Jesse White to retire after fifth term ILLINOIS NET NETWORK — After five terms as Illinois secretary of state, Jesse White announced at the Illinois State Fair on Thursday, August 20, that he will retire from public office when his current term ends, he told visitors at the Illinois State Fair on Thursday, August 20. The Chicago Democrat, a former Cook County Recorder of Deeds and state legislator, said his decision to not seek re-election in 2018 is final. “Take it to the bank,” said White, who has previously discussed retirement. “This is it.” The 81-year-old Alton native said he’d surely be on the job for the remainder of this term, though. “Oh, sure, I’ll be there every day, at my duty station and discharging my duties to the best of my abilities,” White told reporters at the Illinois State Fair. A former Army paratrooper, White also played minor league baseball and spent three decades in the Chicago public school system as a teacher and administrator. In 1959, he founded the acclaimed Jesse White Tumbling Team for children in the

Chicago area. Governor signs bill for federal funding Gov. Bruce Rauner on Thursday, August 20, signed a bill to access about $5.4 billion in federal funding for Illinois programs that would have been otherwise tied up because of the lack of a state budget. The measure, Senate Bill 2042, “will help those in need without adding to the state’s budget deficit,” Rauner spokesman Lance Trover said in a news release. The bill “allows the state to provide some services to the state’s most vulnerable citizens,” he added. The bill also authorizes the state to pay $166 million from its own funds toward debt service for Chicago’s Metropolitan Pier & Exposition Authority. House Democrats last week attempted to add another $585 million in state general fund spending, but they backed off that effort when it appeared they were lacking votes. The bill passed the House by a 98 to 0 vote. The Senate on Wednesday night sent it to the governor on a vote of 52 to 0. Tom Cullerton stands up for DuPage Water Commission Ending appointed jobs, government consolidation lessens burden on taxpayers SPRINGFIELD — State Senator Tom Cullerton (D-Villa Park) recently supported legislation, that allows the DuPage County Board to dissolve many appointed positions to provide taxpayers with a smaller and more efficient local government. The measure is projected to save DuPage County taxpayers more than $100 million over the next 20 years. To further protect area residents, Cullerton advanced a measure to protect the DuPage County Water Commission out of the Senate last week. “DuPage County has been a leader in government consolidation by creating a model for other communities to embrace to save Illinois taxpayer dollars,” he said. “This legislation ensures DuPage County

Governor Rauner’s administration recognizes the commission’s authority to maintain representation is necessary to ensure local boards have the tools to effectively serve area residents. SB 381 passed the Senate with bipartisan support and now moves to the House for consideration.

OAK BROOK — Work has begun to restore the rear courtyard and breakfast porch area at the Forest Preserve District of DuPage County’s historic Mayslake Hall at Mayslake Peabody Estate in Oak Brook. The project will restore the exterior brickwork to a recessed, or “raked,” mortarjoint finish; replace 21 secondstory windows; repair the chimney, stucco, copper scuppers and downspouts; and replace barge boards. Work began in early August and should finish by the end of October. The restoration will enhance visitors’ experiences during onsite activities, programs and events and expand indoor and outdoor special event space. “Mayslake is a beloved cultural and historical gem in DuPage County,” said Forest Preserve District Commissioner Jeff Redick, District. 2. “A restored and improved Mayslake will be an important tool in introducing people to nature through the arts.” The Board of Commissioners approved hiring Renaissance Restoration Inc. of Galena to do the work for $634,614. The Mayslake Hall Restoration Society raised more than $100,000 for the project, and the Friends of the Forest Preserve District of DuPage County raised $11,390. The remainder will be funded through District bond funds and planning, construction and development funds. “We are very grateful for the support of so many individuals who are helping us restore this important part of DuPage County’s history,” said Forest Preserve President Joe Cantore. In 1919 Francis Stuyvesant Peabody commissioned renowned Chicago architect Benjamin H. Marshall to design the Tudor Revival-style mansion known today as Mayslake Hall. After his death in 1922, Peabody’s family sold the estate to the Franciscan Order of the Friars Minor, Province of the Sacred Heart and the hall became a retreat house. Over time, the order sold off sections of the estate, eventually selling the last remaining acres, including Mayslake Hall, a friary and the Portiuncula Chapel, to the Forest Preserve District in 1993 after voters approved the purchase by referendum.

Narcan program awaits governor’s signature Offers one potential solution to heroin epidemic SPRINGFIELD — DuPage County’s Narcan® program has trained more than 2,200 police officers to administer naloxone, saving more than 66 individuals from overdosing on heroin. As the growing heroin epidemic spreads throughout the state and nation, the legislature still awaits the governor’s

signature on House Bill 1, an initiative to continue the program’s success with battling the drug not only in DuPage County but also in communities across Illinois. According to State Senator Tom Cullerton (D-Villa Park), House Bill 1 is a comprehensive package designed to address heroin and opioid abuse and addiction in Illinois. The legislation addresses heroin abuse on a variety of different levels. Three major points of the initiative include the following: • First, the legislation, mod-

eled from DuPage County’s efforts, creates a program for state and local police officers, fire protection personnel, firefighters and school nurses, to be trained in administering Narcan. Narcan reverses the effects of an overdose for heroin, cocaine, Vicodin, OxyContin and Morphine. The drug can be administered either by injection or nasal spray. • Secondly, the initiative requires Medicaid to cover costs for addiction treatments and prescriptions. Currently, the second most common reason for Illinoisans to seek treat-

ment is heroin, yet the state has the lowest rate of state-funded treatment compared to other Midwestern states, such as Indiana, Iowa and Wisconsin. Expanding the scope of Medicaid to include some of these expenses will make treatment more readily available and bring Illinois up to speed with neighboring states. • Thirdly, requires the Illinois Department of Human Services and State Board of Education to develop a threeyear heroin and opioid drug prevention program to address the heroin stronghold in Illi-

nois. School districts will be given the option to adopt the program and DHS will work with the school districts to reimburse the costs. Cullerton asserts legislators from both sides of the aisle worked on the legislation because everyone recognizes drug overdoses and addiction can happen to people regardless of their age, socioeconomic background or ethnicity. “This measure is a great example of legislators working together in a bipartisan effort to address this problem and work to save lives,” he said.

Fenton girls volleyball team showing promise Bison return multiple key contributors, including 2014 team MVP Burris By Mike Miazga Correspondent

The Fenton girls volleyball team has no shortage of experience this season. The Bison return a number of key contributors from a squad that won 10 matches last season. That group of returners includes senior all-conference recipient and team MVP Emmy Burris. “Emmy is a fantastic hitter and server,” said Fenton coach Kelly Kleidorfer. “She is the backbone of the offense and a

}We can be very good offensively if our serve receive continues to improve.” — Kelly Kleidorfer Fenton coach team captain.” Also back is junior setter Paulina Milanowski (another team captain). She started as a sophomore. “Paulina is working on jump setting this year and is a leader on and off the court,” said Kleidorfer.

Junior Natalia Skop is in her second season on the varsity and has switched from setter to outside hitter for the 2015 season. “Natalia is doing fantastic,” said Kleidorfer. Senior Jessica Bango (a team captain) also made a position switch to the right side this season. “Jessica is a natural leader,” said Kleidorfer. Junior Maggie Rusiecka is in her second year on varsity as a middle hitter. “Maggie worked hard to master her jump serve in the offseason,” the coach said. Newcomers to the team include junior middle hitter Melinda Boehm and freshman setter Mackenzie Miller. “Melinda is a great blocker and provides height we haven’t had in the past,” said Kleidorfer. “Mackenzie has great potential

and great natural setting ability. She’s working hard to get into the lineup this season.” Kleidorfer said offense will be a big strength of her group this season. “Our setting and hitting are strengths,” she said. “For the first time in a long time we have players that can hit at all three front-row positions. We have girls at all three front-row positions that we trust to put the ball away for us. At setter we feel we are in a very good position, Paulina is as good as most of the setters we see and she has been doing a tremendous job mentoring Mackenzie, our freshman setter that we moved up with us.” Serve receive has been a big point of emphasis in practice. “We are working every day at improving our serve receive,” said Kleidorfer. “We know it

has been a huge weakness of ours, but we are improving a little at a time. We can be very good offensively if our serve receive continues to improve.” Kleidorfer said three players have been competing for the libero position. “We are confident that whoever wins the position will get the job done,” she said. Fenton is part of the largerschool Metro Suburban Conference West Division. “We are looking to win our first conference match since the MSC expanded before last season,” said Kleidforfer. “We also are aiming to win at least one tournament and finish in the top half of the other three. We have had double-digit victories the past three seasons and are really aiming for the .500 mark this season.”

Youthful Fenton football team looking to gain experience Bison optimistic about progress being made heading into Week 1 By Mike Miazga Correspondent

Fenton graduated 22 seniors from last year’s team. In high school football terms, that means a youth movement is at the forefront. But despite a young roster, Bison coach Mark Kos has high hopes for his 2015 group. “We graduated a lot of seniors,” he said. “We are going to be a young squad and we realize that as coaches. The kids are out there holding themselves accountable and pushing each other and making sure every player gives his best effort. You can’t coach that. That’s a great thing and we as coaches compliment the kids for that.” On offense, Fenton returns 2014 starters in Eric Lonegran (6-0, 215, Sr., running back), Adrian Bahena (5-11, 250, Sr., offensive line) and Corey Hausen (6-5, 290, Sr.,

quarterback). Hausen played wide receiver for the team last year. Juniors Oliver Acquire (5-11, 175, Jr., tight end), Josh Jakalski (6-3, 240, Sr., offensive line) and Greg Cazares (5-7, 155, Sr., running back) also will be relied upon on offense. “I like the balance we have on offense and what we’ve shown so far,” said Kos. “The past few years we’ve been a predominantly run first team. We can still do that, but now Corey is playing quarterback. He played there freshman and sophomore year. He has embraced the role once again and he will be part of a very well-balanced attack that we think will play well for us this season.” Lonegran is the team’s lone returning starter on defense at middle linebacker. Kos said Jakalski will contribute on the defensive line, while Acquire will help at linebacker as will Ivan Rodriguez at nose tackle. Bahena also will see time on defense, as will sophomore outside linebackers Dylan Butts (6-0, 175) and Brian Jaramillo (5-10, 163). Nick Mercado (5-7, 140, Jr.) will be an asset

in the secondary. “Oliver and Ivan played up various times for us as sophomores,” Kos said. “Dylan and Brian as sophomores truly earned their varsity positions. They are young, but we are excited about what they can bring to the program. We have good athleticism on defense. I also like the way we communicate with each other and how we fly to the ball. We’re very aggressive. If they make a mistake, their speed and athleticism is going to help make up for most of those mistakes. We have a very active defense. We’ve had bigger kids in the past, but that athleticism and the ability to move has been a nice thing to see.” Fenton is part of the competitive Metro Suburban Conference West Division. “We went 0-5 in conference last year. We know we have nowhere to go but up,” said Kos. “We’re not fooling ourselves with this schedule we play. We perceive it as we have playoff preparations every week. We play Leyden in Week 1 and then Ridgewood and Elmwood Park who we are familiar with from the old Metro Suburban days and then

Walther Christian. If you find a break in the schedule, let me know. We have to prepare well for these teams.” Kos feels his team will have a different look as the season wears on. “We have to get that game experience under our belt,” he said. “It’s a great group of kids here who contribute and hold each other accountable. I really believe in this group. I’m excited and our kids are excited to see what the season holds. We know we’re not coming back with 22 seniors. We’re coming back with 22-plus juniors. But

we have great senior leaders who lead by example and the juniors realize there is a difference between sophomore and varsity football.” Fenton opens the season at home Friday against Leyden. “Leyden’s an 8A school,” said Kos. “I got my start with (current Leyden coach) Tom Cerasani Jr.’s dad over at Schaumburg. We have a lot of respect for their coaching staff and vice versa. That respect goes both ways. They run a quality program over there and we look forward to playing them.”

Week 1 Preview Leyden at Fenton When: Friday, 7:15 p.m. Where: Fenton High School, Bensenville Last year: Teams did not play Outlook: Fenton switched things up on its schedule this season and will open with West Suburban Conference Gold Division entrant Leyden. The Eagles, whose enrollment more than doubles Fenton’s, went 2-7 last season with wins over Morton and Proviso East. Fenton coach Mark Kos coached with current Leyden coach Tom Cerasani Jr.’s dad at Schaumburg High School. Fenton graduated 22 seniors from last year’s squad but does return several key players including two-way standout Eric Lonegran and new quarterback Corey Hausen, who played wide receiver last year.

Morris shoots 79 in debut for Addison Trail boys golf team Blazers girls golf team looking to take the next step By Mike Miazga Correspondent

Addison Trail freshman Blaise Morris started his high school golf career off in impressive fashion. Morris shot a 79 in his first high school tournament. “If he continues to work

hard all year he will be a kid to keep an eye on because he is going to become a great golfer,” said Addison Trail boys golf coach Eric Norberg. Norberg noted Addison Trail graduated six seniors from last year’s team. “And all of them were above average golfers,” he said. “We are going to need last year’s juniors and sophomores to step up their games.” Leading the list of returners this season is senior Santino Bilotta. “Golf is a game where you 216301

BONE MEDICATIONS’ EFFECT ON TREATMENT

Postmenopausal women, in particular, are at risk for the bone-thinning disease called “osteoporosis,” for which theby medications known “bisphosphoJeffrey T. asBoland nates” are often prescribed. These drugs, Licensed Orthodontic Specialist which include alendronate (Fosamax), ibandronate (Boniva), and others, work by slowing or stopping the natural processes by which bone tissue dissolves, thereby helping to preserve bone density and strength. By the same token, orthodontic treatment often relies on the natural process of bone resorption and formation (called “bone remodeling”) to move teeth through their bony foundations in the jaws. Because bisphosphonates may interfere with this process, prospective and current patients should be sure to tell their orthodontist if they are taking them. Successful orthodontic treatment requires optimal bone healing to prevent excessive tooth mobility.

To schedule a free orthodontic consultation, please call our office. We recognize that adults and children have different needs and require a different level of care. Whether you’re an adult, adolescent or child, our knowledgeable doctor and staff will work with you to ensure that you receive the most appropriate treatments, and that your needs are met with understanding, respect, and full commitment from us. With over 30 years combined experience, our doctors are dedicated to providing you with the highest quality of orthodontic care. Our office hours are by appointment. The Warriors lost senior Amanda DiNella to graduation. DiNella was a four-time sectional qualifier. “It’s a rebuilding year,” said longtime coach Jim White. “We have a very young team with no seniors and very limited experience at the varsity level. Turn off highway 42 onto Garrett Bay Rd. in Ellison Bay to discover truly unique pottery created in a restored apple barn, which houses a ceramics studio, an art gallery and the artist’s home. Door County potters John Dietrich and Diane McNeil create their ‘Art for Everyday’ with you in mind. ‘Pottery is personal and our mission is to make pottery that people will use every day. Art improves your life and that’s what our art does.” John’s been throwing at the potter’s wheel for 49 years and he thinks he’s getting better every day. The beauty of the Niagara Escarpent, a unique feature of Door County, the forests, fields of wild flowers and the water inspires John and Diane every day. The functional stoneware ceramics made in their studio is food safe and easy to use. The surface design is applied with a painterly brush, full of life and movement. Since John’s designs are more abstract people bring their own experience to interpret the meaning of the piece, making it even more personal. Each piece of ceramic art is one of a kind work of art, which makes finding the perfect bowl or dish an interesting and exciting treasure hunt.

Increased funding needed for national parks improvements, say experts

(STATEPOINT) — Local roads, bridges, and other transit are integral parts of the national park experience. However, parks and their transportation infrastructure are facing a mounting financial challenge, say experts. Under the current law, the National Park Service is guaranteed $240 million per year for transportation projects through the Federal Highway Trust Fund, which advocates say is only one quarter of the amount needed annually to guarantee safe access to national parks. “With national park visits at an all-time high, more park funding, not less, is what’s needed to address the $6 billion worth of overdue and delayed transportation projects on the table,” says Laura Loomis, National Parks Conservation Association’s deputy vice president of government affairs. The National Park Service manages 1,500 bridges and about 10,000 miles of roads nationwide, including rural national park drives and major urban thoroughfares. From corroding support beams on park bridges to outmoded roads that create dangerous drop-offs, unfunded projects can pose a safety hazard to motorists, cyclists, hikers, park staff, emergency responders and wildlife. “Not only should Congress ensure national parks are safe, but investing in them spurs economic growth and supports jobs,” says Loomis. “The 100th anniversary of the National Park System in 2016 is a historic opportunity for Congress to ensure our national parks have the resources they need to thrive.” Information about transportation needs and funding opportunities in national parks can be found by visiting www. npca.org. ‘Interesting Man’ makes for Most Interesting commercials

O

n occasion this space has been used to lament about commercials that are either stupid, sappy or just plain god-awful. Yet others are thoroughly enjoyable. One is a recent radio spot by Fifth Third Bank in which a commencement speaker gives a crop of new college grads the lowdown (tongue in cheek) on what to expect when they enter the real world. The speaker states, “And despite doing everything right, you have to move back home … and share a bathroom with your younger sister.” The graduates and their families sit in stunned silence, save for the younger sister, who breaks the silence by mumbling in a sassy voice, “Hey! ...” The All-State commercials that feature “Mayhem,” who urges you to purchase All-State insurance to “be better protected from Mayhem … like me” also are clever. But the advertising campaign that’s captured my attention over the past few years, by far, is that which promotes Dos Equis beer, using the fictitious front man dubbed “The Most Interesting Man in the World.” Played by bearded 77-yearold actor Jonathan Goldsmith, “The Most Interesting Man in the World” can be seen on Dos Equis TV spots performing outof-the-ordinary “feats” such as rescuing a large bear from a bear trap, bench-pressing two young women at a casino, catching a large swordfish and smoking a cigar while riding a roller coaster. His signature line—delivered towards the end of each commercial while sitting between two lovely ladies who appear to be more than half his age—is, “I don’t always drink beer, but when I do, I prefer Dos Equis. … Stay thirsty, my friends.” “Most Interesting Man” promos also are on either the AM

or FM dial, but whether seen or heard, they’re hilarious and brilliant. I literally stop whatever I’m doing whenever I’m within earshot of a “Most Interesting Man” commercial, even if I’ve heard it a number of times. The radio plugs are particularly well-done. Here are a few of my favorite lines from those spots: • He has never lost a sock. • If he were to mispronounce your name, you would feel compelled to change it. • His organ donor card also lists his beard. • He lives vicariously through himself. • Therapists open up to him. • He once had an awkward moment just to see how it feels. • He’s a lover, not a fighter, but he’s also a fighter, so don’t get any ideas. • He has won the lifetime achievement award twice. • If he were to pat you on the back, you would list it on your resume. The Most Interesting Man in the World, however, is a man for all seasons. Commercials are produced for specific holiday celebrations such as Halloween, Cinco de Mayo and Christmastime. Here are some of the lines from each: Halloween • He once went to a psychic … to warn her. • When the zombies come, he will be waiting. • If he were to shout at the screen during a horror film, she would never open that door. • His séances are the talk of the afterlife. • The hairs on the back of his neck have never stood up. Cinco de Mayo • His Pinatas fight back. • He has three little black books for women named Juanita. • The Aztec calendar has his Cinco de Mayo party chiseled in. • The contents of his tacos refuse to fall from their shells. • The front of his house looks like it was built by the Mayans … because it was. Holidays: • Regardless of the temperature, you can never see his breath. • He has never relied on mistletoe. • He is the reason those nine ladies are dancing. • You should never shake his gifts … just trust me on this one. • Santa leaves HIM milk and cookies. (Thought that one up myself!)

Editor $70,000 in payments to former Iowa State Senator Kent Sorenson in exchange for his endorsement of Ron Paul over Michele Bachmann. Suspicion arose about Sorenson’s sudden switch, begging the question of whether or not he was compensated for “changing his mind.” Of course, the Paul camp insists this is all a government conspiracy led by whom they call “Villain In Chief” Barack Obama. We’ll see. And one Trumps them all… To Donald Trump: “Gee, can you hear me all the way back there in the 1950s?” Trump has accused Megyn Kelly of Fox News of “giving him all the tough questions” and low-balling it for others. (Let’s not even mention his assumptions about her menstrual cycle.) Here are some

Springfield with which we now live. It happened when Minnesotans elected former AllStar wrestler Jesse “The Body” Ventura as their governor. (I received a gift -- a t-shirt saying “Our governor can beat up your governor.” Luckily for Minnesota, it was not in the dire financial straits Illinois finds itself. Jesse had some new ideas, but he couldn’t move anything forward because he had no friends on either side of the aisle. We

may be in the same boat with our new Governor as he battles a House Speaker who refuses to budge or to compromise and who virtually cannot lose an election. Ventura once said if he were reincarnated, he’s like to come back as a 44DD bra. Let’s hope Rauner has a little more class than that. NOTE: In case you haven’t heard, I have a new e-mail address. It is: Independent@ rvpublishing.com.

The Don of A New Day in Sports As you may or may not know the “Don” is the head of an Italian family. A few years ago I was televising a celebrity basketball game at Addison Trail High School. After the game I was introduced to Mike North of the Score. At the time we shook hands and he said wow “Don”, is that your name or your title? I laughed and thought what a great name for my TV and Radio show, thus I have been the “Don of Sports” ever since. At that same game I interviewed Otis Wilson of the 1985 Champion Chicago Bears, now Otis is about 6-foot-5 and I am 5-foot-5. I was taught never give up your microphone when you are interviewing someone. Well, Otis grabs the microphone away and starts to interview ME! I reached DON up and grabbed the microphone back and said, FIGARELLI “No, Otis, I am the interviewer!” He laughed and told me how great it was to be on a team with such great characters as Jim “Funky QB” McMahon and “Sweetness” Walter Payton. Want a Bears T-shirt? Call me at 630-530-7061 and tell me who was the middle linebacker on the 1985 Super Bowl Champion Chicago Bears. I might pick your name.

suggested questions Kelly might ask Donald next time: 1. Do you prefer your vegetables in a butter sauce or a cheese sauce? 2. Do you prefer to read fiction or non-fiction and why? 3. If a baseball player hits a home run but as he heads around the bases, he drops over dead, does the run still count? Are those easy enough for you, Donald? You might as well answer those, since it is doubtful anyone is taking you seriously in the first place. Of course, he should get along fine is places like Iran, Iraq and Turkey, where they have the same misogynistic view of the world. One thing gives Donald an edge and, if you don’t believe it, look at Bruce Rauner in Illinois. The nation is sick to death of partisan politics. Here in Illinois, Rauner ran against three outstanding candidates in the Primary. (Well, two – okay, one!) When he declared victory, it was clear what the voters were really saying – get rid of partisan politics – be they Republican OR Democrat – and please get some things done. And protect our tax dollars while you’re at it. Hence, the stalemate in

he U.S. Inspector General is reportedly investigating Huma Abedin, Hillary Clinton’s top aide, claiming Abedin used her State Department job to the advantage of her two other employers at the time: a consulting firm and the Clinton Foundation. In a follow-up story, Abedin complained that her private email was “down” the evening of Oct. 9 and into Oct. 10, 2012, according to an email chain obtained through FOIA. “My bigger problem right now is I can’t even get into my Clinton email,” Abedin wrote to Stephanie Streett, executive director of the Clinton Foundation. They found those emails, by the way, in a vault next to the 18 minutes of tape missing from Nixon’s recorder during the Watergate scandal.
