Welcome From the Chief Executive
Welcome to Southern Regional College’s virtual Higher Education Graduation Ceremony 2021. As we all continue to navigate our way through the current Covid-19 pandemic this is clearly not the ceremony we would have planned for you. However, it is only right that we gather with you, albeit virtually, to celebrate your graduation and to pay tribute to you having completed your programme of learning despite the many challenges that Covid has thrown up. I have enormous admiration for your patience and resilience having ‘stayed the journey’ to achieve the diplomas and degree qualifications we recognise today. I extend a very warm welcome to all our graduands for whom this rite of passage represents a culmination of several years’ hard work, dedication and commitment. I’m also delighted many of your parents, relatives and friends have also gathered in front of computer screens and smart phones to celebrate your achievement. When I was reviewing the list of graduands prior to today’s ceremony it highlighted
for me the diversity of learners that attend our College with many of you coming from different social, cultural and educational backgrounds. Whatever your journey has been, it is this diverse makeup of our student body that illustrates the importance of what we do as a College in widening participation in an ever changing higher education system. Let us not forget that progression to higher education via the traditional academic route of A Levels continues to be viewed by many, as the only realistic way of obtaining relevant and meaningful higher level skills and qualifications. Your very presence online today dispels that myth. Many of you have progressed through our adult access programme, have combined work with part-time study, have undertaken one of our new higher apprenticeships or have progressed to full-time study having left school. The role that the regional colleges play in helping to develop relevant higher level skills across the region should neither be underestimated nor taken for granted I stood on the graduation ceremony platform at the Armagh City Hotel over 10 years ago setting out an ambitious plan to create a modern world class College that would meet the needs of future students across the region. This plan included the development of replacement campus buildings in Armagh, Banbridge and a new campus in central Craigavon replacing our existing campuses in Lurgan and Portadown. I am delighted to say we have successfully opened our new campus buildings Armagh and Banbridge in the mouth of the Covid pandemic. Later this year I also hope to see the commencement of the new Craigavon campus thus ensuring the successful completion of the first phase of our estates strategy that I set out back in 2009. We have also turned our attention to the second phase of our estates strategy that aims to consolidate and rationalise the number of campuses in Newry City through the development of a new Higher Education and Innovation HUB adjacent to our East Campus

building. It is no exaggeration to say that the investment being made by the Department for the Economy of nearly £100m in these new builds, will help transform the educational and training opportunities for future generations across the region that we serve. These developments will also act a catalyst for the expansion of our higher education offer through an increased delivery of honours degree and postgraduate qualifications. You too can be proud of what we have achieved and I hope that these developments will inspire you to continue your learning journey with us in the future. Graduands, today is your day in the academic spotlight - it is a time for celebration, a time to reflect on your success, but we should remember also that you have had some help along the way. There is an old proverb that says: ‘When eating a fruit, think of the person who planted the tree.’ Sharing in your success today are two groups who ‘planted that tree and helped it grow’ and without whom this celebration would not be possible. Your families and friends have been there to provide emotional, practical – perhaps even financial – support during your years of study, while the staff of the College (both lecturing and support staff), have worked with you to ensure that you’ve had the best possible learning experience. So on your behalf, I want to thank them all for the contribution they have made to your success.
