Staff Member, Gerard McVeigh Raised a Remarkable Sum for PIPS!
Well done to Gerard McVeigh from our Hospitality department who bravely undertook a Skydive last month. Gerard raised an impressive £3,261 for PIPS, a suicide prevention charity. PIPS provide counselling and befriending support to individuals who are experiencing or have experienced suicidal thoughts or mental unwellness. They also support families and friends who have been touched by suicide. The money raised will now be able to help so many individuals who require support. Well done Gerard!!

Games Development Students Swapped the Classroom to Visit Ormeau Baths Innovation Centre
The HND Games Development students got a break from the classroom with a visit to The Pixel Mill at Ormeau Baths Innovation Centre in Belfast. This is a collaborative co-working space for game development teams across Northern Ireland. Students met with Rory Clifford, the Interactive Manager at NI Screen who provided a tour of the premises, discussed placement opportunities and highlighted the support The Pixel Mill provide to start-ups in NI.
Students got to ask questions in relation to their portfolios, were given interview techniques and explored the most recent work produced by game studios from local talent in Northern Ireland. SRC Students bring Poignant Final Words to Life: “I Love You Mum - I Promise I Won’t Die” Last month SRC Performing Arts & Music Production students toured secondary schools in the Armagh, Banbridge and Craigavon Borough Council with a week-long performance based on the true story, “I Love You Mum- I Promise I Won’t Die”. These performances were joined with the Policing and Community Safety Partnerships (PCSP), the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) and the College to raise awareness of the impact of drug misuse. The play is based on actual words of friends and family of 16-year-old Daniel Spargo-Mabbs, a young person who died in 2014. Daniel’s death shocked his fellow school pupils, teachers and local community with his tragic death inspiring the creation of “I Love You Mum – I Promise I Won’t Die”. The play took 18 months to develop as it was based on a series of painstaking interviews from friends and family. The play confronts the issue of drug misuse and is a very emotive subject dealing with the increasingly unavoidable part of the world which young people live in. The students performed at New-Bridge Integrated College, Loughbrickland; The Royal School, Armagh; St Ronan’s College, Lurgan and Banbridge High School. Students aged 16 plus were provided with relevant information which challenges perceptions of substance use, risk, and consequences, and understanding the role of peer pressure. The play received amazing feedback.

Students who performed the play have been commended for their performances with Teresa McBride, Performing and Production Arts, Level 3 Extended Diploma Co-ordinator commenting: “The students have been fantastic to work with. Their level of professionalism makes my job so much easier. The skills they are learning is invaluable and will stand to them in their future careers. Our aim performing in various schools was to bring the message of Daniel. To make young people see the devastating consequences drugs can have on their family and friends. Daniel had so much to live for. He was the popular guy at school among staff and students. He had his whole life ahead of him and one moment, one bad decision took it all away in an instant.”
Gwen Bartley, PCSP Project Coordinator further commented: “It was fantastic working with SRC Performing Arts and Music Production Students. The play showed the devastation in a family when a loved one dies after taking drugs, Daniel in the play is only 16 when he dies. Drama is an effective way of delivering this important message to young people and helps us to raise awareness on the dangers of taking drugs”.
See an interview from the play’s cast members Mary-Kate Moore and Theo Papadopoulos who undertook the role of Daniels parents, providing an insight into this sensitive and impactful storyline.
