“ARCHITECTURE SHOULD SPEAK OF ITS TIME AND PLACE, BUT YEARN FOR TIMELESSNESS.” – FRANK GEHRY
OF ALL THE ART FORMS THAT SHOULD MEAN the most to us as a community, architecture could very well be the most important one, because it lasts for such a very long time and has such a tremendous impact on the environment.
One of the driving forces behind us wanting to discuss architecture is the Southlake Performing Arts Center (To Be Named), which has been in talks and plans since around 2008 and is on the verge of becoming a reality.
When you hear a song you don’t like, you can turn it off, or if you see a painting you don’t like you can look elsewhere. Or as Frank Lloyd Wright said, “A doctor can bury his mistakes but an architect can only advise his clients to plant vines.”
So let’s have a look at some of the world’s most beautiful and innovative creative spaces! The first one we bring to you is from Pritzker prize-winning architect Renzo Piano (please Google his work and educate yourself) who was kind enough to lend a presentation to our humble magazine. The building is ‘Auditorium Del Parco’ in L’aquila, Italy!
Architecture is one of the very first art forms; it’s the art of creating spaces for us to live in, work in, eat in, learn in and perform in!

With a slew of exciting new exhibits, the Perot Museum of Nature and Science promises the next season at its museum to be one of excitement, wonder and discovery. Already a hit with audiences this past January was the 2theXtreme: Math Alive! exhibit that provided an insight into the endless uses on the subject, many of which were appealing to younger audiences exploring the museum. While the touring exhibit entertained guests in Dallas, Math Alive! used the examples of math in video games, sports , music, fashion and many other daily forms of modern entertainment. As Dallas says goodbye to Math Alive! the museum ensures that guests will continue to be thoroughly entertained throughout the remainder of the season. Eugene McDermott, CEO of the Perot Museum, said that aside from the look at how math shapes the world today, the museum will offer “a travel back in time to celebrate a masterful detective whose scientific methods still inspire us.” The detective that McDermott speaks of is none other than Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s literary hero, Sherlock Holmes. From February 15 to May 10, 2015, the Perot Museum will be the host to The International Exhibition of Sherlock Holmes.

According to museum releases, the exhibit will transport visitors to Victorian London to collect clues and use the interactive methods applied by Holmes in order to solve a “murder” based in the theme of the exhibit. Not only will guests put their deductive methods to the test, but the exhibit will also have lots for them to look at in wonder. According to the museum, Holmes will feature “a dazzling array of original manuscripts, publications, period artifacts, film and television props and costumes.” Admission to the exhibit requires a surcharge, aside from general admission. The surcharge for museum Members to experience Holmes is $8 for adults, $7 for youth and seniors, and $6 for children. Non-members will pay up front for the museum and exhibit. This price comes out to $27 for adults ages 18-64, $23 for youth and seniors, and $20 for children ages 2-11. The museum also plans to feature several 3D films that will educate and entertain audiences on the Galapagos Islands, robotics, tornadoes, and deep-sea expeditions. DIVERSITY IS DEFINED IN “CONCENTRATION” ART SHOW 24

The “feel” of the AP Art Show that opened Jan. 26 in the Carroll Senior High School Art Annex Gallery was one of “individualism and expression.” It was apparent that freedom was given to these Advanced Placement students to express their creative sides without limitations of subject matter. What made this art show impactful and interesting were the feelings and interpretations that some of the art students expressed and shared about their “concentration,” which ran through all of their artwork. For Serina Taluja, her concentration was “happiness.” Her artwork symbolized meditation, goal setting, projecting understanding, love, and knowledge. To her, it meant literally being “one with the universe.” Her artwork surely speaks of that; it is contemplative and thoughtful. Morgan Franklin’s concentration was “identity.” She felt that the “inner energy on so many different levels” is what drives her artwork in this exhibition. Her work in oil pastels left no doubt that she is on the right track. “Energy” was Abby Detrich’s concentration, and she showed a very interesting display of hand-done artwork, along with a digital treatment that was displayed over a little ocean of VHS tape. The tape was taken out of its box, which left one wondering just what video, home movie, or data was forever disengaged from being viewed and admired, other than in the inert condition it now was displayed. It makes one think how we could be the product of all of the photos, videos, and images taken over time in different formats of data preservation. The iPhone and all camera phones have created an endless universe of photos and selfies. Seeing the broken VHS tape is a reminder of the images that are lost in long forgotten formats.

VISUAL ARTS In addition to conventional artwork in different media, the art show also included photography. Duc Tran displayed some photography that bordered on the macabre but with an elegant flare for aesthetics. His photography is based on self-portraits, and he has a good understanding of light, composition, and atmosphere. Duc’s photography is to be admired as an art form that also incorporates an eye for technical savvy. The concentration of Ciara Smith was “synesthesia,” which is when the stimulation of one sense triggers a response in another sense. For example, you see a picture of the ocean and imagine that you can smell salt water. This art show was an experience of leveling the different art forms and “stressing emotion through expression,” as Sarah Banks said. I was taken aback by artwork that seemed, in many ways, more mature in nature because of this self-examination. For any spectator, it was difficult to know what one appreciated more: the art or the artists’ thoughts. For me, it was a combination of both.

Force of Necessity A PE X-A RT L E AGU E A N D T H E C I T Y of Southlake have been talking about an “Arts Center” for quite some time, since 2007-2008 in fact. What a wonderful idea! In order for the idea to become a reality a few questions come to mind. Who will pay for it? Where will it be? What style will it be in? How will it sustain itself once completed? A more useful question to ask ourselves first comes from the mother of all invention.

Necessity. What do we need?

Force of Necessity The answer is that a cultural destination is needed. We need an environment to exhibit and appreciate the performing and visual arts in a structure that is designed by a world class architect surrounded by nature. We need a place for families to go to do more than shop and eat. A place to spend time with nature and each other. We need a creative environment that is the primary attraction and not an afterthought to accompany retail and office space.

Instead of one big box, this structure is broken up into three interconnected volumes. There is a central volume, which contains the actual auditorium, and the two service volumes: the public service area and the performers’ service area. The angle of the largest cube provides rake seating for 238 people, and the outdoor area facing the auditorium can be fitted with seating, making it possible for about 500 people to attend open-air performances, or view the performance inside projected onto screens around the cube.

The 238-seat auditorium has a stage that can hold around 40 musicians. Two stepped seating areas facing each other accommodate the audience; the larger has 190 seats in front of the orchestra, and the smaller has 48 seats behind it. The angle of the seats ensures the best possible listening and viewing conditions. The walls’ raw wood surfaces are hung with a series of acoustic panels orientated towards the audience to reflect sound inside the auditorium. The panels, also made of wood but with a high quality finish, “soar” in space, in some cases superimposed on the vertical walls but always
remaining detached from them, and in other cases floating in space, hanging from above. What is especially relevant to us here in Southlake and the Metroplex is the size and scope of Auditorium Del Parco. By having a smaller auditorium we can create a more intimate and privileged experience. Why would we build something to seat thousands of people when there is the Winspear or Bass Hall 20 minutes away? We are a small and special town, we should have a small and special auditorium surrounded by beautiful landscaping.

PROFILES
ARTIST, TEACHER, MOTHER-OF-FOUR CHANNELS PASSIONS INTO LINE OF EXCLUSIVE PAINT PRODUCTS In the world of do-it-yourselfers taking on home renovation projects as hobbies and passions, many rely on both experts and their peers to help identify products and techniques throughout the process. No one knows this better than Annie Omar, who has lived and breathed painting her entire life. An artist and teacher by trade, Annie started Maison Blanche Paint Company after identifying the need for a higher-quality “no-prep” paint product in the marketplace. Growing up as the daughter of two artists, Annie was never far from a paintbrush and can of paint – two things that would keep her busy for hours. After a stint in the corporate world, she soon found herself pulled back into the direction of art and was determined to find a way making a living doing what she loved. Annie opened up a paint store and began

On February 13th ‘The Burger Shack’ on the north side of 1709 had a capacity crowd for Vinyl Revue. If you’ve parked on 1709 and glanced north towards Bicentennial park you’ve seen the Burger Shack. It is the only establishment in Southlake with art work on it’s exterior (a patriotic mural) and it’s also the only restaurant in Southlake that offers kids a place to perform original music live for their friends, families and fans. The only other establishment to show original live music in Southlake is the Starwood club, a private event space. Both the Starwood and the Burger Shack are owned by Southlake Resident Tom Stephen. Tom and the Burger Shack should be commended for their contribution to our area’s culture (and also for their breakfast that begins serving at 7am)!

Lucky for us he is still alive and touring! Stevland Morris is a man of cultural significance. He has recorded over 30 top ten hits and received over 22 Grammys, and vested significant humanitarian efforts for Africa and the blind. If you watched the Grammys this year, you saw a tribute to him. For those that might be unfamiliar with Stevie Wonder’s music, here is a list of records worth downloading to your iThing or Android. “HAM FOR SHARING� is a great sandwich to start off spring. To start we use a delicious tavern ham sliced paper thin. It rests comfortably on a bed of freshly sliced iceberg lettuce and thinly cut red onion. On top, a newly sliced California avocado and vine-ripened tomato. All this is wrapped in soft buttery American cheese and placed on soft marble rye bread. What makes this ham sandwich so special is the dressing and the seasoning. Sweet and spicy honey Sriracha mustard and a generous covering of black pepper. A great balance between the meat, vegetables, dressing, bread, and seasoning bring this sandwich all together with a refreshing spring-like quality that will brighten your day.

Paulo International Messina Hof has moved into our neighborhood and brought their Paulo line with them! The Messina Hof Paulo line is their highest tier of wine and features only the finest wines they produce from nearly 40 years of winemaking. The Paulo varietals are not produced in consecutive vintages and feature only the best possible fruit of a particular year. They are meticulously handcrafted from vine to bottle by father and son winemakers Paul V. Bonarrigo and Paul M. Bonarrigo. Paulo bottlings number less than 3000 bottles per vintage with some bottlings under 1500 total bottles. The Paulo wines are all dry red varieties and are only offered for purchase at the three Messina Hof wineries (Bryan, TX / Fredericksburg, TX / Grapevine, TX) or through the Messina Hof Wine Club. There are several outstanding wines over at the hotel converted winery, the first that we recommend is the Paulo International blend. The handcrafted Paulo International is a rich blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc done in a Bordeaux style. It is aged in fine European oak for one year and then a second year in American oak. The Paulo International is 100% Texas fruit sourced from the Rea Gae Vineyards, Young Vineyards, and Smotherman Vineyards in the Texas High Plains. The wine is dark and rich with warm vanilla and berry flavors. The Paulo International has won Gold Medals at the Taste Guild International and Lone Star International Wine Competitions, Grapefest’s People’s Choice Tasting Classic, Best of Texas and was a Champion at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo.
