Christmas in ...
Kinsale
Welcome!
... to our 2019 Christmas in Kinsale magazine, which we hope will be a lovely complement to your lovely town’s festive season. It’s once more packed with news, events, food and fun ideas for a great festive season in the town, which is Ireland’s southern gateway to the Wild Atlantic Way. First off, our ‘What’s On’ guide will give you a good idea of what Christmas events are planned for the area, while local personalities talk about their seasonal traditions and memories in our ever-popular Christmas Q&As. We also look back at an eventful year for the town which saw a busy year for businesses and residents alike. We also have a great gift guide – specially for townspeople, to ensure that all the items mentioned can be purchased on your doorstep. And why not test how good your local knowledge is with a special Kinsale Christmas Quiz? Our Kinsale magazine also carries ads from many local businesses, who rely on a strong Christmas trade, so we urge our all our readers to shop locally as much as they possibly can – a message being taken on board with a special campaign by Cork County Council this year, too. We hope you enjoy this year’s magazine and we’re open to suggestions as to how we can make it even better next year. A total of 12,000 copies have been inserted
into The Southern Star newspaper this week, and in addition we will be distributing additional copies doorto-door to households, hotels, shops, supermarkets, restaurants, pubs and cafés in and around the town. All of us here at The Southern Star wish you, your families and everyone in Kinsale a peaceful Christmas and a prosperous New Year. Enjoy!

A warm welcome from the Chamber On behalf of Kinsale Chamber of Tourism & Business, I would like to extend a warm welcome to all our visitors and people returning home to Kinsale for the festive season. Kinsale is magical this time of year with wonderful lights and Christmas trees throughout the town and of course the mast with its star shining brightly dedicated to the late Eileen Murphy, a stalwart of the Tidy Towns Committee. Thank you to the Christmas lights Committee, Tidy Towns and to all businesses for going the extra mile again this year ensuring Kinsale looks its best at Christmas. With free parking for two hours in Kinsale throughout December, we encourage everyone to ‘shop local’ for Christmas as there are so many unique boutiques and galleries, many with special promotions and seasonal offers. If you don’t get a chance to browse the shops in Kinsale, check out www.kinsale.ie as many of our members have onlne shops and ship
worldwide. You can also follow us on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram for some seasonal messages from Kinsale Chamber members. Many Kinsale hotels and restaurants have Christmas party nights and seasonal menus creating a winter buzz in town. There is live music seven nights a week in Kinsale, with entertainment to suit all tastes. See our calendar of events in this magazine for details of many more events and activities. Details of church services, sporting events and party nights are continually updated on www.kinsale.ie. We are also working on our headline festivals and events calendar for next year. We hope that you enjoy your time in Kinsale, whether it is for lunch and some shopping or a longer stay. And of course to local people and businesses, we look forward to working together to promote Kinsale in 2018. And, on behalf of the Chamber, we would also like to take this opportunity to congratulate all the local businesses that have won awards this year.

q&A
L
Adrian Wistreich Director of Future Kinsale Co-op
When do you start getting excited about Christmas? I’m not a big fan, to be honest. Between the age of 8 and 13 I was a chorister at a boarding school in London. By the time I got home my parents had cleared Christmas away and I missed the shared fun of a family Christmas all those years. It took a long time to get over that, and so I’m just not good at becoming excited about it.
Name three celebrities that you’d invite to your Christmas get-together, and why?
Charles Dickens – I’d have to talk about A Christmas Carol with the man who wrote it. Tommie Tiernan – someone to laugh about the Nativity with. Dame Judi Dench – I bet she could fill the day with wonderful stories.
One year, I got a Swiss Army penknife & felt I’d won the lotto
Tell us one New Year’s resolution that you’ve managed to keep? Any plans for 2020 resolutions?
In 1989 I had a resolution to become a father during the following year, which came to pass. For 2020, I have a resolution to learn to ‘let go’ more so that the important things in my life are given the space they deserve and the unimportant things which have heretofore taken too much of my time are pushed to the margins.
What was your favourite thing about the past year?
Walking from Pisa to Siena was pretty good, helping to set up Future Kinsale Co-operative was also a great feeling, and publishing my novel, ‘Miriam’, in February was a real buzz.
You have mulled wine and you’re under the mistletoe – who would you most like to have with you?
What is your favourite childhood memory of Christmas?
The only woman I’ve ever wanted to share my life with. The one who is fighting hard just now for her health. The one who picked me up in a bar on Mykonos 34 years ago …
On Christmas Night, the Dean of Westminster, dressed in his cassock, used to draw gifts out of a barrel and each boy in the school would be called up to collect one – but it was pot luck what you got. One year, I got a Swiss Army penknife and felt I’d won the lotto.
What would you get Boris Johnson for Christmas? Why?
A phial of arsenic so he can die in the ditch he belongs in (And I was born British – got my Irish citizenship after the Brexit referendum), but to avoid being arrested, perhaps I would get him a one-way ticket to North Korea…
If you could change one thing about Christmas Day, what would it be and why?
I’d substitute the traditional turkey for fillet of beef, or leg of lamb, or turbot, or roast suckling pig, or even a free-range chicken … but that’s not the majority opinion in our house.
What is the oldest Christmas decoration that you still use?
My 29-year-old daughter made a Christmas crib out of toilet rolls and felt with her nannie 27 years ago. We still display that each year.
Regardless of tradition, what would your ideal Christmas dinner be? Tiger prawns then lamb steak, cooked on the barbecue, followed by a great stilton and cheese biscuits, expresso and a good Nero D’Avola.
What is your favourite seasonal song?
I’m a sucker for ‘Fairytale of New York’ by The Pogues & Kirsty McColl.
Where in the world (apart from home) would you like to be on December 25th, and why?
Maybe Necker Island, if Richard Branson has finished doing the renovations, or alternatively, I’d be happy with Sanur Beach in Bali.

Kinsale News Review

Literary festival
Kinsale’s very own literary festival boasted an impressive line-up of well-known writers for what was a feast of fantastic literature. Now in its third year, well-known writers including Emilie Pine, Donal Ryan and James Smith descended on the town in October. The festival boasted over 30 guest authors and as well as readings there was plenty for book lovers including workshops, panel discussions and children’s events. Festival goers also got to experience the artistry of Irish graphic novelists and illustrators that were on display at the Graphic Book Fair. President Higgins with Kinsale Community School Head Boy Cathal Flynn and Head Girl Victoria Bollard; Principal Fergal McCarthy and the Chairperson of the Board of Management Sr Rita Twomey who made a special presentation to the President on the occasion of his visit to the School. KCS welcomes president
President Michael D Higgins paid a welcome visit to Kinsale Community School in November as part of an official visit to the town. Following a speech in the new sports hall – which has now being named after him – he unveiled a sculpture of the 1916 Proclamation, made by local company Graepel Engineering, who were commissioned by the school to create the sculpture. While at the school he also unveiled plaques on the KCS Wall of Fame to coincide with the designation of the ‘Michael D Higgins Hall’ within the building..

Michelin Star
Kinsale got its first Michelin Star in October when Bastion, run by Paul and Helen McDonald, secured the coveted award at the awards ceremony in London. Chef Paul told The Southern Star that the restaurant got over 200 emails in just 12 hours from people looking to reserve a spot in their popular restaurant. He said the key to securing a Michelin Star is having consistently good dishes and balance. Michelin inspectors praised Paul for his ‘pared-back cooking and use of local ingredients.’ Within months of opening in 2014, Bastion secured a Bib Gourmand.
At the meeting to discuss the launch in Kinsale of a community co-operative project were Dan Joe Coleman, Liz Moynihan, Adrian Wistreich, Liz Creed, Alan Clayton, John O’Keeffe and Sarah Jane Larkin of Future Kinsale. (Photo: John Allen)
Road to Kinsale
Future Kinsale
A group of people from different backgrounds in Kinsale came together to form a new community initiative entitled ‘Road to Kinsale.’ Their aim is to bring a Syrian family to live and settle in Kinsale and help them with integrating into the community rather than enter a traditional emergency reception and orientation centre. The group have already been fundraising to provide an arrival and settlement plan for the family on arrival and they held a very successful community-based fete in September at Sáile, which was well attended by people from all over Kinsale.
The people of Kinsale are leading the way in creating a healthy, sustainable future for their town with the establishment of Future Kinsale, the town’s very own co-op back in June. It is being operated as a town wide co-op, a first of its kind in Ireland. The group have ambitious plans for the town and included a recent trial of free wi-fi in the town as well as looking to create a hub for the town’s Municipal Hall. They plan to apply for grant aid and engage with local government, while also co-ordinating projects and build membership.

Plans for new library
Kinsale’s new €2.1m state-of-the-art library, which has been described as a ‘flagship project’ will open at the beginning of 2021, according to Council officials. The three-storey library, which will contain a multi-functional events space and reading rooms will be built in the James O’Neill Memorial Building (Old Mill) in Church Square. Councillors at a Bandon Kinsale Municipal District meeting were told that it will be a 12-month build which is expected to be finished in November 2020 and following a fit out for furniture and fittings it would be ready for the first quarter of 2021.
Animal rescues
The volunteer crew at Kinsale RNLI were involved in some unusual rescues during the year. Back in February, Paddy, a nine-year-old horse belonging to Paul Crowley, had to be rescued by Kinsale RNLI after he got stuck in the Bandon River. The crew used cutters to free Paddy’s hoof and he was eventually guided to safety. Paddy later made an appearance as part of the Kinsale RNLI float at the town’s St Patrick’s Day parade in March. In August the Kinsale RNLI volunteers rescued a cow called Ghost, who had fallen from a field into rocks in Kinsale harbour. Thankfully they succeeded in towing him back to shore by fitting a halter onto Ghost. Marie O’Sullivan (second from left) was elected for the Bandon/Kinsale area in the local elections. She is pictured here with family at the count centre in Clonakilty. (Photo: Martin Walsh)
Local elections
Kinsale got a new councillor in June when local café owner Marie O’Sullivan secured a third council seat for Fine Gael in Bandon Kinsale Municipal District. Cllr O’Sullivan was in fact one of three new faces at the first meeting of Bandon Kinsale Municipal District held in June. She joined Cllr Sean O’Donovan (FF) and Cllr John O’Sullivan (FG) in the newly drawn municipal district. Cllr Alan Coleman (Ind) was elected chairperson, while Cllr Kevin Murphy (FG) was elected vice chairperson. It was also the first meeting without former councillors Rachel McCarthy (SF) and James O’Donovan (FG).
Trucks going astray
A councillor claimed in July that sat-navs were sending artic trucks and buses into the heart of the town centre leading to ‘chaotic’ scenes of traffic. Cllr Kevin Murphy (FG) said that the traffic chaos had been driving local people away from the town as they couldn’t get access in there to do their shopping. He called for Cork County Council to start implementing the town’s Traffic Management Plan, which they have been waiting years for. Cllr Marie O’Sullivan (FG) said more signage was needed to advise people that the narrow streets of Kinsale are not suitable for their vehicles.
Greg Bemis, former owner of the Lusitania wreck site admires a model of the Lusitania made by Peter Szabo from Dungarvan at the Old Head of Kinsale signal tower for the anniversary of the Lusitania sinking on the 7 May 1915. (Photo: John Allen)
Lusitania
There was good news for the Lusitania Museum Old Head/ Signal Tower Heritage Ltd in May when Gregg Bemis – the owner of the Lusitania – bequeathed the ship’s wreck and its artefacts to the local group. Secretary of the group, Con Hayes had described the bequeath as ‘gobsmacking.’ Mr Bemis, who has owned the wreck of the Lusitania since the 1960s said that the time had come for him to step aside. The transfer, while not immediate, will become effective if he dies, if he writes a letter requesting it to be transferred or if the planned Lusitania museum is built.

Taking the stress out of
Entertaining by Paula Burns
Entertaining can be draining. The build up to hosting a festive get together can leave you feeling exhausted and anxious before the evening has even begun. Remember the purpose of throwing a shindig is to have an enjoyable time with friends and family. Taking a few things into consideration while prepping for the event can help to make the entire experience a positive one.
Be Realistic
This begins with the guest-list. It can be easy to get carried away from inviting Joe from work to Betty down the road. Instead of inviting the entire neighbourhood be selective. Decide who the event is for, is it just family or friends. Whichever group be aware of dynamics. Sometimes for example family get-togethers can be tricky with family dramas resulting in some members not speaking to each other. Try to avoid having them at the same party to eliminate any fear of fireworks in your living room rather then outside.
Keep it Simple
Take the minimalist approach to entertaining. In other words don’t go over the top with an extravagant themed winter wonderland party with Rudolph as star guest. It doesn’t have to be over the top. Sometimes we can get carried away thinking that we need to pull a Hyacinth Bucket by keeping up with the Joneses. This shouldn’t be the case. Keep decoration to a minimum. A few fairy lights mixed with the sparkle of the Christmas tree will create an ambiance. For music create a playlist on Spotify or iTunes that will suit your guests. If this includes friends and you all grew up in the eighties then a download of a few compilation albums will get them in the mood.
Food and Drink
Following the theme of keeping things simple this applies to the menu too. Like everything during the busy Christmas period preparation is key. Have your menu decided a week before the party. Plan something low maintenance rather then a Michelin Star type five course meal. A buffet always works well. Its informality allows your guests to pick pieces they like and it gives them a chance to mingle as they fill their plates. We all love a tasty starter and that’s the beauty of a buffet, it is essentially a feast of appetisers. Supermarkets have a great variety of frozen starter style meal packs serving old favourites like samosas, spring rolls, sausage rolls and breaded prawns. A cheese platter is another classic that will help fill plates. This is an easy one to prepare. Add an assortment of crackers and chutneys to compliment the platter. A few pizzas can be prepared in a buffet style by cutting into small slices. This can cover the vegetarian options by preparing classic margherita or veggie options. If you have a signature dish like a flavoursome chilli or chicken stroganoff this one pot meal is perfect to include in the buffet. Let guests spoon out at their leisure. Leafy salads are a no brainer. Easy with minimal preparation and a delicious favourite. When it comes to drinks gin and prosecco seem to be the front-runners for most. People have fallen for the allure of drinking craft gins from a fish bowl type glass topped with a slice of cucumber to finish off the effect. Prosecco has taken over from Champagne in the bubbly sphere, which is great news when it comes to our pockets. Have a couple of slabs of beer and a bottle or two of red on standby. But remember in general people will always bring a bottle of something so running out shouldn’t be a worry. By decking the halls with simplicity you will be able to enjoy an evening of yuletide merriment without the stress.

The best Christmas ever! The Southern Star, in conjunction with The West Cork Education Centre, ran an essay competition for primary school children in the area recently with the theme ‘It was the best Christmas ever’. Here are two great examples of West Cork’s budding literary talent! It was coming up to Christmas and Becky was writing her Santa letter. Becky was 11 years old at the time and an only child. She had always wanted a baby brother. She sat down to write her letter and it went like this, ‘Dear Santa, My name is Becky and I am 11 years old. I am an only child and I have always wanted a little brother. I would LOVE to get a baby brother this year. Thank you.’
ing ready On Christmas Eve when we were gett , cookies for bed. We had just put out the milk ents told and a carrot for Santa, when my par g to spend goin e wer me and my brother that we the over e Christmas in ... DISNEYLAND, we wer the to e drov moon. We hopped into the car and airport.
So, Becky’s letter was sent. She counted the days until Christmas day. She noticed that her mom’s belly was getting bigger and bigger. She didn’t dare to hope. The next day at school Becky told all her friends about what they asked from Santa and Becky announced, ‘I asked if I could have a baby brother’. She saw all her friends playing with their sisters or brothers and it made her feel a bit sad.
rised When we got to the airport I was surp as Eve I stm ple go on holidays on Chri with how busy it was, how many peo of e my mind said ‘’ Actually quit a lot thought to myself. My mom reading t as Caitlin”. I never knew. Then we wen people go on holiday during Christm air hostess our tickets and then inside and got to gate 16. We gave the got on the plane.
That night Becky was so excited about Christmas being just a few weeks away. In the morning her Dad said, ‘Becky is it ok if on Christmas Eve that we will have to go to the hospital because …’ As Becky’s Mom appeared Becky screamed, ‘OMG Mom you ARE pregnant!’ ‘Yes’, replied Becky’s Mom with a smile. Becky was so happy she kept counting down all the days left until Christmas Eve. ‘Only one week left Mom’, said Becky, ‘I wonder if it is a girl or a boy’.

‘Good morning’, said Mom. Becky was late going to school because Becky kept thinking about girl names and boy names. Her favourite was Sam and Lilly. ‘One day left until Christmas Eve’, thought Becky to herself. ‘Mom, Dad - It’s Christmas Eve! We have to go to the hospital today’, roared Becky up the stairs. Off they went, Becky couldn’t wait! The room in the hospital was huge. Becky saw a baby shop with balloons and teddys. Becky told her dad and they decided that they would sneak over and get a teddy and a balloon for the baby.
THE END!! By Caitlin Duke. Age: 11 Gaelscoil Chionn tSáile
After they went back Becky was waiting and waiting. Then Becky heard a baby crying. Becky thought she might cry too – tears of happiness. Out her dad came and at 7.45am on Christmas day Becky’s brother had been born. They called him Noel. It really was the best Christmas ever. Katie-Rose Broderick, 5th class Scoil Naomh Eltin

Scilly Walk, Kinsale
THERE’S no better time to enjoy a stroll than on a crisp Christmas day and one of the nicest and most accessible walks in Kinsale is the Scilly Walk. This signposted pedestrian path runs for about 3km each way along the coast from Scilly (see map), facing Kinsale harbour, which runs all the way to Summercove and on to Charles Fort. From here, there are great views of both the harbour and the town. The fishing village of Scilly, now just an extension of the town, is believed to have gotten its name from settlers who came from the Scilly Isles off Land’s End in Cornwall. It’s the cute little inlet on the way to Summercove. The mostly flat walk runs right by the shoreline and arrives at the spectacular fort of Charles, an OPW site that juts out onto the harbour. From here, you can opt to continue along the route for a further distance to a rocky harbour shore. On a clear day you might even spot the Old Head from here. If you fancy a little refreshment on your trip, you will pass both the Spaniard and the Bulman bars.
