Faith & Full Stewardship

ost often when we think of stewardship, the idea of a healthy financial relationship with God and home is our first thought. Fortunately, there is far more involved in faithful stewardship than the single task of financial management. Let’s begin by understanding the definition of stewardship. Merriam-Webster dictionary states: the conducting, supervising, or managing of something; especially: the careful and responsible management

of something entrusted to one’s care. As bible believing Christians, what do we understand as having been placed in our care? In Genesis 1:26, 28 and James 1:17, God makes it clear that we are to have dominion over the creatures of the earth, and that every good thing is a gift from Him. These are the things that we have been entrusted with. To take it a step further, let us investigate our gifts from God. Too long to list extensively, but most lists would include: money, time, children, homes, our minds, bodies, environment, and much more. Another, and maybe unexpected gift, is the gift of character. Read this excerpt from Christian author, and Seventh-Day Adventist Pioneer, J.L. McElhany, “While the principles of a stewardship concern material things, they are, above all, of a spiritual character. The service of Christ is a reality. The Lord requires certain things of us in order that he may do certain things for us. The doing of those required things in harmony with the divine will lifts the whole matter of stewardship to a high spiritual plane. The Lord is not exacting. He does

his months theme is stewardship. In the ninth volume of the Testimonies, written by my favorite gospel writer appear these words, “A steward identifies himself with his master. He accepts the responsibilities of a steward, and he must act in his master’s stead, doing as his master would do were he presiding. His master’s interests become his. The position of a steward is one of dignity because his master trusts him. If in any wise he acts selfishly and turns the advantages gained by trading with his lord’s goods to his own advantage, he has perverted the trust reposed in him.” {9T 246.3} In the book of Matthew chapter 25, Jesus tells a parable that describes the kingdom of heaven. Jesus begins the parable by saying: “For [the kingdom of heaven is] as a man traveling into a far country, [who] called his own servants, and delivered unto them his goods.” (vs 12) As the story would have it this man then leaves each of his servants with a responsibility. He entrusted each of his servants to make good use of the various resources that he provided for them. To one servant he gave five talents, to another he gave two, and still another he gave only one. The master gave each servant a talent that was comparable with his abilities. No servant was outweighed with more than he could handle. Isn’t it wonderful that God doesn’t overdraft our account www.facebook.com/southgate.church.1
with expectations that exceed our abilities, that he doesn’t charge our invoice with unaccounted potential. Upon the masters return he came with an expectation. The master expected a return on his investment. The story illustrates the significant interest that the master had in his servants investment. With keen interest the master is observing and assessing what the servant is doing. Every person is accountable for the gifts he/she has received. God gives us an initial investment that he expects us to build upon. We will not simply be responsible for what we have, but for a bountiful return. Faithfulness requires return on more than what was given. To be faithful is to grow your talent and improve upon what you were given. It is taking what you have and making more. Faithfulness is starting with a plot and ending with a harvest. Faithfulness is starting with a seed and ending with a tree, starting with a meal (five loaves and two fish) and ending with a feast (feeding five thousand), starting with division but ending with multiplication, starting with a foundation and ending with a building. The talents in the story entrusted to each servant represents Gods investment in us. In the process of God building his kingdom (through us) He is building his kingdom IN US. Our use of talents to build God’s kingdom is the means by which God builds our character. That is why the

master rebuked the servant for being slothful. The servant by being slothful destroyed his character thus the master called him “wicked.” My favorite gospel writer wrote these words: “A noble character is earned by individual effort through the merits and grace of Christ. God gives the talents, the powers of the mind; we form the character. It is formed by hard, stern battles with self. Conflict after conflict must be waged against hereditary tendencies. We shall have to criticize ourselves closely, and allow not one unfavorable trait to remain uncorrected.” COL 331.1 Notice what she says, ‘God gives the talents’; (thats his investment) but we form the character (thats our return). It is important to realize that we are to use the talents we have been given for the glory of Gods kingdom. We must not bury our birthright, we must not put away our potential. We must advance the cause of God, for in doing so we advance our own good, we progress our own potential, we construct our own character. When we fail to use the gifts entrusted to us we become wicked. God gives to us the means of being able to produce a song in his heart. We have the capacity to make heaven proud, to bring joy to the masters face. Let us demonstrate the faithfulness of the servants who received the five and the two talents. Why? Because God is looking with great interest on (His) interest! www.southgatesda.com

Quinoa: The Super Seed
High in protein & gluten-free, quinoa is a nutritious seed that puts conventional whole grains to shame Call it the seed that eats like a grain. Quinoa, virtually unheard of five years ago, has recently achieved cultlike status among foodies and health-seekers who have had their fill of conventional grains like wheat, rice and barley. A complete protein that contains a trove of other important nutrients, quinoa (pronounced KEEN-wah) is now being touted as the supergrain of the future. That’s funny, because it was a staple for the ancient Incas of South America, where most of the world’s quinoa crops are still grown. In fact, the sudden popularity of quinoa in the United States and elsewhere has driven up its price, making it unaffordable for many of the people who grow it for a living (a good reason to consider buying fair-trade quinoa). Many Americans still haven’t been exposed to this mild-flavored, gluten-free superfood, and even fewer have made it a staple in their kitchens. That’s apt to change as word of the seed spreads, since it’s easy to prepare and versatile enough to improvise with. Read on and learn how to incorporate quinoa into your cooking repertoire — and into your high-vitality eating plan. Quick and Easy: Tips for Enjoying Quinoa Keep cooked quinoa on hand buy? Animal Encounters!
By Regina & Akemi West Editor & Baby Member rdaviswest@gmail.com
And God created great whales, and every living creature that moveth ... and God saw that it was good. -Gen 1:21
I’m not sure how it all started, but somehow I was inclined to buy a rabbit for the baby (Akemi, 18 months old). And like most parents, I began to do my research. Quickly, I learned that pet rabbits were quite a bit of work and were not very social and required rabbitproofing the entire house ... not for me! So, I searched the top ten small house pets (minus cats & dogs): hamster, gerbil, mouse, rat, guinea pig, chinchilla, rabbit, ferret, parakeet, and cockatiel. In the words of Akemi, “No, no, no!” However, all was not lost. I started to research the “easiest fish to care for”, and the result was the beta and our animal of the month, the guppy! The guppy is a beautiful and small freshwater fish. They come in so many colors and varieties. It is also known as a livebearing aquarium fish because they retain the eggs inside the body and give birth to live, free-swimming young. They live from 2-4 years, require only a small tank, need little
GUPmaintenance, and add beauty to the home. The object lesson I hope to teach Akemi is that we are to care for all living things. She will also eventually learn to feed and clean up after her pet. At the same time, our new pet will not require so much time as to take away from our ability to care for others. We will be free to visit the needy, other families, and in the words of Ellen G. White, we can freely “exercise [our] talent upon human beings who have a heaven to win and a hell to shun.” We can’t wait to name our fish ... hmmmm, Abraham, Ruth, Daniel, Hadassah, Ben ... !!!?!!!?

to learn that no man or woman is degraded by honest toil. That which degrades is idleness and selfish dependence. Idleness fosters self-indulgence, and the result is a life empty and barren-a field inviting the growth of every evil. “The earth which drinketh in the rain that cometh oft upon it, and bringeth forth herbs meet for them by whom it is dressed, receiveth blessing from God; but that which beareth thorns and briers is rejected, and is nigh unto cursing; whose end is to be burned. Many of the branches of study that consume the student’s time are not essential to usefulness or happiness; but it is essential for every youth to have thorough acquaintance with everyday duties. If need be, a young woman can dispense with a knowledge of French and algebra, or even of the piano; but it is indispensable that she learn to make good bread, to fashion neatly-fitting garments; and perform efficiently the many duties that pertain to homemaking. To the health and happiness of the whole family nothing is more vital than skill and intelligence on the part of the cook. By ill-prepared, unwholesome food she may hinder and even ruin both the adult’s usefulness
and the child’s development. Or by providing food adapted to the need of the body, and at the same time inviting a palatable, she can accomplish as much in the right as otherwise she accomplishes in the wrong direction. So, in many ways, life’s happiness is bound up with faithfulness in common duties. Since both men and women gave a part in home-makng, boys as well as girls should gain a knowledge of household duties. To make a bed and put a room in order, to wash dishes, to prepare a meal, to wash and repair his own clothing, is a training that need not make any boy less manly; it will make him happier and more useful. And if girls, in turn, could learn to harness and drive a horse [work
on a car], and to use the saw and the hammer, as well as the rake and the hoe, they would be better fitted to meet the emergencies of life. Let the children and youth learn from the Bible how God has honored the work of the everyday toiler. Let them read of “the sons of the prophets” (II Kings 6:1-7), students at school, who were building a house for themselves, and for whom a miracle was wrought to save from loss the ax that was borrowed. Let them read of Jesus the carpenter, and Paul the tentmaker, who with the toil of the craftsman linked the highest ministry human and divine. Let them read of the lad whose five loaves were used by the Saviour in that wonderful miracle for feeding of the multitude; of Dorcas the seamstress, called back from death, that she might continue to make garments for the poor; of the wise woman described in the Proverbs, who “seeketh wool and flax, and worketh willingly with her hands;” who “giveth meat to her household, and their task to her maidens;” who “planteth a vineyard, and stregtheneth her arms;” who “stretcheth out her hand to the poor; yea, ... reacheth forth her hands to the needy;” who “looketh well to the ways her household, and eateth no the bread of idleness.” Proverbs 31:13,15, R.V. 31:16,17,20,27 {Ed. 215-217}

not arbitrarily demand either that we serve Him or that we recognize Him by returning to Him of those things which He gives to us. But He has so arranged the divine economy that as a result of our working in harmony with Him in these things, there flow back to us great spiritual blessings. We shall be destitute of these blessings if we fail to cooperate with Him in carrying out his plans, and thereby deprive ourselves of those things which we need most.” {Foreword CS 5.3} Therefore, it is extremely important that we take our Christian stewardship seriously, as it is our character that we take to heaven. “The Only Treasure Taken From This World—A character formed according to the divine likeness is the only treasure that we can take from this world to the next. Those who are under the instruction of Christ in this world will take every divine attainment with them to the heavenly mansions. And in heaven we are continually to improve. How important, then, is the development of character in this life.” {CG 161.1} It is also made clear in Matthew 7:21, “Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven.” With this sack of
knowledge now under our belts, let’s understand how our faith must be intertwined with our acts of stewardship. Stewardship of spiritual growth—Beginning with the example of the Thessalonians. Paul gave many thanks for their faithfulness in spite of their circumstances. “We give thanks to God always for you all … Remembering without ceasing your work of faith, and labour of love, and patience of hope in our Lord Jesus Christ. … For this cause also thank we God without ceasing, because, when ye received the work of God which ye heard of us, ye received it not as the word of men, but as it is in truth, the word of God, which effectually worketh also in you that believe.” (1 Thess 1:2-3, 2:13) Stewardship of character & resources—Recall the trials of Joseph. How long did he patiently suffer? Yet, by his faithfulness, God revealed His plan in Joseph’s life and Joseph because of his faith was also able to forgive his brothers and protect the land from famine. Stewardship of body & worship—Then there
www.facebook.com/southgate.church.1
is the story of Daniel. He refused the meat offered by King Nebuchadnezzar. Neither did he change his form of daily worship despite the plans and laws designed to destroy him. As a result, Daniel was unharmed in the lion’s den and was a shining witness before King Darius. Stewardship of trust in God—Let us not forget Hadassah, or Queen Esther. This woman, in spite of the threat of death, had faith that God would use her to save her people. Esther, understanding that the pillar of faith is through prayer, commanded that her people fast and pray as she prepared to stand before the king without being called. And what about young David in the battle against Goliath? The Lord had trained him up as he trained Moses in the employment of a shepherd, and through this experience David loved the Lord and had faith that God was with him. “… and there came a lion, and a bear, and took a lamb out of the flock: And I went out after him, and smote him, and delivered it out of his mouth: and when he arose against

me, I caught him by his beard, and smote him, and slew him. Thy servant slew both the lion and the bear: and this uncircumcised Philistine shall be as one of them, seeing he hath defied the armies of the living God. David said moreover, The Lord that delivered me out of the paw of the lion, and out of the paw of the bear, he will deliver me out of the hand of this Philistine.” (1 Samuel 17:34-37) Our wonderful God has given us many examples, such as Enoch, Noah, Mary, and even JESUS! With so much evidence before us, it is clear how our faith effects our attitude and actions toward stewardship. Pray for stewardship in ALL things. Combine love, faith, and the fullness of stewardship. This will lead to a faith-full life of stewardship! “Rejoice evermore. Pray without ceasing. In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you. Quench not the Spirit. Despise not prophesyings. Prove all things; hold fast that which is good. Abstain from all appearance of evil. And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. Faithful is he that calleth you, who also will do it. Brethren, pray for us.” 1 Thess 5:16-25 Pray for one another. www.southgatesda.com

Spring Into Exercise! Spring has officially arrived. And although the weather still permits a few rainy days here and there, it is now a great time to dust off your sneakers and get outside. Yet, even when those April showers happen to occur, I recommend an indoor routine that will get your heart pumping. The good news is that your workout can be as short as 30 minutes. Studies have shown that even a small amount of exercise is greatly beneficial to improve health. In fact, you can exercise for 30 minutes once a day, or for 15 minutes twice a day. The key is simply to get your heart pumping, and to just do it! You can bounce on a small trampoline or ride a stationary bike. For added muscle building and bone strength, try warming up with the opposite arm & leg exercise. You start on all fours and raise your right arm and left leg at the same time, then switch to the other side. Do three sets in a row, and 20 reps per side, non-stop. This will allow you plenty of time still to do three sets of 30 crunches, going immediately into a plank, if possible. As you www.facebook.com/southgate.church.1

get stronger and more motivated, add mountain climbers, push-ups, stationary squats, or even the Superman with your arms straight out. There are so many options you can find on the internet. But as the weather permits, take full advantage of the benefits of being outdoors. Sister White was even inspired to teach that exercise is also important for the internal organs and faculties of the body. In addition, exercise, sunshine and fresh air are three components of God’s Eight Laws of Health. You can get them all at once when you venture out for a sunny stroll, power walk, garden work, or even get creative at your local park. Who cares who’s watching! Just use a bench for bench lunges, then move to the other side for one or two-handed push-ups. You can even opt to ride a bike, find a tennis, frisbee or ping-pong partner, or even go swimming. The options are unlimited. It’s simply up to you and your will power to make a healthy addition to your lifestyle.
