This September will see the introduction of Traineeships, a new system of learning that has been designed with industry for industry. Project-Based Learning is a dynamic approach to teaching and learning, in which students explore real-world industrybased problems and challenges.

Armagh Campus

The new 4,500 sq. metre campus at Banbridge also opened its doors to its first cohort of students in September 2020. The £15m campus was constructed by O’Hare & McGovern and incorporates outstanding new learning facilities, including a dedicated Learning Resource Centre and an innovation hub. The Banbridge campus is a dedicated centre for multimedia and digital design, offering a wide range of full-time and part-time courses through to degree level, whilst also providing a range of courses in areas such as health, social care and childcare.

The new £35m campus at Lonsdale Road in Armagh welcomed its first students last September. Constructed by Felix O’Hare & Company, this 14,000 sq. metre campus has been carefully designed to include a modern Learning Resource Centre, integrated student social areas and Learning Support services, in addition to specialist spaces to support practical and theorybased learning in areas such as ceramics, photography, fine art, dance, music, performing arts, sport, science, hospitality, hair and beauty. Five world class construction and engineering workshops also enhance the College’s STEM-focused credentials. The campus also houses a state of the art, purpose designed

campus in Craigavon as part of a £45m investment in partnership with the Department for the Economy. This new landmark campus will support hundreds of new jobs during construction, create more than 350 new local apprenticeship opportunities annually and underpin the College’s status as a major employer in the area. It will also provide enhanced full and parttime educational and training opportunities for an even greater number of people within the area. As well as delivering increased curriculum provision on site, a wider range of degree and postgraduate level courses will be accessed locally.

Earlier this year, SRC acquired the Newry Sports Centre and car park, located on Patrick Street, from Newry, Mourne and Down District Council. This acquisition is the first stage of the College’s plans to expand its existing Newry East campus, which is adjacent to this site, and pave the way for the creation of a new Higher Education and Innovation Centre.

Continuing to Stay Safe on Campus We endeavour to do all we can to continue to keep our students and staff as safe as possible when in campus buildings. We continue to work with the Public Health Agency to ensure that current guidance is followed and that safeguards including social distancing, sanitising and wearing of face coverings, remain in place throughout the college premises. Marilyn Receives MBE for Services to Education and Children Marilyn Warren, one of our lecturers within the Faculty of Health and Science, was awarded a MBE in the New Year Honours List for her services to education and children. Speaking about her award, Marilyn said: “I was completely surprised but totally delighted when I learned of receiving this fantastic award and recognition. It was certainly a fabulous and uplifting way to end such a challenging year.” Brian Doran, Principal and Chief Executive at Southern Regional College said: “I am absolutely thrilled to hear that Marilyn has received a MBE for her services to education and children. Marilyn has dedicated her life to teaching others and her career has spanned 43 years working in primary to higher education. She is a member of staff whose enthusiasm and passion for her area of expertise is infectious and consistently goes above and beyond to meet the needs of her students”.

Marilyn is no stranger to receiving prestigious awards, having been awarded the esteemed Lion Award for Lecturer of the Year 2019 as part of the annual City & Guilds Medals for Excellence programme. In 2018 Marilyn also received a coveted Medal of Excellence for not only being a champion for learning, but for her ‘enthusiasm and outstanding subject knowledge’.

SRC Standards are Top of the Class SRC has once again achieved the Matrix Quality Standard for the Information, Advice and Guidance (IAG) provided for all of our students. To apply for the Hardship Fund, you must be 18+ years and enrolled on a part-time accredited course. The level of funding provided will be based on household income thresholds. Students on means tested benefits may be entitled to a repayment of the full course fees paid. Students with income below £33,950, may be entitled to a repayment of at least 50% of course fees paid. Application forms for the Hardship Fund will be available at Campus Receptions from the start of September 2021.

2. Further Education (FE) Grant

a) Tuition Fee and Maintenance Grant Higher Education students can apply for a means tested Maintenance Grant (nonrepayable) up to £3,475 for a full-time student or up to £1,230 for a part-time student. Students who do not qualify for a full Tuition Fee Grant, can apply for the outstanding fee via the new Tuition Fee Loan option. b) Tuition Fee Loan

Students who are 19 by 1st July, who are on a low income or in receipt of a means tested benefit, can apply for a Further Education Grant to help pay for course fees. Courses eligible must be more than 8 hours per week or have a full-time equivalent programme. Students must also be progressing to a more advanced level of study. You may also receive a grant of £265 for books and equipment. This grant is also means tested. Application forms are available from Campus Receptions or can

The amount of loan varies; however, a full-time student can receive up to £4,840 per year living away from home and £3,750 per year living at home. A parttime student can receive up to £3,022.50. SRC Students are Good to Go! At Southern Regional College we aim to prepare our students for today’s workplace, equipping them with a complete range of skills sought by employers. In an increasingly competitive world, employers need work-ready students who can perform in an evolving economy. Project-Based Learning (PBL) is a dynamic approach to teaching and learning, where students explore real-world industry-based problems and challenges. As students explore and provide solutions to these challenges, they gain a vast array of technical knowledge and skills by investigating the problem, planning, creating solutions and presenting the finished product/solution to the employer and other key stakeholders. Project-Based Learning helps students to develop skills required for the workplace such as: • Communication Skills • Digital Skills • Teamwork • Critical Thinking • Creativity • Problem Solving • Self-Management PBL is a fundamental part of the SRC curriculum provision in Level 2 Further Education and Traineeships, Level 3 courses, the new Level 3 Advanced Technical Awards. It is also a primary teaching and learning strategy applied throughout the delivery of a range of our higher education courses.

Examples of projects recently completed include our engineering students who created designs for a bale grabber for a local engineering firm and our media students who created the new build promotional video for the new £15m Banbridge campus. Working in collaboration with the SRC Business Support and Innovation Team, we are constantly developing new and exciting PBL projects for our students to get involved in. Mentor Connect Launched to Employers and Apprentices A package of resources to promote and enhance the apprenticeship programme offered at the six Further Education Colleges in NI has been launched. This is part of a collaborative project by all six Colleges. ‘Mentor Connect’, which has been developed under the NI Apprenticeship Challenge Fund through the Department for the Economy, offers a range of online materials for both employers and apprentices aimed at strengthening relationships and ensuring that apprentices gain the maximum benefit from their experience. Employers can access a free online training module leading to recognition as an Apprenticeship Mentor. They can also explore the Employers’ Toolkit, which explains fully how the NI Apprenticeship programme works. New and aspiring apprentices can access an ‘Apprentice Toolkit’, which provides them with the information needed to secure an apprenticeship job, prepares them for joining the workplace and helps them make the most of their apprenticeship in order to build a career in their chosen area. Denise Cornett, Training & Apprenticeship Manager in SRC was involved in the programme development and delivery and commented: “SRC work with a wide range of local employers in the southern region to help them develop and grow their businesses through supply

of apprentice level employees. The Mentor Connect resources will enable current and prospective apprentices and employers to access a toolkit of important information and ensure that businesses are able to fully support an apprentice by appointing a mentor to guide the apprentice on their training journey. This will benefit both the apprentice and the business and contribute to a successful outcome for both parties”. Dylan, from Tandragee, works for Johnny Elliot at Orchard Tiles in Portadown and is currently completing the Level 3 Wall and Floor Tiling apprenticeship programme at our Greenbank Campus, Newry.

The Tile Association (TTA) is the trade association for wall and floor tiling in the UK and to win one of these awards is a mark of excellence and skill within the industry.

Dylan is continuing to train hard to complete his qualifications here at SRC and as part of the WorldSkills UK squad. Well done!”

Upon receiving his award, Dylan said; “I started my trade in Year 11 in the School Partnership Programme and this experience really helped me confirm that this was my career pathway. It is unbelievable how far I have come and what I have achieved with the training and support I receive at Southern Regional College. I now have the opportunity to go to the Skills Olympics as part of WorldSkills UK and compete in my skill area.”

A County Armagh car dealership has equipped Southern Regional College with three all-electric and environmentally friendly Nissan LEAFs.

Brian Doran, Principal and Chief Executive of Southern Regional College, said: ‘‘We were delighted to take delivery of three Nissan LEAFs and are really looking forward to putting them through their paces.

The competition gives all further education students from across the FE colleges in Northern Ireland, the opportunity to pitch their ideas within set categories, to a panel of experts. This competition celebrates the excellence and diversity of project based learning across all curriculum areas and showcases the creativity and innovation among FE students.

SRC on the right path to reduce carbon footprint

The Nissan LEAFs were chosen as we seek to minimise our carbon footprint. Our aims are to embed sustainability into our curriculum and create an ethos of environmental responsibility across the entire College community.

Despite lockdown, Southern Regional College students continued to excel in their studies and had the opportunity to present their innovative ideas at the recent Further Education Sector Project Based Learning Skills Competition.

The categories were very relevant to our everyday lives and covered topics on ‘innovation’, ‘social impact’, ‘green/environment’ and ‘best overall project’.

Dylan will now add this award to his already bulging trophy cabinet as he has also won Gold at the national finals of the SkillBuild

SRC Students Excel in Project Based Learning Throughout Lockdown and are Awarded Best in Sector!

“Government is concentrating on the skills gap and the fact that young people are not workready. The work that SRC is doing is imperative in making them work-ready. This means helping students develop their negotiation skills, communication skills, attitude, teamwork - all of these things that are essential to working in a normal working environment, no matter the sector. This is critical to our workforce and bridging the skills gap.”

SRC students competed in the internal college competition, with the winners progressing to the sector competition. This year’s sector competition final was hosted online and included 17 projects and 67 students across the 6 FE colleges. Students created 3 minute videos pitching their projects, which were reviewed and scored by a representative from each FE college (with representatives unable to score their own college entries). SRC was delighted to learn that the College’s Christmas Panto ‘Beauty and The Beast’ was announced the winner of the Social Impact Award as well as Overall Winners across the sector! The College’s gaming students project, ‘Herd on the Hill’ was also awarded runner up in the innovation category! The SRC panto was an all inclusive example of project based learning at its finest, using the skills and ideas of students from performing arts, music, media, hairdressing, beauty therapy, joinery and art and design to deliver a virtual panto extravaganza to thousands of school pupils from over 500 primary, secondary and special schools across Northern Ireland!

Northern Ireland College’s Launch ‘FE for Me’ ‘FE for Me’ launched by the six regional Further Education colleges, celebrates all that is great about further education in Northern Ireland. It promotes the extensive contribution that the NI colleges make to the Northern Irish economy, as well as their role in fostering social inclusion. The sector campaign has been launched just as the Department for the Economy has announced its 10X Skills Strategy, which sees investment in the skills and talent of the Northern Ireland workforce. A core component of that strategy is the role played by the six regional colleges. The launch of ‘FE for Me’ is another important step in our journey to showcase the unique offer of Further Education in Northern Ireland.

“My tutors played a part in my personal development.” Adele left Our Lady’s Grammar School in Newry at the tender age of 16 and started at the College in the BTEC National Diploma in Business Studies class. She followed this a few years later by successfully completing the HND in Business and Related Studies. In 2019, she decided to come back to education via the part-time route.

This course allowed Sharon the flexibility to study part-time whilst also juggling other commitments.

Open University Foundation Degree in Digital Marketing, Advertising and Communications – Higher Level Apprenticeship

“I looked for alternatives...I wanted to simultaneously put my taught skills into practice.” Lukas Vajega started with SRC at Level 2, quickly progressing to Level 3, studying Business at both levels. Taking a break from education at that stage, Lukas sought out work experience and developed significant interest in the fields of graphic design and digital artwork. Wanting to return to education to progress his qualifications he faced the decision about what course would offer the best prospectus.

Lukas says: “I found myself drawn to the practice of Marketing. I decided to look for an alternative route where I would be able to work and study at the same time, gaining both an academic qualification and industry based knowledge. I wanted to simultaneously put my taught skills into practice and decided to apply for the Higher Level Apprenticeship (HLA) in Digital Marketing, Advertising & Communications.

He continues: “During my time on the HLA I have become more open to new suggestions and have grown to understand that I won’t have all of the answers all of the time - teamwork is key. Getting feedback and critique from peers and friends has helped me develop a unique way of thinking. Being exposed to a group of like-minded people provides great opportunity to learn and grow.”

“The joy of successfully completing this qualification far outweighs the pressures and the tiredness I often felt.” Sandra McMullan chose to study the Foundation Degree in Early Childhood Studies via the part-time route to set herself a challenge, further her education and improve her job prospects. Sandra says: “As a mature student I had not formally studied since completing my NVQ Level 3 in Childcare and Education in 2002.

Being back behind the desk as a student, writing assignments and sitting formal exams was quite a shock to the system! Juggling my time between being a Mum of three teenagers, a farmer’s wife and working as a SEN assistant often meant I had to burn the midnight oil to complete assignments.”

She continues: “The joy of successfully completing this qualification far outweighs the pressures and the tiredness I often felt. I could not have done it without the fantastic support from my tutors and fellow students at SRC, my work colleagues and my family. I hope to continue studying towards the BA (Hons) in Early Childhood Studies at SRC.”

“The modules I studied at SRC gave me a head start when I started my degree at Queens.” Graeme Taylor was working as a mechanic and had been in the industry for a few years when he decided he needed a career change. Graeme says: “I had always been pretty tech savvy and knowing a few people in the IT industry I thought that might be a great option. I attended a SRC Open Day to enquire about computing courses. Not long after that I enrolled on the BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in IT.”

After completing this two-year programme, Graeme progressed onto the Foundation Degree in Computing and Network Systems at SRC. Successfully completing this course meant he was able to apply to second year of the Queens University Belfast Degree in Software Engineering with Digital Technology.

He continues: “I believe my time at SRC really helped make the progression to university a lot easier than for some who came straight from secondary school. The modules I was taught at SRC also gave me a head start when it came to coding, databases, networking and the software development lifecycles, as well as giving me the opportunity to develop my team working skills.”

Level 2 Traineeships Launching for 2021

SRC has launched a new training programme at Level 2 for the September 2021 intake of students. The new Level 2 Traineeship will give students all the skills they need to get a job within a specific sector or to move onto further study at Level 3 (Further Education or Apprenticeship). Each Traineeship has been developed in conjunction with employers, so students will gain the skills employers want. From September 2021 we are offering Traineeships in a huge range of areas from Brickwork to Plumbing and Butchery to Retail.

SRC and Glenavon Football Club Create Winning Team Southern Regional College and Glenavon Football Club have partnered to provide young footballers with the opportunity to enhance their football skills while gaining an A-Level equivalent qualification in Sport. Academically, the course will be based at our Lurgan campus and the majority of the coaching will be provided by Glenavon coaches. Academy Director, Jason King, said “It’s a fantastic opportunity to offer full-time football for 16 year olds and this isn’t just good for Glenavon, but for the area. This provides an opportunity to players who want to continue their education but not via the conventional A-Level route. We know not every student will go on to be a part-time or full-time footballer, so this programmes gives students the opportunity to help players develop, while also providing coaching. It is exciting for the club and the town. It is something which has been missing.”

SRC Curriculum Area Manager, Matt Turner said it was the right time to start work on such a project in the region. “SRC is very excited to be embarking on this project with Glenavon to help develop players from a variety of football clubs across the region. We will afford the appropriate time and resources to ensure that we get this right and better the lives of young people, giving them the best possible opportunities to strive for excellence in sporting and academic areas.” The Glenavon Academy Level 3 qualification will commence in September 2022 on SRC’s Lurgan Campus. Students who wish to embark on a sporting qualification in September 2021 can apply for a variety of courses now at www.src.ac.uk.

Centre of Excellence Status Established for SRC Southern Regional College is delighted to be designated a TTA (The Tile Association) Centre of Excellence. The College’s tiling courses are particularly well regarded, and students have notched up considerable achievements, including competing in the World Skills UK national finals, under the enthusiastic guidance of Paul Doran, Lecturer at the College, who is also the WorldSkills UK Training Manager for Wall and Floor Tiling. “TTA is delighted to welcome SRC as a TTA Centre of Excellence,” says David Rowley, Chairman of the TTA Training Committee. “The College provides a great resource for trainee and apprentice tillers looking for training. I would like to congratulate the College, and I’m sure the accolade of being a TTA Centre of Excellence will strengthen their offer to the community, enabling students in Northern Ireland to access the most suitable training available.” Speaking on the award, Brian Doran, Principal & Chief Executive of Southern Regional College said: “Southern Regional College is delighted to be awarded TTA Centre of Excellence status. As the largest provider of construction apprenticeships in the local area, it is critical to meet labour market demand and provide opportunities for young people to progress into the range of jobs available in the tiling industry.
