Public Community College reform measure signed into law Sen. Tom Cullerton: ‘There is still work to do’ VILLA PARK — Currently, Illinois college students are paying more than double the national average to attend a public four-year university, university administrators are receiving lavish country club memberships and inflated housing and travel allowances
on top of their quarter of a million dollar salaries. To combat this problem, House Bill 3593, supported by State Senator Tom Cullerton (D-Villa Park), was signed into law recently. This new law will help reform the misuse and abuse of taxpayer dollars
at public community colleges in Illinois. “This is a step in the right direction,” Cullerton said. “However, there still needs to be additional protections in place to shed some sunshine on the use state funds at public higher education institutions.
Recent events at the University of Illinois have shown the obvious need for commonsense reform to guarantee tax payer dollars are spent wisely.” House Bill 3593 amends the Public Community College Act with a series of reforms to address the College of DuPage’s extravagant severance package given to its outgoing President
Robert Brueder. This new law includes three major reforms: • First, all new severance agreements for outgoing community college employees are limited to one year and benefits. • Second, public notice is

VILLA PARK — A roadside safety check will be conducted by the Villa Park Police Department during the dates of October 23, November 14 and 20. The safety checks are being conducted to promote the safety and well-being of the motoring public and to provide a deterrent for those who might violate Illinois Vehicle Code statutes and village ordinances. Plans have been established to conduct the checks at locations and during those hours, which will provide the maximum opportunity for the detection and apprehension of motorists who drive under the influence of alcohol or other substances. The roadside safety checks will be conducted according to the guidelines set forth by the courts.

Cullerton, State Reps join fight in local community
VILLA PARK — To continue to look for ways to make our communities safe, State Senator Tom Cullerton (D-Villa Park) recently hosted a community women’s empowerment summit. Cullerton partnered with community organizations, medical experts, local law enforcement agencies, as well as State Representatives Deb Conroy and Kathleen Willis and the Attorney General’s office to present a comprehensive discussion on how the community can work together to combat sexual assault on campus and at home. “Community dialogue is essential to ending violence against women,” Cullerton said. “Our goal was to work together to ensure students and residents are aware of available resources and give them the opportunity to voice their concerns and share input on how we can work together to address this serious issue.” To combat campus sexual violence, House Bill 821, sponsored by Cullerton this year, provides a roadmap to existing federal requirements and sets standards to prevent and respond to sexual violence.
“Our top priority is to end campus assault,” he said. “However, if an attack occurs, there needs to be clear and con-
cise standards to give victims a comprehensive path to report crimes and be notified of their rights.”
Cullerton looks forward to holding additional summits to work toward ending violence in all local area communities.

State Rep. Deb Conroy (D-Villa Park) hosted a town hall meeting to meet with her constituents, provide them with a legislative update, and answer their questions on Wednesday. “Our state is facing a financial crisis, and people are concerned about how the lack of a state budget will affect them,” she said. “I want to give my constituents every opportunity to understand what is happening in Springfield and answer any questions that they have. Remaining open and accessible has been a top priority of mine, and it is especially important right now.”

This involves research into player injuries, team matchups, home field advantage and of course who has the best looking tight end. I read the predictions and checked the stats and played my players accordingly. The process was detailed and scientific. I was at the top of my game and ready to put it through the goalposts. Then game day hit like a linebacker and I got clobbered like a scrambling quarterback. Apparently getting your butt kicked in fantasy football is easier than the odds lead you to believe. Either that or I’m just talented that way. For a few weeks now my mainliners have produced squat while the guys sitting on my bench put in outstanding performances. Perhaps this whole fantasy thing is more of a nightmare than I thought.
State Representative to host community recycling event
NORTHLAKE — In order to help area residents remove clutter from their homes and continue to push for environmentally responsible disposal of unwanted items, State Rep. Kathleen Willis (D-Addison) will be hosting a free Community Recycling Extravaganza on Saturday, October 17 from 9 a.m. to 12 noon in the parking lot of her constituent services office, located at 112 N. Wolf — Kathleen Willis Road in Northlake. State Rep. “I have spoken with many people in our community who have items that can be recycled, but are not sure where to take them,” she said. “I am hosting the event with the hope that residents will take advantage of this opportunity to recycle a wide variety of items.” There will be numerous organizations on site collecting items including batteries, electronics, prescription drugs, eyeglasses, and various other recyclable items. In addition to the recycling available at the event, residents will be able to bring up to five boxes of paperwork to be shredded free of charge, to protect them from identity theft. Residents with questions about which items are eligible to be recycled are invited to contact Willis’ constituent service office at (708) 562-6970, or by e-mail at repwillis77@gmail.com. “Identity theft is a big issue, and I am glad that I can offer free paper shredding at this event,” said Willis. “Hopefully people can use this opportunity to gain some peace of mind and protect their personal information.”

It also changes the way you watch the game. Not that I’ve ever been much of a watcher, but I assume if I had been I’d pick a specific team and root for a “W.” In fantasy football, it isn’t important which team wins the game, but whether your tight end catches a touchdown pass from your quarterback with your kicker successfully making the extra point. It’s a possibility you could have a running back on one team and a wide receiver playing against your running back on the other. Knowing which team to cheer for is nearly impossible. Besides, none of this has ever been about the game; it’s about the fantasy. Win or lose, I’m just glad I got invited. It’s allowing me the opportunity to spend quality time engaged in sports talk with my guys as well as enjoying an ongoing date with them every Sunday afternoon through at least the first week in February. (Which gives nonsporty types like me a whole month before March Madness brackets become a reality.) As a bonus extra point, I’m happy to report that landing a spot on the couch during game day is no longer a fantasy. That’s a big “W” for me under any league rules. y daughter and I live with a bunch of guys, so it wasn’t much of a surprise when they suggested a family fantasy football league. They are good at thinking up ways to beat us in various competitions – and not watching chick flicks. The fantasy league wasn’t such a bad idea. I figured it would generate a friendly atmosphere of competition and provide a shared sense of engagement during the big games. Plus it might even garner me a spot on the couch on Sunday afternoons. I was all in. We started with the draft. This is where you pick your team, not get ready for war. Since my knowledge of professional football fits comfortably on the tip of a very sharp pencil, I was a little apprehensive. My sons showed me there are apps for that. Our app walked us through the whole fantasy drafting process, gave us a play-by-play rundown of who’s who in football and ranked players according to their estimated fantasy worth and scoring potential. How hard could it be? I picked my roster and was feeling optimistic about my running backs, quarterbacks and couple other backs on my team. As a bonus, I’d scored a good-looking tight end (which

Elaine Zannis prepares for District 2 County Board campaign OAK BROOK — Former two term Oak Brook Village Trustee and local realestate broker Elaine Zannis, a Republican, is gearing up for another potential run for the DuPage County Board’s second district. Necessary for any campaign, Zannis has been routinely raising funds and talking to residents of the second district. “The outpouring of support from local residents is wonderful! It is because of them I am encouraged to run,” she said. As a real-estate broker, Zannis has been a longtime advocate for reducing property taxes for residents while keeping property values high. “A home is a significant investment for any family,” she said. “We must have great schools, strong property val-
ues, and an affordable property tax rate for anyone who looks to build a life in DuPage. I often help many families appeal their property tax rate with their local Township Assessor. This is especially important for senior citizens and long-time residents.” Although there has not been an official announcement of candidacy, spokesman Andrew Edmier from the campaign office said Elaine would be making an announcement “very soon.” The second district for the DuPage County Board includes parts of Downers Grove, Elmhurst, Lombard, Lisle, Oak Brook, Hinsdale, Villa Park, Westmont, Clarendon Hills, Woodridge, and Oakbrook Terrace.
Sen. Cullerton helps suburban job seekers find work VILLA PARK — Walter Conrad showed up to the Odeum Expo Center on Wednesday, September 30, looking for a job. By the time he left, he had three interviews lined up, including one on Thursday. “This was helpful,” said Conrad, one of hundreds who attended the job fair sponsored by State Senator Tom Cullerton (D-Villa Park). “I met with a wide range of employers and even had an on-site interview.” Job seekers from across the suburbs flocked to Cullerton’s annual job fair, which this year featured more than 100 businesses ranging from the DuPage County Health Department to Google Streetview’s 360 Photo Team. “Events like this are essential to link interested businesses with qualified candidates,” Cullerton said. “Let’s put people back to work. Our economy is growing. We have Illinois businesses ready to hire.” Residents who were unable to attend this event are encouraged to reach out to Cullerton’s Villa Park constituent service office at (630) 903-6662 to take advantage of a variety of resources.

visions outlined in Wise’s severance package should never have existed. House Bill 3593 only addresses reforms at the community college level, the measure doesn’t include reforms to public universities. “We have seen enough already,” Cullerton said. “Working families should be able to rely on our state community colleges and universities to use tuition dollars to educate their children, not to dine on the taxpayer’s dime.” House Bill 3593 was signed into law on September 22, 2015 and goes into effect immediately.

Stephaney Cheng named 88’s Best at WBHS for September VILLA PARK — Stephaney Cheng has been named as Willowbrook’s September recipient of 88’s Best recognition for her academic accomplishments. Cheng, a senior, was recognized during the Sept. 28 District 88 Board of Education meeting. A leader within the class of 2016, Cheng has enrolled in the most rigorous courses available at WBHS, including completing 12 Advanced Placement (AP)/college-level courses and a multitude of honors courses. Cheng has maintained a class ranking within the 99th percentile, is an AP Scholar and has earned Honor Roll status each semester of her high school career. She also is President of the school’s National Honor Society, is Secretary of Civitas (the school’s Social Studies Honor Society) and is an inductee of the National English, Math and World Language honor societies. Beyond the classroom, Cheng has been recognized with a Human Relations Award, an Outstanding Student recognition in science and an Outstanding Freshman Award. She also serves as President of Key Club, a Student Ambassador to assist students who transfer to WBHS and a New Beginnings Leader to assist freshmen in the transition to high school. Cheng’s commitment to WBHS is further demonstrated by her participation as a Student Council representative, a Blue Crew Officer and a member of Science Olympiad and Math Team. She also is a member of yearbook, the student newspaper, Varsity Athletic Club, Best Buddies and is Captain of the Girls Soccer Team.
Interested in making a difference, Cheng volunteers her time as a Relay For Life participant, a Freshmen Progress Program mentor, a Feed My Starving Children volunteer and a helper with Kiwanis Peanut Day and numerous WB events such as Open House and Eighth-Grade Transition Parent Nights. “Cheng is one of our best,” said Eastman Tiu, science teacher. “Her work ethic and quality of work is top notch, but her best attribute by far is her contribution to her learning community. In the classroom and small group work, she adds so much to the discussion and leads by example. Having her in class is truly like having another teacher in the room, who can help others understand concepts.” Science teacher Ben Fenske agreed. “I have known Cheng since she was a freshman in my honors biology class,” he said. “At that time, she stood out as one of my very best students. She was then – and is now – a serious, steady student. She could always be counted on to set the standard and lead by example: consistent, thoughtful and mature. But that is not to say she is not without humor or social graces. She has a great, ironic sense of humor and works very well with other students, contributing to our school community in many ways.” Cheng plans to major in biochemistry and pursue a career in the medical profession. She will apply to Johns Hopkins University, Boston University, Washington University in St. Louis and University of Wisconsin-Madison.

UnitedHealthcare publishes joke books for sick children CHICAGO — With the help from Illinois kids, the UnitedHealthcare Children’s Foundation (UHCCF) has collected knockknock jokes and riddles for two new joke books that were scheduled for release on Friday, Oct. 2 on World Smile Day. The joke books not only provide smiles and laughter, but also help local families in need as the proceeds from the books will be used to fund child medical grants. “Little Book - Big Laughs” Riddle Book and “Little Book - Big Laughs” Knock-Knock Book include more than 350 knock-knock jokes and 500 riddles submitted by kids – for kids. The books are ideal for children ages 4 to12, but will be enjoyed by all ages. Since 2007, UHCCF has awarded 10,000 grants valued at over $29 million to children and their families across the United States. Since 2011, $433,000 in medical grants have been awarded to families in Illinois.

Update on gaming proceeds Village has earned more than $236K SPRINGFIELD — In the past 12-month period, Villa Park netted $236.1K and Addison earned $163.3K from its 5% share of NTI, according to Gaming Board reports. In August of 2015, Villa Park netted $20.2K from its 17 licensed houses and Addison earned $16.5K from 14 locations with terminals, Oakbrook Terrace got $10.2K from nine locations and the Bensenville got $1.5K from three locations.
Fitz’s Irish Bulldog in Villa Park, owned and operated by the same family that runs Fitz’s Pub and Fitz’s Spare Keys in Elmhurst, made 35% of its August NTI of $35.6K and has generated $134.5K over the past 12 months, along with a 20% increase in food and beverage sales. There is a 30% tax on the Net Terminal Income (Funds In minus Funds Out), with 25% going directly to the state’s General Fund and 5% given to a municipality. WBHS senior named to Illinois student advisory council VILLA PARK — Willowbrook senior Sally Nijim has been named to the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) Student Advisory Council (SAC). Nijim joins 16 other sophomore, junior and senior high school students from throughout Illinois to form the council. The group convened on Sept. 22 & 23 in Springfield for its first meeting of the 2015-16 school year. Members of the SAC work with ISBE and State Superintendent of Education Tony Smith, Ph.D., providing student perspectives and concerns on the state’s education policies. “I applied to join the council because I want to be a voice for the students in my school and community and advocate for policies and positive changes in the state education and schooling system,” she said. review process Nijim underwent to become a member of the SAC, which included completing an application with two essay questions. She was then selected from the pool of applicants to interview with multiple ISBE Board members.
“Seeing the acceptance letter was quite a shock for me,” she said. “It is a great honor to be part of the council. It will be such an incredible experience to be able to represent Illinois public school students.” Each year, members of the SAC select a topic they research in depth and present to ISBE in the spring. Nijim said her group plans to focus on the topic of teacher evaluations. “It is my hope our research project will eventually aid in influencing legislation passed in the future, so the Illinois education system can continue to enrich the mind of each student,” she said. The SAC will next meet on Nov. 18 and 19 in Springfield. The SAC was established in 1975, and all sophomores, juniors and seniors who attend an Illinois public high school are eligible to apply.

The Willowbrook football team did it on the road again. The Warriors won their third road game of the year, this time a 38-31 triumph over Morton in a West Suburban Conference Gold Division contest in Berwyn. The win moved Willowbrook to 3-3 overall and 2-1 in WSC Gold action.
The Warriors return home Friday at 7:30 p.m. to face Proviso East (1-5) in another WSC Gold game.

We have really focused on our midfield to help out with the defense and mark tightly when teams are in our defensive half of the field.” Another key player for the team has been junior defender Uriel Martinez. “Uriel has been our biggest leader on the team,” said Dini. “He is always in the right place and takes pride in the defense. He is a three-year varsity starter but this is his first year as a defender for us.” Dini said team chemistry has played a major role in the team’s progress. “We have a really good record this season and have battled hard to get to where we are. It hasn’t been easy. We’ve had some key players step up and lead us to where we want to go. The team is
very close and has been gelling well. We have focused this year on mixing it up with our players to keep everything fresh. We spent a practice at Links and Tees and played foot golf. The players really enjoyed this and Links and Tees was very accommodating to us to allow for this to happen. We brought 40 players there to participate.” Addison Trail played at Leyden in a WSC Gold game earlier this week. The Blazers face Downers Grove South on the road Oct. 13 and then play defending state champion Hinsdale Central two days later in Hinsdale. “All three of these teams (Leyden, Downers South and Hinsdale Central) are in the Top 25,” said Dini. “It will be really interesting to see how we match up against some very tough competition.”

IC Catholic Prep boys soccer team winding up regular season Ramirez, Simmons score goals in DeLaSalle game By Mike Miazga Correspondent
The IC Catholic Prep boys soccer team’s inaugural regular season is just about in the books. The Knights, in their first year as a varsity program, dropped a 5-2 game to Chicago DeLaSalle in their penultimate game prior to the start of the state playoffs. “In all our games before we’ve played with a lot of heart,” said IC Catholic Prep coach Javier Andrade. “They know they are improving, but we made some early mistakes that caught us. DeLaSalle is a very skilled team. I’m not disappointed. The program is growing. We are in the developmental stage. The way you learn is by losing and learning from your mistakes. We played pretty well, but not at the level I expect them to play. It was fun to watch us make some good passes, but it also was not fun to watch us make mistakes like we did. We have to keep reminding ourselves that a lot of people on the team haven’t played soccer before or are in the learning stages of it.” Hector Ramirez and Jon Simmons each had a goal for IC Catholic Prep in the loss. Ben Johnson continues to be a bright spot for the Knights in goal. “Our goalie plays well. a physical style. The key is to play a good physical style and not foul anybody.” IC Catholic Prep will play in the MSC Cup crossover series this week against a team from the MSC East Division, likely either Walther Christian or Guerin Prep. Next week the Knights will play in their firstever postseason game at home at Lewis Stadium. “Some people told me before the season that we would get smoked in this first year,” said Andrade. “There has been only one game (St. Francis) where we weren’t competitive. Other than that, I’m very happy. I don’t care about the wins and the losses here. I want to develop good soccer players.”
