Protect yourself and your family with a flu shot! Influenza (“flu”) isn’t anything to mess around with – it can be serious or even deadly for elderly people, newborn babies, and people who have certain chronic illnesses. Help your body fight off the flu this year by getting a flu shot at one of FHN’s flu shot clinics, open to the public at convenient locations across northwest Illinois. If you are an adult under 65 years of age, you will get a quadrivalent vaccine that protects against 4 strains of influenza for $40. If you’re over 65, you will receive a high-dose version of the vaccine ($52). There will be no out-of-pocket expense if you are covered by Medicare Part B (please present Medicare card) or a Medicare HMO accepted by FHN (there’s a list available at each location; covered persons MUST present the Medicare HMO card instead of the Medicare card for the billing process). All immunizations not covered by Medicare or a Medicare HMO must be paid for by cash or check payable to FHN. The prices shown here are only available at these flu shot clinics; other rates may apply in FHN offices. No other insurance coverage can be accepted at these flu shot clinics, and per government regulations, no Medicaid cards can be accepted at these locations. Because of federal guidelines to prevent identity theft, everyone must present a photo ID to receive an immunization. Children can only be immunized if a written prescription from a physician indicating dosage is presented. You should NOT receive a flu shot at any of these clinics if you: • Are allergic to eggs or the flu vaccine • Are ill or have a fever • Have a depressed immune system Please contact your healthcare provider or call FHN toll-free at 1-877-6000-FHN (1-877-600-0346) ext. 945 for assistance in finding a provider if you can’t receive a vaccination due to the above restrictions. For more information, visit www.fhn.org.

Police seek communities help in unsolved robbery LOVES PARK — On Monday, June 8, 2015, after 4 a.m., a white male entered Mobil Mart, 6224 N. Second St., in Loves Park. After purchasing coffee, the man left the store, but returned a short time later and allegedly robbed the store. Any family member loving this man, is also encouraged to contact Loves Park Police Department. They understand that having a loved one, who has hit rock bottom, committing crimes of violence to support a habit, creates terrible anxiety for the person involved, as well as the family. Unfortunately, without being apprehended, many people continue down the path they are already headed down. Suspects of crimes are always considered innocent, unless proven guilty in a court of law.

ou don’t have to read a lot to come off appearing well-read; you can simply read book catalogs. My favorite bookseller is Bas Bleu, a mail-order company (www.basbleu.com) who sends a delightful catalog that is like reading a favorite magazine. Bas Bleu has been around since 1994 and call themselves a “champion of the odd little book.” Bas Bleu translates to French, blue stocking. The tale is told that women several hundred years ago who wore blue stockings had literary aspirations. The editors, who may or may not wear blue stockings today while they work, provide clever descriptions and short reviews of the titles and gifts in their catalog. You can skim and get yourself stocked up with nuggets for your next dinner party conversation. Did you know that the dot above the letter “I” is called a “tittle”? Did you know that Dr. Seuss coined the term “nerd”? Now I do, simply from reading the information about the book “The Weird World of Words.” (A book I just might order.) I feel smart just reading the catalog. Editor Ann Gregory notes that the Words book contains, among other things, “a smattering of hilarious mondegreenes.” If you get my weekly Friday email newsletter (if not, request to be added to the list by writ-
Kelly Simmons COLUMNIST
ing info@kellyepperson.com), you will know that a past Word Nerd featured mondegreenes, which are words that result from the mishearing or misinterpretation of a statement or song lyric. I once had a daily calendar of misheard lyrics. The catalog sucks me in and nearly every page is dogeared for something I want to order. Be it a sweatshirt with a Jane Austen quote, or Charley Harper note cards, or gifty items, there are also off-thebeaten path books that intrigue me. I am resuming my love of fiction, and yet the nonfiction stuff makes me wonder how the authors came up with their fodder (and how they got published.) For example, “Lists of Note” is a compilation of lists jotted by famous folk. We all write lists but never think of reading other people’s. The book contains a photo of the original list along with information giving additional insight. Walt Disney wrote a list of possible names for Snow White’s seven dwarves. Johnny Cash had a daily to do list. #2 was “Kiss June.” Of course I want to know what #1 was. Their great marketing copy
in the catalog doesn’t feel like marketing copy. They are a team of three book lovers who read and review hundreds of books. They compile their faves into their catalog and company. I’ll order the “Lists” book so drop me a line if you want to know what Johnny’s daily to do’s were. Some book titles are simply perfect: “500 Foreign Words and Phrases You Should Know to Sound Smart.” This book even promises how to pronounce those words and phrases. Add that one to my list. Bas Bleu offers a mug with a picture of Mr. Rogers and several of his favorite sayings. That in itself is wonderful. This mug is magic. When you put a hot beverage in your mug, the photo of Mr. Rogers with his suit jacket transforms to Mr. Rogers in his famous cardigan. I want the candles, the magnets, the mugs, and the literary jewels. Did you know that in 1943, Philip Van Doren wrote a short story and mailed it to 200 people as his Christmas card? That story became the beloved classic movie, “It’s a Wonderful Life.” See what you learn from reading a book catalog? If you become a blue stocking, let me know. We can pore over the catalog together. Kelly Epperson Simmons is basking in the joy of reading and writing. Connect at info@ kellyepperson.com and www. kellyepperson.com and PO Box 2324, Loves Park, IL 61131.
