YOUR DAY YOUR WAY

Weddings are the most exciting time in someone’s life, no matter what stage of the process they are in. This time of year brings about the most exciting season of life: weddings. If you’re not getting married, you know someone who is. At any step in the process of wedding planning, you might just want to throw your hands up and run straight towards city hall. We here at SVM hope that this issue will help assuage some of that anxiety; this issue is full of inspiration and Pinterest-worthy ideas. If you’re stuck on deciding flowers or food, check out our editorials with some of Columbus’ finest vendors. The team at Bloomwoods Flowers tells us about some of their most interesting bouquet requests. Two words: Star Wars. Be sure to check out the section on champagne—it will leave you wanting to pop open a bottle yourself. Or, check the fashion section for inspiration on the dress of your dreams. You’ll even find exciting ideas for your bridal party as well. If you’ve got all that figured out, head to our travel section where we whisk you away to exotic Vietnam. The beautiful country is the perfect destination wedding—or honeymoon—location. You’ll want to explore all the adventure this beautiful country has to offer. It’s just now coming into its own as a tourist destination, so there has never been a better time to visit. With our comprehensive wedding guide in the pages of this issue, we hope you find that it is

pretty easy to transform your big day into something magical with just a little help. You can even get ideas from some of the SVM brides in this issue! If nothing else, this issue is a love letter to the spectacle of weddings themselves. They’re stressful; they’re messy; they’re memorable. But, most of all, they’re important because two people have just committed to loving and supporting each other for the rest of their lives. For our non-brides, don’t put the magazine down just yet! We’ve also got some great content this issue just for you. As always, we continue to delve into the burgeoning art scene here in Columbus. We have an exclusive interview with world-renowned artist Todd Heindel. The son of a famous illustrator, Todd grew up in and around the arts scene. In his interview, he talks about moving out of his father’s shadow and staking his own claim in the art world. We also turn to Springer darling Mary Jane Mitchell, who just took a turn on the stage for the Springer Opera House’s production of Grease. She spoke about her mother’s battle with cancer—who is currently doing really well—and how that changed the path of her life and career. With this special issue, we extend special thanks to each of our loyal advertisers who bring our brides the best services and advice in Columbus. Thank you for all of your hard work and dedication. So today we

ALWAYS SATURDAY It’s Always Saturday at this home located on the beautiful Carillon Beach. O

wned by high school sweethearts, Claude and Molly Scarbrough, Always Saturday sits on the LOCAL BEST pristine waters of Florida’s Gulf of Mexico. Carillon Beach is the small town that sits on the 30A corridor. The quaint downtown has just a few shops and stores--including a salon and day spa. The city is in a unique position, offering visitors a peaceful getaway from the hustle and bustle of the Gulf’s more popular cities. While it may be a sleepy town on 30A, it’s close enough for visitors to popover to Panama City Beach or Destin for an afternoon of shopping. The Always Saturday house is situated within a gated community, which offers multiple amenities, including the largest coastal dune lake in Florida. The house is perfect for the family with multiple kids to entertain--the neighborhood is safe and fun and the beach is a stone’s throw from the house. Join SVM as we talk to Claude Scarbrough to discover the beauty of their rental home, Always Saturday.

SVMINTERVIEW

Why did you decide to build a home in Carillon Beach versus other popular destinations along the 30A corridor, like Seaside, Destin and Panama City? After some years of owning a townhome at the west end of Panama City Beach, we began to see development on the large tract of land next door to us. I remember walking to the trailer parked on-site and introducing myself to the developer’s son. He shared the vision of what was to become Carillon Beach. Molly and I loved the community concept, amenities, and that it was to be gated. We were already in love with the quieter west end. What is your favorite part of the Always Saturday property? We can’t just say one thing, but the pool that is heated and overlooks the lake is one of our favorites. We also love the tower because it is in essence an open room. The breeze off the ocean is wonderful; there are great views of the lake to the north and the ocean to the south; and, it is quiet and peaceful. We also provide paddleboards so that is fun with the house being right on the lake and across from the Gulf. After 22 years of visiting and seasonal living at Carillon, what prompted you two to start renting property? We have had several rental properties in the area over the years and had owned this lot for some time. The lot itself was picked early in the development of Carillon as it is two doors down from the east end pool and directly across from the dune walkover to the beach. It was a premium lot due to its location. When our family began to grow, we wanted space for overflow and felt it was time to build on this lot. To justify the cost of this house, we felt it best to offset expenses by renting to guests who appreciate this type of home.

Our beaches are not crowded, especially compared to the other beaches along 30A.

CARILLON BEACH IS A FAMILY BEACH.

We love to shop, dine, and do all those things along 30A.

What can visitors expect on a visit to Carillon Beach? Our community is gated and has great amenities with three neighborhood pools, tennis courts, a playground, and sidewalks. Our downtown area is small, but has a weekly concert, Sunday church service, general store, a couple of small restaurants, etc. Our beaches are not crowded, especially compared to the other beaches along 30A. Carillon Beach is a family beach. We love to shop, dine, and do all those things along 30A with all the crowds, but then come home to the quiet, peaceful neighborhood of Carillon. How would you describe the interior of Always Saturday? Bright, colorful, fresh, modern. We have Wi-Fi throughout, including the pool and cabana area. The kitchen is thoroughly equipped; the wet bar has a drink refrigerator and icemaker. We have Apple TV in the main living area. There is also a morning bar on the second floor with a small fridge, coffee maker and sink. The house was professionally designed by Luanne Kelly of Luanne Kelly Interiors of Santa Rosa Beach, FL. With summer fast approaching, when is the best time to make a reservation at Always Saturday to ensure people get the dates they want? As soon as possible! Please visit our website for photos, available dates as the calendar on there is current with rates and other information. What’s your favorite thing to do, besides laying out in the sun or playing in the water, while you’re staying in Carillon? We enjoy fishing, ocean kayaking and paddle boarding. We are also right on Lake Powell, which is the largest coastal dune lake in Florida. It is a fun place to boat, ski, fish and sail. Carillon Beach is equidistant between Panama City and Destin. That makes it a great location for shopping, boating, dining, and recreation.SVM

COST Choose the size that fits your budget, use more loose greenery, use more hydrangea as your base. Flowers that add more cost are mini calla lily, garden roses, and succulents.

Kim Nelson

BLOOMWOODS Flowers &Gifts Flowers can sometimes be the most stressful part of planning a wedding. Deciding the right bouquet for your budget and season seems to be almost impossible. SVM sat down with Kim Nelson, owner of Bloomwoods Flowers, to discuss how she helps brides pick the best flowers for their big day.

W

By ANNA LOGAN

hat’s the craziest flower arrangement order you’ve ever received? The craziest or most unusual request for a wedding recently was for a Star Wars-themed wedding. The bride wanted her bouquet to be something out of this world. I was more than happy to create this one-of-a-kind bouquet for her using vibrant orchids, air plants and bromeliads. Designing outside the box is a true outlet for any artist and the more unusual the request, the better. I love a challenge. With wedding season approaching, what do you do to prepare for the influx of orders? The best thing I have done to prepare for the influx of wedding orders this year is moving to a larger space on Rollins Way. The larger space allows us to be better organized, accommodate larger weddings, offer a larger selection of container options and hire more staff. We are ready and excited for all the amazing weddings to come and to congratulate all the Bloomwoods Brides.

. Photos By S.SAXON and flower crowns as well. Why should a bride spend money on professional floral arrangements rather than DIY-ing them herself? The decision to use a professional is and always will be a personal choice. The trend to use simple blooms of all one type, such as baby’s breath and hydrangea, have made it easier and very affordable to do your own flowers. If a bride chooses to use our services, then she can still have all the input she wants and be completely involved in planning her flowers. We have our bride’s preview the actual flowers the day before the wedding, allowing her the final say in how her flowers look. I believe quality flowers are affordable if you are upfront about your budget and hire professionals that cares about helping a bride to manage her flower budget to serve her in the best way. What’s your favorite flower to use in bridal bouquets? Hands down hydrangea are my favorite flower to use in weddings or everyday flowers. Hydrangea are classic, but mostly they are big blooms that give a lush full look and make wedding flowers more affordable because of their size. Mix hydrangea with garden roses and peonies and you have some of the romantic flowers you can combine.

How far out should a bride order her flowers? I like to encourage brides to book with us six months to one year prior to the wedding day because some dates will book quicker and you want to be able secure your favorite vendors. Planning ahead is the best way to be prepared, and we want to help brides manage stress by taking as much as we can off their to-do list. What flower or floral arrangement is going to be the “hot pick” for this wedding season? Pantone called it the color for the year: “Greenery.” The color, which is a beautiful green, will be used, as well as lots of lush trailing greenery and foliage. The trend with using a lot of greenery started two years ago and is still going strong. We will continue to see a lot of the blush blooms SVM

How does a bride know if she is paying too much for her flowers? The best way to know if you are paying too much is to compare your estimate to at least one other florist. This doesn’t have to be a full estimate, either. You can have them price a couple of the arrangements. Be honest and upfront that you want to compare prices. No one should have an issue with this and will appreciate knowing. I personally appreciate businesses that share pricing online and are transparent about what their services cost and this is why we have pricing available on our website. svm

early two years have passed since the historic Bulloch House burned to the ground. The home belonged to one of Warm Springs’ founders and was steeped with history. Over the years it has become a local favorite spot for some good homestyle cooking. try and rebuild. All the old trees are gone and we can’t replace a historical landmark; people would be very disappointed. Is there a certain dish that you believe encapsulates the essence of Southern Cooking at its best? Fried green tomatoes and fried chicken. Especially the Pulley Bone, it’s hard to find because they don’t cut the chicken like in the old days. What is your favorite thing to eat at the Bulloch House? Meat loaf and mashed potatoes, real homemade just like my mama cooked.

What inspired you and your husband to carry on the Bulloch House legacy? We realized how important it was to the livelihood of employees, the city of Warm Springs and the overwhelming response from people around the region. It’s been almost two years since the dreadful lighting fire that totally destroyed the old historical house that belonged to one of the founders of Bullochville, now Warm Springs. What has changed and are you planning to rebuild? We have relocated down to Broad Street and are in two beautiful, old buildings loaded with character and charm, but with same food and same employees. We have decided it would not make sense to

Tell us about your new gift shop and bakery cafe. We are so excited to have a much larger space. Fireflies is a charming and customer-friendly gift shop with a variety of gift items. Customers really enjoy shopping and then going in Lightnin’ Bugs cafe for lunch or dessert and coffee. How did you come up with the names Fireflies & Lightnin’ Bugs? As I was watching the seemingly thousands of tiny red embers floating through the big oak trees, it reminded me of fireflies lighting up the night and since lightening started the original fire, I decided it was only fitting to give these names to the new businesses. Truly bring new life from a tragedy. svm

e recently sat down with Patti, owner and creative director of P. Hasting Design, to dish about this upcoming wedding season. Insisting on the best in every aspect of a wedding, Patti knows exactly what to do for each and every couple that comes to her. See what she had to say below and be sure to visit her website, www. phastingdesign.com, to learn more about her work.

How did you first become involved with wedding planning and designing? As one of the wedding directors at St. Luke United Methodist Church, I realized that I had truly found my niche. I enrolled at New York Institute of Art and Design, received certification in Wedding and Event Planning, and opened P. Hasting Design, LLC in 2014. It has been non-stop since then, and I am honored to have won a Wedding Wire 2017 Couples’ Choice Award. I am fortunate to be able to work with the most adorable brides, grooms and their families, along with so many fabulous vendors in the wedding industry! One of our Columbus weddings was featured in The Knot, Georgia magazine! What’s the best piece of advice you can give to a stressed out bride? As cliche as it sounds, planning a wedding is supposed to be a positive and fun experience. Too often, the details of it all can be quite overwhelming, so my best advice is to hire a wedding planner! A good planner will take care of those details and create a schedule for not only the planning process, but for the entire wedding weekend. The goal for the bride, groom, their families and friends is to actually enjoy being at the wedding! When does it become too late for a couple to hire on a wedding planner? I truly

SVM

believe that it is never too late, but once you start to feel overwhelmed, the sooner the better. The ideal time is once you are engaged and have set a date! Your planner can offer assistance in securing all of your vendors and planning the overall feel of your wedding. So much of what I do involves organizing the vision, calming the nerves of those involved, and whittling away at those details as we see the vision come to life. What’s the most difficult part of taking a couple’s vision from an idea to an actual event? This is one of my favorite things about being a planner. It is all about balance! Balancing the budget, design ideas, and event elements are all so important. Pinterest, even though it is a wonderful tool, can often lead you to think that you have to have it all in order to be a happy bride. I love helping brides and grooms sift through thoughts and ideas to create memorable events that truly represent themselves as a couple. I love it when I hear guests say, “Oh, this is SO them!” A wedding, above all, needs to be personal, and to help find ways to make it just that brings me great joy! How can a bride plan the decadent wedding of her dreams and still be realistic about her budgetary constraints? The average cost for a wedding in the state of Georgia is $28,000.00. It is important to begin the wedding process with a realistic understanding about your budget and how to allocate certain percentages of that budget to the various elements of the plan. Having an understanding of the budget gives you that starting point and creates structure so that you don’t end up making costly mistakes. Planning a wedding on a tighter budget is a challenge that I tend to enjoy. As fun as trends can be, I always advise brides to make sure that ten years from now, they will not be saying, “Why did I do that?” SVM

SVMWEDDING THE ART OF LIBATION

Champagne 101 C

hampagne has launched thousands of ships, toasted billions of weddings and special occasions, flutes attended countless parties, and shared untold special moments between two people. Champagne is the drink of celebration. From types of champagne to know, to classic champagne cocktails to make, here’s the SVM guide to the festive fizz.

By ALESSIO CALIGARIS David Lynch Soviewsmag.com

C

SVMFEATURE

hampagne is synonymous with celebration in Western culture. It is the drink of choice for celebrating anniversaries, the christening of ships, baptisms, sporting events, and the New Year. The outpouring of joy celebrated in these occasions is reflected it in the overflow of bubbles from the neck of a champagne bottle. No other celebration is more worthy of a toast of champagne than the joining of two lives in matrimony. Weddings and champagne have a centuries-long history that it is almost impossible to imagine one without the other. In medieval France, the wedding couple would drink from a two-handed cup called a “Coupe de Mariage”. Traditionally, a small piece of toast was placed in the cup to reduce the acridity of the wine, which is where the term to “raise a toast” comes from. Champagne gained its image of wealth as it was used as a status symbol in the royal courts of Europe. After the French Revolution, champagne was a secular way to celebrate formerly religious ceremonies. Now, champagne isn’t reserved for royalty or for those who have the wealth of royalty, but for those who want to celebrate like royalty and feel the benefits of wealth if only for one night. True champagne can only come from the Champagne region of France, and the wine and champagne industry is highly regulated to maintain its high quality. Knowing this, it would be easy to think that all champagne is essentially the same. However, there are distinct style and flavor variations in Champagne that can complement any special occasion. These are three Classic Champagnes that Georgia Crown Distributing Co. recommends for anyone’s first toast as bride and groom.

ol Roger begain his own champaigne house in 1849 in the town of Épernay, in France. Four generations of the Pol-Roger family have continuously owned and operated the business and it is now one of the most renowned brands of champagne in the world. This notoriety is due in no small part by Sir Winston Churchill’s professed adoration of the brand. The Pol-Roger family and the Churchill family had a personal relationship until the statesmen’s death in 1965. Pol Roger Brut Réserve is a blend in equal parts of the three grape varieties: pinot noir, pinot meunier and chardonnay. Twenty-five percent reserve wines are used to produce this cuvée. The structure and vinosity, elegance and freshness, captured in this Brut Réserve offer an optimum balance between power and finesse, making it a remarkable wine to be served as an apéritif, or to accompany a whole meal.

POL ROGER BRUT RÉSERVE

T

he Bollinger story begins with Athanase de Villermont, the youngest son of French Nobility. He inherited an extensive estate from his family in the Aÿ area of France and continued the craft of champagne production for which this part of the world is so renown. In 1854, the Bollinger family inherited this prestigious Champagne house, which is still owned and operated by their family. Bollinger Champagnes have garnered a reputation for staying “true to tradition” and for producing consistently remarkable champagne. The Bollinger Special Cuvée is perfect shared among friends for a simple and meaningful moment. It is the champagne we give to the people we love and who love nice things. Special Cuvée is the result of the delicate blending between harvest grapes and a majority of reserve wines, part of which have been aged in magnums for 5 to 15 years. This unique blend and aging process is what makes the Special Cuvée unrivaled in quality and tase. It is best paired with any fish, especially sushi and sashimi, seafood, poultry, and white meat. T

his Champagne house was founded as Pommery & Greno in 1858 by Alexandre Louis Pommery and Narcisse Greno. Louise Pommery, Alexandre’s widow, took over direction of the firm and shifted its focus away from wool production to champagne. Under her direction, Pommery began producing dryer champagne rather than the overly sweet champagne that was popularly produced. The sweetness often masked any defects or acridity of inferior champagnes. The result was the Pommery Brut Royal and it quickly became drink of choice in English and Russian royal ballrooms. This fine champagne is a blend of 40 carefully selected crus from the Champagne region. svm

SVMWEDDING CULINARY SERVICES

Catering 101 F

or centuries, the wedding ceremony was but a small part of a wedding celebration. It usually consisted of a small ritual that affirmed each other’s commitment to life and love. The food and drink were the true signs of a great celebration. Even for the most humble wedding celebrations, no cost or effort was spared in order to have the best food and drink available to the excited wedding guests. Careful consideration for providing delicious and thoughtful food has taken second stage to wedding dresses, photographers, and destination locations in today’s wedding culture. With the right choice of catering providers the food can once again take back it’s prominence in a wedding celebration.

SVMWEDDING

o one wants to dine on bland chicken and steamed vegetables, but not all brides have the budget to splurge on a juicy steak or decadent seafood dinner. It doesn’t have to be all or nothing; when you find the right caterer with a creative palette, your wedding day meal can be just as memorable as that special dress.

Cocktail Paring To some, wine and spirits are the “better half” of the food and drink pairing. It may be tempting to have an open bar and call it a day. Just as much thought and consideration should be put into the proper pairing of cocktails with the food you serve.

Buffet vs. Plated Meals

Bulleit Bourbon / Southern Spirits

If your wedding is draped in southern traditions, include this Bulleit Bourbon signature drink. The Kentucky Mule is a traditional take on this southern classic. For this cocktail, combine 1.25 oz. Bulleit Bourbon, 0.5 oz. fresh lime juice, 1 top ginger ale in a copper mug. Stir the concoction and garnish with a lime wedge.

There are several important questions when it comes to planning your wedding: DJ v. a band, indoor v. outdoor, traditional v. contemporary. You can now add buffet vs. plated meals to that list of questions. One may assume that buffets are the more economical choice, but caterers often have to prepare 1/3 more food to provide for guests that insists on seconds or thirds. Don’t let that stop you from choosing this option because the variety of sides and entrees that you can offer often outweighs the extra cost.

Tanqueray/ Classy Cocktail

It sometimes seems that every new trend is to break with tradition or to be more informal. If that is not for you, then opt for this classy Tanqueray martini that will remind your wedding guests that trends don’t last forever, and somethings are best left unchanged. For this classy cocktail, stir and strain 1 oz. Tanqueray London Dry Gin, 1 oz. dry vermouth and 1 dash orange bitters. Garnish with a lemon twist.

Trends Couples often have strong connections to the place where they first fell in love. That is why the newest trend is to choose local options. The farm to table obsession has found its way to weddings. Couples are electing to serve bison in Western states, crab on the Atlantic coast or shrimp and grits on the gulf. Whatever option you choose, the secret is fresh, locally sourced ingredients that add an extra element of character to your reception. It is easy to neglect the fact that wedding guests may have worked up an appetite after dancing the night away. Sometimes just serving a main course might not be enough. Thankfully food trucks serving heaps of late-night comfort foods can just the right crowd pleaser. The popularity of food trucks in the past few years is due, in large part, to the nearly endless variety of food they serve. Don’t hesitate to include a food truck to serve your favorite street food at your wedding.

SVM

Don Julio/ Summery Sweet

If your wedding falls in the hot summer months, consider serving this refreshing cocktail with fresh Latin American inspired seafood. The classic mojito is arguably the world’s most refreshing cocktail thanks to the combination of smooth tequila fresh lime and mint. For this summery cocktail, simply mix 1½ oz. Don Julio Blanco Tequila, ½ oz. fresh lime juice, ½ oz. simple syrup fresh mint, muddled in a mixing glass, add ice and shake vigorously. Add club soda and pour into a highball glass. Finally garnish with a mint sprig. svm

hen planning a wedding, picking the honeymoon can be the most stressful part. Should you stick to the Caribbean? No, that’s what everyone does. Should you venture to Europe? Maybe, but wouldn’t you like to get a little sun? Finding somewhere new and interesting can be difficult when you’re trying to also manage the flowers and call your caterer. Well, look no further, Vietnam is the place to go!

HISTORY After the tragic and controversial Vietnam War ended and the United States left the country, Vietnam went through many changes and iterations. In recent years, the country has made large strides in political peace. Thanks to improved diplomatic relations, the US and Vietnam have been working together again for over twenty years. Thanks, President Bill Clinton. However, the State Department warns visitors to remain vigilant of large crowds and pickpockets, but does not discourage people from visiting. The country itself is quite striking. Some of the most beautiful places in the world are located within this small, colorful nation. With eight UNESCO World Heritage sites to visit, honeymooners have their pick of unique adventures which are unmatched in any other place in the world. This is the honeymoon for explorers looking to tap into untouched beauty.

1

EXPLORE HALONG BAY: A trip to Vietnam would be incomplete without a cruise around Halong Bay. The bay is filled with beautiful sea greens and blues, colorful floating houses and markets dot the water. Amazing limestone spikes, called karsts, arise from the water creating a truly other-worldly experience. This bay was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1994 and is today the jewel of northern Vietnam. Take a river cruise and sleep a night in the bay. If you’re a more experienced traveler, then rent a kayak and explore the wonders of the bay yourself. Just watch out for the river cruises!

2 1- Sa Pa is a town in northwest Vietnam not far from the Chinese border. The rice terrace fields, among the most popular tourist attractions in Vietnam. 2- Cycling tour of Hoi An. 3- The Son Doong Cave in Vietnam is the biggest cave in the world. It’s over 5.5 miles long, has a jungle and river, and could fit a 40-story skyscraper within its walls. 4- The Thang Long Water Puppet Theatre in Hanoi.

BIKE TOUR OF HOI AN: Cycle tours are increasingly popular in this country, but none can match a ride through Hoi An. Book a tour through Hoian Cycling for a no worries, guided tour. You’ll get to experience any number of sites depending on which package you choose—there are six! You can opt for a standard afternoon tour, or you can really immerse yourself in the culture by going on an overnight homestay with Hoian Cycling-sponsored homes. The day trips include visits to colorful markets, historic and religious sites, rice wine tasting, water buffalo riding excursions and riverfront views.

3

AQUATIC THEATRE: Partake in the centuries-old art form by seeing a show at Thang Long Water Puppet Theatre in Hanoi. According to the theatre, this art form has been around for 1,000 years and gained traction during the Ly-Tran Dynasty in the 11th and 12th centuries. The Hanoi theater has multiple daily shows and it’s location within the city puts visitors within walking distance to restaurants and other activities. HANG SON DOONG: This cave is so large it has its own climate system, complete with clouds and everything. Another UNESCO World Heritage Site, the cave is millions of years old and steeped in mystery and natural beauty. Getting there requires extra effort, so if you want to visit, be sure to set aside extra time for the adventure. WHEN TO VISIT The best time to visit Vietnam is in the early part of the spring and summer, from April to June. While visiting in the more popular months is more expensive, the sun may shine a little more and the temperatures will be perfect for a beach day.

MIA RESORT NHA TRANG BANH MI

CUISINE BANH MI: Any visit to Vietnam would be wasted if you didn’t try banh mi in its country of origin. The banh mi is a classic street food sandwich that is sure to tickle your taste buds. The sandwich itself has French infusion and is made with fresh baked French bread. Vendors will throw on some delicious pickled vegetables, including cucumbers, cilantro and carrots. Then, they add tangy homemade mayonnaise. Thinly sliced meat, traditionally pork, finishes off the sandwich. BUN BO NAM BO: You’ve had pho, but you won’t find it on this list. Instead, opt for the less common but equally delicious bun bo nam bo. This delicious meal is served in a bowl, but unlike pho, doesn’t come with broth. Inside your bowl, you will find dry noodles, beef, mixed veggies and even some sauce. If it’s a good dish, you’ll find notes of garlic and pieces of fresh mango. CA PHE TRUG: This drink, Vietnamese egg coffee, is sometimes called liquid tiramisu. Even though it’s coffee, it’s better off being drank at the end of a meal. The ingredients are simple: egg yolk, sugar and condensed milk. That delicious concoction is poured over a cup of Vietnamese coffee and served warm. There are slight variations on this recipe—some of which include cheese. Don’t fret, though, because no matter which variation you get, it’s sure to be delicious.

M

ary Jane Mitchell has been performing since she took dance classes at age nine. It was a visit to see Hairspray on Broadway that really cemented her dreams to act and sing on stage. She’s danced her way across the hemisphere, working everywhere from New York to a cruise line. After her mother was diagnosed with cancer last fall, Mitchell moved out of her New York apartment to stand by her “best friend.” While her mom is now healthy, Mitchell has turned back to dancing and performing, working on the recent production of Grease at Springer Opera House. She is also working towards her masters in theater education, which she calls “rewarding” as she can share her love of dancing with students and hopefully inspire them. Join SVM as we talk to Mitchell about her role in Columbus State University’s new dance program, what it was like to perform in New York City and how she has transitioned from dancer to actress. You’ve been in dancing your whole life. Was it always your plan to pursue it professionally, or was there a moment that solidified that career choice for you? I started dancing at the age of four at Patty Taylor’s Academy of Fine Arts and began to get very serious with it around age 9. I knew it was something I truly loved but there definitely was one specific moment that I knew dancing was what I wanted to pursue some form of a career in. My mom took me to New York City when I was 13 and we went to see the musical Hairspray on Broadway. There was a young girl about my age who played the character of Little Inez. She was outstanding and after seeing her on that stage I knew performance was what I wanted to do. Life comes full circle, as I will be performing in Columbus State University’s production of Hairspray this summer! I am so fortunate to have had such a supportive family that provided me with the opportunity to pursue such a crazy difficult dream! Moving to New York to work as a professional dancer seems intimidating. How did you grapple with such a drastic lifestyle change while managing to lead such a busy dance career? While some people can acclimate quickly to a huge city, I am the first to say it can be quite difficult. It is easy to pretend that we as artists live a glamorous lifestyle in the fabulous New York City, but the truth is it is extremely hard work. What helped me was surrounding myself with strong friends who eventually became like family. I was fortunate to work at Broadway Dance Center so I took dance class constantly to remind myself what I was there for. After participating in Broadway Dance Center’s Professional Semester, I was lucky to have the legendary jazz teacher, Sheila Barker, as a mentor. She was basically my NYC mom. She was tough, but her criticism was constructive because she wanted me to be the best version of myself. What has been your most memorable stage moment? During my first year living in New York City I had the honor of performing in a tribute to the life of

jazz legend Frank Hatchett. Frank was known as “the doctor of jazz,” and I had the opportunity to take his class when I visited New York as a young girl. Frank passed away December of 2013 and my mentor Sheila Barker helped put together a huge performance celebrating his life. I was invited to share the stage with not just performers who studied under him growing up, but also alongside some of his contemporaries and best friends. It was such a huge honor to be involved in something dedicated to such a primary staple of dance. It will be a moment I will never forget.

Why did you decide to bring your talent and passion for dance back to Columbus? Unfortunately in September of 2016 my mom was diagnosed with Stage IV breast cancer. Within days of finding out the news I flew home to Columbus and only returned back to New York to pack up my things. My mom is my best friend and being home to support her and the rest of my family was and still is my number one priority. Thankfully my mom is doing well and I have had more opportunities to continue pursuing my passion than I even knew possible. I am working alongside the fabulous Karyn Tomczak as the Graduate Assistant to Columbus State University’s new dance minor, while receiving my masters in Theatre Education. I have had the opportunity to perform as a professional in Dancing Stars of Columbus, as well as in front of the iconic Ann Reinking in Columbus State’s first annual Broadway Ball. I am having the opportunity to not only continue growing in my craft, but also to pass on information that I have learned over the years to my students, which is so rewarding. Of all the infamous roles out there for actors and dancers, which one would you love to portray? I am actually playing one of my dream roles right now at the Springer Opera House! During the month of March I will play the role of Cha Cha Digregorio in the Springer’s production of Grease. She made such an impression on audiences during her cameos in the movie and I have always been enamored with her dancing, as well as her sass. I am also a huge fan of the musical Movin’ Out, with music featuring the songs of Billy Joel. There is so much dancing in the show and obviously the music is awesome! Being that I grew up focusing mostly on dance, the addition of singing and speaking on stage is relatively new to me and I absolutely love it. What would you consider to be your greatest dancing and acting achievement? I have had the opportunity to perform so many wonderful places such as Lincoln Center, The Actors Home, Hershey Pennsylvania, and aboard a Royal Caribbean Cruise ship, it is difficult for me to choose. I would probably say the biggest achievement in my dance career was choreographing and performing a number behind “Little Anthony and The Imperials,” televised

on the show, “The View.” I submitted my headshot and resume to the director as I normally did for jobs and when asked not just to perform, but also to choreograph I was thrilled. Getting my makeup done next to Little Anthony and hearing his advice on the crazy ups and downs as a performer was just a bonus! svm

I would probably say the biggest achievement in my dance career was choreographing and performing a number behind “LITTLE ANTHONY AND THE IMPERIALS,” TELEVISED ON THE SHOW, “THE VIEW.” SVM

Son of famous American illustrator Robert Heindel, artist Todd Heindel, doesn’t live in his father’s shadow. Today, the works of Todd Heindel can be found in galleries throughout Europe and Japan. His paintings reflect his infinite love of the female form and his deep respect for the old masters. By ANNA LOGAN

INSPIRATION “My main inspiration is the human form. The body, especially female, is sensual, primal, provocative and torches the most basic instincts in men: desire. Before dancers, I painted exclusively the female form, mostly in solitude.”

odd Heindel has always been an artist. As the son of famous illustrator Robert Heindel, Todd lived and breathed art his entire life. When Todd was a child, his father’s artist friends trapised in and out of the house. He became a skilled special effects artist, taking a job with Lucas Films right out of high school. For 20-plus years, Heindel helped craft some of the beloved characters that graced the silver screen. When digital became king, however, he bowed out and turned his focus to a more traditional medium: paints and canvas. Join SVM as we sit down with Heindel and talk about art, the work of his father and how he tries to distance himself from that shadow. What was your first experience with art as a child? My first serious drawing was at the age of five. I drew my house, quite detailed. I still have it framed and hanging on my wall. Then I got into drawing celebrities I liked from movies and TV.

How did you know you wanted to become an artist? How did your career in art begin? Well, my father was a very successful American illustrator in the 60s, 70s and 80s. I grew up watching him and all his close illustrator friends, which were like a gang of artists, always hanging out together. I grew up with great art and artists all around me. I won a few art awards in high school, but I had an opportunity to move to California and work for Lucas Films, you know, the facility for special effects founded by George Lucas. My older brother scored a job there and notified me when there was a job opening. I took it and Lucas Films took me basically a few months after high school. That experience shifted my attention to the movie industry more so than art at the time, so I eventually moved to Los Angeles and went to school to learn special effects makeup. I worked making creatures for feature films for more than 20 years. I worked with greats like Stan Winston and Rick Baker. By 2000, though, even the legends were losing business due to digital effects. I knew makeup FX glory days were over and I wondered what I could do to make an impression, make a difference with my life and career. I needed hands on creativity; I had no interest in computer effects. My wife helped me realize that there was one thing that stayed consistent in my life-art. No matter where I lived or what I was doing, I always drew, painted, etc on the side. See, I didn’t choose art, it chose me.

Many artists with vastly different styles and from different centuries inspire me.

I AM AN AVID READER AND STUDENT OF ART AND ARTISTS, so my favorite artist choice changes every few weeks.

What do you try to communicate through your works? Since, in recent years, I’ve been painting dancers, I hope to convey movement, grace and passion, just as the dancer portrays through the dance. I want the viewer to be moved by my 2-dimensional interpretation, to feel the motion and emotion from the canvas. Is there an artist you find particularly inspiring? Well, of course my number one inspiration was my father, Robert Heindel, who amazingly found great international success as a fine artist after his illustration career – which is almost unheard of! His fine art career focus was on dance. Even after I left FX makeup and became an artist I never, ever had any intention of painting the exact same subject matter as my father. It just kind of happened. In addition to my dad, I was inspired by Bernie Fuchs, both personally and professionally. However, so many artists with vastly different styles and from different centuries inspire me. I am an avid reader and student of art and artists, so my favorite artist choice changes every few weeks. How would you describe your artistic style? That’s not so easy. I do not like the ultra modern dots or lines or poo in a jar. I love classical art, but yet I live in the 21st century, so I like to refer to my style as “classic contemporary.” What is the first thing you hope to impress upon your audience in each piece? Emotion. passion preferably, but emotion. What do you love to do when you aren’t working in your studio? (Laughs) I’m almost always in my studio. I am almost always working. When I have a few minutes, I like to read, always about art and artists. I think about art nonstop. My art, my life as an artist always occupy my thoughts. In the event I am not actually painting or researching, I do like to spend time with my children, Jake, 17, and Sofie, 12, and my very lovely and patient wife Beth, who grew up in Columbus. svm SVM

adcliffe Bailey’s large, mixed-media paintings address his life as young African American living in Atlanta. This work, called “O Freedom Ova Me,” is made from found objects. They draw on a variety of sources, including historical events, popular culture, family memories and African traditions as they have been changed and preserved in African American culture This particular work is built around an enlargement of a vintage photograph the artist obtained from one of his family albums. The surrounding surface is thickly painted and incorporates a boat motif, which evokes themes of transport, flight and freedom. Bailey also included repeating pairs of SVM

curved lines. These not only recall shapes found in iron balconies all over the South, but also mimic a symbol found on adinkra cloths of West Africa. While he was influenced by historic figures that have transformed and changed the world, he was also influenced by family members, by hismother, his children, and his grandparents. His mother was quietly creating experiences for him to make art when he was a child. She was his first art teacher and is, today, his most important critic. She first introduced him to museums at a young age. His first interactions with the African art of James van der Zee and Jacob Lawrence were the naissance of his artistic self. svm Special thanks to Merecedes Parham, Columbus Museum.

COLUMBUS HERITAGE Every city in the world has a beginning. Those that have survived the tests of time were only able to do so by people that saw promise and endless potential in the city, and the people, itself.

BUSINESS

John Maury Fontaine 1792 - 1866

John was in the grocery business, and was part owner in several steamboats that operated on the Chattahoochee River. He owned cotton warehouses and docks on the river bank. He was also the founder of the first cotton mill along the river.

James Henry Bickerstaff

Mary Ann Stewart Fontaine 1808-1852

JOHN MAURY FONTAINE John Maury Fontaine served as the first Mayor of Columbus, Georgia from 1836 to 1838. He defended the town during the Creek War of 1836 against the Native Muscogee Creek Indians, with the help of Governor William Schley. His portrait, as well of his wife Mary Ann Stewart, painted by Edward Ludlow Mooney (1813-1887), can be found at the Columbus Museum in Columbus, Georgia

he son of a carpenter, he worked his way up the ladder of wealth and power at a young age. More than one of his many titles as a businessman and resident of Columbus are preceded by the adjectives “First” and “Earliest.” He was known for his good nature, charitable giving, and close dealing in his time of nineteenth century Columbus. He is remembered today as the pioneer of politics, industry, and development that contributed to Columbus’ current legacy of finance and manufacturing.

John Fontaine was born July 9, 1792 to Thomas and Clarissa Bruton Fon-

taine of Charleston County, South Carolina. Thomas was the son of Francis Fontaine, Jr. Francis was born in Virginia in 1721. He was the eldest child of his parents, Rev. Francis and Mary Glanisson Fontaine. Francis, Jr. lost his mother when he was twelve years old. He attended William and Mary College shortly thereafter and received a good education before he was pulled out. His father remarried a widow named Susanna Brush Barbor in 1735. She forced her husband to remove his eldest son from the college and sell him into an apprenticeship of a carpenter in Williamsburg, Virginia. A cousin wrote of Mrs. Susanna Fontaine in 1754 saying, “There is a kind of coolness towards her… in most of our family, on account of her treatment of my Uncle’s first children….” SVM

rancis was hardened by the cruelty from his step-mother, and upon completing his apprenticeship, in about 1743, he removed himself to the frontier of New Bern, North Carolina. He was, in the words of the same cousin, “by means of her (Susanna) cruelty, cast off without a rag to cover him….” Francis and his brother, John, also a carpenter, were the only men of their trade in the growing community of New Bern. They built many of the first dwellings there. They had, “all the business of the town,” and quickly became, “beloved and respected.” Francis and his wife, Ann Jasper, had their son Thomas there, in New Bern, in 1752. Thomas and Clarissa Fontaine moved their family, which then included young John Maury, to Georgia in 1795. Thomas was also trained, by his father, as a carpenter and owned a plantation in Warren County, Georgia. Clarissa died in childbirth in 1795 but the baby, Benjamin Bruton Fontaine, survived. Thomas remarried to Sally Threewitts in 1797. Thomas likely served in some capacity during the American Revolution. His older brothers all had service records and Sally was included in the Georgia Land Lottery. Inclusion in the lottery required military service. Thomas died in 1808, but he left his family in comfortable financial standing. His son, John, one of three children, inherited roughly a third of Thomas’ estate.

Benjamin Bruton and Elizabeth Shorter Fontaine circa 1860. Benjamin was the son of Mayor John Fontaine.

John Fontaine remained at home in Warren County while he received his education. On Jan.11, 1825, he married Mary Ann Stewart of Warrenton, Georgia. Mary Ann’s father, Charles D. Stewart, was John’s elder by only a decade. John and Mary Ann lived in Eatonton, Georgia north of Macon for a few years before moving to the frontier settlement of Columbus in 1829, less than a year after its founding. The year of his arrival to Columbus, John Fontaine was listed as a cotton merchant in the city directory. His father-in-law was a wealthy capitalist. Charles Stewart saw in his son-in-law, John, an educated, capable, and vigorous aptitude for business. Together, they founded the consignment mercantile business of Stewart & Fontaine in Columbus. John was also a lawyer and seemingly had his stake in most of the earliest industries of Columbus.

John Fontaine was one of the owners of the Clapps factory in North Highlands Mary Fontaine Pou, 1890 (1869-1934). Daughter of Benjamin B. and Elizabeth Shorter Fontaine. Granddaughter of John and Mary Stewart Fontaine. Wife of John Dozier Pou.

He was in the grocery business, and was part owner in several steamboats that operated on the Chattahoochee River. He owned cotton warehouses and docks on the river bank; as well as, being one of the first founders of the first cotton mill along the river north of Columbus. It was said of him that he was a, “Just and conscientious man as well as a good business man.” He was known amongst the circles of Columbus’ wealthiest pioneer and antebellum citizens. He was popular, as well as trusted. After the incorporation of the City of Columbus, he was elected as the first Mayor on Jan. 2, 1836. He served a two-year term until 1838. He oversaw the beginning of a small war in Columbus during his term and saw it through until its end. A Creek Indian named Jim Henry organized a rogue militia of other Native Americans and led raids on farms around Columbus, which became known as the Creek War of 1836. Mayor John Fontaine requested the governor of Georgia to send men and weapons to Columbus and for the state to intercede to protect the citizens of the county.

It was said of him that he was a, “JUST AND CONSCIENTIOUS MAN AS WELL AS A GOOD BUSINESS MAN.”

He was known amongst the circles of Columbus’ wealthiest pioneer and antebellum citizens. SVM

overnor William Schley of Georgia complied and raised men and weapons to be sent to Columbus. President Andrew Jackson also stepped in and sent Major General Winfield Scott of the U.S. Army to command the forces in Columbus. Mayor Fontaine actually knew the Creek leader, Jim Henry, on a personal level. He had employed him as a clerk in one of his warehouses. Fontaine likely saw combat himself during the conflict, which lasted only a few months. The end result was federal removal of the Native Americans from the region. The firm of Stewart & Fontaine expanded its business endeavors to foreign markets. The two men established direct trade between Columbus and business houses in Liverpool, England. Their ships departed the Columbus docks on the Chattahoochee River for New York and Europe loaded with cotton. The ships returned with dry goods, salt, bacon, and private shipments consigned to the vessels. John conducted a significant amount of business out of Apalachicola, FL, and with his brother Benjamin Bruton, “BB,” who lived seasonally between Tuscaloosa and Mobile, AL.

FONTAINE HOUSE

It was likely during his mayoral term that Fontaine moved his family into his newly built Greek temple of a home on Front Avenue facing the Chattahoochee River. There were born seven of John and Mary Ann’s 13 children. It was also in that house that the Fontaine family lost five of those children as infants, as well as two sons as grown men. Their first child, Charles Stewart Fontaine, departed from Columbus to fight in the war with Mexico in 1848. He died the following year. Another son, John, fell on the battlefield during the War Between the States. John, Sr. also lost his wife in 1852. She was forty-four years old.

John’s own health began to decline while he was grieving the loss of his eldest son and wife. He likely suffered from a stroke, which rendered him partially paralyzed and unable to use the right side of his body. His brother, BB, also passed and left behind a wife and children, whom John took into his own care to ensure that they were supported. He was concerned for his sons, they not having a mother, and wrote to his cousin in 1854 saying, “Yet I feel assured that their happiness, and perhaps mine, will be promoted by my not encumbering them with a step-mother. I have seen so much trouble between children and stepmothers… and for to guard against family trouble I will do the best I can single.” He continued, “A better and more affectionate mother never lived [talking about his own wife], and to have my children annoyed I could not bear.” It seems that John was well aware of his grandfather’s plight due to his temperament

The Fontaine house was built around 1830. The house feautures white ionic columns overlooking the Chattahoochee River. Mary Fontaine Pou, John’s grandaughter, was the last person to live here.

He was popular, as well as, trusted. After the incorporation of the City of Columbus,

HE WAS ELECTED AS THE FIRST MAYOR ON JANUARY 2, 1836. He served a two-year term until 1838. He oversaw the beginning of a small war in Columbus during his term and saw it through until its end. His children continued to live at the large family home on Front Avenue after the passing of their father. John’s son, Benjamin Bruton, married Elizabeth Shorter in 1868. He died two years later, but not before having two daughters. Their eldest, Mary Stewart, married John Dozier Pou. He was the director of Pou Brothers Company, founded by John and his brother Felder, for many years. The Pous had a daughter, Bettie, that grew up in the Fontaine house. Bettie married S. Douglas Mobley of Columbus and they lived in the antebellum home known as St. Elmo for many years with their children. John and Mary Ann Fontaine did not have a single grandson; thus, their family name did not live on. However, the legacy of leadership, development, and generosity of John Fontaine can still be observed today as the modern city of Columbus that evolved from the endeavors of his life here by the river.

John Fontaine in his later years.

Parallel LIVES THE LIGHTER SIDE

We all share common threads in life. Whether it be in enjoying similar TV shows, foods, stores, or the same types of people, all of humanity is connected in one way or another. In essence, we all live through parallel lives - living, breathing and existing through subtle, but ever existent, common pulses.

Diana - Charles

VS

Although the United States rejected any ties to the crown in 1776, many consider John F. Kennedy and Jaqueline Bouvier to be American royalty. This wedding was a dynastic marriage between two powerful New England families.

In the years leading up to their divorce, the pair grew apart quite publically. Prince Charles began an affiar with Camilla Bowles. It is reported that Lady Diana discovered the affiar during an unplanned visit to a country house. Prince Charles and Camilla Bowles married in 2005. Her official title is now Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Cornwall. The wedding was dubbed the “Wedding of the Century” and labeled a “fairytale wedding.” It is estimated that some 750 million people watched the St. Paul’s ceremony on television. In London, over two million well wishers waved to the wedding caravan on its way to the cathedral. The couple and 120 guests went to Buckingham Palace for a wedding breakfast following the ceremony. Diana and Charles made a traditional appearance on a balcony of Buckingham Palace right after, and delighted the crowd when they kissed.

FATHER HONEYMOON

The newlyweds headed down to Acapulco, Mexico for their honeymoon. The sun-streaked vacation happened in the fall of 1953, just in time for JFK to get some deep sea fishing in. After catching a large sailfish on one of his outings, Jackie had the fish mounted. It would later hang in the White House as a testament to JFK’s sportsmanship and to his relationship with Jackie.

John F. Kennedy and Jackie became the youngest Presidential couple to take seat in the White House after JFK’s historic 1960 election. Tragedy struck when he was assassinated in a Dallas, TX motorcade in 1963, just a few weeks after he and Jackie’s tenth wedding anniversary.

TRAGEDY CHURCH

The pair was married inside St. Paul’s Cathedral in London. The July 1981 affair was presided over by the Archbishop of Canterbury, who at the time was Robert Alexander Kennedy Runcie.

Jackie’s father, known as “Black Jack” Bouvier, did not actually walk her down the aisle. The morning of the ceremony, Black Jack had too much to drink and was found drunk in his hotel room just before he was scheduled to walk her down the aisle. Instead, Jackie’s stepfather, Hugh Auchincloss, took the young bride down the aisle.

The pair was married in St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Newport, RI. JFK has been the only United States president to be a member of the Catholic Church. The nuptials were performed by The Archbishop of Boston. The couple was lucky enough to have their union blessed by Pope Pius XII.

Even though he was married to a fashion and beauty icon, JFK had multiple alleged affairs. Perhaps the most famous was his tryst with Marilyn Monroe. The most notable moment of the affair occured when Monroe sang the now infamous and overtly sexual version of “Happy Birthday” in 1962.

MISTRESS

After years of public tension, Lady Diana and Prince Charles divorced in 1996. Lady Diana died one year later in the now infamous Paris car crash after being chased by paparazzi.

POPULARITY

Lady Diana and Prince Charles embarked on a honeymoon through the Mediteranean shortly after the wedding. They traveled aboard the Britannia, a royal yacht which is now a permanent tourist attraction in Edinburgh, Scotland.

Ann Lowe, a preeminent African American fashion designer, designed Jackie’s unique dress. Jackie’s iconic dress was to be modern and simple. Yet, the influence of the Kennedy’s changed the final dress, which was more traditional with a framed neckline and bouffant-style skirt.

Despite Jackie’s wishes to keep the wedding a simple affair, Joseph Kennedy, the groom’s father, did not miss this opportunity to gain diplomatic points. It reportedly took three hours for the wedding couple to shake the hands of every wedding guest. The reception was held on the terrace of the 300 acre Auchincloss oceanfront estate, Hammersmith Farm, for more than twelve hundred guests. The wedding cake, four feet tall, was ordered by Joseph P. Kennedy. Meyer Davis and his orchestra played under a huge canopy.

RECEPTION

Edward John Spencer, whose official title was Viscount Althorp, was Lady Diana’s father. The World War II verteran was the 8th Earl of Spencer. He suffered a stroke in 1976, which led to difficulty when walking Lady Diana down the aisle all those years ago.

THE DRESS

Thirty-five years ago, a beautiful young woman named Lady Diana Spencer walked down the aisle at St. Paul’s Cathedral to wed Prince Charles in what was dubbed the “wedding of the century.”

Designers David and Elizabeth Emanuel created Diana’s infamous dress. The couple had only been working for seven years when Diana selected the pair.
