Kiester Hills of the Algona Glacial Moraine have brought people to the community for centuries. Early residents certainly walked up all 1,432 feet of the hills and back down as they arrived and settled in the area. The city of Wells received its name from Mrs. Clark Thompson’s maiden surname Well. It was later changed to its present name Wells. The village was incorporated in March 6, 1871. John Mead Clark preferred farming over business, so in 1855, instead of settling in the nearby village of Albert Lea, he made his home on a beautifully landscaped piece of land surrounded by a grove of oak trees with a lake (Geneva Lake) off to the northeast. Everyone within two square miles began referring to the area as Clark’s Grove, as it is known today.

Albert Lea was certified as the first Blue Zones community in the U.S. Blue Zones Project® is a community-wide well-being initiative that helps make healthy choices easier for everyone in Albert Lea and Freeborn County. When our entire community participates, small changes contribute huge benefits for all of us: Lowered healthcare costs, improved productivity, and a higher quality of life.
While many traditional health initiatives focus on diet and exercise programs, we focus on changing our community’s culture and environment so that individuals are nudged into making healthy choices. By optimizing the places that we live, work and play, we can make the healthy choices the easy choices so we naturally adopt healthy behaviors and have the opportunity to LIVE LONGER, BETTER®.
