ast weekend we had a tough, one-point loss in double OT and it was a tough one. We knew the CoE would keep coming, and they did. The game was close the whole time and the over times were exciting, except we lost and so it felt so bad. Congratulations to them, they had a heck of a weekend and we learnt things and look to bounce back this weekend. Our last weekend and our last game for the season to get that elusive home win. We played Frankston only a couple of weeks ago and came back from a first quarter deficit to get the win. Both teams were missing players who all should be back this weekend. Congratulations to Steph Reid on winning gold at the World University games recently. It’s another game that will come down to the last couple of minutes and we will get our first home win for the season! Go Sabres.

SOUTHERN SABRES v FRANKSTON BLUES Amelia Todhunter had 18 points and 8 rebounds v BA CoE.

ANDREW POTTER – Head Coach

Rachel Jarry had 25 points, 10 rebounds and 4 steals in another great game v BA CoE at home last weekend.

Amy O’Neill had 25 points and 5 rebounds v BA CoE.

BUILD BETTER BASKETBALL IN BAYSIDE The Southern Basketball Association (SBA) needs $2.5 million before work can start on the construction of the much-needed 4 new courts. Bayside Council is currently designing and seeking the relevant approvals for the project for which other government funding is needed. We need your support to demonstrate that Bayside needs these courts. We need to work with council to advocate for the funds. The SBA has committed $2 million to the new courts and Bayside Council has allocated $5.4 million in its forward budget. The project cost is $9.9 million.

To get the funding required, we URGENTLY need YOUR help in getting petitions signed. The current courts are at capacity with kids who want to play being turned away every week and match time being reduced to allow existing teams to compete. This is unacceptable for such an important central community facility. Petitions are available for signing at the Cheltenham courts (150 Tulip Street) and through the 12 domestic clubs. Forms will be presented to Bayside Council who, with us, are seeking the remaining funds. Please sign and encourage your friends, family, colleagues and others to also sign. To have a form sent to you (to print), please email Vicki at crm@southernbasketball.com.au Please make sure you (and others) only sign the petition ONCE (not on multiple forms) and it must be legible. NOTE: A person must be over 18 years of age to sign the petition. Please share this notice with others to encourage them to also sign the petition.

Please sign the petition!

PREVIEW: Round 15 NBL1 – MEN

SOUTHERN SABRES v FRANKSTON BLUES

W

hat a year it’s been. After a gruelling inaugural NBL1 season the Sabres men say goodbye for 2019. It would be easy to talk about the misfortune and adversity, but much better to talk about what this season meant for junior development, reshaping the club culture, and setting up a senior program for future success. True credit goes to all the athletes and staff who committed to getting into the gym day after day, to get better, and create an environment where each other could get the most out of playing basketball in the second-best league in the country. It was a joy watching Sabres juniors get the experience of playing against pros, up and coming superstars showcasing their talents before the NBL, NBL veterans showing what it means to be pros, role players giving their all, and sending off one of Australia’s most charismatic personalities into retirement. Last week the team found some form that accompanied a feeling of ‘finally having our team together’. Chemistry, pace, three-point shooting, execution, and a noticeable passion lead to a victory over the extremely talented CoE. Rhys Carter, Dave Barlow, Kingsley Box and Sam McDaniel were all big contributors once again, but it was the effort and attitude of the bench that made it a true team victory. Going down 11 points early in the fourth quarter there was a resolve by the group to band together to get over the line, and the Sabres victory song rang loud and proud from the locker room that afternoon.

This afternoon, we welcome the Frankston Blues, one of the few teams we see twice in the schedule. With myself away for U16 AJC in Darwin, the previous meeting between the two teams saw a convincing win by Frankston. Their big talented front court of NBL posts in Dan Trist and Majok Majok were too much for the undersized Sabres. Plus, Blues import Damon Bozeman found his touch from beyond the arc, and Najeal Young was ruthless in transition and on the offensive boards. The Sabres will be playing for Orange Pride, and a win total that defies the tumultuous season 2019 was. Expect the men to come out and compete hard for the fans that enthusiastically supported them all year. A sincere thank you to all involved behind the scenes (especially Vicki, Sophie and Nathan in the office), Team Manager Graeme Ralph. Assistants Steve and Cal, these highcharacter athletes, and all those who contributed this year. Go Sabres! NATHAN COOPER-BROWN – Head Coach

David Barlow continued his great season with a game high 26 points and 5 rebounds v BA CoE last weekend.

After a long and successful career, today Rhys Carter plays his last Professional/Semi Professional game. Congratulations Rhys! Pictured v BA CoE last week.
