Firehouse Subs helps fund new alerting system By Paul DelGuidice

FOR THE VILLA PARK INDEPENDENT

The Firehouse Sub sandwich shop chain is known for its support of fire departments in the municipalities where the restaurants are located. Pursuant to the business’s program, Villa Park recently received a donation of four television monitors from the Firehouse Subs program. The restaurant owner, Yogi Patel, provided the televisions to supplement the Z-Tron alert system at both Villa Park firehouses. Villa Park Fire Chief Ron Rakosnik publicly thanked Patel for the donation during the Village Board of Trustees meeting held on Monday, Sept. 12. “Firehouse Subs has great quality food, but on top of that has a public safety foundation,” said Patel. “The way it works is, we ask our customers to round up their purchase to the nearest dollar and we donate that to the foundation. We give back to the community, and I’m proud of that.” The Z-Tron fire station alerting system was upgraded for both firehouses in the Village about one year ago. This system replaces the old

U.S. News & World Report has released its most recently list of college rankings and Elmhurst Col-

lege has placed fourth in the Midwest among colleges and university with the best value for the money. According to the publication’s Best Colleges rankings for 2017, released on Sept. 3, Elmhurst College shot up five spots this year in the Best Value Schools in the Midwest category, from No. 9 last year to No. 4 this year. For the second year in a row, Elmhurst College has held its No. 10 spot in the Best Regional Univer-

sities category among 115 colleges and universities across the Midwest which provide a full range of undergraduate majors and master’s degree programs. The rankings showed that 75 percent of Elmhurst students in 2015 received grants based on financial need. The College notes that, when other forms of aid are added to the picture, 99 percent of fulltime Elmhurst students received some form of financial assistance.

The institution also must participate in the Yellow Ribbon Program. “We’re very proud to see national rankings like U.S. News continue to affirm Elmhurst College as a higher-education institution of outstanding quality and value, not only for traditional undergraduates but also for graduate students and veterans,” said Elmhurst College President Troy VanAken. “Our growing reputation as a Best Value School underscores our commitment to providing all of our students with an excellent education for the money.” The full report on Best Colleges Ruzicka also serves as co-chair on can be found at usnews.com/colthe Board of Directors of Chicago leges. the United Mine Workers pension system. Thousands of miners and former miners marched on Washington, D.C., last week. They’re calling for a congressional bailout. But there is a math problem for the pension system: Approximately 10,000 miners are still working, with nearly 120,000 miners drawing pension benefits. Kentucky GOP Sen. Rand Paul

said it would be better to get more miners working and wants Congress to end the Obama administration’s war on coal. Illinois Coal Association President Phil Gonet said there is no doubt what Obama has done to coal mines and coal miners. “There’s a war on coal,” Gonet said. “We’re being killed by the president. Our coal production is down 25 percent relative to where

we were last year at this time.” Illinois’ coal-mining jobs are also down, with only 3,700 miners currently working in Illinois — 2,000 fewer than in 1995. “The market for coal right now is bad because of the president’s war on coal and because of the low price of natural gas,” Gonet said. “Those have been in lockstep to work against us for the last about year-and-a-half in Illinois.”

Fantasy football – family style It’s the trending Sunday sensation more popular than selfies in restaurants or commercials during the Super Bowl. In a word, it’s fantasy football. According to the New York Post, via the American Express Spending and Saving Tracker, roughly a quarter of the U.S. population played fantasy football last season. Millions of those aficionados were women. That includes two at my house – my daughter and me. (Who doesn’t like a good fantasy?) Every. One. Is. Doing. It. (You, me, all of us!) We’re drafting a team. Conducting scientific football research. Choosing a lineup. Paying attention to the flex, and I’m not referring to football muscles. We’re living the fantasy. We tune in on Sunday (and Thursday and Monday) and hope to high heaven we can score enough points this week to beat our daughter’s team, which she’s aptly named

“The Gurley Squad” for obvious reasons. At least that’s how it goes at my house. We don’t call them Sunday fun-days for nothing. My family is fairly low-key about the game. Many fantasy fanatics win and lose big bucks each week through online fantasy sites, which are games of skill and technically not gambling or illegal. I can assure you nothing illegal is going on at my house. We’re just competing for the family trophy. That, and bragging rights.

While I’m relatively new to the adventure, the idea of fantasy football was conceived in 1962, with the first draft occurring in 1963 in Oakland, California. It was a small enterprise back then. Because of the intricacies of scoring by hand in the pre-smart phone era, the game grew gradually over the next few decades until the immediacy of Internet magic took hold. Fantasy football websites and apps have brought the game to the masses – including non-football types like me. This is my second year at the game, so I’m pretty much a pro. No matter that I came in last place last season. I was a rookie, and everyone knows you can’t expect too much during a rookie year. (My name’s Jill, not Ezekiel.) During the off-season, I acquired a vast amount of knowledge about running backs – full and half; they run the ball. And receivers – the wide kind;

blunder, perhaps, but Denver’s defense spooked me. Sorry, Cam! It’s not often you can brag about beating your daughter at football, but this week, I’ve got the rights. It’s a proud parenting moment. If my winning ways continue, I could take the trophy home this year. But, I best not count my touchdowns before the two-minute warning. I’m up against my husband this week and it’s likely to be a tough match. He’s got Andrew Luck and a possible Gronk to my Cam and Beckam Jr. Either way, we’re both winners. they catch the ball. And tight ends, who stand on the end and can both block bodies and catch the ball. There’s also the quarterback, but we all know what he does. A successful fantasy lineup requires expertise in fine-tuned research, extensive knowledge about player capabilities, insight into the sport and an awareness of sudden and unexpected changes to the game (Gronk). It all boils down to grilling my husband and three boys who, unlike me, have all the qualities listed above. I figure if I ask them lots of questions, their pigskin know-how will transfer over to me via familial osmosis. So far it’s working. They’re willing to provide me with insider insight as long as I make them nachos on game day. I figure it’s a fair trade. (Or maybe that’s a waiver?) Besides, I won during week one! Some egregious examples of local officials using taxpayer dollars for entertainment and travel expenses has led to a new law that restricts the use of tax money for certain nongovernment activities. A measure signed by Gov. Bruce Rauner completely prohibits local government officials from using taxpayer dollars for entertainment expenses. State Rep. David McSweeney (R-Dist. 52) said the measure he advanced through the General Assembly also requires extra scrutiny on travel expenses. “And there’s no reason that government officials should spend money on entertainment, and they certainly should be very limited, and it has to be justified and subject to a public roll call by a

vote if they’re going to spend money on meals, travel and lodging.” Edgar County Watchdogs cofounder Kirk Allen said he has found examples of this kind of spending going unchecked in several layers of government, from community college presidents to even state’s attorneys. “It’s not just at the lower local levels. It’s all the way up to the very enforcers of our laws,” Allen said. The measure could help restore public trust and keep property taxes from increasing. Allen said the spending in question and a lack of oversight from boards and councils weakens public trust rapidly. “It’s compounded by malfeasance by these very elected officials as well.” The measure takes effect Jan. 1, 2017.

I do pop on to The Facebook usually every day, but I cannot keep up It’s interesting times we live in. Some people will say in conversation to me, “You probably already saw that I blahblahblahed….” No, I did not see. They of course are referring to Facebook. I do pop on to The Facebook usually every day (and I do like to call it THE Facebook), but I cannot keep up. I jump on to post something on my page or change my cover pic and that’s about it. I see what is right there before me, and often it is posts from people I do not even know. I don’t troll and scroll and search out people’s updates. I am not up to date on anyone’s goings-on, even my own family. An old gal pal from high school was coming to town and there was an event created on Facebook for a gathering. If my sister had not told

me about it, I would have missed it. I get “invites” to hundreds of “events” and usually they are somebody wanting to sell me something. I don’t get notifications and I’m okay with that. Like I said, I cannot keep up. Don’t get me wrong. I love The Facebook. It makes my day with sillies and videos and heartwarming stories. I get my giggles and my headlines via this outlet that has be-

Community capsules What’s happening at Villa Park Village Hall

By Paul DelGuidice FOR THE VILLA PARK INDEPENDENT

The Villa Park Board of Trustees held a meeting at Village Hall on Monday, September 12, 2016. Village President Deborah Bullwinkel was not in attendance, and the Board approved Trustee Al Bulthuis as Village President Pro Tem for the evening. Trustee Chris Aiello was also not present at the beginning of the meeting. • Village Manager Rich Keehner read two proclamations: The first recognized September as Library Card Signup Month in Villa Park. The second Proclamation recognized the Garden Club of Villa Park, which recently changed its name from ‘The Men’s Garden Club of Villa Park.’ • The Board then discussed the proposed storm water management and combined sewer separation, and the charges attached to them. Adding a $6 per-month fee for storm water and a $3 permonth fee for sewer separation to water bills is proposed for residential customers with two dwelling

units or less. The fees will double for commercial, industrial and residential multi-family customers (more than two dwelling units.) The money raised from these fees, coupled with funds raised from the proposed sales tax increase, would be used to pay for sewer separation and storm water mitigation construction projects lying under approximately nine miles of streets that are scheduled for reconstruction using bond funds from the Nov. 2015 referendum.

During the Formal Agenda portion of Monday’s meeting, The Board voted to approve 12 items listed on the Consent Agenda, including: a) The Village Bill Listing dated August 22, 2016 in the amount of $828,599; b) The Village Bill Listing dated September 12, 2016 in the amount of $1,173,097; c) Minutes from the Village Committee of the Whole meeting for August 8, 2016; d) Minutes from the Village Formal Board meeting for August 8, 2016. e) First and Final reading of an ordinance approving the sale of four seized vehicles at auction. Money raised through the auction would be placed into the equipment replacement fund for purchase of additional equipment. The four seized vehicles are: a 2000 Nissan Pathfinder, a 2002 Jeep

Grand Cherokee, a 1995 Chevrolet Impala SS and a 2008 Peterbilt box truck. The minimum bid for the three passenger vehicles is $250. The minimum bid for the Peterbilt is $5,000. f) A First and Final reading of a Resolution authorizing a contract with Misfits Construction Company of Chicago for the Home Ave. water tower grounding project in the amount of $104,000. The electrical grounding system on the water tower on Home Ave. is not operating correctly. A lightning strike recently damaged antennas and other equipment connected to the tower. This project seeks to fix the issue and protect the equipment from future lighting strikes. g) A Resolution authorizing the final change order to the contract for the 2016 crack sealing and seal coating service program. The additional $7,875 will bring the total cost of the project to $142,313. h) A Resolution authorizing the final change order to the contract for the 2016 concrete flatwork program, bringing the total cost of the project to $39,962. i) A Resolution authorizing Village staff to seek a Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) to fund the Ridge Road water main improvement project. If funding is granted, it will pay $384,000 out of the total estimated cost of $512,000. j) A Resolution approving a CDBG/disaster recovery agree-

ment with DuPage County in the amount of $281,250. This grant was awarded, but an agreement needs to be executed to accept the funding. The money pays for the demolition of the property at 546 South Euclid Ave., which suffered significant damage during the April 2013 storm. k) A Resolution authorizing a contract with Corrective Asphalt Materials, LLC of South Roxana, Ill., for the 2016 Asphalt Surface Rejuvenating Treatment program in the amount of $67,969. The program, similar to past such projects, is a street surface maintenance measure designed to extend the life of previously resurfaced and reconstructed asphalt pavements in the Village. l) A Resolution approving a license agreement for a portion of the Sunset Drive right of way between Villa Park and RAS Investment Properties, LLC (Maple Crossing Apartments). The apartment complex is resurfacing their parking area located at the southwest corner of Sunset and Beverly Ave. To expand the parking, Maple Crossing sought this licensing agreement. The apartment owners will assume maintenance of the right-of-way as part of the agreement. • The Board of Trustees also voted unanimously to approve the First and Final reading of an Ordinance proposing the establishment of a special service area (SSA) for the North Ave. Townhomes. The Ordinance was needed to allow for a public hearing and other procedures connected with creating an SSA. If ultimately approved, the special service area will levy additional property taxes on the approximately 30 residential townhomes to pay for municipal services such as a sewage lift station and

property improvements.

• The Board also voted unanimously to approve the First and Final reading of an Ordinance approving an increase in the number of Class EEE liquor licenses allowed in Villa Park from four to five. The Chipotle Mexican Grill #2737 located at 298 W. North Ave. sought the license to sell margaritas at the restaurant.

• The combined sewer separation charge and storm water management program charge Ordinance was also approved by the Board with a 5-0 vote. A second (final) reading is scheduled for the next Board meeting to be held on Monday, Sept. 26.

• The First reading of an Ordinance amending the municipal code by adding a prohibition of service to debtors of the Village failed for lack of a motion. The item was a staff recommendation which would specify that debtors to the Village shall not be entitled to any Village service, permit, license or other Village action or approval unless that debt is paid in full. Exceptions to this would include water and sewer service or any emergency service such as police or fire. There was no indication when or if the Ordinance would be revisited at a future meeting.

• During the public comments on non-agenda items portion of Monday’s meeting, a Village resident addressed the Board about receiving a fine for locking the dumpster on the rental property he owns. The dumpster is chained because nontenants have been dumping trash in his dumpster. After appearing at an adjudication hearing, this resident was fined $75 for chaining his dumpster.

The Great River State Trail is in Wisconsin’s scenic Coulee Region, part of the Driftless Area that was untouched by glaciers during the last Ice Age. Visitors to the Great River trail will enjoy the changing wetlands of the Mississippi River backwaters, 500foot bluffs, hardwood forests, unique sand prairies and oak savannahs. COURTESY PHOTO The Independent

Explore the Great River State Trail The Mississippi isn’t the only river focus along the Great River State Trail. It bridges 18 streams and channels coursing their way to the Mighty Mississippi. These crossings and surrounding wetlands are havens for wildlife. Deer are often seen in the cool shade even at mid-day. The Black River forms a maze of channels that herons and egrets love. Interconnecting links to over 101 miles of state trails. In the sleepy river town of Trempealeau you can watch tugboats finesse 400-foot-long barges through lock and dam No. 6. Nearby, Perrot State Park is a scenic wonder. In ancient times, its soaring bluffs were isolated from those on the western shore when torrents of glacial meltwater changed the river’s course. It became a natural landmark for people from the sophisticated Native American Hopewell culture of 2,000 years ago, to the French explorer Nicholas Perrot in 1685. Just south of trails-end at Marshland, you can tour the Trempealeau National Wildlife Refuge, a 5,600-acre riverside home for migratory waterfowl, herons, egrets and resident bald eagles. You’ll agree, it’s a great river and a great place to be. Follow Hwy. 35 to the eastern edge of Trempealeau. There, on the west side of the road, you will find a well-marked parking lot and large

In the St. Ignatius victory, Addison Trail was down 2-1 and came back to win 3-2. Dini noted the team has taken a step forward of late on the defensive end. “In those three Pepsi games we let in a total of two goals,” he said. “We play good team defense. stered by the addition of senior defender Edmond Montano. Addison Trail has allowed only eight goals in its first nine games. “Edmond played for an academy team and this is his first year with us,” said Dini. “He’s 6-3 and is huge out there. He wins those 50-50 balls in the air and marks the other teams’ best players. He has the footwork and foot skills of someone a lot smaller. He has real good ball control and is real poised.” Dini added the team also benefits from a senior-laden roster. “Out of the 18 guys on the team, 12 are seniors,” he said. “We have a lot of senior leadership. The experience we have is paying off.” Enrique Luna was leading the team in scoring through late last

week with eight goals and five assists. Jonathan Hernandez had five goals and six assists. “Those two have really good chemistry together,” said Dini, referring to Luna and Hernandez. “Jonathan is a bigger guy at 6-feet tall and is strong with the ball. Enrique gives us speed up top.” Junior goalies Jacob Grygo and Jean Avila have also provided a shot in the arm for the Blazers. “We split a lot of the time between the two,” said Dini. “They are both really good goalies and we are fortunate to have two goalies like them.” Addison Trail also is looking forward to being back at full strength. Senior starting left back Juan Martinez returned from a hand injury recently and the team is looking

forward to the return of all-sectional sweeper Uriel Martinez from injury shortly. “It’s awesome that we are 8-1, but we’ve had a lot of injuries,” said Dini. “It’s nice that Juan is back and it will be a big boost getting Uriel back. A lot of different guys have stepped up. Getting players back will be big both physically and mentally. This is a fun team. They have great chemistry together and they get along great. They also hate to lose. It’s a real competitive group.” Before playing in the Pepsi final, Addison Trail was scheduled to play Hinsdale South, Proviso East (today) and Glenbard West (Saturday). “That’s four games in seven days,” said Dini. “It will be crazy, but a lot of guys will get playing time.”

come very much a part of the fabric of our lives. My own dear sweet hubby posts some magical stuff there. But if you want to make sure I get your invite or hear your news, text me. I was in the grocery store a while back (a few years now) and I recall hearing two women have an enthusiastic long-lost reunion exchange that went something like: “Sharon! Oh my goodness, it’s been years! How are you? You look great!” “Mindy! Wow! Hey! How are you? I’m good? How are you? You look good! It has been forever!” “Yeah, married with kids now.” “Me too! Husband, two kids.” “Yeah, wow, time goes so fast. So good to see you, gotta run. Hey, let’s catch up on Facebook!” They were all smiles and hugs and giggles and “oh wows” and “it’s been so long” and “so good to see you” and that lasted all of 90 seconds and then it was … we’ll catch up on Facebook. Do you recall running into someone in the store and standing and chatting for half an hour? I do. We hadn’t seen each other in a while. We caught up right then and there. There was no Facebook. There was no technology to replace conversation in the flesh. Interesting times. It may sound like I’m an old crabby lady, and maybe sometimes I am. I appreciate the new and I also like the old. My hubby and I recently ran into my sons’ first grade teacher. We stood in the parking lot and chatted for 30 minutes. Sure, I can look her up on Facebook, but a good oldfashioned conversation is good too. When I was in grade school we learned the rhyme: Make new friends and keep the old, one is silver and the other is gold. Technology is a new friend. Face to face is an old friend. There is room for both. And emoticons can never replace the feel of a hug. Kelly Epperson Simmons can be reached at PO Box 2324, Loves Park IL 61131 and info@kellyepperson. com.

Three ways to do good on a road trip (StatePoint) Many Americans are rethinking typical vacation goals of relaxing and having fun by undertaking something a bit less conventional: doing something good for the world. to defy hunger. Every other year, a rally takes place called “MINI Takes the States,” whereby MINI owners explore the backroads, curves and hidden gems of America. The rally supports Feeding America, the nation’s leading domestic hunger-relief organization and its network of 200 food banks and 60,000 local food pantries and meal programs. A portion of each registration fee is donated to Feeding America and a food collection takes place each morning of the rally. Participants are also encouraged to start fundraising pages online and spread the word to friends and family to contribute

How You Can Give Back You too can turn your road trip into an opportunity to do good.

Whether the great outdoors is your ultimate destination, or you’re passing parks on your route to another adventure, consider taking some time for a park clean-up. Hit the trail in a national, state or local park. Bring along some gloves and plastic bags. As you enjoy your hike, stop and pick up litter -- which is not only an eyesore, but a hazard to wildlife and the ecosystem. You can time your visit with a scheduled volunteer opportunity or just do it yourself. Walking tours are one way to explore a destination. A perhaps more valuable way is to engage with its residents meaningfully. At your destination, consider volunteering with Feeding America or with a local food pantry. The mark of a great vacation can come in many forms. Consider a different kind of road trip.

Indiana Wine Trail Fall Haul runs November 6 and 7 The Indiana Wine Trail in Southeast Indiana will host their annual Fall Haul Event on Saturday, November 6 and Sunday, November 7. Only this time, instead of pairing wine and food, the wine is part of the food. They’ll be serving wine sauces, wine tapas, and even wine cake (sounds a little like Dr. Seuss there). The different wineries along the Indiana Wine Trail are using this event to showcase their wines through food tastings. But visitors along the trail will be able to get the recipes as well as special discounts on their wines. The wine and food tastings will be free, but you may purchase larger portions. The Indiana Wine Trail is made up of six wineries — Thomas Family Winery, Lanthier Winery, Madison Vineyards, Ertel Cellars, StreamCliff Farm Winery and The Ridge Winery — along and around the Ohio River Scenic Byway. For more information, visit the Indiana Wine Trail or Switzerland County Tourism.
