The performing, visual, applied and culinary arts are extremely important to our students’ futures. Not so much so that they will one day become a professional in the arts field, but for what the arts does for their creative thinking and their ability to work out complex problems.

ummer is one of the best times of the year for your kids to immerse themselves in the arts. Camps offer a great opportunity for your kids to not only spend a good deal of time learning, but often times the friendships that they make at camp will last them a lifetime. Sometimes seeing someone the same age as you that is ahead of you can be a great motivator! That certainly happened to me at the UNT jazz camps and Berklee camps when my classmates were Norah Jones, Robert Glasper, Mike Moreno and McKenzie Smith. Here are some camps that we suggest for your student.
MUSIC UNT JAZZ COMBO CAMP Denton, TX / July 12th-17th / ages 14+ / $825 The curriculum includes: combo, faculty concerts (each evening), jazz history and listening, jazz theory (basic to advanced), master class instruction on bass, drums, guitar, piano, saxophone, trombone and trumpet, student concerts and student jam sessions. http://www.jazz.unt.edu Note: for teenagers serious about music, this is the best possible camp that you can attend. African Safari “Bruce, would you be interested in leading photography tours in Africa?” Not a question I ever imagined to hear. But, when former photography student Sally Szekely invited me to consider the possibility, it only took me about two seconds to accept! Turning the dream into a reality was a bigger challenge than we thought, though. Over the next several months, including a two-week familiarization trip to Zimbabwe, we worked with Sally’s friends at Sikeleli Safaris to create and refine small-group itineraries that would appeal to general visitors interested in quality wildlife viewing as well as avid photographers. We wanted to ensure ample wildlife opportunities as well as attractive and diverse landscapes, and we were determined to offer our travelers unique experiences by getting away from the beaten path.

To see and do what?! In an attempt to share our experiences I took my first photographs by connecting a camera to my birding scope on our second trip to Africa in 1998...and discovered a passion for photography that has led to a second career and added yet another dimension to our travels.

African Safari Sandi and I have visited more than 50 countries over the years, returning many times to favorite locations. So, you might ask, what makes an African safari so special that we return again and again? There is simply nothing like it! You wake up to the dawn chorus of birds, sip a quick cup of coffee or tea and nibble biscuits while keeping an eye on any activity at the local water hole, and then head out on the first excursion of the day: a game drive, a boat trip, a guided walk – or maybe all three. Every outing has its own set of experiences. Nothing is predictable. You never know what you might see or what sort of encounters you might have. It’s absolutely exhilarating! You’re meandering along, admiring this and that, go around a bend and suddenly a group of elephant emerge from the trees...or you come upon a herd of giraffe...or zebra...or gazelle. Warthogs scamper across the track. Birds swoop and call; some perch and pose. Your keen-eyed guide spots a leopard or lion in the distance and slowly drives to the ideal

African Safari viewing angle. There is no rushing about. There is no rigid schedule. There are, however, tea and coffee breaks, always featuring some tasty accompaniment. A picnic may have been packed so you can explore a more remote area or you may return to camp for a sumptuous lunch followed by an afternoon excursion...and then you’ll enjoy sundowners from a beautiful vantage point. Dinner is splendid and, if you can keep your eyes open, you’ll be dazzled by the brilliant night skies...or you might opt for a short excursion to look for nocturnal species. Finally, you tuck yourself in, somewhat astonished by how much you have already seen and done, and know that the next day will bring its own set of new adventures. British sculptor Phyllida Barlow has a new commissioned work at the Nasher entitled Tryst, on view until August 30th, 2015. A ‘tryst’ is a private rendezvous between lovers or a designated meeting place (14th century English). So the title of the show is flexible depending on your mood. Tryst is a monumental installation work that (intentionally) overfills the Nasher’s rooms for you to walk through and ask yourself why. Tryst is a youthful exhibit (created by Barlow, born 1944), an installation exhibit bordering on performance art. Rather than attempt to intellectualize it, categorize it, and put the boxes on stilts in a traditional box, you
should just enjoy it and laugh. This is (I think) the intent of the former art professor - to create fun, childlike installation pieces to walk through, and then give materials to the kids (and adult kids) to have their hand at creating their own installation work. Barlow employs commonplace materials— wood, plaster, concrete, cardboard, and strips of colorful cloth or tape—in extraordinary, mo nu me nt al, r a ms hac k le, ha n d - b uilt structures that expound a dizzying array of novel sculptural forms. Towering, bulky accumulations of matter “elbow their way into the room,” as the artist puts it, filling the space and looming over viewers. Recent projects at the Tate Britain in London and the

New Museum in New York have showcased the prodigious talents of Barlow, who, after a distinguished teaching career at the Slade School of Art in London, is finally enjoying the broad international recognition her work has long deserved. “From her use of found materials in the tradition of assemblage to her progressive, imaginative and uncanny use of exhibition spaces, Barlow riotously but cheer fully challenges our expectations on both what a sculptural object
can look like and the way sculpture might inhabit a museum setting,” says Director Jeremy Strick. “We are thrilled to have this remarkable talent occupy and contend with the pristine spaces of the Nasher with her material wit and ingenuity.” Barlow’s exhibition at the Nasher, selected as one of the most anticipated “Best in Show” exhibitions of 2015 by Modern Painters magazine, was organized by the Nasher’s Chief Curator Jed Morse and will feature all new works inspired by and created for the unique
spaces of its galleries. SOUTHLAKE CARROLL GRADUATE HELPS NEW AUSTIN STARTUP REVOLUTIONIZE MUSIC EDUCATION FOR A DIGITAL AGE
PICARDY Picardy Learning, a burgeoning company formed by music graduates from the University of Texas-Austin, has officially launched its innovative new web app to the general public. The Picardy app combines the power of interactive technology with a quality learning experience in music education. In so doing, it aims to alleviate one of the fundamental problems in modern education: teaching to individual students with unique points of view and different ways of learning. The Picardy app helps students, regardless of age or skill level, build better music skills through active engagement with the curriculum. Picardy’s learning program emphasizes music theory, musicianship and “ear-training” to give students a better understanding in music education. “Starting to study composition, it was learning musicianship skills and music theory… that really made me a better composer or really made me understand music in general,” said Co-Founder (and Carroll Graduate) Cassandra Shankman. “It made me feel one with the music.” Musicianship, more particularly, is stressed as a vital expression of the artform that is music. “Most people understand the technical side of learning music… the other side of that is learning how to take those from simply playing notes to really making music,” said Picardy Co-Founder Hermes Camacho. “The way I see it, somebody just doesn’t deliver a speech. They have to convince the audience of what they’re saying.”

THE JOHN LEY GREEN BERET
Every now and then, we get the opportunity to create a sandwich. We design sandwiches to fit a person’s personality. This sandwich is our most successful vegetarian sandwich in our shop. It is the JOHN LEY GREEN BERET. John was a three-time recipient of both the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart awards. He was a very gregarious individual, larger than life, Father Santa type of guy. When I first started on it, we went with a hearty sandwich full of beef, pork, turkey, cheese - you get the picture. All of this until I found out he passed away from a heart illness.
Not the way to remember somebody with a sandwich like that. I took other information I had on John and went in a Mediterranean avenue, creating a vegetarian, heart-healthy sandwich. At first his friends were skeptical, but after a group tasting, they all agreed John would approve. Since we have added it to our menu, it has become the most popular vegetarian sandwich on the board. The John Ley has a base of spring mix to which we add a layer of red pepper hummus. That is covered with a handful

of shredded iceberg lettuce and slivered red onion. On top of the onion we add the heart of the sandwich, which is our own green and black olive mix. Cover the olives in slices of cool cucumber, chopped vine ripened tomato, and sprinkles of feta cheese to complete the filling. Finally, it’s drizzled with our own chili oil to give it just enough heat to accent the vegetables and served on a nine-inch amorosa-style baguette toasted with just enough garlic to give it sharpness. There is a deeper aspect to her piece, Chosil Kil is a storyteller, or more accurately, she is an artist who creates or displays objects that are imbued with the story of their making. Drawing on her own personal history, the artist weaves tales -both real and fictional - that breathe life into otherwise mute, static objects. But like most skilled narrators, Kil never divulges all her secrets, providing instead just enough detail to pique her audience’s interest and keep them guessing, engaged and wanting more.
For Concentrations 58 at the Dallas Museum of Art, Kil has reinterpreted her pneumatic sculptures based on her recent travels throughout Texas and the Southwest. Titled Sweaty Sun, the exhibition transforms the DMA’s Stof fel Galler y into a delightful landscape of oversized geometric cubes and triangular forms. Inspired by Big Bend National park, this minimal forms corral viewers into the space while obscuring what’s around the corner The little ones will love it!
