PUBLISHER’S LETTER
R A I N , R A I N , G O A W AY Art in the Square has come and gone and we had some of our favorites; we expect you do as well! This issue, we decided to highlight some of the outstanding artists. I suppose purchasing an actual painting is the strongest testimony to your opinion, so we picked out one Southlake family’s purchase for their home by Erin Hanson. I also had admired Erin’s work the previous year and love her color work, so we’re excited to share it with you! Trish Biddle, Clark Crenshaw, and Yoram Gal are three more
artists that we felt compelled to share with you this year. If you purchased something that you’d like to share with us, please do contact us as we’d love to hear from you.
Lastly, we have a touching story about a boy and his lemonade stand who reminds us that when life gives you lemons, make lemonade! Enjoy the issue.
We have a professional as well as a student artist highlight this month: Bill Kennedy (who is a world champion in his field!) and Serina Taluja (who won awards for her painting this year!). It would seem that talent and creativity are not two features our community is lacking at all!
(And don’t forget to sign up your kids & grandkids for summer camps!)

SUMMER CAMPS
S
ummer is one of the best times of the year for your kids to immerse themselves in the arts. Camps offer a great opportunity for your kids to not only spend a good deal of time learning, but often times the friendships that they make at camp will last them a lifetime. Sometimes seeing someone the same age as you that is ahead of you can be a great motivator! That certainly happened to me at the UNT jazz camps and Berklee camps when my classmates were Norah Jones, Robert Glasper, Mike Moreno and McKenzie Smith. Here are some camps that we suggest for your student.
MUSIC UNT JAZZ COMBO CAMP Denton, TX / July 12th-17th / ages 14+ / $825 The curriculum includes: combo, faculty concerts (each evening), jazz history and listening, jazz theory (basic to advanced), master class instruction on bass, drums, guitar, piano, saxophone, trombone and trumpet, student concerts and student jam sessions. http://www.jazz.unt.edu Note: for teenagers serious about music, this is the best possible camp that you can attend. PROFILES LOCAL RESIDENT JOSHUA WEST RECENTLY won 2nd place at a lemonade tasting contest and got to meet Jason Garrett! During Art in the Square, he pre-sold cups and shared his foster story, was able to meet adopted kids and even some grownups that were adopted. Joshua is learning how to be an entrepreneur and, more importantly, how to give back to others. Here’s Joshua’s story: Hello! My name is Joshua West and this is my story. When I was just a year old, my mom was unable to take care of me. So she did something really brave and loving and put me in foster care with the Louisiana Baptist Children’s Home. My foster parents took me in and took care of me. I suddenly had a dog and two brothers! It was fun. I went to a lot of baseball games and to church on Sunday. My new family loved me very much. After about a year, I was adopted by my foster family. We went to see a nice judge and I got to sit in her lap when she signed some papers that gave me a forever family. It was a lot of papers. I love my mom, dad, and brothers, and I know that God put us all together because He loves me too. I pray for my first mommy every night and want her to be safe and happy. My lemonade stand is something I’ve done for 2 years. It teaches me how to operate a business and manage money. I take what I earn and spend some, save some, and give most of it away. I work so I can raise money for other kids that need to be adopted. I want every kid in foster care to find a forever family just like I did.

REGARDING
Erin hanson Born and raised on the West Coast, artist Erin Hanson, has brought her unique form of art to Southlake during the annual Art in the Square festivities in the community. “Art in the Square is one of my favorite venues to sell my paintings. I love the late night show when the whole festival sparkles with light. I prepare for months for this show, creating some large-scale works and show-stoppers that I can’t wait to share at the festival!” Hanson says. Over the years, Hanson has developed a signature style labeled as Open Impressionism that she uses to paint oil landscapes on canvas. According to a release from Hanson’s publicist, “Her pictures are visually exciting, highly expressive and beautifully composed.” Using striking color choices and bold brushstrokes, Hanson’s work has the ability to immediately captivate a viewer’s attention.
From a very young age, Hanson has always had a thirst for the adventurous lifestyle. Growing up in a family of boy scouts, Hanson’s favorite memories as a young girl are camping and backpacking in the gorgeous landscapes that surround California. Hanson started to pursue her passion for painting as a child in elementary school, using an easel that was constructed by her father. Hannah went on to flourish in her passion and eventually went on to becoming accepted into a special scholarship program at the Otis College of Art and Design. Hanson eventually took a pause from the arts and pursued her fascination with the world of science and in 2003, graduated from UC Berkeley with a degree in Bioengineering. Hanson went on to reconnect with the world of the arts through her love of nature and adventure. Hanson immersed herself in the red rock of Nevada and explored the rugged terrain of the West.
“There is a glow that illuminates from her canvas,” a release on Hanson says. “Broad, decisive swipes of paint, thickly applied, create a mosaic “Rock climbing brought me back to my artistic roots, and my love for of color and texture on the canvas.” the outdoors is boldly expressed through my oils. At the student art display at Art in The Square this year, you may have seen Carroll student Serina Taluja’s work. Serina is this year’s Lone Star Artist award winner. Her family moved here a few years ago from Nice, France. You could call her a Renaissance lady, because she plays the acoustic and electric guitar, practices yoga, and likes reading and poetry in addition to painting. She started painting when she was little and this particular painting has a story.
“This painting is of my great grandfather, who our entire family called Nanaji, hence the name of the painting. Originally, I was painting this for him and wanted to send it to him in India as he was facing a serious illness. Tragically, he passed away just as I was starting the painting. This drove me, however, to make this one of the best pieces I possibly could. I worked on it for many weeks and made my color choices based on how positive and lively he was all the way until the end of his life. I admired his cheerful spirit and contented outlook on life, which I hoped to portray in the painting as well.”

Who is your favorite artist? This is such a tough question because I have so many favorites, but I’m going to have to go with Salvador Dali, simply because his manipulation of the world around him I find completely fascinating and his compositions are always spot on, which is something I strive for in my work. What is your favorite part of painting? I love getting started when I’m painting, mostly because at first no paintings really ever look “good”. Mine always start looking like a bunch of bright scribbles all over a canvas, and even though this is the most unimpressive part of the painting process, I admire that it is the most natural and free part of it. All of the artist’s real thoughts and inspiration come out in the initial painting sketch. Where do you get your inspiration? The people around me are probably the biggest inspiration in my life. After moving so many times and meeting so many different people, I’m in love with the diversity of people in the world, and I think if you allow people into your life and let them inspire you, each one will do so in their own way. So in a sense, when you let people inspire you, your work can never be monotonous or boring, everything you do is different, just like every person you meet. Where are you happiest? Can the Earth be my answer? I really don’t know. I’m happy in the studio because that’s where I work. I’m happy at work because I’m relaxed there. I’m happy outdoors because that’s where I find peace. I’m happy just about anywhere that I can be myself. What is your most treasured possession? My acoustic guitar would have to be my most treasured possession because I’ve had it for so long and it helps me work through things when I don’t know how to get through them on my own. If you could have dinner with anyone, who would it be? Probably Mahatma Gandhi, because I’m inspired by his peacemaking efforts in India and what an impact they had on the way the world looked at fighting and violence in that they are generally unnecessary. What 3 items would you bring with you to a deserted island? Camera, food, is friends an option? If not friends, then a sketchbook.
It’s a good day to be a dad. Treat Dad to the sweetest gift on June 21st.

FOOD
THE CLUB There are some types of sandwiches that spawn dozens of variations but there is nothing like the original. The CLUB SANDWICH is one of these sandwiches. Simple and elegant, this sandwich was a favorite to King Edward VIII and his wife Wallace Simpson. Supposedly created in the late 1800s at the famed Saratoga Club-House - also home to the invention of the potato chip - this sandwich took
America by storm. Originally, the sandwich was very simple: turkey, bacon, lettuce, white bread, tomato, and mayonnaise. In later versions of the sandwich, ham was added and became the standard to which all variations are linked. At Weinberger’s, we honor the sandwich by starting with a Texas Toast. To that we add a fresh bed of shredded iceberg lettuce. On the lettuce we pile a thinly sliced
tavern ham, the kind that was served in railroad club cars of long ago, followed by a pile of freshly cut honey-roasted turkey breast. Grilled maple bacon tops off the meat to give it dimension. Of course the sandwich would not be complete without creamy mayonnaise, salt, pepper and freshly cut garden tomato. The greatest of the summertime sandwiches: the heavy hitter club. Enjoy! southlake ARTS

MESSINA HOF
2014 Private Reserve Viognier This classic French varietal has flourished here in the Lone Star State due to its need for a long, warm growing season to come to full maturity. Viognier produces a fuller-bodied white wine with soft and lush characteristics. It has great natural aromatics that include fruits like peaches and pears, floral notes like violets and lilacs, and some slight minerality. The Messina Hof Private Reserve 2014 Viognier boasts great viscosity with balanced acidity. Our Viognier goes through malolactic fermentation which simultaneously adds more weight to the wine while decreasing the acids. This allows the creamy aromas of the varietal to come forth and contributes to a pleasant mouth feel. The floral notes are front and center along with a distinct note of peaches and crème. This is a great wine for someone who likes the body of a nice chardonnay, but may not like the heavy oak and vanilla notes that many chardonnays may have.
Viognier has found a new home in the state of Texas!
Viognier pairs great with spicy foods because its natural aromatics and fuller style can hold up well against the heat and spice of those dishes. This makes it a very popular wine with numerous Texas cuisines including all styles of barbeque, Tex-Mex, and Hispanic foods. Or it’s great right out of the icebox while sitting on the porch swing watching the sun go down. Messina Hof Grapevine Winery www.messinahof.com
