ncle Nunzi tells me that my male readership is dwindling. I am not sure how he knows this. I just know that he knows. Uncle hints that my failure – and he lets me know that he does consider this slippage my failure – to attract male readers may be because of low testosterone levels. I am also not sure how he knows that my testosterone levels are low. I just know that he knows. I must add as a cautionary note that I find my low testosterone level is very advantageous in this time of inappropriate male sexual behavior. To my fellow males: Forget the testosterone shots, you’ll only get into trouble. But I digress. So, in an effort to widen my appeal – and more importantly – to silence my irksome uncle, I am writing this column to commiserate with my fellow males. … Hey guys, do you find as I do that while you and your wife are shopping at the supermarket, you lose her somewhere between the peanut butter and the frozen waffles? Be honest. She can’t read your mind. If she could read your mind, your marriage would likely be on its last legs anyway, and you’ve probably tried to lose your wife in many places. And not just in the supermarket. I write this column after a Saturday afternoon shopping with my wife in our local See CARDELLA, page 9>>

Dominating NFC Championship win over the Vikings has Eagles fans excited for Super Bowl LII By TOM BECK SOUTH PHILLY REVIEW

Defensive end Vinny Curry hoists the George Halas Trophy after the Eagles won the NFC Championship Game against the Minnesota Vikings, 38-7, Sunday night at Lincoln Financial Field.

oing into Sunday night’s NFC Championship game against the Minnesota Vikings, tailgating Eagles fans were confident the Eagles would pull off the win. A strong showing by the defense, most felt, would overcome a potentially lackluster performance by quarterback Nick Foles, and the Eagles would advance to their third Super Bowl in team history. “We’re going to smoke the Vikings,” said tailgater Ryan Sharkey, who predicted a 24-14 Eagles win. “The defense is gonna kill it.” “I was thinking more like 24-17,” said Sharkey’s friend Kyle Van De Wyngaerde. “I feel like Foles is going to be there but the defense is going to be dominant. Fletcher Cox is going to be in their face all day.” Others weren’t so confident in Foles. When asked to rate his confidence in Foles, John Schwartz Jr., who came from North Wales to go to the game, said he’d rate his confidence in the Eagles’ backup QB as a 3/10. That’s not good. “It’s not good at all,” he said. “He’s not good at all either, but our defense is good. Our defense is a 10/10.” Not even after an encouraging display against the Falcons? “He’s not going to improve upon that,” Schwartz Jr., who predicted a 20-16 Eagles victory, said. “That’s his ceiling. That’s what we get out of him hopefully.” His tailgating companion and father, John Schwartz Sr., was a little more gracious, giving Foles a 5.5. The senior Schwartz predicted a 19-16 Eagles victory. Op-Ed What’s the best way to choose a school board?

Mail

e-mail

South PhillyReview

E D I TO R I A L C A R TO O N

B

y this time, almost every family with school-aged children is aware there has been a major change in the governance of Philadelphia’s public school system. On Nov. 16, the five-member School Reform Commission voted to abolish itself. For the last 17 years, thanks to PA Act 46, the SRC has had almost unlimited power to close schools, permit or cancel charters, sign or not sign workers’ contracts, and generally exercise authoritarian control of the entire school system. They never had to answer to the citizens of Philadelphia for any decision. Citizens could attend meetings, demonstrate, make speeches and ask questions, but that was it. Unlike every other school district in Pennsylvania, the parents and citizens of this city were denied any decision making power over their own schools. Act 46 was written with only Philadelphia in mind. It was a takeover by the state of a school district that lawmakers judged to be “in distress. Anyone who paid attention during the first few years of the SRC witnessed unprecedented upheaval as they experimented with one governing model after another. They tried education management organizations, charter schools and other privatization models that split the district into numerous subsections with different rules, little to no oversight, and subject to arbitrary changes. William Hite is the third appointed superintendent, and his contract will extend beyond the SRC. All the while, school taxes were levied and funds spent with absolutely no accountability to the people who paid the bills. All that is about to change. Mayor James Kenney just announced a panel of 13 city residents to nominate a list of 27 candidates from which the mayor will appoint a nine-member school board. The nominating panel includes: parents, educators, a union president, a pastor and one former SRC member. Once they arrive at a list of candidates, the mayor will, with input from City Council, make the final selections. The new school board will train for several months and then take over when the SRC departs in July. Two questions: How can we make the new school board more democratic and work more efficiently? When the Education Clause was written into our state constitution, the legislature created a public system of education dependent on locally elected school boards. The very word “public indicates management by a publicly elected board. With an appointed board, it raises the legal question of “equal protection under our Constitution.

Every other school district in the state has an elected school board. Under our city charter, so far, only the mayor has the power to make the final decision of who may sit on the board. Democracy matters. An elected school board directly responsible to the public for managing the schools is more efficient than an appointed board. The issues of efficiency and competence are what led to the state takeover in the first place. So why would we return to that same failed model? How do we make this change to a more democratic form of school governance? We need a charter change first of all. We need to set up a system where candidates can cross-register in both parties and make their qualifications public to be elected to an unpaid position. There would be no political involvement or influence. There would be set term limits. All school board meetings would be open to the public. There would be total transparency and direct accountability to the people for all decisions. Regardless of who controls the Philadel-

phia schools, this does not take the state off the hook for properly funding the district. The U.S. Department of Education has reported Pennsylvania’s school funding system is the most unequal of all 50 states. The state must fix this unfair funding formula that discriminates against low-income children, especially in poor urban areas such as Philadelphia. A review of the charter school law and other back-door voucher laws that take money from public education is also needed. The city must also take financial ownership of its school system. The mayor claims he is taking full responsibility for how our schools are managed. He must share that responsibility with City Council and the new School Board. But none of this matters if we who live, work and send our children to school in Philadelphia do not demand accountability from our elected officials. We can and we must demand a charter change that puts Philadelphians in the driver’s seat. Our city; our schools; our voice. Gloria C. Endres

Philly among 20 cities still in the hunt for Amazon HQ By Bill Gelman SOUTH PHILLY REVIEW

P

hilly is still in the running for Amazon’s second headquarters, with the Philadelphia Navy Yard, 4747 S. Broad St., being one of the areas under consideration should the city win the bid. Schuylkill Yards and uCity Square are the other areas being considered. Amazon reviewed 238 proposals from across North America, including Canada and Mexico. New York City, Los Angeles, Boston, Newark, N.J., Denver, Dallas and Pittsburgh are some of the other cities Philadelphia is competing against. Mayor Jim Kenney released a statement last week in response to Philadelphia being one of the remaining cities still under consideration. “Philadelphia’s inclusion in Amazon’s Top 20 potential locations for

HQ2 is an exciting milestone for the city. We are thrilled at today’s announcement, and look forward to working with Amazon’s team on the next steps of this process to further highlight all that Philadelphia has to offer,” he said. Amazon, of course, has been extremely busy considering all of the potential bidders. “Thank you to all 238 communities that submitted proposals. Getting from 238 to 20 was very tough – all the proposals showed tremendous enthusiasm and creativity,” Holly Sullivan of Amazon Public Policy said in a statement. “Through this process we learned about many new communities across North

America that we will consider as locations for future infrastructure investment and job creation.” In terms of the next phase, according to the release, Amazon will work with each of the candidate locations to dive deeper into their proposals, request additional information and evaluate the feasibility of a future partnership that can accommodate the company’s hiring plans as well as benefit its employees and the local community. Amazon expects to make a decision in 2018. …. The Philadelphia Police Department sent out a Tweet last week advising residents not to make it easy

EAGLES: Fans out in force for NFC title game; ecstatic for Pats rematch

<<Continued from page 1 The Schwartzes arrived in the parking lot of the Wells Fargo Center at 10:45 a.m., but weren’t let in until the gates opened at 11:30 a.m. “We started drinking beer, but I’ve been pacing myself,” said Schwartz, Jr. “It’s going to be crazy, man. It’s going to be exciting.” The scene inside Xfinity Live! was just as boisterous as it was in the parking lots, with fans eating, drinking and watching the Patriots-Jaguars game to kill time until the Eagles game started. The crowd cheered against the Patriots, make it clear that if the Eagles moved on, they’d prefer to play Jacksonville. At kickoff the concourse was packed and it was virtually impossible to move without bumping into fellow fans. Only one Vikings fan could be spotted inside the building, who was often shown on the NBC Sports Arena screen and subsequently booed. After the game, it was clear that many fans were right about the defense, but wrong about Foles, who finished the game 26 for 33 with 352 yards, three scores and zero interceptions. “Nick Foles really showed up when we needed him to,” said Eagles fan Brandon Weaver. “I was very happy about that. I wasn’t really sure what to expect going into this game. I was

thinking about betting on either side, but I really didn’t want to so that’s why I didn’t bet. As a Birds fan I was just really happy to be out here and very happy when Nick Foles showed up and performed tonight.” How did fans feel about taking on the Patriots, a team with arguably the best quarterback/ head coach combination of all time, in the Super Bowl? “The Patriots don’t underestimate nobody,”

said Mike Jones of North Philly who was excited for the 2005 Super Bowl rematch, “We’re going to whoop their ___. We’re going to give them payback.” “All we have to do is get pressure on Brady and we’ll be good,” said Birds fan Nick Fiore. “One thing I will say: Rocky lost to Apollo Creed the first time. Remember that. “And then he came back and beat him the second time.”

They crossed the gateway to South Philly

W

hat would we do without the Walt Whitman Bridge? Think about it. New Jersey residents, for a small $5 fee, travel across the green-colored structure regularly. It provides a direct link to those heading to the Linc for a Philadelphia Eagles home playoff game. For others, it’s the preferred route to get to and from work - even when there is bumper-tobumper traffic. Last year marked the 60th anniversary of this massive steel structure that weighs more than 57,000 tons. The bridge officially opened to traffic on May 16, 1957. The pictured opening celebration included students from the former Stella Maris Elementary school and pedestrians walking across the length of the bridge. Today, with seven lanes of traffic, walking close to 12,000 feet – the length of the bridge – from Gloucester, N.J. to South Philly, or vice versa, sounds like an exhausting task compared to driving. For those wondering how long it took to build the Walt Whitman Bridge – named after the famous poet – the Delaware River Port Authority website lists August ’53 as the date construction started. TOM BECK/South Philly Review

Duffy String Band captain Jake Kudrick, who just turned 12, stands in front of pictures of his father, Ted, who had been Duffy’s captain from 1985 until his death in October.

Coming together the only way they knew how 12-year-old Jake Kudrick filled his father’s shoes to become youngest Mummers Parade captain ever By Tom Beck SOUTH PHILLY REVIEW

T

his past New Year’s Day, the Philadelphia Mummers Parade welcomed its youngest captain in history: 11-yearold Jake Kudrick. For the past three generations, the captain of Duffy String Band always passed down the captainship to his son. Thus, it was always the plan for Ted Kudrick, who had captained the band since 1985, to one day pass down the role to his son Jake. Tragically, that moment came far sooner than anyone in the band would’ve liked.

On Oct. 19, at which point the plan for the 2018 parade was mostly put into place, Ted died from a heart attack at age 52. “We had almost everything done at that point,” said Katie Foley-Anastasia, a drummer in Duffy. “We had to mourn and then we had to fix everything to make the show.” At first, there was brief uncertainty about what to do. “We’re out there competing and we’re out there to win,” said Colleen Kudrick, Jake’s mom and Ted’s wife. “If somebody came and said ‘is counting on an 11-year-old really the way we want to go?’ I certainly would have understood it, but everyone was in his

corner. Everyone was behind him, and he really fed off of that. So that was it. Jake was captain. “He was a professional,” said Bill Rhoda, who plays the baritone saxophone in Duffy. “He jumped into an amazing professional role. He set aside his own personal feelings and he said alright this is for everyone who’s around me and he went into it 100 percent.” The title of Duffy’s 2018 parade theme was “Wiz Wit,” which largely centered around the Wizard of Oz. Initially, Jake was meant to be the Mayor of Munchkinland, but later took on his father’s role as Professor Marvel during the parade upon his dad’s passing.

“He went out there with a lot of confidence on New Year’s Day,” said Colleen. “He’s an amazing little kid,” FoleyAnastasia said. “He really is.” When the parade was over, Duffy finished ninth in the string band results, which was the band’s highest finish in more than 50 years, according to Colleen Kudrick. In the string band captain’s results, Jake finished in a tie for fourth place. But Jake’s more proud of the entire band’s performance. “I think the band played amazing,” he said. “As you saw with him coming in fourth place against a bunch of adults, he’s a heck of a dancer, he’s a heck of

a performer,” said Colleen. “He’s out there with a smile on his face, and he really lifted all of us up behind him. It was very inspirational that he was going to get out there under the circumstances with his father passing away only two months before.” Right now, Jake is understandably a bit too young for many of the complexities that come with being a Mummers string band captain. But the plan is to have him grow into the role. “A lot of the captains have a lot of greater behind-the-scenes responsibility that he’s a little young for right now,” said his mom, “but we’ll give them to him in time.”

Eagles punch ticket to Super Bowl in Vikings rout By Al Thompson SOUTH PHILLY REVIEW

T

he Eagles are going to the Super Bowl. Against all odds, this group has already done what many creditable observers said was impossible. But the Eagles have accomplished the impossible. And to a man, no one in the Eagles locker room believes their job is finished, not by a long shot. The Birds won the NFC title without their league MVP quarterback, no Hall of Fame offensive tackle, no starting middle linebacker, no starting kicker or special teams ace and no Pro Bowl running back and kick returner...all lost for the season. Yet the Birds will face the New England Patriots Feb. 4 at U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis, Minnesota in Super Bowl LII with a chance to earn the first Lombardi Trophy in franchise history and the first NFL Championship in 57 years. The Eagles, three-point underdogs, crushed the Minnesota Vikings 38-7 at a jam-packed, raucous Lincoln Financial Field Sunday night after spotting the visitors a seven-point lead on the first drive of the game. “We’re going to the Super Bowl,” said head coach Doug Pederson when asked what his message was to his team after they filed into the locker room after the celebration with their fans. “We’re going to the stinking Super Bowl, and that’s all we need to know. I was just so proud of them for the season so far. We still have some unfinished business, obviously. But we’re going to pack our bags and head to Minneapolis.” After the Eagles won the toss and deferred, the Vikings went through the Eagles defense like a hot knife through butter. Minnesota tight end Kyle Rudolph caught a 25-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Case Keenum capping a nine-play, 75-yard drive. Before you took your first bite of your hot dog, it was 7-0. It looked like it might be a long day for the Birds. Little did anyone know at the time, that would be the only points the Vikings would muster for the entire game.

Kicker Jake Elliott makes a confetti angel during the celebration of the Eagles win over the Vikings, 38-7, in Sunday’s NFC championship game at Lincoln Financial Field. Quarterback Nick Foles, who has been under center since week 14 of the regular season for the injured Carson Wentz, and the Eagles moved the ball a bit on their opening drive, but on third and four at their own 42-yard line, a ball caught out of bounds by Trey Burton forced the Eagles to punt. It didn’t look any more promising for the Eagles when a 15-yard penalty was called on Sheldon Gibson while Marcus Sherels was trying to make a fair catch at the Vikings 14-yard line. From the 29-yard line, Keenum led Vikings to their 43-yard line. That’s where everything changed. On third and eight, Keenum dropped back to pass. The five-year pro out of Houston went to launch a rope to wide receiver Adam Thielen, but veteran defensive end Chris Long managed to get a few fingers on Keenum’s throwing arm, re-directing the pass right into the hands of cornerback Patrick Robinson who took off on a wild, thrilling 50-yard run for a touchdown. Fellow corner Ronald Darby laid a devastating block on running back Jerick McKinnon creating a lane to the end zone for Robinson. When Robinson in-

The Eagles will have their chance Feb. 4. tercepted the pass at midfield, the Eagles sideline was on his left. “I told the guys before the game that I was not going out of bounds when I

get a pick,” Robinson said at his locker after the game. “So I’m running down the sideline and I thought, ‘I can’t go out of bounds.’ So I looked to my right and

saw a lineman between me and a running back and thought that was the path. Darby was right there, he took out (No.) 21 (McKinnon) and I knew I was good to go.” Suddenly the score was 7-7. That touchdown was the start of 38 unanswered points scored by the Eagles. Foles was asked if Robinson’s picksix pumped up the offense. “I don’t think it just pumped up the offense, I think it pumped up the whole city of Philadelphia,” Foles said with an ear-to-ear grin at his post-game press conference. “I think everyone down Broad Street heard that, and I can only imagine what’s going on down on Broad Street right now. I know everyone is probably having a good time as they should. But anytime you get a picksix it’s a momentum change. [Patrick Robinson] made a play. It was the biggest play of the game and a momentum shift.” Foles and the offense came right back out and put on a textbook drive that went 75 yards on 12 plays taking up 6:20 minutes of clock and was capped off by LeGarrette Blount’s 11-yard touchdown run. Foles went on to throw three touchdown passes. The first was a 53-yard bomb to Alshon Jeffery on a broken play to give the Eagles a 21-7 lead with 1:09 left in the half. The Birds would tack on a Jake Elliott 38-yard field goal as time expired in the first half. Then Foles hit Torrey Smith on 41yard flea-flicker in the third quarter to make the score 31-7. Jeffery’s five-yard catch in the back of the end zone with 14:10 left in the fourth ended the scoring for the night and ended Minnesota’s season. Foles finished 26 of 33 for 352 yards, three touchdown passes, no interceptions and a quarterback rating of 141.4, the second-best figure in Eagles singlegame postseason history, behind Rodney Peete on Dec. 30, 1995, versus Detroit (143.3). He was sacked once. The Birds rushed 30 times for 110 yards as a team, Jay Ajayi accounting for 73 yards on 18 carries. Ajayi also caught three passes for 26 yards. Tight end Zach Ertz led the Eagles with eight catches for 93 yards. Jeffery See EAGLES, page 22>>

Off the ropes with the Blue Meanie Ex-ECW, WWE performer part of this weekend’s Icons of Wrestling event at the 2300 Arena By Bill Gelman SOUTH PHILLY REVIEW

W

hen Brian Heffron steps into the 2300 Arena, 2300 S. Swanson St., it triggers the old memories from his ECW – Extreme Championship Wrestling – days as the Blue Meanie. Yes, the wrestling name sounds like a cartoon character, but he was hardcore. There is even a banner hanging from the rafters that reads “2300 Arena Hardcore Hall of Fame Blue Meanie 2014.” He was inducted with the likes of 2 Cold Scorpio, Shane Douglas and Pitbull No. 1 and 2. Come Saturday and Sunday, the former member of the Blue World Order, who resides in South Philly, will be back at the old stomping ground talking with fans, signing autographs and selling his Blue Meanie action figure. The Icons of Wrestling Convention and Fanfest will include a who’s who of professional wrestling – the Four Horsemen, Wolfpack Sting, Jake “The Snake” Roberts, Jerry “The King” Lawler, Mean Gene Okerlund, Paul Orndorff, The Honky Tonk Man and many, many more. The event, which is taking place on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., coincides with four straight nights of WWE action at the Wells Fargo Center, 3601 S. Broad St. The biggie, of course, is going to be Sunday night’s Royal Rumble. “It’s going to be a fun time, especially for the wrestling fans in the City of Philadelphia, with all of the rich history,” Heffron said. The stars are coming in from all over the country, but for Heffron, who grew up on Shunk and Rosewood streets, it’s only a 10-minute walk. He has plenty of fond memories of the building, which has gone through its share of name changes over the years, including Viking Hall. As long as it’s standing, the Blue Meanie will be a part of its history. “It’s very flattering that they took the time to consider me for the Hardcore Hall of Fame,” he said. He was also there the night Mick Foley gave his farewell speech before departing to the WWE to perform as Mankind. Diehard wrestling fans recall the days when he teamed up with Stevie

BRIAN HEFFRON South Philly resident set to don signature hue at weekend wrestling event ahead of WWE’s Royal Rumble

Richards and Nova to form the BWO stable, which Heffron said was one of the coolest things he been part of during his wrestling career. “The night we debuted as the BWO was supposed to be a one-night parody,” he said. “The way fans reacted, it ended up being an eight-month run.” Several years later, fans at WWE events are still wearing the BWO Tshirts. “The fact that people remember it all

of these years later is flattering,” Heffron said. “I did something right.” Making it to the WWF, now WWE, was a pretty big deal, too. “Going to the WWF felt like a fan of the Philadelphia Phillies coming out of the crowd and taking a try at hitting the ball,” he said. His time with the “premier wrestling promotion in the world” even included a WrestleMania moment in his hometown. WrestleMania XV took place

at the First Union Center – now Wells Fargo Center – in 1999. Heffron, aka Bluedust at the time, was in the corner of Goldust, who wrestled Val Venis, Ken Shamrock and Road Dogg for the intercontinental championship. These days, Heffron is working as a trainer at the Paulsboro, N.J.-based Monster Factory, where he shares his knowledge about the mental and physical toughness that is needed to make it in the business. It includes character de-

velopment, life on the road and the politics of the wrestling world. “I will help anyone who is willing to listen,” he said. “Someone helped me along the way, so it’s only fair that I pay it forward and help someone else along the way.” The wrestling fan in Heffron is looking forward to seeing how Sunday’s Royal Rumble plays out. “It’s one of the four major pay-perviews in the company, so I expect them to pull out a lot of surprises, especially with the first-ever women’s Royal Rumble,” he said. The Internet has been buzzing that former UFC star Ronda Rousey is close to signing or has signed with the WWE. Maybe, just maybe, fans will finally get an answer on Sunday. “I think they are going to shock the world with Rousey making her debut,” Heffron said. “When you have the firstever women’s Royal Rumble, you want to make a big splash.” He also noted he wouldn’t be surprised if Nia Jax won the whole thing. In terms of the men’s Royal Rumble, Heffron is rooting for Finn Balor to be the last man standing. Heffron plans on watching the Rumble from the comforts of home, after he spends some time with the likes of “The Nature Boy” Ric Flair, Arn Anderson, Barry Windham, Tully Blanchard and JJ Dillon. “I’ve been fortunate enough to meet a lot of the guys,” Heffron said. “It’s going to be great to see the Four Horsemen again. It’s also going to be great seeing the NWO Wolfpack Sting with the red paint. He is one of the classiest wrestlers I ever met.” Before the convention gets underway, Heffron plans on starting his weekend at the 2300 Arena on Friday night for Tommy Dreamer’s House of Hardcore event. The two were part of the old ECW. “This is going to be a wrestling fan’s dream weekend,” he said.

Admission to the Icons of Wrestling Convention and Fanfest is $20 and does not include autographs or merchandise. For more info, including a pricing list, visit thecollectorfest.com/tickets.

EAGLES INSIDER

It’s time to give Doug Pederson his due

W

ANDY LEWIS/contrastphotography.com

Eagles head coach Doug Pederson celebrates after winning the NFC Championship Sunday at Lincoln Financial Field.

hen Philadelphia Eagles Chairman/ CEO Jeffrey Lurie hired Doug Pederson to be his head coach on Jan. 18, 2016, the reaction was, shall we say, underwhelming. He was mocked for his “emotional intelligence.” ESPN called the hiring “a reach.” Former Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb, then a television blabbermouth, said, “I want to see the Eagles win, but I don’t know if you do that just by bringing guys back who were there.” On and on it went. Pederson, following an undistinguished 13-year playing career, coached in the shadow of Andy Reid in Philadelphia and in Kansas City and gained almost no national traction as a “coach on the rise.” Well, look at Doug Pederson now. The job Pederson has done with the Eagles in his two seasons has been downright remarkable. Follow-

ing a get-toknow-you 7-9 first season, Pederson has the Eagles in Super Bowl LII against the mighty New England Patriots. He and the Eagles have overcome a Pro Bowl roster of injuries – quarterback Carson Wentz, left tackle Jason Peters, running back/ return man Darren Sproles, middle linebacker Jordan Hicks – to bring this football team to the brink of a Lombardi Trophy. “Doug knows how to relate to players, he understands what we’re going through because he’s played the game and he is just a great coach,” tight end Brent Celek said. “You can’t do a better job than what

EAGLES: Team could make history

<<Continued from page 20 finished with five catches for 85 yards. Keenum was 28 of 48 for 271 yards, one touchdown pass, two interceptions, a lost fumble and a quarterback rating of 63.8. He was sacked once. McKinnon caught 11 passes for 86 yards. The hero of the Vikings win over New Orleans, Stefon Diggs, caught eight passes for 70 yards. Keenum talked about how tough this loss was to him and the team. “They’re all hard to swallow,” Keenum said. “Once you get a game away from playing in the Super Bowl, that’s going to be hard to swallow. The way it happened, I mean, they played really well and we didn’t. It’s unfortunate.” Eagles linebacker Nigel Bradham talked about the Eagles and their amazing run after losing so many key players. “We’re a resilient team,” Bradham said, wearing his NFC Conference Champs T-shirt in the middle of the locker room. “And we’re built for this. One thing about it, this is a group of guys...we’re all special. We’ve been though all types of adversity, all types of situations and came out of that adversity on top. We’re going to continue to grind, continue to stay strong no matter what happens, no matter what we face, no matter what injuries we get, we’ll just continue to battle. That’s our mentality.” Thielen was asked if it was more what the Eagles were doing or what the Vikings did to them-

Doug is doing with us.” Pederson’s deft handling of his locker room is one part of the brilliance, and his supporting coaching staff is another piece of the equation, but what have truly stood out are the X’s and O’s and the offensive play calling on game days. The Eagles are aggressive and daring on offense. Pederson calls plays having the full trust of his players – witness the flea-flicker touchdown pass from quarterback Nick Foles to wide receiver Torrey Smith in the 38-7 win over Minnesota in the NFC championship game last Sunday: The Eagles practiced the play all of four times – all season – before calling it in a game. “I have the confidence in our guys that we’re going to make plays,” Pederson said. “We’ve talked about ‘situation’ football since last spring, so players know the message and they’re all on the same page. We’ve prepared well, the guys are dedicated

selves that produced such a poor performance. “It was both,” said Thielen, who was targeted eight times but caught just three passes for 28 yards. “Obviously, they made the plays. We have to get open sooner and present the quarterback with an open receiver. They’re a really good defense, they’re a great team. And their players made plays and our didn’t. That’s the moral of the story. This one’s going to hurt for us for a long time but it’s something we need to take into next year.” For the Eagles, it’s next week. Long and Blount both played for New England last year and helped the Patriots and Tom Brady win their fifth Super Bowl. Blount said the circumstances with him and Long are unusual. They both have friends on the team they will want to beat very badly on Feb. 4. “We’re excited about it,” Blount said at his locker after the game. “Obviously when you go to teams you make lifelong bonds with guys. There won’t be any friendliness or any brotherhood or anything like that. I’m going to let them know tonight that we’re still going to be boys forever, but you’re going to be on the other sideline two weeks from now so we’re going to cancel all that until afterwards.” The Eagles and their fans hope the afterwards includes hoisting a Super Bowl trophy.

South Philly bantamweight fighter Christian Carto has announced that his next fight will be taking place March 2 at the SugarHouse Casino event center. He is scheduled to face James Smith. Carto is 13-0, with 11 knockouts. His most recent victory came on Dec. 1, via a unanimous decision over Luis Fernando Saavedra.

and focused and they all want the same thing. “I’m just doing what comes naturally to me and what I’ve learned throughout my career as a player and as a coach.” Whatever he’s doing, it’s working. The Eagles played a perfect game against Minnesota, and Foles, under an intense public eye since replacing Wentz on Dec. 10 in the late stages of the win over the Los Angeles Rams, had the game of his life with three touchdown passes and 356 yards while completing 26 of his 33 passes. Nick Foles did that in the NFC championship game? Something’s going right, indeed. What’s going right is that Pederson has learned very quickly on the job by being himself, preaching a selfless philosophy and imbuing his players with confidence. The Eagles are going to the Super Bowl!!! Who’s laughing at Doug Pederson now?

JAN. 27-FEB. 4

JAN. 27

Put the plans in drive: The Pennsylvania Convention Center is being converted into a giant showroom, and for good reason – the Philly Auto Show is back! If you love cars, this will be the place to be, as more than 700 vehicles from 40-plus manufacturers will be on display. The week will include special appearances, including Rodney McLeod at the Honda display from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Jan. 29. Times vary. $7-$14. 11th and Arch streets. phillyautoshow.com.

Night at the Museum: How does pea soup sound for dinner? For those who are responding with a “Yum!” head on down to the American Swedish Historical Museum for a Pea Soup and Punch Supper event. Swedish yellow pea soup will be served with punch, along with sharp cheese, bread and thin pancakes with lingonberry jam and whipped cream for dessert. 6 p.m. $25 for museum members and $30 for non-members. RSVP by Jan. 24. Register by phone, 215- 389-1776, or online, americanswedish.org.

JAN. 27

JAN. 27 NXT is first: WWE week at the Wells Fargo Center begins with Saturday night’s NXT TakeOver Philly. The main event will feature Andrade “Cien” Almas putting his title on the line against Johnny Gargano. The night will likely include back-pounding chair shots when Adam Cole and Aleister Black battle in an extreme rules match. 7:15 p.m. $20-$300. Wells Fargo Center, 3601 S. Broad St. wellsfargocenterphilly.com.

JAN. 24, 2018

JAN. 28

Spend Saturday with The Geator: South Philly native Jerry Blavat, aka “The Geator with the Heater,” is ready to host a night of disco, soul and doo wop performances that will include The Intruders, The Clovers, Philly’s Blue Magic and Bobby Wilson playing tribute to his dad, Jackie Wilson. 8 p.m. $40-$100. Verizon Hall at the Kimmel Center, 300 S. Broad St. kimmelcenter.org.

It’s Time to Rumble in South Philly: What sounds like an old-fashioned neighborhood street fight is actually one of the WWE’s biggest events of the year. John Cena, Finn Balor, Randy Orton, “Woken” Matt Hardy and Shinsuke Nakamura are just a handful of the confirmed names for this 30-man, over-the-top-rope match in which the winner will secure a WrestleMania title shot. This year’s event comes with an added bonus – the first-ever Women’s Royal Rumble match. Call it the highlight of an extended wrestling weekend at the Wells Fargo Center. 6:30 p.m. $25-$600. 3601 S. Broad St. wellsfargocenterphilly.com.

OTHER GOODIES THROUGH JAN. 26 Center City Restaurant Week continues to offer great dining deals – three-course lunch for $20 or three-course dinner for $35. Amada, Del Frisco’s, Fago de Chao, Gran Caffe L’Aquila, Hawthornes Cafe and Max Brenner are just a handful of the participating restaurants. Simply make a reservation. centercityphila.org.

THROUGH FEB. 19 Among His Troops: Washington’s War Tent in a Newly Discovered Watercolor is a limitedrun exhibit that features a recently discovered 235-year-old, seven-foot panoramic painting of a 1782 Continental Army encampment. 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Free-$19. Museum of the American Revolution, 101 S. 3rd St. amrevmuseum. org.

THROUGH MARCH 4 Blue Cross RiverRink Winterfest is back. Grab the skates for Philly’s only outdoor, regulation-sized rink. Enter the winterized river

park for lights, activities and live entertainment galore. Pay as you go. 101 S. Columbus Blvd. delawareriverwaterfront.com. The Humans is a play that won more than 20 2016 Best Play Awards, including the Tony Award. When the Blakes leave Pennsylvania for a Thanksgiving dinner at their daughter’s new place in lower Manhattan, issues arise in this humorous and poignant play. 8 p.m. Prices vary. Walnut Street Theatre, 825 Walnut St. walnutstreettheatre.org.

JAN. 24 QOTA moves its monthly LGBTQ happy hour to Barcelona Passyunk, with beverage specials that include sangria along with wines from Spain and California. Free to attend. 6-9 p.m. 1709 E. Passyunk Ave. facebook.com/ east.p.avenue.

JAN. 25 Sports Quizzo with Joe DeCamara and Sports Radio WIP is a chance to put your

sports trivia knowledge to the test while enjoying food and drink specials, prizes and more. This month’s prizes include an Ike Reese signed football, a Rodney McLeod autographed mini helmet and Shane Victorino autographed baseball. 8-10 p.m. South Bowl, 19 E. Oregon Ave. southbowlphilly.com/calendar.

Sting, Jake “The Snake” Roberts, “Cowboy” Bob Orton, Bully Ray, Abdullah The Butcher and many, many more. 10 a.m-7 p.m. Jan. 27, 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Jan. 28. $20-$30. 2300 Arena, 2300 S. Swanson St. 2300arena.com.

Broad St. wellsfargocenterphilly.com.

Philly Auto Show Black Tie Gala Tailgate is the chance to preview this big event before it opens to the public on Jan. 27.
