>`S 7\OcUc`ObW]\ `S[O`Ya To the Editor: As the inauguration of Donald Trump approaches, I have two questions for his supporters. Are you confident that your candidate possesses the character and qualities that are needed to lead our country in light of his recent denials of the intelligence agencies’ findings? At least 17 agencies concluded their investigations that Russia hacked the 2016 election with the intention of securing Trump’s win. (Finally, Mr. Trump admitted that Russia was behind the hacking but thinks that China

or another country were also involved.) Russia has, and always will be, a major threat to our national security. It is a fact that cannot be denied. It is a country ruled by a dictator who cannot and will not accept public scrutiny. Sound familiar? In addition, as a supporter of Mr. Trump, are you pleased with his recent disparaging remarks on Twitter with respect to a civil rights icon, Congressman John Lewis, who has served our country for more than three decades? Now more than ever, the U.S. needs to unite, but Mr. Trump continues to voice his derogatory

comments on Twitter that continue to inflame and infuriate Americans. If there is any hope at all for our country to survive a Trump presidency, Mr. Trump needs to grow a thicker skin and listen to the criticisms that he faces. He must realize that it is not necessary to respond to every negative remark that is issued by the media. (His disgraceful handling of the recent news conference is a topic for another day.) Finally, he needs to say farewell to his Twitter account. Carol A. Pasquarello South Philadelphia

Welcoming the change To the Editor: Here we go! If these words make it into print, by the time many of you read them, we will be only hours away from the inauguration of Donald J. Trump as the 45th President of the United States. Finally, after all the crooked dealings by the left, pre- and post-election, he will represent more than 300 million Americans at home and abroad. I find the possibilities fascinating! I’ve lived through some horrible presidencies, being almost 86 years old, and I want the doomsday crowd to calm down. Donald Trump is going to do just fine. If we survived eight years of [President Barack] Obama, adjusting to at least four under Trump should be a breeze. Hail to the chief!

“I pray to God that he makes the right decisions. I want him to conduct himself well, especially when he’s around world leaders.

I think he’ll do a good job, actually. He’s not a career politician, and I think his business background is going to serve him well.

I think his presidency will polarize the population more than his candidacy did. I think more people will believe fake news and that echo chambers will get worse.

t around 3 a.m. Sunday, the complainant was pulling her car into the garage of the Marine Club Condominiums on the 1100 block of South Broad Street when a masked man said “Give me your stuff. Ignoring him and the rifle-like gun that he had, she drove to the third level, with a red car pulling up behind her, authorities said. The same male exited the vehicle and broke her window, striking her with the weapon and pulling her from the car. He swiped her cell phone while a female accomplice went inside the automobile to remove her handbag. The two then sped off, with the make and model unavailable at press time. The complainant, who was not injured, described the male as black and 5-foot-10; having a medium brown complexion and a medium build; and wearing a dark jacket and faded blue jeans; and the woman as black; having a large build; and wearing black tights. As the new executive director of Theatre Philadelphia – the first time anyone has held this role in the organization’s six-year existence – the 35-year-old, Cheltenham native has the task of getting fresh eyes on the arts as it’s certainly become a niche following. So what’s the plan to attract young, fresh digital minds to an analog event – on a shoestring budget? We ask Goldenberg that and more in this sit down for our sister publication PW.

You talk about marketing. How much of targeting will be considered depending on what type of show is in a theatre to a certain group or demographic? People want to see stories that reflect them, however I think people at their core want to be entertained and are open to seeing things that don’t look exactly like their lives. A lot of times an entry point can be here’s a play that is representative of your life, but that’s just a point of entry. But it’s creating that culture of theatre coming off What would you say is the task you’re that is what we’re passionate about here. most excited to tackle in your new role It should allow for reflection and entertain. If we can do that we’ll certainly grow our as executive director? From a generation standpoint, I think community [of passionate theatre-goers]. [Theatre Philadelphia] is doing really well. I think where we’re not keeping up is gener- What’s the plan at a grassroots level to ating audiences and making sure that we are get that younger, student age person to

Most people would rather spend $20 on a movie ticket than spend that on theatre and in large part because previews and other hype surrounding a particular film. With the theatre not having that same luxury, what’s the thinking on changing that mindset? It’s not about cost, it’s about value anytime you’re going to spend money ... there is an experience, a quality to the theatre. I recognize that [cost] may be a barrier for people but sometimes that’s an excuse. If you’re going to spend $20 at a bar, you can spend $20 on a play. Also, a lot of our theatres have access programs and generous [philanthropists] that help to reduce ticket prices and other discounts. Also recognizing too that at its core the people you are coming to see are professionals that do this for a living. It’s appreciation as much as it is entertainment. What will you say is the most daunting task for you and for Theatre Philadelphia heading into 2017? It’s a few things that are interconnected to be honest. The big thing is getting all of the theatres and artists to come together around initiatives and ideas. We have to figure out what those things are that are going to get people excited and want to collaborate on together. From there, it’s testing out these different initiatives to see what worked and how we can improve on it. We’re really in a startup world right now and we have a couple of programs but we need to have more. We don’t necessarily have the resources to try a whole bunch of stuff, so it’s also being strategic about the work that we do. At the end of the day, the theatre isn’t a lost thought in Philadelphia, it’s actually thriving with great shows and content. It’s up to us here [at Theatre Philadelphia] to convey all the great work that is being done behind the scenes to put on these great performances. A>@ Comment at southphillyreview.com/news/features.

He was inducted into the Philadelphia Music Alliance Walk of Fame in 1993. Mr. Greco also spent four years touring with the Benny Goodman Band, and would go on to enjoy a highly successful solo career. One of his more noteworthy performances came during the 1960s, when he was part of the First Command Performance with The Beatles at the Prince of Whales Theatre. Like with many of the other famous South Philly crooners, Mr. Greco’s musical talents would become his ticket around the world. While the visits back home were rare, he certainly made the most of them. During a January 2009 visit, his first in 16 years, Mr. Greco stopped by the old South Philly Review office at 12th and Porter streets. While he was in town to do a show with his wife, Lezie Anders, this neighborhood tour would serve as a stroll down memory lane to where his story began — his childhood home on the 2000 block of South Chadwick Street. So what’s the plan to cultivate more passionate followers of the theatre and to create more involvement within the various neighborhoods and communities here in Philadelphia? [Laughs] That’s the big question that I am trying to answer; give me time I’m just one week in! The content that we are putting on stage, we are telling stories from all different backgrounds and all different walks of life. There are so many people creating new [performances] that we are seeing a more diverse pool of stories that are being told. So it’s our job to really sell in these stories and make sure people know ... but it also comes down to a bit of that teaching 101 mentality in that sometimes we need to better in explaining the experience in seeing a live play or that there are affordable tickets because there are misconceptions. It’s not a dumbing down, but providing great education and insight to help people decide. We need to get more sophisticated and advanced in our marketing techniques. People are on screens all day long, so how we convey our product to them and through what medium is really important.

explore Theatre Philadelphia? Specifically inner-city kids that may not even think that this is for them? A lot of our independent theatres have [discounted] student ticket offerings and internship programs that they’re actively doing. For me, it’s making sure that these theatres have the right infrastructure to reach these students and also there’s been a lot of talk about trying to get students to stay here after high school and especially college, so it’s getting involved in theatre presentations in high schools and universities and it’s something we have been talking about, but at this point as a theatre community it’s not all packaged together.

the Phillies Reviving Baseball in Inner Cities initiative. As a tenured partner with the organization, the Philadelphia Area Chevy Dealers want those ambitious youngsters, who also engage in educational and vocational programs at Howard’s eponymous venue, to feel confident about their postsecondary education possibilities, leading Kelley Kelly, president of the Philadelphia Area Chevy Dealers, to flash a warm smile in presenting the five-figure endowment. “We’d been talking about this for months, Kelly said of her employer’s enthusiasm for building up the esteem for the building, which has already merited honor as a source of inspiration. “This facility is such a great place, too, so being that this is the Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service, we wanted to be true to his message of believing in yourself. That doesn’t seem too hard for people who live here because Philadelphians are tough people, and they know how to persist. We expect the same from these children. Kelly, who added that the Philadelphia Area Chevy Dealers respect the workings of the center so much that they are hoping to hold board meetings there, moved among the stations for hitting, fielding and pitching instruction, proud to be one of the instrumental voices in securing the first college scholarships for Phillies MLB Urban Youth Academy participants. Making the trek from Southwest Philly, Brandon Gooding and mom Aneesah Evans greatly appreciated the immediate display of camaraderie and will look to the future to see if they can be the beneficiaries of additional funds. “I absolutely love the Phillies, the matriarch gushed, reflecting on days cheering for outfielder/first baseman Von Hayes. “Everything that they’re doing for our children is just what Dr. King would have wanted in that they’re looking to and succeeding at being a light to our future generations of leaders. That’s especially important when you realize how many inner-city youths are benefiting. EVANS’ EIGHT-YEAR-OLD DESCENDANT gleefully caught throws and fielded ground balls, hurling them back to his RBI facilitator with strong left-handed efforts. Having learned about the RBI brainchild through their house of worship, Sharon Baptist Church, they have delighted in being two-year presences in the program. “I really like that I can get better at hitting the most, Brandon said of the skill

that Quinn helped the day’s attendees to improve on by watching them take cuts off a tee. “I want to continue that because it’s so much fun to run around the bases and score. His mother noted that four youths from their church consistently participate in the program, and she hopes that regardless of how people become aware of the option, which has aided numerous South Philadelphians, they should maximize its components, including the chance to gain assistance for their collegiate studies. “Who knows what the costs of a college education will be when Brandon, his peers, and kids younger than them are ready for that time in their lives? Evans pondered. “Every little bit helps in this day and age, and I hope what Chevy is doing leads others to consider being there for these children, too. One such South Philadelphia alumnus of the RBI legacy, Dom Raia, loved his opportunity to help his eventual successors on the mound to fire crisp fastballs, revealing “I see potential in everyone. “The RBI program gives you so many opportunities to grow, the 2011 graduate of Girard Academic Music Program and Chestnut Hill College degree holder said as his charges worked on their grips.

“I’m fortunate to have been able to have done so much through my time involved with it, so it’s good to spread the message that being an RBI player is going to open doors for you. The Girard Estate native fondly recalled advancing to the RBI World Series in ’10, the year that he also hurled a no-hitter for the GAMP Pioneers, and intended to mention his joy as a first-time promoter of the resources to his groups. Quinn, who debuted with the Phillies last Sept. 11, also relished the chance to encourage immersion into his vocation, feeling that no matter whether Monday’s participants follow in his footsteps by scoring a Major League Baseball roster spot, they will succeed in life if they retain belief in their goals. “Have a dream, and nourish it, he said, N Whitman Branch 200 Snyder Ave. 215-685-1754 adding that the MLK Day of Service, Jan. 20: SmART Readers, 3:30 p.m. named for the civil rights leader slain 49 Jan. 21: Family Storytime, 11 a.m. years ago this April 4, should serve as an Jan. 21: Yoga for Everyone, 1 p.m. eternal source of inspiration. “You never Jan. 21: Video Games, 2:30 p.m. know what will happen if you give yourJan. 23: Read to a therapy dog with self a chance, but it’s obvious what’s goPAWS for Reading, 6 p.m. ing to happen if you don’t. A>@ Jan. 24: Playgroup, 10:30 a.m. Jan. 25: Yoga for Kids, 5:30 p.m. Contact Staff Writer Joseph Myers at jmyers@ Jan. 25: Yoga for Adults, 6:30 p.m. A>@ southphillyreview.com. focus on Twitter because this apparently is where the nation’s business will henceforth be conducted. The “swamp be drained, but who knew that the new cabinet would contain so many denizens of the swamp? A touch of brilliant strategy to employ some of the worst examples of the “Haves who prey on the “Have Nots? or is it merely an example of what we can call The Fifth Avenue Syndrome? Oh what, pray tell, you ask is The Fifth Avenue Syndrome? It’s just a catchy way of reminding us that our new leader once claimed, with astonishing insight, that he could shoot someone on Fifth Avenue and get away with it. So what better way to prove it than by not only not bothering to drain the swamp, but sinking us a bit deeper into its muddy ooze? If one really had brass gonads, one could claim that among your first tasks would be to build a wall and get Mexico to pay for it. Praise be, our new leader! His transition team has already alerted us that we, the taxpayers, will pay for the start of the wall, and get Mexico to pay for it later. If you think about it, it’s kind of a layaway plan if it works or just another example of a Fifth Avenue shootout without any consequences. It’s not as if the Republican Congress already hasn’t already seen the true path forward in exactly those terms. Their intention is to repeal Obamacare, but delay the effects for two years while they figure out how to replace it. Kind of another layaway plan that the new President will no doubt eagerly sign if only to keep one of his many campaign promises designed to Make America Great Again. The catch is for the greatness to really take hold, Republicans will have to figure out how to keep provisions such as covering members of the household until age 26 and not mess with the current prohibition against denying coverage to those with pre-existing conditions, while at the same time reducing premiums, and maintaining coverage for 20 million Americans. Perhaps the new president should’ve named the magician David Blaine as the architect of the new plan because Speaker of the House

Paul Ryan is no Blaine. Oh well, at least the Republicans were savvy enough to kick the can down the road another two years until after the next mid-term elections. The new president may be able to get away with shooting someone on Fifth Avenue, but history shows that voters don’t extend such privileges to congressional members of the party in power during mid-term elections, especially when their health insurance has been taken away. During this transition period (was there a transition period or did the new guy take control the day after he was elected?), there was a lot of arm twisting of major corporations to get them to back down from practices like price gouging and sending American jobs overseas. I confess that I was dazzled as corporation after corporation caved before the power of Twitter. In return, Boeing, General Motors, et al, received excellent PR as did the Presidentelect, and are free to focus on the new administration’s planned tax breaks for the one percent of Americans (otherwise known in Republican circles as “the job creators). In another skillful move, the new president was able to persuade the Republican Congress to back off its plan to gut the independent ethics committee. The tactic undoubtedly not only earned the new guy points with his working-class adherents, but enabled him to escape the fact that he himself has never submitted his tax returns for public scrutiny. A sleight of hand artist such as Blaine would be proud. Or maybe just another shot was fired on Fifth Avenue and no one noticed? So tomorrow the grand adventure begins. The new president and his pretty wife will look resplendent. The “crooked media will be forced to acknowledge his triumph. The inauguration will undoubtedly get better TV ratings than the new “Celebrity Apprentice. The Kremlin will watch on TV with a knowing smile. The Obamas and Clintons will force a smile and clap for the new guy. The protesters will fume. And on Fifth Avenue, a place will be reserved for the new president in case he ever shoots somebody just to prove a point. A>@

added depth. “I like how they speak to the complexity of human nature and how that can influence considerations of the durability of what we have and the burdens that we can face when we think that’s not fulfilling enough. While she reveres Simon, whose connection to the Walnut Street Theatre includes the 1999 world premiere of “Hotel Suite, for his ability to inspire audiences to think about their situations and journeys, Peakes posits that he is even more adept at encouraging the appreciation of comedy for its own sake. At a time when people strive to infuse meaning into everything, she likes that he can so easily “give people a night off from their lives. “It’s great to look to say something smart and compelling in your work, but there’s value in just helping people to laugh and take a break, Peakes said. “I know I’m loving the opportunity to be a part of this reminder of how fun it can be to let go of your cares for a couple hours. THE HAPPY HIRE recalled that enthusiasm for wanting to enjoy diversions via a text came courtesy of theater exposure while growing up in Baltimore. From pretend-

ing to accept an Academy Award to seeing shows in her home state’s Pumpkin Theatre, Peakes’ childhood offered ample proof that stage-based efforts could come to help her to carve out a career. “I absolutely loved so much of what I came in contact with because it was so beautiful to discover what the writers wanted to say and teach us about, the alumnus of DeSales University said. “At times, for anyone, I’d contend, it can be tough when you’re starting as a performer to know where you fit or might fit, but I think that the more you take in, the more you understand that theater makes you pretty diverse. Thanks in large part to her mother, a longtime English teacher, Peakes grew fond of William Shakespeare, and it was through the Pennsylvania Shakespeare Festival that her life and love for the stage began to blossom, as she met future husband Ian Merrill Peakes at the annual celebration that her alma mater hosts. “We moved to New York for, I think, just under a year, and he just kept getting work in Philadelphia and building area connections, and I had some connections, too, from the festival, she said. “It

took some convincing, but we moved to Philadelphia and enjoyed our existence as South Philly residents. With Bella Vista and Queen Village as their haunts, the now Garden State-based performers came into contact with a supportive community that greatly appealed to her enthusiasm for enjoying an existence filled with fraternizing. She especially revered her contemporaries’ ability to foster “normal lives that included not only explorations of their art but also interest in having families, which she and her Barrymore Award-winning spouse have done as the parents of eight-year-old Owen. They have easily made their boy proud through the accumulation of well-received credits, with the matriarch, who also has narrated more than 20 titles for Brilliance Audio, landing assignments through Arden Theatre Co.; Ambler’s Act II; The Folger in Washington, D.C; Malvern’s People’s Light; and New Hampshire’s Peterborough Players. “Our lives are a roller coaster, the Barrymore nominee said of the frequent travel involving in bringing scripts to life. “However, this is the path we’ve chosen, and, yes, there are ups and downs, but we are highly fortunate to be able to pursue

these aspirations.â€? Noting that not a second ends up wasted, Peakes will soon after the Walnut Street Theatre run head out on a national tour to back “Last of the Red Hot Lovers,â€? the seventh such show by the theatrical pioneer to extend beyond Philadelphia’s confines. The journey will find her traveling along the East Coast, with stops in California and New Mexico also on the docket. “It will be my first tour, so I’m thankful for the chance to extend my connection with this great show,â€? Peakes said. “There will be some challenges, but, again, I’m blessed to be in this position to explore my craft a bit more.â€? Lisa’s Sausage with Broccoli Rabe and Beans

Personable personnel

O

h, to be an at-home chef in winter! The possibilities to be a warm presence in someone’s life certainly increase during the more frigid months, so always consider yourself fortunate if you know or are someone who counts the kitchen as a favorite place this time of year. Lisa Fitzsimmons enjoys being one such gifted creator and elected to share her Sausage with Broccoli Rabe and Beans recipe. The primary protein component of this offering from the Packer Park resident will surely prove to be motivation for you to pig out and have the strength to brave the elements. The result promises to be so good that you might even hope that the world’s most famous groundhog, Punxsutawney Phil, sees his shadow two weeks from today, meaning six more weeks of winter.

F

rom 7 to 8:30 tonight, workers from Guinness will be at Bridget Foy’s, 200 South St., for the Queen Village location’s personalized pint night. Using an etching machine, the guests will customize patrons’ glasses for free following the purchase of a pint. Call 215-922-1813, or visit bridgetfoys.com. SPR

The Wild Burrito’s Avocado Fries

B

hroughout his professional journey, including affiliations with Heinz and Guinness, Joe Carpenter has valued the value that consumers place on having high-quality options. Especially aware of South Philadelphians’ allegiance to freshness and friendliness, the 42-year-old has become a connoisseur of delicious selections and a conveyor of cordial conversations by overseeing The Wild Burrito. “I absolutely love being able to have a location in this neighborhood, he said from the Pennsport spot that will turn a year old next week. “The connections are pretty special, and that helps us to have added confidence in our products. The Marconi resident, who helms a second site in Wildwood, explained that his other food and drink-related vocational stops, along with an interest in preparing meals, made him a receptive carrier of the bug that is business ownership. As his enthusiasm gestated, Carpenter began to see Mexican cuisine as a viable source of sustenance, with the New Jersey venture opening as a seasonal operation in 2012. Feeling he was missing out on an opportunity in his home state, he duplicated his delight in becoming a local presence and credits a simple creed for helping The Wild Burrito to succeed. “Being transparent is huge to us, Carpenter said of proceedings at the establishment, whose emphasis on patient preparation and compositional integrity comes through in the menu’s Wild Pledge. “We want everyone to be aware of how much we respect different tastes and preferences, too, which we acknowledge through the personalization of items. He explained that his space, which abounds in vegetarian and vegan dishes, with gluten-free quesadillas also available for patrons’ chewing pleasure, prides itself on being a purveyor of healthy products,

with customer Bridget Foy-Graven bearing witness to the validity of The Wild Burrito’s mission. “Many places lack in truly good choices, she said upon finishing a late lunch with her daughter. “Here, you know you’re getting food from people who know how to appeal to your interest in having filling yet consequence-free food. Carpenter further connects with consumers by aiming for ingenuity in composing his menu. That quest becomes apparent to tastebuds through an order of Original Avocado Fries, the recipe for which he chose to share. “I know of only one other place that has them, and I’d say ours are far superior, he said. “We’re very proud to feature them, and I’m happy to let a larger audience know how we do them. If you try to make them on your own, the process might take some time because of the attention you have to give to the avocados, but the results are definitely worth it.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22 to Jan. 19): Think carefully before speaking. Someone who asks for your opinion secretly wants you to affirm his or her ideas. When they discover you are not on their team, they will turn against you. It’s better to give noncommittal responses or pretend not to know enough about the issue. Lucky number: 324. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20 to Feb. 18): Be practical with your money. Stocking up on essentials will serve you better. Take advantage of sales on items you use regularly. Having a supply of these things will ease your financial burdens later. This frugal behavior sets a good example for your family. Lucky number: 926. PISCES (Feb. 19 to March 20): You’re determined to have something to show for your hard work. Developing expertise in a growing field will result in a raise or promotion. You

will enjoy studying with a demanding teacher who isn’t satisfied with mediocre work. You’re not a fast learner, but when you comprehend a lesson, you never forget it. Lucky number: 683. ARIES (March 21 to April 20): Putting money away for a rainy day will create a sense of security. Every time you have a choice between making a frivolous purchase and saving cash, choose the latter. You can still indulge your sensual side with luxury purchases that give longterm fulfillment. Lucky number: 280. TAURUS (April 21 to May 20): Spending time with loved ones will lift your spirits. You’ve been devoting lots of energy to helping others, and you feel tired and downhearted. Your nearest and dearest will be happy to cheer you up, so get together for some mindless entertainment. Isolating yourself from the crowd is the worst thing you could do. Lucky number: 586. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20): Be totally ethical in business practices. The temptation to cut corners will be strong, but you should play by the rules. There is a good reason a set of procedures has been put into place. If someone complains about how long it is taking for you

balance as it looked to hit double digits in the win column. Fans of disciplined basketball might have felt compelled to cover their eyes in the opening stages, as the quick pace from the hosts and the guests yielded little flow. With interior opportunities resulting in tight defense coupled with confounding misses, the Knights took to the perimeter, with three-point daggers by Brown, Spann and senior forward Moussa Gandega helping them to generate a 21-14 lead after the first quarter. Its successor played out the same way, but on the defensive side, the adolescents struggled for consistency, especially when reaching for rebounds, leading Funaro to feel they should have entered the locker room with a wider margin. “I want for you to lock it down because there are too many lanes opening up for them, he observed. “We need to bring up the intensity no matter who has the ball, though. Let’s get at them and make this all about coming through in front of our fans.

MANY LOCAL SPORTS aficionados have seen enough interesting matchups that they know full well that “Anything can happen in the pub. Public League encounters have become notorious breeding grounds for odd circumstances, and the third quarter brought one such head-scratching occasion when it appeared that the visitors’ score was not correct, leading to cheers and jeers as the referees looked to make sure all went smoothly. “It is weird how stuff can play out when you’re playing a game that’s pretty important for both teams, Funaro said of his squad, which entered last week’s game with a 6-1 league mark, and its opponents, a 3-4 Division D member coveting consistency. “In this division, too, it’s amazing how little things can be major factors in determining the outcome of a game. As High School of the Future’s coaching staff grumbled about the scoreboard, Knights’ supporters began to wonder if

hen learning ahead of last season that his junior varsity basketball players at Philadelphia Performing Arts: A String Theory Charter School would earn varsity status for the 2016-17 season, Eric Funaro expected that the leap would inspire hard-fought efforts, particularly in tight contests. The coach continued to call the boys’ hoopsters heroic Jan. 12 as they gutted out an 82-72 victory over High School of the Future at the Guerin Recreation Center. “With each game, I believe we’re becoming more of a team, he said from the Newbold venue. “We’re realizing what can happen when we stay together and remain accountable to one another. Funaro and his Center City-based ballers received ample support at the homecoming contest, with fans hoping to witness yet another special afternoon from star Anthony Brown. A chief factor in helping the Knights to race to a tie for first in the Public League’s American Division coming in, his scoring touch has certainly impressed Funaro, but another element possesses more potency. “I think his presence on both sides of the ball is key to causing a lot of confusion for teams, the Girard Estate resident said of the junior sharpshooter and ball hawk. “Some guys like to score primarily while other guys get a kick out of playing exceptional defense. Then there are kids like Anthony. “We were definitely excited to jump to varsity because we knew we’d have to ask for more from ourselves, Brown said to a nod from fellow scoring threat Tyler Spann. “If you’re not willing to give more at this level, why are you even bothering to play for a team? Brown, who resides in East Passyunk Crossing, has become Funaro’s undisputed scoring king, but plenty of teams have faltered, no matter their amateur or professional status, because of a failure to find secondary marksmen. In last week’s contest, the home crew wanted to prove its

their hardwood heroes would be able to sustain their focus, with discussions on the proper tally appearing to throw them off. Fortunately, though, just as the adversaries made their advance, the division leaders showed why the push toward the playoffs will be exciting when Guerin is the setting. “I’d say our energy is the strongest part of this team, Spann said “We were able to feed off each other and the fans, too, and I think those are what got us this win. A thrilling final quarter saw the Southwest Philly resident notch eight of his 21 points, with Brown going off for 12, including six free throws, as the Knights completed the never-dull wire-to-wire victory. “This is three strong fourth quarters in a row, Funaro, who learned about how to close out games when playing for coach Art Kratchman at Girard Academic Music Program, said. “Like with every game, we’re going to find some things that you would have wanted to have done better, but this is a nice effort, and it’s proof that we’re growing as a varsity team. “We have to keep the intensity up no matter the score, moment, the opponent, whatever, Brown, who pushed his league scoring average to 28.6 thanks to a 29-point display, said. “We’re not happy just with being a good team in the regular season because we want to do well in the playoffs, too. Funaro recalled how Kratchman, still patrolling the bench for the Girard Estatebased institution, preached becoming stronger as February would beckon and intends to make the march to next month an exploration of the Knights’ might. “We’ll see who we are, the coach, whose club defeated Esperanza 74-52 on Tuesday and who hosts Franklin Learning Center today at 3:30 p.m., said. “The top five team in our division make the playoffs, and we think we’ll be in the thick of it all and ready to make some noise. A>@
