wELCOMING & EDUCATING
“I came to South Kent with some personal goals and interests. I feel that many of those goals have been met because my teachers took an interest in me. They supported my dream of becoming a photographer, and I will be following that dream in college next fall.” —Qixiang Zhejiang, China
and educating international students,
its first Asian student graduating in the 1950s. The School’s extensive experience with the international community and its supportive educational program have blended perfectly to provide positive learning results for students for whom English is not their native language. South Kent has been committed to a significant English as a Second Language program for decades. These language classes for international students are smoothly integrated into the School’s academic curriculum throughout the year. We have educated young people from all over the world— from Europe, Africa, Asia, South America, the Middle East. These students form part of our healthy and diverse student body by living,
working, and playing with young people from all parts of the
United States as well as other countries.

our experience with international students during the regular school year has led naturally to a SoUThKEnTSchooL.org
summer program specifically for international students including those who wish to improve their
English language skills before joining the South Kent School community for the school year, those current South Kent students who need to polish their English skills for the school years that follow, and those students who wish to strengthen their English language skills for study at another school either in the United States or in their own countries. Just as important, the summer boarding school experience has helped all these students adjust
to living away from home before the all-important move to
university. South Kent has demonstrated success in all of these situations.
“I think that South Kent’s summer program really helped prepare me for my fall semester. I was able to adjust to a new environment, and I was ready for my classes when school began.” —Hyun Jin Yongin-si, Korea

LANGUAGE & LIvING In its 5-week Summer Enrichment Program, South Kent accepts up to 30 students for an intense study of the English language. The enrollment number is kept small so that each student can receive a good deal of personal
attention. The ratio of teacher to student is set at 1 to 5. Instructors have years of
teaching experience in language skills and are both enthusiastic and warmly supportive in their work with the students. English
is the only language which is spoken during the school day;
written work and classroom oral presentation are in English. Students are placed in basic, intermediate or advanced levels of instruction according to their entering language proficiency.

The English Language Learning classes focus on speaking and writing the language clearly, at length, and
proofreading skills, vocabulary building, and familiarity with idiomatic phrases. Students do role-playing, learn to interpret body-language cues, complete writing projects, and deliver oral reports. Particular attention is paid to preparation for taking the ToEFL and SAT tests. The many resources available to the students include the rosetta Stone English Program. South Kent’s 5-week course of study begins and ends with assessment using the Secondary Level English Proficiency (SLEP) Test. In addition to their study of the English language, students may select courses in mathematics, social studies or art. During the summer program, academic classes fill the morning hours. Schoolrooms and dormitories offer wireless access to the internet; classrooms are equipped with the latest technology including SMArT Boards and projectors. The afternoons and evenings are devoted to sports, games, hikes, movies, and in-house entertainment such as karaoke and open-mic performances. The South Kent campus includes a first-class gymnasium with basketball court and an extensive weight room, a swimming pool, tennis courts, and multiple athletic fields. The library provides a place for quiet study, and art studios allow the opportunity for independent, creative pursuits.
“For the first time in my life I have been able to learn ‘my own way.’ South Kent’s teachers expect me to express what I am thinking and not just repeat the facts that are in my books.” —Weijia Guangzhou, China

South Kent School is ideally situated for cultural
exposure to small-town life in the United States
as well as to the urban landscape. The school campus nestles amid rural new England hills and farms; it is surrounded by fields, woods, streams, and ponds. The town of Kent has small shops, restaurants, and art galleries. A very large, nearby shopping mall offers endless shopping opportunities. Each weekend of the program, the students travel to cities to experience urban life. In new York, Boston, Philadelphia or Washington D.c., they visit museums, attend theater productions, and visit
historical sites such as
the Statue of Liberty, the United nations, constitution hall, the Lincoln Memorial, and the Washington Monument. Many students have enjoyed trips to university campuses including columbia, harvard, MIT, and georgetown. Excursions away from campus may also include day trips to amusement parks, zoos, aquariums or nearby state parks.

The best classrooms in the United States, both at the high school and university levels, are places of
expression of respectful debate
and question-and-answer is found in the classrooms at South Kent, both during the school year and the summer program. Students gain confidence in their own voices and opinions; they learn to express themselves simply and clearly by exploring ideas verbally with others. Using their constantly improving English language skills, our students broaden their minds—culturally, socially, and intellectually. South Kent’s philosophy
of rigorous yet warm and supportive instruction offers the
ideal atmosphere for such learning. In addition, its 350-acre campus in the beautiful Litchfield hills of connecticut provides a comfortable and safe home for its family of students.
