Living in sunny South Florida, our activities naturally extend beyond land and into the waterways all year long. There aren’t many other places where you can sit outside wearing flip-flops — in December — to watch a procession of ornate boats pass by. Take advantage of the opportunity by heading to one, or all, of these local boat parades.

PALM BEACH COUNTY

Palm Beach Holiday Boat Parade – Kick off the holiday season with this floating procession led by a Zambelli traveling fireworks display. The parade heads from North Palm Beach up the Intracoastal Waterway to the Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse. Festivities begin at 6 p.m. Saturday, December 3, and boats are expected to arrive in Jupiter around 8 p.m. For information, go to www.marinepbc.org/boat-parade.

Holiday Boat Parade – A little further south, you can see festively decorated boats travel along the waterway on Friday, December 9. The parade travels south from the Ocean Avenue Bridge in Lantana to the C-15 Canal in Delray Beach starting at 6:30 p.m. The Boynton Harbor Marina serves as the official watch location for the parade with music, children’s activities and a special visit from Santa. Pompano Beach Holiday Boat Parade -- Whether you are watching or participating, this is a beautiful sight on the Intracoastal Waterway. The parade starts at Lake Santa Barbara and heads north to Hillsboro Boulevard from 7 to 9 p.m. on Friday, December 9. For more information, see www.pompanobeachchamber.com

Winterfest Boat Parade -- Dubbed “The Best Show on H2O,” this procession delivers a delightful display of private boats to corporate mega-yachts. The event takes place on Saturday, December 10 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Spectators line up along Fort Lauderdale’s waterways to watch the annual spectacle that travels

MONROE COUNTY

Key Largo Boat Parade -- Check out the decked-out vessels as participants compete for prizes for most colorful display, most original and best use of theme categories on Saturday, December 10. This year, the parade theme is A Cartoon Christmas. The event begins at 7:30 p.m. at Dusenbury Creek, green channel marker 41, on Blackwater Sound and heads north along the shoreline to Stillwright Point. s this year ends, the promise of new possibilities emerges with the coming of a new year. In addition to personal goals, many parents set family resolutions. After all, most of us consider the health and happiness of our family as important as our own. And, because the family functions as a unit, it makes sense to set a few resolutions for the benefit of everyone under your roof.

Although the success rate for resolutions can be discouraging, experts say that they can stick if they are simple, carefully chosen and realistic. Following are easy, enjoyable family resolutions that offer huge, scientifically-proven rewards for very little effort.

FINDING FAMILY TIME

We all know that family time is vitally important, but how do we squeeze it into those weeknights when work runs late, or school obligations beckon? We safeguard those minutes and then figure out how to turn everyday events into family time. Here are a few suggestions:

SAY NO TO OUTSIDE NONESSENTIALS: It’s so easy for what little free time we do have to get filled with requests from work, school or other obligations. While it would be nice if we could accommodate every request, doing so takes valuable time away from our families. Learn to graciously say no to requests that don’t truly matter so that you can say yes to what does.

WATCH HIGH-QUALITY MEDIA TOGETHER: It’s probably unrealistic to banish all screen time from your routine, but you can maximize it by finding regular, high-quality or educational programs that you can enjoy as a family. Use this as a time to talk about your own life experiences or lessons that come up during the show.

INVOLVE KIDS IN MEAL PREP AND CHORES: There is no way around making dinner and tidying up, but you can turn this into family time if you allow your kids to participate. Admittedly, the chores may take a little longer and require more patience when your children are involved, but, you can teach them valuable life skills, encourage work ethic and have the chance to talk to them about their day. Even better, children often feel a deep sense of pride when contributing to family life.

FIND A FAMILY HOBBY: Shared hobbies are a great way to build memories and spend quality time with your kids. Consider activities like geocaching, horseback riding, camping, stamp collecting, model building or martial arts. If your child is already passionate about a hobby, ask her to teach it to you. Sharing in this way will make her feel valued, while you will feel included.

MAXIMIZE

FAMILY TIME BY DOWNPLAYING DOWNTIME:

A recent study showed that on weekdays, the average family spends around 37 minutes of quality time together. Fortunately, it’s possible to increase these minutes by hacking our downtime. Consider this: many people spend an average of three hours per day on social media, television or the internet. Time available for meaningful family bonding can be lost in front of screens. Be deliberate with evenings, weekends and downtime. Don’t let these minutes slip away.

EAT HEALTHY MEALS TOGETHER

AS OFTEN AS POSSIBLE: Eating meals as a family saves money, boosts health and provides behavioral benefits for children. A study published in the Journal of Adolescent Health found that adolescents who dined with their families less than three times per week were more likely to participate in risky behaviors like drugs, alcohol and smoking. Experts at Stanford Children’s Health say that younger children who regularly eat with their parents are more confident and connected. Even busy families can find time to break bread together. Grab-and-go grocery store options, crockpot meals or made-ahead casseroles mean that gathering as a family is feasible, even on hectic nights.

PRIORITIZE FAMILY GAME

NIGHT: Although it can be challenging to pry kids away from electronics, a family game night is an easy way to foster a face-to-face connection. This simple, inexpensive ritual yields huge benefits like improved academic performance, enhanced motor skills and increased sportsmanship. Researchers from Carnegie Mellon found that playing academic games improves classroom performance. And the University of Florida found that kids who use strategy with their parents have better memory and problem-solving skills outside of family life. To ensure enthusiastic participation, turn off electronics and choose games that are suitable for everyone. If you have a multi-age family, pair up younger kids with older siblings and alternate easy games with harder ones. Take turns choosing games and regularly add new options to the rotation.

REGULARLY READ TO (OR WITH)

YOUR KIDS: Countless studies confirm the benefits of reading to children. Experts say that children who have regular exposure to books enjoy lasting academic and social benefits. Specifically, when a parent reads even one book per day to a child, it exposes him to 290,000 additional words by kindergarten. Even better, reading to your child at bedtime makes him much more likely to take the initiative to read on his own. Adolescents who are regular readers have higher levels of empathy and exhibit fewer risky behaviors. Regardless of age, many kids need a parent’s ongoing encouragement. Studies have shown a large decline in reading at around fourth grade. Not so coincidentally, this is when many parents assume that reading is a school-day activity. If your child will no longer read with you, discuss the books you’re both reading. Or, listen to audiobooks together on the way to school. Making books an ongoing priority will encourage lifelong intellectual curiosity.

SPEND MORE TIME OUTSIDE:

A recent study revealed that the majority of adults list their fondest childhood memories as experiences that happened outdoors. Playing outside with friends, and visiting the ocean or seashore, were among the most popular responses. Yet, today’s children spend more time indoors than any generation before them. According to the National Recreation and Park Association, American children spend four to seven minutes per day playing outdoors while many spend up to seven hours in front of electronic screens. It’s less challenging to get children outside if you make it a family activity. Go for a family walk after dinner. Play flag football in the backyard, or head for the neighborhood park. You’ll be rewarded with significant benefits such as increased immunity, enhanced cognitive and social development, and increased attention span.

PRIORITIZE CIVILITY : A survey of more than 1,000 participants found that 94 percent of respondents believed that civility is in a

sharp, detrimental decline. The current climate of incivility is impossible to ignore. We see it in news coverage, on social media and during our everyday activities. Bullying, lying, cheating and showing an utter lack of empathy for others are all common forms are incivility. Thankfully, children learn acceptable behavior by watching their parents. They are always observing how we talk, how we behave, and how we treat one another. So it is possible to create a culture of respect in our own homes. We can demonstrate how to disagree with positivity, stress the importance of kindness and empathy, and insist that all family members treat others with dignity and respect. Additionally, kids who witness their parents prioritizing civility are better protected from the harm that this type of societal stress can cause to their health and their sense of well-being. None of these resolutions require large amounts of time, effort or money, but they are all worth trying. January may be a good time to begin, but quality family time is important all year long.

PEACEFUL SOLUTIONS FOR HANDLING THE HOLIDAYS

When a family is divided by divorce, it creates added stress during the holidays with regard to child visitation, gift giving and attending children’s programs. But it doesn’t have to be that way. If divorced parents can set aside their differences, the holidays can be a little less stressful for everyone.

At the top of most children of divorce’s wish lists is that their parents would reconcile differences and find a balance with regard to communication, cooperation and compromise. Here is a list of things parents can do to make that holiday wish come true.

• DO put your children first. Think about what they need for the holiday to be a good experience for them. Focus your efforts on quality time rather than material objects.

• DO set aside personal differences, past hurts and disappointments with your ex-spouse. This will make the holidays less stressful for everyone.

• DO make a schedule for visitation and have a solid plan for gift-giving and attending children’s events. If the conversation gets heated, call a time out and arrange another opportunity to talk.

• DO establish a good working relationship with your exspouse on behalf of your children. You don’t have to be buddies; you do need to be a team player.

• DO prepare your children ahead of time for what to expect over the holidays.

• DO be on time and keep goodbyes short when transitioning from home to home to avoid extra stress.

• DO your own communicating. Avoid making your children messengers.

• DO recognize the importance of your children’s relationship with their extended relatives on both sides of the family. Keep grandparents and other family members central in your children’s lives.

• DO attend these programs with other family members or come alone. This is not a time to introduce casual dates to the family. The focus should be on your child, not you or someone new in your life.

• DO give each parent equal time alone to interact with your children at these events. If possible, coordinate schedules so that one parent takes the child to the event and the other brings him home.

• DO allow children to discuss past holidays if the subject arises. Remember that most kids grieve the loss of an intact family with every holiday and at each stage in life. Be sensitive to this and keep an open line of communication with your children.

• DO have reasonable expectations. The first few years after separation and divorce can be the hardest time to enjoy the holidays. Don’t expect things to be perfect. It takes time to heal wounds, establish new traditions and adjust to a new family unit.

• DO take care of yourself during the holidays. You’ll be a better parent if you get proper rest, exercise and nutrition, as well as the emotional support from others you need.

• DO remember the best gift you can give your children is your loving attention and the opportunity and freedom to love their other parent.

THE TRUTH ABOUT SANTA CLAUS

Awonderful thing about being a parent is associating with nutty little people who believe in magic. A not-so-wonderful thing about being a parent is wising them up. Day after day we straighten out funny misconceptions and cute mispronunciations, relentlessly transforming kids into useful citizens who will hold jobs and pay their bills. I guess that’s good.

When my daughter Marie was 5, we were in the backyard looking up at the sky. She asked, “Where would clouds take you?”

I replied, “Nowhere. They’re like fog; if you sat on one, you’d fall right through.”

“Oh,” she said, disappointed. I felt like I’d reached up, grabbed her ankle and yanked her right out of the sky. Years later, her little sister Wendy asked me the same question. But that time I countered, “Where do YOU think they’d take you?”

“To Dreamland. You could visit your dreams there,” she said. Mmmm, better.

Wouldn’t it be wonderful to put off orientation and correction for as long as possible? If I had it to do over again, I’d keep a running list of each foolish notion in a notebook and then finally one evening I’d say, “Marie, we need to talk.”

Sitting on her bed, I’d open the notebook. “First of all, there is no such word as ‘samoo.’ I know we’ve been using it ever since you first said it at age 2, but the word is ‘sandwich.’ Likewise, ‘jamoos’ are ‘pajamas’ to the rest of the English-speaking world.”

“Oh,” she’d say.

Moving down the list, I’d say, “Now, about your teachers: They don’t live at the school and they don’t serve you free of charge like your parents do. They may enjoy their work, but they do it for money. Also, the moon does not really follow us when we drive at night. That’s an optical illusion. Think about it: How could it simultaneously follow every car? About flying: There is no secret of arm-flapping or telekinesis that will make you fly. People just can’t do it. Also, fairies, unicorns and leprechauns are all made up.”

“But I’ve seen them on TV. There’s even a leprechaun who does cereal commercials,” Marie would protest, her face pale and eyes wide.

“That leprechaun is a cartoon. Somebody drew him,” I’d say. “There’s more: Dinosaurs are real, but they are all dead.” “No!” she’d gasp. As a tear ran down her cheek, she’d ask, “Why are you telling me all this tonight?”

He came to the middle school once. He walks on his hind legs and is almost as smart as a person.”

“He IS a person – in a costume,” I’d say. “I wanted you to know that so you wouldn’t embarrass yourself. And since we’d be talking anyhow, I figured it’s time to tell you everything else.”

“This is a lot to take in,” she’d say sadly.

“Yes,” I’d say, “But the important things haven’t changed. Your mom and I still love you, and so do your sisters –although they are just humans and not enchanted beasts.”

Marie would ask suddenly, “Hey! What about Santa Claus?”

“Oh, he’s real, but seldom seen. He sends out representatives in red suits to ask kids what they want. They use high-powered smartphones to report back to him at the North Pole so he can coordinate toy production with his elves. And don’t let any upperclassmen tell you differently, alright?”

“OK, Dad. And thanks.”

Do I seem inconsistent? I’m sorry, but it’s NEVER the right time to betray Santa.
