Bullwinkel to run for U.S House of Representatives By Paul DelGuidice For The Villa Park Independent
VILLA PARK — Last week, Villa Park Village President Deborah Bullwinkel announced her intention to seek the Democratic nomination for U.S. House of Representatives in Illinois’ 8th District. Current holding the seat is Tammy Duckworth, chose not to run for a third term in the House, opting instead to run against incumbent U.S. Senator Mark Kirk (R-Illinois) in the upcoming November 2016 election. Bullwinkel, 47, a communications consultant, was first elected to the Villa Park Board of Trustees in 2009. In 2013, she successfully ran for Village President. The announcement of her intentions to seek the Congressional seat in the 8th District came on Tuesday, August 25, just one day before the 95th anniversary of ratification of the 19th Amendment, which gave women full voting rights in the United States. In her announcement, she stressed her gender and called out the Republican-controlled House of Representatives by releasing the following statement: “Every day, politicians in Congress zealously attack middle-class families and women.
Whether it is fair wages and pay equity, economic opportunity for the middle class, paid family leave, or access to good health care and reproductive
rights, extremist Republicans in Congress will fight any positive change. If you’re a working person, and especially if you’re a woman, the assault
never stops. I won’t back down from that fight.” Democratic challengers for the seat include Hoffman Estates lawyer/small business
owner Raja Krishnamoorthi, and Michael Noland of Elgin, who is currently serving the

22nd District as a State Senator. State Senator Tom Cullerton (D-23rd), also of Villa Park and Bullwinkel’s predecessor as Villa Park Village President, briefly campaigned for the 8th District seat but stepped out of the race in July of this year. Asked why she thought she was the best choice to represent the 8th District, Bullwinkel was quick to point out her years of public service. “I have several years as a public servant at the local level,” she said. “I’m in the trenches with residents every day. Many local issues translate to the national level: economic development, employment, health care.” In addition, Bullwinkel pointed out her experience as a

communications consultant and her work with senior citizens, veterans and people with dis-
abilities. She feels it “gives her a unique perspective on issues affecting her constituency.” “I’m a natural born advocate,” she said. “I help people solve problems.” Bullwinkel also related that she had spoken with Congresswoman Tammy Duckworth, and received much advice related to the 8th District. “Tammy was very gracious with her time,” said Bullwinkel, “She was encouraging and gave me some great advice.” The only Republican currently declared for the race is attorney Andrew Straw of Schaumburg. Dist. 2 DuPage County Board member Pete DiCianni of Elmhurst has said he is “exploring the possibility of running” for the Con-
gressional seat. He is expected to make the announcement on September 13 at his annual Talkie Trot event for the Center for Speech & Language Disorders. The deadline for major party candidates to file is in December. The Primary will take place on March 15, 2016. The Illinois 8th Congressional District represents all or part of Addison, Bloomingdale, Carol Stream, Elgin, Elk Grove Village, Glendale Heights, Hanover Park, Hoffman Estates, Lombard, Palatine, Roselle, Schaumburg, Streamwood, Villa Park and Wood Dale. The district is stretched over four counties (Cook, DuPage, Kane and Lake) and encompasses a population of nearly 725,000.

The gifts of summer E
ach day comes bearing gifts. But not in the way you might think. I wake in anticipation of the presents they have left for me this time. “They” are not leprechauns or Santa’s elves. The gifts in question come from my kids. Yeah, I find it hard to believe myself. When I enter the kitchen each morning, I’m guaranteed at least one cardboard pizza round left over from the last night’s midnight feast. Pizza cardboard is much too valuable to toss in the trash, if they could locate the trash (which I’m not sure they could). They also leave me charred pizza nibbles at the bottom of the oven. In a word: yum. Almost as steadfast as the cardboard are errant ramen noodles, which are sure to be scattered on the countertop and (on good days) the stovetop. Sometimes soggy ramen remnants rest in the sink, but only on those rare and lucky days ending in Y. Also in the sink I find hardened, congealed and coagulated food scraps on plates and forks. It’s like a little guessing

game. What scrumptious morsels did they partake in during the wee hours of the morning? They’ve also taken to baking cakes. At midnight. They eat the whole thing because they know I wouldn’t want to be tempted by cake first thing in the morning. My needs are their priority and as a mom my pride surges. They do allow me to clean the cake pan, which I guess is their way of sharing the experience with me. The floor – oh the floor! It is probably the best part. Cheese puffs, candy bits, grapes, potato chip crumbs and even sticky red juice globs all scatter across the floor in a random pattern that demonstrates their artistic talents. It is a wealth of sticky, crunchy foodstuff and it is mine to deal with. All mine. Candy wrappers stuffed

behind the computer or TV are like little treasure hunting finds. Bright and lively all yellow and orange, they practically scream joy – either that or sugar high. Cups half full of juice, soda pop or milk litter flat surfaces in the kitchen and beyond. Except I suppose litter is a poor choice of words because it connotes negativity. Them leaving me their extra drinks is thoughtful and generous. They drink less so I can access their leftovers. How sweet is that? Despite their inability to find the garbage for most things, I can always rest assured it will be heaping and waiting to be emptied. Sometimes one of them makes late night coffee (the best time for coffee so I’m told) and most (but never all) of the coffee grounds are dispensed to the trash. The rest wait for me on the floor next to the garbage can. I give thanks it was a near miss. They were trying. There’s yet another reason for gratitude: at least one of them has successfully located the garbage. They also move furniture, depending on the activity of

the evening. Sometimes, as I am hefting a chair or table from one place to another, I fantasize about what they were doing and how much fun they were having while rearranging the living room. Dirty socks, crumpled T-shirts and discarded shorts only ensure my job stability as the prestigious CLO (Chief Laundry Organizer) of the household. The same goes for damp towels, which may be located in any room, as long as they are heaped on the floor. Towel bars are so 1990s. Ditto that for using a towel more than once. That would be
gross. Well, more gross than leaving dirty socks and wet towels lying all over the house. I suppose I’m to blame for these gifts. Don’t be too hard on me. Summer is short – as is life. Sometimes you have to pick your battles (and dirty socks) and learn to laugh at the rest of it. Or at least know they didn’t go to bed hungry, see the glass as half full and (of course) let them eat cake. Jill Pertler is an awardwinning syndicated columnist, published playwright and author. The Brady Bunch and today’s pop culture generation gap
S
ome things get lost between the generations, like mainly pop culture references. I exposed my boys to much of the music of my youth, but I failed them in the TV trivia department. My sons, age 21 and 22, cannot name the six Brady Bunch children. They both knew Marsha, and one named Peter as well. People my age are shocked at this lack of basic knowledge. My guys shrug and say that show was on twenty years before they born. Some things that I expect “everyone” to know simply do not matter to millennials. They did know Popeye and that he ate spinach to get strong, but they didn’t know his lady friend was Olive Oyl. They had heard of Underdog, but didn’t know the name Sweet Polly Purebread. They knew Jonny Quest. When I asked if they knew had a thing for “the little red-haired girl,” no reply. Not interested. And I bet they don’t give a rip about the new Charlie Brown movie coming to theaters in the fall. I get it. I’m not interested in much of their viewing habits. That’s the true generation gap; not that we don’t know each other’s “stuff,” we simply aren’t

that intrigued. Some of what my sons find funny bounces right off of me. We agree on some things (Stephen Colbert, Jon Stewart), but a marathon of The Hangover movies, no thanks. The nature of life is different strokes for different folks, and some of it is age related. Some of today’s pop culture fascinates me. The recent gaming tournament, The International (TI), is one such phenomenon. The prize pot is about $18 million and most of it is fan funded. Video gamers around the world chip in a buck and they tune in to see the top teams play a video game. They also come in the flesh. A huge stadium in Seattle was filled with fans watching the teams battle it out on a huge jumbotron screen. TI is in its fifth year and I am wowed by the whole thing, but I have no desire to watch. My younger son had it on while I

ESO kicks off new season with actor Brian Dennehy ELMHURST — “A Season of Celebration” promises to bring excitement and musical delights to Elmhurst Symphony audiences as both Stephen Alltop, ESO’s Music Director, and Rika Seko, ESO Concertmaster, celebrate their 20th anniversaries with the orchestra. Concert programs ranging from Mozart to Copland are sure to please a wide range of musical tastes, and special events throughout the season will infuse the concert experience with a celebratory flavor. The season opener on October 17 at 7 p.m., “Copland’s Music of the Heartland,” features the acclaimed stage, screen and television actor Brian Dennehy, who will narrate two remarkable works: Copland’s A Lincoln Portrait and Schwantner’s New Morning for the World, based on the powerful speeches of Martin Luther King, Jr. Stanger Young Artist Audition winner Joshua Brown plays Waxman’s Carmen Fantasie, and the ESO performs the Suite from another Copland favorite, Appalachian Spring. A barbeque dinner with two seatings will precede the concert, and Dennehy will join guests for a brief visit during this time. Reservations are required; visit elmhurstsymphony.org for BRIAN DENNEHY
ticket information and details. “Mozart Madness,” featuring six of the finest singers in Chicago performing arias and scenes from three of Mozart’s operatic masterpieces, with staging and supertitles, follows in November. In January, “Vivaldi, Telemann and Beyond” offers glorious gems of the Baroque period by Vivaldi, Telemann and other favorite composers, performed by members of the ESO. The Apollo Chorus takes center stage in March when it joins forces with the ESO and a stellar cast of soloists in a not-to-be-missed performance of Mendelssohn’s Elijah. The season ends in May with “Mutual Admiration: Beethoven, Mozart and Tchaikovsky,” highlighted by Mozart’s Sinfonia Concertante in E flat, performed by Rika Seko and her long-time friend, Venezuelan-born violist Anibal Dos Santos, and Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 4 in F minor. Concert dates are as follows: Copland: Music of the Heartland Saturday, October 17, 2015, 7 p.m. Mozart Madness Sunday, November 15, 2015, 3 p.m. Vivaldi, Telemann and Beyond! Sunday, January 24, 2016, 3 p.m. Mendelssohn’s Elijah Sunday, March 13, 2016, 3 p.m. Mutual Admiration: Beethoven, Mozart & Tchaikovsky Saturday, May 7, 2016, 7 p.m.
You can still subscribe for the 55th season of the Elmhurst Symphony Orchestra as it performs in the state-of-the-art facility at Elmhurst Christian Reformed Church. In this spectacular season the Symphony will offer five different concerts; patrons can choose packages of three to five concerts or individual tickets. Forest Preserve District opens new off-leash dog area WHEATON — The Forest Preserve District of DuPage County was scheduled to celebrate the opening a new 34-acre off-leash dog area at Hawk Hollow Forest Preserve

The new area features four separate and fully enclosed fields (one just for dogs under 25 pounds), an enclosed 1.2mile limestone trail, and a 60-vehicle asphalt parking lot off Bittersweet Drive just south of Stearns Road. It replaces the off-leash dog area 5.4 miles away at Pratt’s Wayne Woods Forest Preserve in Wayne, which will remain open until
Dec. 31, 2015. To use the off-leash area, dog owners must have valid District permits, which are available weekdays through Visitor Services at (630) 933-7248 or 3S580 Naperville Road in Wheaton. was in his room so he explained a bit to. The game they play is DOTA2, Defenders of The Ancients. There is much strategy in choosing their heroes. That was the part I saw. Very slow and not compelling viewing. When the game started, it made no sense to me and I shrugged and walked away. I simply do not care. Much like my sons do not care about what rocked my boat as a kid. No big deal. As it should be. Progress, innovation, technology, expansion, I’m all for it. If it weren’t the norm, we all would still be playing jacks and kick the can. A little nostalgia is good. My sons learned to play jacks and marbles when they were kids. But today’s kids get tablets
when they’re two and many never go in a car without an electronic device. I am not passing judgement or lamenting. Our granddaughter is five and she loves hanging with us. Our time together is low-tech. She loves to dig in the dirt, plant flowers, go to the park, draw and paint and create. Every once in a while we watch a movie. This winter when we do turn on the telly, I think I know what I will introduce her to. “Marsha, Marsha, Marsha!” Some things can simply skip a generation. My Mom the Wonder Woman By Vi Larson

t was back in the Great Depression era that my mom set out to show men, like Annie Oakley did, that women could do anything they set their minds to do. And they could often do them as well or better than the men. In most things, mom was a very “proper” lady who minded all the lady-like “rules” and got on well with my dad. It took a lot to get her “dander” up. But once in awhile it did happen, and here’s one of those instances that I remember so well. It was one of those super hot Saturday’s in the summer time. side of the house. My Mother needed to go to the store for groceries, but the men were too busy to drive us there or even to babysit my two brothers and me. So Mom took the three of us on the bus to 22nd street in Berwyn where all the “good stores” were and she picked up all the groceries it took to feed a large family. Needless to say she was extremely tired and exhausted. We arrived home to find all three men sound asleep in various parts of the house, and there in the driveway was
my Dad’s new four-door red Ford. My mother did not know how to drive but she was so mad at the whole situation it didn’t stop her from grabbing the keys and telling us kids to stay on the front porch and behave. Well, she started the car and figured out how to shift gears, as she had been watching how the men did it. She backed out, shifted into first and off she went around the block. My oldest brother went in and woke the men and they were hysterical. They were out
waving her down and she kept going around and around until she was sure she could do it well. From that time on my mom was the best driver, and she didn’t have to drag three kids and a ton of groceries on busses ever again. Never underestimate the power of a woman!!!

times there is availability of an ‘acceptable’ match.” The local community, not only at St. Philip but also the Addison community at large, is stepping up to help Sophia on Sunday, September 6, between the hours of 7:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. at St. Philip The Apostle Church in Addison. There will be a blood drive along with a bake sale to benefit Sophia, since medical bills are mounting as well. The event will also provide a chance for anyone to enroll in Be the Match, a national bone marrow donor registry. Representatives from Be the Match will be taking swab samples at the blood drive at
St. Philip School on September 6. More fundraising efforts are being planned for Sophia’s family and there is a big push to encourage people to sign up with Be the Match “She loves ballet, but had to stop going to class,” her mother Michelle Trujillo told one news source. “And a temperature of 100.5 or higher for her means at least two days for a hospital stay. Due to her lower immune system she has missed months of school.” It is hoped that the blood drive and matching opportunity will be successful and begin to turn the page for Sophia, so she can go on to live a normal life.

Community rallies around St. Philip student on Sept. 6
By Dee Longfellow For The Independent
ADDISON — A first grade student at St. Philip School was recently diagnosed with Aplastic Anemia and is currently in dire need of a bone marrow transplant. Six-year-old Sophia Trujillo has a diverse mix of nationalities, being half Filipino and a mix of Italian, Spanish and Irish, making it difficult to find a match, according to doctors. A report was recently published which included comments from Dr. William Goodell, Sophia’s oncologist/hematologist at Advocate Children’s Hospital in Park Ridge. “Aplastic anemia is really bone marrow failure,” Dr. Goodell said. “And, like any other organ failure, this is a life-threatening disease.” He further explained that Sophia has low platelets, which doesn’t allow her blood to clot the way it should, so she bruises easily. He said a bone marrow transplant was the best treatment for severe aplastic anemia, which are most commonly obtained from volunteer donors. “Stem cells for bone marrow transplantation must be matched perfectly to prevent rejection or serious reactions in the recipient,” Goodell added. “Bone marrow transplant teams look for the best available match. If a perfect match is not available, many

Addison Trail football team out to defend conference title Blazers sport mix of experience and promising potential By Mike Miazga Correspondent
The Addison Trail football team had a memorable 2014 season where it won the West Suburban Conference Gold Division title with a 6-0 record and advanced to the second round of the state playoffs. Now, the Blazers are looking to carry that momentum into this fall with a roster mix of returning veterans and talented newcomers. Addison Trail has six players back on offense, including seniors Jose Acencion (OL), Andrew Lopez (OL), Ryan Zygowicz (QB) and Mike
Hundley (RB), along with junior wide receiver Darrion Conrad. Key newcomers on the offensive side of the ball include junior wide receivers Ricky Perez and Stevan Jones. “Those two kids have looked good,” said Addison Trail coach Paul Parpet Jr., whose team opened the 2015 season with a 19-14 win over Glenbard South, a fellow 2014 conference champion. “They give us size and a deep threat. But they are young. It will be a baptism by fire with them. We spent time in the summer working on the passing game and running routes. The big thing is they are making the adjustment from going against a sophomore defense to a varsity defense. It’s been a process, but their potential is very high.”
The Blazers return seniors Zach Atiyeh (LB), Nick Fugarino (CB), Matt Domek (DL) and Josh Simko (DL) on defense. Addison Trail also has three sophomores up on the varsity with Mike Renc (center), Nick D’Ambrose (secondary) and Nick DiBenardo (inside linebacker). “They definitely are newcomers to watch,” said Parpet Jr. “Just like with Steve and Ricky, it will be baptism by fire. It’s a big step for them. They are very talented and figuring things out every day.” Parpet Jr. likes the way things are shaping up on both sides of the ball. “I think we have a chance to be a pretty good football team on defense,” he said. “Offensively our running game is going to have to control the ball until we can get
Willowbrook girls volleyball team opens season Warriors go to three sets with Bartlett By Mike Miazga Correspondent
The Willowbrook girls volleyball team opened the season with a pair of non-conference matches against Fenwick and Bartlett. In a 25-18, 25-13 non-conference loss to Fenwick, Danielle McNamara had two kills and one dig. Celia Dewyer added one ace and one dig. Grace Chantos had one assist and three digs. Olivia Pennebaker had two kills. Kiley Kelly added one dig. Maya Bullock had two kills. Maddie Weinhold chipped in with three assists and one dig. Emily Ligocki also had three assists and one dig. Jamie Chiapetta had one kill and one dig. Kalyn Konrath had one kill. Willowbrook also dropped a 22-25, 25-17, 25-17 non-conference contest to Bartlett. McNamara had five kills. Dewyer and Chantos each had two digs. Pennebaker had five kills and four digs. Bullock had one kill. Weinhold had five assists and one dig. Ligocki had one kill, 15 assists and one dig. Chiapetta finished with four kills and three digs. Konrath finished with three kills and one dig, while Milena Sogure had three kills.
Willowbrook is coming off a 2014 season where it went 18-18 overall and took third in the West Suburban Conference Gold Division with a 4-2 record. Pennebaker, a junior outside hitter, racked up 58 kills and 18 blocks last year. Chiapetta, a junior outside hitter as well, had 49 kills. Konrath is a senior middle blocker who registered 22 kills and 15 blocks last season. McNamara is a senior right-side hitter who finished with 141 kills and 25 blocks last year. Bullock, also a senior right side, had 79 kills and 14 blocks. Also back is senior libero Kelly Conley, who had 250 digs last year. “Kelly, our returning libero, will be leading our defense again,” said Willowbrook coach Sue Bower, who is in her 12th season at the helm. Ligocki, a junior setter, and Sogura, a senior middle blocker, are key newcomers to the team. “We have a core of returning players who had a successful season for Willowbrook last year,” said Bower. “They have already set goals to not only maintain the record from last year, but to improve upon it. They have been working hard on their communication skills and keeping a positive atmosphere on the court. We are working on some position changes. The girls are looking forward to the challenge.”
the passing game timed out. It’s all about timing and recognition and having confidence in each other. We need to get some games under our belt to continue to get these guys better. I like the mix of guys we have here. We have the younger guys and the guys back from last year’s conference-championship and playoff-qualifying group. The experienced guys are showing the younger guys where we need to get to. These guys have done a great job of coming together in the time we’ve had them. They count on each other.” Parpet Jr. noted the team’s schedule again is loaded with strong opposition. “Our schedule is not easy,” he said. “We have Oak Park for a crossover and Willowbrook in Week 3. We have to be ready to go.
It’s not an easy road. Hinsdale South has been predicted to be the top team in the conference. They are pretty good and they have a lot of kids back from last year’s playoff team.” Schedule aside, Parpet Jr., is looking forward to another fun and successful season. “Because of our strength on defense and up front and our ability to run the football and with some linemen, quarterback and running back returning, hopefully we’ll be ready to put our conference title on the line,” he said. “I think we will be. I love it. This is a fun bunch of young men. It’s a good mix of experience and inexperience. The guys are hungry. We just need to play games and then critique the things we need to focus on. We’re looking forward to it.”
Addison Trail boys soccer team scores impressive win over Lake Park By Mike Miazga Correspondent
The Addison Trail boys soccer team gained some key momentum right out of the gates recently. The Blazers kicked off their season with a 2-0 non-conference win over Lake Park. “We won at their place and they were a preseason top 20 team,” noted Addison Trail coach Ryan Dini. “The last couple years against them we didn’t have too much. This time we came out fired up and we flew around and scored two goals in the first 20 minutes. This team expects to be good and they are confident. They want to show everybody they belong with the big names in high school soccer around here. We controlled the tempo against Lake Park and jumped on them early and defensively we shut them down.” Sophomore Jonathan Hernandez and senior Damian Zielinski each had a goal for Addison Trail. Enrique Luna had an assist. Addison Trail is coming off a 2014 season where it went 7-10-1 and 2-4 in West Suburban Conference Gold Division play. “We were real young last year and we have a lot of those kids back,” said Dini. “We expect to be pretty good this year. We have a lot of kids back with varsity experience.” Returning for the Blazers are seniors Zielinski (midfield) and Fernando Alvarado (defense), along with juniors Tomasz Kania (midfield), Uriel Martinez (defense) and Isvic Quintana (midfield). Kania, Alvarado and Martinez are in their
third varsity seasons, while Quintana is in his second as a junior. Key newcomers include seniors Cosme Garcia (goalie) and Adrian Rozkuszka (defense), junior Ruben Amaro (midfield) and Hernandez, who is a sophomore forward. “Our strength will be our speed,” said Dini. “We have a lot of fast kids. I like our ball control. We like to keep the ball on the ground and switch fields and get behind the defense. We also have a lot of experience. We have a lot of juniors and multiple other players with years of playing varsity soccer.” Alvarado and Martinez give the Blazers strength in the back. “They are two returning defenders and they are defenders with size,” said Dini. Dini also is excited about Garcia’s potential in goal. “I’m excited about a lot of things with this group,” he said. “We have good leadership. Cosme will be a stud in goal. He’s one of our captains.” Other captains include Kania (all-sectional a year ago) and Luna. Dini said the competition in the West Suburban Gold will be as fierce as ever. “Morton will be good again and we play them at their place,” he said. “This is my fourth year as head coach and my eighth year being involved and this is by far the toughest the conference has been. Morton and Leyden will be very good and so will Downers Grove South and Willowbrook is pretty good. The conference will be loaded. We’ll see how it plays out.” Addison Trail was in the midst of hosting its annual tournament earlier this week.

SPRINGFIELD — A 2012 study found that Illinois suspends more African-American students than any other state in the U.S., including a Black-White suspension disparity that is the highest in the country. To address this alltoo-apparent problem and the overall frequency of out-ofschool discipline, a new law will help to ensure that all students are in school and off the streets as much as possible. The new law will address the
frequency and racial disparity of suspensions and expulsions in several ways, including the following:

State only paying out Lottery prizes of less than $25,000 By Mark Fitton Illinois News Network
SPRINGFIELD — Win the Lottery? You might want to hold off on that new bass boat, dream house or even paying off any big debts. Because of the state’s continuing budget impasse, Illinois is only paying out Lottery prizes of less than $25,000. A prize of less than $600 can be collected from any of the more than 8,000 retailers that sell lottery products. And prizes less than $25,000 can still be claimed at any of the Illinois Lottery’s claim centers, which can be found at illinoislottery.com. After that? Well, it looks like a Lottery big winner will have to wait for the winnings until Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner and the Democratic supermajorities that control the General Assembly can get past their differences and agree to a budget for the current fiscal year, which began July 1. “Due to the ongoing budget situation in Springfield, some lottery winner payments have been delayed. All winners will be paid in full as soon as the Lottery and the Illinois Comptroller have the legislative authority to do so,” said a spokesperson for the Lottery. Lottery officials say payouts of $25,000 or more would have to come from the office of Comptroller Leslie
Geissler Munger (R-Lincolnshire) and her office says it lacks the legal ability to make those payments. “We are not allowed by law to pay anything out of an appropriated account during the budget impasse without a court order or consent decree, or unless it is a statutory continuing appropriation,” said Rich Carter, spokesman for Munger’s office. State Rep. Jack Franks, D-Marengo, said the situation is outrageous. “It’s worse than a travesty; it’s a fraud,” said Franks. “I don’t see how the state can sell tickets and take money when they have no intention, or authority, to pay the winners.” “I can tell you if you owe the state some money, they’re not going to say ‘Wait, we’re going to hold off until you’ve got your budget taken care of at home, and then just give us a call and you can pay us.’ That’s not how it works in the real world.” Franks said the Lottery, in fact, should have to pay penalties on late payments to big winners. The state is effectively holding money for its own use and depriving the winners use of that money, and “they know that time is valuable.” “We couldn’t be in a worse situation if we tried,” Franks said of Illinois. The governor’s budget proposal, the now-vetoed plan sent to the governor by legislative Democrats and now the
actual spending to meet statutory obligations and satisfy court orders are all billions out of whack, and the red numbers are only growing, Franks said. “It just gets progressively worse,” he added. The state is now nearly 60 days into
its fiscal year with the only significant portion of its budget approved being that for primary and secondary education. By one estimate compiled by Senate Democrats, the state is spending at a pace to exceed anticipated revenue by more than $5 billion.

Back-to-School tips to keep kids healthy and safe (StatePoint) — Back-to-school prep means more than a trip to the office supply store. Help kids stay strong, healthy and safe this school year by putting wellness front and center. “Thinking about back-to-school now can help parents keep kids on track for a healthy summer and start to school,” says Dr. Sandra Hassink, MD, FAAP, President of the American Academy of Pediatrics. With that in mind, Hassink recommends taking the following steps.
Ease into the School Schedule
Ease the back-to-school transition by
keeping bedtime and meals scheduled during the summer and adjusting timing as school approaches. If your child has been going to bed later than usual, begin adjusting his or her bedtime earlier toward the end of summer. Depending on age, children and teens need between 8.5 to 9.5 hours of sleep nightly. For young children, arranging to see their new classroom and meet their new teacher before school starts can calm first day jitters. Go over the school schedule with your child, including how she will get to school and what the plans are for after school time.

The back-to-school season is a good time for scheduling a pediatric exam. Create a list of items you want to discuss with your child’s pediatrician. This list should include ensuring your child is up-to-date on vaccinations, a crucial part of preventive care. It’s a good idea to build a medical home with a pediatrician by sticking with one doctor or medical practice throughout childhood and adolescence. The doctor will be better informed of your child’s medical history and aware of any emerging problems. Beyond medical testing, pediatricians are well-equipped to counsel patients and parents on emotional and social issues, as well as issues that often crop up during adolescence, such as smoking, drugs, drinking, sexual activity and depression. “Parents can ask a pediatrician about anything related to the care of their child or teen, medical or not,” says Dr Hassink. “The visit can be a good way to bring up these issues.”

Consider Sports
Sports can foster confidence, cooperation and healthy habits, and the start of the school year brings many opportunities to join various programs. Hydration, nutrition and proper conditioning are important for any sport, especially those with intense training in warm weather. Schedule a sports physical with your pediatrician to discuss your child’s overall health and how to prevent injuries.
Talk Safety
If your child will be walking to school, travel the route with him to assess its safety. Find out about traffic patterns and crossing guards. Teach your child safety rules like looking both ways. If possible, have your child commute with an older sibling or neighbor. If your child will be riding a bike or skateboard, be sure he wears a helmet. Review basic rules for safer riding. Bus riders should also be mindful of safety rules, like remaining in one’s seat and listening to the driver. More back-to-school tips can be found at www.healthychildren.org. As a parent, you can take steps to help ensure your children are prepared for a happy, healthy school year.

GroundLink drives for major growth in Chicago market New Chief of Sales calls Elmhurst home, soon company will too By Dee Longfellow For The Elmhurst Independent
ELMHURST — GroundLink is a global car service that leverages a proprietary technology platform to provide seamless, reliable and consistent ground transportation for travelers worldwide in most major cities and 110 countries. Sound like a lot of buzzwords you’d find in a corporate mission statement? Well, perhaps so but to put it very simply – be prepared to have an entirely
new experience when you need ground transportation, a ride to the airport or the service of a limousine. And you’ll do it through an app on your phone. Offering transportation through an app is a relatively new concept, but it is growing every day. While a few other companies have started similar ventures, the field is very new and GroundLink feels poised for a great deal of growth here in the Chicago market, which will be headquartered right here in Elmhurst, where the company’s new Chief Sales Officer Michael Mooradian lives. The Independent had a chance to sit down with Mooradian, to learn more about what GroundLink does, the market for the service and how Elmhurst might benefit (hint: JOBS!).
How it works If you’ve used a limo service to be picked up at the airport, you know some of the frustrations. All you are given is the license plate number of a limo or car, so you stand out on one of those islands with the shelters and watch hopefully as car after car after car drives by. One person recalled doing it in the rain and snow, so you’re not only fighting the wind and weather, but also watching your luggage, as you strain to see the license plates on the cars approaching. When it seems like forever, especially in bad weather, you start to think, “did I miss it?” With GroundLink, the mobile app
After a career in sales management with global organizations in the technology and travel industries, including vice president of worldwide sales for Chicago-based Orbitz for Business, Mooradian was tabbed by GroundLink to take over the grand expansion they anticipate here in Chicago. Ever since coming to this market, the company has grown each year, Mooradian said, making Chicago the company’s 4th largest market in the U.S., behind New York, L.A. and San Francisco. (It should also be noted that GroundLink operates in 110 countries throughout the world; London is its largest market in Europe.) “We have experienced 25% yearover-year growth in Chicago in number of rides,” he said. “Everything is automated, everything is mobile driven.”

The PPI is an easy-to-understand alert system that informs the public about the risk of contracting WNV, as well as the steps that should be taken to protect themselves and their families. The PPI widget provides residents with a real-time snapshot of WNV activity in the county, which ranges from zero to three, zero meaning there is no risk and three announcing a high level of risk with multiple confirmed human cases of WNV. Many community partners including townships, municipalities and park districts, also have the PPI widget posted to their homepages. DUPAGE COUNTY—The DuPage County Health Department reports that the number of mosquito batches testing positive for the presence of West Nile virus (WNV) in DuPage County is increasing and that consequently increases the risk that residents might contract WNV. The Health Department advises residents to be cautious and avoid mosquito bites, but they should not curtail outdoor activities. The weather forecast for the next week includes warmer temperatures and that also increases the potential for the increased presence of WNV. No human cases of WNV disease have been reported in DuPage County this year. The Health Department’s Personal Protection Index (PPI) widget has been raised from one

contains everything. You text the company when you have retrieved your luggage and, after dispatching a vehicle, you receive on the app the name and a photo of the driver, a photo of the vehicle, the make, model, etc. You even receive their appropriate mapping via GPS, so there’s no worry that a shady driver might take you out of your way in an unfamiliar city, just to run up the fare.
“In 2003, the company started in New York,” Mooradian said. “It was the first to build and develop the technology to book over the web. We experienced real growth in 2007, so we took our web technology and applied it to a smartphone app. We own all the technology to book a ride, send receipts customers, receive comment cards, track your driver and much more.”
The company doesn’t own cars, individual independent drivers use their own cars – their personal cars for short rides, or those with limousines for airport runs and other services. That’s how the other companies save a great deal of money. But GroundLink takes it a step further. “The company provides a technology enabler which also provides traditional black-car

services – to and from the airports, downtown to a concert, to corporate meetings – the big difference is that we’re scheduled in advance,” he said. “In some markets, we have ‘ondemand’ services, but not yet in Chicago.” The company is primarily focused on business-to-business or B2B clients – catering to corporation most of all. “We have sales people in Washington, Dallas, New York, and other markets,” he said. “Our sales reps are scattered through a good majority of cities, where the focus is selling to corporations, to become their provider of black car services.” The company takes more steps than other companies in checking a drivers’ background, making sure insurance is adequate and up-to-date. “We expect our drivers to have $1 million general liability insurance on their own, but also we have a $6 million umbrella insurance policy on top of that,” he said. thorough way of vetting drivers for safety and for insurance coverage. GroundLink is committed to giving its customers the best possible experience. Its technology can even advise if flights are late. GroundLink is the only limo service that offers an on-time guarantee – yes, you read that right. “We are the only black car service provider that offers an on-time guarantee,” Mooridian said. “If a driver is more than five minutes late, we give a refund of up to $75 toward a future trip.” If you have a concern that requires immediate attention, GroundLink also has a hot line. “If you really need to talk someone, you can call 24/7 and get a real person!” Mooridian said. It’s the wave of the future, he assures. “It’s a matter of convenience. The ‘millennials’ all want to use their phones, so it only makes sense to follow what is most appealing to them.”
