Once again we have been exceptionally pleased with the performance of our sixth form students. Our 2018 results placed South Hunsley students in the top 10% of all post 16 providers nationally for the progress they made from their already very strong GCSE grades. Students performed exceptionally well across the board with 13 students attaining all A* - A grades and 45% of students gaining at least one A* - A grade. 25% of all grades were at A* - A and 71% of students achieved A* - B grades. Students performed particularly well in a number of subjects including Biology (42% A* - A), Economics (29% A* - A) and English Literature (47% A* - A). This was the second year of A Level reforms, with lots of our students taking papers in reformed subjects for the first time.

ly l a n o nati

As in most years the principal destination of our Year 13 leavers was Higher Education with over 80% of students applying through UCAS to continue their education to degree level and beyond. The strong results seen at A Level and equivalent has meant that over 86% of our university applicants were successful in gaining places on courses at their first choice university, including many on high tariff courses at highly competitive universities. This is an increase of 6% on the previous year. We also work hard to support our students who decide that university is not the route for them and we are really pleased with some of the impressive apprenticeships students have secured, both locally and nationally.

Our teachers are some of the best in the business - friendly, experienced, full of ideas and real experts in their subjects. Above all, they are committed to helping you get the grades you need for whatever you plan to do next. You’ll find lessons in our sixth form very different to school. You’ll have much more independence and responsibility for your own learning. However, our teachers and sixth form team are always available to offer you any support, advice and guidance. Our teachers always make sure your lessons are challenging and inspiring and Ofsted said: “Teachers’ skilful use of questioning to draw out students’ understanding, to tackle any misconceptions and challenge their critical and creative thinking skills further.” “Students take an active part in the lesson and as a result develop independence, listening and collaborative skills successfully.” “Teachers’ high expectations and careful use of information about students’ current abilities provide varied activities that challenge everyone, whatever their starting points.”

Student Union South Hunsley’s Student Union is run by students, for students. The Student Union sets the student calendar for the sixth form and organises all the main student events including the Year 13 Prom and fun charity activities such as the Christmas Fayre. On a more serious note, the Student Union also elects representatives to communicate the students’ view to the senior leaders who run the sixth form so students’ opinions are heard and considered when we are looking at ways to improve your sixth form experience.

“Whatever your interests, there is something for you at South Hunsley Sixth Form.” 10

South Hunsley has a strong sporting tradition which continues into the sixth form. You can join one of our teams and represent South Hunsley on a local, regional and national level. The PE Department will work with you to give you access to the sport volunteering hours you need either at South Hunsley School or through the links they’ve established with our local primary schools. You could also find yourself as a Sports Captain for the college and in your final year of sixth form become a member of the PE Department as a Young Ambassador for PE. This will see you attend conferences and give you the opportunity to champion and promote school sport to other students.

Tom Rivers Apprenticeship with Tigers Trust

“After finishing at sixth form in 2017, I started a year’s apprenticeship with Tigers Trust. South Hunsley PE staff made me aware of the apprenticeship and having taken part in the Higher Sports Leadership programme at South Hunsley, my application stood out. The experiences I gained through the HSLA programme were transferable to my role at Tigers Trust, for example in July 2018 I led a team of disability footballers into a competition at Manchester City’s training ground, which was a fantastic experience for all involved. The sports facilities and staff at South Hunsley are a credit to the school and I’m now looking forward to pursuing my goal of working my way up the FA coaching tree and having more opportunities to work as a coach within football clubs.

As a sixth form student you will have access to a range of financial support depending on your circumstances.

At the beginning of Year 12 you will be assigned a Personal Tutor who will offer one-to-one academic mentoring and pastoral support to ensure your time at South Hunsley Sixth Form is happy and successful.

All students can receive subsidised bus travel, ensuring a single journey to our sixth form will cost you no more than 70p. To take advantage of these rates you need to buy either a bus pass or bus vouchers from our finance office. You might also qualify for a bursary, which helps those most in need with travel and equipment costs, or you could also apply for one-off support payments.

Academic Mentoring As a further level of support, some students will be assigned an academic mentor. The academic mentor will work with students, alongside teachers and tutors, to help them make the best transition into sixth form and make good progress.

14

Everything we do in our sixth form is to help you stand out from the crowd and shine in your chosen field. We are here to listen, advise and support you in your choices and there’s always someone available to discuss the options available to you.

Oxbridge

HE+ Programme

If you are aiming for a place at Oxford or Cambridge you will be invited to join our Early Applicant Scheme as you’ll need to make an application to UCAS earlier than most other students. Also, as places at Oxford and Cambridge are highly competitive, you’ll need to start evidencing your skills and wider passion for your subject area from the moment you start in sixth form.

If your goal after sixth form is to secure a place on a Russell Group University or join a highly competitive degree course, you’ll be interested in the HE+ Programme.

We offer you additional support and give you the chance to visit Oxford and Cambridge universities to make sure you can fully prepare your application and perfect your interview technique well before the deadline for submissions in the October of Year 13. Thanks to the success of this scheme, we see students head off every year to these very competitive courses and institutions.

Russell Group Many of our students have ambitions to access a HE course at one of the 24 leading UK universities that make up the Russell Group. In 2018, over 28% of our students progressed onto Russell Group universities. If you are aiming to access a place at a Russell Group university you will be invited to join our HE+ initiative in Year 12. This is run throughout Year 12 by the University of Cambridge and its colleges with South Hunsley Sixth Form to help you feel more confident and well prepared when applying to higher education in Year 13.

HE+ is run in conjunction with Cambridge University and supports students in preparing strong applications to competitive universities. You’ll attend HE+ events where you have guidance in how to develop your subject knowledge and interests beyond the A Level syllabus, and some students also have the opportunity to attend a residential visit to Kings College Cambridge.

Naomi Prutton Deputy head teacher, Springhead Primary School “One of my biggest achievements since leaving South Hunsley was attending the University of Cambridge. I would never have thought that I could get a place at Cambridge, but with the encouragement of the Head of Sixth Form, I did. I have always wanted to be a teacher and after 12 years I became a deputy head teacher and have recently become an acting head teacher part time. Teachers believed in me even when I didn’t believe in myself.” “I hope that my name is one that my students remember in the future, as someone who believed in them.“

Become a Leader

Earn while you learn

Developing leadership and having the ability to work in a team are essential for your future employability and our Student Union offers you the opportunity to build up these skills in a number of ways.

Whilst studying with us you can also find part time work that fits nicely around your studies.

Every year, sixth form students are elected to roles in the Student Union and you could choose to run as Head Boy or Head Girl, become a Sixth Form House Leader or join a Student Union committee. Becoming a leader in your Student Union or participating in one of the many committees is a great way to contribute to sixth form life plus it will look good on your CV or UCAS application and your employability passport. There are also plenty of other ways for you to get involved with student life and play an important role in your House by supporting charity fundraising events. You might find yourself organising a bake sale for your house charity or collecting donations for Children in Need.

Improve your employability You will already know that in the sixth form you are not in lessons all day every day. We offer a huge range of activities that you can get involved in outside of lessons that are aimed at developing your employability skills. Being linked so closely to South Hunsley Secondary School presents lots of opportunities for you to help out teachers and younger students. In any course you study you can help Year 7 students in that subject, acting as a Teaching Assistant or general classroom support. Alternatively, you could choose to be a Student Ambassador and play an active role in promoting our sixth form, sharing your knowledge and experiences with school students at our Open Events as well as being an advocate for the sixth form at other important events. Either way, you are building up a great set of skills to add to your CV or UCAS application.

We employ over 70 sixth form students in various roles throughout the school and sports centre. You could become a Lunchtime Supervisor in the library and dining halls. If sports and fitness is more your thing then head over to South Hunsley Sports where you could gain extra qualifications and then find employment at the centre. Whichever job you choose it will provide you with work skills and experience which will stay with you beyond college and help boost any university or job application.

A big reason students choose South Hunsley is because of our university success rates and the awareness we have of what students need to make sure their applications stand out from the crowd.

Liam Hardy

Senior Engineer, Aston Martin The University of Huddersfield

“The Science department at South Hunsley led me to my current career. The lessons were excellent and I had relatable teachers that provided interactive and engaging lessons. Since leaving South Hunsley, my biggest successes have been academically graduating from medical school at Imperial College and non-academically qualifying for the GB age-group team for the upcoming ITU Triathlon World Championships. The sixth form supported these achievements by developing transferable skills including accountability, consistency and acknowledging/tackling weaknesses. Having worked for a few years on the Gold Coast, I’ll be returning to the UK later this year and applying for a surgical training post to commence in 2019.”

“My favourite subjects at A Level were Science, Art and Technology. I liked drawing and designing things, taking things apart to learn how they work and putting them back together again. I designed and manufactured a shock absorbing stem for my mountain bike at sixth form for my technology A Level, and this kick started my interest in engineering. I have had a successful career and am a named inventor on several patents. I was lucky enough to design part of the interior for the Aston Martin DB11, Vantage and DBS Superleggera. I am now the project manager for the interior of the Vanquish Zagato Shooting Brake.”

Victoria Shearer

Andy Dunn

LinkedIn Events and Workplace Coordinator

Creative Account Manager, Jaywing Sheffield Hallam University

“I have now worked at LinkedIn for four years, which has been a challenging and intense journey. I don’t think I would be here if I didn’t have the work ethic and dedication instilled in me at South Hunsley, as well as the supportive people in my life that I met there. Our form tutor, Mr Norton, pushed us hard and had high expectations of everyone in our group, which motivated us to achieve both as individuals and as a collective.

“I have a real passion to push brands as far as they can really go. In my career I’ve worked with really strong household names such as: Lego, Chester Zoo, Castrol, Center Parcs, Edinburgh Zoo, York Council (just to name a few).

We had the most encouraging and entertaining teacher for our Modern History class, whose great attitude to learning made the subject engaging. I’m still close friends with many of the people I met in Modern History, even 9 years after leaving school, which is quite the feat. I developed a love for Russian history as a result of this course and intend to visit Russia to learn more.”

Jenny Wood Corporate Tax Consultant, Deloitte University of Newcastle-upon-Tyne

South Hunsley Sixth Form gave me the tools needed to deliver what I’m currently doing, not just from an academic point of view but also from a social point of view. The sixth form and South Hunsley throughout gave me confidence to really push myself.”

“Economics was my favourite subject at sixth form because it relates to every aspect of our lives, which is fascinating. South Hunsley gave me a great start in my career through opportunities such as the Bank of England Target 2.0 competition. My biggest achievement since leaving sixth form is becoming a charted accountant and gaining a First Class degree in Economics. I think it’s important to study what you enjoy and not what you think you need to study as you will have much more determination to succeed.”
