Me and Stephen Hawking

S

tephen Hawking is a famous physicist who is known for, among other things, his book “A Brief History in Time.” I have not completely read and digested Mr. Hawking’s book (I’m still trying to find the CliffsNotes version). But I understand that in his book, Hawking theorizes about black holes and the big bang. As a Philadelphia sports fan, I’m very interested in learning more about the location of black holes because the Phillies, Flyers, and Sixers keep falling into them. Perhaps if Hawking can enlighten us on their location, we could program a GPS to help our sports teams avoid that dreaded fate. If that’s not possible, perhaps Hawking can assist us in figuring out a way for them to climb back out of the holes before decades slip by. Regarding Hawking’s theory about the big bang, other than producing the title of a hit TV show, exactly how does it help mankind? Is it really possible for us to figure out how to avoid the next big bang when we couldn’t See CARDELLA, page 10>>

Jan. 1, 2018, will be remembered as one of the coldest Mummers Parades in history, but it didn’t stop the brigades from entertaining the bundled-up spectators and those watching at home. The South Philadelphia String Band, based at 2820 W. Porter St., pictured here, took home the top prize in the String Band Division with their ‘West in Peace’ performance.

WARM RECEPTION: By Bill Gelman SOUTH PHILLY REVIEW

“P

hiladelphia considering postponing the Mummers Parade due to bitter cold.” The headline started appear-

Mummers Parade struts along as normal, despite weather woes

ing on media outlet websites Thursday afternoon. Yes, with the majority of the Mummers festivities taking place outside on a day in which the high was projected to be around 21 degrees, there was enough reason to sound the alarms. But this Philadelphia New Year’s Day tradition that dates back to 1901 will go on, even with the concerns about the

deep freeze. The city met with the five divisions of the Mummers Parade on Saturday afternoon, and they voted 3-2 in favor of the event going on as scheduled. The Philadelphia String Band Association was one of the divisions that voted in favor of a postponement. See MUMMERS, page 4>>

MUMMERS: Cold weather can’t stop annual revelry

<<Continued from page 1 “Based on the weather forecast of 20-degree temperatures and 20-mph winds, for the safety of of our Mummers and our fans, the Philadelphia String Band Association voted to postpone the parade,” the organization posted on its Facebook page following the vote. “However, with an overall vote in favor of marching on New Year’s Day from all parade divisions, the String Band Association will proudly participate in this year’s parade. “We encourage anyone that plans to come out to the parade to dress warmly and stay safe throughout the day.” To accommodate the marchers, the city provided special warming tents to protect the various Mummers divisions while they waited to perform. In addition, 50 to 60 buses were used to give Mummers groups the opportunity to stay warm along the parade route. The Philadelphia String Band Association posted a Facebook poll on Friday as to whether or not the Mummers Parade should go on as scheduled, with “Yes” taking 58 percent of the vote. Prior to the Mummers Parade, several other clubs weighed in on the coldweather issue. It comes with the territory of marching on New Year’s Day in Philly. Oregon NYA, part of the Wench Brigade Division, shared its enthusiasm following the vote. “See you all on New Year’s Day! That’s how the Mummers roll,” the group posted on its Facebook page following the vote. “Marching on New Year’s Day!” The Mummers Parade goes on year after year, and for the most part, weather conditions are not enough to stop it. There have been 22 postponements since 1922, according to the mummers.com website, with the most recent being in 2003 as a result of rain. The 1919 parade did not take place as a result of World War I, and the ‘34 event did not take place as a result of the Depression. This year’s parade will likely be remembered as one of the coldest, but the focus will now shift to getting ready for Jan. 1, 2019. In terms of how the clubs did with the judges, a complete rundown of the results along with additional parade photos can be found on page 8.

City’s solar energy drive finds sunny reception Philadelphia resident touts Solarize Philly’s aid to make renewable energy affordable By Tom Beck SOUTH PHILLY REVIEW

E

arlier this month, Fishtown resident Kate Zmich was part of the first phase of Philadelphia residents to take part in Solarize Philly, which is the Philadelphia Energy Authority’s new solar energy initiative. The initiative aims to pool buyers together in an effort to obtain discounted solar panels through group purchasing. “Initially the guys came over to look at my roof and make sure my room could sustain the panels without needing to get a replacement or major repair in the short-term,” said Zmich, who had 12 solar panels installed on her roof. “Then they checked out my breaker box, made sure I had space for it and in terms of the install – it took two and a half days and the guys were super professional, super sweet.” Lucky for Zmich, she no longer has an electric bill. However, she is still a customer of an energy provider. During the day when the sun is shining, the solar panels on top of her Fishtown home produce more energy than she needs. The excess electricity produced goes back to the energy provider, but at night or any other time the sun isn’t shining, the energy provider sends the excess energy back to her house. Ideally, Zmich would have a battery kept somewhere in her house to store the excess energy, but the technology for that has yet to become cost-efficient. “There was almost nothing about it that was hard,” she said, adding that she’d recommend it to any homeowner in the city. “It’s cool that I don’t have to buy coal energy. I’m into the sustainability aspect of it.” According to both Zmich and the Philadelphia Energy Authority, an independent office created by City Council President Darrell L. Clarke (5th District), the enrollment process is easy. “We will do a pre-screening to check for shading, roof condition and a few other questions, and then hand the homeowner off to an installer,” said a representative from PEA. “They will put together a complete proposal

TOM BECK/South Philly Review

Kate Zmich holds up a photograph of the solar panels on the roof of her Fishtown home. for your specific roof and walk you through it.” According to the PEA, the average Philly rowhouse roof can fit about 5 kW of solar, and in Phase 1, the average cost was about $16,000 for a set of solar panels. Additionally, there is a 30 percent federal tax credit that you get back in Year 1. “We will be offering a subsidized option to low- and moderate-income homeowners in Phase 2,” said the PEA. It should be noted that while there are obvious costs to installing solar panels, homeowners in many cases will no longer have to pay an electric bill. Solarize Philly offered enrollment from July 1 to Oct. 31 and referred homeowners to one of three installers chosen in an open and competitive Request for Proposals process: Solar States, KISS Electric and Moore En-

ergy. Zmich went with Solar States. “The guys at Solar States were super great, super knowledgeable,” she said. “It was a cool way to have some agency in expressing values with my money in that way. I’m going to have to use electricity anyway so why would I buy coal energy if I don’t have to?” In Phase 1, the PEA said, the average customer saved about $2,000 below market prices by participating in Solarize Philly. “Energy is a powerful vehicle for impact in our city,” said the PEA. “Residential solar creates more jobs per dollar invested than any other energy investment you can make – including fossil fuels. For every 100 households that sign up, 15 living wage jobs will be created. This is an opportunity to create family-sustaining careers that don’t require a college degree, reduces house-

hold expenses and helps Philly move the needle on poverty and equity.” In addition, Solarize Philly helps fund solar and other energy-related job training in Philadelphia public schools. “Last summer, we trained our first cohort of 18 students, and will train another group of 25 beginning in February 2018 from Franklin, Randolph and Mastbaum high schools,” the agency said. “Graduating students receive mentorship and get connected to solar and energy companies that are hiring interns, apprentices and full-time installers.” Zmich said that of the two installers who came to her house from Solar States, one of them recently graduated from Youthbuild Charter School in Yorktown. Zmich took out a 10-year loan to pay for her solar panels with no down pay-

ment. She pays about $50 a month for the loan, but she no longer has to pay an electric bill, which was about the same amount. She called the decision to go solar a “no-brainer.” “The energy authority group buyer discount thing made total sense to be another person in that pool to keep lowering it for everybody,” said Zmich. “The fact that it is such a relatively large program in the city gave me confidence that if anything went wrong it would be like ‘yeah, well, me and 200 other people are mad at you,’ so we have leverage in that way. Not that I think anything would go wrong, but it was just like this is a group of us doing this together kind of thing. So it just felt like it made total sense.” For more information visit solarizephilly.org.

REMEMBER WHEN

The ‘snow’ must go on for Mummers

J

ust last week, the City of Philadelphia was considering postponing the Mummers Parade, and for good reason — the high only reached 21 degrees on Monday. Not exactly ideal conditions for marching down South Broad Street. It was likely even tougher on the bundledup spectators watching from the sidewalks. It’s on rare occasion this annual New Year’s Day tradition gets postponed, with 2003 being the most recent. Sometimes, for the performers, the commitment requires do just a little additional prep work prior to the parade, like cleaning the snow off of a car while all dressed up in his Mummers costume. Hey, at least it was a snow-free New Year’s Day. When Jan. 1 is your day, there is no telling what Mother Nature will have in store. Photo provided by Margaret Stewart

Eagles eye postseason, rest starters in 6-0 Dallas loss The Birds will take on an NFC Wild Card winner at The Linc on Saturday, Jan. 13 By Al Thompson SOUTH PHILLY REVIEW

I

t may be time for Eagles fans to pump the brakes on what appears to be a down-trending attitude toward Eagles starting quarterback Nick Foles. Foles has played nine meaningful quarters of football since he took over for MVP candidate Carson Wentz, who tore the ACL of his left knee in the third quarter of the Birds’ 43-35 win over the Los Angeles Rams. In those nine quarters, Foles has produced 11 scoring drives, five ended in touchdown passes, six ended in field goals. The first nine quarters for Wentz in 2017 went like this: Five touchdown passes and five field goal drives. Obviously you can’t compare the overall talent and ability of Wentz with Foles. The point is Foles has been and should continue to be productive this postseason. In his one playoff appearance for the Eagles in January 2014 against the New Orleans Saints, Foles threw two touchdown passes and had no interceptions. He handed the Eagles defense and special teams a 24-23 lead with 4:54 left in the game. Foles never got his hands on the ball again. A special teams meltdown doomed the Eagles to a 26-24 loss. On Sunday, no one expected big results. The Eagles deactivated running back Jay Ajayi, defensive ends Derek Barnett and Brandon Graham, linebacker Nigel Bradham, defensive tackle Tim Jernigan and defensive backs Rodney McLeod and Jalen Mills. The rest of the starters played a quarter at most except running back LeGarrette Blount who reportedly had a contract incentive for $300,000 if he rushed for 750 yards on the season. Blount needed 21 yards coming into the game to secure the bonus. He got it in the second quarter against the Cowboys on a four-yard run. He finished with 37 yards on nine carries. The Eagles lost the game 6-0 and finished the regular season 13-3, far better than anyone expected.

Beau Allen and the Eagles defense held the starting offense for Dallas to just six points, scored in the fourth quarter, in the Cowboys’ 6-0 win over Philadelphia on Sunday, Dec. 31. Foles played just the first quarter in near zero-degree wind-chill weather and was 4 of 11 for 39 yards. He wasn’t sacked but threw a bad interception to his deep right meant for Alshon Jeffery. After the game, Foles talked about his confidence after these last two games. “I feel great. Honestly I feel great,” he said. “I know I can still go out there. I know what I can do. Sports are crazy at times. You don’t always play 100 percent of what you want to do, but you keeping trucking along. You keep working and I feel great. I feel really confident. I know the guys are confident in me. I’ve played with a lot of these guys. I’ve played with a lot of these coaches and I’m excited to get to work, get ready for the playoffs and keep this thing rolling. And we’re playing in [Lincoln Financial Field], so I’m really excited about that.” Foles also talked about why he has reason to be confident going into the playoffs. “I’d say because I’ve played a lot of football,” he said. “I know who I am as a player and I also know that throughout my career and my life, I haven’t always played great games. I’ve been in games where execution hasn’t gone like

we wanted it to. And the key is you remain confident because you know who you are. You know that you’re going to prepare every day to do everything to the best of your ability. It’s not like we go out there and say, ‘hey we’re not going to play to the best of our ability today.’ We went out there and played as hard as we could. We didn’t execute, but that’s stuff that we can fix because I know every single guy in that offensive huddle and on this team gives everything they have. That’s something that you can’t just teach. That’s something that’s within and we have that. The 13-3 — that’s because of that. Guys believe and they give everything they have. So that’s how I’m confident because I’m confident in myself and I’m confident in my teammates because I know what we’re capable of doing and that’s great things.” Nate Sudfeld played the rest of the way. He didn’t score but was a respectable 19 of 23 for 139 yards. He didn’t thrown an interception but was sacked three times. Sudfeld got the crowd energized with a 22-yard run in the third quarter for a first down. Sudfeld said he felt good about his effort.

“I feel more confident in my game than ever,” Sudfeld said. “I’m excited to keep going on this journey with these guys.” The Cowboys played all their starters the entire game and were held scoreless through three quarters. Dallas managed just six points on a 19-yard touchdown catch by Brice Butler with 12:19 left in the fourth quarter. The extra point was no good. Cowboys kicker Dan Bailey also missed a 23-yard field goal attempt with 16 seconds left in the game. Sean Lee, who played college football at Penn State where the weather is pretty similar to what the players, coaches and fans experienced on Sunday, said he thought playing in the extreme cold was just fine. “It’s weather where, the more you play, as you go on, the more you warm up,” Lee said at his locker after the game. He then started to laugh “I’m not going to lie, after being in Dallas for the last seven years, it is a little bit harder to get used to. The blood has thinned out a little bit when you first get out there and like anything else, you get used to it. A lot of times it’s fun to have that type of weather, it’s good football weather.” Ezekiel Elliott was told of Lee’s

comment about playing in the bitter cold being fun and was asked if he thought it was fun. “No,” Elliott said at his locker after the game. “Not at all.” Elliott finished with 103 yards on 27 carries (3.8 yards per carry) and no trips to the end zone. Elliott, who was playing in his second game since serving a six-game suspension, caught three passes for 38 yards. Elliott seemed to forget he was playing against mostly backups and scored Dallas just six points. Elliott was asked about getting over the 100-yard rushing mark against the NFL’s top ranked defense against the run. “It definitely was tough,” Elliott said. “It was just one of those days when it was slow and you had to fight for those yards.” Eagles defensive end Chris Long said he liked playing in the cold and appreciated the fans who made it out to the stadium. “It was chilly, but it was fun,” Long said. “It was fun to see our fans out there in the cold … at least we were running around. Those guys were out their with their beers and whatnot. It looked like they were having fun. They’ve been kind of their backbone all year, that energy they bring and that will continue here in a few weeks. That’s what makes this place fun to play at home.” Long said playing backups and playing so well defensively would pay dividends in the playoffs. “It’s important,” Long said. “You’ve got to have everybody at their best in the next two weeks. Dallas, they played their studs all the way through the fourth. So that was good for those guys to be in there. And a lot of those guys held their own. They did a really good job.” Sudfeld was asked if he put his coaches, teammates and Eagles fans at ease that he could fill in if it ever came to that. “I put myself at ease since I’ve been putting in my work in with my coaches and my teammates,” Sudfeld said. “It’s up to them if they feel at ease. I’m really confident at what we can do and I’ll do my job if I’m asked.”

EAGLES INSIDER

Defense will be the driving force of postseason success

D

oes defense win championships in the NFL? “Sure it does, Eagles safety Rodney McLeod said. “You can’t win if you don’t score any points! And we have the kind of defense to win in the playoffs. We’re putting it all together. That’s the optimistic view from the Eagles locker room as the team turns its attention to playoff prep and finding a way to maximize home-field advantage in the postseason. The Eagles need every bit of advantage, given the slimmed-down margin of error with starting quarterback Carson Wentz out. The Eagles offense lurched to the finish in season-ending games against Oakland (19-10 win) and Dallas (6-0 loss), and the airwaves and sports pages are overflowing with angst. Can Nick Foles step up his game in the playoffs? Is the Eagles offense capable of carrying its share of the burden in the postseason? How in the world can the Eagles reach the Super Bowl

Dave

Spadaro

‘...With our defense and with the crowd backing us up, I think we’re going to play great football when the playoffs begin.’ – Eagles safety Malcolm Jenkins

without Wentz? “The playoffs come down to the little things, said safety Malcolm Jenkins, who won a Super Bowl as a rookie with the New Orleans Saints in 2009. “The games come down to one stop on defense or a tackle made or missed, or a penalty. You have to be disciplined and you have to be focused. We have enough guys here who have had the experience, and we have the confidence in each other to get the job done. It’s not

going to be easy, but we know we have the pieces. “I’ve always believed it starts with the defense. The defense sets the tone. And with our defense and with the crowd backing us, I think we’re going to play great football when the playoffs begin. That’s just how I feel. I think we’ve had a pretty good year on defense, and we’ve shown flashes of being dominant. I expect our best is ahead of us. The Eagles will play either 1) At-

lanta, if the Falcons beat Los Angeles, 2) Carolina, if the Panthers defeat New Orleans and Los Angeles topples Atlanta, or the 3) Saints, should both home teams win this weekend in the wild card round of the postseason. All three teams have potent offensive attacks and all three have multiple ways of scoring points. But the Eagles do have the formula for a defense that can carry the team deep into the postseason. Up front, the Eagles have a dynamic group that fea-

tures Fletcher Cox and Tim Jernigan inside with Brandon Graham heading a deep and talented defensive end group. The linebackers have played well all season, and new starter Dannell Ellerbe brings 245 pounds of physical play against the run at the middle linebacker position. The secondary has given up big plays in the last half of the season and will need help from the front four to put consistent pressure on the quarterback. That the Eagles have been so good against the run, leading the NFL by allowing only 79.2 yards per game, bodes well in the postseason. And that’s where the Eagles are at the moment. They need to have great practices and put together a superior game plan and then play total team football to win in the playoffs. Wentz isn’t here. See you in 2018, kid. In the meantime, the Eagles have to play confident, aggressive football, led by the defense. It’s their best path to success.

In Loving Memory of

This day comes with sad regrets that brings back times we will never forget. As each year will pass, our emptiness grows. We miss you more than anyone knows. The tears we shed can be wiped away, but the ache in our hearts will always stay. If our tears could build a stairway and our hearts make a lane. We would walk the pathway to heaven, and bring you back again. Love, Mom, Dad, P.J. Anita, Joseph, Dana, Michael, Philip, Blaise and Joei
