Traineeships are a perfect pathway for those wanting to achieve a full level 2 qualification while gaining additional transversal and digital skills and a work placement experience. Traineeships allow students to get direct industry experience while studying as a full-time student. This means you can also avail of the financial support, travel and free school meals provided to full-time students*. The Traineeship is designed to allow you to transition to an Apprenticeship during your programme of learning, should you gain employment. The College will work with you to secure an Apprenticeship should you wish to do so.

I, like so many others, welcome the easement of Covid mitigation measures over recent months and am delighted that our students have been able to return to campus for faceto-face delivery during the year. SRC welcomes over 12,000 students annually, providing access to a wide range of courses that deliver the foundation for independent lifelong learning and a pathway to new opportunities and careers. Our ethos as an education provider is one where the needs of individual students come first, through access to first class teaching and learning and support where this is needed. We aim to build confidence in our students by motivating them to take decisions and to reflect on the learning process at all stages, thus better preparing them for the world of work.

We are delighted for 2022 to be able to offer a huge selection of part-time courses with absolutely NO TUITION FEE. These accredited courses offer individuals the ability to gain a valued and recognised qualification at a fraction of the normal cost. Those enrolling on these programmes will be required to pay any exam, registration and materials fees connected with the cost of the course, but all tuition is completely FREE. Courses are offered across all our campuses and several community outcentres and well as through eCampus.

Tiling Student Aaron to Represent the UK at the WorldSkills Final in China Southern Regional College student, Aaron Gillespie has been selected to represent the UK at the WorldSkills Final in Shanghai, China later this year. Dubbed as the ‘Skills Olympics’ the international competition is biennial and rewards excellence in technical qualifications. Alongside his 38 teammates, Aaron will face rivals from 80 countries to bring home gold in his field of wall and floor tiling. Training for this competition began in January 2020. Originally scheduled for 2021, the pandemic forced the Shanghai finals back by a year. In 2019, Aaron was awarded third place in the national finals at WorldSkills and last November he successfully won first place in the wall and floor tiling category at the national finals. As a hub for skills excellence, WorldSkills UK brings together young people, industry leaders and education providers to celebrate the value of technical education and training. Drawn from a diverse range of skills and backgrounds, Aaron and his fellow teammates are united in their common goal to win and inspire others to develop a passion for skills-based training.

Campus Development Investing in Your Future Southern Regional College continues to build a strong educational future and focus across Armagh and Down, with two new landmark campuses in Armagh and Banbridge having opened their doors to students in September 2020. We have also obtained full planning consent to create a new campus in Craigavon as well as progressing with innovative plans to expand our existing East Campus in Newry. Last year, we acquired the Newry sports centre site from Newry, Mourne & Down District Council. This acquisition is the first stage of the College’s plans to expand our existing Newry East Campus, which is adjacent to this site, and pave the way for the creation of a new Higher Education and Innovation Centre. It is an exciting development for Southern Regional College and the city of Newry and will provide increased training and skills opportunities for our citizens.

The new Craigavon Campus represents a £45 million investment by Southern Regional College in partnership with the Department for the Economy. This landmark campus will support hundreds of new jobs during construction, create more than 350 new local apprenticeship opportunities annually and underpin the College’s status as a major employer in the area. Southern Regional College was assessed by the National Autistic Society, with lecturers and support staff observed on their practice and a review of individual support plans. The assessment found that departments within the college work well collaboratively to ensure adaptions and adjustments are provided for autistic students; while there has also been significant investment in technology to help promote independent learning; and the development of clear systems which allows for consistent information sharing on the needs of individual students. Autism Accreditation is an autism-specific quality assurance programme. It was set up by the National Autistic Society in 1992 to improve the support available to autistic people in organisations throughout the UK and across the world, including local authorities, NHS trusts, education authorities, schools, colleges and more. To gain Accreditation, organisations have to meet a standard of excellence and follow a framework for continuous self-examination and development. Over 500 organisations are now accredited.

What is eCampus? eCampus will allow courses to be delivered through the following types of study:

The concession fee payable will be a minimum of £35 and all exam/material fees must be paid in addition to the concession fee.

Other Funding We want you to enjoy and make the most of your time at SRC. As above, if your parttime course is accredited*, there are several funds available which you can apply to. These can help you pay for course fees, travel, books, childcare or living expenses.

1. Hardship Fund To apply for the Hardship Fund, you must be 18 years or older and enrolled on a part-time accredited* course. The level of funding provided will be based on household income thresholds. Students on means tested benefits may be entitled to a repayment of the full course fees paid. Students with income below £33,950, may be entitled to a repayment of at least 50% of course fees paid. Application forms for the Hardship Fund will be available at campus receptions from the start of September 2022.

2. Further Education (FE) Grant Students who are 19 years old by 1st July, who are on a low income or in receipt of a means tested benefit, can apply for a ‘Further Education Grant’ to help pay for course fees. Courses eligible must be more than 8 hours per week or have a full-time equivalent programme. Students must also be progressing to a more advanced level of study. You may also receive a grant of £265 for books and equipment. This grant is also means tested. Application forms are available from campus receptions or can be downloaded from https://www. eani.org.uk/feapplication. Please note the closing date for the FE Grant is 30 September 2022.

Student Loan Company - Higher Education Grant and Loan (a) Tuition Fee and Maintenance Grant Higher Education students can apply for a means tested Maintenance Grant (non-repayable) up to £3,475 for a full-time student or up to £1,230 for a part-time student. Students who do not qualify for a full Tuition Fee Grant, can apply for the outstanding fee via the Tuition Fee Loan option. (b) Tuition Fee Loan Students can also apply for Tuition and Maintenance Loans which are nonmeans tested but are repayable. The amount of loan varies; however, a full-time student can receive up to £4,840 per year living away from home and £3,750 per year living at home. A part-time student can receive up to £3,022.50. Students who already hold a qualification which is equivalent or higher than the new qualification being undertaken will not be eligible for the undergraduate grant or loan. This award acknowledges the excellence and originality by employers, working with training providers, in the delivery of apprenticeship training. Over the past 16 years, MGP have recruited 63 apprenticeships covering level 2,

level 3 and most recently Higher Level Apprenticeships, all of whom have been vital to advancing the success and growth of MGP. Apprenticeships are taking the company to the next level, introducing new aspects to the business, and winning unique projects. As the economy continues to grow, SRC look forward to continuing their work with MGP and providing individuals with opportunities locally to further develop their career.

Misconceptions about gender specific roles are gradually diminishing with a growing number of women choosing a career in construction. Colleen Rafferty, a former student of SRC, is leading the way and inspiring young girls to follow in her path. Colleen commented: “I studied all the usual subjects at school. I worked in the evenings, weekends, and summer holidays with my brother. I really enjoyed working alongside him and decided that I wanted to work in the plumbing sector when I left school. I enrolled at SRC to study Plumbing & Heating in September 2017 and continued to work with my brother throughout my training. Plumbing

Accepting Your Place If you hold a FIRM offer for a Further Education, Traineeship or Apprenticeship course, you must register for your course on Wednesday 31 August 2022. If you receive a FIRM offer following upload of your GCSE results, you will also be required to register on this date. “I have always had an interest in science, studying both Chemistry and Biology at GCSE and A-Level. I enjoyed the practical aspect of these subjects, which was the main reason I applied for the Higher Level Apprenticeship at Southern Regional College. This course allows me to work 4 days a week as an apprentice in the ‘Quality Control Serum Production Department’ at

Randox Laboratories and study at SRC one day a week. I get paid and have no student debts to worry about, which was a massive selling point! Being part of a real working laboratory is great because I’m not only developing my core scientific knowledge, but I am also

learning some crucial professional skills like effective communication with my colleagues, and the ability to work to a deadline. At SRC, I can then focus on my academic skills.”

“I choose to study the Foundation Degree in Sports at SRC due to the natural progression of courses available here. I was first introduced to SRC when I completed the School Partnership Programme while studying at Banbridge High School. I have progressed from the Level 2 in Sport, onto the Level 3 and am now currently on the Level 5 programme. The familiarity of the College

“SRC has options for everyone. I first enrolled on a patisserie course to help pursue my passion for cooking. As a mother of three young children, this course was ideal as it was only one night a week. Since then, I have completed the Professional Cookery level 2 and then progressed to the level 3. Traineeships The Perfect Pathway To Your Career Completing your GCSEs? Need a career change? Look no further than our Traineeships at Level 2. Aimed at both school leavers and adults who aspire to work within a specific sector, Traineeships will give you the skills and qualifications necessary to secure employment in a chosen occupation. with their degrees at the College’s Higher Education Graduation Ceremony on 2 September 2022 and many hope to continue their educational journey by applying to Master’s programmes within Northern Ireland and across the globe. Others hope to move into lecturing roles and others seek new employment opportunities.

Northern Ireland’s Further Education Colleges join national campaign to support local communities Southern Regional College, alongside the other five Further Education Colleges have joined a national initiative to help staff and students support and connect with local communities. The Good for ME Good for FE campaign has already generated £1 million worth of social value via a programme of community action including volunteering, fundraising and charitable partnerships. Over 100 Colleges from across the UK have joined the campaign which builds on the success of FE Foodbank Friday which saw colleges come together to collect almost

47,000 items for local foodbanks. With demand for Foodbanks remaining high in Northern Ireland, this activity will continue as part of Good for ME Good for FE, to ensure that communities continue to be supported with basic food needs. In addition, staff and students who are keen to undertake voluntary and fundraising activities will be supported to do so.

Former SPP student carves out a career in Joinery at SRC Jordan Mark, a former SRC student from Rathfriland has returned to SRC as a full-time joinery lecturer at Greenbank Campus. Jordan first attended SRC as part of School Partnership Programme (SPP) while he was studying at Rathfriland High School. Jordan studied Joinery and Tiling as part of SPP. At the end of the two-year programme, Jordan was awarded ‘Best in School’ and ‘Best in Subject’ at the SPP awards due to the significant talent and skills he displayed throughout the course. Following this, he continued his education at SRC and enrolled on the Level 2 in Joinery. Jordan excelled at SRC and added to his trophy collection by successfully qualifying in the regional and national

WorldSkills finals. Since finishing his education, Jordan has spent time working in London and has been employed by companies such as Annett & Ingram Construction and 3 Interiors. Jordan has now returned to SRC with a wealth of industry experience and knowledge and hopes to share his knowledge, skills and experience with the students he will now teach.

Success for SRC Ladies Volleyball Team

Southern Regional College ladies’ volleyball team were this year crowned winners of the Schools Cup. The SRC team took on Dalriada School, Ballymoney and Lurgan College in the quarter and semi-finals, securing wins in both matches to then face Portadown College in the final. It was a close game with each team going point to point, but the SRC ladies successfully edged forward with a 25-22 win. SRC Captain, Emma Duke, led the team and has been selected to play for the Northern Ireland Under 19 Women’s team.

Students who do not attend their course of study may also be offered a refund, however, in accordance with the College Fees Policy, a £30 administration fee may be applied before the refund is issued if the student does not give the College a minimum of 5 working days’ notice before the course commences.
