By Mike Hast WEST Rosebud’s Truemans Road Recreational Reserve could become a centre for sports of all sorts and an alternative site for the proposed Southern Peninsula Aquatic Centre. A bold plan has been submitted to the shire council by a consortium of community and conservation groups. The reserve currently is home to football, cricket, netball, bocce, Little Athletics and Peninsula Model Aero Club. New facilities could include a velodrome, lawn bowls greens, hockey fields, soccer ground, multipurpose stadium and function centre. The stadium would be home to basketball, netball, volleyball and cricket as well as martial arts, dancesports and community events. The concept is the brainchild of Friends of Tootgarook Wetland Reserves and has received input and support from eight community and conservation groups and companies. Developing the reserve would also solve an old problem inherited by Mornington Peninsula Shire – rehabilitating the section that was the Shire of Flinders tip. There is a pollution abatement notice issued by the Environment Protection Authority to the shire for the old tip part of the precinct. Jessica Durrant, secretary of Friends of Tootgarook Wetland Reserves, said the all-sports complex, dubbed the

Southern Peninsula Sports Complex, “would encourage positive social interaction among various groups. “Putting the complex near the valuable Tootgarook wetlands would enable it to have pleasing scenery and fresh healthy air, she said. “Easy accessibility can be achieved through a redirected public transport route. “The complex would make it easier for parents whose children attend various activities. “Schools would be able to conduct sporting competitions with ease and state of the art facilities would mean better training for our athletes of the future. “The local economy will be aided with more jobs in what is one of the most disadvantaged areas of Victoria. Ms Durrant said the complex could be developed in stages. There would be a massive boost for health and fitness of residents by creating a central complex of sports facilities. “It would be a great place for the proposed Southern Peninsula Aquatic Centre, which would be better patronised due to its co-location with other sporting facilities. A centre for wetlands research and education also could be created in the precinct, Ms Durrant said. Walking and running paths and landscaping using native trees and shrubs would surround the complex.

An Ode to Modestine, scooter By Fran Henke “There was something neat and high bred, a Quakerish elegance about the rogue that hit my fancy on the spot. She passed into my service for the consideration of 65 francs and a bottle of brandy.” Robert Louis Stevenson baptised the donkey on which he toured southern France in 1878 “Modestine”. THIS oddball information came from a dear friend in Sydney on hearing I had been forced to resort to a scooter to “walk” my dogs. In the letter, my friend, with whom I grew up in newspapers, sent an “embellishment” that she wangled free from Deus Ex Machina, a very expensive motorcycle emporium in Sydney. The concept of deus ex machina was also new to me. Before applying the sticker to Modestine, I looked it up: A deus ex machina (god out of the machine) is a plot device whereby a seemingly unsolvable problem is suddenly and abruptly solved with the contrived and unexpected intervention of some new event, character, ability or object. Thus my red scooter, as secondhand as was Stevenson’s donkey, became known as “Modestine”. Modestine was the intervention to my steadily increasing daily problem of going walkies (that word, signal for excitement in every dog owner’s home). The Pride Victory 4 (aka Modestine) came to me after research at WesternPort Mobility, which has a range of machines, secondhand, owners moved onwards and upwards, cost from $1700 for a three-wheeler to $3000 and more for four. I was drawn to a wicked threewheeler dressed up to look like a Harley-Davidson, but the practicalities were remote of driving that plus controlling two wilful dogs. Took the boys to the mower/mobility HQ to try them out first (thank you, Ray). No point in buying a scooter to solve a problem to find it doesn’t. Raji, who dislikes bicycles (plus men in jeans), behaved pretty well. Kabir, the smaller Tibetan spaniel cross, took to it like a diminutive husky. Felt a bit teary. Having once been the proud (elderly) owner of a sports car, this was an emotional transition. An expert Cribby friend shepherded the decision. We realised four wheels were essential for safety given the absence of footpaths in our area of Old Tyabb. A “supermarket” scooter was not going to do the job, as much as I wanted to appear insignificant.

Taken for a ride: Fran Henke and friends try out the new “walkies” machine.

Went home to think about that and the cost. Then another of the dogs’ friends, Ben Loois, came to say he’d extracted and polished his late father’s scooter. It was waiting in his driveway for appraisal. This was a neat red scooter, 10 years old. The chair was comfortable and we were able to adjust it to suit my needs. Done. We loaded the demountable sections into the back of my car. After 10 years of sitting in a garage, it needed new batteries and the tyres checking. Went online and found that 14psi was needed. Mick Doherty, our neighbour, had a portable air compressor so the tyres were inflated for action. Seeing this would be a valuable accessory, I bought one ($54) to keep in the car. Then I was ordered to have a flag. No way! I was not going to potter round the streets like a disaster with an orange flag. Argument: Essential. No.

Then a Facebook friend suggested a Tibetan prayer flag for the mast instead of the orange plastic job. This seemed a reasonable compromise ($5 for the prayer flag). So after numerous inquiries around Hastings, found the bicycle shop sold safety flags ($19). The mast was too tall for my liking. So while the rear vision mirror was being fixed by the same kind Mick, I “pruned” the mast by a foot. He offered to fit the flag too. What happened to the flag? It’s too short, he said. Cut this bit off, I said proudly, attaching the orange Tibetan cloth depicting the Goddess riding her tiger. “Fran,” said Mick firmly. “There is men’s work and there is women’s work. This was men’s work.” Maybe so, but this was my compromise. I’d already been aware of “the looks”. People in wheelchairs get them. It’s hard for folk to look beyond the wheels to the person.

Driving round the streets on Modestine was such a relief. Movement without hurting, though not without challenges. Day one we wrapped Raji’s lead around the back axle. While he stood trapped, I took Kabir into a nearby house to ask for help. There was a party on, so three strong men were available to tip Modestine on her side and undo the lead while I held the dog. Thank you! We’re getting better at it now. Other dogs or cyclists can present potential chaos, but oncoming motorists have been patient so far. We don’t feel safe in strong wind and we don’t go out in wet conditions (electricity and water not ideal companions). On the controls I’ve learnt to dial up “hare” to get her up hills, “tortoise” to navigate the gate and kerbs. We bought a barbecue cover at $16 to protect Modestine from the rain in her woodshed (purpose rebuild courtesy of Mick). Custom-made covers would have cost a bundle. VicRoads has a booklet of advice on “motorised devices” that must have a maximum speed of 10km/h and may only be used by people who have difficulty in walking. The checklist before each trip recommends:  Ensure the batteries are fully charged.  Is the seat locked?  Are you dressed in light coloured clothing? (Given slow pace, wear a hat against the sun).  Take a mobile phone.  Insurance – we included Modestine with the car’s RACV Roadside Assistance for an extra $44 a year.  Carry identification (for me, my polio medical alert card, too).  Ensure shopping items don’t upset the balance or get in the way of controls. Out and about:  Avoid uneven surfaces and tackle curbs front-on not at an angle.  Take turns slowly (tortoise).  Choose safe crossing points; avoid roundabouts.  Ensure eye contact with motorists – have they seen you?  Tram and train tracks are traps for small wheels.  Use mirrors constantly to check for pedestrians, bikes and cars.  When stopping, turn off motor and don’t park on slopes. “She was patient, elegant in form, the colour of an ideal mouse, and inimitably small. Her faults were those of her race and sex; her virtues were her own.” – Robert Louis Stevenson, 1878.

Health officer’s mushroom warning THE annual poison mushroom warning has been issued by state health officer Dr Michael Ackland. He said autumn conditions had created ideal growing conditions for poisonous mushrooms. “People should avoid gathering wild mushrooms due to the risk of collecting poisonous varieties that look similar to edible varieties.” Two of the state’s most dangerous are the death cap fungus, Amanita phalloides and the yellow

Dromana’s barbies for the masses

stamina and reliability? “They get one year’s use in a month. The ones we’re doing now have been going three months and they’re still chugging along. “It’s accelerated testing. The real world testing is done on the Dromana foreshore. Just about everything has been tested – there’s nothing like being in the public domain.” And just to show that Dromana is the spiritual home of the Christie barbecues, one coin-operated unit remains. to Zurich in Switzerland where authorities were trying to stop the use of small, portable barbecues heated by disposable charcoal. One barbecue installed in a park in Hamburg, Germany, had saved 600 kilograms of ash being dumped as well as improving air quality. “Overseas visitors are amazed when they see that our councils provide free barbecues. “We see ourselves as a market leader in these types of outdoor barbecues while for other manufacturers these are just a sideline.” Christie barbecues utilise some parts made overseas, mainly because they are not available in Australia, but the metal fabrication is done in Dandenong. And the need to test a barbecue’s

pre-heat and then pour on a glass of cold water.” “Others tend to follow our lead, so part of the challenge is to keep ahead with our development.” This extends to making packaging easily transportable and barbecues that can be quickly assembled. Christie’s barbecues are exported to New Zealand, Singapore, United Arab Emirates and most of Europe. The global financial crisis put a stop to most exports in 2008, but by the beginning of this year inquiries were “picking up”. “Public money dried up overseas, Australia doesn’t realise how lucky we were,” Christie says. Christies has seen steady growth, and now has a staff of 23. There are five reps on the road, knocking on doors, bidding for tenders and “making relationships”. Christie says his company has “set the de facto standard” for outdoor, free barbecues, making them too high for youngsters to touch the hot plate and a six second safety delay on the operating button. Pre-heating at a temperature recommended by microbiologists ensures hygiene on hot plates that attract birds and animals when no one is around. “Pre-heating at over 100 degrees centigrade for more than four minutes kills most organisms that could hurt people. By Keith Platt DAVID Christie fired up a couple of barbecues before Christmas, and they were still running hot in January. But unlike most blokes who light up and forget, he didn’t run out of gas or cop a roasting from his wife or kids. Taking barbecues to the limits of their use is Christie’s business. In fact, D A Christie Pty Ltd is a family business started 47 years ago by his father (also David, known as Sandy) that supplies most of the free barbecues found on foreshores and public land throughout Australia. Many of the barbecues made in the family’s Dromana factory are located in isolated areas, so dependability, durability and hygiene are essential. The two barbecues fired up before Christmas were advances on the current models of gas and electric units. The barbecues originally developed and sold by Christies were coin-operated, but damage by vandals trying to retrieve “gold” coins persuaded public authorities that it was far cheaper to make them available without charge. The genesis of Christie’s entry into the barbecue market came when David Christie senior, an electrical engineer working from his Dromana home, was asked to design a coin operation for a barbecue on the foreshore. Impetus for sealed barbecues came from total fire ban days and Christies “really hit the market” in 1974 after approaching municipal councils and national parks managers. The first of their barbecues were installed at Mentone and Parkdale. The business now has three generations of Christies on its staff, with David Christie as managing director, his wife Adele sales manager and son Alex customer relations coordinator. Merle Christie, David’s mother, is company secretary and on the board of directors. The brick and stone barbecues have now made way for ones made of extruded aluminium with compressed fibre cement panels, topped with stainless-steel benches and cooking areas. The company has “dabbled” in domestic barbecues but returned to its niche “because we can’t compete with Asia and China”, David Christie says. The company has sold more than 40,000 barbecues, with about 80 per cent going to the Australian market. “It’s not a very big market, with about 2500 being sold here a year,” Christie says. “And they have a 10year service life.” He says there are a few cheaper brands marketed in Australia but they offer little follow-up support.

COMMENT

Councillors, public deserve better COMMENT

By David Harrison AS expected, the shire report to councillors on recording meetings found utterly nothing to recommend the idea. But Tuesday 13 March was an unlucky day for the shire executive – councillors resoundingly rejected the report, nine votes to one, as it deserved, not only instructing officers to record council meetings, but insisting that the public was entitled to record them as well. (Cr Bill Goodrem was on leave.) Well, not all meetings. But the unchallengeable logic is that recording must now be extended to all public meetings of councillors – including special and development assessment meetings. The lone dissenting voter? Cr David Gibb. He feared a rash of defamation actions. I am one of the many who believe recording will make for a better council and an even remoter likelihood of defamatory statements in the chamber. It was a fitting result – a breakthrough in councillor thinking in this election year, with its new multi-member ward structure – bringing the shire to the reality of modern councillor– public interaction. Shire bureaucrats might call it openness and transparency if they didn’t loathe the idea. Back now to the report, close examination of which reveals much about the thinking of some shire bureaucrats and how they see their role in council decision-making.

It is the second report in recent times of this malodorous sort. The other detailed the shire’s position on the electoral review that gave us multi-member wards. It was heavily and rightly criticised as one-sided. It should be stated clearly here that the vast bulk of shire reports are everything they should be. It is usually when politics or pet projects intrude that reports fall below reasonable standard. The two reports mentioned fall into this category. They are far from what one would expect from a public service whose role and responsibility is to provide disinterested and professional advice to its legislators so they can make considered and wellinformed decisions. Both reports were stridently partisan in pursuit of shire bureaucrats’ (and, in the case of the electoral review report, some councillors’) preferred outcome – the status quo, offering few or no proper alternative views or options, based on little or no research; long on spin and short on facts. Reports of this type, consciously or unconsciously, effectively put shire bureaucrats into the role of political players rather than neutral advisers. Watch this process continue as the mainly bureaucrat-driven push for the foreshore aquatic centre at Rosebud unfolds. The contentious pool issue even made an appearance at the council meeting, when a shire officer began taking part in a debate, to be accused (with infinite irony) by a councillor of “debating. The more appropriate

response would have been to tell the officer: “Butt out – you’re not a councillor.â€? Noel Buck’s report on recording, so properly and perfunctorily hurled into the rubbish bin by all but one councillor, received not one mention by councillors in their remarks about the benefits of recording – for some of them, it was a turnaround not unlike that of Saul on the road to Damascus*. They could not have quoted from the report on any benefits of recording, such as confirming minutes, or a legacy for historians: according to the report, there were none. Its aim was to urge councillors to take a giant leap into the past, where apparently many shire staff and one councillor feel safe from the menacing bugaboos of the night and the Spawn of Beelzebub who stalk council meetings with – questions. It recommended a whopping $2440.80 fine for anyone caught illicitly recording then publishing material from a council meeting. It was full of “couldsâ€? and “maysâ€?. ď Ž “Council and councillors may be liable for defamatory statements ...â€? ď Ž “There could also be privacy issues...â€? ď Ž “...the person may have violated the copyright owner’s exclusive right...â€? Should not the report have resolved these coulds and mays? Aren’t reports designed to research issues and eliminate doubts where possible? As to research, here it was: “Research of council websites does not reveal large numbers of

councils audio recording and distributing the proceedings of council meetings. That’s it. That was the research – 20 words. Elsewhere, mention of only one of Victoria’s 79 councils – Frankston. No mention of Greater Dandenong and Wellington Shire, which broadcast meetings live on websites, or councils that put audio recordings online, for the convenience of ratepayers who can’t get to meetings. Wellington even archives its video recordings for posterity, for heaven’s sake! The report listed what it claimed were the perils of recording: defamation, infringement of copyright, breach of privacy. These “perils already exist, and will continue to exist. Defamation is in the hands of the speaker. It exists with or without wide dissemination. It is a feeble argument against recording. As for copyright, it was blatant nonsense for the report to suggest that reading an extract of a document could attract a lawsuit. It’s called “fair dealing by the Australian Copyright Council; also known as fair use. (For detailed information, go to www. copyright.org.au and download “Fair Dealing: What Can I Use Without Permission.) Privacy? The “disclosure of personal information argument was basically that “the names of the people asking questions are disclosed and [would be] published to a wider audience. The phone book is chockablock with such privacy breaches. Also, the council has the option of

going into camera to deal with sensitive information – and does so on a regular basis, using section 89(2) of the Local Government Act 1989. Having proposed these changes, and more – few if any of which served the public’s interest but very much favoured the shire bureaucracy – the report states ingenuously: “No person involved in the preparation of this report has a direct or indirect interest requiring disclosure. Oh, please! The 2011 VEC report and now this recording report reflect poorly on senior shire staff, all the way to the top. They call into question the role some staff think they play, or assume they are entitled to play, or itch to play, in the life of the shire. They show an ignorance of, or indifference to, the bedrock democratic principle of the separation of powers – “the act of vesting the legislative, executive, and judicial powers of government in separate bodies. Joh BjelkePetersen had no idea what they were, but that was Queensland in the bad old days. Some senior shire staff, and perhaps the councillors who employ them, may need a refresher course in this ruling principle, and the sooner the better. * The conversion of Paul the Apostle (known as Saul in Latin texts) saw him cease persecuting early Christians and become a follower of Jesus around AD 33–36. The phrases Pauline conversion, Damascene conversion, and road to Damascus refer to this event.

Southern Peninsula News 17 April 2012

THE Emu has just returned from his annual circumambulation of the Mornington Peninsula, taking fond leave of his bride on the eve of Holy Friday in a clockwise direction and returning four evenings later – a journey made most comfortable by the mattresses distributed as regular as caravanserai along the shire roadsides. Not only was much of this bedding in good nick, it was often accompanied by TVs, although power points were lacking. But Emu was weary by dusk and inclined to slumber, and nowanights free-to-air TV is mainly rubbish anyway. As well as mattresses, Emu found many black plastic bags on the roadside containing foodstuffs, assorted pre-loved household items and a few interesting shiny trinkets that have since appealed greatly to Mrs Emu. He remembered the shire in his prayers each night for organising this providence for peripatetic pilgrims. Wonderful that Besgrove St (shire HQ) would encourage folk to help tourists with al fresco accommodation and tasty titbits along the highways, and more so in the byways. But Emu’s most precious find was a discarded handwritten sermon, a crumpled and tattered Easter epistle of great power and insight, speaking ecstatically of the moon and sombrely of the wicked persecution that has occurred under its glow through the millennia. Apparently this was a draft, rejected in frustration by its author, possibly seeking a purer form of words to convey his (or her) message. But the words had a spooky relevance to the right here and right now, with references to those engaged in sacred public service being attacked for doing what they believed in, toiling for their communities under “the near full Waking Moon ... the significance being that Easter is always held on the first full moon in April”. The pedantic Emu checked this and found the author somewhat mistaken – either that or an Orthodox church adherent who didn’t pay attention at Sunday school. Under the Julian calendar, Orthodox Easter varies from 4 April to 8 May. Under the more widely used Gregorian calendar, it can fall from 22 March to 25 April. Easter Sunday has fallen in Emu’s Gregorian lifetime in March on seven occasions (in 1986, 1989, 1991, 1997, 2002, 2005 and 2008) and will fall on 31 March next year and 27 March in 2016. But this is a trifling detail in the broad and inspiring flow of the sermon. Even Shakespeare made the odd factual error. The grand eulogy put Emu in mind of councillors and especially shire officials who toil tirelessly and for almost no reward (proportionate to their gargantuan talents) for the public good.

The anonymous sermoniser clearly is a fellow traveller with Emu in his/her solicitous regard for these unpraised – nay! often derided – toilers, as well as in his near-pagan devotion to the moon. The sermon describes the mysterious silver orb in soaring flights of prose as the “full Seed Moon”, the “Full Fish Moon”, the “Pink Moon”, the “Sprouting Grass Moon”, the “Egg Moon” and the “Paschal (Easter) Moon”. The scribe’s command of the language made, as The Bard once put it, “each particular feather on Emu’s neck to stand on end, like quills upon the fretful porpentine”. But, ah, the mood suddenly changed. The sermon was directed at a particular sinner – it was a rare personal sermon. “Consider how you regularly and often treat people with contempt,” the sinner is admonished, somewhat tautologically, “how you persecute people using the media, while at the same time failing to disclose your own contemptuous behaviour! How you play the man and not the ball!” Homely and distinctly Australian, that. It reminded Emu of Acts 9, read to him by Mrs Emu during her biblical period, with its reference to heavenly light: “... [S]uddenly there shined round about him a light from heaven,” says the King James version. “And he fell to the earth, and heard a voice saying unto him, ‘Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou me?’ “And he said, ‘Who art thou, Lord?’” A redundant question, really, considering Saul knew jolly well who was ticking him off. But not a point he ever raised with the spouse when she was ablaze with the Glory. “And the Lord said, ‘I am Jesus whom thou persecutest: it is hard for thee to kick against the pr*cks’.” And there, in a pungent sentence, is the nub of the sermoniser’s admonition. Not pretty language, in fact undeniably crude, but a forceful and modern way of cutting directly to the truth. The pr*cks indeed need to be kicked, and the epistiliser – if Emu may be granted the liberty of creating a word – has donned the steel-capped boots and is swinging the hooves good and hard. They rightly expresses concern to the sinner that “many Bible followers forget what that (Easter) story says and means, while munching on their overpriced and unhealthy chocolate and hot cross buns. Isn’t gluttony one of the sins?” Indeed it is! Along with wrath, greed, sloth, pride, lust and envy.

Emu bows his head contritely, having just polished off the remains of a burger and most of a bucket of chips he found in a black plastic bag. Greed and gluttony: two deadly sins in one meal. There’ll be hell to pay for that, digestion-wise. With a discreet belch, muffled by a weary wing, Emu tucked the crumpled epistle under his roadside mattress beside the remaining chips, both to be finished in the morning. It was too dark to read. He lay back and gazed up at what he would now always think of as the Paschal Moon, wondering whether the sermoniser knew of Paschal Canice Mooney, the Irish Fianna Fail politician, journalist and broadcaster. Was Mooney known in the Oireachtas (the Irish Parliament) as Mooney the Looney, Emu wondered, for his strong interest in country music stars on both sides of the Atlantic? Had he ever heard of David Gordon “Slim Dusty” Kirkpatrick? Was the sermon’s author fully appreciated by their colleagues? Questions, always questions, to which he would never know the answers. He drowsed off into the lunar ether with Mrs Emu’s favourite rural aria, Stand By Your Emu, shimmering in his ears.

Mad about saffron UNRELIABLE word reaches Chez Emu of a new food store opening soon somewhere on the Mornington Peninsula, possibly in Hastings. Mrs Emu, who brought the gossip home, is most intrigued, having gone through an eastern mysticism stage ranging from Afghanistan through Pakistan, India and Tibet, all the way to Japan. It is an era Emu had long forgotten, when everything eaten in Emoh Emu was saffron-flavoured, all cloth goods had to be saffron coloured and the abode reeked like an Oriental bazaar. “I’m told it will be called the Deli Lama.” She was whispering, as though spies abounded in the neighbourhood and she was imparting a secret. “It will specialise in Tibetan takeaway, I’m told. “Isn’t that clever? The ‘Deli Lama’. You know – Deli-Dalai. The Dalai Lama, the Tibetan leader in exile. What a good name.” She tittered till her tail feathers susurrated. Emu remembered that sound from their courting days. “He is a Tibetan takeaway, in a way,” she said, labouring the point to a state of near-death. “Maybe he will come and open it for them. I like the way he laughs. Have you ever seen the Pope laughing? Or George Pell?” Emu thinks it’s all a big laugh, a joke by someone who knows of her fascination for powerful men, none of whom have yet reciprocated. In the zone for business

The name says it all

SITUATED on the corner of Lyons and Nelson Streets – a block from Point Nepean Road and the beach – is this prime 732-square metre site. Rezoned Business 1 to aid in the development of a proposed supermarket complex, the property still has a habitable dwelling that could be leased or the home could be made over to accommodate professional offices in line with the current zoning. In the meantime, as a land bank the property holds exceptional value for now or into the future. The exclusive agent recommends any queries on rezoning the site back to residential should be directed to Mornington Peninsula Shire Council.

IT is refreshing to see a good old milk bar still providing a service to a town. For more than 40 years, this thriving small business has been the cornerstone of the Tootgarook and neighbouring community. New owners would benefit from excellent lease terms and very cheap rent. The owner is willing to offer the business on a trial basis.

Blue-ribbon commercial site FORMERLY known as Potts General Store, this Tyabb landmark is a significant part of the town’s history. Offered for sale for only the second time in 97 years, the site offers a variety of options to the investor or developer. Set on a main arterial road, the site measures 560 square metres and consists of three dwellings, all on one title. This is a rare and very versatile commercial investment in the Western Port region with the eventual Port of Hastings redevelopment and Peninsula Link soon to open.

Address: 1529 Frankston-Flinders Road, TYABB Auction: Friday 18 May at 1pm Agency: L Cooper Real Estate, 1067 Frankston-Flinders Road, Somerville, 5977 7766 Agent: Phil Stone, 0412 226 758

Tip top bottleshop CURRENTLY run under management, this liquor outlet is in a prominent position in the industrial estate of Dromana. The business demonstrates consistent takings and the rent is quite low. Excellent lease terms are on offer.

Probiotics: good guys for digestion By Lyndy Saltmarsh IS your digestive system not feeling quite right? Do you only pay attention to your digestive system when there is a problem? Maybe after you have eaten a large meal and feel bloated? Or perhaps you pay attention to your digestive system only when you have had changes in bowel movements, like diarrhoea or constipation? If this is the case, some digestive support in the form of a probiotic could be useful. Probiotics are “good bacteria that help keep your digestive system in good condition. Digestive problems are often a sign that the bacteria in your digestive system are out of balance, and since your digestive system is the centre of health, it is extremely important that you keep it healthy. Did you know? You have more than 400 species of good bacteria inside your digestive system and they weigh up to three kilograms. In fact, you have more bacteria living inside you than you have cells in your entire body. There are approximately 100 trillion bacteria in your digestive system, the vast majority of which live in your bowel. The balance of all these bacteria is essential for your health and wellbeing. Good bacteria can protect you Your digestive system is in constant contact with the outside environment through the food you eat. In your lifetime, you will eat approximately 22 tonnes of food. This food and the fluids you

consume could be carrying potential pathogens that could make you sick. Good bacteria can protect you from getting sick from these potential pathogens. Balance is essential for health It is essential for health and wellbeing that the bacteria, or flora, in your digestive system is kept in a healthy balance. An imbalance of flora within the digestive system can lead to many common symptoms. How do good bacteria keep you healthy? Good bacteria aid in: ď Žď€ Breaking down food and producing nutrients. ď Žď€ Absorption of nutrients. ď Žď€ Maintaining the motility of the digestive tract, ensuring good bowel motions. ď Žď€ Inhibiting the growth of bad bacteria. ď Žď€ Maintaining a healthy immune system. ď Žď€ Preventing chronic disease Not all probiotics are created equal Maintaining good bowel flora is an important key in maintaining health and wellbeing. Good bowel flora can be achieved by taking probiotics. However, not all probiotics are the same and it is important to use the right probiotic for you. At renewyou wellness centre we will advise the right probiotic for your health needs. The digestive system is the centre of health, so come in today and let us help you to achieve optimal health and wellbeing by restoring your digestive health. Healthy Living Reflux, heartburn and GORD

5982 0035 Curves on the Bay

875 Pt Nepean Road, Rosebud

What is reflux? REFLUX occurs when the acid in your stomach, which helps digest food, rises up into the oesophagus. The stomach has a thick mucous lining that protects it from the acids inside, but the oesophagus doesn’t have this protection. When it is exposed to acid, it may become irritated and painful, leading to symptoms of heartburn. What is heartburn? Heartburn is a burning sensation that rises from the stomach or lower chest towards the throat. It is the most common symptom of reflux and GORD (gastro-oesophageal reflux disease). Up to 20 per cent of adults experience heartburn at least once a week. What is GORD? If you experience heartburn or other symptoms of reflux more than twice a week, or if your heartburn interferes with your daily life, you may have the medical condition GORD. If left untreated, it can lead to other medical problems. Other symptoms of GORD include: excessive burping, regurgitation, sudden filling of the mouth with saliva, difficulty swallowing, sore throat, persistent dry cough and chest pain. If you are experiencing chest pain, contact your doctor immediately. At LAPSurgery Australia we have the latest in Manometry technology to accurately diagnose reflux disease. In our clinics you can be assessed, diagnosed, given dietary advice and, if necessary, offered a surgical solution. A referral from your GP is required for consultation with one of our surgeons regarding High Resolution Manometry (Manoscan). Talk to your GP regarding a care plan for a visit to our dietitian for advice on managing reflux disease or heartburn. For appointments or queries, phone 9760 2777.

Healthy Living

Managing stress STRESS is now a common fixture in our hectic, busy lives. Small amounts of stress that are easily resolved can be beneficial in motivating and helping us achieve our goals. Although chronic or longterm stress affects each of us differently, it ultimately affects the whole body in a negative way and may contribute to many health complaints. Is your health being affected by stress? Do you often feel anxious, worried, depressed, irritable, exhausted, overloaded or forgetful? Do you suffer from stiff or sore muscles or joints, tension headaches, high blood pressure, frequent colds or the flu? Or do you have irritable bowel syndrome, ulcers, an increase or loss of appetite, or worsening of an existing illness or condition? If you answered “yes” to one or more of these questions, your body may be overburdened by stress. Ongoing stress that has not been resolved may result in chronic stress, which can impact body systems such as the cardiovascular system by contributing to high blood pressure. It can also take its toll on your nervous system leading to exhaustion, headaches and insomnia. The digestive and immune system can also be weakened

by stress, making you more susceptible to irritable bowel syndrome, frequent colds and flu. Herbs such as rhodiola, passionflower, zizyphus and magnolia have been traditionally used for reducing stress and anxiety and nervous tension. Magnesium and B vitamins are used in

abundance during times of stress. Magnesium assists in muscle relaxation and calms the nervous system. Find out about our stress less program by calling Karen and Jacqui, Accredited Naturopaths, at Peninsula Herbal Dispensary, 84 Main Street, Mornington. Telephone 5977 0117.

The curse of having a wish come true By Stuart McCullough WHAT’S the worst job in the world? It’s a question that could easily be answered in 2003. Back then, as Coalition forces poured into Iraq, the holder of the unenviable title of “worst job in the world” was Mohammed Saeed al-Sahhaf – the Iraqi Information Minister. This was the man whose job it was to face the international media on a daily basis and try not so much to put a positive spin on things as attempt to convince you that up was down and black was white. Even when presented with overwhelming evidence that there were huge armies advancing towards the capital, he refused to concede, heroically responding: “They are nowhere. They are on the moon. They are snakes in the desert.” Perhaps most famously, he declared in a television interview that there were no tanks in Baghdad. His insistence was somewhat undermined by the tanks that, at that very moment, were driving behind him. That he was monstrously mistaken isn’t really the point; against all odds, Mohammed Saeed al-Sahhaf was still willing to talk things up. Just as all was lost and the city of Baghdad was wholly occupied, he had the task of declaring to the world that Iraq was “winning”. Perhaps inspired by the former Iraqi Information Minister, Charlie Sheen has revitalised this catch phrase. I can’t help but feel partly responsible. When I claimed in 2008 that the television show Two and a Half Men was so bad that it made

cricket seem interesting, I had no idea that it would spark a chain reaction that would culminate in the ruination of this once all-conquering sitcom. My comments seemed to have no discernable impact at the time as the show went from strength to putrid strength and Jon Cryer, Angus T Jones and Charlie Sheen were showered with more cash per episode than I am ever likely to earn my entire adult life. But in an instant everything changed. Just as a pebble dropped into a pond will create a ripple that will eventually crash onto the shore, so too has my withering criticism

finally felled Two and a Half Men. Several things have since become clear – firstly; Charlie Sheen is no more impressed with the jokes on that show than I am. Pitching himself as a veritable comedic alchemist, he claimed to be turning the scripts into “gold”. The second is simply this: Charlie Sheen works better without a script at all. Frankly, the things that fall out of his mouth when given free rein are vastly more entertaining than anything he said as Charlie Harper. Consider the evidence. Previous to his departure from the show, he had referred to himself as a “total bitchin’ rock star from Mars” and cautioned

people from taking the substance “Charlie Sheen”, lest your face should “melt” and your relatives forced to “weep over your exploded body”. Clearly, his true calling is not that of actor but writer, because I defy anyone to come up with anything so defiantly wahooti fandango bizarre as that. Perhaps Mohammed Saeed al-Sahhaf could churn out something to that standard, but I understand that he’s since retired. This isn’t a matter of an occasional outburst but, rather, a sustained campaign beamed directly from planet Sheen. Faced with the prospect of an ignominious sacking, old Charlie fought the good fight by demanding a pay rise. He then announced a tour that was snappily entitled “My Violent Torpedo of Truth/Defeat is Not An Option” tour while variously describing himself as an F-18 and a “warlock” riding a “mercury surfboard”. But as much as he talks a good talk, you can’t escape the feeling that the tanks were driving around behind him even as he spoke. While the ubiquity of Two and a Half Men once drove me to describe Charlie Sheen as a human screensaver, I now feel kind of guilty. It’s an odd thing when you rail against something and then witness its collapse. Had I realised how fragile it was, I’d have probably kept my mouth shut. It seems, though, that I am in the minority. For whenever an article appears on the web pages of our major newspapers, all manner of

people seize the opportunity to post their comments. A healthy percentage of such comments pose the question “who cares?” perhaps overlooking the fact that they obviously cared enough to post a comment. What is it about website commentary that brings out the absolute worst in all of us? It used to be said that if you can’t say something nice, you shouldn’t say anything at all. Were this principle to be applied now, the internet as we currently know it would cease to operate. The title of worst job in the world most recently belonged to the Charlie Sheen’s press agent, who has since resigned. While this is understandable, it makes me feel guiltier still. There’s one thing I can do to right this terrible wrong – I must volunteer to fill-in for Charlie Sheen on Two and a Half Men. Forget Ashton Kutcher. Standing up to the plate to take Charlie’s place is the least I can do. It is clear that I have committed a terrible wrong against Charlie Sheen and it is up to me to hold the fort while he sorts itself out. That said, I’m yet to check my availability. If it turns out that the production schedule clashes with my hectic social life, allow me to suggest Mohammed Saeed al-Sahhaf for the role of Charlie Harper. He knows how to carry on regardless. www.stuartmccullough.com

Performance HOW many times do we hear the phrase “final or farewell tour”? It reminds me of how many comebacks Kiss and John Farnham made. However I was not surprised to hear Barry Humphries announce his “farewell tour” after many years of entertaining the world. Humphries once said he had no intention of being an entertainer and, after dropping out of Melbourne University, started working for EMI. But he has won international recognition for his creation and portrayal of several caricatures from Australian life, in particular Dame Edna Everage, Barry McKenzie and Les Patterson. His first show was A Nice Night’s Entertainment in 1962 followed by A Load of Old Stuffe (1971), A Night with Dame Edna (1978-79) and many others. His comic strip The Adventures of Barry McKenzie appeared in the UK magazine Private Eye from 1963 to 1974. In 1972 Humphries wrote the screenplay for a film of the same name in which he acted the part of Edna Everage. His other film appearances included The Getting of Wisdom (1977) in a “straight” role; Les Patterson Saves the World (1987) which he

co-wrote and acted in; and Marsupials: The Howling III (1987). In 1988 Humphries was named show business personality of the year by the Variety Club of Great Britain and the same year made the television series The Dame Edna Experience. He was named Australian show business ambassador at the 1994 Mo Awards. Humphries will perform a limited number of farewell shows around Australia – Eat Pray Laugh! – including at Her Majesty’s Theatre in Melbourne from 19 July to 2 August with three matinees at 1pm on 25 and 28 July and 1 August. www.daintygroup.com *** THERE is no doubt Australian radio programmers did not give Aussie duo Air Supply the airplay they deserved. Right from their inception, Air Supply was underestimated. Even when their debut single Love and Other Bruises (CBS) hit the charts in 1976, the group was still largely ignored. Graham Russell and Russell Hitchcock (pictured) eventually turned to the tough United States market where they became instant superstars in the early 1980s. They became the only group in the ’80s to that point to have seven singles in the US top 40, making

them millionaires. Lost in Love, Every Woman in the World, All Out of Love and That One That You Love all reached the No 1 spot in the US. Here I Am and Even the Nights are Better made the top 10 while Sweet Dreams made the top 40. Air Supply evolved after Russell met Hitchcock worked together during the Jesus Christ Superstar New Zealand tour. Chrissie Hammond was also a part of the group, but decided to pursue a solo career before coming a part of the duo Cheetah. At the American Music Awards in Los Angeles in 1982, Air Supply was voted best group for 1981. In Australia the duo received the most outstanding achievement at the Countdown Awards. It is an undeniable fact of history that Air Supply ranks with AC/DC, Men At Work, Bee Gees and INXS as one of the five most successful groups to have emerged from the Australian pop/rock scene. On 27 April, EMI Music will release a new “best of” collection featuring 19 tracks from 1976 to 1983. The Ultimate Collection includes all the classic hits with a CD booklet featuring in-

I wonder why young Andrew refers to those he disagrees with as from the left, yet apparently nobody is from the right. No, they be conservatives. I’m with Germaine on Julia’s dress style. On the other hand, Tony looks very chooky also. *** I’VE never been for or against the proposed pool on the Rosebud foreshore, but I do believe a pool close to public transport is a good thing for the southern peninsula, assuming the state government comes to the party. What is far more important to me is that we do not lose Rosebud Memorial Hall. Arts on the Mornington Peninsula is already almost non-existent and anything that worsens this situation is shameful. If this pool idea ever gets off the ground, which is doubtful for mine, will our council include a plan to replace the hall? *** SO many females studying sociology (functioning of human society?) and philosophy (the fundamental nature of knowledge, reality and existence?). Imagine in a few years, this spreading of information. Thousands of females dominating the airwaves, more meet-

ings (they adore a good looong meeting) and an adjoining creche for their lovely little kiddies. This is no major problem for me because, as most of my readers know, I prefer females to males, always assuming there is no hanky panky involved. All one has to do over coffee is say hello, and the females mount the rostrum and continue on, ad infinitum. And I won’t be here when the takeover takes place anyway. But I sometimes worry for my male grandchildren. A big wide world of meetings, committees, conclusions? Am I being sexist? I’m blowed if I know. *** A FRIEND went overseas and on return told me all about the pyramids. It stuck in my mind, the attraction of the pyramids. Why would anyone pay homage to them? All those thousands of slaves working and dying for a madman to skite about himself. Ditto the Great Wall of somewhere. A useless monument to greed, ambition, superstition and vanity. I’m a coffee on the footpath in Paris man; people watcher. *** DO you know people who are on a disability support pension and work for cash? I cannot help wondering about

what effect these people have on the people who are truly entitled to it. I was talking recently, in the nicest possible way, and suggested to one of them: “but theoretically people in your situation are taking money from all of us and not contributing to the needs of everybody”. This, of course, was putting it as lightly as I dared, being a chicken at heart. The answer: “I don’t agree. I pay my taxes every time I buy something and pay my bills.” Sounds fair? *** LAST September the government changed the disability support pension requirements in that those on this pension must show that they are actively seeking employment. The minister (Jenny Macklin) told us that this change was about helping people with disabilities to find work. This is nonsense, of course. Yet another way to chip away at our benefits. They call it “the way forward”, but it’s only their way, which is to save money. Cynical? Probably. *** JAMES Reyne hosts The Lineup at Cube 37 at the Frankston Arts Centre, a musical showcase for up and coming musicians created by The Little Theatre Company. The 25 March concert

A Grain of Salt I WANT my $96 back. After a month of pretend football followed by expert conclusions as a result of the pretend nonsense, we are into another AFL season, but before it starts we get all that palaver for (seemingly) hours of what is likely to happen when it does start. And all those national anthems? Oh woe is me. If the match is televised on 7 and Fox, we get shots of nothing on Fox while 7 commercials are on. A Fox-only match and we get Dermot Brereton’s boring reasons as to why a particular action just happened. Perhaps a quiz as to who will ask the famous “What was going through your mind?” question the most? Or Danny Frawley’s library of adjectives consisting mostly of one word: unbelievable. Press on, Cliffie. Tape everything and watch with the fast forward button in hand. Twelve wins in a season will do it at $8 per win. Delete losses. *** GERMAINE Greer got a mild pasting from the more trenchant feminists for suggesting Mzzz Melody’s jackets were not form fitting; also referring to our Prime Minister’s rear. I thought the bottom line for feminists was equal rights for women, but apparently there are unwritten behavioural rules. Even Herald Sun chil-

Well worth a look and listen. *** THINGS furtherest from my mind: Anything Lord Mayor Robert Doyle says (why is he a lord?); Helen Shapiro singing Not Responsible; where Mark Webber finishes in the latest Formula 1 grand prix race; any sentence ending in “moved on”; any commercial that says “clinical studies prove”. “The one beautiful thing about actors is that they’re so exposed. They’re not being criticised only for their behavior, but for their legs and breasts, for their double chin; their whole being is exposed to criticism. How can you not embrace them and how can you feel anything but gratitude towards these people?” – Elia Kazan. Byee. cliffie9@bigpond.com

Doing it tough in the bush IT’S tough times in the bush for indigenous painters as a result of the retail slump. Mbantua art dealer and gallery owner Tim Jennings says he is turning away artists, which is having an impact on employment and incomes in Outback communities. “Many of the artists who paint for Mbantua are taking a forced break from painting as demand for art has slowed down worldwide, due, predominantly to the economic climate,” Mr Jennings said. Mbantua has been a provider for more than 20 years of work for the artists of Utopia, a community 250 kilometres northeast of Alice Springs. The gallery buys art from about 200 artists, some of whom support large families. “It is their primary source of income and employment and we need to get them painting again,” he said. To try and stimulate the market Mbantua is discounting prices at its three retail outlets. “Selected artists will be discounted, which will create opportunities for buyers and help Mbantua gee up Utopia artists who have found themselves without a regular outlet for their paintings.” A number of years ago Mbantua established a Foundation for Central Australia with its mandate being to assist indigenous disadvantage in Central Australia. More information on the foundation can be obtained by contacting foundation development manager Miranda Daniels at Miranda.Daniels@mbantuafoundation. org.au More information on the artists of Utopia can be found on Mbantua’s website www.mbantua.com.au

Premiers Sorras outlast spirited Somerville By Toe Punt MPNFL Nepean League reigning premiers Sorrento withstood a last quarter fightback to record an impressive 10-point victory over Somerville on Saturday. The Sharks, who recorded a strong victory over Dromana on Easter Saturday, went into Saturday’s match without star players including Brendan Cairns, Kayle Stringer-Morris, Trevor Mattison, Troy Schwarze, Leigh Treeby and Cayden Beetham. During the second quarter, skipper Benny McCormack went down with a hamstring strain and Glen Boyington was knocked out. Despite being two players down during the game, the home side was able to stretch its 13-point half-time lead to 21 points at the final break. Sorrento won 12.12-84 to Somerville 10.14-74. Somerville got within nine points at the 10-minute mark of the last quarter, but wasn’t able to get any closer. The Eagles also went into the game far from full strength. Will Jolley, Aaron Murray, Todd Farrelly, Chris King, Jed Sutton, Nick Brown and Lachy Edwards were all missing on Saturday. Eagles’ coach Leigh Stewart will be disappointed by the result, but buoyed by the fact his side, despite not being at full strength, was able to push the reigning premier for four quarters. Justin Farrelly was outstanding for the Eagles in his first game with the club, while Chris Bagot was superb for the Sharks in the back line. Dion Phillips was awarded the Radio Port Phillip man of the match award for his tireless four-quarter effort. A rushed behind in the dying seconds of the game saw Crib Point sneak over the line in a thriller against Red Hill, 15.15-105 to 16.8-104. Trailing for the large majority of the

afternoon, Jon Flack took a contested mark and converted for the Magpies to draw the scores level with a handful of minutes to play. Brad Davison then kicked the ball off the ground with seconds left and watched as the ball trickled through the behinds. It was enough to hand the Pies the four points. Magpies coach Dave Lawson said he was thrilled with the way his charges fought out the game. “I thought we were down and out at three-quarter time to be honest,” Lawson said. “Red Hill was running us ragged and I wasn’t sure we had the fitness on the big Red Hill ground to fight it out,” he said. “However, some of the second and third efforts in that last quarter were sensational and it was fantastic to get a win in a close one.” Lawson agreed that winning the tight ones was important this season. “The competition is so even, it is vital that you convert all of your opportunities, especially when you look at our draw and see Hastings at Hastings and Frankston at Frankston in the next two weeks.” Red Hill unveiled a number of new players, including Joe Krieger and Alex Lee. Both have been on AFL lists (Fremantle and Port Adelaide respectively) and provided the Hillmen with much-needed height. Jamie McCall was also a welcome addition, given his height. Dromana bounced back from its hammering against Sorrento last week to dish out a thrashing to Pearcedale, winning 26.16.172 to 9.13.67. The Tigers booted nine goals to one in the opening term and the game was done and dusted from that point. Chelsea recruit Anthony Bruhn was impressive in attack for the Tigers with

six goals, while Paul Minchington was back to some of his best with five majors. It was a very disappointing day for the Panthers, who recruited heavily in the off-season. Three of their recruits in Tony Lester, Andrew Douglas and Chris Fortnam were among their better players. Hastings trailed for much of the match against Rosebud, but was able to dig deep in the last quarter and win 13.12-90 to 11.9-75. The Blues trailed by the smallest of margins at three-quarter time, but were able to boot five goals to two in the final term. Hastings coach Glenn Michie, who booted four goals in an outstanding display at centre half-forward, was proud of the way his players fought out the game. “I wasn’t overly impressed with our four-quarter performance, given that we were undisciplined at times and it cost us dearly,” Michie said. “That’s not the way we want to play our footy. In saying that, to lose Kyle Pinto [shoulder] and recruit Mark Devereaux [corked thigh] early in the match and then fight it out against quality opposition was pleasing. “Rosebud’s midfield is as good as it has been for a long time and we knew we were in for a tight match. To win a close one first up was great,” Michie said. Buds’ coach Mark Hustwaite said he was pleased to see that his side had “closed the gap” on last year’s grand finalists. “We were smashed by 19 goals by Hastings last year, so to get within 15 points in round one was pleasing,” Hustwaite said. “It was great to have Rhys Bancroft, Daniel Giarusso and Aaron Rose back out on the park [they players less than

10 games collectively last season], which gave us a seven-man midfield rotation. “Tom and Matt Baker also give us the key position height we’ve been looking for and Chris Rogers did a great job down back for us. “To be honest, I couldn’t be more positive after a loss,” Hustwaite said. New Rye coach Ben Holmes was also up and about after his side’s thrashing of Frankston Bombers. The Demons led at every change and recorded an emphatic 17.15-117 to 8.10-58 victory. East Doncaster recruit Justin Van Unen finished with eight goals from 15 shots, while Darren Booth was clearly best on ground. Holmes told The News that beating Frankston at Frankston in round one was a brilliant start to the season. “They’re a very difficult side to beat at home and to win in that fashion was a great start,” Holmes said. Teenager Andrew Dean booted three goals, as did the coach. “It was my first run for the year and I was glad to get through. I started at centre half-back and played through

the middle, then moved forward when we lost Aaron Findlay [ankle],” Holmes said. “There were a lot of positives, including the form of Rhett Sutton, who spent the entire game in the ruck.” There wasn’t a lot to crow about for the Bombers. Tyabb proved it wasn’t going to be the whipping boys of the competition as some predicted, storming home to beat Devon Meadows. The Yabbies have had a long preseason under new coach Brad Coller and it came to the fore on Saturday, when they booting seven goals to three in the last quarter to win 17.13-115 to 12.10-82. Ash Waterstone booted four goals for the Yabbies while Cranbourne recruit Ryan Jones was oustanding. Scott Pickersgill, in his club record breaking 308 th game, was one of the best players on the ground. Callum O’Hare was the best of the Meadows. Interestingly, Tyabb skipper Matty Dimkos was best on ground in the reserves.

Repeat for Leeder-Chard, Russian takes women’s PLAYERS and spectators were treated to some great tennis at Rosebud over the Easter weekend. Qualifying rounds to the main event started on Good Friday and the finals, with Australian ranking points up for grabs, were completed on Easter Monday. In a thrilling 6-1, 4-6, 10-6 tiebreaker, Aaron Leeder-Chard defeated Robert Phillip, taking out the men’s open title for the second year in a row. Aaron began his tennis career on the peninsula and is now a regular on the ITF circuit with some solid wins coming into the 2012 event. The women’s event was won by young Russian player Alexsandra Kazanova who defeated Cindy Watson of Mornington 7-5, 7-5 in a close final. The winners were presented with trophies and total prize money of $7500. Tournament director and club coach Steven Giammarco said: “The club is to be congratulated for providing the excellent facilities and services required to host a Gold Series

Tournament. Players enjoy coming to Rosebud and the en tous cas courts are just what the state’s top players look for in the lead up to Tennis Victoria’s pennant season.” The tournament is held every Easter and attracts metropolitan and country tennis players. “While it’s fantastic for the tournament to have a strong field of open players, we encourage local players, both senior and junior, to consider having a go at the graded events next year, as this is an event for tennis players of all standards,” Mr Giammarco said. Rosebud Tennis Club is in Hove Rd and the club is looking for new members. Competition and social tennis is available daily. Contact Steven Giammarco 0401 478 955 for coaching or to join the Cardio Tennis program. The club thanked peninsula businesses for their generous sponsorship of the event.

Peninsula racer on the podium FORMER Dromana Secondary College student Bryce Van Hoof competed in the first round of the Victorian Road Race Championships at Broadford Raceway late last month. In race one, he finished fifth overall and fourth Prostock for the race and also set a new PB of 59.2. In the two races on the Sunday he finished fourth overall and third Prostock, and third

overall and third Prostock. “I am extremely happy with the weekend’s results and times. I feel I still have a lot to learn on the bike,” Van Hoof said. His next outing will be in Darwin to compete in round two of the ASBK at Hidden Valley on 20-22 April. To follow Bryce’s progress go to www. hoofyracing.com

Blues, Bombers at MCG; Eagles tackle Hawks Round 4 Previews Friday 20 April St Kilda v Fremantle, Etihad Stadium, 7.50pm Round four starts with Ross Lyon returning to Etihad Stadium against his old club the Saints. After their disappointing round one loss, the Saints have come good, thrashing the Suns and Dogs. Since coming back from a season-ending knee injury last year, Lenny Hayes was amazing, winning 30 disposals and continuing to go hard at the footy. The Dockers on the weekend played a typical Ross Lyon game style – low scoring and great emphasis on defence, but like all Lyon teams they got the job done. This will be a very good match. If played in the west, the Dockers would win easily, but they have always struggled in Melbourne. Fremantle by 3 points. Saturday 21 April Carlton v Essendon, MCG, 1.45pm In a blockbuster at the MCG these two undefeated teams get set to replay last year’s elimination final. The Blues on the weekend had arguably their best game in 10 years when they defeated Collingwood in a flawless performance. Andrew Carrazzo, the best and fairest winner in 2007, reminded us that behind Murphy and

Judd there is still plenty of talent to be shown. The Bombers struggled against the Suns but showed poise in getting home by 17 points. Forwards Michael Hurley and Stewart Crameri are creating their own dynamic duo, kicking 12 goals between them in the first three games. This game is a battle for the ages, but Carlton was absolutely outstanding on Friday night and there is no reason why they can’t make it four from four. Carlton by 33 points. Collingwood v Port Adelaide, Etihad Stadium, 2.10pm The Pies had one of their darkest nights in quite some time when they were smashed by the arch-enemy Carlton. With a season-ending injury to Luke Ball and a quad injury to Ben Reid, the Pies have to work extra hard to get back in the top four. The Power had a respectable loss for the second week in a row. Compared to last season, Port Adelaide has improved in leaps and bounds, but has struggled to run matches out against quality opponents. Despite all Collingwood’s injuries they still have a quality team capable of beating inexperienced sides, which is Port Adelaide summed up in two words. Collingwood by 20 points. Adelaide v GWS Giants, AAMI Stadium, 4.40pm After having their unbeaten run ended on the weekend, the Crows will look for a nice percentage booster against the Giants. Adelaide this year has a killer forward line with

TAKE A CLOSER LOOK...

Taylor Walker, Kurt Tippett and Tom Lynch all in ripping form. The Giants played reasonable well, but were never a chance against a rampaging West Coast. Dylan Shiel played a great game on Daniel Kerr and also managed to get 27 touches. This week the Giants face another mission impossible game when they travel to South Australia to test their skills against the Crows. Adelaide by 92 points. West Coast v Hawthorn, Patersons Stadium, 7.40pm Despite resting three senior players, the Eagles had a walk in the park when they destroyed GWS by 89 points. Last year’s rising star runnerup Luke Shuey had a career best game, kicking five goals and getting 25 possessions. The Hawks bounced back from a disappointing round two loss and cruised to an easy win against Adelaide. Sharp shooter Luke Breust was knocked out as he courageously went back with the flight of the ball, and there will be some doubt about his fitness to play. During their grand final years, West Coast were nearly impossible to beat at home, and they look just as damaging this year. West Coast by 37 points. Brisbane v Gold Coast, Gabba, 7.40pm In the first “Q Clash” of the season the Lions and Suns are seeking bragging rights. The Lions on the weekend took the longest plane trip in the game, and never looked up to it against Fremantle. Jonathan Brown was

barely sighted, not adding to his three possessions after quarter time. The Suns finally lived up to expectations when they took it to the Bombers and played two quarters of inspiring football before being overrun by a better team. In 2011 it was the Gold Coast who snuck home in the first game, but the second time around the Lions who won by 10 goals. This time the Lions look more consistent and will probably get the points. Brisbane by 27 points. Sunday 22 April Geelong v Richmond, Simonds Stadium, 1.10pm This game will be a time for reflecting as Geelong unveils its 2011 premiership flag in front of the fans at Simonds Stadium, aka Kardinia Park. The Cats could use some of their 2011 form right now after two upset losses in three weeks. The Tigers on the weekend finally got a win on the board when they flogged Melbourne by 59 points. Shaun Grigg was best on ground, playing on at every opportunity and chiselling a hole through Melbourne’s midfield. He finished with 37 disposals. No matter the Cats’ form they’re always going to have a massive advantage playing in Geelong. Geelong by 24 points. Sydney v North Melbourne, SCG, 3.15pm The Swans have started 2012 with a bang, winning their first three games; they haven’t done this since 2001. After a patchy debut season, Victorian Luke Parker has cemented

WE WE WE WE WE WE WE

a spot in this Sydney side by playing hard, contested football. Last Sunday was a massive turning point for North Melbourne when it knocked off reigning premier Geelong in a spectacular performance. This match will be won and lost in the Kangaroos’ forward line with big Drew Petrie, Aaron Edwards, Jack Ziebell and even Hamish McIntosh all big targets. North Melbourne hasn’t beaten Sydney since 2007 and struggled on the road last year, so this could be Sydney’s chance for its best start to the season in a long time. Sydney by 6 points. Melbourne v Western Bulldogs, MCG, 4.40pm It’s only three weeks into the season but already Melbourne is looking like a team struggling to find its place in the competition. The Demons on the weekend had another terrible loss, this time against Richmond. They were competitive until half-time but showed little resistance after that. Similar to the Demons, the Bulldogs were atrocious against a beatable side in St Kilda. Halfway through the last quarter the Bullies had only kicked two goals and, apart from Matthew Boyd, were struggling to get their hands on the ball. The loser of this game will be fighting GWS and Gold Coast to avoid the wooden spoon. Western Bulldogs by 13 points. Twitter: FootballTragic9 Total tips: 21

The centre of building THE trick to good building and renovating is to have a plan and to be thorough with your research. Failure to do both can cause problems with quality, budget and overall results. Luckily the Mornington Peninsula has its very own building centre, Home Innovations, to turn to for help with planning, design advice and product selection to help avoid such nightmares. It has experienced staff to help seven days and there is always an expert on hand with the Master Builders, Boral and Croft Wootton Construction using Home Innovations as their southern base with offices on the premises. Home Innovations manager Andrew Gorman was asked how the centre keeps up to date with home technology. “We learn from a variety of sources like the

Master Builders, exhibitors’ seminars and even from visitors enquiring about new products,” Mr Gorman said. “Countless times we’ve had a homeowner asking for a special new product and with research we find them and we invite them to join our Exhibitor Group.” The centre has recently completed a major renovation of its own so if you haven’t visited for some time, don’t waste time trawling and visit Home Innovations Building Centre. With new exhibitors arriving daily you’ll find hundreds of the latest building and renovating products from quality Mornington Peninsula companies. Home Innovations is in the Peninsula Homemaker Centre, corner Nepean Highway and Bungower Road, Mornington, behind Bunnings and is open 7 days from 10am-5pm.

BEDDING, BED LINEN + MORE

Great deal from the owners ROBERT and Angela Nassar have been operating Rise+Shine Bedding Mornington for just over 18 months. Both have an extensive background in the bedding and furniture industry – Robert for more than 26 years and Angela for more than 17 years. As owneroperators they pride themselves on offering the best service and advice. Robert has worked in the manufacturing side of mattresses and has an extensive knowledge of manufacturing of high quality Australian-made mattresses. Their range is second to none. After listening to customer requests they have altered store ranges accordingly. This includes introducing new and exclusive Australianmade furniture ranges that allow for items to be custom made as well as made to order. This also allows for bedheads only to be made as well as a huge range of stained and painted finishes in all sizes. All beds have thick timbers slats that won’t break; none of their beds have cheap imported postureslats. Ranges include timbers such as Victorian ash and blackwood, as well as upholstered beds and a huge selection of mattress and

base sets including the newly released Sealy Posturepedic Titanium range as well as an extensive range of pocket spring mattresses that allow correct spinal alignment and minimal partner disturbance, as well as the latest pressure relieving Italian gel mattresses all made in Melbourne. They are proud to state that all of mattresses are Australian-made (Melbourne-based suppliers) – not imported. This is an important factor as imported mattresses have no regulations as to what foams are used or how they are treated during production, or what they are sprayed with to get through customs. Rise+Shine also offer an extensive range of Manchester including quilts, quiltsets, pillows and sheets as well as an ever-changing range of accessories to compliment all decors. The small boutique store has all you need to make your bedroom a room to be proud of. Don’t settle for what you see – make changes to make the suite your own. They are open seven days so come in and see the quality of items available. You won’t be disappointed.
