A Garden Walk in the Garden Village
By Dee Longfellow
FOR THE INDEPENDENT
On Thursday, July 14, Illinois Comptroller Leslie Geissler Munger stated that the backlog of bills for the state will continue to grow through the fall and early winter until it hits the $10 billion mark by New Year’s Day. That many unpaid invoices will cause payment delays of six months or longer to the state’s venLeslie Munger dors and suppliers. Munger’s announcement comes on the heels of the passage of the stopgap budget passed recently. “While the stopgap is a positive step forward, it does not address our larger fiscal challenges,” she said. When we look at the numbers we are facing, the realities are sobering.” She noted that the state is on pace to spend as much as $2.5 billion more than it takes in during the next six months. “Severe cash shortages mean my office will continue to perform triage to help those most in need and protect our most critical services,” she added. Usually payments are handled on a first-in, first-out basis, but Munger said priority would be given to the following:

Cullerton’s initiative to honor Illinois veterans signed into law
Illinois National Guard members will soon be able to receive veterans’ status on Illinois identification cards, thanks to State Senator Tom Cullerton’s initiative that was signed into law last week. Senate Bill 2173 addresses complaints from National Guard members not being classified as veterans since they had not been called to active duty by the President of the United States, Congress or the Governor of Illinois. “We need to honor all sacrifices made by our veterans, especially in Illinois,” Cullerton said. “This is one simple step we can take to work toward giving veterans benefits they deserve.” Cullerton served in the Army from 1990 to 1993 as an infantryman. He draws on his own experiences to improve the lives of people in his district and those throughout Illinois. Senate Bill 2173, which goes into effect immediately, also clarifies that the Illinois Department of Veterans’ Affairs will certify and verify the status of veterans for Illinois identification cards. “Serving our country is one of the most honorable things you can do,” Cullerton said. “And in return, it’s our duty to provide our returning veterans with resources to honor the sacrifices they have made to protect our values.”

During Illinois Speed Awareness Day on Wednesday, July 27, the Villa Park Police Department will be taking a proactive approach to promote safety for motorists, pedestrians, and cyclists through both education and enforcement. In Illinois during 2014, speed was the reason for 32.4% of all traffic fatalities. That’s 348 deaths for the year, or one life every 25 hours. These lives can be easily saved by being aware of our speed and understanding how speeding impacts a crash. In residential areas, speeding can have the following consequences: When a pedestrian is hit by a car traveling 20 mph, there is a 10% likelihood of being killed; at a speed of 30 mph, the percentage increases to a 50% likelihood of being killed. Approximately 16% of the speedrelated fatalities in Illinois were comprised of pedestrians and cyclists. The higher the speed at impact, the more severe the injuries sustained. 37.4% of the speed-related crashes result in injuries. When speeding, there is a greater
chance that other road users will misjudge how fast you are traveling. Speeding extends the distance required to stop a vehicle in emergency situations. 87% of the speed-related fatali-

ties occur on local roadways. Speeding reduces a driver’s ability to navigate safely around curves or objects in the roadway. The Villa Park Police Department urges residents to take a proactive
approach to prevent fatalities and reduce injuries on the roadways by being aware of speed limits and and obeying the signs all the time. For more information, visit illinoisspeedawarenessday.org.

• Nonprofits not covered by court orders or consent decrees that continue to provide services including programs for autism, the homeless, mental health and others. • Business owners who provided good and services to the state in good faith over the last year without receiving payment. • Colleges, universities and MAP Grant students who faced significant cuts and delays this past year. Munger is sticking to her guns regarding compensation for Illinois’ elected officials, treating them like all other payments. Lawmakers and state constitutional office holders – including Miunger – will continue to stand in line for payments with human service providers, small business owners, hospitals, schools and others. “We’re looking at $10 billion in unpaid bills and vendors waiting six months or more to be paid,” she said. “How can I in good conscience tell hospitals, schools, small businesses, nonprofits and others to get in line and then walk politicians to the front? “It remains a matter of fundamental fairness. We are all in this together and we all should wait in line.”

Montini Catholic wraps up 50th anniversary celebration Montini Catholic High School in Lombard concluded their 50th Anniversary school year with a special celebratory event held at Drury Lane on June 4, 2016. The affair honored members from Montini’s faculty, alumni and alumni families for their contributions to the success of the school throughout its five decades of existence. Guests were treated to a commemorative 50th Anniversary ‘history’ book detailing the school’s five decades of existence. Jim Segredo welcomed more than 500 guests who attended the school’s historic event. “This is truly a joyous and significant event,” he said. “Not only do I thank you for your support this evening, but I also thank the thousands of members of our school community, alumni, faculty, staff, parents, friends and benefactors who have supported our school through their generosity and sacrifice of time and treasures over the last fifty years.
Montini Catholic’s President Jim Segredo with Marcella Raymond of WGN News, who served as emcee for the evening. Marcella has a son who attends Montini.
“Over the last 50 years, the campus, technology, academic programs, social events and styles have changed but two things have remained consistent - our mission of education and the good fortune to have dedicated and talented individuals teach, lead and coach our students.” Segredo also credited the De La Salle Christian Brothers and the Diocese of Joliet for their role in the success of the high school. “Together they brought Montini Catholic to the Lombard area in 1966 and their support has never wavered over the last 50 years,” he said. “When the school was faced with significant enrollment chal-
lenges in the early 90s, the Lasallian Brothers and the Diocese of Joliet were there to assist and ensure that Montini Catholic’s mission of education persevered.” Principal Maryann O’Neill, who celebrated her 30th year of service at Montini, and was a recipient of Montini Catholic’s Leadership Award during the evening, also addressed the guests and talked with pride about Montini’s mission of ‘touching hearts.’ “It is that sense of caring, of family that has kept me here these last three decades,” she said. “It is a feeling that permeates the halls. As you walk the building, you meet the faces of our students captured in the
photographs that adorn the walls and see the numerous trophies, both athletic and academic that fill our trophy cases. Just like your home, we display our family pictures and proudly exhibit the awards our students have earned.” The evening’s festivities wrapped up a year-long celebration at the school. Montini Catholic has graduated more than 6,000 students, 99% of whom have gone on to college. Annual enrollment averages 670 students from over 140 private and public grade schools in over 60 cities in the Chicagoland area. All faiths as well as diverse ethnic, cultural and socio-economic backgrounds are

welcomed members of the Montini Catholic family. History of Montini Catholic High School In the early 1960s DuPage County was rapidly growing, and with it, so was the Catholic population. Because of this, the Diocese of Joliet asked the Christian Brothers to construct two schools within its boundaries – Driscoll in Addison and Montini in Lombard. Along with the Diocese, six parishes collaborated to finance Montini in its beginnings with a campaign that was launched on April 1, 1963. These local parishes were Christ the King, Sacred Heart, St. Pius X, St. Alexander, St. John and Visitation. Overall, the Christian Brothers were given $1,000,000 through these campaigns, and were tasked with providing the additional $300,000-400,000 needed to complete the project. On June 21, 1965, Pope Paul VI, whose family name was Giovanni (John) Battista (Baptist) Montini, was elected to the Papacy. In his honor, the De La Salle Christian Brothers named the school Montini Catholic High School. Groundbreaking occurred in 1965 and construction continued through 1966, in order for completion prior to the first day of school in September. In 1966, Montini Catholic opened its doors to 217 freshmen. Montini was formally dedicated by Bishop Romeo Blanchette on May 7, 1967. “This school has been built as a memorial to our present Holy Father, Pope Paul VI, under whose guidance and direction the Second Vatican Council issued the Declariation on Christian Education,” said Bishop Blancette in May of 1967, in a letter

Forest hikes highlight Civilian Conservation Corps history Discover how the CCC turned preserves into places for all to enjoy
Take a stroll through the rich history of the DuPage County forest preserves that were once home to Civilian Conservation Corps camps at “History Happened Here” at Fullersburg Woods from 6-7:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 11. The tour will be led by district historian education outreach specialist Chris Gingrich. Each walk is $3 per person and is open to all ages, but adults should accompany children under 18. Visitors can register online or at 630-933-7248. “Fullersburg Woods housed CCC camps and many of the trails, shelters and other improvements those men built are still used by visitors today,” Gingrich said. “Prior to the CCC most of the preserves had minimal facilities for visitors to enjoy.” On his tour, Gingrich uses historic photos, maps and the natural landscape to tell the story of how the CCC, a product of President Roosevelt’s New Deal, left its mark on the preserves. “Our preserves hold a rich history and the CCC played a large part in making what McDowell and Fullersburg offer today,” said Forest Preserve District of DuPage County President Joe Cantore. “I am excited that the District provides DuPage County residents this opportunity to delve into the rich, colorful history of our preserves,” said Forest Preserve District Commissioner Jeff Redick, District 2.

bia. Different disinfectant method, different time. I usually wash my hands at the kitchen sink, which is another object of my fixation on germ evasion. I read somewhere that the kitchen is typically one of the germiest places in the entire house and the sink is host to hordes of bacteria-laden decaying food particles and other blecky whatnots. As a combatant, I have a spray bottle of rubbing alcohol sitting in a handy location near the kitchen sink. Good riddance, whatnots! Let’s chat about water that comes from a refrigerator door. Anyone besides me avoid it? I’m distrusting of the tubing within the

I also avoid faucet and door handles in public restrooms – and touching anything in public restrooms for that matter. We live in a crazy, germ-filled world. They are everywhere, and it is not possible (not possible at all) to avoid them completely. Still we try. At least I do. And if we ever meet in person, I want you to know I’m okay with a fist bump and even a hug, but maybe not a handshake. stick in ranch dip. I used to love staying overnight at a hotel. It felt special, not having to make your bed in the morning and all. This changed after I watched a couple of those helpful investigative news stories about the horrors of hotel rooms. Items especially suspect and susceptible are the TV remote and phone. Experts advise bringing your own sanitizing cloths and giving a good wipe down before you change the channel or call down to the front desk for more germ-laden pillows. A friend of mine has an aversion toward rental carpet cleaners. She thinks the cleaners aren’t clean. She might be right. But isn’t it possible that a carpet cleaning company could have dirty equipment as well? They deal with some pretty nasty stuff. My best advice would be to clean your carpet cleaner before you clean your carpet. I’m pretty sure there’s an oxymoron in there somewhere. I’ve saved the best (or worst)

fridge that transports the water to my glass. But I use the refrigerator ice cubes, which probably go through the same tubing system, all the time. In addition, I drink regular water from the regular tap every day. And who knows what the innards of that contain? (I don’t even want to go there.) Before we leave the kitchen, anyone else afraid of sponges? They stay damp and contain thousands of little crevices where all sorts of microscopic bad things can grow. I’ve read you can sanitize your sponge in the dishwasher, but I stick with washcloths I can launder in bleach on the hot cycle. Double dipping – now there’s a thing (or two) to get the masses chatting. I’m a single dip proponent. In direct conflict with this is drink sharing. I think nothing of sharing my water bottle with my husband or kids. Same goes for chapstick, which when you consider it logically is probably more likely to harbor germs than a carrot

We live in a culture where people fear shopping cart handles. To be fair, it’s not the handles themselves. It’s the germs residing on said handles. Germs can make us sick. Being sick is a logical thing to fear. So we wipe the handles with disinfectant and go about our merry way. Shopping cart handles may be a quirky fear, but that’s only the beginning. Some people go to great lengths, and employ considerable superstitious behavior in their quest for a germ-free life. Sometimes I’m one of those people. In discussions with others, I’ve found I’m not alone. We all do weird things (or maybe they are smart things) in the name of cleanliness. While I don’t typically disinfect my shopping cart handle, the first thing I do when returning home from the store is wash my hands. I suppose this behavior is loosely related to the shopping cart pho-

The building was planned as a co-institutional facility for 500 boys and 500 girls; however, before opening, the school was changed to co-educational. It contained 19 classrooms, science labs for chemistry, biology and physics, a language lab, music room, and a theater with a capacity of 434. A chapel, library, main gymnasium and locker rooms, administrative offices were also in the plans. The cafeteria was planned for dual purpose of lunch service for the students, as well as a multipurpose room for meetings and social functions. Apart from the main building, two residences were planned for the Brothers and the Adrian Dominican Sisters.

What’s happening at Villa Park Village Hall By Paul DelGuidice FOR THE VILLA PARK INDEPENDENT
• The Villa Park Board of Trustees meeting held at Village Hall on Monday, July 11, 2016 began with discussion in the Committee of the Whole about regulations on the removal of weeds on property in Villa Park. The current ordinance has a list of noxious weeds that are not allowed to be grown in Villa Park. Among those weeds are many types of milkweed that “attract and support butterflies.” The Board voted to remove those types of milkweed from the noxious weed category to promote attracting butterflies. According to Village Manager Rich Keehner, only ‘tropical milkweed’ should remain as a noxious weed as that variety tends to spread and crowd out other native plants.
motion of Trustee Chris Aiello, seconded by Trustee Robert Wagner. The vote was unanimous, and taken after an attorney from the Citizen’s Advocacy Center addressed the Board questioning the transparency of having discussions on this matter on the same day as the first and final vote. • An ordinance amending the municipal code to provide for the regulation of fireworks in the Village was next discussed. According to Village staff, there was no violation section to the Village code concerning fireworks. The current ordinance followed the state statute. The new Ordinance will provide for a municipal violation, so Villa Park can collect any fines directly. According to the Village Attorney, the new ordinance makes it much more efficient and ‘easier’ for the police to arrest and process fireworks violations. Previously, as a state violation, offenders would have to be brought up before the State’s Attorney for formal charges to be filed.
• During the Formal Agenda portion of Monday’s meeting, the Board voted on nine items on the Consent Agenda. The 10th item listed on the printed agenda- the process to challenge water bills and water service termination- had been tabled during the Committee of the Whole. The items passed included: a) The Village Bill Listing dated July 11, 2016 in the amount of $173,844; b) Minutes from the Village Committee of the Whole meeting for June 27, 2016; c) Minutes from the Village Formal Board meeting for June 27, 2016; d) First and Final reading of an Ordinance removing most types of milkweed from the noxious weed category. e) First and Final reading of an Ordinance amending the village code section 9-206 regarding the regulation of fireworks including violations and penalties. f) Tabled. g) A resolution authorizing a let-
ter of intent for the Village to participate in the DuPage Judicial Information System (DUJIS). This is required for Villa Park to participate in the upcoming DuPage County Emergency Telephone System Board (ETSB). The new system will allow participating police and fire departments to exchange information with and between the County’s court and correctional entities. The cost to Villa Park is estimated to be $439,000 for both police and fire. h) A resolution acknowledging receipt of the audit for motor fuel tax funds from the Illinois Department of Transportation. This was required as a condition for the Village to continue receiving its portion of the MFT funds. i) A resolution approving a proposal from Globe Construction, Inc. of Addison for public sidewalk improvements at Ardmore Elementary School and waiving competitive bidding, in the amount of $20,541. j) A resolution authorizing acceptance of a proposal from Arena Fence of Carol Stream for fence
replacement at the Montessori Children’s Academy on the 700 block of E. Park Blvd. and waiving the requirement of competitive bidding in the amount of $21,475.
• The Board then voted 6-1 to pass the second (final) reading of an ordinance to annex the territory at 0S705 Villa Avenue and 0S705 Euclid Avenue. Trustee Bob Taglia was the sole ‘no’ vote on this item. A similar Ordinance was also passed annexing territory at 0S461 Ardmore Avenue. This item passed unanimously.
• The Board ended their Formal Agenda by voting 4 to 3 to approve the Village Manager’s Contract. Trustees Chris Aiello, Al Bulthuis, Nick Cuzzone and Don Kase voted to approve the measure. Trustees Bob Wagner, Bob Taglia and Village President Deborah Bullwinkel voted against approving the contract. Terms of the contract were not immediately available at press time.
• The Board next tabled the vote for an ordinance that would codify the water utility billing dispute resolution and service termination hearing processes in the Village. This item was on the agenda for both discussion and a final vote at Monday’s meeting. The item was tabled at the

(StatePoint) In an age of constant communication and connectivity, it can be difficult to take a break. But drive time is when your phone should take a backseat to safety, say experts. “You don’t need to be texting to be distracted by your phone,” says Kelly Nantel, vice president of communications and advocacy at the National Safety Council. “Even handsfree talking is a major distraction.” Research indicates drivers using handheld and hands-free phones only see about 50 percent of all the information in their driving environment. This phenomenon is known as “inattention blindness,” similar to tunnel vision. While multitasking is valued in today’s culture, researchers find that the human brain doesn’t actually perform two tasks at the same time but rather switches attention between tasks. At your desk, this can be an effective and efficient way to work, but behind the wheel, “multitasking” can be deadly. From checking GPS, to firing up a drive time playlist, there are countless smartphone-related reasons why people take their mind off the road. And newer in-vehicle systems allow drivers to call, text, email, update social media and browse the Internet, despite research showing these systems cause distraction that can linger after the driver finishes the task. One of the major reasons drivers today are so distracted is one of the most surprising -- pressure from your family. Indeed 82 percent of Americans feels their family pressures them the most -- above friends or employers -- to drive distracted, according to a recent NSC survey. “It is a sad irony that the people we love are actually jeopardizing our safety the most,” says Nantel. “If you really care, don’t call to say, ‘I love you,’ instead encourage your family to set everything else aside, disconnect and focus only on the road.” To prioritize safety and reduce your risk of being involved in a crash, turn your commute into “me time,” and your car into a safe sanc- tuary. The National Safety Council is offering some tips to take back your drive. • Turn off your phone when you get in the car. • Tell your family (and anyone else expecting to hear from you) that you will be driving and will call or text them when you are parked at your destination. • Send emails and texts before you start driving. • Return the favor. When friends, family or colleagues are driving, refrain from placing distracting calls or sending texts.

A Garden Walk in the Garden Village By Paul DelGuidice
FOR THE VILLA PARK INDEPENDENT
The Garden Club of Villa Park hosted its annual Garden Walk on Sunday, July 17. This year, ten Garden Club members showed off their beautifully --and lovingly -- landscaped residences. According to Club members, Garden Ornament was the unofficial theme of the Garden Club of Villa Park Annual Garden Walk for 2016. The following gardens were on display: • The Litos Garden on E. Washington in Lombard is spacious and mature garden that has been the source of tranquility for the Litos for years. There are ornamental trees and a few architectural artifacts from the historic DuPage Theatre nestled among perennials. • The Lanners / Hardie Garden in Lombard is a suburban sanctuary that has been in the works for six years. It started as a project to convert an old porch and has continued to grow into a lush, easy-flowing garden nestled into a neighborhood of mature and magnificent oak trees. • The Van Kollenburg Garden on S. Yale in Villa Park has been in the works for more than 10 years, but it was redeveloped after the removal of two large shade trees in the fall of 2015. A mixture of perennials and garden accent pieces clearly demonstrates the owner’s absolute love for plants and a creative way to showcase them • Rich and Stacey’s Creation Garden on S. Princeton in Villa Park was “born” this spring! It is an amazing effort from new homeowners who combine arts and crafts with the love of gardening. A number of homemade crafts as well as a fire hydrant water feature capture the personality of the owners. And Franklin, a Sulcata Tortoise, lives in the backyard with the baseball diamond. • The Kufner / Barrales Garden on S. Summit in Villa Park started as a “clean slate” less than two years ago. After relocating to Villa Park with a handful of plants such as Clematis, Hosta, and a Chinese Maple that was grown from a pot, this garden has blossomed. A highlight of the front garden is a magnificent reproduction of the Frank Lloyd Wright “Spr ite” sculpture. • The Nagel Garden on S. Wisconsin in Villa Park is the result of combined efforts of a mother
and daughter team who work together to create a sanctuary for birds, bees, and butterflies. • The Norwick Garden on W. Plymouth in Villa Park is a picturesque suburban corner lot yard featuring multiple sections of well-planned and maintained plants. It comes complete with a white picket fence and reflective mirrors to add accents. Fairies and gnomes are scattered about adding to the fun. • The Wendorff Garden on N. Myrtle in Villa Park is a “gem,” pleasing and exciting to the eye. The gardening wisdom of the Wendorffs is obvious in this colorful and well laid out garden. Tiered levels, antiques, and artifacts add highlights to this peaceful suburban masterpiece. • The Herrera Garden on S. Bryan St. in Elmhurst features childhood inspiration from Ukrainian Village. A certified National Wildlife Habitat it is an excellent example of what you can do in a small place. • The Bellamy Garden on Meadowood Dr. in Oak Brook uses an around-the-world theme to allow garden walkers to experience areas highlighting the cultures of Japan, Italy, and France.

Edward-Elmhurst Health offers innovative, high-tech options for complex heart cases Bryan Foy, MD, System Medical Director, Cardiac Surgery, Edward-Elmhurst Health and a cardiothoracic surgeon with Cardiac Surgery Associates, was also involved in planning Vaux’s care. He agreed that she was a candidate for surgery and performed a triple bypass on March 23. “Without this intervention, Mrs. Vaux had only a 50 percent chance of surviving a year,” says Dr. Goodwin. “Now her prognosis is good.” PHOTO PROVIDED
Helen Vaux (left), 82, with daughter Joanne Abeling, following triple bypass surgery at Edward Heart Hospital to treat blocked coronary arteries. Following a heart attack in March 2016, Vaux’s previous doctors told her because of insufficient blood flow to an artery, there was nothing they could do except send her home to continue her medication.
“Many high-risk patients with coronary artery disease or chronic total occlusion are not getting the procedures they need. We’re seeing referrals for complex procedures from cardiologists in a 10-state area because they’re recognizing this need. It’s gratifying to think
we can often offer something when a patient has been told there’s nothing that can be done.” To find out if you’re at risk for heart disease, take EdwardElmhurst Health’s free five-minute test at www.eehealth.org/healthydriven/health-aware. 186149
Helen Vaux, 82, suffered a heart attack in March 2016 while at a family wedding reception in Florida. “I started to feel very tired and my chest was making strange noises when I lay down,” recalls Vaux. She was taken to a local hospital where she had a cardiac catheterization, a procedure used to diagnose and sometimes treat heart conditions. Though the test showed significant blockages in three of Vaux’s coronary arteries, doctors told her there was nothing they could do for her beyond sending her home to continue her medication regimen. They said insufficient blood flow to her LAD (left anterior descending) artery – a coronary artery supplying blood to more than half of the heart muscle – ruled out the two most common treatment options: placement of stents to prop open the artery or surgery to allow blood to bypass the diseased area. Vaux’s daughter Joanne Abeling, Director, Clinical Excellence at Edward Hospital in Naperville, was in town for the wedding and stayed throughout her mother’s medical emergency. When she heard the doctors’ recommendation, she decided to arrange transportation for her mother to Edward Heart Hospital, which she knew had the equipment and expertise for complex highrisk interventional procedures. These types of interventions are appropriate for some patients whose severe heart damage or other conditions make stenting problematic. When Mark Goodwin, MD, Medical Director, Cardiology, Edward Heart Hospital and an interventional cardiologist with Midwest Heart-Advocate Medical Group, learned of Vaux’s situation, he was ready to use a state-ofthe art piece of equipment to make stenting possible. Impella, a device which can be inserted through a small hole in the leg, helps the heart pump blood during a procedure. When a patient’s condition is too severe for even the Impella approach, the cardiac team at Edward Heart Hospital is prepared to employ another level of care called ECMO (extracorporeal membrane oxygenation), which involves using a bypass machine to take over for the heart and lungs during stenting. But it turned out neither Impella nor ECMO was needed in Vaux’s case. When Dr. Goodwin performed a cardiac catheterization at Edward, he determined that she did have sufficient blood flow to the LAD to make surgery feasible.
Since her discharge from Edward, Vaux is staying with her daughter in Naperville and shining in her cardiac rehab sessions. “I’m told I’m doing better,” she says. “It’s important to have the right equipment for diagnosis and treatment – from X-ray and laser to the more recent developments, such as Impella,” says Dr. Goodwin. “But it’s also key to have an experienced, specially trained team to determine the best option for each individual.

Driver distractions have joined alcohol and speeding as leading factors in fatal and serious injury crashes. In recent years, thousands of people have died in crashes when drivers used cell phones. The issue has started capturing the attention of political leaders nationwide and some are taking action to improve laws that promote safe driving, though no law goes far enough, say safety experts, because no law prohibits hands-free use. How You Can Give Back You too can turn your summer road trip into an opportunity to do good. Whether the great outdoors is your ultimate destination, or you’re
passing parks on your route to another adventure, consider taking some time for a park clean-up. Hit the trail in a national, state or local park. Bring along some gloves and plastic bags. As you enjoy your hike, stop and pick up litter -- which is not only an eyesore, but a hazard to wildlife and the ecosystem. You can time your visit with a scheduled volunteer opportunity or just do it yourself. Walking tours are one way to explore a destination. A perhaps more valuable way is to engage with its residents meaningfully. At your destination, consider volunteering with Feeding America or with a local food pantry. The mark of a great summer vacation can come in many forms. Consider a different kind of summer road trip this year.
Despite recent flood damage in Northern Wisconsin, tourism is open for business. Clean up and repair is an ongoing process, and the Department of Tourism and local tourism businesses encourage visitors not to cancel their vacation plans. Travelers should be prepared for

Addison Trail summer baseball team wraps up Blazers show improvements from beginning to end By Mike Miazga CORRESPONDENT
The Addison Trail summer baseball team’s season came to a recent conclusion in the Phil Lawler Summer Classic state tournament. The Blazers dropped a 7-0 decision to District 88 neighbor Willowbrook in the Fenwick regional. “It’s not that we played bad, but
they just hit the ball,” said Addison Trail coach Mike Kennedy. “We put the ball in play as well, but they ended up getting three double plays. Every time we had a shot to get back into the game, they made a big play.” Vince Daudelin led the Blazers with a double and a single. “Vince came up big for us,” said Kennedy. Overall, Kennedy was pleased with what he saw unfold this summer. “We got accomplished what we wanted to,” he said. “Now in the offseason here, the kids will work on getting faster and stronger and putting in the work in those areas. We are going in the right direction. We are getting there and we are building to a point where we’re starting
Taft named new Fenton boys basketball coach School alum most recently was head coach at Waubonsie Valley By Mike Miazga CORRESPONDENT
One of Fenton High School’s own has come home. Chaz Taft, a 1996 graduate of Fenton, is the school’s new head boys basketball coach. He replaces Josh Payton. “I thought it would be a good opportunity to come home and give back to the community,” said Taft. “My parents still live in Bensenville.” Taft, who played for Greg Lehmann at Fenton and went on to play at North Park University, comes back to the school with plenty of highschool coaching experience. Taft was the head girls coach at Notre Dame High School in Niles for four years. He then went on to be a boys’ assistant for a year at Chicago St. Patrick. Taft was the head boys’ coach at South Elgin High School for eight years and most recently was the head boys’ coach at Waubonsie Valley in Aurora for three years. Taft is still a physical education teacher at Waubonsie Valley. Taft said his coaching style will
stress defensive play. “We’ll be all man-to-man defense and we’ll run a motion offense,” he said. “Our bread and butter will be our man-to-man defense. The man-to-man is new to everybody. It will be a process with the offense we run and taking good shots and playing defensively the way we want. We have the talent to play that way.” Taft added his players have responded well to the coaching switch and the new style of play. “They have to trust in me being the new coach with new defensive and offensive systems,” he said. “It’s going to be new how we approach things. Everything is valued from the way you walk on the court to the way you walk off the court and shake hands with everybody. People used to think when they played Fenton it would be a joke and they could run through us. In the summer already we’ve received a lot of complements about how hard we play. Our guys are getting after it and I’m proud of how they have embraced everything already.” To say the least, Taft is looking forward to the future of Fenton boys basketball. “I’m up for the challenge,” he said. “I grew up in town here and I brought my South Elgin teams back here for the Thanksgiving tournament. Now I get to be the basketball coach in that gym. It’s neat to come back home and see some familiar faces and be in the gym. It’s all very exciting.”
to say, ‘Hey, it’s time to turn the corner.’” Kennedy had plenty of opportunities this summer for talent evaluation. “The summer more so gives us the opportunity to see some of the younger guys coming up and seeing them get a chance to play and compete against varsity guys playing varsity ball,” he said. “Next year we’ll be aware of what we need to do to be competitive at the varsity level.” Kennedy also benefitted from a
good number of players on the team who competed this summer for traveling teams in the area. Kennedy noted Addison Trail was represented on such travel teams as the Elmhurst Cougars, Schaumburg Seminoles and the DuPage Training Academy. “Most of our pitchers are out there competing with their travel teams,” he said. “We have players all over getting their work in. That’s a good thing. Some of these guys are coming back to us during the week after having played six or seven games
the previous weekend. They are getting their work in.” Kennedy stressed to his team to enjoy the remainder of the summer. “I told the guys to put the ball down for a little bit,” he said. “When the fall hits, you hit the weights or you go play football or another fall sport. But right now, take a break and come back with a refreshed mind and an even bigger love for the game. Our guys will come back ready to go and I think we are capable of doing some exciting things next season.”
Del Real named new Willowbrook girls soccer coach Veteran coach directed freshman team for 10 years By Mike Miazga CORRESPONDENT
The Willowbrook girls soccer program didn’t have to look far for its new head coach. Longtime freshman coach Julio Del Real is the team’s new head varsity coach. He replaces Victor Marquez. Del Real was the program’s freshman coach for the previous 10 years. Prior to that, Del Real was the head varsity coach at West Chicago High School. Del Real is a dean of students at Willowbrook. “I’ve been coaching with Victor for 10 years and think the world of him,” said Del Real. “When he stepped down I wanted to give it another opportunity and see how it felt to be in charge one more time. Willowbrook is very dear to me. I look at the girls and the relationships I’ve built and hopefully we will continue with the success Victor left behind.
I’m thankful for the chance.” Del Real said the program has excelled in recent times because of both the player and coach components. “Besides the coaching of Victor and Pete Montgomery, one of the biggest things that has helped with the turnaround is we’re starting to get girls coming into the program with a lot more experience,” he said. “They are playing club soccer. The level of experience they are coming to high school with now is very important. We only have them for three months. Having girls coming in with experience gives us more opportunities to concentrate on strategy that will help make the girls better and give them even more opportunities to succeed in girls soccer.” Del Real said his coaching style focuses in on the personnel on the roster. “I adapt,” he said. “I’ll take a look at the personnel we have and make the most of it. I’m not set on a certain strategy. We’ll do our best with the 18-20 girls on the team. If we have to be a defensive team, I’m very happy to do that. If we have to be an attacking team, we can do that as well. We will adapt our strategy to the girls on the team. And having coach Montgomery with me will
make it that much better in terms of the opportunities for the girls to succeed.” Del Real likes the direction the program is headed. “We have a lot of potential,” she said. “We have some good girls coming back. We did lose some tremendous experience. And besides that experience, we lost quality individuals. What they brought to the team will be missed. Hopefully with the experienced players we have coming back and the younger players, we can continue with our recent success.” Willowbrook recently completed its summer camp. “We did an impromptu two week camp with about 16-18 girls,” said Del Real. “They look very promising. We had some varsity girls there and other girls who were incoming ninth graders. They really surprised me in a good way. If you look at the situation, I didn’t have to teach kicking or dribbling the ball. They came in with those skills. I told coach Montgomery and coach (Brian) Shanahan how excited I was with what I saw in camp. We were able to work on strategy and we saw a lot of great things. I’m excited to be able to call myself the head coach of this program.”
IC Catholic Prep baseball team ramps up summer schedule By Mike Miazga CORRESPONDENT
One of the first things new IC Catholic Prep baseball coach Frank DeAngelis did was ramp up the team’s summer schedule. This year, the Knights played seven games and went 3-4 overall. “In the past we didn’t schedule many games,” he said. “We got seven in this summer and we had to cancel a game. We had 15 guys, which was pretty good. A lot of young guys got
at-bats and a lot of guys on varsity who didn’t get a lot of at-bats last season saw different positional play and got their swings in. And guys were able to pitch more and log some more innings this summer.” DeAngelis was pleased with his player’s commitment to the sport this summer. “We have guys who also play on travel teams in the summer,” he said. “That’s a big positive. Guys threw for us in the middle of the week for an inning or two. That’s
productive work. We’re not concerned about wins in the summer. We want to get the reps in and get the guys around each other. We’re working toward next year.” DeAngelis cited strong play from the likes of Joey Salvi (P-1B), John Hoffman, Michael Liszka, Griffen Eichhorn and Brendan Russ. “Joey is a lefty who played at the varsity level last year. He had

lineup. I’m very pleased with the versatility we have on the team.” DeAngelis said he’s working on increasing the number of games the team will play next summer and said the Knights will be eligible to play in the state summer tournament (need a minimum of 10 games to do so). The coach added the team is looking into taking a trip to Carthage College in Kenosha, Wis., for a team camp next year. “We were very solidified and goal-oriented this summer. We used our contact days wisely,” he said. “Some of our kids play two and three sports and were going to team camps. They have a lot going on. I was very pleased with the kids and what we accomplished this summer. Moving forward, I will keep in communication with the other coaches at the school in terms of scheduling. My goal is to put together a more solidified and more rigorous baseball program in the summer here.” DeAngelis also is in the process of restructuring the program’s youth camps that are offered.
