e m o c l We We are delighted to share with you the successes of Year 11 and Sixth Form students this summer. It has been another challenging year for students and teachers across the country with final reforms to A levels completed as well as the newly introduced 9-1 grading at GCSE being applied to the majority of GCSE subjects. Students and staff have continued to meet these challenges with hard work, determination and commitment and, as a result, our students are once again celebrating some fantastic results at both GCSE and A level. Our Year 13 students performed exceptionally well, with a quarter of all grades at A* or A and just under half of all students achieving at least one A* or A grade. When looking at students’ results in terms of the progress they made from GCSE, our students, are once again in the top 10% of all sixth forms nationally. We are particularly proud of this as it reflects the hard work and excellent achievements of all students, regardless of their starting points. Our Year 11 students were the first to tackle a wider range of new GCSEs and their hard work and commitment was rewarded with outstanding results. 84% of students achieved 9-4 grades in Maths and English, with 65% achieving the higher threshold of 9-5.
Achievement of the very highest grades was exceptional with 6% of all grades awarded at grade 9 compared to 4% across the country. In addition, 19% of students gained 1 or more grade 9s with 12% achieving this top grade in Maths. Again, performance across a range of subjects was excellent and early indications are that progress for this cohort will be within the top 10% of schools nationally. We are very proud of all our students and everything they have achieved.

Once again we have been exceptionally pleased with the performance of our Sixth Form students. Last year’s results placed South Hunsley students in the top 10% of all post 16 providers nationally for the progress they made from their already very strong GCSE grades. We have once again achieved that status and with a slightly improved progress score. Students performed exceptionally well across the board with 13 students attaining all A*-A grades and 45% of students gaining at least one A*-A grade. 25% of all grades were at A*A and 71% of students achieved A*-B grades. Students performed particularly well in a number of subjects including Biology (42% A*A), Economics (29% A*-A) and English Literature (47% A*-A).

This was the second year of A Level reforms, with lots of our students taking papers in reformed subjects for the first time. Our applied academic courses also achieved large numbers of Distinction* and Distinction grades. As in most years the principal destination of our Year 13 leavers was Higher Education with over 80% of students applying through UCAS to continue their education to degree level and beyond. The strong results seen at A Level and equivalent has meant that over 86% of our university applicants were successful in gaining places on courses at their first choice university, including many on high tariff courses at highly competitive universities. This is an increase of 6% on the previous year. We also work hard to support our students who decide that university is not the route for them and we are really pleased with some of the impressive apprenticeships students have secured, both locally and nationally.

s t c e j d b n u e S p o t r e v i l de rmance o f r e p It is clear that the hours spent studying paid off for A Level students with almost half of those taking English Literature achieving an A or A*. The percentage of students receiving A*-C grades has also been extremely high, with 100% achieving a C or above in both English Literature and English Language.

I always to wanted to study History at a higher level but I really enjoyed English at A Level and realised that the two subjects complimented each other well. Sixth form helped to make us independent in our learning, not only in the classroom but also by encouraging us to complete work outside of school, which helped with revision closer to the time of exams.“

Amidst a really strong set of A Level results we saw some stand-out performances from a number of subject areas and what has also been particularly pleasing is that some of these subjects had high numbers of students taking them, meaning impressive outcomes for even more students. One of the largest of these successful cohorts was seen in Maths, with 38 students. Maths students put themselves in the top 25% nationally for the progress made from GCSE. 55% achieved A*-A grades, which is significantly higher than the national average and impressive progress scores means that nearly all students, regardless of ability, either met or exceeded their target grade. Students studying Science made exceptional progress and on average 40% of students in Biology, Chemistry and Physics achieved A*-A grades. The progress these students have made since GCSE is outstanding, with Biology and Chemistry in the top 10% and Physics in the top 25% nationally. Economics students found themselves in the top 10% nationally and scored a tremendous 29% A*-A grades. Excellent progress measures were also achieved by PE, Business Studies, Film Studies and Health & Social Care students. The quality of teaching and learning measurement used for sixth form colleges puts the performance of all of our students in the top 10% nationally and is a testament to all of the hard work put in by staff and students alike. With the majority of A Levels now

“
We are in the Top 10% of sixth forms nationally” Paul Jacobs, Director of Year 13, said: “It has been a turbulent 2 years in Sixth Form colleges, with countless changes adding to the usual pressures of preparing students for their final exams. Whilst we remained confident throughout that the expertise and dedication of our teaching staff, alongside the hard work and determination of our students would pay off, it is reassuring to see from these results that this was indeed the case. To achieve an outstanding progress score in the top 10% for the second year running is a remarkable achievement and one that we are all very proud of. More importantly, this has meant that the vast majority of our Year 13 leavers have achieved the grades they needed to access their destinations of choice.”

“I’m looking forward to studying Medicine at university. The build up to the exams was stressful, but I got a lot of support from my teachers, friends and parents which helped to keep me motivated. I took part in volunteering roles at South Hunsley and added these to my personal statement, which I think showed that I am more than an academic student. I also took part in the Employer Led Programme which gave me the opportunity to complete work experience at Hull Royal and see what working in a hospital is really like.“

“My ambition to attend the University of Cambridge began when I received my AS results. I realised that if I put in the work it could be possible to secure a place. I’ve always been interested in Law and completing an EPQ helped strengthen my reasons for taking the course. In year 12, I attended a trip to the university campus and we were given application advice. The teaching support has been fantastic. They helped me prepare for my interview, aim high and achieve my grades. I’m excited to explore Cambridge, meet new people and continue my studies.”
“I’m really happy with my results, as they mean that I have met my offer of A* A* A to study Computer Science at Cambridge. Studying Computer Science at A Level locked in my interest for the subject and that’s when I knew I wanted to study it further. A few people said I should think about applying for Oxbridge and after attending a school trip to Cambridge I decided that this is what I want to do. My teachers were really supportive with my application and the interviews were hard but I’m glad the hard work paid off and I’m now looking forward to starting the course.”

g n i d n a t s t u O s t l u s e R South Hunsley students are once again celebrating a superb set of GCSE results across the board, with particularly impressive results in Maths and English GCSEs. 84% of students achieved the key 9-4 measure in English and Maths which is broadly similar to the old A*-C measure. This is an outstanding achievement and continues the trend of really high performance by South Hunsley students. For the “strong” pass – grades 5 and above – 65% of students reached this threshold, which is comparable with the very highest performing schools in the country. This year was only the second of the new grade 9 at GCSE, which is designed to identify the very highest achievement. Over 6% of grades were grade 9 compared to 4% nationally and an extraordinary 12% of students achieved the grade 9 in Maths. Richard Williman, Head of School, said “We are delighted that in a year, that has once again seen significant uncertainty, as the majority of subjects move to the new 9-1 grading, our students have again performed so well. Once again, our students continue to outperform similar students nationally by making exceptional progress across all their subjects. We are immensely proud of their achievements and our congratulations go to all our students. These impressive results are a reflection of the hard work that students and staff have put in during their time at South Hunsley along with the fantastic support given by parents/carers and governors.“

e c n a m r o f r s t e c p e j h b u s Hig l l a s s o r c a Over the last three years, students have worked exceptionally hard and have been supported by their highly committed and professional teachers. When the results came in it was clear that this hard work had been rewarded and our students had truly excelled. In Maths, 87% of students achieved the “standard” pass at grades 9-4 and 72% achieved the “strong” pass at grades 9-5. Across both English subjects, students performed exceptionally well, with 90% achieving the “standard” pass and 79% achieving the “strong” pass. These results have placed our students amongst some of the highest performing in the country. Matt Holmes, Director of Maths, said: “Results this year are once again outstanding and I was delighted to see so many happy faces on results day. The students have shown a real dedication to completing their weekly past papers from the first week in September and throughout the rest of Year 11. They have also consistently attended all of the extra support sessions we have offered. This year’s fantastic results show the great rewards that come from hard work and effort which both students and staff have put into preparing for the exams.” Debbie Bonner, Director of English, said: “We are thrilled with the attainment and progress in English this year and another set of excellent results. The team have worked tirelessly, providing lots of support and guidance to the students which they really appreciated. I am delighted with the results and proud of everyone involved. ”

Our Science department has had another incredibly successful year at GCSE. The percentage of students receiving 9-4 grades has been extremely high – Biology leading the way at 100% with Physics and Chemistry closely following with 98%. Abbey Preece, Director or Science said “The staff and students have worked together to tackle the new, more challenging science GCSE courses. The results they have achieved show just how hard they have worked.” “We are particularly pleased that so many of our pupils on the trilogy GCSE pathway (79%) achieved a grade 4 or higher, compared to around 48% of students nationally. 15% of our pupils following the separate science pathway achieved a grade 9 (with 7% achieving a grade 9 in all 3 sciences) and approximately 50% of pupils following the separate science pathway achieved grades 7 or higher (the old A*-A measure). I am delighted that our pupils have achieved the results that they deserved.” Our PE department also had a successful year at GCSE as 32% of students received 9-7 grades and 71% achieved 9-5 grades. We don’t have space to detail all of our subject’s achievements, but there are a few that are definitely worth a mention. In Art, 91% of students achieved a 9-4 grade and 85% of students receiving an 9-4 grade in German. Our progress measures are yet to be confirmed by the Department of Education but early indicators suggest that the school will once again be in the top 10% of schools nationally. Our Year 11 students of 2018 truly deserved these outstanding results, their dedication and hard work has certainly paid off. We are very proud of you all and wish all our Year 11s every success for their future.
