Hello Friends! e best part of summer for me is the chance for aernoon thunderstorms. Nothing is better than a rainy or stormy day. Yes, you guessed it; I’m a weather junkie. I’ve always loved everything about the weather. In fact, starting in the fourth grade and continuing through high school, if you had asked me what I wanted to be, the answer was simple. I would’ve said a meteorologist. I’m not sure where my fascination for the weather came from, but perhaps it came about aer riding out hurricane Kate back
in the mid 80s. As a kid I would draw weather maps and make up my own forecasts. My parents bought me a dry erase board to draw my maps and forecasts on, and they even let me set the board up in the living room so that my mama, daddy and sister could see my daily forecast. I was blessed to have very supportive and encouraging parents not to mention a patient sister. And then there was my favorite local meteorologist, Gil Patrick, on channel 10. In my opinion, he was the best and was a great fixture in Southwest Georgia for many years. I remember getting up for school and watching “Today in Georgia.” ere was Gil Patrick in front of his wall of coffee mugs. In school, when we would go to the library, I would of course set out to find books on the weather. And believe it or not I found several at the Doerun Elementary School library, but they were old – really old and outdated. Most were from the 1950s or 60s, but that didn’t keep me from reading those dusty books from cover to cover. en one day the librarian at school, Mrs. Bowen, picked up on my interest in books relating to the weather and called me over when I came in. She had ordered several new books about weather for the library. I was so excited! ough I didn’t understand it in elementary school, years later I realized how in tune to the students Mrs. Bowen was and how much it meant to me that she would pay attention to a student’s interest. Today that dedication means much more to me than it did as a young child. I am not sure why I never pursued meteorology. I guess aer graduation, like so many others, I got caught up in life. And soon the years passed. But one thing that has never changed is my love for the weather. Even today my family and friends will call me to ask me if rain or storms are on the way. In an odd twist, Heath Cro, managing editor for “Moultrie Magazine,” had an equally burning desire to become a journalist. He even arranged for me to meet Gil Patrick once at the Sunbelt Expo. We have known each other since we were kids because we attended the same church. We used to joke about us both working at WALB one day – he as the news anchor and me as the meteorologist. Years later we are working together; it’s just in a different setting than we had imagined. Life happened. As I write this we are experiencing a pretty wet summer, and a new tropical storm just formed in the Atlantic. I think I just heard it thunder, too. I guess I’d better get out my dry erase board; I’ve got a forecast to make.

Hello Again! Summer is here! As a kid I remember older adults saying, “Time sure does fly!” I always thought, “What are they talking about?” To me it seemed like time went by slower than a snail’s pace. But alas, as I have gotten older, I now understand that statement, because those snail’s pace days have now turned into faster than a speeding train days. Months and years do fly by. However, one thing I have always tried my best to do is to stay active! Doing that has caused me to find myself a bit over extended at times, but I would rather be working wide open than sitting around and Jim Hill doing nothing. I have always said that I will never retire. I don’t think I could stand not doing something. I love being creative, and I love being around people. I have been blessed, and I don’t want to take anything or any time that I have been given for granted. I was thinking just the other day that I have been in the drapery and interior design business for over 43 years. During that time I have made countless drapes, valances, pillow shams, bedspreads, throw pillows – you name it. In fact I would imagine some of you reading this have some of my work in your homes right now. at makes me so proud. I have seen our community grow and change over the years, but one thing has always stayed the same: good people. ere are many good people here, and together we can continue to make Moultrie and Colquitt County the best community possible. I certainly can’t imagine living anywhere else. I am always so proud to call Moultrie my home. Speaking of fine people, we are proud to bring you the story of Gene and Gwen Reid, who several years ago, bought the house known to many as the Carl Harrell home. I was able to do some work there many years ago, and I can tell you that it is a beautiful home. e Reids have taken this Moultrie landmark and made it their own. We appreciate the hospitality they showed us while working on this article. Also in this issue is a first. Local photographer, Abby Mims, gave us carte blanche when she decided to open the doors of her studio and home for the first time ever. She has shared some amazing photos with us, and she sat down with Heath Cro for her first-ever interview. What a joy she was to work with! And finally, many of you have requested that we profile local musicians, and we try to pay close attention to what our loyal readers ask for. In this issue, we introduce a new band to you. ey call themselves EggWater Palace, and there’s quite an interesting story behind the naming of the band. You’ll meet three very nice young men who have big plans and even bigger dreams! is is a very special issue of “Moultrie Magazine,” and we hope you enjoy reading it cover to cover. Each story was a great deal of fun for us to bring you, and we’re excited that you finally have it in your hands. As always, we thank you for your support. We’d be nowhere without you.

Aer spending several years traveling across the country, Gene and Gwen Reid have returned to the place they call home. Gene Reid says he came to Moultrie in 1954 as a cadet in the U.S. Air Force and was stationed at Spence Field. He marched in a parade that year as an Air Force drummer, where Gwen was serving as the high school beauty queen, and the two met shortly thereaer and got married. e Reids le Moultrie while Gene attended and graduated from Georgia Tech, and he says he worked in advertising for several years in Atlanta. e two returned home when Gwen Reid’s father was hospitalized. ey bought the Rest-a-While Nursing Home on Fih Avenue Southeast from her parents, and they ran it until deciding to retire. When first living in Moultrie, Gene Reid says he and Gwen were very involved in many aspects of life in Colquitt County. In addition to the nursing home, they owned a number of businesses, including the Highlander Inn on First Avenue Southeast. Gene Reid says he served on the planning commission for nine years, including eight years as chairman. “We’ve been involved in just about everything [in Moultrie],” Gwen Reid says. She says they bought the Victorian house on Sylvester Highway, now called Pecan Hill Inn, at auction. Aer renovating the house, they called it home for more than two decades. Her grandparents were the second family to live in the house, which she says most attracted her. Aer selling the house in 2001, Gene Reid says they moved into a motor home and spent the next several years traveling the United States. While on the road, they visited California, New York and Maine.

Once they decided to move back, Gene Reid says they contacted a real estate agent in Moultrie and were given several options. As they were driving near Tampa, Fla., they were told about the Carl Harrell House on Second Street Southwest, a listing the agent would only have available for a week. Gene Reid says he came to Moultrie and looked at the house

“and we love it.” e Carl Harrell House was originally owned by Carl and Jemique Harrell, and Gwen Reid says that Harrell moved it to its present location in 1963. It was originally located next to First Presbyterian Church, but he moved it aer he was unable to get it approved to use as a mortuary. Aer it was moved, Gene Reid says Harrell added a wing to each end of the house, built brick around it and added air conditioning, a fireplace and a staircase. e two-story house has five bedrooms, three and a half bathrooms, a guest house with two bedrooms and a bathroom, a four-car garage, swimming pool, and a wrought-iron fence surrounding the property. Gwen Reid says the house has had several owners since the Harrells lived there, and each has a place in the history of Moultrie and Colquitt County. Tom Vereen Jr. bought the house from the Harrells. It was later owned by Ruth Hall as well as the owners of Don Jose’s Restaurant before being owned by John Faille. e Reids bought the house from Faille. Gwen Reid says she likes the look and feel of older houses. “We have been fortunate to own two of the prettiest homes in Colquitt County,” Gwen Reid says. “We have the pretty, old homes in our blood.” Gwen Reid says she was drawn to the Harrell House when she first saw it. Although it has two stories, she and Gene Reid live mainly on the main floor, allowing the upstairs to be used primarily for guest rooms, including visits from the couple’s three children. Gene Reid says he considers Moultrie his home even though he came here in the military in the early 1950s. He and Gwen Reid, who grew up here, are truly back home again. “We love this town,” Gene says. “We have become a part of it.” M

hat do the dog days of summer mean to you? At Lauri Jo’s, they mean busy, busy, busy! ey also mean gnats and sweat along with the sweet aromas of fresh vegetables and succulent produce that fill the rows on our farm. en, on top of that, the smell of pepper jellies, salsa, and pickles cooking everyday in our commercial kitchen. Summer stands for Swimming Until Mama Makes Everyone Rest for some, but it sure doesn’t mean that at Lauri Jo’s Southern Style Canning. For those of you who don’t know, we grow about 80 percent of the produce that we use for our preserving. We usually begin picking some of our crops mid to late April. April and May are steady months for picking, but the rush comes in June and July. We work as hard as we can

cooking green tomato pickles and watermelon rind pickles to keep from paying astronomical prices in the winter months. Also, there’s just no comparison to the fresh taste of produce that is grown locally right here in Colquitt County. Even during the hot days of June and July, while the Georgia Power meter is spinning non-stop because the air conditioner is running full speed, we have to think six months ahead to Christmas time. When Mike and I first started the business, we thought people had lost their minds when they would talk about markets. Now we understand fully. We set up exhibits for markets in Dallas, Texas, and in Atlanta where wholesalers come to order for their stores, and we have to think Christmas and the holiday season because they are buying half a year ahead of time. Boy has all of this taken some getting used to! So, needless to say, there is hardly ever any down time at Lauri Jo’s. From picking and cooking, to marketing, selling, and delivery, every day is a day full of different kinds of experiences. I personally love the anticipation of the holiday season and wondering where in the world our products may ship to. I know many people thought I had lost my mind when I quit my job of teaching and started making jellies and such; I know my husband sure did. Now, we just stop and say, “Who in this world would have ever thought something like this would be going on in a little town in Colquitt County?” We try to bring a variety of events to our place in Norman Park as well. In June we had Chef Bernd Schmitt from Dallas, Texas visit and prepare a delicious dinner using several of our products. I have taught several canning classes showing people the basics so that they
can visit the canning plants in their own area and feel comfortable when they walk in. Earlier in July, Sergeant First Class Joe Kapacziewski was at our store in Norman Park autographing his book, “Back in the Fight.” is book is certainly a heartwrenching read for those of you who are history buffs, but I have found it to be so touching just because of the sheer fact that Joe married a Moultrie girl, Kimberly Smithwick Kapacziewski. I can only imagine her side of the story. I have spoken with them several times, and Kimberly told me that she never knew some of the things that Joe endured until she read the book. I know that I personally take so many things in my life for granted, and my freedom is one of them. Again I say, “thank you,” to every man and woman who has served or is serving our country so that my family can have freedom. is book will make a great Christmas gi too; so come and shop with that in mind. Well, as you can see, we are very busy at our operation here in Norman Park. I hope that you are enjoying the dog days of summer as much as I am. Whether you are visiting friends, family, or just a place you have never been, I wish you safe travels this summer. If you choose to have a staycation, check out the www.exploregeorgia.org website for several places you may not realize are right near your home. You always have an open invitation to come see for yourself what goes on every day at Lauri Jo’s if you haven’t been. If you have visited us already, then make sure to shop at your favorite retailer that carries our products, and keep some of our goodies in your pantry. Also remember to keep up with me on Facebook, follow me on Twitter, or check out my website for new recipes, events, or just to see where we might be trying to put Norman Park and Colquitt County on the map next. Blessings until next time,

He always said it smelled like rotten eggs.” “We were talking about band names one day,” Milner says, “and he was talking about [the] egg water that he always had to drink over there.” Since the mobile home was their palace, the name came easily. Although Strickland wasn’t privy to the original conversation, he added his approval one night via Facebook chat. “I just went with it,” says Strickland. “It sounds nasty enough that maybe somebody will remember it, I guess.” Since November 2012 the band has performed several shows in the area and in Atlanta. Strickland says the band has made appearances in Mikell’s hometown of Port Charlotte, Fla., in Valdosta at both Bluewater Bar & Grill and Lucky’s, and the Peachtree Tavern in Atlanta. ey also performed at the Cocktails for Cancer benefit at e Ivy in Buckhead. “We love playing at Bluewater down in Valdosta,” says Strickland. “ere’s always a

Each member of the band comes from very different musical backgrounds, and that comes out in their own music. “Music is the common language that we speak,” says Strickland. Strickland says he grew up listening to Grateful Dead, the Allman Brothers Band and Hank Williams Jr. “I’m a huge Grateful Dead fan,” he says. “I’m really into Jerry Garcia’s guitar playing. I just love listening to that, and that’s been a real big influence.” Milner says he listened to ZZ Top, Creedence Clearwater Revival and the Allman Brothers Band. While he and Strickland’s musical tastes are more aligned, Mikell’s background in music – which is both jazz and heavy metal – has successfully merged with theirs. “I think when we started playing together,” Strickland says, “we

bby Mims did not drink a secret potion, but she undoubtedly fell into the rabbit hole. Sitting across from the photographer in her grain-bin office and studio, people might find themselves keeping an eye open for the mad hatter dashing to aernoon tea with the queen of hearts. It is that magical. Surrounded by a plethora of pastel pink and teal, it is just enough to make even the proudest peacock drop its head in humility.

Mims readily admits that her path to being one of Moultrie’s premier photographers was not a journey with a foregone conclusion. “I always had the strong desire to be a photographer, but when I went to school, I kind of lost sight of it,” says Mims. “I thought, ‘Okay I can never be a photographer; I can never make a living doing that.’” She entered business school at Mercer University and studied for two years before leaving to pursue her photography degree. She says she took basic art classes there, but due to the school’s credit-hour policy, she wasn’t able to get into photography classes without taking the prerequisites. She then moved to Athens and planned to attend the University of Georgia where she could focus her attention on photography. However, Mims found that her credits did not easily transfer because Mercer is a private institution while the University of Georgia is public. She says her next step was to enroll at Gainesville College in Athens. ere she planned to take the necessary classes in order to be accepted by the university. Her journey to college didn’t stop there, however. “It wasn’t so much I was going the wrong path,” Mims says. “I just had a really strong desire to go the other way.” She says a random meeting with an Athens photographer changed her direction and set her on a new course.

Mims says in the beginning she felt that people would be too intimidating, and she says her own timid nature led her to believe she would never photograph them.

If her seven years in business are any indication of her success, Mims might do well to pat herself on the back occasionally. “I don’t take it for granted,” she says. “It could all go away so quickly.” Admittedly shy, Mims says her success is a reflection of the support from those closest to her. “My family, my friends, and my clients speak for me because I

trips home much like she makes regular trips to Atlanta now. “I would always come back and forth,” she says. “I don’t think I could just pick up and go.” For Mims, there is too much to lose. “I love being around my dogs and my family and just sort of doing my thing,” she says. Should the day ever come for her to marry, she says she has a long list of photographers that she’d want to shoot the wedding. ough she wouldn’t share that list of photographers, she says they are all “amazing” – so amazing that she says she would be intimidated around them. A quick reminder forces her to recognize that her name has been on many a list of brides in the area. In Moultrie, at least, her name has become part of a trifecta of photographers including Carrie Viohl and Jill Stringfellow. “I think what sets me apart from all photographers – and I think the same for them as well – is the connection you make with clients and your subject,” she says. “I think it is your individual personality that comes through in the picture.”
“I love South Georgia,” she says. “I really do. ere’s just something so sweet about it.” “I’m extremely emotional and connected to people, and that’s special to me,” says Mims. “So, that’s what I love.” She says it’s that connection that makes the difference between a professional photographer and anyone else just taking pictures. Mims says that while she does put some thought in beforehand, she prefers to see a shoot evolve through her subject’s own emotions. She says her photo shoots have a laid back, happy casual style. “I love those moments when you can just see that little moment of joy or happiness either between two people or a kid,” she says. “at is where the magic is to me.” With the majority of her shoots being on location, Mims says she does still have the work of maintaining a business which always brings her back to her grain-bin office and studio. Although much of her work is not in Moultrie, all of her photos are processed here. She

admits that when she’s processing photos, her days can be 12 hours long with her focus solely on the photos that she will first perfect and then share with her clients. “I want to work hard and do the best for my clients,” she says. Mims says she is happiest when her clients are moved by the photos she has shot for them. “I just want everyone to know, I guess, that that’s my goal, is just to give them something that makes them smile,” she says. With true self-deprecation, she gives credit where it’s due. “I don’t think I would be the person I am or doing this without the Colquitt County Arts Center,” she says. Mims says she grew up in art classes with Miss [Ann] King and Miss [Jane] Simpson. She says they taught her to paint, to understand the color wheel, and most importantly, she says they taught her to be creative. “at is such a good memory for me,” she says. “I really truly mean that. ey just inspired me to be artistic always.” While photography is her cra, she is no novice at interior decorating. Stepping into her studio, one might feel that she’s entered a fairy tale where at any moment the three good fairies – Flora, Fauna and Merryweather – might appear waving their magic wands. And while she has certainly spent enough time in her studio to become conditioned to it, she says there are rare occasions when she can see it as a newcomer might. “When the pecan trees are in bloom,” she says, “and you drive up that driveway, and it’s mowed and all the flowers are fresh…it does seem magical.”
