t was a small item, even in the local news. You might have missed it. News out of the entertainment industry these days pretty much obsesses about Brad Pitt’s new love interest or the fact that on the Internet you can find a picture of Selena Gomez wearing a thong. Buddy Greco died a couple of weeks ago. Maybe you’re too young to remember Buddy. He was 90 Tom Cardella when he passed away. Some critics believe that in his own way, Buddy Greco was the first lounge singer. If he wasn’t, he certainly defined the term. He was not your washed up singer in a cheap, gaudy jacket with fake palm trees near the bar, singing banal songs off-key. He was definitely not the guy tinkling the piano keys while you made moves on the lady sitting alone at the end of a bar. If Buddy Greco is to be considered a lounge singer, he was the quintessential lounge singer. The guy who turned lounge singing into an art form. Buddy was born in South Philly. His brother and his family lived on South Iseminger Street, just blocks from where this newspaper ’s offices stood until this past year. And while we understandably ASS CARDELLA ^OUS ! ,,

s a child just beginning to grasp the possibilities present through music composition, Jay Weldon gravitated toward rap as a means to express himself and convey compelling messages. Over the years, his work has grown even more conscious of the consequences of certain thoughts and behaviors, including the omnipresent risks of texting while driving. When a friend lost his 16-year-old twin daughters to a car crash as a result of it, the Point Breeze native knew he needed to make an artistic statement, composing “Phone Epidemic� to decry the dependency on devices. “It was a tough pill to swallow, especially because I had known them their entire lives,� Weldon, 35, said of the girls, who died in North Carolina. “People are fragile to begin with, so for them not even to have reached adulthood really stings.� Their demise and a matter in which his father figure, Keith Mungin, barely avoided becoming a crash victim proved powerful sources of inspiration for Weldon. Under the auspices of the House of Reconciliation, 1217 S. 23rd St., with Mungin as president, he combined compassion and frustration into a three-minute call to keep one’s eyes on the road no matter the temptation. “I get the infatuation with wanting to stay in contact with people,� Weldon, whose video for the increasingly popular song features collisions attributable to distracted driving, said. “However, people have to realize that one second can stop that forever. One second. It’s just not worth it.� He recalled retreating to his “cave� to construct the piece, emerging last February with the tune/public service announcement. Reactions to it have helped him to believe even more in the reach that music can have and the insights that it can engender. “People love a good message, especially one’s that going to help them out,� the rapper, who also works construction, said of receptivity to his brainchild, with a retweet by Ellen De-

Police are investigating an incident in which a male was pronounced dead early Monday.

;SO\W\UTcZ ;O`QV To the Editor: As anyone knows from reading my frequent letters to the South Philly Review, I am no fan of President Donald Trump. I think he is crass, misogynistic and racist. I could not vote for him. Nor could I vote for Hillary Clinton because her platform included a plan to repeal the Hyde Amendment, permitting the government to fund abortions. We saw the reaction of millions to Trump’s inauguration. The most visible was the Women’s March last Saturday, which featured groups that were pro-

abortion. Their greatest fear is that he will de-fund Planned Parenthood, which is a main provider of abortions across the country. Unfortunately, many women who might have wanted to march for equal rights could not, because they were never born. Now, there are plans for another march in Washington, D.C. tomorrow. It is the March for Life, held on the anniversary of Roe v Wade. The theme of the March is The Power of One. Everyone who reads this letter and cares about the lives of unborn children should spread the word.

To the Editor: In his first day of office, President Trump has already begun to dismantle the Affordable Care Act. I’d like to first speak from personal experience. I grew up in a hardworking family where my parents owned a small business. They were never able to afford health insurance for our family of twelve. The mantra in our home was “never get sick.â€? A doctor’s visit was never in the family budget, and a hospitalization was the difference between solvency and bankruptcy. Health insurance is not a privilege it’s a necessity for working class families to pull themselves out of poverty. When people lack health coverage, many things occur that are disastrous for their families and for the whole community. Medical bills are the top cause of bankruptcy nationally. Medical issues and health conditions, left untreated, worsen and leave people unable to work and support AWU\a ]T bVS bW[Sa( AObc`ROg¸a 1S\bS` 1Wbg aWbcObSR E][S\¸a ;O`QV themselves and their families. Federally Qualified Health Centers such as La Comunidad Hispana provide an important safety net so that uninsured and underinsured families have a place to go for primary health care that can prevent more serious problems. Many of our patients rely on the ACA for coverage, and that coverage enables them to access medication for diabetes and other serious health conditions. When Elvis left the Spectrum on May 28, 1977, it would end up being his last live performance. Four years later, Bruce Springsteen headlined eight soldout shows there. The Boss would end up making 40-plus appearances at the Spectrum over the course of his

career. In terms of the most number of appearances, the distinction belongs to The Grateful Dead with 53. But the Spectrum was really a place where fans would be entertained by a who’s who list of musical acts. We are talking Billy Joel, Jimmy Hendrix, Pink Floyd and The Who, and this is just a small sampling. Pearl Jam ended up being the final act in the fall of 2009. But a conversation about the Spectrum would not be complete without mentioning the visionary behind it all - the late Ed Snider, who was the chairman of Comcast-Spectacor. While all that remains is a parking lot for patrons of Xfinity Live! or the Wells Fargo Center, the memories will last a lifetime. Remember When ... It’s simply a city facility that works great.� The East Passyunk Crossing resident received ample proof of that over the weekend, with mites, junior leaguers and seniors flashing their pearly whites (Here’s hoping further involvement keeps those choppers intact) for pictures. For Ryan, the tenure at Rizzo Rink has meant additional recreational joy when he is not playing baseball for the Delaware Valley Youth Athletic Association, 2840 S. 18th St., and excellent chances to be a leader. “It’s very entertaining,� the St. Monica student said of suiting up and gliding on the Pennsport-based surface. “It also gives me more confidence to do well with my work and to help my classmates believe in themselves.� The boy believes the upcoming years will yield even more adventures for him and the other skaters under the Rizzo Rink banner, with Pinto eager to have those aspirations come to fruition. “I’ve been involved here for 27 years, and there have been some challenges, and there will continue to be moments that test you,� the 19th-year council helmer said, with the commonwealth’s 2011 announcement that repairs to I-95 will necessitate the eventual demolition of Rizzo Rink (Fundraisers have worked to set aside money for the erection of a replacement space) as a chief topic of consideration. “Our record of helping kids to grow and become outstanding members of their communities, though, is unmatched, and that’s what’s going to carry us into the future as an even more reputable spot to come to.� THAT COMPELLING PITCH has made attracting consistent sponsors an easy task for the Rizzo bunch, who serve hundreds of upstarts through the youth hockey initiative. Happy to fraternize with South Philadelphians and to help son Benjamin and friends to revere the rink even more, Eric Berger is enjoying his second-year as a benefactor and finds himself impressed with the noticeable effects that enrollment has on the children. “This place does it right,� the Center City resident and founder/owner of the South-

of-South-situated Center City pediatrics said. “With respect to the promotion of development and the fostering of sportsmanship, this place gets it, and you can’t go wrong with a program that invests so much into making sure these kids feel valued. The same goes for parents. We feel we’re investing our time and money wisely.� In his fourth season as a Rizzo participant, Benjamin loves handling left wing duties for his club and fostering friendships. His father noted that delivering checks also presents a few thrills, leading the 9-year-old to reply with “Well, yes, that’s true, too.� The Bergers and their iceobsessed acquaintances will be bonding until early March, at which time the 13week season will conclude and the powers that be will shift to dry sports, notably roller and ball hockey, skateboarding, and soccer, with recreation leader Anthony DiFlorio III, who resides in Bella Vista, adding that circus artists have also used the venue for training. “It can be easy to focus on hockey, especially since we’re celebrating 30 years for our youth program, but there’s so much to behold here,� Pinto said of the building that opened in 1979, with Rizzo’s summer camp as another constant provider of mirth. “We’re all about reaching out and giving opportunities to whoever wants them, including college kids that we hire. Nobody who comes here is going to feel left out.�

The president also takes pride in the independent status that Rizzo enjoys, as the program elected in 2008 to refrain from joining the Ed Snider Youth Hockey Foundation, becoming the lone rink among five City-owned destinations to do so. Two years later, the spot received a commendation as the cleanest recreation center, yet another inviting detail when publicizing its amenities. “The big thing I get out of being affiliated with Rizzo is putting smiles on kids’ faces,� Lou Lozzi III, a former player who serves as a volunteer coach and an employee for the site’s public skate component, said. “It’s about giving them the courage to progress. For me, I’d say that emphasis on motivation and that push to strengthen communities will continue to attract people in the coming years.� “He’s a perfect example of what I mean when I say that people don’t go away for long,� Pinto said of the Whitman resident, adding that he would love to be able to track down and reunite the original mites for a reunion. “So many people have come through here, including (Mayor) Jim Kenney, who coached many of our kids. celebrate the great talent born in this area, you seldom hear the name of Buddy Greco mentioned. This column is meant in its small way, to correct that injustice. I guess it was some time in the late 1940s that I first heard Buddy Greco. We had a 78 RPM recording of a song called “Oh LookA There Ain’t She Pretty.” You might remember that I mentioned this song in my column of Dec. 22 (“The Last Christmas”) about my late Uncle Chibby. The song was recorded around 1947. Uncle Chibby loved to sing Buddy’s song right down to the words “hubba hubba.” “Hubba hubba” when used to describe a female would translate today into “she’s hot.” According to his bio, Greco thought he would collect big royalties from “Oh Look-A There Ain’t She Pretty.” It turned out he received a check for about $30. But don’t get me wrong. Buddy was not a novelty singer like Lou Monte. A better comparison would be Greco and Nat “King” Cole. Like Cole, he could’ve made it in the business as a terrific jazz pianist. And like Cole, Greco found out that there was more money in singing than in playing jazz piano. There were actually three great talents who could play jazz piano and sing. In addition to Greco and Cole, there was Oscar Peterson. Peterson sounded like Nat Cole. Ironically, he chose playing jazz piano over singing. Maybe because no one could play jazz piano like Peterson. By the time I first saw Buddy Greco perform, he played a token instrumental piano solo, but mostly he sang. And, oh, how he sang. Buddy was at the peak of his ability that night my cousin and I saw him perform at the Black Orchid Club in Atlantic City. Some singers are better on ballads, but Greco excelled at up-tempo songs. He made the great American songbook swing that night. Gershwin, Porter, Harold Arlen, a little Ellington tossed in. Unfortunately for Buddy, he was paired with the controversial and brilliant comedian of his time,

Lenny Bruce. Bruce respected no sacred cows. Everything from the Church to John F. Kennedy was fair game at a time when satirical and often caustic social humor was much less acceptable. Bruce pushed the limits. The establishment responded by using the police to harass Bruce in an attempt either to censor him or shut him down completely. Lenny’s story is chronicled in the film “Lenny” in which he is portrayed by Dustin Hoffman. At the time, Bruce often appeared at jazz venues. But it wasn’t working out well for Buddy Greco on this particular booking. The crowds at The Black Orchid were there to see Lenny Bruce, not Buddy. And they let Buddy know it. They sat impatiently during Greco’s portion of the act, either ignoring him or clamoring out loud for Bruce to appear. Buddy took it for a couple of nights, including the night we saw him. Then he announced he had had enough, and left. It was a long time before I saw Buddy Greco perform again. He and his wife were booked at the Prince Theater in Center City about six years ago. By that time, Buddy was well into his 80s. He was playing mostly at a small club they owned in Palm Springs, and occasionally played some tour dates in Europe. Most of his fans had passed on and he was pretty much unknown to younger fans. The crowd was small. The tickets, which were originally priced at $85, had been marked down a couple of times. My wife and I felt a little sad for Buddy when he walked on stage. He still had that thick curly hair, the jet black almost all gray now. He flashed his trademark smile. We hoped he wouldn’t embarrass himself. He didn’t. The years melted away as he performed. Though his fingers were gnarled from arthritis, Buddy could still dazzle at the keyboard. It proved to be Buddy’s last night performing in Philly. And that’s the way I’ll always remember him. Smiling and swinging. More than a lounge singer. Much more. A>@

s a child just beginning to grasp the possibilities present through music composition, Jay Weldon gravitated toward rap as a means to express himself and convey compelling messages. Over the years, his work has grown even more conscious of the consequences of certain thoughts and behaviors, including the omnipresent risks of texting while driving. When a friend lost his 16-year-old twin daughters to a car crash as a result of it, the Point Breeze native knew he needed to make an artistic statement, composing “Phone Epidemic� to decry the dependency on devices. “It was a tough pill to swallow, especially because I had known them their entire lives,� Weldon, 35, said of the girls, who died in North Carolina. “People are fragile to begin with, so for them not even to have reached adulthood really stings.� Their demise and a matter in which his father figure, Keith Mungin, barely avoided becoming a crash victim proved powerful sources of inspiration for Weldon. Under the auspices of the House of Reconciliation, 1217 S. 23rd St., with Mungin as president, he combined compassion and frustration into a three-minute call to keep one’s eyes on the road no matter the temptation. “I get the infatuation with wanting to stay in contact with people,� Weldon, whose video for the increasingly popular song features collisions attributable to distracted driving, said. “However, people have to realize that one second can stop that forever. One second. It’s just not worth it.� He recalled retreating to his “cave� to construct the piece, emerging last February with the tune/public service announcement. Reactions to it have helped him to believe even more in the reach that music can have and the insights that it can engender. “People love a good message, especially one’s that going to help them out,� the rapper, who also works construction, said of receptivity to his brainchild, with a retweet by Ellen De-

I am an advocate for positive forms of expression. I’ve never dealt with guns, so why would I sing about them, you know? I’m into helping folks to make realizations. In this case, I’m going to argue there’s no bigger cause than protecting life.� Nearing a year since he channeled his resolute regard for others into the song’s verses, Weldon, who has performed it in Maryland, New York, Ohio, and Virginia and will eventually receive West Coast exposure, hopes the track will continue to resonate with locals, whom he especially cited as susceptible to texting-while-driving’s quick fix appeal, when it appears on “Show You More Than I Can Tell You,� his 14-song debut album set for a midApril release. “I come from a generation where songwriters used their work as a platform to getting answers to tough questions,� he said. “These days, well, preferences make that a little harder, but there are still people dedicated to putting out stuff that will

I always want to be one of them because people need something to hold on to, and music can be that life preserver.� GROWING UP IN Point Breeze, Weldon relied on many positive influences, including his schoolteacher mother, Ola, and attendance at Greater Bethlehem Temple Church, 23rd and Tasker streets, to develop the positive worldview that informs his art. Engaged with the writing process, he found that well-crafted material could come to help him to stand out among his peers and sustain a presence in the field. “You know how Forrest Gump said ‘I just felt like running’?� he inquired in referencing the title character from the 1994 Academy Award-winning film. “Well, I just felt like rapping and getting my thoughts down and out there for people to take in. ried Charter High School. “I really wanted, even at a young age, to have an individual voice,� Weldon, whose evening coursework at Freedom Theatre consisted of music and business management, said. “Back then, and it’s held true two decades later, I wanted rap as my primary career because I believe it’s where I blossom the most. It’s where I think I can tap into emotions with the most honesty and integrity.� Weldon, whose sympathy for the complex situations that people experience also inspired a stint as a behavior therapist, has called New York and Delaware home, too, but he will forever revere Philadelphia for nurturing his creativity. Since the release of “From the Muscle� in 1999, his birth city has never turned its back on his forward way of thinking, with “Philly Stand Up,� a chart-topper that he penned in 2004 as the Eagles made their march to the Super Bowl, and a sponsorship from sports apparel icon Mitchell & Ness giving him even more clout. Former Gov. and Mayor Ed Rendell once said Blavat is as “Philadelphia as the cheesesteak.� And former Mayor Michael Nutter added that, “The Geator is as much a part of Philadelphia’s history as the Liberty Bell, Mummers and the Phillie Phanatic.� And among his many other talents – dancer, radio and television disc jockey, performer, entertainer, producer and nightclub owner – Blavat has been putting on his own kind of shows at the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts for the last 15 years. The latest, slated for Saturday, at 8 p.m. in Verizon Hall at the Kimmel Center, is titled Jerry Blavat’s Gospel, Soul and

Doo Wop Reunion. It features performances by Eddie Holman, The Chi-Lites, The Stylistics, A Celebration of Kenny Vance and the Planotones, a Tribute to Johnny Maestro with the Crests, the Dixie Hummingbirds with Dee Dee Sharp, and the Tokens. “This is the 38th show I’m putting on at the Kimmel Center,� Blavat said. “At first, when asked to put on a show, I initially said no. But after the first one sold out, I did two more, eventually scaling back to two a year. And they’ve all been sellouts. “If you look out into the audience, you’ll

see 16- to 90-yearolds – all enjoying the music,� Blavat continued. “That’s because music is timeless. In my shows, we feature music that is alive and exciting, with lyrics that speak to your heart and soul. It’s music that makes you want to dance and makes you happy. And making people happy is what my life’s been all about.� That happiness began when South Philly’s own Gerald Joseph Blavat was just 13 and debuted as a dancer on the original Bandstand hosted by Bob Horn. Three years later, he became the road manager for Danny and

the Juniors, and later personal valet for comedian Don Rickles. Blavat has done so much more, including writing a book titled "You Only Rock Once," which highlights much of his life – past and present, that includes his friendships with the likes of Sammy Davis Jr., Frank Sinatra and many other TV, stage and film luminaries. Blavat, himself, has appeared on TV and in feature films. Additionally, he was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, as well as the Broadcast Pioneers of Philadelphia Hall of Fame. The son of immigrants, Blavat grew up to experience the all-American dream. “I feel as though I’ve been blessed with a God-given talent, and I never dreamed I’d be where I am today. e made America great last week. A populist upheaval swept aside decades of control by elitist power brokers who reaped the rewards of government while the people had borne the cost. But last week, the carnage stopped right here and it stopped right now. That’s right: Pennsylvanians can now buy a sixpack at a beer distributor. Amid all the commotion in Washington, D.C., and on the streets of so many American cities, the antiquated beer laws of the Keystone State were changed almost without notice. For the first time in nearly a century, Pennsylvanians could actually purchase their favorite adult beverage in a serving size that is somewhat smaller than might be needed to sustain a fraternity house. A mere six cans. Until last week, state regs enacted after the Prohibition required that distributors sell beer by the full case. That meant 24 bottles, or under the inanely precise rules laid out by Harrisburg, 264 ounces. (That law was amended in 2016 through a bizarre loophole to allow for the sale of 12-packs.) But sixpacks? The most popular form of malt-based liquid containment in America? My own personal namesake? Illegal in the state’s beer distributors. Sad! Yes, you could buy a sixer-to-go at a bar. But that always felt like an act of late-night desperation, where you were apt to pay 15 bucks for six bottles of ordinary Yuengling— about the price of a full case if you had actually planned ahead. Never mind that dopey two-sixpack limit (still intact) that had you running back and forth to your car, trying to stock up enough brew for an afternoon of widescreen football. The complex rules eventually spawned a charade exploited by some grocery stores, in which sixpacks are sold separately from bread and milk at a special cash register in an in-store “restaurant.� The sixpack ban was lifted under a law signed last fall by our governor, who is a communist. Let that sink in. Which led me to Worldwide Beverage last

De h[i[hlWj_edi h[gk_h[Z weekend. This neighborhood beer distributor, located in a former post office on Green Lane, has been serving the thirsty citizens of Roxborough for many years. It’s not uncommon to see double-parked cars out front, their trunks open for loading. On this day, I walked. “You got sixpacks?� It was like asking for an illegal onesie at the 7-Eleven. The guy behind the counter nodded to a small rack against the wall. There wasn’t much of a selection—maybe 15 brands. It’ll be a few more months before distributors can furnish their stores with proper coolers and display cases. I grabbed a sixpack of New Belgium Voodoo Ranger, a strong (9 percent alcohol) imperial IPA that was a bargain at $11.49 plus sales tax. Speaking of which, unlike bars, delis and grocery stores, beer distributors do not collect Philadelphia’s 10 percent drink tax. It’s another one of those odd loopholes—one that I expect the city will close any day now. But this day was not about negativity. Yes, it was gray and rainy outside (is it my imagination, or has the sun been absent from the sky since the Inauguration?), but, for the first time in my life, I left a Pennsylvania beer distributor with a mere sixpack under my arm. ith a refined demeanor stemming from her Parisian upbringing, Estelle Nguyen possesses a very vibrant personality that she enjoys displaying in the hope of making others’ contentment comparable to hers. He enrolled at his mother’s insistence, yet spent the summer before his freshman year in a foul mood. “Eventually, I set my mind to playing basketball, but, yeah, I was upset over the decision,� the 6-foot-1 presence said of making a shift that has yielded playing in the Sonny Hill Community Basketball League and the Point Breeze Youth Development League, the latter being Bey’s brainchild. “It’s been fun to grow as an individual and as a member of a team. I think this is a great system for me because I can attack the rim and be a slasher when I think I have a good opportunity to score.� In his inaugural year as a roster member, he and his peers advanced to the Public League semifinals. Last season ended with a first-round loss, but no matter what the outcome of a game has been, McNealWright has always been a dream come true for statistics-obsessed observers. “He’s averaged 21 or 22 points per game in his time with us,� Bey said of the dynamic depositor. “He’s been such a strong part of what we’ve done this year, and I know he wants to keep the momentum going right through the playoffs.� Once McNeal-Wright ends his South Philly journey for the 14-2 Rockets, who host William L. Sayre High School today at 3:15, he hopes to continue his athletic growth as a La Salle University Explorer.
