Last month, on the 14th of May, our readers gathered at our “Fête Française” held at the Main Street Bistro & Boulangerie - a gem of culinary delight on Main Street Grapevine that whisks you away to a reverie of a genuine Paris bistro. The weather was beautiful and discussed, hors d’oeuvre were plentiful and devoured, wine was poured and consumed. Ginny Mac played her Scandalli Accordian, sang like Edith Piaf and was accompanied by her brother in a Django’esque fashion. Guests took the time to visit and appreciate what our city’s creative minds our doing, dinner was unique and delicious, dessert was divine and finished off with a café!

Jazz Band Plays Duke Ellington & Wins! Some people “Don’t Get Around Much Anymore” but not Southlake’s high school Jazz Band. David Lown and Carroll High School’s Jazz Band along with Dr. Faltys and Principal Shawn Duhon made a “Caravan” up to NYC this past month, taking the “A Train” with stops at the famous jazz club Village Vanguard and a final destination of Lincoln Center to participate in the Essentially Ellington competition. This was Carroll’s third trip to the competition. Out of over 2700 schools who are members of the program, 94 schools submitted audition recordings and only 15 were selected to go to the finals. Selection was done by blind auditions where the bands finally would have their moment performing three songs by the great Duke Ellington. While in NYC, the students were able to see a performance by Brad Mehldau, had Q&A with Wynton Marsalis and have jam sessions with students from other schools. The students brought home the awards for Outstanding Brass and Outstanding Vocals (performed by Chris Weisberg). The band performed Perdido (arr. Gerald Wilson), Sophisticated Lady (Duke Ellington), and Every Day (I Have the Blues) (Ernie Wilkins).

AN ARTIST’S PERSPECTIVE
Art in The Square was wonderful this year. I had my own personal favorites such as Erin Hanson, Speaking Rock Jewelry, Gregory Arth, Yoram Gal and, of course, Trish Biddle. But I was curious. What would be the favorite of professional artist Deanna Kienast? Lucky for us, she was able to take a break from making her Texas-sized abstracts to go to each and every booth! This is what she said. “The colors and vivid energy of “Art in the Square” never cease to amaze me! It just puts a smile your face! For me, hands down, Andrew Otis pottery was a show topper! This year, I was especially drawn to the tall clay cylinder jars/sculptures created by

potter Andrew Otis. His ability to throw 25-30 pound clay sections and then seam them together with such precision is an amazing achievement! It is rare to not have uneven seams or separation of any kind after the glazing and firing process! Andrew also displayed great coordination of scale to his design proportions making each piece unique! Love the scale! Love the eclectic surface designs! Love his bold transition from primitive to refined surface treatment! Love his originality! www.andrewotispottery.com southlake ARTS

IF YOU ARE STUDYING DANCE, YOU SHOULD KNOW BRUCE WOOD. If you are a parent of a dancer, you should know Bruce Wood. If you are on drill team, whether an Emerald Belle, Indianette or Fabulous Fillie, you should know Bruce Wood. If you fancy yourself a person of culture, if renaissance means anything to you, you should know Bruce Wood.
Bruce Wood is a prolific, nationally acclaimed choreographer of more than 80 original works. His professional journey began at the Gayle Corkery School of Ballet in Fort Worth while he was attending high school in North Richland Hills. At the age of sixteen, he received a scholarship to the summer intensive at the School of American Ballet under the direction of George Balanchine in New York city. Then, over a 15-year period, Wood performed with New York City Ballet, San Francisco Ballet; Les Ballets Jazz de Montréal; and the Lar Lubovitch Dance Company. In the late 90s, he returned home to Fort Worth and formed the Bruce Wood Dance Company (BWDC). He was its sole choreographer and artistic director for ten years, and the company went on three national tours, which were received with glowing regional and national acclaim for their original choreography and outstanding performers.
The economy of crisis of the late 2000s made a temporary casualty of BWDC and it temporarily folded. BWDC had made such an impact on dance culture and the performances had moved a group of dance patrons so strongly that the company had to survive. And so, in 2010, the Bruce Wood Dance Project (BWDP) was formed, dedicated to the purpose of creating new works and invigorating the growth of professional dance in Dallas/Fort Worth. June 12-13th BWDP presents TOUCH - a compelling evening of new work and outstanding Wood revivals. TOUCH delves into the emotional undertones of tactility: Touch communicates soundlessly. Touch connects-whether it’s a soothing caress, a comforting hug, a squeeze of hands, or reaching out to another. Every contact is the beginning of a journey. “We sing out our southlake ARTS

hearts through touch with another. We cry our stories through the touch of the floor against the bend of gravity. We raise our souls by the lift of another who takes our weight and presses us to God. Touch is the beginning and the end,“ explains Wood.
“I believe that people will forget what you said, they will forget what you wrote; they will even forget what you did. But, people will never forget how you made them feel. I remember this every time I make a dance, and it is probably the one thing that governs all the choices I make.” - Bruce Wood

As part of the performance, Wood revives one of his best dances, Home, set to one of his favorite scores - Gabriel Fauré’s Requiem. This haunting work epitomizes his “less is more” aesthetic style. Wood created this work in 1997 and its themes about the place of home are still socially relevant today.

ummer is one of the best times of the year for your kids to immerse themselves in the arts. Camps offer a great opportunity for your kids to not only spend a great deal of time learning, but often times the friendships that they make at camp will last them a lifetime. Sometimes seeing someone the same age as you that is ahead of you can be a great motivator. That certainly happened to me at the UNT jazz camp when my classmates were Norah Jones, Robert Glasper, Mike Moreno, and McKenzie Smith. Here are some camps that we suggest for your student.

FILM
W
e were on Commerce Street on a weekday at the offices of Muller Entertainment in Southlake. Under Muller Entertainment’s watch, DFW had a legitimate film industry operation involving major Hollywood studios such as CBS and 20th Century Fox, most of whom utilized the stages and sets at The Studios at Las Colinas. Posters of films and shows made at The Studios at Las Colinas were on the walls - Oliver Stone’s JFK; Silkwood with Meryl Streep; Robocop; Dallas; Walker, Texas Ranger and Prison Break were just a few of the hits to come out of The Studios. There was even a life-sized cutout of an all-toofamiliar purple dinosaur character that made us all sing “I Love You, You Love Me, We’re a Happy Family!”...Barney. Just this past year, Muller Entertainment sold The Studios at Las Colinas to 20th Century Fox and Glenn Beck. Beck needed fulltime production studios for his conservative television and radio shows and Las Colinas was a perfect fit. So, they sold it to him, and now, Justin Muller has set his sights on the future. A film festival. In Southlake. Park City, Utah has America’s premier festival (Sundance), and it is a 37-minute drive from the regional airport. From Southlake, we have a 5-minute drive to an international airport. Much like Art in the square, the selection process would be lengthy; hundreds of filmmakers would have submitted their
SUNDANCE FILM FESTIVAL FOUNDED: 1978 CITY: PARK CITY, UT POPULATION: 7,873 ATTRACTIONS: SKIING, DINING FOUNDER: ROBERT REDFORD
films to participate, only a handful would be selected from different genres; big studio films, indie films, animation shorts, documentaries, kids films, Spanish Films, Foreign Films. The producers, directors and stars would fly into DFW International Airport from places such as Los Angeles, New York City, London, Paris, Australia, New Zealand, Japan. The Hilton would be packed and overflow would go to Solana, with overflow from Solana most likely going to the Gaylord. Photographers would line up at the red carpet in front of Harkins Theater. The media would all be there and Paparazzi iPhonographers would take photos (and selfies) at the red carpet as the film industry converged on Harkins in Southlake Town Square in their stretched limousines and luxury sedans. People would flock at the opportunity to see the newest and freshest films our world’s creative minds have to offer. Commerce would explode as after parties filled our city’s restaurants. Festival-goers and celebrities would shop at our retail stores. DFW film enthusiasts would have easy access to the event and get to experience the ease of life that has been created in our quiet town. The film festival would attract the exact demographic that our city needs, especially to complete the vision of Town Center. Who better to own a brownstone than globetrotting CEO’s, celebrities, athletes, artists, and entertainers that want luxury, convenience and easy access to DFW airport?

SOUTHL AKE F I L M F E S T I VA L The notion is exciting, but why Southlake? Infrastructure. Muller says, “The layout of the street between the Hilton and Harkins is prime, there isn’t another place like that in the DFW area.” Which, if you’ve visited other film festivals in the area (Dallas International Film Festival or USA Film Festival), you know exactly what he’s talking about. While the other film festivals have remarkable content, the nature of 75 and congestion of traffic limits its growth. Being able to walk from the Hilton to Harkins to Brio to Anthropologie and back to your room at the Hilton, is something that you can’t do anywhere else in the Metroplex. Convenience and ease of access are something that consumers really value. Muller also sees the film industry taking a major investment in this area because of its geographic location and quality of living. “The location of DFW makes this area very attractive for the film industry, quality of life is very high and cost of living low, and in cities like ours there are great schools,” says Muller. Which is absolutely true; this is exactly why Toyota is moving their headquarters from Los Angeles to Plano. In addition to the economics of our area, the aesthetics and film locations are also a factor. “Within a 100-mile radius of the DFW area, you can get several different looks - lakes, desert, mountains, small town feels, multiple urban settings, a subway, a lot of variety - which is why we won awards for the show Prison Break. Gary Brown, the producer that worked on Walker, Texas Ranger as an assistant director, had recalled the locations and what they were able to do with Walker for their 8-year run on CBS.

They were shooting up in Chicago, it was cold, hard to get around, and labor unions made things difficult. He didn’t want to shoot there. It was great to get him relocated out here, his kids were going to school out here, and so it all worked out great for Prison Break. He was the producer on it and did some directing, we built million dollar stages and soundstages, there were mysterious sets built over in Fort Worth, and they took advantage of the additional money the state gives you for utilizing underutilized areas,” says Muller. Art in the Square requires over 600 volunteers to operate. Since we only envision blocking off the area around Division, we won’t need as much manpower. So, do you like movies? Do you want to help bring the film festival to Southlake? Justin Muller is putting together a committee of film enthusiasts and ‘doers’ that want to see this idea become a reality. Specifically we are looking for volunteers to help with: Film Submission Reviews We will receive hundreds of films and we’ll need to filter them and select the best ones. Thanks to technology, a lot of this can be done from your home computer. We need people to take the time to watch these films and pick out the best ones. After visiting David Bates and Bettina Pousttchii’s transformation of the Nasher, we decided to revisit the fair to see some of the remaining galleries that we had missed from the Gala on Thursday night. And I’m glad we did. Art Fair’s can be hard to process. Unlike our own Art in The Square, where the Artists set up shop and sell their work, these galleries handpick the Artists they deem worthy of seeing - a filter of sorts. Yet, even with the filters, you start to see repetitive ideas, it all starts to look the same and you zone it out. So when you have an experience like we did, it’s meaningful. As we turned the corner on the first floor in the FIG (Fashion Institute Gallery), we entered the Nancy Hoffman gallery from New York city and encountered Joseph Raffael’s ‘Spirit of Nature’ which stopped us in our tracks. This 55’ x 58’ piece seemed to tell a story with its color that had our complete attention. To simplify it, this is just a painting of a few flowers and water, but the reality of it is that it is a masterpiece by an 82-year old Brooklyn native who has spent his lifetime experiencing nature in Southern France and the past 42+ years perfecting his expression

of it. It speaks a story to our subconscious with its array of colors that is truly breathtaking. More than 25 years ago, Joseph Raffael and his wife, Lannis, moved to the South of France, wanting to simplify life and to be able to paint without distraction. There, Joseph has created a garden, with flowers of every color of the rainbow, that he draws from for his paintings. These paintings aren’t to be glanced at briefly. They are made to be patiently experienced, every inch and detail is filled with rich color, shape and shadow. There were no prices in this particular gallery. Like Bruce Rosenstiel, I am a color junkie and I desperately wanted to own this painting so that I could experience it daily and have my life enriched by it. I asked them to send me a few press kits (which to my delight, are SQUARE). This particular living modern artist has watercolors in over 30 museums, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Reviewing the prices (if you email me, I’ll tell you), I say for the affluent collector, Raffael’s pieces are must haves. For the rest of us on a budget, there are prints, lithographs and posters available. Sotheby’s does auction watercolors every month, some for as much as six million dollars. At the very least, the collector would have a mesmerizing painting by a modern master. For more information contact nancyhoffmangallery.com info@nancyhoffmangallery.com 212 966 6676

Willie’s Picnic
Willie Nelson is an American icon. Back in 1973, the hippie movement was well under way when a 40-year-old Willie Nelson decided to hold a music festival in a field in Dripping Springs. Headliners included Kris Kristofferson, Waylon Jennings & Tom T. Hall that brought over 40,000 music fans. The picnic continued and grew. So much so that July 4th, 1975 the State Senate declared it “Willie Nelson Day in Texas”. In 1976, the picnic attracted 70,000 attendees. In 2004, Nelson announced that he was bringing his picnic to Fort Worth. The mayor gave Nelson the key to the city.
HAPPENINGS
Most of you have attended the picnic, some of you haven’t. This year, the picnic is being held at Billy Bob’s, the “World’s Largest HonkyTonk”, with other headliners such as Josh Abbott Band, Dierks Bentley, Billy Joe Shaver & David Allan Coe. You can expect some last minute surprises when it comes to the lineup. Willie has a habit of calling the performers on the phone and bringing them over to his picnic. Weihenstephaner Kristall Weissbier Crystal Wheat Beer
Brewed on the Weihenstephan hill in Freising just outside of Munich, where the brewers there have passed down their knowledge of the art of brewing since 1040. That’s almost 1000 years! This golden-yellow Kristall Weissbier has a fresh citrus flavor ‘harmonised’ with spicy banana notes. The fine sparkling gives it a tangy and animated appearance. Goes well with fish, seafood, white meat or enjoyed as an aperitif!
