Grand SLAM! We’ve got a Grand SLAM (Southlake Arts Magazine) issue for you this month starting with the Rangers! It’s great to root for the home team, or in this case Lamberto Alvarez, who created a beautiful ‘Rangers’ series of monumental moments that blends realism and impressionism. Kids are a big hit this month as well, with the highlights at Art In The Square and the wonderful multimedia pieces created by students at the Clariden School. Summer will be here before you know it. Have you registered your kids for Summer Camps yet? Our Summer Camp section has some of the best camps handpicked for you to enroll in!
April is a month of a lot of great festivals, starting with Dallas International Film Festival April 3rd -13th. We hand picked films that you are sure to enjoy (DIFF is showing 139 films this year). The Dallas Art Fair (April 10th - 13th) is bringing art from renowned galleries across the globe, and our very own Art In The Square will be held April 25th - 27th. It is my personal opinion that this year’s Art in The Square will have the best and most original music yet. We have The Cadillac Three headlining, Kaela Sinclair, Jessie Frye and The Robotix performing; it is not to be missed! The complete calendar can be found on page 15. Tear it out and bring it with you when you go to AITS. Also not to be missed is our party ‘The Happening’ Thursday, April 17th at Apeizza! Frozen roads and sub-zero temperatures did not dissuade Southlake’s cinema-loving jet set from enjoying Muller Film & Television Education Foundation’s Oscar Watch Party at Patrizio Osteria. Presented by Park Place Dealerships and Pieter Andries Fine Jewelers, this black tie celebration brought the glitz and glamour of Hollywood to North Texas. A highlight of the evening was provided by famed singer-composer Sir Earl Toon, of the renowned Kool & the Gang, who rocked the house with a live performance of Celebration! Proceeds from the event benefited the foundation’s outreach activities in North Texas, which include youth workshops, a movie club for seniors and the upcoming 2015 Southlake Film Festival. Southlake-based Boom Tube TV, and its Chief News Correspondent, Jane McGarry, added flare and finesse on the red carpet.

ART IN THE SQUARE MUSIC COME FOR THE ART, BUT LOSE YOURSELF IN THE MUSIC. This year’s Art in the Square headliners promise to be better than ever. Plan to stay awhile, because Saturday afternoon features two local ladies who are getting lots of attention and well-deserved critical acclaim. THE CADILLAC THREE Grab some dinner and secure your spot early as The Cadillac Three takes the stage at 8:30 on Saturday. This band of native Nashvillians Jaren Johnston, Neil Mason and Kelby Ray have been friends and musical co-conspirators since they were kids. They’ve celebrated major triumphs, weathered major label letdowns, and conquered Music Row – Johnston co-wrote Keith Urban’s #1 single “You Gonna Fly.” But in spite of all the trials and tribulations – or perhaps because of them – The Cadillac Three have emerged with a sound all of their own; a sound that hovers between radio-ready country anthems, hard-andheavy rock and traditional Southern folk. You could call it country fuzz, you could call it hipster-billy, you could call it any number of overhyphenated, adjective-strewn things, but when you boil it all down there’s only one way to describe it: damn good music, as pure and refreshing as a country creek. Comprised of singer-guitarist Jaren Johnston, lap steel player Kelby Ray and drummer Neil Mason, The Cadillac Three was a lucky accident. The trio had finished recording their debut album and didn’t have a bass player. They were about to have their first show ever, opening up for ZZ Top and had to figure out a way to make the sound work with just the three of them. These days you’ll hear their music on TV shows including Nashville, Vampire Diaries, Hart of Dixie, and CSI Miami. The Cadillac Three have opened shows for Dierks Bentley, Eric Church, Lynyrd Skynyrd and ZZ Top.

At 3:00, 23-year-old standout Kaela Sinclair hits the stage, fresh from the release of her debut album, Sun & Mirror, named Best Local Album of 2013 by the Ft. Worth Star-Telegram and DFW.com.
Plan to stay put, because up at 4:30 is local Jessie Frye, who is garnering national buzz for good reason. According to The Wall Street Journal, Jessie has “...a robust, versatile voice that she showcases with a wide-ranging pop sensibility.” And The New York Times says Jessie, “confidently holds her own against distorted guitars and a thunderous beat” and named her as one of the top 10 DFW musicians to watch at last month’s SXSW.
“There’s no doubt about it - one of the most striking new talents I’ve heard thus far this year is Denton singer-songwriter Kaela Sinclair. Sun & Mirror is a lush, richly textured piece of work brimming with ambition and suffused with a dark beauty. In short, one of the best albums to emerge from the DFW area thus far in 2013.” - DFW.com (Sep 24, 2013) The album, recorded at Redwood Studios in Denton, TX, features an all-star team of musicians including: Buffi Jacobs (Polyphonic Spree), Daniel Hart (Broken Social Scene, St. Vincent, Dark Rooms), Fiona Brice (Placebo, Kanye West), Joey McClellan (Midlake, The Fieros), Evan Jacobs (Polyphonic Spree, Tack The Boy Disaster, Midlake) and Jesse Chandler (Midlake). Sinclair was named one of the Dallas Observer’s 12 North Texas Artists to Watch in 2014. Central Track named “Original Sin” as one of their Top 50 Songs of 2013, and Coral Castles was #3 on the Top 40 Songs of 2013 list by blogger Ghost of Blind Lemon.
Jessie is no stranger to the stage, having played SXSW for several years, House of Blues, The Mohawk, Stubbs, Kessler Theatre, Dan’s Silverleaf, Thin Line Film Fest and 35 Denton and supported artists such as Pat Benatar, Eric Hutchinson, Dana Falconberry, Katie Herzig, Anais Mitchell, Joan As Police Woman and more. In February, Jessie and her band released their album, Obsidian. Joshua Pickard of Beats Per Minute says of lead track White Heat, “Veering between smoky torch song tendencies and synth-pop theatrics, the track showcases the ways in which Frye is able to shape her voice in memorable ways, while still allowing the ever spiraling rhythms and dense instrumentation to sit front and center...A compelling example of how synth-pop can expand and develop past its bloated mainstream inclinations, White Heat is equal parts inclusive campfire storytelling and rafter-reaching pomp. ART IN THE SQUARE MUSIC THE ROBOTIX Last, but not least, come back Sunday at 1:30 to cheer on hometown phenoms, THE ROBOTIX, as they rock Southlake with their largest concert since wowing over 15 million viewers on America’s Got Talent. The band includes 10-year-old drummer extraordinaire Logan “Robot” Gladden; 12-year-old charismatic singing sensation Angelina Baez from Los Angeles, CA; 13-year-old spirited blues guitarist Brendan James; 14-year-old Japanese guitar prodigy Yuto Miyazawa, who has toured with Ozzy Osbourne and is listed in the Guinness Book of World Records as the Youngest Professional Guitar Player in the World; 15-year-old rock solid lefty bassist Jared Devino; and 16-yearold Dallas guitar phenom Jon Casel, who also serves as the band’s music director. Collectively, the kids have performed live in front of thousands, amassed millions of YouTube views, and been featured on television shows and news programs worldwide (Ellen, Conan, Barney & Friends, and even a nationwide promotional campaign for Chuck E. Cheese restaurants). Now united and hoping to take the entertainment world by storm, the band is on a self-proclaimed mission to help preserve rock and roll for future generations – one kid at a time. Rock on.

Robot Gladden DRUMMER

Robot Gladden (10 years old) is up and coming and has been since he started playing drums at 18 months old. In addition to playing the drums (he is signed with Pearl drums), he also sings and plays the piano with the neo-classic kid rock band The Robotix. The Robotix recorded their debut record ‘Rock & Roll’ (You’ve bought it on iTunes already, right?) then performed at Radio City Music Hall in front of 12 million people on the show ‘America’s Got Talent’. Following the show, they played a sold-out gig at the legendary Whisky A Go Go in Los Angeles. Recently, Robot has been practicing, rehearsing and writing with his band and plans to record and tour. Be sure to catch Robot performing with The Robotix Sunday, April 27th at 1:30 p.m. at Art in the Square!
10 QUESTIONS FOR ROBOT Who is your favorite drummer? John Bonham. Howard Stern told me “You pound the drums like a little John Bonham”. What do you love about music? I love how much it has changed in such a short time. If you listen to what was happening in the 60s and put on the radio now, it’s so different! Where are you happiest? Behind the drumkit.

Who is your inspiration? John Bonham (musically). What is your most treasured possession? My Paul McCartney signed records or my first toy drumset. What is your idea of a perfect food? Hot dogs from New York! If you could have a meal with anyone, whom would it be with?

DAVID HALL: You’ve done a Rangers series. What was your why? Why the Rangers? LAMBERTO: Well, to be quite honest, it really started out of inspiration beginning in 2010. My wife has been a really avid baseball fan, and, you know, of course, I’ve watched baseball all my life. But it wasn’t until 2010 that I really started to see what was going on behind the scenes in the dugout. I was watching other games with other teams, but when I watched the Rangers under Ron Washington, there was something that I saw that was going on that was different. There was magic, magic in the dugout. There was this camaraderie that you felt; These guys are good friends, grown-up kids doing the thing that they love and really caring about the game, which I connect with because I’m blessed that I, myself, get to do what I love to do. When I started watching that, I knew that the person responsible for that dynamic was Ron Washington.

WE SAT DOWN WITH LAMBERTO ALVAREZ TO DISCUSS THE NEW RANGERS SERIES that he has been developing since 2010. Lamberto has created a moving blend of realism and impressionism of special events in recent Rangers history. This is unique in and of itself because typically working artists are commissioned to do work and follow their clients needs and desires. In this case, Lamberto was given free artistic control over the paintings and was able to choose events that move him.

I know that his Rangers art is truly a passion for him and his wife, as they are great fans of the team. DH: You’ve done a few portraits of Ron Washington, correct? LAMBERTO: Of course! The very first painting I did of the Rangers was when they won the pennant in 2010. What happened was everyone got in the locker room and, when they won, everyone opened up bottles of Champagne and Cruz happened to be there ready for the interview. But, by that time, he had already put on goggles and a plastic shower cap! He was ready for the champagne. And, when I saw that, I said, “I’ve got to capture this moment.” After that, I didn’t do it for any other purpose other than I loved those moments. DH: Were these guys heroes to you? LAMBERTO: Now, keep in mind, for years I’ve been honoring heroes for the kids. I really feel that those growing up need to have good role models to look up to. Those people that inspire kids to action and to chase their dreams are really important. So, to me, the Rangers are heroes! They love what they
are doing, they’re having a blast, and I had to paint those moments. DH: How many pieces have you painted? LAMBERTO: Right now I have a total of about 20 pieces. DH: How large are the paintings? LAMBERTO: They vary in size, from 3’x3’ to the largest which is 5’x9’. DH: What was the process for the painting? How long would it take you to finish one? LAMBERTO: Well, that’s a tough question to answer. I liked to work on two to three pieces at a time. Stay up all night working on it sometimes until the sun rises. I’d spend a little time here and a little time there. I was able to work at my own pace because these paintings weren’t commissioned. Most began with sketches, then I’d change them around so that it wouldn’t just look like a photograph. DH: I love how you draw the audience. It’s impressionistic. LAMBERTO: My work is a mixture of styles. A blend of realism and impressionism.

I don’t want it to look too real because why? We have photographs. I try to paint how you see things in your imagination. Colors and tones, passion and emotions. To me, that is the thing. I used to paint very tight and real, but now that’s behind me, that was my college days. I come from the days when I’d do airbrush. But, now that I’m doing my fine art, I’m pushing it to be more impressionistic instead of solid realism. Why do realism when you can take a photograph? DH: That’s a valid point! So you made these for your own self-expression? LAMBERTO: I really did. It was with no monetary intentions. DH: So you didn’t have anyone tell you, do this moment, make my face look this way, use more of that? This is your vision and expression. LAMBERTO: This work is really personal for me. It’s not rare that I do something like this. When I met with Ron Washington, he made me realize that there is something more to the paintings that people need to see. He said, “Gosh, Lamberto, this needs to be seen by the
fans, seen by all the people in the world. Why are you just keeping it at home?” So, we are going to tour the body of work. DH: Out of these pieces, which is your favorite? LAMBERTO: I think the one that speaks to me is the double play of Elvis throwing to Moreland. A moment that happened so quickly, Elvis tagged him out, jumped, spread his legs and threw at the same time! It seemed superhuman! Double play! DH: So, each of these paintings has a story? LAMBERTO: Absolutely, and that is what you are going to see at the shows! DH: When is the next one? LAMBERTO: July 7th-31st in Keller Town Hall. We’ll have a Opening Reception party July 16th, 2014 - the day after the All-Star Game!

A
lthough the students have not visited New York’s Modern Museum of Art to view Van Gogh’s Starry Night, a few of them were studying the famous painter in Mrs. Nathani’s Lower Elementary classroom. That report was the catalyst that sparked their imagination and inspired the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd grade students at The Clariden School of Southlake to create a masterpiece which recently sold at their annual school auction for more than $5,000. This
intriguing piece was made simply with crayons. “We were inspired to create the piece by several things. A few students were working on a report, and we saw something similar to Van Gogh’s Starry Night. This piece is our own interpretation of Van Gogh’s painting. It isn’t exactly the same. The colors and the movement are different from the original,” said Shagufta Nathani, Lead Teacher for the Lower Elementary class. southlake ARTS

She added with a smile, “Our students donated the crayons, so we have crayons from all over. The students peeled each crayon and snapped them into various sizes.“ After all the materials were collected, the students glued each piece onto a sketch their teacher helped them draw. It took several different attempts to find glue that would hold the crayons in place. For two months, students peeled, snapped and glued. When asked about their favorite part of the project, most students eagerly replied “snapping” or “peeling”! There is a technique they mastered to cut a slit in the paper and then peel it away from the crayon. Often during reading time in the afternoon, you could find students sitting quietly and listening to stories read by Pam Hitch, Lower Elementary Assistant, while they peeled and snapped crayons. The end result was a beautiful piece of art created by an energetic and bubbly classroom of students. “It is so colorful,” said one of the

first grade students. The class giggled when one of the boys added “I thought it was amazing but I thought it would NEVER get finished.” When you see the piece and try to guess how many crayons were used, it is easy to understand his declaration. Student artwork is a staple in the Art Show and Auction that takes place each year at The Clariden School. Students as young as three years of age through high school attend the small private school tucked into the suburbs of Southlake, TX. Younger students attend Montessori classes while older students attend hands-on projectbased learning classes. The curriculum stresses the importance of academic, exploratory and artistic development. Every student had a piece of art showcased and each classroom donated one or two pieces for the auction. More than ninety guests enjoyed food, drinks and live music by Kaela Sinclair, a local up-andcoming artist, while they browsed through 100 different pieces of art at the show on March 1, 2014.
The Upper Elementary class created a self-portrait piece reminiscent of Andy Warhol’s art. Other pieces included a découpage tableand-chair set, a Dallas skyline created with a replicated historical newspaper the students purchased during a field trip to the JFK Museum in Dallas, triptych silhouettes and a collage made of popsicle sticks by the youngest students in the school. Each age group was represented at the show. Pieter Andries Creators of Fine Jewelry, in Southlake, donated a beautiful pendant necklace for auction. The bidding became animated and competitive while the necklace was on the auction block. “We have been donating to the school auction for years.” said Pieter Hye, owner of Pieter Andries. “We love to help the school,” he added smiling. The evening was a success. Many parents proudly stood beside their children’s art and the pieces the classrooms created. It was a night to celebrate the stars - the student artists. southlake ARTS

Alice in Wonderland Avant Chamber Ballet presents a completely new production of the family classic! For the first time ACB is producing a completely new full-length story ballet - Alice in Wonderland at Eisemann Center April 12th and 13th! Disney’s Beauty and the Beast is on tour and hits the Winspear Opera House in Dallas April 15th through 27th, 2014. This Tony Award-winning musical follows the fortunes of Belle, a smart, beautiful young woman living in a quiet village in France, who is pursued by Gaston, the not-so-sharp local heart-throb. Her visit to the local castle takes her on a whole new adventure when she comes face-to-face with The Beast and must decide whether to look beyond his outward appearance or to shun and despise him as the villagers have done. Beauty and the Beast has been an international sensation since it opened on Broadway and remains as fresh today as when it first appeared. ummer is one of the best times of the year for your kids to immerse themselves in the arts. Camps offer a great opportunity for your kids to not only spend a great deal of time learning, but often times the friendships that they make at camp will last them a lifetime. AITS helps artist, young and old, to grow and be recognized.
The Emerging Artist Program, run and paid for by APEX Arts League, is designed specifically for up and coming Dallas/Fort Worth area artists. Those who qualify have exhibited their art in 2 or less juried art festivals. This program gives local artists, new to juried art shows, the option to apply without a booth shot, the opportunity to show their art at a reduced fee, tents are provided, and artists receive professional mentoring. Student Art usually receives approximately 300 entries from NE Tarrant County high school students (public, private, and homeschooled). The Southlake Women’s Club committee narrows down the finalists to about 100 that will actually be displayed at the festival. Judges (members of the local art community and SWC members) will determine the grand prize winner as well as the top prizes and honorable mentions. Art will be displayed near the Gazebo stage. This year, the Grand Prize will be the “Lone Star Artist Award”. This talented artist will have their artwork displayed in the rotunda of the Texas Capitol this summer. They will receive 2 nights hotel accommodations in Austin courtesy of Kids Matter International and a VIP tour of the Capitol, courtesy of State Representative Giovanni Capriglione. In addition, there is over $500 worth of cash prizes (donated by Roxanne Taylor) to be awarded to other top placing artists.

Young Dragon artists are featured during Art in the Square as well! The annual Carroll ISD K-12 Art Show showcases student art that will be on displayed on the first, second and third floors of Town Hall. The artwork will feature various mediums from all Carroll ISD campuses. Carroll ISD art teachers, Emily Trammel and Monica LaPierre, hope that by coordinating the K-12 Art Show with Art in the Square, visitors will take the time to visit the student works inside Town Hall.

DESTINATIONS
“I had seen it in movies and other photographs, but nothing prepared me for emerging from the train station on a sunny day with the grand canal, boats of various shapes and sizes, and churches and monumental buildings before me. It was glorious. There were a few iconic photos that I wanted to find and take, but the joy I found in Venice was just walking the canals, crossing the narrow bridges, and looking at the crumbling buildings, artisans’ shops, and ancient palaces. I didn’t always know what would be around the next corner, a gondola resting in the shadows, a gondolier on rest break, a church dome in late afternoon light, or reflections in flooded St. Mark’s square. But as we learned the city, we would try to time our walks and destinations to coincide with good or better light. or the 2014 Dallas International Film Festival, more than 172 features, documentaries, shorts and student films representing 27 countries make DIFF truly an international festival. Of the feature films at the festival, 11 will see their world premieres and three are North American premieres, and all represent some of the best in the art of filmmaking. These films were selected from more than 1,300 submissions from around the world. Beginning on April 3rd at the Dallas City Performance Hall, the festival has screenings at the Angelika, Klyde Warren Park, Texas Theater, DMA, The
THE STARCK CLUB
Texas Theater // April 12th 7:30pm The Starck Club was a seminal, forward-thinking Dallas nightclub that embodied the overindulgent and glamorous 1980s. Creators Blake Woodall and Philippe Starck had great visions for the club, yet no one could foresee the impact it would have on world culture, most notably today’s billion dollar EDM industry. With interviews from icons and club attendees, including Larry Hagman, Owen Wilson and Paul Oakenfold, this documentary shows why Starck was much more than just a club.

Washington students Wednesday the 9th at 7 p.m. The showing will present shorts from 15 different students. As you watch it, you may wonder how many talented young film-makers might be in our community. Perhaps we can hope to see some young film-maker’s vision come to life next year with the Film Festival for Southlake that Muller Entertainment is preparing for. Ever since his father committed suicide, Lester has lived alone in the wilderness, keeping himself company with his own muttering by day and creeping outside lovers’ parked cars like a veritable boogeyman at night. When he happens upon the already-dead bodies of a young couple, Lester takes home his own trophy wife of sorts, hoisting her into his shack like some macabre wedding ritual. Soon Lester’s lust for fresh flesh grows, forcing local officer Deputy Cotton (Jim Parrack) into action.

But what these romanticized Jane Austin and BrontĂŤ sisters adaptations often overlook is the reality of life for those outside the gilded bubble. The fact is, life in 18th-century England was so wonderful for the wealthy in part because their economy depended on the brutality of the slave trade.In Belle, director Amma Asante offers a stirring twist on the classic period drama romance, and the result is both charming and thought provoking.

A Classic Belgian-style Abbey Dubbel Brewery Ommegang is a Belgian brewery located near Cooperstown, New York that specializes in Belgian-style ales. This ale is a deep burgundy color with a big, fluffy head, amber in color, is slightly hoppy, has an ABV 8.5%, complex fruit aromas with a layered sweetness (honey, then caramel, then toffee) and a hint of licorice and chocolate - a big, rich, abbey-style ale that dries out nicely on the finish. This Dubbel-style beer is best paired with chocolate and beef and also goes great with buttery-style cheeses such as Brie, Gouda, Havarti and Swiss and pungent-style cheeses such as Gorgonzola and Limburger. Just do a quick Google search and you will see that this is a very divisive question. Pick wines that have softer tannins and more fruit from areas like Columbia Valley, Washington or the Stag’s Leap District in Napa Valley, and you will most likely be pleased. Here is what I would pair...
2010 Powers Merlot, Columbia Valley $14.99/btl. Bill Powers is one of Washington’s most pioneering winemakers and has been growing some of the State’s finest grapes for 30 years. This juicy, plump red wine has masses of dark fruit, blackberries and plums, overlaid with creamy chocolate, caramel and cedar from 18-month aging in French oak barrels. Chocolate: Just about any semi-sweet chocolate. The soft tannins and abundance of fruit should make for a rather pleasurable experience.
