Did you know?

As the Holidays are quickly approaching, and we make our plans of what we will see, do, and who we will spend time with, there is also a time that we reflect on what is truly important in our life. We have all heard, “be thankful that you have your health,” but what is true health anyway? The World Health Organization defines health as, “The state of complete physical, mental, and social well being, and not merely the absence of disease, or infirmity. Health is a dynamic condition resulting from a body’s constant adjustment, and adaptation in response to stresses, and changes in the environment, for maintaining an inner equilibrium called homeostasis.” Gray’s Anatomy states the purpose of the brain and nervous system is to control and coordinate the function of all the organs, all the tissues, and all the systems in the body, and to adapt that person, and that person’s body to the environment around them. As chiropractors, we look for those areas that are disrupting the way the body is designed to function. When this interference is removed, communication between the brain and nerve system normalizes, and there is an increase in function on all levels: physically, mentally, and socially. There is an increase in the body’s ability to fight off illness, to keep healthy, and express vitality. Here’s to Your Best Health!

WE HAVE MOVED TO OUR NEW LOCATION!

As women, we understand the health concerns you face. As moms, we know that your health concerns reach beyond yourself and to your family. As chiropractors, our goal is to help you regain you health so you can get your life back. God Bless,

Dr. Heather & Dr. Laura Freedlund Family Chiropractic

My secret indulgence: an afternoon nap W hat do you do with your free time? If given an extra hour or two on a Saturday afternoon, some people will go out and play a round of golf or tennis. (There’s never time for both.) Others will take a warm bath, curl up with a good book or make a fresh batch of homemade peanut butter cookies. Maybe there’s a good movie or game or “Naked and Afraid” on TV. Some (but not many) will clean out the garage. Each of these options has its own attributes, and I might choose any of them on an unencumbered Saturday, but none would be my first choice. I have a secret indulgence reserved for Saturday afternoons. Sometimes my husband joins me. When I have a moment (or two) I opt for a nap. There, I said it. I am a napper. I love (love, love) taking naps. Some Saturday mornings I wake up early just so I can schedule in a nap. I’m creative that way. I do not readily admit to my nappiness. It might make me appear lazy – sleeping in the middle of the day and all. We live in a society where productivity and action are valued. (Who’s going to clean out the garage if I am on the couch napping?) Still I believe there are inherent benefits to the occasional siesta. I’m not alone. According to the National Sleep Foundation, 85 percent of mammals are polyphasic sleepers. Polyphasic sleepers snooze in short spurts, aka naps. My felines nap all the time. (They don’t call them catnaps for nothing.) If 85 percent of the animal population is doing something there has to be a good reason for it. Napping is a way to avoid predators, get through the day unscathed and stay alive. It’s pretty intelligent, really. I always knew my cats were smarter than me. Animal kingdom aside, many important and influential people throughout history were nappers. Winston Churchill, John

Jill Pertler SLICES OF LIFE

F. Kennedy, Napoleon, Einstein and Thomas Edison all napped – but not together. There are actual books written on the benefits of napping, but why read about the subject when you can take a real nap yourself? Scientific research shows numerous benefits to catching a few ZZZs in the afternoon. A NASA study found that short naps improve performance and alertness. According to the buzz at Buzzfeed, napping can heighten creativity, promote relaxation, enhance memory, brighten mood and lower blood pressure. We’ve all heard the expression, “You snooze you lose.” With naps, this might just be the case. Studies show that sleepy fellows reach for less high-fat, sugary foods than those walking around with bags under their eyes. That’s not all. I saved the best for last. Sleep deprivation dampens sex drive. Nap-

ping reverses the effect. This is exponentiated if you can get your significant other to nap with you. I may sleep on Saturdays, but some are taking napping to new levels – and days of the week. There’s a growing trend that encourages short naps at work. Employers are recognizing the positive benefits of napping and allowing workers to catch a little shut-eye during the lunch hour. Some even provide napping pods and zero gravity chairs to enhance the whole experience. Gentle lighting and vibrations wake employees when it’s time to get back to work. It gives a whole new meaning to the term “sleeping on the job.” I’ve always been a closet napper. Then I did some research for this column and discovered we afternoon sleepers should be loud and proud about our noontime habits. A little afternoon sleep can increase creativity, help you lose weight and boost your sex life. (Ka-ching!) There isn’t any pill anywhere that can do that. Counting sheep after lunch? I say count me in. Jill Pertler is an award-winning syndicated columnist, published playwright and author. Don’t miss a slice; follow the Slices of Life page on Facebook.

The ghosts of Halloween past haunt many I write this the day after Halloween weekend. We attended two parties this month and were tickled at the effort people put into their costumes. Halloween has become a multibillion dollar industry, and I say it’s because we feel an innate need to return to a childlike spirit and playing dress up is fun! Halloween lets people explore their creativity and literally try on a new mask or a new identity for a day. At one party, my Prince and I were charming pirates. At the other we were from the roaring 20s. I had always wanted to be a flapper girl. Having a dress with the swingy fringe, a headdress with a feather, long black gloves and lots of bling is so my thing. Eating lots of candy can be fun too. I enjoy passing out treats to the neighborhood kids. We don’t have many at the current joy house and they loved (seriously) the bags of popcorn I handed out. I delighted in their cuteness and politeness. My Prince and I recalled our

Kelly Simmons COLUMNIST

youth and how our neighborhoods swarmed with kids running from block to block street to street with pillow cases to hold all the sugary loot. Coming home at the end of the night and dumping out all the treats on the floor and surveying the bounteous booty was just as much fun as going from house to house. Some years, we emptied our bags at home and went back out. We had unending rows of houses to hit up in all directions. Finally at the end of the night, after a quick “safety” check from Mom and Dad (and giving Dad all the stuff I didn’t like), we would feast. My sister would count how many items she got. I probably did too. I know I ate all my Tootsie Rolls first. Oh,

nostalgia. Now if I eat a Tootsie Roll, I wonder how I used to be so in love with the hard plastic chews, but I was. Halloween fell out of vogue during my high school years and then returned again in college with parties and costumes. And beer. Then when I became a mommy, getting my boys decked in their store-bought Power Ranger costumes made them happy. Carving pumpkins was fun. (There’s that word again.) Halloween’s “meaning” or history has long faded to black in the US and the focus is simply on simple fun. Candy, decorations, costumes. Americans just want an excuse to play. (We don’t need one, friends.) Of the $7 billion spent on Halloween, $350 MILLION is on costumes for pets. It doesn’t matter if kids are in the house or not, Halloween is now for adults and whoever we can dress up. We Americans like to dress up our houses too. I don’t go for the inflatables, but some décor is creative and lovely.

I’m thinking ahead to next year and planning a party. If it comes to be, you are all invited. In the meantime, hit the candy clearance sales. The stores are already brimming with Christmas so it’s up to you if you switch gears immediately or spend a month on turkeys, pilgrims, and gratitude before turning the décor to St. Nick and the baby Jesus. The ghosts of my Halloween

past are full of smiles and good memories. And probably a residual sugar buzz. If you haven’t dressed up in a costume in years, start thinking on it. You just might enjoy it. I’ll keep you posted on my party date. You’ve got plenty of time. Kelly Epperson Simmons has sparkly pumpkins in her house through Thanksgiving and then the trees come out. Savory Mushroom, Bacon and Gruyere Bread Pudding

Servings: 6 1/2 pound bacon 1/2 pound (about 1/2 loaf) crusty sourdough bread 2 tablespoons olive oil 2 teaspoons chopped fresh thyme leaves 1 1/2 teaspoons kosher salt, divided 1 1/2 teaspoons fresh ground pepper, divided 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder 6 cloves garlic, minced 1 1/2 cups chopped onions 1/2 cup chopped celery 1/2 cup chopped red pepper 1/2 pound sliced button mushrooms 1/4 cup chopped parsley leaves 2 teaspoons dried oregano 4 large eggs 2 cups heavy cream 1 cup (4 ounces) shredded Gruyere cheese, divided Place bacon in freezer to chill. This will help make it easier to chop. Heat oven to 375 F. Cut bread into 1/2-inch cubes and place in large bowl. Drizzle olive oil over bread and sprinkle with thyme, 1/2 teaspoon salt, 1/2 teaspoon pepper and garlic powder. Toss with spatula to coat evenly, then spread bread evenly in one layer onto rimmed baking sheet. No need to clean bowl yet. Bake bread for 20 minutes or until bread starts to turn golden. Remove from oven and lower oven temperature to 350 F. Remove bacon from freezer and finely chop it. In 3 1/2-quart oven-proof stovetop casserole pan, cook bacon over mediumhigh heat until crispy. Use slotted spoon to move bacon pieces to bowl lined with paper towel. Pour bacon grease out, but don’t wipe out pan. Add garlic to pan and cook over medium heat for 30 seconds or until it starts to smell fragrant. Add onions, celery and red pepper and cook for 2 minutes, stirring frequently. Add mushrooms and cook until all vegetables are soft, about 5 more minutes. Season with remaining salt and pepper. Pour toasted bread into original large bowl and add vegetables and cooked bacon. Add parsley leaves and dried oregano, and mix together with large spatula. In medium bowl, whisk together eggs and cream. Pour over bread and vegetables, add 1/2 the shredded Gruyere cheese and mix with spatula. Pour entire contents back into casserole pan. Sprinkle top of pudding with remaining cheese. Place in oven and bake for 30-35 minutes or until top of bread pudding has turned golden brown and cheese is melted. Serve warm.

Recipe Reimagined

Eat the Love blog author Irvin Lin offers these variations and tips for a winning dish your guests will love: n

Make the bread pudding vegetarian by omitting the bacon, using 1 tablespoon of olive oil to saute the vegetables and adding 1/2 cup of smoked Gouda cheese to the filling. If you can’t find Gruyere cheese, feel free to substitute Jarlsberg or Swiss. To reheat the pudding if you prepare ahead of time, bake for 15 minutes in the oven at 350 F.
