GOLF TIPS

T

CONTINUOUS SWINGING

he hardest thing about playing golf is that the ball is stationery. Having the ball lying there waiting for you tends to put most people into a state of paralysis. In the other ball games the ball is moving, you act instinctively. With golf the ball is there laughing at you. We find in our teaching that getting pupils to have full freedom of movement is the first and most vital thing. Until the pupil has eliminated all the tension in his/her body and is taking a full uninhibited movement at the ball, it’s very difficult to teach them the things that we want them to understand. We find an exercise called “continuous swinging” the most beneficial in actually attaining the freedom of movement. By taking away the ball we take away the inhibitions and the pupil learns to get his/her body functioning correctly before the ball is introduced. “Continuous swinging” is simply what it says, it’s swinging backwards and forwards, taking a full back swing, full follow through, full back swing, full follow through without stopping where the ball would be on the ground. Until you can swing backwards and forwards in a continuous flowing motion, maintaining rhythm and balance, you haven’t got much chance of hitting the golf ball where you want it to go. An important concept to understand is that the golf swing is exactly that, ‘it’s a swing not a hit’. Good players never talk about a hit, they talk about “a swing” or “a pass” or going through the ball or some phrase or expression that has connotations of flowing movement, they never talk about a “hit”. So practice your continuous swinging. Learn to swing the club without a ball then you’ll find if you put the same swing on the ball you play better than you dreamed possible. Tom Linskey

GOLF TIPS

ALIGNMENT

How To Set Up Correctly

I

I

f my pupil is having trouble getting the ball to go where he wants it to, the first thing I look at is whether or not he is aiming correctly. If they are okay, then there is obviously something wrong with the swing part. Very few people have any concept of where the target is when they’re swinging. A good player understands perfectly where it is and swings the club towards the target. On your follow through, when the club reaches horizontal about hip high, the shaft should be pointing straight at the target and the toe of the club should be up in the air. If you achieve that position the ball’s gone pretty straight. What you will find is that whatever direction the shaft is pointing in when you get to that position is pretty much where the ball has gone. So when you practice, lay a couple of clubs on the ground, one next to the ball pointing at your target and one across your toes parallel to the other club. A lot of people confuse the issue by actually aiming their body at the target which means that the club face is pointing to the right of the target, now they have to start swinging around the corner to correct it and this promotes all sorts of outside – in swings and accentuates slices. Aim the club face where you want to go which is toward the target. Your shoulders, hips and feet should be at right angles to the clubface or, parallel to the target line. This will feel to be about 3 to 5 metres left of the target with your shoulders.

IMPROVING YOUR GRIP

f you were going to hit a ball with the palm of your hand toward a target you would have the palm pointing toward the target. If you were going to backhand it you would have the back of the hand pointing toward the target. They wouldn’t point up or down but at the point where you wanted the ball to go. It’s always seemed logical to me therefore, when we are substituting a club face for your hand, that when you hold the club there should be some relationship between the back of the left hand and the club face and the palm of the right hand and the club face (this is for right handed players – reverse for left handed players). Place the shaft over your left hip and take your grip on the shaft near the club head. Grip the club in your fingers with the back of the left hand pointing toward the target and then place your right hand on it so that the palm of the right hand is also pointing towards your target. This will help you understand the

relationship between your hands and the club face. Then, slide your hands back up the grip maintaining that relationship. What you should find is that you can see about 2 ½ knuckles or nearly 3 knuckles in your left hand and 2 knuckles on your right hand, but you shouldn’t see your left thumb because it should be covered with the palm of your right hand. Remember the grip is basically in the fingers. This allows you to manipulate the club face and therefore direct the ball in the direction you want to go. You should be holding it lightly, like a tube of toothpaste with the cap off, and you should feel the weight of the club in your hands. If you grip it too tightly you lose the feeling of any weight in the head. Ultimately the grip is the most important part of the golf swing, because if your hands aren’t in the right place and they are not working correctly you can’t hit the ball where you want it to go. HOUSE OF GOLF BUNDALL

YINYANG GOLF LAUNCHES IN AUSTRALIA

A lot of things have changed in the Gold Coast golfing landscape over the last 15 years, but one thing has remained the same...

H

ouse Of Golf Bundall is still the Gold Coast’s premier Golf retail outlet. House Of Golf Bundall is owned and operated by popular local golfer Shane Revell, who plays off a scratch handicap at Lakelands Golf Course. Shane has a deep seeded love for the game and still manages to squeeze in 3 games of golf a week into his busy schedule. “When I first opened the shop I never guessed we would still be going strong 15 years later”, Revell said. “I always loved being around golf but my one true love was equipment. I loved learning about shafts, new head materials and also trying clubs out and seeing how different components effected how the ball flew”. It is very clear from the feedback from his customers that he is very hands on. From fitting out beginners to checking tour pros lofts, lies and swing weights, Shane does it all. The shop is perfectly located in Strathaird Rd, Bundall, in the heart of the retail golf precinct. “I invested heavily in a new launch monitor and computer fitting system and it works really well, the figures just do not lie. On the flip side, it is perfect at finding equipment that actually suits the golfer and will produce immediate results as well as give them confidence, and I take great satisfaction from that.” he said. He stocks all the big brands including Callaway Golf, Taylormade, Adidas, PING, Cleveland, Srixon, Adams Golf, XXIO, Exotics, Footjoy, Mizuno, Never Compromise, Yes Golf, Bridgestone and plenty more, and anything that you don’t find in the showroom or out the back, is only a phone call

away. House of Golf Bundall has a complete workshop and offers all repair services and custom fitting. Whether it is a simple re-grip all the way through to loft and lie adjustments, House Of Golf can do it. Shane is a strong believer in “try before you buy” and finds it difficult to believe people buy direct off the shelf when they can get a custom fitting session in-store, for FREE, before they buy. “It just astounds me what some golfers tell me. They come in and tell me they need extra stiff flex shafts because that is what their next door neighbour told them they need, but when I do a fit out, it shows how far off the mark they really where and what a waste of money they were about to make”, Shane said. It seems pretty clear from Shane’s passion that he is not going anywhere soon. “I am working on a new

customer loyalty program at the moment. I want to continually find better ways to service my customers as they are still my best form of advertising.” When it’s time to upgrade to a new set of clubs or in some cases, get your first set, it is very clear that House Of Golf Bundall will provide you with a great experience and make sure you have the tools to play your best golf.

inYang Golf Clubs has created a new design for the golf wedge, shaping the head of the club to create a motion that provides great results with no change in swing technique. The unique design of YY58 encourages the club-head to dig and slide simultaneously allowing golfers to extract the ball from the sand without having to alter the swing. During testing, the company has found if the club is swung as a normal shot, the results are highly consistent, enabling players to create a greater sense of continuity throughout their game, with less thought and technique required for this previously specialist shot. A spokesperson for YinYang Golf Clubs explained, “We are thrilled that after hundreds of hours of product design and development, we have come up with a rigorously tested solution to one of the oldest challenges in golf. We understand that enjoyment of the game is paramount, and that bunker shots really can turn golf into a good walk ruined. Our new club is providing a novel solution, and one that we think will be embraced by professionals and amateurs alike. For people who would like to know more they can call 0412 072 145.” YinYang Golf have a desire to make the game of golf more enjoyable. Founders Ben Hood & Paul Buchanan, Golf Coaches and designers of the club, designed their flagship product to help resolve the bunker golf game so many players have trouble with. For more information please visit: www.yinyanggolfclubs.com Stance: Take a normal square stance with feet wider than normal. Balance your weight evenly while digging your feet into sand Swing: Make a normal golf swing with your hands reaching shoulder height in back swing. Hit through the sand as though you where swinging from the grass. Keep face square for hard pan or buried lies. If the sand gets too soft just open face slightly. Brush the sand with club face and the club head will react to the sand. For more information call 0412 072 145 Gold Coast Golf Guide | 39

GOLF SCHOOLS

AUSTRALIAN GOLF SCHOOLS Have you ever thought, “if only I could remember what the coach taught me last week” or “my golf would improve if I could do this for a whole week?” Well, the Australian Golf Schools might just have the perfect solution.

A

ustralian Golf Schools provides intensive, personal golf tuition on the idyllic golf courses located on the Gold Coast, Australia’s number 1 golfing destination. They offer a range of courses ranging from 1 to 5 days, with the 5 day course being the most popular. Australian Golf Schools’ facilities at Emerald Lakes Golf Course are second to none; their coaches are all PGA accredited with International experienceand reputations as well as personal experience on the PGA Tours. The concept of AGS was conceived in 1978 during a dinner conversation. Mike Kelly, long one of the major teachers in Australian Golf, was becoming increasingly frustrated by the

half-hour, once-a-week type teaching that is forced on both pupil and teacher by the time pressures of normal, everyday living. He mused that, “if only we could have them for a week, we could make as much improvement as you would normally achieve in a year”. Tom Linskey’s response was instant. He had been toying with the idea of golf schools similar to those in the USA for some time. The first schools in March, 1979, were full to overflowing and Australian Golf Schools became part of the language of golf in this part of the world. The Australian Golf School program runs almost every week of the year and with its experienced team of internationally regarded coaches headed by founder Tom Linskey you are guaranteed a wonderful golfing experience. Along with their Gold Coast location, they also run regular schools in other parts of Australia along with their golf school tours. They conduct regular schools and tours to many of the best golf regions

in the world. Their partner business, Australian Golf Tours, now has schedules allowing you to play most of the Top100 golf courses in the world with your coach, and seeing some of the great golf and sporting events available. Their 5 day school is the most popular as it allows golfers to not only improve their game, but also play 5 of the best Gold Coast golf courses, under the watchful supervision of their coach. The school opens with a welcome dinner on the Sunday. During dinner they explain the program for the week and discuss what your aims and ambitions are for your golfing future. On Monday they pick you up from the hotel at 8.00am. It is a short drive to Emerald Lakes Golf Club from the accommodation ( Oceana on Broadbeach ). They spend the first part of day one observing and videoing the swing you came with, and developing a plan for the week. All the video they do through the week is compiled as a record for you to take home and it becomes your periodic reference point to remind you of what you learn while with them. Almost all instruction is totally personal.

Great accommodation options

There are never more than 3 people per coach and you get total individual attention. All aspects of the game are covered, for example, bunker play, reading greens, side hill lies, short game etc. In the afternoon they take you for an 18 hole playing lesson to see how you handle the scoring side of golf. They are also interested to see how you translate what they are teaching you on the practice range about your swing to the golf course. Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday follow the same format as Monday. Friday is spent at the range and the School finishes after golf in the afternoon.

After the school is completed, every student receives ongoing tips, swing thoughts and reminders to keep them on track. “We use all the modern swing technology but really, at the end of the day, our programs are designed to teach students what they need to do, or think, on the course under pressure. Combine that with a huge improvement in their short game and some students make massive in-roads in just 5 days. We even do a free club fit to make sure their equipment is helping and not hindering their improvement”, Linskey said.

CALL 0412 072 145

www.australiangolfschools.com.au

The programs must be working because they now have golfers visiting from all the over the globe. “We must be doing a good job because we have a great return rate. I really enjoy getting a phone call and email to say our students have achieved their goals of reducing their handicaps, or just playing better in some cases”, Linskey said. The main difference between Australian Golf Schools and most other golf schools is that they operate almost every week of the year. Their team of coaches, headed by the school founder Tom Linskey, are all PGA Members with international experience and significant reputations and are available to coach 7 days a week. This means that they can offer you the school of your choice at the time that suits you. A very important consideration in today’s busy world. Australian Golf Schools have a special offer for readers in conjunction with Oceana on Broadbeach: Book now and pay your deposit for one of their five-day schools on the Gold Coast to commence anytime before December 31st 2015 and you will receive an extra nights accommodation at Oceana on Broadbeach so you can relax after the completion of your school. JUNIOR GOLF

JUNIOR GOLF

Getting your kids started in golf is easier than you think. Best of all, it is fun and healthy and outdoors.

G

etting your kids started in golf can be one of the best things you do for them. It is a great sport that combines playing outdoors in a safe and controlled environment, and apart from learning to hit the little white ball, kids make great new friends. At Emerald Lakes Junior Golf Academy, a structured learning pathway is in place for juniors to develop their golfing skills through weekly clinics and lessons. This leads to on course experience, competition play and knowledge of golfing etiquette and rules, in a fun learning environment. They offer great camps for local and visiting young golfers. Whether you are wanting your child to enter a long term structured pathway or simply want them to enjoy a few days over the holidays, the Junior Golf Academy does it all. And the focus is always on fun.. fun..fun. As juniors progress and develop, they have the opportunity to play in local events and tournaments such as JGFQ tournaments, Pee Wee Pennants and the US Kids Tour. Just recently the lifetime experience of playing in the U.S. Kids World Championships was realised for 7 Juniors from Emerald Lakes. Over 1400 juniors from all over the world traveled to Pinehurst in North

Carolina to compete. Emerald Lakes represented over half the Australian contingent making the journey to the USA. The experience proved to be memorable for all of the juniors who enjoyed different courses and made lifetime friends. The popular school holiday camps at Emerald Lakes Junior Golf Academy offer half day and full day experiences for juniors of all abilities, from complete beginner to advanced level. The clinics focus on all aspects of the game and offer on-course play each day under the careful eye of their coach. The school holiday camps run every school holidays. To book your kids in or simply enquiry about getting your kids started, call Josh or David on 0416 811 399 or 0450 390 972.

10 Tips To help Get Your Kids Started In golf 1. Let the child call the shots We all want our children to learn to hit the ball the correct way. The kids just want to have fun. Let them explore the game on their own and swing and hold the club anyway they want to start with.

2. Do more ‘playing’ than just teaching Tests show kid’s attention spans are very short. Lessons should be broken down into small sessions so they keep focused. The idea is for the child to relate going to the golf course as fun.

3. Share the joy of a job a well done Excitement increases the child’s desire to learn and excel. The best way to boost a kid’s confidence and enjoyment is to

JUNIOR GOLF provide support even if you know it is not technically correct. Make it fun by smiling and laughing a lot. 4. Communicate on their level Don’t stand when you talk; kneel down and look the child in the eye and don’t talk about any technical stuff. 5. Tee it up to make it more fun Insist on teeing the ball up on every shot with every club and be ready to help at every turn. 6. Visual is better than verbal Don’t explain what you want them to do, show them. Kids learn so much quicker by copying than listening. 7. Safety always Children tend to act impulsively and quickly. Always make sure they are safe. Make fun rules for them and test them all the time so they understand what they mean, even turn it into a fun game. 8. There is no such thing as criticism In a child’s simplistic world, events are classified as either “fun” or “not fun.” Criticism is not fun. It implies the child did something wrong, as opposed to merely doing something incorrectly.

Working on their golf swings.

9. Think of creative ways to teach skills Little kids don’t have the strength, balance or mass to swing the club like an adult. A little creativity will help overcome these issues. 10. Teach them the short game first. Chipping and putting is fun and easy. It also teaches the basics of the game. Never walk past the practice green with a child, they love chipping and putting contests. If your kids are keen to learn, take them to Emerald Lakes Junior Golf Academy under the watchful eye of experienced junior coaches.

WE MEET

TOM LINSKEY EMERALD LAKES HEAD TEACHING PROFESSIONAL

Professional golfer Tom Linskey is highly regarded as the Director of Australia’s longest-running and best-known golf teaching schools.

Tom still enjoys playing the Pro-Am Circuit

H

owever, one of his most personally satisfying achievements was to once beat the Great White Shark, Greg Norman, in a long drive competition. In fact he was Australian Long Drive Champion in 1977 and again took that honour, this time in the ‘Super Senior’ category, in 2006. But it has been his diverse career in golf-related occupations that stands Tom apart from most other golf professionals. Not content to just ‘play’ for a living, he has forged a profession as both a playing and teaching pro, a golf course designer, a coach, an administrator and an entrepreneur. A full member of the Australia PGA since 1965, Tom was an active tournament player from then until 1991. He also played on the European Tour in 1972, ‘76 and ‘77. From 1995 to the present he has been active on the Australian Senior Tour. However, in 1981 Tom took a complete change in direction and became Director of the National School of Golf in Rome. Tom’s role encompassed many facets of Italian golf, including the responsibility for the training, development and

educational programs for all categories of Italian golf professionals. He was also responsible for developing and conducting a ‘college-type’ curriculum for Italy’s best young amateur golfers. As head coach he was charged with the advancement of all national squads, as well as the further development of the National Junior Program and on-going programs for the sport of golf in Italy. His two major success stories were Sergio Prati and Constantino Rocca, still rated Italy’s best-ever golfer. Prati was a member of the ‘college’ squad and in 1983 won the French and Italian amateur championships. Linskey ‘discovered’ Rocca at age 25, working as a caddy master at Bergamo Golf Club and encouraged him to realise his potential. History recalls that Rocca became a dominant player in Europe, and was a Ryder Cup hero in 1997 beating a 21-year-old Tiger Woods. Rocca was the first Italian golfer to play in the Ryder Cup and in the 1995 British Open at St Andrews, tied with John Daly, only to be beaten in a playoff. As a sign of their gratitude for his

five-year involvement with their golfers, Linskey was bestowed life membership of the Italian PGA. Tom’s initial appointment as a teaching professional was at Wyong Golf Club in 1966. He was there until 1974, but during that time showed his first inclinations as an entrepreneur, establishing a golf practice range at nearby Bateau Bay. In 1978 Tom founded Australian Golf Schools Pty Ltd, a golf school that still operates today and is based at Emerald Lakes Golf Club in the centre of the Gold Coast. He remains a director and head coach of the school and estimates that in 30 years he has tutored thousands of golfers. In 1991 Tom was ‘fitted’ for a new set of golf clubs by the Henry-Griffitts company and the ‘missing link’ fell into place. He has been closely connected with Henry-Griffitts ever since as a fitter and as the State Training Co-ordinator for Queensland. He insists that the fitting program be closely linked to the coaching program of his golf schools to achieve the best results for the school pupils. He has also ventured into golf design and construction, overseeing projects in Australia, Malaysia in conjunction with Tim Woolbank, and in Italy where he designed the third 9 holes for the Golf Club Bergamo l’Albenza. In Queensland, they are Logan City and Riverlakes, in Brisbane, where he has served as GM and Director of Golf Operations from 1987 to 2001. Other developments comprise Toukley, Mangrove Mountain, South West Rocks and Rum Corp Barracks, all in NSW. But Tom’s involvement in golf has not been without giving back. From 1978 to 1992 he held various executive positions, including honorary secretary/treasurer of the Australian PGA Tour; member of the founding committee of the PGA Tour; board member of the Australia PGA; Australian delegate to World PGA conferences and a committee member of the Greg Norman Golf Foundation. He shows no signs of curtailing what has been a fascinating and triumphant association with his world of golf. Gold Coast Golf Guide | 45

T

iger Woods is with out doubt, still the number 1 talking point in the world of golf. We used to talk about how incredible his feats were, his toughness

Now the talk seems to be on, what is next for Tiger? Why is he struggling? How long has he got left? Is he done? I hear a lot of negative and brutal synopsises on Tiger and the state of his game. We are all quick to put our 2 cents in, whether we are playing off 25 handicap, playing off scratch, or are fellow professionals. Everyone seems to care enough to want to add to the conversation. This is a great thing for golf as people talking about this great game is only beneficial for the industry, whether it is positive or negative. In this video (http://mindtomovement. com.au/tigersmind/) I put my 2 cents in to the conversation currently going on around the golfing globe. I commentate on what I see from Tiger’s form, his talk about his own state of play and goals, and why I think he is the greatest mind in sports. I give my point of view based on the facts at hand and with the bigger picture as a template. My conclusion may startle a few and may cause heavy criticism. I believe, Tiger still has 5 major wins in him. This feat will surpass Jack Nicklaus’ record of 18 majors and leave Tiger alone on top as the greatest record holder in Golf history. With his mind, how can you bet against him?

down the stretch, his incredible shot making or marveled at how he holed numerous winning putts on the 72nd holes of tournaments.
