Unlock Your Potential

The Power of Part-Time Higher Education

In a world driven by innovation and expertise, the pursuit of higher education stands as a symbol of personal and professional growth. However, traditional routes through full-time study can often seem daunting, impractical, or simply out of reach for many who are juggling work, family, and other commitments. Enter part-time higher education – a dynamic avenue that not only opens doors to knowledge and skill acquisition but also aligns with the realities of modern life.

Embracing Opportunity

Higher education is not merely a path to a qualification; it is a transformative journey that empowers individuals to unlock their full potential. Whether you're a seasoned professional seeking to enhance your expertise or an aspiring learner eager to delve into new realms of learning, the benefits are many.

Career Advancement

One of the most compelling reasons to pursue higher education is the vast array of career opportunities it unlocks. With a qualification in hand, individuals become more competitive in the job market, commanding higher salaries, and securing positions with greater responsibility. Part-time study can allow you to seamlessly integrate academic pursuits

with professional endeavours, ensuring that career growth remains uninterrupted.

Personal Development

Beyond professional gains, higher education fosters holistic personal development. It cultivates critical thinking, problemsolving abilities, and communication skills – all of which are invaluable in both professional and personal life. Moreover, the pursuit of knowledge instils a lifelong love of learning, enriching individuals intellectually and culturally.

Networking and Collaboration

Part-time higher education programmes offer a unique opportunity to connect with a diverse array of peers and professionals. These interactions foster collaboration, idea exchange, and networking – all of which are instrumental in career advancement. Through shared experiences and collaborative projects, you will not only expand your knowledge base but also build lasting relationships that can propel you forward in your career.

The Power of Part-Time Study

In today's fast-paced world, the traditional model of full-time study may not be feasible for everyone. Part-time higher education presents a flexible alternative that accommodates the diverse needs and commitments of modern learners.

Flexibility and Accessibility

Part-time study eliminates the need to sacrifice work or other obligations in pursuit of education. By offering day, evening and online study, Southern Regional College provides learners with the flexibility to tailor their academic journey to fit their schedule. This accessibility ensures that education remains within reach of all.

Practical Application

Part-time higher education emphasises practical, real-world skills that are immediately applicable in professional settings. From hands-on projects to industry-specific coursework, learners gain practical experience that directly translates into enhanced job performance and career advancement.

Affordability

Our part-time Higher National Certificates and Diplomas, Foundation Degrees and Degrees are offered at much reduced rates in comparison to traditional university study. This affordability makes higher education accessible to a broader segment of the population, ensuring that financial constraints do not hinder academic pursuits. There are also many grants and loans available to those studying part-time to help with the cost of tuition fees and other associated costs.

Supportive Learning Environment

Part-time learners benefit from a supportive learning environment tailored to their unique needs. With smaller class sizes and dedicated lecturing and support staff, Southern Regional College prioritises individualised attention and support, fostering a nurturing atmosphere conducive to academic success.

A Levels - Biology, Chemistry, Maths, AS Level - Business

“I heard about SRC’s A-Level Academy through school and researched courses on offer and the College’s results record. For the science subjects which I was interested in studying, SRC had great success in the past. I also loved the freedom offered by College with regards to studying outside of class. I also felt this prepared me for university as it was my own responsibility to study outside of class rather than school which had set study periods”.

“I’m now studying pharmacy at Queens University Belfast. I took a gap year after A-Levels to figure out the best degree for me. I had a few options but wasn’t sure which route to pursue. In my gap year I worked in Boots and enjoyed the pharmacy side a lot and this led me to apply for pharmacy and I haven’t looked back”!

SRC Retains

‘Best in UK’ Title at WorldSkills UK

Following a tense week of competitions, Southern Regional College were named as the best performing College in the UK for the second consecutive year at the WorldSkills UK competition. The College topped the leaderboard in both points awarded and for the highest number of medals won.

SRC students competed across multiple venues in the Greater Manchester area, with results being announced in a livestreamed ceremony at Manchester’s Bridgewater Hall, hosted by presenter Edith Bowman.

Competitors from the College were revealed as winning twelve medals in total; five gold, three silver and four bronze. Students undertook intense training for months prior to the event, taking on additional study and practice sessions under the guidance of the College’s lecturing staff.

SRC Student Over the Moon to Win NASA Place

Houston calling for SRC student who won place at prestigious space programme for young people

As we write, student Lee Johnston is getting the real NASA experience in Houston, Texas after winning a coveted place in the United Space School competition.

The 18-year-old applied science student from Lurgan has joined a team of students from all over the world studying at the University of Clear Lake, next to the NASA Johnson Space Centre.

Lee, along with fellow students, will design a 'Mission to Mars' under the mentorship of engineers, scientists and leaders in the aerospace industry. He will also learn about how zero gravity affects the human body, how propulsion systems work and the laws of space.

Prior to jetting across the world, Lee commented that he was excited to win the opportunity to go to Houston, which he described as a ‘bucket list’ activity. Lee’s goal is to eventually work at the European Space Agency. This experience will undoubtably be a huge help in propelling him towards a career in astrophysics.

Laura Martin, Curriculum Area Manager for the Faculty of Health and Science commented: "Lee is among of a handful of people in UK and Ireland who have been selected for this opportunity. This educational experience will not only enhance his academic and personal growth but will also distinguish him professionally, setting him apart from others."

Simulation demonstrations of HEMS capabilities and equipment.

• Hazardous Area Response Team (HART) simulation demonstrations looking at capabilities and equipment.

• Observational placement with Patient Care Services (PCS) crew and responding to a variety of non-urgent incidents and observing care provided by NIAS PCS staff.

Professor Dave Clarke, Head of the RCN Prince of Wales Nursing Cadet Scheme, Royal College of Nursing said:

“We were so excited to launch the scheme in Northen Ireland and were overwhelmed by the response to our call for students. We are all very proud of the cadets who were successful in applying for the course and who have gone on to complete the programme”.

“The RCN Prince of Wales Nursing Cadets scheme is making a real difference to the lives of young people, opening doors to careers in health care and teaching vital skills for their future.”

FinTech Level 5 Foundation Degree Higher Level Apprenticeship (HLA) - First Derivative

“After completing my A-levels, I applied for the FinTech Level 5 Foundation Degree Higher Level Apprenticeship. It’s been an excellent opportunity to combine on the job training with studying at College - without the loans and huge debt which comes from studying at university. The HLA has allowed me to learn a huge amount whilst developing new skills and personal work related qualities. My HLA has offered me access to industries that are either very competitive or difficult to enter through the traditional university route. This made the HLA an excellent choice for me”.

Conor Woods

Caitlin McAlernon

Level 3 Apprenticeship in Electrical Maintenance - Hyster Yale

“I learnt the hard way that education is important. After leaving school, I worked on building sites across the UK, Ireland and Australia. To gain a better job on returning to Northern Ireland, I knew I needed to return to education to improve my skill set. I’m now undertaking the Electrical Maintenance Apprenticeship to gain new knowledge. I would recommend an apprenticeship to anyone. You are never too old to go back and learn something new. If it’s something you want to do, go do it!”

Mia McParland

Hospitality and Tourism Management with Specialisms Level 5 Foundation Degree

“I started my Hospitality & Tourism Foundation Degree after completing my A-Levels. It’s a really fascinating course as I’m learning about the hospitality and tourism industry today, and being taught modules on entrepreneurship, human resources and financial accounting – so it’s really varied. The sector is massive; it makes you realise the amount of great jobs there is within it. There is so much potential in the travel and tourism sector nowadays with the main driving force being technology and sustainability. I chose the foundation degree as I knew it would be more beneficial for me than other routes. It’s worked out cheaper studying part-time and I’m getting lots of opportunities through SRC that I don’t think I would have received elsewhere”.

Sam Thompson

Level 2 Professional Chef Traineeship - IFEX Bronze Medallist

“From undertaking the Traineeship I’ve developed better organisation and time management skills. There can be a lot going on in the kitchen. You can be bouncing from the oven to the fryer, prepping an item, whilst cooking another menu item. What can be stressful is all manageable with good preparation and organisational skills”.

“I’m gaining lots of experience whilst undertaking the Traineeship, through work placements to the professional chefs lecturing at the College. The whole experience has been invaluable. It’s even helped me win the bronze medal at IFEX 2024, Northern Ireland’s biennial culinary arts exhibition”.

Financial Support

At Southern Regional College we believe that finance should not be a barrier to learning. The great news is that there is more help available than ever before to finance your journey in education.

“My career journey is somewhat different to others in that I chose to leave one career and move to a totally different field. I’m currently a Special Education Needs assistant in a local primary school working alongside a teacher to support and meet the needs of a child . As a mature student, I was quite anxious about returning to College to further my studies. I was encouraged by the smaller class sizes at SRC compared to those at university and that I could study part-time, learning at my own pace. I also felt the College could provide me with the perfect environment to learn, to feel comfortable around my peers and give me the confidence to participate in group work and seminars”.

SRC Careers Service Celebrates Matrix Quality Standard Achievement

Southern Regional College support services have once again successfully achieved the Matrix Quality Standard, the international benchmark for organisations that offer information, advice and guidance (IAG) as part of their core services or activities. Celebrating Brigid Shaw

Brigid (Breege) Shaw is a walking history book. Born and raised in Armagh, she travelled to England to study nursing, became an examiner, was an education officer for trade unions, and came full circle back to Northern Ireland.

Despite all these tremendous achievements, Brigid has spent the past twenty years of her life tutoring individuals in dressmaking at Southern Regional College. Brigid, who turned eighty in January, began

her teaching career at SRC on the day she turned sixty.

Since retiring from nursing, Brigid is never too far away from the classroom, being a great believer in “sewing for the mind”. Brigid’s biggest accomplishment is herself. Having left school with no qualifications, she now has stacks of them.

With nursing as her background, Brigid has seen how sewing can improve people’s mental health. As

his colleague Sinead Boyle to the award. Keith teaches on a range of hospitality and patisserie courses and is a former student at the College. Keith and his colleague Sinead faced a grilling by a panel of independent judges in June and were left to ‘sweat it out in the kitchen’ until September when results were finally revealed.

Elsewhere, student Claire Ward who graduated from the College with the University Ulster Foundation

Brigid says, “with sewing you don’t think about what’s on your mind.”

Over the years Brigid has seen how people have transformed their lives through taking up a hobby and has taught people across the southern region and in community and outreach centres, the art of needlework. Brigid has even been requested to create living history quilts for prominent politicians in Northern Ireland and many of her former students now teach their own classes.

Degree in Hospitality & Tourism with Specialisms, picked up the ‘Student Management Potential Award’ and former student Colleen Lennon from hospitality business ‘The Oliver’ was a finalist in the Independent Chef of the Year category.

Southern Regional College offers students the ability to learn through a range of hospitality courses, from recreational courses, traineeships, apprenticeships and degree level courses.

Chris Hobson, Curriculum Area Manager at the College commented: “Brigid is a true inspiration to all. She is always willing to get the community involved and never takes no for an answer. Her determination is infectious to all. Her passion is engaging with those who have been disengaged with education for most of their life. Giving them a ‘can do’ attitude to succeed and to become lifelong learners.”

SRC Team Up With Down GAA for Sports Academy

Students at Southern Regional College had a unique opportunity to be part of a sports academy with Down GAA

The College worked alongside stakeholders in Down GAA, Ulster GAA and Newry City Athletic Football Club to enhance students learning and work experience opportunities. This academy is in addition to the College’s successful volleyball academy and football academies.

Within the Academy, students can undertake:

• Player development – twice weekly training sessions together with strength and conditioning sessions, plus league matches;

• Coaching development – a foundation coaching award before commencing primary school coaching sessions;

• Sports analysis – video analysis of players’ movements using STATSports GPS pods and provide performance feedback and suggestions.

The academy is open to any student wanting to play, coach or analyse Gaelic or football.

Conor O’Toole, Down GAA Games Development Manager commented:

“In recent times we have been fortunate enough to have had

some wonderful young students from the College, join our staff on academic work placement or as coaches within our Summer Camp programmes.

We see this relationship with SRC as a wonderful avenue for Down GAA to unearth a strong cohort of engaging, enthusiastic and highly skilled young people who can further promote Gaelic Games in local primary schools and GAA clubs in the greater Newry area and beyond.

Within this programme the pupils will have the opportunity to complete official GAA coaching awards, young referees training and also gain exposure to practical coaching opportunities in local schools.”

Level 3 Bricklaying Apprenticeship

“I’m currently in my fourth year at SRC having progressed from the Level 2 Bricklaying Apprenticeship. I’m finding the Level 3 a lot more interesting. It’s a step up from Level 2 and definitely offers the ‘building blocks’ for a career in bricklaying. The Level 2 deals with bricklaying principles - building cavity / solid walls, to constructing arches. The Level 3 is more complicated as you need to be comfortable with numbers and measurements, dealing with angles, reading plans and setting out where sites are built. Plus, there’s the added bonus of building decorative features”.

“At the College I’ve gotten involved in WorldSkills competitions which has been a great opportunity. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed my time at the College and am considering returning to study stonemasonry”.

Committed to UN Sustainable Development Goals: The College is commitment to being a sustainable College. We share learnings with other institutions, and report annually on progress made to ensure the College remains transparent in efforts to evoke real change .
