color. The judges were substitute teacher Amanda Bolan, math teacher Liz Zwart, substitute teacher John Price, literacy/reading teacher Kathy Lipowski, English teacher Dan Fliegel, social studies teacher Andrew Levin and substitute teacher Gabriel Rodriguez. The winners of the competition are senior Nicholas Karlovich, junior Braian Shima, senior Kayla Thomas and sophomore Jazmin Nunez Ocampo. As members of the winning team, those students will get to choose a meal to make and enjoy. WB culinary students win dessert competition Willowbrook culinary arts students who are part of The Brook Catering Co. also participated in a dessert/treat competition on Oct. 27. Three teams participated, and they made and sold items such as waffles, horchata, Oreo truffles, cinnamon

rolls, puppy chow and Rice Krispies treats. Nowak said the students had to plan all aspects of making the snacks – including developing a budget and marketing their items. Junior George Boulahanis, sophomore Christiana Aviles, sophomore Andrew Cuellar, senior Antoinette McKissack and junior Daniel Rocha won the competition for earning the most profit. As the winners, they will get to use the money they earned to buy lunch.

Flood Plain Ordinance requirements due to hardship. Economic Development Director Jan Fiola, Community Development Director Patrick Grill and Deputy Director of Public Works Rich Salerno were recommended to serve on this committee. f) A resolution approving the 2017 Sugar Creek Golf Course annual budget in the amount of $1,079,891. Revenues are projected to be $1,082,872 for a projected net profit of $2,981. Villa Park and the Elmhurst Park District operate SCGC under the terms of an intergovernmental agreement. g) A resolution establishing the regular meeting dates for the Board of Trustees in 2017. h) A resolution approving the holiday schedule for the 2017 that establishes which Village buildings will be closed on those dates. i) A resolution authorizing the Village to enter into an engineering agreement with Christopher B. Burke Engineering, Ltd. for the Biermann Ave. combined sewer separation project in the amount of $43,200. • The Board then voted on a First and Final reading of an Ordinance approving a conditional use for the existing Sparkle Car Wash at 780 N. Addison Rd. This Ordinance follows the Oct. 6 public hearing and discussion where the Planning & Zoning Commission recommended approval of the business with conditions including signage, business hours architecture of the building and landscaping of the property.
• The Board also approved, in a First and Final reading, an Ordinance approving an increase in the number of Class EEE liquor licenses from five to six. The Jimmy’s Street Tacos restaurant, to be located at 117 W. St. Charles Rd. (the former Taco Bell), requested the license. • With another First and Final vote, the Board approved an Ordinance amending the fees for parking in the Village’s commuter parking lot at the Metra train station. The changes include implementation of a smartphone app in the south lot to allow automatic payments as well as a new payment machine. The new rates will be $2 per day, with a quarterly permit rate increasing from $82.50 to $100. • The Board also approved, with another First and Final reading, vacating a portion of the Harrison Street right-of-way. Property owners to the north and south have reached an agreement on how the right of way should be divided, according to Village staff. Two lots (1120 S. Oakland and 1200 S. Oakland) were involved. As part of the vacation request process, an appraisal was conducted to determine the value of the right-of-way property. Another approval vote was required to approve the administrative subdivision for the Doan/Faith Church subdivision. That property was valued at $18,000 and both parties paid $9,000. Trustee Chris Aiello abstained from these votes due to a conflict of interest.

The Willowbrook football team traveled to Quincy, Ill. on Saturday, Oct. 29 to face the Blue Devils in the first round of Class 7A state playoffs, and came back with a 32-13 come from behind victory. The Warriors hadn’t won a playoff game since 1996.
Willowbrook football team wins first playoff game in 16 years By Mike Miazga CORRESPONDENT
The long road trip for the Willowbrook football team was well worth the effort. The Warriors made the trek down to Quincy High School and came away with a come-from-behind 34-13 victoryover the Blue Devils in the first round of the Class 7A state playoffs. Willowbrook won the game when it scored 28 unanswered points in the fourth quarter. Kevon Dobbins erased a 13-12 deficit when he returned a fumble recovery for a touchdown. Jack Jessen followed with a rushing touchdown and Jacob Entwhistle returned an interception for a touchdown. The game was 0-0 after the first quarter and Willowbrook took a 6-3 lead into halftime via a Jon Kelso touchdown. A Quincy field goal tied the game at 6-6 heading into the fourth quarter and Quincy went up 13-6 before Willowbrook mounted its comeback that started with the first of Jessen’s two rushing touchdowns. Willowbrook is the No. 23 seed in the 32-team 7A bracket, while Quincy was the No. 10 seed. The win was Willowbrook’s first in the playoffs since the 1990 season when it defeated Maine South in Class 5A action, snapping a string of 10 straight playoff appearances without a win. It’s the sixth time in school history Willowbrook has won an openinground playoff game. The win against Quincy means Willowbrook will come home either Friday or Saturday to face No. 7 seed Glenbrook North (9-1). It’s Willowbrook’s first home playoff game since 1994.
Week 11 Preview Glenbrook North (9-1) at Willowbrook (7-3) What: Second round of the Class 7A state football playoffs When: Friday or Saturday. Check IHSA.org for exact day and time Where: Willowbrook High School, Villa Park Seeds: Glenbrook North is the No. 7 seed in the 32team 7A bracket; Willowbrook is the No. 23 seed Last week: Glenbrook North 17, Chicago Simeon 7; Willowbrook 34, Quincy 13 Outlook: Willowbrook won its first playoff game in 26 years with a thrilling performance in Quincy. The Warriors trailed in the fourth quarter and scored the last 28 points of the game to earn the program’s first home playoff game since 1994. The Warriors’ opponent scored a 10-point win in its playoff opener. Glenbrook North, located in Northbrook, tied for the Central Suburban Conference North Division title at 4-1. The Spartans lone loss came in Week 8 to a 6-3 Vernon Hills team at home (26-25). Of the team’s eight regular-season wins, only four came against teams with winning records (Wheeling at 5-4, Highland Park at 7-2, Deerfield at 5-4 and Vernon Hills at 6-3). It’s other four wins were against teams with records of 2-7, 3-6, 1-8 and 4-5. Glenbrook North has scored 40 or more points in five games. The 17-point playoff output in the first round was its lowest of the season. Up next: The winner of this game faces either No. 15 Glenbard North (8-2) or No. 2 East St. Louis Lincoln (100) in the state quarterfinals next week. If Willowbrook wins this game, it will either travel to Glenbard North (each team has hosted once and Glenbard North would be the higher seed) or host East St. Louis (which has hosted both of its games and Willowbrook will have hosted only once).
The Addison Trail boys soccer team saw its magical season come to a close after a tough 3-1 loss to Conant in the Class 3A Glenbard East sectional-championship game. Addison Trail finished the season 22-2 and advanced to a sectional title game for the first time since 2000. The Blazers’ earlier regional title was their first as well since 2000. The Blazers and Conant played to a 0-0 stalemate until late in the first half when the Cougars went up 1-0.
“They scored in the last minute of the half,” said Addison Trail coach Ryan Dini. “We had a mishap in the back and that led to a breakaway.” Conant quickly made it 2-0 early in the second half. “They scored two minutes into the half. It was a tough couple minutes for us,” said Dini. “We’re down 2-0 and then we got down 3-0 with 30 minutes left. We put a lot of pressure on them in the second half, but we got going way too late.” Enrique Luna scored Addison Trail’s lone goal. It was his 27th of the year. Luna earned all-state honors for his performance this season. Dini pointed out Addison Trail encountered a Conant team firing on all cylinders. “Conant beat Wheaton

What you need to know about atrial fibrillation and stroke (BPT) - Each year, millions of people in the U.S. have an irregular heartbeat, also known as an arrhythmia, according to the American Heart Association. Heart arrhythmias are common and can be harmless. However, certain arrhythmias, such as atrial fibrillation (AFib), may produce pooling and clotting of the blood which can then travel to other parts of the body, damaging the brain, lungs and other organs if not treated appropriately. “Heart arrhythmias are difficult to diagnose and may lead to serious health complications such as stroke,” says Dr. Richard Chang, a cardiologist at John Muir Medical Center in Northern California. “A patient who is experiencing symptoms like palpitations or faintness should see a physician immediately. It is important to remember that prevention is key. Early detection of AFib is important to reduce unnecessary medical visits.” According to a recent presentation at the Heart Rhythm Society’s Annual Scientific Sessions, the longer a person is in AFib, the higher their risk of experiencing a blood clot and subsequent stroke, if not taking blood thinner. To diagnose AFib, a physician will typically conduct a physical examination, including heart-monitoring tests. Traditional methods include an electrocardiogram (ECG) to measure the

timing and duration of each electrical signal of the heart. Holter monitors are portable ECG devices that are generally prescribed for a day or two to record heart activity. However, Holter monitors are restricted in their ability to identify AFib because they are difficult to wear and capture only limited heartbeat information. More advanced technologies, such as continuous cardiac monitors, provide long-term recording and storage of the heart’s electrical activity. This is essential for detecting and documenting potential AFib, which can sometimes occur infrequently and without symptoms. These devices, such as the Zio system by iRhythm, records and stores beat-to-beat heart rhythm data in its entirety, including AFib burden, which can provide a more complete picture to a health care provider. Analysis of the beat-to-beat data allows for a faster, more accurate diagnosis by physicians and treatment for the patient. Additionally, the high diagnostic yield potentially eliminates the need for further testing, leading to reduced health care costs. Visit www.irhythmtech.com today to learn more about the symptoms and risks of AFib and how continuous cardiac monitoring can help improve how heart arrhythmias are diagnosed and managed.

Fenton boys soccer team advances to sectional final By Mike Miazga CORRESPONDENT
The Fenton boys soccer team got itself on a postseason roll. The Bison won a Class 2A regional title with a pair of wins and then won their sectional semifinal match to advance to a Class 2A sectional final. In regional play, Fenton scored a 2-1 win over Wheaton St. Francis in the semifinals. Angel Barriga and Patryk Bryk each had a goal. Fenton then scored a 1-0 win over Marmion on penalty kicks. The two
teams played to a 0-0 draw through two overtime periods. Fenton won the penalty-kick phase by a convincing 4-1 count. Goalie Abel Carrere made two saves during the penalty-kick phrase. “It’s always special to advance in the state tournament,” Fenton coach Jim Johns said late last week. “It’s always a difficult task. Against Marmion both teams tried their best to score. It comes down to that in the state tournament. It becomes more of a defensive game. The games get more difficult. Everybody is hustling and giving it all they have. It’s harder to break teams down in the playoffs. We’re playing better defense and shooting a little better. We’re passing well. We’ve made

overall improvement as a team.” Fenton then scored a 3-0 win over Hampshire in the sectional semifinal. Bryk had two goals, while freshman Sebastian Palacios had the other. Bryk put one in off an assist from Barriga in the first three minutes of the contest.
“When you get that early of a goal you usually are going to be in good shape,” said Johns. “We scored three in the first 30 minutes and then tried to close the game out.” The win over Hamsphire put Fenton at 9-10-3 overall. “We are doing the best we can.
We’re always improving,” the coach said. “The kids are training hard. They’re giving it everything they have. The kids put all their effort into it. (Continued from page 8) We recently celebrated National Hug a Sheep Day and National Bobblehead Day. I’m still shaking my head in disbelief about that one. Upcoming in the next few weeks are Plan your Epitaph Day (otherwise known as National Preparedness Day or Dooms Day.) Coincidentally, National Cappuccino Day and Harvey Wallbanger Day fall within the same 24-hour period, so I guess we’ll have to make a beverage choice. Either that or do a lot of drinking. Have a Bad Day Day is followed by Absurdity Day, which was created as a day to recall and note some of the totally and absolutely absurd things in history, in our country and in our lives. Given the current political climate, that shouldn’t be too difficult. Don’t get me wrong. I love a good celebration. Party like it’s National Carbonated Beverage with Caffeine Day, because it is! I can and will celebrate like its National Square Dance Day or even National Waiting for the Barbarians Day. But I’ll do so in moderation. National Moderation Day – now there’s an Event I could embrace. And I would. If it existed. It doesn’t. At least not yet. Give it time. (National Patience Day will be here in about a week.)
