he new year is hardly more than a week old, and I’m scared. Panicked might be a better word. Did you know that scientists are predicting chocolate is going extinct by 2050? It’s terrible that polar bears are dying off or that air pollution might become so bad that we might have to wear a mask when going to the Acme. But chocolate going extinct! Admittedly, I’ll be around 110 years old by the time it happens, but I planned on gumming my Trader Joe’s 85 percent cocoa bars by mid-century if I had to. No more chocolate? Is this payback for my not washing my plastic peanut butter jar before I tossed it into the recyclables? Folks, I need my chocolate. ... It used to be that engineering was the best profession for a young person to go into. Since Trump became president, though, it’s fact checking. There are no unemployed fact checkers. Last count of false statements by Trump as president is 1,950, according to the Washington Post. How does this man find time to golf? Yet he’s been on the course more often than Tiger Woods. Trump keeps his clubs next to his BIG nuclear button. Just by accident, you’d figure the president has to just stumble on to a fact, doesn’t he? If lying were a sport, Trump would be Wilt Chamberlain. ... And what is it with Trump calling the Department of Justice “the deep state.” I looked See CARDELLA, page 12>>

nother Mummers Parade and Fancy Brigade Finale have come and gone. The clock is officially ticking until the next one comes around, but the

wait to see the Mummers perform again in South Philly is much shorter, as in days away. One of the other popular traditions in Mummers country – the Mummers Serenade – weather permitting, will take place on Saturday (Jan. 13) at 1 p.m. Golden Crown, the 2018 winners in the Fancy Brigade Division, will be front and center at the

celebration as a result of last week’s very successful performance. For those unfamiliar with the tradition, the Fancy Brigades and various other Mummers groups perform, or serenade, the firstplace club. “It’s a chance to congratulate one another and See SERENADE, page 6>>

T

he South Philly Review changes things up every once in awhile with a special themed issue spotlighting the people, places and things that make South Philly what it is today. Popular editions such as the Spring Guide/Readers’ Choice Awards (see page 16), Difference Makers, Rising Stars and Mummers Guide are all planned for later this year. Top Businessmen and Businesswomen of South Philly were added to the rotation in 2017, and will return, as well. Now that 2018 has arrived, we are adding one more to the growing list: The Top Docs of South Philly. Face it, every South Philly resident needs a doctor, dentist or specialist to help fulfill the “healthy part of the “Happy and Healthy New Year greeting. With so many health professionals based in the neighborhood, there are plenty of options available to patients young and old. Who would you recommend and why? What makes this person stand out from the rest? It can be a primary care physician, cardiologist, OB/GYN, surgeon, or even the local ER doc. We are looking for more than just a name. The final list of docs will be based on nominations from you, our loyal readers and social media followers. Include as many important details about this person as possible. All of the entries will be reviewed by the SPR staff, with the final list appearing in an upcoming issue. The only rule is the doctor must have an office or residence in South Philly. Please include the doctor’s name, name of the practice (if necessary), office address and phone number. Include your name and contact info, as well, in case we have any questions. All entries must be received by Feb. 7. The date for the Top Docs of South Philly issue will be announced soon. Nominations can be submitted via email, news@southphillyreview.com, or mail, South Philly Review, Attn: Bill Gelman, 2 Executive Campus, Suite 400, Cherry Hill, NJ 08002. To submit an entry online, visit southphillyreview. com. If you have any questions, email news@southphillyreview.com.

Members of the Golden Crown Fancy Brigade rehearse for their performance ahead of the annual Mummers Fancy Brigade Finale on New Year’s Day.

SERENADE: Golden Crown set to celebrate top honors from parade

<<Continued from page 1 wish each other luck for the upcoming year – it’s one of the many wonderful traditions of the Mummers,” Golden Crown captain Bob Runowski said. The Pennsport resident also finished first among the captains in his division. In terms of the plans for Saturday, the serenade will stage at 3rd and Mifflin streets and march south past the clubhouse to Snyder Avenue. There will be bleachers set up along 3rd Street. This is a milestone 60th anniversary year for Golden Crown, as the brigade marched on Broad Street for the first time in 1959 under the George Martin N.Y.B. name, but would change its name to Silver Crown. The Golden Crown name was established in 1962. Runowski, who previously served as vice president, has been the captain since 2009. “Any win is special, but it was an amazing feeling to win in our 60th anniversary,” Runowski said. But like past parades, the other 11 Fancy Brigade clubs arrived at the Pennsylvania Convention Center with the same goal. “The 2018 Fancy Brigade Finale was one of the strongest and most competitive parades ever. All 12 brigades did an amazing job,” Runowski said. Of course, this year’s parade is hard to forget as a result of the sub-freezing conditions on New Year’s Day. The city even considered postponing the parade to last weekend, but the Mummers

marched on like it was just another day in Philly. “It was very cold, but not unbearable,” he said. “The excitement of the day and the tradition of marching down Broad Street and, later, down 2nd Street made it all worthwhile.” Golden Crown’s theme was “Out of the Web” in which the story centered around a spider’s journey to the “secret garden” and the celebration once he arrived. “The overall goal for this year’s theme was to put on a show that included more theatrical and dramatic elements than previous years,” Runowski, who is a human resources manager, said. It’s almost time to start planning for the 2019 event. The Mummers Parade is a once-a-year event, but being a Mummer requires dedication as the performers fit in practice time between commitments at work and home. Call it a passion. “The Mummers Parade truly is a year-long commitment, and every club works extremely hard,” Runowski said. “The combination of camaraderie and competitive spirit really keeps you going year after year.” As for Saturday, the early forecast is looking balmy where highs could reach the low 50s, but there is a chance for rain. But like New Year’s Day, the faithful Mummers crowd will gather. “We’d like to thank our families, friends, neighbors and the other clubs for their support. We look forward to seeing everyone on Saturday,” Runowski said.

On Saturday, Dec. 23, Dr. Floyd T. Nasuti, M.D. passed away surrounded by his family. Dr. Nasuti cared for infants, toddlers, schoolaged children and adolescents. He also encouraged parents to have their children fully immunized. He attended St. Joseph’s Preparatory High School and received his undergraduate degree from Villanova University. When he first went into practice, he spent a lot of time in the nursery with premature infants. Nasuti was an adolescent specialist practicing in Philadelphia. As an adolescent-specialist, Dr. Nasuti treated many common health issues that pre-teens and teenagers face, including mental, behavioral and physical conditions. Some of these issues included growth and hormone problems, sports injuries, eating disorders, substance abuse and more. Adolescent specialists perform medical exams, histories and diagnostic tests, and develop individualized treatment plans for each patient. Nasuti was a board-certified pediatrician in Philadelphia and Blackwood.

He was affiliated with many hospitals, including the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, Cooper University Hospital, Hahnemann University Hospital, Methodist Hospital, the former St. Agnes Hospital, Pennsylvania Hospital University and Thomas Jefferson University Hospital. He is survived by his beloved wife, Rose (nee McClain) Newman Nasuti, former wife Patricia (nee D’Ippolito) Nasuti and predeceased by wife Frances (Patsy) (nee Casey) Nasuti. He is also survived by Marian (Thomas) Gervasi, Patty (Donnie) Maiorano, Floyd Nasuti, Mark Nasuti, Joanne Nasuti, Christopher Nasuti, Katherine Nasuti and step children, Michael Annaian and Rachel (Don) Newman Rugh, as well as a sister, Lucy (Richard) Lanzelotti and a brother, Richard (Susan) Nasuti. Nasuti also leaves eight grandchildren – Mark, Grace, Angela, Ciara, Jordan, Emily, Nicholas and Olivia. Donations to your favorite pediatric charity in Floyd’s name are appreciated.

eet Miss Trixie! This 3-year-old terrier mix was found as a stray and was absolutely terrified in the loud, scary shelter. Luckily, a wonderful rescue got her into foster care and she’s flourishing and much happier! She is incredibly sweet and loves to be with people. She is dog friendly, and adores kids. Trixie is very eager to please. She is housebroken, and after a few minutes, settles down nicely in her crate. She’s an excellent girl who deserves to spend this year with a forever family! Local rock acts rallying to aid area charities City-based record company Lame-O hosting third annual event at Boot & Saddle By Tom Beck SOUTH PHILLY REVIEW

L

ocal bands from the Philadelphia-based Lame-O record company are taking over Boot & Saddle, 1131 S. Broad St., venue every Thursday throughout January for a part of Lame-O’s third annual Rock Residency at the venue. The best part? It all benefits various charities. Last Thursday night’s show featured Cherry with supporting acts Shannen Moser and Big Nothing. This Thurs-

day, on the 11th, The Superweaks will be headlining, along with No Thank You and Loose Tooth as openers. The following Thursday, Jan. 18, The Obsessives will headline with support from Hurry and Harmony Woods. The last show, which takes place on Jan. 25, will feature a headlining performance from Slaughter Beach, Dog and opening performances from both Three Man Cannon and Eight. All of the bands on all of the bills live in Philadelphia and are signed to Lame-O Records. “They’re great local bands who are

from here and care about Philadelphia and live in the world of punk music and indie rock music,” said Lame-O co-founder and owner Eric Osman. “They’re cut from the same class of Philadelphia guitar rock bands.” Ticket sales will benefit different charities on different nights. Last Thursday night’s show supported Planned Parenthood, while this Thursday’s show will benefit Beyond the Bars, a local charity that brings music education to incarcerated and undereducated youth. The following week’s show will ben-

efit the Philadelphia Animal Welfare Society, and the one after that will support the Philadelphia Education Fund. According to Osman, the artists performing in the shows were the ones who picked the charities. They “focused on local charities and on charities in need now more than ever before,” he said. According to Osman, the event came about three years ago when Boot & Saddle booker Jeff Meyers approached Osman about curating a month-long residency at the venue. Osman leapt at the op-

portunity. “It was great the first year, and he had us come back,” Osman said. In addition to supporting various charities, a coat drive will be running at each show. “We’re trying to get as many people to bring as many warm coats as possible,” said Osman. “We want to make sure people are staying warm.” All shows are age 21 and over and ticket prices are $10. Police pushing for security camera registration SafeCam effort urges residents and business owners to share surveillance video to help combat package thefts By Tom Beck SOUTH PHILLY REVIEW

O

ver the course of the 2017 holiday shopping season, package theft was more visible to Philadelphia residents, many of whom hear of packages being stolen off front porches from the news or on social media. While, according to the Philadelphia Police Department, there’s no actual data to prove that package theft is any more or less common than in recent years (although “overall thefts” have been trending downward), photographic evidence has shown that there have been allegedly at least a few incidents of package theft over the past month or so. The most recent example of one of these alleged incidents involved a sanitation worker stealing a package while on duty. However, there is one under-utilized way of combating such thefts, and that’s the PPD’s SafeCam program, which rolled out in 2011. The program covers the entire city. “SafeCam is one of the Philadelphia Police Department’s contemporary crime prevention and investigation tools that demonstrates the effectiveness of partnerships between police and the community,” said Sgt. Eric Gripp from the police department. “A citizen registering their camera not only helps deter crime, but assists the department in its overall crime prevention strategy in our neighborhoods.”

Here’s how it works: If you have a surveillance camera outside your home, you can register it with the police department. This helps the police know which houses have surveillance cameras installed. In the event of a crime, the police department can consult its network of registered cameras and see if any are located in a spot that may have recorded the crime. “Often times, surveillance footage can provide insight when it is the only ‘witness’ to a crime,” said Gripp in an email. “Additionally, it can also be used to help support (or disprove) eyewitness testimony.” “You will only be contacted by the Philadelphia Police Department in the future if there is a criminal incident in the vicinity of your security camera,” says the program’s website. “Police personnel, if necessary, may request a copy of any video captured by your camera, which may assist in the investigation of a crime.” Gripp said that residents’ surveillance footage comes in handy “fairly often.” “We encourage folks to visit our social media sites on Facebook, YouTube and Twitter to check out the numerous surveillance footage of crimes in progress that we post,” he said. There is no cost to register your surveillance camera and the registration process takes only about 10 minutes. To register for the SafeCam program, or for more information about the program, visit safecam.phillypolice.com.

REMEMBER WHEN

T

The old street plowing system

he snow arrived last week, once again covering South Philly streets to the point where going outside seemed like a really bad idea. Yes, the bitter cold temps had something to do with it, too. Whenever the snow falls, residents sit back and wait - sometimes wait and wait and wait - for the plow trucks to come. Ever wonder how Philly cleared away the snow way back when? The way back when we are referring to would be the year 1918 when a streetcar plow was the way to get the job done. Sure, the vehicles being used these days are different, but the clean-up job remains a grueling, time-consuming task, especially along those narrow side streets. Until the snow melts, don’t be surprised to find some chairs saving the spot where a car belongs. The scenario triggers the old savesies versus no savesies debate, but that’s a conversation for another day. Photo provided by Kath Donley

ALL’S FARE

New year generates some fresh restaurant news By Bill Gelman SOUTH PHILLY REVIEW

T

he arrival of a new year usually comes with excitement and anticipation of what’s coming in the months ahead. With South Philly having a booming restaurant scene, the conversation includes hot topics of “now open” or “coming soon.” After appearing at a variety of events around South Philly and beyond, Mike’s BBQ, 1703 S. 11th St., welcomed its first customers last week at the new storefront location. Michael Strauss is performing double duty as chef and owner. The soft opening took place on Jan. 3, with the grandopening event taking place on Saturday (Jan. 13). Brewery ARS, 1927-29 West Passyunk Ave., will be there providing free samples. Strauss said he has gotten a “very positive” response from customers. The brisket is a popular item. He is taking a serious approach to the barbecue business, as the kitchen includes a smoker that required a forklift to get it inside. Strauss is excited to have a stationary spot to fulfill his passion. “It’s good to have a home. I’ll eventually get

the anticipated spring opening of SOMO SoPhi - short for South Philadelphia - at the former Packer Park space occupied by Medora’s Mecca, 3101 S. 13th St. It’s being described as a “gamechanging restaurant concept.” The project will be a joint venture by Evans, his wife Takia and designerturned-restaurateur James Morrissey. is being described as a new American bistro offering elevated appetizers, sandwiches and entrees. The ground floor will also feature a lounge and a large al fresco cafe/sidewalk seating area. Other highlights will include what is being described as the ultimate chef’s table featuring a private event dining space with a boutique whiskey bar and chef’s kitchen where guests can request customized menus for their soirees or cocktail parties. “I’m super excited about selecting the décor for this one-of-kind room, and we hope it will be one of the most unique dining experiences in the region,” said Morrissey. Evans, who won a Super Bowl ring as a member of the New Orleans Saints, is a 12-year veteran, which includes the recently completed season with the Green Bay Packers. Off the field, he is a minority owner of the Arena Bowl champion Philadelphia Soul. “Philadelphia is our home,” said Takia, who grew up in West Philadelphia. “We’re really excited to open SOMO SoPhi this spring.”

EAGLES INSIDER

N

Foles returns to the postseason spotlight

ick Foles claims he doesn’t feel any unusual pressure as the starting quarterback for the Eagles as they prepare for Saturday’s Divisional Playoff game against the Atlanta Falcons. He’s been here before, in the 2013 season, when the Eagles won the NFC East and hosted New Orleans. Let’s hope it’s truly the case with Foles, because when the game kicks off at 4:35 p.m. on Saturday at Lincoln Financial Field, all eyes will be on No. 9. Replacing the injured Carson Wentz is one thing. Having a national audience and, it seems, an entire league, doubting you is something entirely different. “When it comes down to it, Foles says, “It’s just football, something I’ve been doing my whole life. I’m going to go out there and have fun and do whatever I need to do to help this team win. The talk in the two weeks since the Eagles finished up the regular season is that, yes, they need to be committed to running the football and chewing up

‘I have no doubt he’s going to be the man because he’s shown us already. We won three games with Nick in there...’ – Wide receiver Alshon Jeffery Dave

The passing game lives in this league. So Foles has to be on point. “I have no doubt he’s going to be the man because he’s shown us already, wide receiver Alshon Jeffery said. “We won three games with Nick in there – at the Rams and then against the Giants and the Raiders. We all have his back. There is no reason for him to think he has to do anything other than just play his game. He does his part and we do our part. That’s how it works. In Foles’s lone playoff appearance, in that game against New Orleans, he completed 23-of-33 passes for 196 yards and two touchdowns in the loss

clock and winning at the line of scrimmage to have playoff success. And, no doubt, the defense has to step up its game and lead the way because, after all, defense wins championships. But Foles has to make his share of plays, too. You score points in the NFL with “chunk plays in the passing game, and if you need any further evidence, look around at the past weekend and tell me what you saw in those wild card games. Big plays. Passing threats. Balance in the offense.

Spadaro

to the Saints. He left the field after throwing a 3-yard scoring pass to tight end Zach Ertz with 4 minutes, 54 seconds remaining in the game. Foles did his job. Would you take 23 for 33 and 2 touchdown passes on Saturday? Sure you would. The Eagles are going to have to be physical and run the football against Atlanta. They’re going to have to be really good against the ground-and-pound Falcons offense that also features superstar wide receiver Julio Jones. The special teams are going to have to win field position.

But the Eagles can ask Foles to only “manage the offense for so long. At some point, he has to make plays. “I just need to get the ball to my guys and let them make the plays, Foles said. Pressure? Let’s hope Foles has it right and he’s cool as a cucumber. He’s a big guy with a good arm who has had success in the NFL (27 touchdowns, two interceptions and a Pro Bowl in 2013). At his best, Foles is a startingcaliber quarterback in the league. He’ll have to play that way on Saturday. It’s win or go home, and the Eagles have no interest in stopping all this fun.

Prayer To The Blessed Virgin (Never Known To Fail)

O most beautiful Flower of Mount Carmel, Fruitful Vine, Splendor of Heaven, Blessed Mother of the Son of God, Immaculate Virgin, assist me in my necessity. O Star of the Sea, help me and show me here you are my mother. O Holy Mary Mother of God, Queen of Heaven and Earth. I humbly beseech you from the bottom of my heart to succor me in my necessity (make request). There are none that can withstand your power. O Mary conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee (3 times). Holy Mary, I place this cause in your hands (3 times). Say this prayer for 3 consecutive days then you must publish and it will be granted to you. K.G.
