PUBLISHER Life can be viewed as a painting, and we are all artists. Each stroke we take, each color we choose can be a viewed as a reflection of our soul, and the experiences we encounter. In this issue, we learned about the process of life, determination and the hard work one has to go through during our journey. Mr. Ben Russell tells Southern Tatler his life journey and the steps he has taken to be where he is today. We had the opportunity to learn about the Jule Collins Smith Museum of Fine Art and all of the many ways it expresses various art forms and demonstrations. Each piece of art is not only about the aesthetics but also how the artist feels and how it evokes feelings from the viewer. “Philanthropy is one of the most empowering things one can do“- Sidney James Nakhjavan. Success, money and power aren’t the only things we as human should be caring about or striving for. Having these three components doesn’t necessarily make us happy. There are many other components that can make us happy. The Cary Center in Auburn, AL the headquarter for Women’s Philanthropy Board, The Phils, Camp i Care, Art of Philanthropy, taught us the feeling you get from helping other is better than any other thing money can buy. We are all artists and all start with a blank canvas it is up to us how we paint our picture of life. How we want to leave our legacy? If we choose to be happy and strive to make those around us happy? -Matthew Tse

LOCAL FOCUS CREEKWOOD CASTLE

Creekwood Castle

Hidden deep along a road lined with trees and rolling horse pastures in Auburn, Alabama is an unlikely a home, a castle of sorts. Inside is a queen, her three children, her fiancĂŠ, and lavish treasures of immense value from around the globe.

uilt over a time period of three years, this lavish castle is truly designed for royalty, and one can suggest that in Auburn that’s exactly what its owner, Ms. Mary Ann Stiles, is. Co-founder of the Lee County Junior League and a member of a multitude of various charities, Ms. Stiles designed the house herself, and with the help of a team of builders and architects, she was able to construct the home of her dreams. The house spans for 17,000 square-feet and is also complete with a scenic lake in the rear, a garden, and a pool. With a great love and appreciation for history, Ms. Stiles has filled her entire home with iconic pieces from French castles, German churches, and even a bench from the Vatican itself. “Every piece has a story,” Ms. Stiles so fondly said about each of the items in her home. Impressively enough, she knows the story behind almost every piece of furniture, trinket, or board of hardwood throughout her entire home.

Ms. Stiles’ property greets you with a semicircle driveway, perfect for hosting lavish parties and weddings. The front door is guarded with wrought-iron gates that were retrieved from an abandoned church in France, which currently stand to be about 12 feet tall but had to be shortened from their original size to fit in the doorframe. When you walk in the front doors, you will see that the ceiling of the grand foyer is painted with a Venetian Masked Ball mural. The mural was painted by the renowned portrait painter, Ronald Bayans, and in the mural, you will see that Bayans disguised himself as the painter. In the adjacent dining room, there is a shimmer that stems from the ceiling. This is a result of the 14-carat gold foil that covers the entire ceiling in the room. Fit to serve a king, the room is complete with a collection of china that is from the Oscar-winning film, Titanic. Ms. Stiles’ love for the Titanic, the ship and the film, is evident when you enter her home, as she is playing the soundtrack from the movie throughout her home and has a letter sent from the actual ship displayed in her dining room. As your move into the library from the dining room, you will feel the warmth of the

cherry-wrapped walls and ceilings of the space. The library was not originally in Ms. Stiles’ house plans, but after she purchased a cherry spiral staircase from the home of the famous pop star, Elton John, she knew she had to make a room for it. The result was the design of a turret, which is transformed into the library. The cherry staircase leads guests up to the second floor of the library where they will continue to find the walls covered in books and memorabilia that Ms. Stiles has collected throughout her lifetime. After you exit the peaceful seclusion of the library, you will be immersed in a bright kind of comfort stemming from the hardwood boards of the entire second floor. All of the wood flooring on this level of the castle is American Chestnut, and because it is now mostly non-existent, Ms. Stiles harvested different pieces from barns, old homes, and churches to make an eclectic puzzle of flooring of many different widths and lengths. The unique coloring of the wood makes the entire floor feel bright and sunny. Also on the second floor is a bedroom Ms. Stiles refers to as the “Green Room” because of the minty green color that adorns each of the

51 J U LY / A U G U S T

2015

furniture pieces in this room. This 300-yearold furniture is of French descent and was hand-carved and hand-painted. Perhaps the most impressive room in the house is the “Flag Room.” The Flag Room is decorated with a collection of American flags and military uniforms. Ms. Stiles aims to showcase the progression of the American flag, as she displays flags baring all different arrangements of stars and stripes. The oldest flag in the room is a Centennial flag that was hand-sewn in 1876. It is clear that this flag has quite the story to tell with is torn seams and battered appearance. “If I was 139-years-old, I can imagine I would look a little battered and worn too,” Ms. Stiles laughed. In the back of the room, you will find Ms. Stiles’ most recent addition to her flag collection: a flag that was flown at the United States Capitol Building in Washington, D.C. on her birthday in 2012. On the main floor of the castle, you will notice the intricate details in the crown molding and in the layout of the travertine tiles on the floor. The molding was custom designed and

handmade from plaster by Romanian plasterworkers. The travertine tiles have been left in their raw, natural state, and in each room, the tiles are laid out so that they look like large area rugs, or runners in the hallways, a concept that truly reveals Ms. Stiles’ eye for design. In the Auburn area, travertine can be found in a filled state at the Jule Collins Smith Museum, but it has also been used in the construction of the Roman Coliseum, the Getty Center in Los Angeles, and many other structures across the globe. Extending from the ceiling in the great room, you will notice the immense gothic “drips” that Ms. Stiles salvaged from a New England church and restored to look like they had always belonged in her home. Below the drips is an enormous fireplace that Ms. Stiles harvested from an actual castle in the heart of France. In the front sitting room, the smallest room of the home, the back wall is complete with a stained-glass window from a church in Nova Scotia. This window is a continuation of Ms. Stiles’ love for the Titanic, as it was

52 S OUTHERN

TAT L E R

commissioned to mark the 1-year anniversary of the Titanic’s sinking. This window is unique because it can be seen from the stairway leading to the garden level. On the garden level, guests are able to entertain themselves in the billiards room, which features a copper-foil ceiling and enormous light fixtures from the Cincinnati Opera House. As you move in to the garden-level great room, you will see a large canoe hanging from the ceiling. This piece of craftsmanship was constructed by a Canadian wood worker in 1902. The doors on this level of the castle lead out to Ms. Stiles’ extensive gardens, the lake complete with swans, and a swimming pool of course. In Ms. Stiles’ master suite, the features are fit for a queen. The antique light fixture above the sleigh bed, as well as the countertops throughout the room and bathroom, are made of Onyx, a semi-precious stone. The most impressive piece of furniture in Ms. Stiles’ suite, and maybe in her entire home, is a bench from the Vatican. The detailed carving of the black walnut, the hardest wood in the world to carve,

tells a story that is centuries old. The Vatican bench is so incredibly heavy that the floor underneath it had to be reinforced with steel beams. The other furniture in this room comes from the Vanderbilt’s home at the Biltmore and has also has been carved from black walnut. When walking through Ms. Stiles’ home, it is clear that the sword from Mel Gibson, the portrait of Stephen Austin, and the record player that was an original patent of Thomas Edison do not go together, but the house itself is telling guests a cohesive story about culture, the importance of the human touch, and the passion Ms. Stiles has for doing what she loves. She is less focused on the remarkable possessions that she has but is centered on her family, the company she keeps, and her four-legged furry friends that can be seen wandering throughout the house. “It is not the things you have around you that matters, but the people around you are what really counts,” Ms. Stiles said proudly.

Bay Limousine

BAY LIMOUSINE

hether it’s driving ten squealing, nineyear-old girls around for a birthday party, escorting a bride and groom on their wedding day, or driving a couple to dinner for their 50th wedding anniversary, a ride in a limousine is enough to light up anyone’s face, and Bay Limousine Service has been giving people this joy for more than 25 years. One of the most reputable and established limousine services in the state, Bay Limousine has been serving clients all across the Southeastern seaboard since the summer of 1990. Their professionalism and passion for serving their customers has certainly been the foundation behind their quarter century of success. Bay Limousine will make your evening or corporate meeting a stress-free and enjoyable experience and will be sure to leave a smile on your face.

Mr. Bill Hilyer and his former colleague, Steve May, opened Bay Limousine in Panama City Beach in 1990. At the time, Mr. Hilyer was spending his summers at the Bay Pointe Resort working for a beach service. He had graduated from Troy University earlier with an undergraduate degree in Education and originally planned to be a teacher and to coach basketball. However, Mr. Hilyer wanted to try out being his own boss before entering the “real world.” Mr. Hilyer and Mr. May soon recognized a need for a luxury car service in the Gulf Coast area and opened up Bay Limousine, with the understanding that Mr. Hilyer would become the sole owner of the company after one year of operation. After that year, Mr. Hilyer took on the responsibility of owning a company with Bay Limousine and brought its headquarters back to Dothan, AL—just west of his hometown of Ashford. Since the early days of Bay Limousine’s operation, the City of Dothan has been nothing

less than fully supportive of Mr. Hilyer’s dream of owning his own business. “We are blessed and fortunate to be in Dothan,” Mr. Hilyer proudly said about his community. Bay Limousine originally operated with one limousine, and now the company has over 30 cars to include corporate cars, stretch limousines, limo buses, charter buses, and two horses and carriages. Mr. Hilyer calls his company a “full-livery” service. The wide variety of vehicles Bay Limousine has, along with its outstanding and professional drivers, makes the concept of a full-livery service possible. Bay Limousine has more than 50 professional drivers, but even on busy weekends, Mr. Hilyer can be seen behind the wheel of one of his vehicles. Mr. Hilyer’s servant heart does not stop at catering to his clients. He is extremely passionate about the Make-AWish Foundation and the United Way and has previously donated vehicles and drivers to these organizations for various events. Mr. Hilyer’s heart and soul has been placed into making

58 SOUTHERN

“His favorite part of the limousine business? Seeing people happy.” his business successful, and it is this passion that drives it to be one of the most reputable limousine companies in the business. Over the past several years, Bay Limousine began to receive a large numbers of calls and requests for pick-ups in the Auburn-Opelika area. Because of the frequency of the calls, Mr. Hilyer decided to officially open an Auburn office in March of 2014. The demand for vehicles in this area, especially during football season, drove Mr. Hilyer to expand his business beyond their Dothan and Destin, FL offices. Owning a limousine company is a peoplepleasing business. Mr. Hilyer says that treating others the way you would want to be treated has been the key to his success and to his company’s continued growth. His favorite part of being in the limousine business? Seeing people happy. For many people, riding in a limousine is a special experience, and Bay Limousine is proud to be a part of that. Whether you’re in need of a horse-drawn carriage for your wedding or a

stress-free ride to the airport, Bay Limousine has a luxurious vehicle to accommodate all of your endeavors. Just as he has been good to his customers, Mr. Hilyer says, “People have been good to us.” For Bay Limousine, there is no distance too far to serve a customer. Throughout his almost 26 years of service, Mr. Hilyer says his vehicles have taken customers to Pennsylvania, New York, and Washington D.C. The sky is the limit for Bay Limousine, and because of their state-of-the-art fleet of vehicles, drivers even traveled more than 500 miles to take a group of Louisiana high school students to prom. It is no question that the reputation Bay Limousine has established is because of Mr. Hilyer and his staff ’s relentless dedication to the customer. “My wife is instrumental in making the dayto-day operations work,” Mr. Hilyer says. Bay Limousine is ‘All In’ when it comes to serving their customers and putting their best foot forward. Mr. Edwin Cherry is Mr. Hilyer’s

operations manager and has worked for Bay Limousine for the past 10 years. According to Mr. Hilyer, Bay Limousine’s busiest times of year, without question, are football and prom season. Football in the South can be everything from a family event to a social gathering to a corporate get-together, and Bay Limousine is ready to accommodate everyone’s individualized game-day needs. A driver will pick you and your party up from the location of your choosing and will gladly drive you to any tailgates or parties you are planning to attend. Bay Limousine can make your Saturdays in the Fall a fun and unforgettable experience to ensure that everyone in your party has a great time. However, the good times do not stop after football season is over. Bay Limousine is ready to accommodate rides to monthly supper clubs, New Year’s Eve parties, and date nights. Mr. Hilyer says that it never crosses many people’s minds to hire a limousine company for a social gathering, but he encourages people to call Bay Limousine for all of their party-going needs. Weddings are a social event in their own regard and are whirlwind of planning and excitement. On your wedding day, allow Bay Limousine to handle the transportation of your wedding party. Weddings can be stressful, and Bay Limousine works to eliminate the hassle of transportation with professional drivers and luxurious vehicles. According to Mr. Hilyer, many couples like to reserve Bay Limousine’s classic 1939 Cadillac sedan, giving the bride and groom a timeless look as they leave their wedding. However, for a more romantic couple, Bay Limousine has two horses and carriages available for reservations. The carriages are six passenger vis-à-vis carriages and are driven by a uniformed coachmen to add a touch of elegance to your special day. The Bay Limousine horses are not just for working; they are large Percherons and reside on Mr. Hilyer’s farm outside of Dothan. A wedding is one of the most exciting days of a couple’s life, and Bay Limousine’s phenomenal service and care will ensure that this day is even more outstanding than you imagined.

“A wedding is one of the most exciting days of a couple’s life, and Bay Limousine’s phenomenal service and care will ensure that this day is even more outstanding than you imagined.

When asked about further expansion, Mr. Hilyer said he is more focused on the quality of his fleet and service than the quantity of reservations he receives. However, Mr. Hilyer said the limousine buses and charter buses are gaining momentum in demand. Bay Limousine’s charter buses are able to accommodate fraternity and sorority formals and other large parties and guarantee a reliable and professional service. “We are in a happy business,” said Mr. Hilyer, and he knows that there’s nothing more rewarding than making an individual’s or a group’s night on the town or event one to remember. Although there is a large demand for limousines at social events, Bay Limousine also accommodates corporate needs. Whether you need a ride to the airport or need a chauffeur for a client dinner, Bay Limousine has several town cars and corporate SUVs to accommodate all of your professional endeavors. As with all of their services, Bay Limousine offers the finest luxury vehicles that will be sure to please and impress your clients.

Bay Limousine is a genuine, customeroriented business. Mr. Hilyer works relentlessly to ensure that every client is satisfied with the service he receives. Reliability is a major part of the Bay Limousine success. Mr. Hilyer ensures his clients that they will maintain a contractual agreement and will not commit any of the faux paus that give many limousine companies a bad name. His drivers are on-time, well-groomed, and friendly and are ready to serve you and the rest of your party. Because Bay Limousine has an in-house mechanic, all of its vehicles are kept in the most pristine condition to help eliminate any errors from occurring on your special day. CULINARY CORNER WHIPPOORWILL

Whippoorwill

VINEYARDS

Vineyards

Notasulga is a quiet town located just 20 minutes northwest of Auburn. On the surface, it seems like a town that is typical to Southern Alabama, with quaint ranch-style houses and rolling green pastures lining the quiet roads. Hidden among the stillness is a 15-acre farm that is anything but typical in the state of Alabama. This farm is known as Whippoorwill Vineyards, and its owners, Mr. Tim Watkins and Mr. Chad Ledbetter, grow over 2,000 vines of muscadines each the year. Mr. Watkins and Mr. Ledbetter have been harvesting muscadines off of this land since 2005, and it’s not just for eating. They use the muscadines to make seven varieties of wine, which they sell in their on-location gift shop every Thursday through Saturday. From the picking of the grapes to the boxing the final product, each bottle of wine is touched by a pair of hands almost 10 times. It is not a fast or an easy process, but Whippoorwill Vineyards is producing some of the best tasting wine in Alabama.

r. Watkins is a tall, kind man who could easily be your next door neighbor. Before he arrived to the interview with Southern Tatler, he had been feeding his chickens when he noticed an unwelcome visitor had taken presence in the coop. He arrived to the interview with an unmistakable copperhead slithering around in the bed of his truck. “Look who I found,” Mr. Watkins grinned. Lucky for Mr. Watkins, he found the snake rather than the other way around. As we drove down the long gravel driveway, we were taken aback by the scenic view of the blooming muscadines on the vines and the sun beginning to set behind the vineyard. Whippoorwill Vineyards is a family business. Mr. Watkins and Mr. Ledbetter are brother-in-laws, but their wives and children play integral roles in making the vineyards a success. Mr. Watkins and Mr. Ledbetter were inspired to open Whippoorwill Vineyards after reading an article from the October 2005 issue of Progressive Farmer. This particular article was about how small farmers were struggling and began to subsidize their income by opening a vineyard. Mr. Bobby Watkins, Tim’s father, and Tim had been making wine since Tim was in high school. Wine making became a competition between the two men, as they fought over the grapes from the best vines and aimed to see whose wine tasted better. After reading the Progressive Farmer article, Mr. Bobby suggested they use their large plot of land in Notasulga to take their wine-making endeavors to the next level. Muscadines are native to the South and are what the Watkins men knew, so they planted their original vines in the winter of 2005. Muscadines are also more resistant to disease than grapes, making them the ideal candidate for the Watkins’ wine. Because Mr. Watkins spent most of his life experimenting with the flavors and colors of wine, it did not take him long to create a standard variety of wines to sell at Whippoorwill. Whippoorwill’s wines, however, are not just recognized by Alabamians. The vineyard has won several awards for their wine, such as the Finger Lakes International Wine Competition, the Wines of the South Regional Wines Competition, and the Grand Harvest Award in Sonoma, California. “Many

people don’t think wine this good can come out of Alabama,” Mr. Watkins laughed about the awards. Whippoorwill’s award-winning wine begins by crushing the muscadines on the crush pad right outside of the fermenting room. To give them their unique color, the reds are fermented outside in the warm Alabama sunshine, but the whites ferment inside in large drums that Mr. Watkins had shipped over from Italy and Germany. The wine then, depending on the variety they are making, spends and extended period of time fermenting in the tanks. The experts at Whippoorwill then rack the wine, rather than pumping it as to not disturb its natural flavors, to another tank for the final fermenting process. When it is time for bottling, the wine moves from the tank through a line that actually runs underneath the store to the other side of the building. Here, the wine is filtered an additional time to ensure there are no fragments of grapes or such in the wine, and then it is pumped into glass bottles. According to Mr. Watkins, the bottling process is most efficient when there are five people present to help. One person handles the filtering, two others manage the bottling, the bottles are then passed to another person for corking, who then passes the bottle to a person responsible for spinning the labels and putting the bottles into boxes. Whippoorwill does not cut any corners when it comes to wine making, taking the time to ensure that each bottle is of

the highest quality. Throughout the Whippoorwill store, you will notice many items for sale that aren’t products of muscadines. A favorite amongst Southerners and health fanatics, local Notasulga honey from the bees that pollenate the muscadines flowers in the vineyard is for sale. Eleven bee boxes sit on the back of the 15 acres and provide Mr. Watkins and Whippoorwill visitors with local honey every summer. As the population of honey bees has recently declined in the South, community members are extremely grateful for this product. Alternately, Mr. Watkins truly understands the power of community and appreciates all that the members of Tallassee, Auburn-Opelika, Prattville, and beyond have done for him and his family. “Ultimately,” Mr. Watkins says, “we just want people to experience good wine and to know that there are vineyards in the South.” Good wine and honey are not all Whipporwill visitors will be able to purchase in the fall of 2015. In preparation for his daughter’s wedding, which will be held at the vineyard, Mr. Watkins and the rest of the crew at Whippoorwill have recently constructed a building that will be used for the wedding reception. However, after his daughter and her fiancé have said their vows, the men at Whippoorwill will use the building for making

sugar cane syrup. A rare delicacy in the South, sugar cane syrup is loved by many and sold by few. Mr. Watkins hopes that by offering such a unique product, he will be able to draw more customers to visit Whippoorwill Vineyards. Whippoorwill Vineyards has seen visitors from England, Italy, Ireland, and Germany. Through their high-quality wines, they are working to prove to the wine community that it is possible to make refined, respectable wine in the South. According to Mr. Watkins, Whippoorwill’s busiest time of year is during the Fall when people travel to the area for Auburn football games and when customers can participate in U-Pick. U-Pick allows visitors to walk in between the rows of vines and pick their own muscadines for cooking, eating, or wine making. It makes the experience of coming to the vineyard that much more personal for customers. Interestingly enough, a television production company spent three days in Notasulga filming the Whippoorwill Vineyards family for a pilot episode of a show called Wine

Country. The show was designed to resemble something like A&E’s Duck Dynasty, but both the Watkins men weren’t so sure that they could do television as a full-time job. “They wanted you to do the craziest stuff—stuff that we don’t really do—and would have you say everything two or three times in a couple different ways,” Mr. Bobby Watkins chuckled. Unfortunately because of Alabama law, Whippoorwill Vineyards is currently unable to distribute their wines to any local restaurants, but their wine is available for purchase in most ABC stores throughout Alabama. However, it is not until you have taken a trip to Notasulga to visit Whippoorwill Vineyards that you can taste the passion and hard work put into their wines. When you shake Mr. Watkins hand and see the warm grin across Mrs. Vickie Watkins’ face, you can then begin to understand why this family does what they do and why they love it so much. No one ever said it was an easy business, but the Watkins family truly makes it seem worth it. for more information onWhippoorwillVineyards visit www.whippoorwillvineyards.com

Wolfe

Every couple dreams of having the perfect plan for their lives, but often times, God has a different idea in mind. This is exactly what happened to Mr. and Mrs. Craig and Maribeth Wolfe. Becoming one of the top custom-home builders in the Southeast wasn’t part of Craig and Maribeth’s plan, but it has turned out to be more than they could have ever asked for. Overwhelmed with success, love, and a beautiful daughter, the Wolfe’s are truly living the American Dream. The husband and wife duo started their company, Landmark Builders, in 2006. Over the course of the previous nine years, they have become even more passionate about their love for each other and their relentless desire to build the area’s most elite homes. It is a special kind of patience and understanding that allows Craig and Maribeth to work so beautifully together, and it’s something that makes their relationship and their business so unique. 83 J U LY / A U G U S T

2015

ack in August of 1995, a smart, beautiful 17-year-old girl moved to Auburn and across the street from Craig. Her name was Maribeth, and she was going to be a freshman at Auburn University. Craig had just transferred to Auburn from a junior college and was also beginning his life on The Plains. It was just the beginning of their life-long journey together, as they have been inseparable ever since. At that time, Craig was majoring in Forestry, but because of the lack of employment opportunities in that field, he changed his major to Landscape Design. Maribeth’s major was also Landscape Design, so they spent their time at Auburn together in the College of Agriculture. Although Craig says he never really enjoyed school, Maribeth was quick to say that he enrolled in calculus and statistic courses as electives. “He’s very mathematically-minded,” Maribeth said. Alternately, Maribeth said she thoroughly enjoyed school. She graduated from a small private school in Louisville, Alabama at 17 years old and finished college in just three years. In love and eager to start their life together, Maribeth and Craig graduated from Auburn in March of 1999. Maribeth had plans to continue on to graduate school, and Craig was going to open a landscaping company. However, on March 23 of that year, the two purchased a business license together and started Auburn Outdoor Services, a full-service landscape company. In October of 1999, they were married and made Auburn their permanent home. Within days of starting Auburn Outdoor Services, the company had three major clients. They advertised their services through mailbox flyers and slowly expanded into a prominent landscape business. In 2012, the Wolfe’s sold their landscaping company, but they are thankful for the experience it gave them and for all of the wonderful clients who become friends. Auburn Outdoor Services allowed them to be around numerous home developments, which gave Craig the inspiration to try building homes himself. Craig Wolfe grew up in Monroeville, Alabama. He was grounded on Christian morals and the power of hard work and honesty. It is this foundation that is the key to his marriage and to the success of his business. “I think one of the most attractive things about Craig was his strong moral code,” Maribeth said fondly of her husband. Craig’s father was a veterinarian and also a graduate of Auburn University. Craig and his father spent their time together doing projects,

like building barns. Like his father, Craig is very meticulous and pays strong attention to detail, making his custom-home-building business very unique. However, he accredits his extremely patient demeanor to his grandmother, a virtue that is very beneficial in any line of work in all aspects of life. Maribeth was born and raised in Clayton, Alabama. She is the daughter of former state employees, but she says that her parents’ contrasting personalities gave her a well-balanced demeanor. Her mother is very outgoing, but her father was even-keeled and observant. Maribeth’s mother had a very colorful and creative personality, and her father was able to visualize the big picture and could see things from many different points of view. Maribeth’s parents instilled in her the belief that she could do anything and that she should never let her gender hold her back. It was this belief and their wellrounded personalities that have placed Maribeth where she is today. Throughout her childhood, she developed a great passion for art: drawing, sketching, and painting. She often painted murals for her high school, but her favorite piece that she ever did is a Santa Claus that she painted in the 11th grade. Unlike the large murals, this painting had intricate details and a substantial amount of depth, qualities that are visible in the homes that she designs. Maribeth and Craig currently live in Auburn

with their soon-to-be 5-year-old daughter, Emmerson. “She’s truly the light of our life,” Maribeth said about her daughter. Because Maribeth had been told she was unable to have children, the couple waited almost 12 years before they were blessed with baby Emmerson. Maribeth and Craig are thankful to be in the home building business because while they are on-site every single day, they are still able to spend quality time with their daughter. It is easy to see that family is the most important thing to the Wolfe’s. “People ask how Craig and I work together, but I don’t know how we couldn’t. His problems are my problems,” Maribeth said. The Wolfe’s marriage is a beautiful balance between love, mutual understanding, patience, and honesty. Not many couples are able to say they work so well together, but Maribeth and Craig make it look easy.

“ The Wolfe’s marriage is a beautiful balance between

love, mutual understanding, patience, and honesty.”

Spending quality time with their daughter is Maribeth and Craig’s number one priority, but they are also passionate about physical fitness. “Craig has lifted weights since he was a teenager, and I picked it up in college. We both exercise six to seven times a week,” Maribeth said. The Wolfe’s love for exercise and healthy living accentuates the detail-oriented lifestyle the couple must live in order for their business to be successful In addition to his already very active lifestyle, Craig is an outdoorsman. He loves to spend time hunting and fishing, a quiet and peaceful means of relaxation. Maribeth and Craig value their privacy, so the Wolfe family resides on 20 acres of private land in the rural part of Lee County, away from neighbors and traffic.

Photographer: Jamie Burnett Photography

Although most of the homes built by Landmark are upwards of 4,000 square-feet, the Wolfe’s say they live in a small house, reinforcing Maribeth’s minimalist ideologies. Before Maribeth and Craig had Emmerson, they spent their weekends and vacations traveling. They have ventured to Mexico, Savannah, and the Biltmore—all iconic locations from an architectural perspective. “We weren’t always so focused on the architecture as we were things like the flow of traffic in a city. Things like that really stood out to us,” Maribeth said. The couple has even been inspired by homes that dot pastures and rural towns in Illinois and Indiana. It is this incredible attention to detail that makes the Landmark homes possible. When they built their first spec home, the biggest problem they encountered was not enough planning, but now with almost 10 years of experience under their belts, they have mastered the art of fulfilling a client’s vision. In 2006, the Wolfe’s took a major risk and built their first home. This house was a ‘spec

home,’ meaning there was no guarantee that someone would buy it. Fortunately for Craig and Maribeth, the house sold in little time at all, and from an ad in the Montgomery Advertiser, Landmark homes received their first request for a custom-built home. However, in 2007, the housing market was dwindling, so they were forced to put the home building aside, and the couple relied on maintenance work from their landscaping company to stay afloat. In 2011, they decided to get back into building custom homes and built another spec home in the Moores Mill Club. Before Maribeth could even get back to the lot with the “For Sale” sign, Craig had sold the home, and their business has taken off ever since. The next year the couple sold their landscaping company. “There’s too much competition in landscaping, and I knew I could build a better product than what was out there,” Craig said about the development of Landmark Builders. When Craig and Maribeth are consulting with a client to build a home, the process starts from the ground up. They begin by interviewing

better. My Mantra is that you must have

the client, assessing their needs and their dreams, and use any images their client brings to get a rough idea of what the home will look like. From there, Maribeth takes the sketches and ideas to an architect and a draftsman to create the house plans. “I’m really the liaison between the clients and the architectural professionals,” Maribeth said. While Maribeth is working with the clients and drafts-people to come up with the perfect plans, Craig is spending an extensive amount of time researching different products and materials. He originally became fascinated with how technology has shaped the construction industry while working for a saw mill company for two years in college. “Most people just go to Home Depot or Lowe’s and see a 2x4 and have no idea how it got there. They don’t realize that, through technological advances, forest products have been optimized to reduce waste. A tree comes into the mill and is evaluated electronically to determine how it can produce the maximum number of usable boards with the least waste,” Craig said. Because of Craig’s strong interest in materials,

clients at Landmark are never limited by the availability of a product. The Wolfe’s try to locally source as much as possible; however, much of the materials they use are ordered online from all over the country, and often, unclaimed products are salvaged from anywhere in the world. Diversity and customization are key components to Landmark homes. “I believe diversity makes a community better. My mantra is that you must have moderation in all things,” Maribeth said. Maribeth and Craig wouldn’t want to be the only builders in a subdivision or community because they believe it is a variety of minds that makes a community unique. In their hometowns of Monroeville and Clayton, no two homes are alike. These are very old and historic Alabama communities, and it is their diversity in architecture that makes them unique. Maribeth’s childhood home is currently 180 years old, and while she says that it is full of character, its uniqueness is nothing compared to the details of the homes she and her husband build. The idea behind Landmark’s homes is for a person

89 J U LY / A U G U S T

2015

who has seen the house once or twice or who may have just driven by it to be able to identify it to someone and for that person to know exactly which home they’re referencing, therefore creating “Landmarks.” For the customization that Maribeth and Craig do to be achievable, their average home takes about eight months to 16 months to build. Landmark Builders’ homes are each as unique as their clients. Because Maribeth and Craig only take on a maximum of four projects a year, they are able to truly focus on their client’s individualized needs. Since 2006, they have built a total of 13 homes, a number that, to many builders, seems minute, but these small quantities allow them to do what they do. Although each home is different, Craig says some things about Landmark Builders are consistent throughout every project: “While every home we craft is as unique as its owner, some things come standard with all Landmark Builders’ projects: superior architectural integrity, professional project management, attentive client service and adherence to strict budgets and timelines.” In 2013, Landmark Builders was selected to build the East Alabama Living Showcase Home. “This home was designed around a kitchen sink,” Craig says with a laugh. The sink was a 1920s cast-iron piece from Scranton, PA that Maribeth had fallen in love with. What seems like an impossible idea to many builders turned out to be one of the area’s most unique and beautiful homes. There is no such thing as impossible to Landmark Builders. Craig and Maribeth laughed as they realized they don’t think they’ve ever had to tell a client they weren’t able to do something or weren’t able to fulfill their dreams. In fact, they say that the only restraining factor is usually financial. “You dream it, we achieve it!” says Maribeth. It is the seamless way Maribeth and Craig collaborate and work together that makes their business possible. Because they have worked together for almost more than 15 years, they understand each other and are able to build a beautiful product for their clients. Finding subcontractors who can work together in this same fashion has been one of Landmark Builder’s biggest obstacles. “We don’t always do things the way many builders so, so breaking the

“Our goal is to be the most professional and ethical builder, only as successful as our clients are happy” subcontractors out of the habit of cutting corners is always a challenge,” Craig said. However, the couple says that they have now found a group of subcontractors that they can rely on and they work well together. Landmark Builders stands apart from other developers in the area because of their unparalleled customer service. It is Craig’s patience and Maribeth’s eye for detail that allows them to guide their clients to building the home of their dreams. “We have a responsibility to give the client the best quality and to be their voice,” Maribeth said proudly. Unlike the landscaping business, Landmark Builders only needs one client with a vision. The home Landmark builds is an extension of the client and is meant to stand out. Because they only operate with a controllable amount of homes at a time, they are able to ensure the highest quality in all that they do. “Our goal is to be the most professional and ethical builder, only as successful as our clients are happy,” Maribeth said. The Wolfe’s attentiveness toward their clients is what makes their business successful, as they truly value each and every one of their opinions. Whether you call it fate or the work of God, it is clear that Craig and Maribeth Wolfe are doing what they were destined to do. Between their flourishing business and their beautiful daughter, they have been blessed in all regards and are very thankful for so. Businesses and families like Landmark Builders and the Wolfe’s are what make living in East Alabama so special and so unique.

LOCAL FEATURE OPELIKA SPORTSPLEX

We try to make everything economical for our citizens because our number one goal is not to make money. It’s to provide a great service to the community around us, especially Opelika residents.

The Opelika Sportsplex and Aquatic Center is not your average community recreation facility. With state-of-theart fitness equipment, an array of group fitness classes, and a pool large enough to host massive swim meets, it is no wonder that cities from all over Alabama are modeling their own community centers after the Opelika Sportsplex. The Opelika Sportsplex and Aquatic Center is a haven for community members to not only exercise but to also reset themselves mentally and expand their social community. Offering affordable programs and memberships for seniors, adults, and families, the Sportsplex is a parks and recreation dream that truly has something for everyone. Laura Leigh Chesser, the City of Opelika’s Public Relations Coordinator for the Parks and Recreation Department, is truly proud of everything the Sportsplex offers and of how successfully it is benefiting the community. Providing a haven for seniors, busy moms, and kids after school and in the summers, the Opelika Sportsplex has something to accommodate everyone’s needs.

2015

nvision Opelika is a local organization made up of community members, business owners, and public officials that aims to re-envision and to positively grow the Opelika community by 2025. In 2001, headed up by executive director Tom Penton, this group came up with the idea for the Opelika Sportsplex. It was a dream of the City of Opelika to benefit the community physically, mentally, and culturally, and with the 76 acres of land donated by Mr. and Mrs. Yetta Samford, the construction for the Opelika Sportsplex broke ground on February 21, 2008 and is the largest facility to be built by the city in its 164-year history. “One of the great things that happened was that [the construction] finished on-time and on-budget, which rarely ever happens when you take on a project this large, so the City of Opelika is really proud of that,” Chesser said about the construction of the project. The Sportsplex was complete and ready for use on August 31, 2009. The Opelika Sportsplex was built on a partnership of both public and private funds, although the City took on most of the financial burden. The East Alabama Medical Center, the Charter Bank Foundation, Mr. Cal James Sr., the W. James Samford Foundation, and others all donated more than $9 million to the Sportsplex and consequently have areas in the center named in their honor. It is clear that the community and the city were truly passionate about the development of this project and wanted to see to the betterment of the Opelika citizens. “Opelika prides itself on being the best at whatever it does,” Chesser said. “Our Power Services are one of the few places in America that has the capability to offer a fiber optic cable. I feel like one of the goals, especially for the city, was to have another thing Opelika could really be proud of and that is what the Sportsplex has done.”

Catching the eye of cities from Fairhope to Huntsville, the Opelika Sportsplex serves as a model for other recreation centers across the state. In 2010, a year after the facility was built, the City of Opelika won the Facility of the Year Award from the Alabama Parks and Recreation Association. “A lot of time and material goes into that application. We were very honored to receive that award when there are many other cities that are very well deserving. It makes us feel good to be one of the departments other cities look to and say, ‘Hey, they’re doing it right,’” Chesser said about the award. Because the Opelika Sportsplex is decked out with top of the line workout equipment and has amenities to meet everyone’s needs and desires, it is no wonder that this facility is serving as a model for other recreation centers around the state.

“When the Parks and Recreation Department was designing the Opelika Sportsplex, they did not forget to acoomodate a single generation.

At the Opelika Sportsplex and Aquatic Center, there truly is something for everyone. One of the center’s biggest successes among members has been the group fitness classes. The Sportsplex offers an array of classes, such as cycling, barre, Zumba, and body pump. “It was funny because when we first designed the Sportsplex, no one was really into cycling, but when it came time to open, cycling had become a huge deal. We ended up turning what was going to be a storage closet into our cycling room,” Chesser laughed about the obstacles the city encountered when designing the center. Cycling, in return, has become a huge success at the Sportsplex, and in order to ensure you have a bike when you attend a class, you must first stop by the front desk to pick up a number for your bike. Like cycling, all group fitness classes operate on a first-come-first-serve basis at the Sportsplex. Alongside the group fitness classes, the Opelika Sportsplex is decked out with a state-of-the-art weight room, named after Mr. Cal James Sr. All of the equipment in the weight room is Life Fitness, which Chesser says is the “Mercedes of workout

equipment.” Adjacent to the weight room are two racquetball courts that stay busy year round and especially on the weekends. Because they are so popular, Chesser recommends that members call ahead to ensure a court will be available at their desired time. In the Aquatic Center of the Opelika Sportsplex, the pool and the splash park are set to the same high standard of quality as the rest of the facility. The indoor pool at the Center is of Olympic magnitude and has a zero-depth entry, a hot tub, and an area for lap swimming. “We have a huge pool with a zero-depth entry, which is really convenient for people with hip problems, knee problems, and back problems. They’re just able to wade into the pool like at the beach,” Chesser said proudly about the pool’s accessibility. The pool and hot tub are also made accessible to those members who are wheelchair bound through a wheelchair made of PVC pipe. This rust-resistant wheelchair is designed to allow members who wouldn’t else be able to exercise in the pool to be able to reap the benefits of working out in the water.

On the other side of the pool, the large open swimming area can be divided into lanes. This design allows the Opelika Sportsplex to host local and regional swim meets, which is brings money to the city in alternative ways. “The pool is has lane swimming at the end, so we’re able to host big swim meets. This brings other people into the state who are buying gas, buying food, and staying at local hotels, so it’s a money-generator for the city,” Chesser said. In the past, the Sportsplex has hosted the ARPA State Swim Meet, state and district soccer meets, district basketball tournaments, disc golf tournaments, and the Special Olympics Swim Meet. Each of these events has brought local hotels, restaurants, and gas stations outside revenue they wouldn’t otherwise have. In a fenced-in area outside of the pool is the Splash Park: an aquatic paradise for children and their moms. The Splash Park

is unique because it is unlike a regular pool, as it does not have a standing body of water. Instead, it is complete with overturning buckets, water guns, and over-sized mushrooms that are spilling over with water. “The Splash Park is safer for kids than a standard pool because it largely eliminates the chances of drowning. However, we have a life guard on duty at all times for precautionary measures,” Chesser said. This kid-friendly design is also great for moms because it allows them to lay by the Park in a worry-free environment. On the second floor of the Opelika Sportsplex and Aquatic Center is the East Alabama Medical Center’s Cardio Area. This area is complete with stair climbers, ellipticals, treadmills, and standing bicycles. Just like in the weight room, all of the equipment is state of the art. There is even a machine for those members who are wheelchair bound but still want to reap the

benefits of a good cardiovascular workout. Also apart of the Cardio Area is a 1/12 of a mile rubber track that stretches around the top floor of the Sportsplex. The rubber footing is designed to be forgiving on the knees and shins of those who are sensitive to injury, and because it is indoors, it is the perfect area for those who aren’t fond of running on the treadmill. When the Parks and Recreation Department was designing the Opelika Sportsplex, they did not forget to accommodate a single generation. The Charter Foundation Adult Activity Center is a 5,000 square-foot facility on the main floor of the Sportsplex that is a haven for senior citizen members. The Center hosts group fitness classes catered to seniors, social events for senior members, and even a “Master Games, which is an Olympics for the seniors. To qualify as a senior member at the Sportsplex, you must be 62-yearsold or older. According to Chesser, one of the great things about the Adult Activities

Center is that it provides a healthy social environment for seniors who may have lost their significant other or live far away from their families. The seniors go on many trips throughout the year and have recently traveled to Tennessee and Arizona. The Center is complete with pool tables and a computer lab, where seniors can come take classes to learn how to do everything from creating a Facebook to cropping a photo. Also adjacent to the Adult Activities Center are three meeting rooms, or one giant room, that are accompanied with screens and projectors. These rooms are available for rent to the public and can be used to host business meetings, bridal showers, birthday parties, and even family reunions. A kitchen adjacent to the rooms is also available for rent, or for free if you decide to rent the entire space, and is complete with a working stove, oven, and ice machine, making it accessible to host any kind of event.

Aside from the activities available inside the Sportsplex, there is an 18-hole disc golf course in the back of the center that is popular among members and nonmembers alike. Disc golf is a sport similar to the standard club-and-tee golf, but instead of hitting a ball, players attempt to throw high-dollar Frisbees into baskets around the course. According to Chesser, the Tumble Tree Disc Golf Course is one of the most popular amenities the Sportsplex offers, as it is free for any member of the public to come and play. The course requires players to be quite agile with their Frisbees because the course crosses over several bodies of water, winds through a large series of trees, and rises and dips over hills on the back side of the Sportsplex’s property. Chesser also said that if a player happens to lose their Frisbee in a pond, a local community member comes and skims them out of the water, and Frisbees with telephone numbers on them will be returned to their owners.

‘Accommodating’ was a central descriptor when the Parks and Recreation Department was designing the practical purposes of the Sportsplex. To meet the needs of many families in the area, the Sportsplex offers a “Tot Watch” service for moms and dads who want to work out but need someone to take care of their children. The service is available in the morning from 8 until noon and in the evenings from 4 until 8 and welcomes children who are ages 6 weeks through 6-years-old. Child safety is a key component to the Tot Watch service, and the Sportsplex requires that parents sign their child in and out of the Tot Watch room. The service is $3 per child, per visit, or $5 for two or more children, or families can pay a monthly fee of $20 for one child or $30 for two or more children. The maximum amount of time a child can stay in the Tot Watch Area is two hours. The city of Opelika has achieved many of their initial goals since opening the Sportsplex. They have gained many returns

on their investment that go beyond a financial aspect. According to Chesser, the faculty and staff at the Sportsplex has given a new meaning of life to several Opelika residents who were told they would never walk again. After receiving special care at the Opelika Sportsplex, they are able to walk through the doors and to do more than they could have every imagined. Additionally, the Sportsplex has allowed the city to host a variety of events on a much larger scale. Since the Sportsplex has opened, the Parks and Recreation Department has added on five soccer fields to the facility, which are complete with two concession stands, a scoreboard, and a press box.

Along with accommodating everyone’s needs into the Opelika Sportsplex, the city did not neglect to incorporate affordability into the equation as well. Memberships are available for Opelika residents and nonresidents, but they are discounted for those families, individuals, and seniors who live in Opelika. Members can pay a monthly or yearly fee and are able to pay with cash, check, or bank withdrawal. All that is needed to sign up for membership is a valid driver’s license. “We try to make everything economical for our citizens because our number one goal is not to make money. It’s to provide a great service to the community around us, especially Opelika residents,”

Chesser said. The City of Opelika has succeeded in giving the community a safe and clean environment to exercise and grow in, and it is clear that they are proud of their accomplishments. The Opelika Sportsplex and Aquatic Center has benefitted the city exponentially from an economic, social, and physical standpoint. The Sportsplex provides community members with a sate of the art facility to run, swim, play disc golf, and lift weights. “We wanted to make our community healthier, not just physically, but mentally and socially as well,” Chesser said. The city’s goal was to benefit the health of the community rather than to

make money off of the project, but the Sportsplex has been such a success that they could have never imagined the magnitude of the positive impact the facility would have on Opelika’s citizens. The third-year goal of the Opelika Sportsplex was to have 3,000 members. They currently have 6,700 members and expect that number to grow to 7,500 if the city continues to expand at its current rate. for more information on The Opelika Sportsplex visit 1001 Andrews Road, Opelika or visit www.opelikasportsplex.com

FASHION STUDIO

3:19

“Repent, then, and turn to God, so that your sins may be wiped out, that times of refreshing may come from the Lord,” Acts 3:19.” It is this verse that is the foundation behind Ms. Molly Anderson’s boutique, Studio 3:19. Studio 3:19 is a haven for men and women to come to find topof-the-line clothing in an area when this is not always readily available. Whether you’re searching for an outfit for a wedding, graduation, or concert, Ms. Anderson and her accommodating staff are ready to help you look and feel your best. Studio 3:19 is unique because Ms. Anderson has an extensive knowledge of fabrics and the latest trends and sells men’s and women’s clothing that she is proud of.

Ms. Anderson originally opened Studio 3:19 Camden, Alabama in 2011, shortly after she graduated from Auburn University with a Bachelor’s degree in entrepreneurship. Since the age of seven, Ms. Anderson knew she wanted to become an entrepreneur. In pursuit of her dream, she began making and selling belts and jewelry to family members when she was 11. After she graduated from Auburn, she wanted to expand her knowledge of the fashion industry, so she traveled to North Carolina to work for Ralph Lauren’s distribution office. It was a longing to be back in Alabama and to be closer to her family that led her to opening her first store in Camden. The store was originally a gift shop and was located at street number 319. The Bible verse for the day she and her business partner at the time purchased the store was Acts 3:19, and from these unlikely coincidences, Ms. Anderson knew that God was opening more doors for her than she could have ever imagined.

Now with two locations in Monroeville and downtown Opelika, Ms. Anderson’s boutique has created such a following that she is constantly shipping to places all over the globe. From the Netherlands to Australia, people everywhere are dying to own pieces from Studio 3:19. She says that it was when a dress from her boutique made the “Popular” page on Pinterest that her business grew to become an international phenomenon. In both of her stores and online, shoppers will find brands like Lilly Pulitzer, Southern Marsh, OTBT, Patagonia, and Jack Rogers. Ms. Anderson aims to clothe both men and women in styles you can’t get anywhere else. To make sure her customers are wearing pieces that are pretty much exclusive to rural Alabama and unique, she buys her clothes from the market in New York, rather than in Atlanta like many other local boutiques. “The pieces I sell in my store are things I would actually wear in different stages of my life. They’re my favorite things,” Ms. Anderson said about her wide variety of clothes. Ms. Anderson is truly passionate about everything her boutique sells and is proud of their selection. She also mentioned she plans to keep expanding her repertoire of brands, in particular the kinds of shoes she carries. She is also working with her brothers and her best friend, Abby, to design a men’s clothing line. Ms. Anderson’s overall goal for Studio 3:19 is to give customers an extraordinary shopping experience and to form a personal relationship with every person who enters her store. Her hope is that she can give a mom who hasn’t felt like herself in a while the confidence she needs to feel beautiful again. The Opelika community has been so welcoming and supportive of Studio 3:19 that Ms. Anderson plans to expand her store by August 2015. She wants to provide customers with a more intimate and unique shopping experience. Studio 3:19 truly has something for everyone, and shopping here is made easy with their two convenient locations and large online store. for more information on Studio 3:19 visit www.studio319opelika.com

Known as the “crown jewel” of the Russell Lands community, Willow Point is a golf course on the lake that was originally constructed in 1960. The golf course was recently remodeled by Hurdzan-Fry to become one of the finest golf courses in the South, but it is the surrounding TAT L E R

neighborhood that makes this location so special. Properties in this neighborhood are complete with gated security, level lots, and beautiful forests. Russell Lands designed this neighborhood to be a place of supreme and luxurious relaxation, and in doing so, they have permitted only the most exquisite architectural designs to erect themselves. The par score on the course is 72, making it an ideal location for residents who love to spend their mornings and afternoons walking along the freshly cut Bermuda grass. Russell Lands has elevated the definition of ‘life on the lake’ through their development of the resort life of Willow Point. In addition to Willow Point (the neighborhood), Willow Point Golf & Country Club is a short golf cart ride from two other Russell Lands neighborhoods, Glynmere and Willow Glynn. These neighborhoods combine the comforts of living in an all-inclusive getaway with the traditional atmosphere of being on the lake, and it is the perfect place for families, retirees, or others who appreciate the finer things in life. Across the lake but still apart of the Russell Lands community is an area known as The

Ridge. The Ridge is home to several different neighborhoods: South Ridge Harbor, Russell Cabins, Ridge Run, and Ridge Estates South to name a few. These neighborhoods offer spectacular views of the sunrise, sunset, and of the natural beauty that encompasses the lake. In addition, residents of The Ridge are granted unlimited access to a 10-acre recreation complex, a residents-only clubhouse, and a world-class marina. Living at The Ridge gives residents the opportunity to easily access local restaurants like SpringHouse, Kowaliga Restaurant, and Catherine’s Market as well as the shopping that is available in the East Alabama area. Owning a home at The Ridge is a blessing and a privilege, as it elevates the livingon-the-lake experience to a new standard. Russell Lands’ most recent neighborhood on Lake Martin is South Ridge Harbor, where luxury meets nature and relaxation. This neighborhood is located on the southernmost tip of The Ridge and gives residents easy access to The Ridge Club and other amenities. With local restaurants and shopping just down the road, the South Ridge Harbor is certainly the place to be for those who love seclusion without

feeling like they’re out of touch with reality. This unique set of lots was once home to the Dixie Sailing Club, an organization that has resided on Lake Martin for more than 50 years and now relocated just a few miles north of the lake. South Ridge Harbor is ideal for those who grew up loving the lake and are looking to claim an idyllic vacation spot or to relocate permanently. Additionally, located at The Ridge but with a more classic, lake-type feel are the Russell Cabins. These modern, but rustic, cabins remind residents of a traditional lake cabin but with a 21st-century flare, welding the best of both worlds. These cabins are available on waterfront lots and are the perfect home for those who love rustic architecture with clean lines. Designed by Bill Ingram, Jonathan Torode, Alex Krumdieck, Taylor Dawson, and Bill Farshee, they combine the rustic scenery of the woods with an eye for modern architecture. If your family loves to spend time with their neighbors, watching the kids play in the front yard, then Russell Lands’ Glynmere at Willow Point is the perfect spot with your family. is to represent that of traditional suburbia, the only difference being your backyard is the glass-like water of Lake Martin. At Glynmere, residents are able to enjoy amenities like a cabana with a pool and playground, maintenance-free landscaping, and a slip for all of their boating adventures. Glynmere is an idyllic neighborhood for families to spend their summers at the lake. It combines the benefits and tranquility of being on the lake with the comforts and family-oriented lifestyle that one finds with living in a traditional neighborhood. Owning a house at Glynmere is sure to create childhood memories your children won’t soon forget. Located within the Alexander City limits is Russell Lands’ River Oaks neighborhood. Lots in this neighborhood are located near the main lake channel, or the Tallapoosa River, and swing around to the more eastern location of Dennis Creek Cove. If you love water sports and fishing, this is an ideal location for you and your family. Spend your days wake surfing, water skiing, and tubing, and in the evenings, appreciate the sounds of nature as you cast your line into the calm waters of Lake Martin. River Oaks

is also located conveniently close to schools, medical facilities, golf, and shopping, making it another perfect location for permanently relocating to the lake. Lake Martin is more than a standard lake. In fact, it is the only lake to achieve “Treasured Lake” status. Russell Lands allows it to be a home, where the memories you create with your children, grandchildren, and friends are the big things and the world outside its natural haven is irrelevant. Whether you love to fish, waterski, sail, or just enjoy sitting on a lake dock, those who have experienced life on the lake know that there is truly nothing like it. Russell Lands On Lake Martin merges a classic American pastime with the luxuries of a standard neighborhood home, allowing residents to experience the privilege of living on the lake. Residents of Russell Lands are able to appreciate the bounds of nature surrounding Lake Martin and can combine that with their undying love for being on the water. Lake Martin truly offers something for everyone, and with Russell Lands On Lake Martin neighborhoods, there is no excuse not to own the lakefront property of your dreams. for more information on Russell Lands On Lake Martin visit www.russelllandsonlakemartin.com

TALISMAN CROWN The Talisman Crown was created by De Beers Diamond Jewelers in celebration of Queen Elizabeth II’s 60th Diamond Jubilee in 2011. With 974 diamonds completing the piece, it is nothing short of fit for the Queen. Because this crown has polished and rough diamonds, it is especially unique and took over 100 hours to make. For centuries, rough diamonds were considered tokens of good fortune and prosperity. The crown also has 26-carat and 28-carat diamonds on the lower crown, creating an intense contrast against the lush, royal blue. However, the crown’s centerpiece is the 73-carat diamond directly in the center of the top piece. The Talisman Crown is a royal jewel, and therefore, it cannot be tagged with a price-value.
