Star Body Works Serving the Rogue Valley since 1948, Star Body Works has grown to four locations in two counties. A collision repair service, their goal is to bring vehicles to pre-accident condition, said Mark Lamensdorf, the owner since 1989. According to Lamensdorf, each location is equipped with state-of-the-art equipment and staffed by I-CAR and ASE-certified technicians. Star Body Works is certified by many manufacturers and is a preferred provider for most auto insurers, he added. Being part of the community means giving back, said Lamensdorf, so Star Body Works invests in several local nonprofits and causes. “I want to thank the community for all their support and votes, helping us earn this title for the fourth year in a row,” he said. “Because of you, everyone at Star expresses heartfelt gratitude for the support you’ve given us over the years to make us who we are today.”

Caldera Brewery and Restaurant With an ever-growing assortment of breweries around the region, readers found this year’s favorite in a local spot, in business for two decades. Ashland’s Caldera Brewery and Restaurant owner Jim Mills credited customer loyalty to a quality product, variety of beers and not being afraid to take chances on new flavors. Opened in 1997, the Ashland-based brewery was the first craft brewery on the West Coast to brew and craft its own beers. “We’ve got 45 of our own beers on tap at our restaurant, which is unusual,” Mills said. “I’d say our emphasis on diversity of product and not being afraid to take chances on different beers is what brings people back again and again. If you make a quality product, it sells itself. It sounds like a cliché, but it’s true.”

Since 1999, the couple and their team of bakers have enjoyed bringing fresh-made food to the Rogue Valley, Lisa Allen said. The on-site stone mill is still the heart of the freshness that goes into the muffins, breads and cookies, she added. Family-owned and operated since 1989, the Back Porch Bar & Grill (formerly Back Porch BBQ) is located in historic Jacksonville. Blu and Jamie Collins have owned the restaurant since 2013, when they took the reins from Blu’s parents and changed the name to better reflect their menu. The restaurant serves authentic, Texas-style barbecue, steaks, burgers, sandwiches, wraps, salads and more, she explained. “We encourage guests to ‘kick off their boots and stay awhile,’” Collins said. Collins added that the restaurant has a great local following in Jacksonville and throughout the Rogue Valley. The restaurant also has a new food truck, Back Porch Streetside, which serves food at local events and also offers catering services. The truck is currently looking for a weekly spot to serve in Medford. “I want to thank our customers and co-workers, who are like part of our family,” said Collins.

Whether it’s a fabulous burger with a regional beer, the popular happy hour or fine dining complemented by the select wine list, Porters has a plate for every pocketbook, said Rolar Yondorf, co-owner of Porters. “Medford exists today thanks to the railroad,” he said. “The authentically restored Depot is an important landmark that reflects Medford’s railroad heritage.” “It’s a rarity to have an independent locally owned restaurant and bar,” he added. “After 18 successful years in business, the crew at Porters is grateful for such a loyal following. We strive to offer dependable, quality, regional products and service for everything from a casual bite to a special celebration. We are proud of what we continue to do for the local community as well as for visitors to our region.”

For almost four decades, Shoji’s in Medford has hand-prepared lunch and dinner in the unique “Old World” Japanese style of teppanyaki (stir frying on a grill), to capture the full, juicy goodness of fresh, quality ingredients, according to owners John and Karol Cartmill. The highly trained chefs at Shoji’s, the Cartmills explained, to entertain with fun, flair, flames and flashing knives. Customers are wide-eyed in awe when they witness the chefs’ skillful knife work, their humorous antics and the excitement of a flaming volcano of onions, according to John Cartmill. The Cartmills described the restaurants décor as clean, casual and classy. Many of their customers come to Shoji’s to celebrate birthdays, anniversaries or other special occasions.
In a region with countless options for Mexican food, a little family-run place on Medford’s Stewart Avenue stood out with readers. Maria Arias, daughter of owners Sergio and Sara Arias, said it’s likely the authentic recipes and casual atmosphere that lures customers back again and again. Opened in 2013, El Molcajete is named for what has become the restaurant’s bestselling seasoned and grilled menu item. Variations of el molcajete can be found around the valley but Arias said her family’s version is special because of the sauce from the family’s home state of Jalisco. Patrons to the grill are treated to bean dip and chips when seated and sopapillas to end each meal. “I want our customers to know how much we value their opinions and thank them for voting for

Porters Dining at the Depot What is the secret to the great steaks at Porters Dining at the Depot in Medford? According to co-owner Rolar Yondorf, the answer is starting with great beef. “We have worked with the same local purveyor for decades— Bruce Emerson at Cherry Street Meats. He sources the best of the Northwest. Then he extra ages our custom cuts for enhanced tenderness and richer flavor. We are excited to offer prime grade, 30-day dry-aged ribeye, T-bone and porterhouse steaks.” After starting with the best beef, the key is preparation and presentation. “Our broiler chefs work to intensify those flavors with just the right amount of seasoning and chargrilling, along with the desired temperature. The real trick is to consistently execute all of this hundreds of times every week,” Yondorf said. “We thank voters and all our loyal supporters for once again recognizing Porters as the best place for a steak dinner.”

Clay Bustin opened Brotherhood Painting in 2003. “Both of my parents are self-employed, so it was natural for me to be a business owner,” he explained. Brotherhood specializes in exterior painting, but also hangs Christmas lights in the offseason, a service they have provided for six years. “Our team doesn’t just hang lights, we also offer a design consultation, provide the lights, install them, and maintain the lights throughout the season,” said Bustin. They then take the lights down in January and store them. Bustin is proud of the team he has assembled. The company has always kept a positive, friendly and spirited culture, he said, which they extend to their customers. “We want to thank everyone who has supported us,” he said.
