confess that I don’t know whether or not Larry Krasner will be a good district attorney. Hey, I thought Seth Williams would work out fine. I also thought trading Rick Wise for Steve Carlton was a monumental mistake. What I do know is that the near-hysterical reaction to Krasner’s removal of 31 people from the DA’s office is over-thetop. I tried to find out whether getting rid of 31 of your staff is unusual for an incoming DA. Couldn’t get the answer. But even the critics admit that a new district attorney is within his rights to make changes in his staff. To place the issue in context, firing 31 staffers amounts to about 10 percent of the staff Krasner found in place when he took office. Didn’t Krasner get elected on the promise that he would make sweeping changes? Even considering the 7-1 edge that the Democrats hold in registration in this city, Krasner, the Democrat, defeated his Republican challenger by a large margin. He ran on the premise that a cultural change was needed in the district attorney’s office. “I’ll rock the boat” is practically tattooed on his chest. If Krasner’s margin of victory means anything, he has a mandate to change the way the office of the district attorney operates.

Pea soup dinner among servings of neighborhood news By Bill Gelman SOUTH PHILLY REVIEW

M

ichelle Lawrence announced her candidacy for the U.S. House of Representatives to serve the First Congressional District of Pennsylvania on Monday at Yesha Fellowship Hall, 2301 Snyder Ave. She has resided in the district for more than 13 years, and is looking forward to bringing transformative change to the district through a platform based on “Service, Opportunities and Solutions.” Lawrence previously enjoyed a 28-year-career at Wells Fargo, which included serving as area president and senior vice president for the Greater Philadelphia retail region. She then founded Michele Speaks, LLC, a company that helps people realize

their worth, build wealth, embrace wellness and accrue wisdom by providing empowerment tools and special events. In terms of making the announcement on MLK Day, it tied in to the fact that Lawrence was particularly moved by a quote from Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s book “Stride Toward Freedom: The Montgomery Story.” “Human progress is neither automatic nor inevitable. Even a superficial look at history reveals that no social advance rolls in on the wheels inevitability. Every step towards the goal of jus-

tice requires sacrifice, suffering, and struggle; the tireless exertions and passionate concern of dedicated individuals …This is no time for apathy or complacency. This is a time for vigorous and positive action.” … State Rep. Jordan Harris will be at the South of South Neighborhood Association building, 1901 Christian St., tomorrow night (Jan. 18) from 6 to 7:30 p.m. for a Rap with the Rep session. This will be an informal event where residents can come out and voice issues and concerns on various district issues. For more information, visit facebook.com/

PHILLIES: Team stars use Day of Service to support local youth clinic

<<Continued from page 1 kids are off, we were able to help create a clinic where we joined some of the other events that we have for this week to help promote our baseball season.” Kids from the RBI program were divided into three groups: one for pitching, one for hitting and another for fielding. Morandini spent most of his time rolling ground balls to the children and teaching them how to properly field a ground ball and throw to first. At the hitting station, Nick Williams and Rhys Hoskins switched off helping players work on their swings by lobbying them baseballs to hit. Williams, who despite being an outfielder was actually recruited as a pitcher, also spent some time at the pitching station helping students work on their deliveries. “That’s something where it kind of brings them back to their days when they were kids,” said Joaquin. “[The players] come down here and shed some light and some knowledge on baseball to help these kids and get them pumped because soon enough they’ll be out on the field.” A few former RBI players were involved at the event as well, helping at each station. “The more repetition you get, the more your body’s adjusted to taking grounders; you’ll know how to swing the bat, the more you’ll know how to pitch,” Joaquin told the young players upon the conclusion of the session. “What you do in practice is what you do in the game. So when you take the field, whether it’s at practice or if you’re just working out at a clinic like this, work hard. That stuff will translate on the field when you get down there.” Monday’s baseball clinic was the first in a string of what the Phillies are calling #BackInTown events being held this week. One of the week’s main purposes, aside from giving back to inner-city youth, is to promote the beginning of the Phillies season, which will begin March 29 against the Atlanta Braves. Pitchers and catchers will report for Spring Training on Feb. 14 and the full team will report Feb. 19. After the clinic, Williams and Morandini signed autographs for the kids. “We’ll see you guys out there on the field in a couple of months,” said Joaquin. “It will get warm, don’t worry about that. It will get warm!”

he road to Super Bowl LII is coming through South Philly. In terms of Philadelphia pro sports, this is about as exciting as it gets, besides, of course, bringing home a world championship parade. Sunday, at 6:40 p.m., all eyes will be glued on Lincoln Financial Field, 1 Lincoln Financial Way. It’s going to be a classic battle between the No. 1 Philadelphia Eagles and No. 2 Minnesota Vikings. This is not the first time the Birds have hosted a conference championship game. Many likely remember the 2004 game the most, as that was the year the Eagles defeated the Falcons 27-10 at the Linc, and advanced to face the New England Patriots in Super Bowl XXXIX. But we cannot forget about the 1980 season when the Eagles hosted the hated Dallas Cowboys in the title game at Veterans Stadium. More than 70,000 fans were in attendance to see the likes of Wilbert Montgomery (pictured), Ron Jaworski, Harold Carmichael, Bill Bergey, Tony Franklin and coach Dick Vermeil defeat the Cowboys, 20-7. Montgomery rushed for 194 yards in the game, including a 42-yard touchdown run. The former running back finished the season with a team best 778 rushing yards and eight rushing touchdowns. Come Sunday, the likes of Nick Foles, Fletcher Cox, Jay Ajayi, Alshon Jeffery, Brandon Graham and others will look to follow in the footsteps of Montgomery and company. tudents at Eliza Kirkbride School, 1501 S. 7th St., have visions of a dream, more specifically Philadelphia Dreams. It’s the name of an in-the-works project in which the young artists will devise new ways to tell old tales, a recording of community and student writing and a mural, which will be dedicated at their Diversity Day festivities. Last week, during a special ceremony at City Hall, Principal Rebecca O. Julien and the Kirkbride team received word they were a grant winner of one of the largest arts programs operating in the district – the Picasso Project. Public Citizens for Children and Youth, Mayor Jim Kenney and Superintendent Dr. William Hite were also on hand for the big announcement. “Kirkbride School is thrilled to have received a Picasso Grant for the second year in a row! Last year’s eighth-grade students had an impactful experience being involved in the Picasso Project,” Julien said. “Students not only created a beautiful mural based on their American Dreams, but were able to participate in arts advocacy at City Hall. We envision that this year’s eighth-grade students will be empowered through their participation in the Picasso Project as well.” Kenney spoke at the event of the importance of art in city schools. “Arts education is a vital component of every child’s growth and well being,” Kenney said. John Taggart Elementary School, 400 W. Porter St., was awarded a grant for its Jasper at Taggart concept. The project is a collaboration with the Jasper String Quartet and Taggart music teachers, and will allow students to compose an original piece based on a work of literature. South Philadelphia High School, 2101 S. Broad St., also made the winners list for its “Little Shop of Horrors” project in which students will grapple with the challenges of living in an urban environment and with the questions of morality; they will learn about accountability, discipline and what it takes to succeed as a team as they prepare and perform the musi-

Stephen Girard School, 1800 Snyder Ave., is the other local school that received a grant, which is being put toward completing its Girard Community Mural. Kristy Katz, who is a kindergarten teacher at the school, talked about the project that will appear on the front of the building. “This is the third project that we have gotten funded, and I am grateful that we are given another opportunity to bring a school-wide project to the students of Girard,” Katz said. “This time, their work will permanently be on display, which will provide them with a sense of community for many years.” This marks the 15th year that Public Citizens for Children and Youth has offered arts grants for innovative arts education projects, partnering with committed teachers and arts and other community organizations. Since Picasso Project’s first year of operation in 2003,

the program has inspired more than 40,000 public school students across 163 district schools through small but strategic and highly-leveraged minigrants. The Girard project is expected to be a massive team effort, as Katz said the goal is to get all of the students – approximately 540 – involved with the mural’s creation, from initial sketches to the overall design and actual painting of it. “The most exciting part of the project for me will be our Art Day to celebrate the mural’s completion,” she said. “At the end of May, we plan to invite the students, their families and other community members to the school yard for a celebration of art. … We will use the mural and the Art Day to share the plans for a new schoolyard at Girard, and begin fundraising for it. We hope that including the entire community in the improvement of Girard will lead to stronger community bonds and com-

mitment. Ultimately, we are using the power of art to build community.” Kirkbride is a school in which many of the students are new immigrants and represent more than 30 ethnicities. The goal, through the art project, is to examine connections between our nation’s founding documents and immigrant stories from the students’ families, school and neighborhood. The large mosaic mural will be installed near the entrance. “Through this exploration we hope to encourage our students to explore, question, challenge each other and celebrate the emerging identities of these young adults,” Julien said. “Additionally, we hope that these discussions of identity, values and dreams will broaden the perspectives of our students, creating more understanding, empathetic citizens. The resulting mural will be a reflection of the emerging identities and dreams of our students and a visual representation to our

community.” The 54 eighth-grade students will work together on the multidisciplinary project, which will incorporate social studies, art and computer/technology classes. “Students will work from February through June exploring our nation’s founding documents, creating audio recordings of community interviews and recitations of original Philadelphia Dreams writings, and designing mosaics based on their research and story collection,” Julien said. The completed work will be unveiled as part of the annual Diversity Day festivities. Local legislators and community leaders are expected to attend the mural unveiling, which will include students presenting their writings on the project theme and process. The event will end with a communal meal of international foods from the many diverse cultures represented at Kirkbride.

Local resident takes on multiple roles in Holmes play Dan Hodge can be seen in Walnut Street Theatre’s stage adaptation of classic mystery By Tom Beck SOUTH PHILLY REVIEW

“I

Dan Hodge, Bill Van Horn, and Jered McLenigan in Ken Ludwig’s ‘Baskerville: A Sherlock Holmes Mystery’ at the Walnut Street Theatre.

play about 15 different people,” Dan Hodge said. “I like to tell folks that I definitely play the murderer, but that’s not giving anything away because I play, like, all of the major suspects.” ‘Baskerville, A Sherlock Holmes Mystery’ is the name of the play Hodge, a South Philly resident, is acting in, currently amid a month-long run at the Walnut Street Theater. “It’s an adaptation of the Sherlock Holmes novella ‘The Hound of the Baskervilles,’” said Hodge. “The adaptation was done by a playwright named Ken Ludwig, and he’s basically boiled it down to a version that can be performed with five actors.” The other actors involved are Ian Merrill Peakes, who plays Sherlock Holmes; Bill Van Horn, who plays Dr. Watson (Van Horn is also the play’s director); as well as Jered McLenigan and Sarah Gliko both of whom, like Hodge, play a variety of characters throughout the performance. “Ken Ludwig’s acclaimed stage adaptation of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s 1902 classic mystery, ‘The Hound of the Baskervilles,’ is full of intrigue and... huge laughs,” read a press release for the play. “The male heirs of the Baskerville line are being murdered one by one, and the renowned sleuth Sherlock Holmes, along with his trusted sidekick Dr. Watson, must work feverishly to crack the curse before it dooms the newest heir. Five talented actors, playing forty quirky characters, follow leads, unravel clues, hit dead-ends, and zigzag with the story until the shockingly funny conclusion.” Playing 15 characters can be a challenge for Hodge, but that’s fine with him. It’s a challenge he’s up for. “For me it’s a lot of fun,” he said. “Quick change comedies is kind of the loose term for them.” Hodge said he finds ways to differentiate each of the characters he plays. “With the characters that have larger impact on the story, that have more fruit to yield, I kind of make those characters, let’s say, closer to real people, and

the more kind of auxiliary the characters become the more you have kind of permission to get a bit more outlandish with them,” he said. “A lot of the truly down the ladder secondary characters are written in a very broadly comic style. So you’ve got a bit of permission to run and play. But with the ones that are more movers and shakers within the plot, I try to find ways to make them as real as possible but still differentiate them and in terms of physicality, in terms of voice in terms of approach.” Hodge grew up in Midland, Texas, and eventually moved to San Diego before settling in South Philly. He’s been here for the past 10 years. He called South Philly the “hippest place that I’ve ever lived,” which is impressive considering he lived in Southern California. “Once you get South of Washington it just becomes like a hornet’s nest of actors,” he said. “There are theater artists all over down here. So there’s always somebody around to run into on the street and have a lovely time [with]. I like it. It’s cozy, it’s homey. I know most of my neighbors. I like the houses. I like the way of life. I’m a big walker, Philly’s a very walkable city, and South Philly in particular. I head up through the Italian Market to go to the theater every day.” Hodge describes Baskerville as “a bit of a thrill ride” and called it “wildly entertaining.” He’s especially proud of the actors he gets to work with. “[The audience] can certainly expect to see five pretty stunning actors just operating at the top of their game,” he said. “I was once told by a friend of mine who’s also an actor in town that if you look around the room and you can’t find the weak link, you are the weak link. So I’ve been living in constant fear since this processed started.”

15-10 win over Falcons puts Eagles in bid for NFC crown Philadelphia will host the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday with the winner going to Super Bowl LII By Al Thompson SOUTH PHILLY REVIEW

D

on’t look now, but the Eagles are just four quarters away from punching their ticket to Minneapolis and Super Bowl LII. If the Eagles pull it off, it will be just the club’s third trip to the Big Game in franchise history. The top-seeded Birds (14-3) pounded out a 15-10 win over the No. 6 seed Atlanta Falcons Saturday at Lincoln Financial Field in the NFC Divisional Round and will face the No. 2 seed Minnesota Vikings on Sunday for the NFC championship (FOX 6:40 p.m.). The Vikings (14-3) beat the New Orleans Saints on a walk-off answered prayer, 61-yard touchdown pass from Case Keenum to Stefon Diggs. The Eagles-Falcons game also went down to a final play, at least for the visitors. Trailing 15-10 with 5:57 left in the fourth quarter, quarterback Matt Ryan, a Philadelphia native, took Atlanta from their own 24-yard line and drove all the way to the Eagles two-yard line with 1:05 left in the fourth quarter. But the Eagles defense stiffened, stopping the Falcons on a fourth and goal from the two when second-year cornerback Jalen Mills defended a throw from Ryan to Pro Bowl wide receiver Julio Jones to the corner of the end zone that effectively ended the game. After the victory, Mills talked about the play. “I knew when (No.) 11 broke the huddle, they were going to him,” said Mills, who finished with two passes defended and a tackle. “It’s fourth down, and you just know they’re going to get him the ball. I kind of ID’d the formation, both my safeties kind of called out the play as well. We were locked in. “It was kind of a double move,” continued Mills, describing Jones’ route on the final play. “He was acting like he was going to run a fade on me...we were tussling at the top of the route, Matt (Ryan) threw it and it got tipped up. I played it through his hands. I turned around to see where his hands were. They always teach you to play through the receiver’s hands, to put your hands in the pocket

of the (receiver’s) hands. That’s what I did.” The Eagles had four fumbles (two lost) and still won the game. The one thing the Eagles knew they couldn’t do is turn the ball over if they wanted to beat Atlanta. So on their first possession that is exactly what the Birds did. Torrey Smith drew a 42-yard pass interference call on cornerback Brian Poole on the opening play of the game on a bomb thrown by Nick Foles that seemed to get caught in the wind in mid flight. Then on first-and-10 at the Atlanta 33, running back Jay Ajayi lost a fumble after a six-yard gain. Atlanta drove 59 yards on 11 plays to score on a 33-yard Matt Bryant field goal to go up 3-0. Good luck stayed with Foles on the next drive as the Birds made it 63 yards on pass interference calls in the first quarter when Mack Hollins drew another pass interference call, this time a 21-yard penalty on cornerback Desmond Trufant. But another fumble killed the drive. This time it was a bad exchange between running back LeGarrette Blount and Foles. Blount recovered the ball, but the miscue resulted in a seven-yard loss and the drive fizzled. The Eagles scored the first touchdown of the game in the second quarter after a 14-play, 86-yard drive that ended with a one-yard run by Blount on fourth down. Tight end Trey Burton provided a great block on the score. The Eagles had a TD called back on the previous play when Foles again had a bad exchange, this time with rookie running back Corey Clement. The ball was recovered by Foles near the goal line. The quarterback lunged over the goal line and at first appeared to have scored. The play was reviewed and overturned. Jake Elliott missed the extra point clanking the ball off the left upright. The highlight of the drive was a wide receiver counter to Nelson Agholor that went 21 yards to the three-yard line. Later in the second quarter, the Eagles turned the ball over again after a fair catch was called for by Kenjon Barner on a 30-yard punt by Atlanta’s Matt Bosher. See EAGLES, page 20>>

8 things the Eagles need to win on Sunday

n the Minnesota Vikings, the Eagles see something of a mirror image of themselves: The offense is operated by a backup veteran, a journeyman of a quarterback (Case Keenum) who has marched the Vikings to this spot, one game away from the Super Bowl. Minnesota, a fully-loaded defense, makes big plays on special teams and plays tough, physical football. So if the Eagles are looking at themselves, and scheming a gameplan to beat a team that, essentially, matches the same skills, how do they win? EAGLES: Philly one game away from Super Bowl

<<Continued from page 18 Barner did not attempt to catch the ball. When it hit the turf, the ball took a freak bounce sideways and hit special teams ace Bryan Braman on his side as he was making a block. Atlanta took over on the Eagles 18-yard line. The Eagles committed two penalties before Ryan hit Devonta Freeman with a six-yard touchdown pass to make the score 10-6. Those would be the last points the Falcons would score. It would also signal a turn for the good in the way Foles was playing. In one of the most bazaar drives of the season, the Eagles stole three points when a sure interception thrown by Foles bounced off the lap or knee of cornerback Keanu Neal and right into the arms of Smith who turned it into a 20-yard gain. Foles then brilliantly hit Alshon Jeffery for a 15yard gain with one second left in the half. Elliott proceeded to convert a 53-yard field goal to make the score 10-9 at intermission. Foles who settled down after those errant throws, finished with a respectable 246 yards on 23-of-30 passing with no picks and a QB rating of 100.1. Foles talked about his play. “You know, I am very humbled to win this game and to be a part of this team, Foles said. “That’s

what it’s always been about. I know there was a lot of people against us this last week. Just answering questions, and just hearing about it. But the biggest thing about this is that is sports, that’s part of it. The biggest thing in our locker room is we believe in one another. Everyone believes, and that was shown on display tonight. The city of Philadelphia obviously believes because they were here and loud. So we are grateful for that. Honestly, it’s unbelievable to win this game and we are not finished. Head coach Doug Pederson said the team fed off Foles as he got more comfortable as the game unfolded. “Yeah, and probably with any offense and any team, I’m sure the Patriots feel the same way with (Tom) Brady, the way he goes, they feel that energy, and same way with us, Pederson said. “How ever your quarterback goes, you’re going to feed off of that, and you’re going to feel that energy and you’re going to feel that confidence. And that’s the way the team felt as the game wore on. The only scores of the second half with two field goals by Elliott who hit from 37 and 21 yards. But it was all the Eagles needed. Five-time Pro Bowl center Alex Mack talked about the Eagles defense. “It was a real good defensive front we were up against, Mack said. “I think we had some chances, had a couple shots. We knew they were going to be

up-the-field explosive kind of guys. We just needed to limit some of the negative plays and capitalize on some of the positive ones a bit more. It was tough for us to stay on schedule. We never got into the groove we wanted to. It was close. It’s tough to put your finger on what didn’t go quite right. The Eagles defense, led by Pro Bowl defensive tackle Fletcher Cox (seven tackles, a sack, two tackles for loss, two QB hurries) held the Falcons to 86 yards rushing as a team and Ryan to 22 of 36 passing for 210 yards, a sack and a QB rating of 86.6. “We played our type of football we’ve been playing all year, Mills said. “Guys were focused all week since the bye week...not knowing who we were playing but just competing at a high level, ones versus ones. Then going into this week of preparation, the energy level at practice was crazy. Guys were competing at a very high level, and I think that showed up here today. Eagles All Pro right tackle Lane Johnson talked about the crowd noise at the Linc. “Huge, huge, Johnson said with a big smile. “It was cold, it was frisky, we had guys and girls raising hell all night. It was the most energy I’ve seen in a long time here. Follow Al Thompson on Twitter @thompsoniii
