Deadline looms for Addison Women’s Club scholarship applications ADDISON — The Women’s Club of Addison will be accepting applications now through April 5, 2016, for two $1,500 scholarships for the 2016-2017 academic school year. They will be awarded to female graduating seniors who have been accepted at a four-year college or university. Candidates may attend any high school, but must be a current resident of Addison.

Scholarships will be awarded based on scholastic achievement, school involvement, community service, and financial need. Applications are currently available at the Addison Trail High School guidance department and the Addison Village Hall information desk. Decisions will be made mid-April and the scholarships will be awarded at a special Women’s Club of Addison event.

She also directs the Elmhurst College Chamber Singers, an auditioned select ensemble that performs madrigal and other forms of challenging Renaissance and Classical literature.

The performance by the Elmhurst College Women’s Chorus will feature the premiere performance of a piece that the ensemble commissioned from Michael Engelhardt, a composer and professor at Millikin University. The Women’s Chorus, directed by Donna Peterson Tallman, is an auditioned select group of women from a variety of majors who sing various styles of literature, including Renaissance, classical and 20th century.

began his career in the education field in 1995 as a math teacher at Alan B. Shepard High School in Palos Heights. He then taught math and was the director of math and science at Niles North High School in Skokie and was the director of math and applied technology at Victor J. Andrew High School in Tinley Park. He came to District 88 in 2002 as an Assistant Principal at Addison Trail and then moved to Willowbrook as an Assistant Principal in 2005. When he entered college, Krause planned to major in chemical engineering. But it didn’t take long for him to discover his true passion was helping people fulfill their goals, and he quickly changed his major. He received his undergraduate degree in math from Loyola University Chicago and then continued on to earn his master’s degree in educational leadership from Northeastern Illinois University and a certificate of advanced study in educational leadership from Lewis Univer-

Willowbrook senior takes first in EMT competition VILLA PARK — Willowbrook senior Joseph Egan won first place in the Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) competition at the 2016 HOSA - Future Health Professionals State Conference, which took place from March 9 to 11 in Decatur. Egan competed with Hinsdale Central High School senior Matthew Slonoff, and they are enrolled in the EMT program at Technology Center of DuPage. As the EMT champions, they are now eligible to compete in the HOSA International Leadership Conference, which will

take place from June 22 to 25 in Nashville, Tenn. Following a comprehensive written exam, Egan and Slonoff were given a scenario to address, which was a badly injured motorcycle rider. The two were judged on their ability to respond appropriately, stabilize the scene, remove the helmet, identify life threats, then prioritize and treat the patient. They also were judged on how effectively they communicated with each other and other team members. For more information, visit hosa.org.

Library Board seeks public input at upcoming open house VILLA PARK — On Monday, April 18, the Villa Park Public Library Board of Trustees is hosting two Open Houses, one from 1-3 p.m.; then another from 7-9 p.m. The Library Board, staff, and architects will be on hand to share information about the library facility analysis, space, and service needs at the library. The facility analysis identified major system repairs which must be completed over the next five years. In order to address these needs, as well as the need for additional space

for facilities and parking, the Library Board contracted with Williams Architects of Itasca, to evaluate options for improving or replacing building systems, improving library space, and enhancing services to patrons. Any building project will require a referendum to provide the funding needed, therefore public input is crucial to be part of the decision-making process. Catherine “Kay” Wolf, nee Neary, age 86, formerly of Villa Park, IL. Beloved wife of the late Marvin Wolf. Loving mother of Marvin Jr. (Beverly), Eileen (Phillip) Sanders, Michael (Kathleen), Elizabeth (Mike Barry) Kotwas, Patrick (Kathleen) and Cathleen Nevara; Loving grandmother of Terry (Cheryl), Jamie, Ben, Matt, Ashley (Nic), Dan, Kyle, Tom and Jenna; three great grandchildren Maddie, Henry and Calvin; and her sisters-inlaw Tillie Neary and Elfriede Shane. She was preceded in death by her parents Edward and Catherine Neary, her sisters Genevieve and Eileen, her brothers Thomas, Edward and Charles, and her grandson Nicholas Kotwas. Kay was born in Chicago. After the death of her parents, she lived with her older sister Eileen. They moved to the west suburbs, where Kay attended high school and later went to work at Illinois Bell

Telephone Company. She and Marvin married, living first in Glen Ellyn then moving to northwest Villa Park in 1959. Kay continued to work at Illinois Bell while raising her six children and being active in Schafer School PTA for many years. Kay retired from Illinois Bell in 1988, and later Marvin and Kay moved to Rancho Cucamonga, Calif., where they managed a mobile home park. Kay moved back to Illinois in 2014 and had been living at the Brookdale senior living community in Lisle. Funeral services were held on Wednesday, March 23, 2016, at Steuerle Funeral Home, 350 S. Ardmore Ave, Villa Park. Interment will be at a future date at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery in Elwood, Ill. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society – Breast Cancer or the Villa Park Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2801. Arrangements provided by Steuerle Funeral Home. Willowbrook raises money for the American Cancer Society “Go Pink” event raises $700; Facial Hair February nets $1,300

VILLA PARK — Willowbrook also has hosted other events throughout the school year to raise money for the American Cancer Society, including “Go Pink” events for breast cancer awareness, Facial Hair February and the Brook Olympics. Throughout the month of October, Willowbrook hosted a variety of events in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, including a “Go Pink or Go Home” volleyball game at Addison Trail, where they sold “pink” T-shirts and other “pink” items as well as decorated the halls and the football stadium in pink. Through those efforts, the high school raised about $700. Neil Wahlgren wins Facial Hair February This year, 18 male faculty and staff members participated in Facial Hair February, where they gave up shaving for the month of February to raise money. Participants collected donations from friends, family members, students and colleagues. A bracket was used for students to determine the winner of Facial Hair February. This year’s winner is math teacher Neil Wahlgren. Facial Hair February raised about $1,300. Seniors place first in Brook Olympics competition

The Brook Olympics, a series of events created to bring tradition, pride and a sense of class spirit to Willowwbrook. It culminates with an assembly, where classes go head-to-head in competitions to earn points. Earning the most points were the seniors, this year’s winning class, followed by juniors in 2nd, sophomores in 3rd and freshmen in 4th. The Brook Olympics

Willowbrook took seventh with 21 points. Downers Grove South won the conference title with 189.5 points. At the frosh-soph level, Willowbrook was third with 77 points. Addison Trail was fifth with 38 points. Downers South won the title with 183 points. Josie Zabran won the conference shot put title for Willowbrook at 34-10. Teammate Shantel Powell was second at 34-7 1/2. Willowbrook’s Miani Blackwell won the frosh-soph shot put title at 32-9. Teammate Cecilia Lizasuain was third at 28 7 1/2. ADDISON — The Willowbrook baseball team recently defeated Naperville North 5-0 in non-conference play. Willowbrook scored two runs in the fourth inning and three in the seventh. TJ Geritano went 2-for-4 with two doubles, a run and an RBI. Cam Zunkel was 1-for-4 with an RBI. Matt Pizur went 3-for-3 with a run scored. Kyle Martyniuk went 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI. Kyle Ferguson was 2-for-3 with a double and two RBI. Zunkel was the winning pitcher. He went 6 2/3 innings and struck out eight while allowing only three hits.

In earlier action, the Warriors dropped an 11-5 nonconference game to Glenbard South. Glenbard South jumped out to a 3-1 lead after the first inning and used a seven-run third inning to take a 10-3 lead. Willowbrook had 10 hits in the game. Zunkel went 3-for3 with a double, a run scored and two RBI. Geritano was 1-for-4 with a run scored and a stolen base. Pizur went 1-for-4 with a run scored. Kroll took second in the 55 dash and 200 run, while Klea was fifth in the 200. “Klea is doing a great job of rebounding from a tough sophomore season in addition to being a leader with Lauren and Lynette,” said Pytko. Pytko also has high hopes for the team’s distance runners. “In addition to our talented varsity runners, we have a very young, but very underrated group of distance girls,” he said. “Over the next few years they will grow into a group that can compete with teams in the conference. They are so new at running that they have to learn how to control all the mental aspects of run-

ning a race.” Fenton badminton The Fenton girls badminton team returns the likes of seniors Heena Amin, Angelica Trojan, Hanna Roucka and Kendra Vargas, along with juniors Kelly Kuman, Sheeza Anwar, Rimsha Naseer and Amanda Perry. “We hope to continue to develop our technique in badminton, get in better shape both physically and mentally and be competitive in our matches,” said Fenton coach Brian Hastings. Our performances were the best of the indoor season, so it was not due to lack of work, effort, attitude or competitiveness. We just need more of all of it at the next conference meet. Our guys are in good mental shape and are ready to work toward our outdoor and season goals. Our goal always is to send athletes to the state meet. With our current marks, we will need to keep pushing in order to make it. Come May, anything can happen.” Artman said Martinez, Murphy, Nagle, King and Tribue are poised for strong seasons. “They should do some good things for us on a daily, meet and conference level,” he said.

Addison Trail senior signs to cheer for Robert Morris University Illinois

ADDISON — On March 15, Addison Trail senior Giuseppe Rubino signed to join the Cheer Team at Robert Morris University Illinois in Chicago. Although he has only participated in cheerleading for three years, so he’s thrilled to continue with the sport at the collegiate level. “What I love about cheerleading is you can always challenge yourself,” he said. “There’s always something new to try and learn, and another level you can push yourself to reach.” Giuseppe said he joined cheerleading after being encouraged by his brother, Michael. Giuseppe was named as Captain of the Addison Trail Cheerleading Team this year and helped the group reach new levels of success. The Coed Varsity Team finished in the top five at all invites, winning four of the six invites. During the Illinois Cheerleading Coaches Association (ICCA) Championships, the team won 1st place, earning the title of courtesy photo ICCA Coed Champions. ADDISON — The Addison Trail softball team has impressed coach Mark Olson thus far. “It’s a great group of girls and they have a great work ethic,” he said. “They are very coachable and that’s the best part of the spring so far. We’re a young team, so we’re going to have to get better as we go. We’re definitely not senior-dominated like we were last year or as experienced as we were two years ago. These girls want to get better and that bodes well for the future.” The Blazers, who won 12 games last year and went 4-8 in West Suburban Conference Gold Division action, return seniors Alyssa McMahon (1B)

and Nicolette Napoli (OF) along with junior Jessica Bach (3B). Key newcomers include junior Marie Baumgartner (IF), sophomore Nikki Scorza (IF) and freshman Sophia Hawkins (OF). Addison Trail opened the season with a loss to Montini. “We lost 10-0, but we did a great job picking up the ball in the infield and making the routine plays,” said Olson. “We have some inexperience in the outfield and that’s where we need to get better. We might have some growing pains defensively in the beginning.” Olson is thrilled to have Bach back at third and Baumgartner at shortstop. “I have a lot of confidence in our infield,” said Olson. “Jessica and Marie take care of the right side and Alyssa McMahon can pick up anything at first base.” Napoli, McMahon and

Baumgartner also will contribute as pitchers. “We don’t have a dominant pitcher,” said Olson. “We’ll have to make adjustments defensively and make sure we have people in the right spots. We’ll pitch by committee. Nicolette pitched a handful of innings last year and Alyssa can pitch and Marie will pitch a little. We have another freshman Allie Polhad who will pitch on the JV and will eventually be our pitcher of the future. She’ll get her feet wet a little at the JV level.” Addison Trail was scheduled to face Riverside-Brookfield and Lake Park earlier this week. “We might take our lumps early on and have some growing pains, but their work ethic has been great,” said Olson. “That work ethic and their coachability is going to pay dividends later on. At the beginning here, we’re going to have to be patient.”

You’ve seen the commercials. Three brothers acting rather goofy, doing typical things siblings do like arguing, arm-slugging, and two pitted against the younger one, all in the name of furniture sales. As it turns out, Tim Smithe – with an “E” – has been the brains behind the advertising campaigns that have catapulted Walter E. Smithe to success, now boasting 11 stores in the Chicagoland area. On Thursday, March 24, the Emmy® award-winning ad man, business consultant and international speaker shared his expertise at a luncheon and expo presented by the West Suburban Chamber of Commerce Executives and sponsored by First Trust Financial. Between videos of the many hilarious commercials featuring the Smithe brothers – some with celebrities – Smithe offered his own marketing advice. “If I had one challenge for you, it is to be a little bolder in your marketing and advertising,” Smithe told the over 500 people at the luncheon. “We’re all so safe in business now, sometimes you have to step out and do something unexpected.” He went on to explain the history of Walter E. Smithe, whose tagline is “You dream it, we build it.” “My grandfather owned a tavern where he worked around the clock, literally from 5 a.m. to 12 midnight,” Smithe said. “Once World War II was over, he knew people coming back from the war would want to set

up housekeeping. So he sold the tavern in 1945 and went into the furniture and appliance business.” Turned out Grandpa was right -- after the war ended, there was a huge demand for washing machines, more than the store could keep in stock. “Back then, our tagline was ‘you order it, we build it!’” he quipped. “They actually took orders and people waited for them to come in stock – because everybody wanted one and my grandfather knew it.” Regarding the commercials, Smithe’s next bit of marketing advice was “be the face of the company,” if you can. “I highly recommend being in your own ads and commercials. Because you are part of the brand personality, your face becomes part of your brand. “Because this,” Smithe draws an imaginary circle around his face with his finger, “is something your competitors can’t steal from you. Your face is unique to your brand, so why not make it part of the brand?” Getting celebrities to join in… “It’s amazing what you can do if you just ask,” Smithe said. As an example, he wanted Billy Corgan, lead singer for the Smashing Pumpkins rock group, to be in a commercial. “I happened to know that Corgan had just turned down a $1 million contract to advertise for Budweiser. I thought if he turned down a $1 million contract, there’s no way he’s going to be in our commercial for free!”

It involved the three Smithe brothers (in suits and ties), Billy Corgan, and some pro wrestlers all fighting together in a ring. One wrestler picked up a chair and held it overhead to smash someone, when suddenly Corgan spoke up and said, “Hey! That’s a Walter E. Smithe chair! You can’t smash that!” With that, all the people who were in the ring stopped fighting dead in their tracks, as if to agree – “No, we can’t smash a Walter E. Smithe chair!” Using current happenings, topics… Another marketing tip offered by Smithe was to take advantage of current events in the news or pop culture. For instance, the last time the Olympics came around, the Smithe brothers did a series of commercials in which the older two insisted the younger one try the various sports. An attempt at swimming resulted in a belly flop, while the other two looked on and laughed; skiing found the younger Smithe in a snow bank, leaving only his feet visible; and, finally, curling – the elder two operated the brooms, using the

youngest as the curling rock – the “puck.” While it didn’t end well for the younger brother, it turned out that series of commercials were the third most-recalled commercial during the entire three-week broadcast of the Olympics. Smithe’s recommendation to “ride on other people’s success,” led them to work with the 1985 Bears, Martha Stewart, Jimmy Kimmel, Paula Deen (before she fell from grace), Ralph Lauren, Oprah, even George Clooney and Brad Pitt in an Ocean’s 11 parody. The three Smithes even dressed as cavemen (in suits and ties) as an homage to the commercials which claimed: “Even a caveman could do it.” “You can make a dramatic commercial but you have to put the sales message in there, too. Don’t get so creative that you forget you have a message to get across.” The bottom line is, people would rather be entertained than informed. “Most of us go to our customers and inform, inform, inform,” Smithe said. “If you can inform people by entertaining them, you can still make your point in such a way that people won’t realize they’re being sold to.”
