When a Kingswood homeowner approached Michelle Lane of Modern Cottage about a special project, the designer was faced with an added challenge: The couple was engaged to be married, and the brideto-be wanted to surprise her future husband with a special groom’s gift — a redesigned screened porch, to be revealed only after they returned from their honeymoon.

The porch previously was filled with odds and ends. The homeowner sought a more put-together design — a low-key, casual space for watching TV or entertaining small groups of friends.

A sectional sofa from Pottery Barn anchors the space, while a simple, custom-built bar provides extra seating. But the focal point is the gallery wall. Lane, who had previously designed the family room, dining room and other spaces in the home, worked with the

homeowner on sourcing vintage artwork and mementos. Most of the items displayed, including the antique fishing poles and fly-fishing hooks, are family heirlooms. “We loved all the unique and personal touches we were able to bring to life in the space,” the designer says. SP

Fishing items on the gallery wall include a bait bucket and net that belonged to the homeowner’s grandfather. Some of the flies and lures belonged to her father, while others are “trophies” from various fishing trips the couple has taken. “The fishing rods are early 20thcentury bamboo rods handed down from a distant uncle of my Dad’s,” the homeowner says.
