Geared up Local businesses are capitalizing on Eagles’ success ahead of game By Tom Beck SOUTH PHILLY REVIEW

usinesses in South Philly have been taking advantage of the Eagles NFC Championship by selling a variety off Eagle green merchandise before this Sunday night’s Super Bowl. The Painted Lady, a boutique baby and children’s clothing store on East Passyunk Avenue, has begun selling Eagles T-shirts – a product you wouldn’t typically find sold at the store – outside on the sidewalk of the store. The T-shirts adorn the words “NFC Champions.” It’s the first time store owner Angela Dee has sold anything like them. “I’m just selling them on the side,” she said. “Everybody’s interested in the Eagles now.” Nicole Styer, the owner/operator of NRS Boutique, a woman’s clothing store also located on East Passyunk Avenue, has seen a huge jump in people coming to her store since the Eagles defeated the Vikings to advance to the Super Bowl. She said the store’s busier now than it was the weekk before Christmas. “It’s kind of crazy,” said Styer, “and being one person makes it even crazier.” Styer designs every article of clothing in herr store. Often, she’ll start with a T-shirt and alter itt by re-dying it, cutting it up and “make them more fashionable than the regular boxy T-shirts” that you’d typically find marketed to women in big box stores. Because it’s been so busy and Styer hand designs every article of clothing in the store, it’s been See EAGLES, page 6>>

also be really cool,” he said right before reality set in. “I probably won’t finish first, though. Just being realistic.” Originally from Northeast Philly, Lyman initially realized he had a knack for competitive eating during Greek Week at La Salle University, where he went to college. “For Greek Week they had a wing off,” Lyman said. “So it was like all the fraternity and sorority people eating wings against each other, and I won
that all four years at La Salle.” Impressive. Lyman, who goes by the nickname Skin and Bones, is actually very skinny. Apart from competing in the Wing Bowl, he’s also very healthy. He’s an avid runner who’s competed in the Philadelphia Marathon, and has a day job managing a store on 16th and Sansom called Philadelphia Runner. While attending La Salle, he majored in nutrition. Eagles is to be quick to adjust to new defenses, different personnel and new formations . They also have the best quarterback of all time. Cerebral, cunning, 17 years’ worth of plays and concepts and nothing the Eagles can show that Tom Brady has not seen many times before. What they seem to lack, because they have been in these big games so many times, is raw emotion, something the Eagle players and the adoring fans have no shortage of. That can be used to jump to early leads. The problem out with raw emotion is that it’s hard to sustain for three-anda-half hours. That’s when the Patriots come alive when they need it the most, when they can no longer make mistakes, when they have to be at their very, very best. I believe that regardless of the famous coach and quarterbac k, the Eagles are a better team. I think they are much better built in the trenches on both sides of the ball, and that’s where this game will be decided. I think Foles believes this as well. He knows he has to be much more than just a game manager.

outh Philly’s got talent, and the South Philly Review wants to showcase that talent to everyone! For the first time, the Review will be hosting a “South Philly’s Got Talent” competition, where we’ll search for the most talented individuals in South Philly. Have a special talent in music? Acting? Poetry? Magic? Comedy? Something else? If so, we want to hear from you! Our first talent competition will be held in the spring at a local venue (more details to be announced in the near future), at which the finalists will perform for a live audience and judges who will select winners in age categories. Prizes worth more than $500 will be given to the winners! If you have a special talent and want to enter the competition, go to our Facebook page, facebook.com/southphillyreview, and message us a 30-60 second video of your talent. You can also email entries to news@southphillyreview.com. The competition is open to all ages. Our team will review all the entries and whittle them down to a list of finalists, who will perform live at our event in the spring. The deadline to submit an entry is Friday, Feb. 16. Finalists will be announced at the end of February. For more information or questions, email news@southphillyreview.com and put “Talent” in the subject line.

WING BOWL: Point Breeze man looking to make mark in competition <<Continued from page 1 “Ideally, the less body fat you have, Lyman said, “you’re stomach can stretch further out. So ideally the more fit you are, you can push your stomach to higher capacities without blocking anything. This is one of the reasons why Japanese superstar competitive eater Takeru Kobayashi has had so much success. The similarly skinny Kobayashi, by the way, was a competitor in Wing Bowl 19, which was Lyman’s first Wing Bowl. At the end of the day, however, the Wing Bowl isn’t all fun and games. A lot of preparation goes into the event for all the eaters, and Lyman is no exception. He fasts for about 20-24 hours before he’s set to go onstage, the only exception being a potato chip or two. “I might snack on a potato chip or two during the day because if you don’t eat at all, it actually shrinks your stomach size, he said. “I’m [also] chugging a lot of water during the day for hydration too because you’re not going to perform as well if you’re not hydrated. It’s a little bit of a science to tie it up perfectly. Some years I’ve tied it up better than others,
but you’re pretty hungry by the time you get going. Lyman says it would be nice to sleep a little bit before the event, but the adrenaline his body has going through it the night before makes it impossible. “I have to be down at the stadiums by like three or four in the morning, and by the time your buddies come over at 12 o’clock at night, they start drinking, he said. “It’s a lot of adrenaline, so you’re not really sleeping. I would like to, but it never happens. A true Philly guy who was born and raised in the Northeast (his favorite food is tomato pie from Tony’s Place in Mayfair), Lyman has also been marching with the O’Malley Wench Brigade on New Year’s Day the past four years. However, there’s nothing like competing at the Wing Bowl, which he describes as “pure debauchery. “It really doesn’t feel like you’re eating in front of 20,000 people, Lyman said. “I think the anticipation of just getting onstage in the first place is way more overwhelming, so by the time you’re up there you just get it going. It’s a relief to be up onstage. Wing Bowl 26, which is sold out, takes place this Friday at 6 a.m.

EAGLES: Team generating fan fever for merchandise
<<Continued from page 1 difficult to keep up with demand, but so far so good. She says the trick is “a lot of coffee. “It’s just nonstop, she said. “I usually work pretty fast, but this is fast to another level. “People are like ‘oh, this is something different,’ she said about customers’ reactions when they see her designs. Earlier in the day, a women came in and bought seven Eagles-oriented articles of clothing because she was flying out to Minneapolis to attend the Super Bowl. She wanted Eagles merchandise to wear on each day of the week. “The lady who grabbed a bunch for the Super Bowl [said] she wanted to stand out because everybody [else] has the same T-shirts. Jessica Argondizza, a customer at Modell’s Sporting Goods, is not a football fan in the least. “I’m more into gaming and stuff, she said. But Argondizza was invited to a Super Bowl party this weekend and needed an Eagles-themed
shirt to wear, so she stopped by the Modell’s Sporting Goods on Snyder Avenue to pick one out from the wide variety of Eagles merch the store had on sale. In the local team merchandise section of the store, Eagles shirts and jackets took up more than half of the area, with Phillies, Sixers and Flyers merchandise located way in the back. “I just needed an Eagles shirt to wear and this one felt comfortable so I got it, she said noting she didn’t want anything too expensive, like a team jersey. “Most of my friends are actually pretty into it whether or not we win or lose, but I’m kind of the only bandwagon one. They’re pretty into it. Being a gamer, Argondizza was more interested in Philadelphia’s new E-sports team, the Philadelphia Fusion. “I’ll buy their jersey, she said of the Fusion. “But this is just kind of whatever.
We’ll tell everyone else.

REMEMBER WHEN
They won it all before it was the Super Bowl
S
uper Bowl LII is just days away. The New England Patriots have built what one could describe as a Super Bowl empire (many Eagles fans refer to it as the evil empire). The 10 appearances and five wins in the big game have a little something to do with it. The Philadelphia Eagles, on the other hand, are making just their third appearance in the modern Super Bowl era, with the other two coming during the 1980 and 2004 seasons, with the result in the latter contest being a 24-21 defeat at the hands of those Patriots. Could this finally be the year the Eagles win the big one and give a crowd of millions that parade down South Broad Street? No matter how things unfold Sunday in Minneapolis, 2018 marks the 70th anniversary of the first NFL championship in team history. In 1948, they defeated the Chicago Cardinals — predating the Chicago Bears — 7-0 at Shibe Park. Halfback Steve Van Buren, who would later be inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame, scored the lone touchdown on a 5-yard run. The team coached by Hall-of-Famer Earle Greasy Neale finished the season 9-2-1. Photo provided by PHILLY PHOTOS AND VIDEOS OF THE 50s, 60s, 70s, AND 80s

Underdog Eagles, led by unlikely Foles, gonna fly now By BRIAN BALDINGER For South Philly Review
In the Philadelphia Eagles draft of 2012, they selected Fletcher Cox with the first pick. They had two selections in the second round and took Mychal Kendricks and Vinny Curry. Do you see where this is going? In the third round, they selected out of the University of Arizona, a quarterback named Nick Foles. I never forgot what they said about Foles in the thumbnail of information after the selection: “We know how Andy Reid loves drafting QBs, so this isn’t a shock pick. Foles has great size at 6-foot-5, 243 pounds and is an accurate thrower with a big arm. What he does not have is mobility. He is basically a statue in the pocket. The Eagles haven’t developed any starters with these mid-round QB picks, but they have had success trading them for value later. Nothing could have been written at that moment in time with any more accuracy. After the Eagles traded Foles to the Rams in 2015, he signed with the Chiefs for the 2016 before signing with Philly as a free agent before this season. Make no mistake about the largest storyline in Super Bowl LII – Foles. The Eagles are heavy underdogs for the third straight game in large part because the people who make the betting lines are still unsure about how Foles will perform on the league’s largest stage. I think both Foles and his teammates who have always fully supported him crave the underdog role. In 2012, I was announcing the Eagles preseason games for ABC channel 6 here. I was at many of the summer training camp practices at Lehigh University and spent time around a lot of the younger players, including Foles. I knew he attended AustinWestlake High School, which had turned out Drew Brees more than a decade earlier. Foles would break most of Brees’ passing records. He was also a Division I basketball recruit and for a long time he thought basketball would be his ticket to Division 1 sports. During that stretch, I met his
affable father, Larry Foles. He was a selfmade multimillionaire by climbing from the very bottom of the restaurant business to one day owning and eventually selling a chain of restaurants. His first preseason game that 2012 season was home at the Linc against the Pittsburgh Steelers. Reid and the quarterbacks coach, Doug Pederson, were excited to see what Foles could do. It was to be a major storyline going into the first preseason game. When Mike Vick jammed his thumb by accidentally hitting a helmet, Foles was thrust into action. He entered the game with the Birds down, 13-0. He really responded. I distinctly recall him using an audible to take a deep shot for a touchdown on a throw that looked like the flea flicker throw to Torrey Smith for a 41yard touchdown pass in the NFC Championship game against the Vikings. He would toss another touchdown pass in his debut and the Eagles would prevail, 24-23. There was a lot to like about him on that hot August night. And there is a lot to like about him now as we build with “Go Birds excitement leading up to Feb. 4 in Minneapolis at US Bank Stadium. His opportunity to lift this starved franchise on his broad Texas shoulders happened in an instant in Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum on Dec. 10 against the Rams. The rising star of the entire National Football League, Carson Wentz, dove into the end zone the way he had dived on a football field his entire life. Except on this dive, he would rupture the all-so important ACL ligament. He would heroically limp back onto the field and toss a sturdy touchdown pass to Alshon Jeffrey. Simultaneously, at the other

Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Nick Foles stands with the George Halas Trophy after winning the NFC Championship Game Sunday, Jan. 24, at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia. stadium in Carson, Calif., the Chargers were busy whipping up on the Washington Redskins. I was announcing that game for national radio. Later, after both games were wrapped up, I headed to LAX airport to take the redeye flight home. It was jammed pack with celebratory Eagle fans, but bittersweet, due to the imminent injury to Carson. Concerned fans were coming up to me throughout the six-hour flight home asking me how good Foles was. Could he finish the job that Carson had started with his amazing season? Or would the playoffbound Birds be the feared “one and done. I didn’t think it was fair to give knee-jerk analysis since he hadn’t played in preseason due to shoulder soreness and due to Carson’s emergence as a bonafide star. He would have to play himself in to shape. There were ups and downs and more doubt than belief as the Birds played that first playoff game versus the Falcons. It was a playoff nail biter,
going down the final fourth down throw to Julio Jones. Lots of relief, but a real belief that the team around the QB was really, really good. But the Vikings victory took all belief to astronomical proportions. Foles was at his best in every category. He looked like he was the reincarnation of Wentz and against the league’s best defense. I don’t know if Nick can duplicate that performance on the super stage. That would be difficult to imagine. But perhaps he doesn’t have to. What we have come to realize is the team in every area is really good, and very well prepared around the QB. The opponent has the league’s best coach in Bill Belichick. Whatever he has shown in the 18 games they have played thus far, will not be what he will show in the Super Bowl. Not because he wants to show new tricks, but because each game is a new game with a new game plan designed to beat that team. It won’t be any different come Feb. 4. The important thing for the
Eagles is to be quick to adjust to new defenses, different personnel and new formations. That can be used to jump out to early leads. The problem with raw emotion is that it’s hard to sustain for three-and-a-half hours. That’s when the Patriots come alive when they need it the most, when they can no longer make mistakes, when they have to be at their very, very best. I believe that regardless of the famous coach and quarterback, the Eagles are a better team. I think they are much better built in the trenches on both sides of the ball, and that’s where this game will be decided. I think Foles believes this as well. He knows he has to be much more than just a game manager. That won’t be enough. In the NFC Championship game, the Birds were an astounding 11-of15 on third down. The success on this important down eventually broke the sword of the Minnesota Vikings. Foles was a huge part of that success. The thought of Pederson and Foles defeating the glorified combination of Belichick and Brady is also the story of Rocky, our city’s famous fictional character who defines this city’s underdog mentality. It’s a theme that is also that of America’s proud history. I believe the Foles story will supplant that of Rocky Balboa on Feb. 4 in Minneapolis. It will be even better. It will take place on a football field and not a boxing ring. And it will be even better because it will be real and not fiction. And I can’t wait to watch this Nick Foles story be told. And his adoring and growing Philadelphia fan base.

esterday was my wife Fran’s birthday. It was what people call a “special birthday. We celebrated by spending a couple of nights in New York. New York has always been a magical place for us. Bobby Short at the Carlyle. The Oak Room at the Algonquin. Frank, Ella and Basie at the Uris Theater. Liza on Broadway. Much of the glamor we knew has all but disappeared giving way to the coarseness of Trump’s America in 2018. Life is not a Cary Grant movie. Never was. But that hasn’t stopped us from chasing the remnants of a lost time. Call us romantics. Fran loves the look and style of actress Audrey Hepburn as Holly Golightly in the movie “Breakfast at Tiffany’s. Her ideal gift is a piece of jewelry from Tiffany’s. I have managed to purchase a modest gift – by Tiffany’s standards – from the store almost each year for her. TIffany’s signature color is robin’s egg blue. Fran and I still laugh about what happened after she donated a kidney to me nine years ago. She expected a blue box from Tiffany’s, and that’s exactly what she got. A blue box from Tiffany’s. No gift. Just kidding. A couple of months ago, I found out that Tiffany’s had opened The Blue Box Cafe in their flagship store on Fifth Avenue. You can now enjoy breakfast at Tiffany’s. The Blue Box Cafe seats fewer than 30 people. Reservations must be made online, no more than 30 days prior to the date requested. Exactly 30 days in advance of our visit, I went online at 10 a.m. to make a reservation for one morning during our planned January trip. My reservation request was not accepted. I was advised to leave my phone number and wait for a call back. The return call never came. When I returned to the website, I found the cafe was sold out for the three days we would be in New York. Forget about our having breakfast at Tiffany’s. About a week before our scheduled trip to New York, I passed by our local Tiffany’s store around Broad and Walnut. I got an idea. What could I lose by pleading my case to the Tiffany’s store manager? The manager turned out to be an attractive young woman by the name of Tania. I introduced myself and told her about our foiled plans. Tania smiled pleasantly as she listened to my heart-rending tale. I explained that my wife not only was scheduled to have a “special birthday this month, but that she’s a special person – a kidney donor. Perhaps most importantly, I was the lucky guy who received her kidney. Married 53 years. Tiffany’s customers, too – although I hastily added that the modest gifts I’d purchased through the years from their store were hardly responsible for Tiffany’s success. When I was finished, Tania explained that Tiffany’s management folks have no clout in obtaining res-
ervations at The Blue Box Cafe. The restaurant, it turns out, is run by a third party. But she offered to find out why our reservation had not been accepted. She took my contact number. I admit that I wouldn’t be surprised if she were only being polite. But to my astonishment, I heard from Tania the next day. True, she couldn’t get us into The Blue Box Cafe for breakfast, but she did get us a reservation at Tiffany’s private VIP salon where we would be treated to a glass of champagne. On a bright and cold blustery afternoon in New York City, we entered Tiffany’s on Fifth Avenue. The store contains assorted baubles bearing the Tiffany’s logo from key chains to fabulously expensive jeweled bracelets. The 128-carat Tiffany Diamond is on display on the main floor. Holly Golightly was nowhere in sight, but there were plenty of shoppers, including some obvious tourists such as ourselves for whom Tiffany’s is as much a museum of art as a place to shop. Upon showing our invitation, we were escorted to the salon on the mezzanine level. There we were greeted by an executive sitting at an impressive desk. He in turn introduced us to a charming young man, Dio, from the Dominican Republic. He escorted us to a private salon. The dÊcor was decidedly robin’s egg blue. We seated ourselves on the sofa. Dio brought us champagne in beautiful fluted glasses. Sipping on champagne, we told him our story. He, in turn, related how his immigrant family achieved success in America. Dio then brought us a tray of petit fours decorated like Tiffany’s boxes. And we enjoyed more champagne. Fran and I shared a petit four. We ended the day with a tour of the rest of the store, including the elusive, sold-out Blue Box Cafe. I noted just one male patron. Fran stopped before a display case containing a small 18 carat gold bracelet with two Amazonite stones on either end. The stones were robin’s egg blue. She would not let me buy the bracelet for her. I made a note to double back to buy the bracelet despite her pleas. That was before we ate dinner that night at La Grenouille. The menu in the window seemed reasonable. Turned out that was their lunch menu. The prix fixe dinner cost $500. It was too embarrassing to try and leave. The lovely bracelet from Tiffany’s would have to wait.

State Attorney General Josh Shapiro and his Bureau of Consumer Protection are warning Pennsylvanians to be alert for scams when buying Super Bowl LII tickets or other products relating to the event. Consumers and sports fans can be scammed and end up buying fraudulent tickets or products without realizing it. “Everyone enjoys the Super Bowl, and in Pennsylvania, we are all excited the Philadelphia Eagles are heading to the big game, Shapiro said. “However, big sporting events like the Super Bowl also attract scam artists, and my Bureau of Consumer Protection will protect consumers if something goes wrong with their ticket purchases. Philadelphia plans to roll out CUES initiative City aiming to create spaces for drug users to inject drugs safely
‘I can 100 percent say that I would have no problem – as a person with a 6-month-old – having a safe injection site next to my house. The stigma has got to go.’ – Jillian Bauer-Reese, Temple University professor and recovery advocate

T
his past Wednesday, the city of Philadelphia announced plans to encourage organizations to develop Comprehensive User Engagement Sites, in which opiate addicts would be provided a safe space within the city to use heroin and other opiates under medical supervision. “These locations are similar to safe injection sites, a press release from the city says, “but they also would offer a wide range of other important services to meaningfully assist those struggling with addiction. The other services, which would be provided in a walk-in setting, would include referrals to treatment and social services, wound care, medically supervised drug consumption and access to sterile injection equipment and Naloxone. If such sites were opened in the city, Philadelphia would become the first city in America to embrace safe injection sites, and the second in North America. Vancouver was the first North American city to embrace the idea, where it has been met with success, according to Vancouver officials. The use of safe injection sites has been utilized considerably more in various European countries, including the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, Germany and Switzerland. The theory behind CUES is they will reduce public drug use, prevent overdoses, prevent diseases by providing users with clean needles, provide better access to treatment – and most importantly – save lives. In the event of an overdose, medical professionals will be nearby to administer Narcan, a drug that blocks the effects of opioids and can reverse an overdose. There is one key difference, however, between what Philadelphia is proposing and what other countries have done, and that’s supplying the actual heroin. Research shows the best way of treating heroin addicts is to supply them with methadone or suboxone, both of which are opiates that eliminate cravings and
withdrawal systems for heroin addicts. However, according to the federal government’s National Institute on Drug Abuse, methadone and suboxone are ineffective treatments for up to 40 percent of users. For this group of people, research says, the most effective treatment is medical-grade heroin. “[Supervised injectable heroin] is found to be an effective way of treating heroin dependence refractory to standard treatment, reads the conclusion in a 2017 study in the British Journal of Psychiatry. “The prescribing of diamorphine (pharmaceutical heroin) as part of treatment for heroin addiction initially appears counter-intuitive. Addiction is increasingly recognised as a chronic relapsing disorder for which effective treatments exist. However, public responses to addiction tend to polarise around addiction as ‘badness’ or addiction as ‘illness,’ and counter-intuitive treatments often generate strongly felt passions associated with these differing frames of reference. When debate gets heated, it is particularly important for science to contribute cool-headed analysis. In the 14 years since Vancouver’s safe injection site opened, injection drug use, overdose deaths and the HIV infection rate have all declined, Patricia Daly, chief medical health officer for Vancouver Coastal Health, told Vancouver-based newsradio station News 1130. VCH is the public authority that oversees and funds the Vancouver safe injection site. Perhaps even more impressively, the city’s life expectancy has shot up a whopping 10 years, she said. For many in the community, however, the obvious question is, “Where are we going to put the sites? During the district attorney race, many residents were adamant they would not welcome such sites in their neighborhood. “Those [opiate users] are already in their neighborhood, said Jillian BauerReese, a professor at Temple University who teaches a class called Solutions Journalism: Covering Addiction. “This should be a place where people could go and, under medical supervision, use a substance and get treatment when
they’re ready for it. This whole NIMBY thing – Not In My Backyard – has got to stop. “I think they’re necessary, said Elvis Rosado, the education and outreach coordinator for Prevention Point, a Kensington-based private nonprofit that provides harm-reduction services to Philadelphia and the surrounding area. Rosado said often users will go to an assessment center seeking help, say on a Tuesday, but a spot might not be available for them until Saturday. “[So] for Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and part of Saturday, that person was still using, he said. “Still at risk of overdose, still at risk of infections, still at risk of HIV or anything else, still at risk of arrest of getting incarcerated because of where they are using and other things that may or may not be happening. “I can 100 percent say that I would have no problem – as a person with a 6-month old – having a safe injection site next to my house, said Bauer-Reese “The stigma has got to go. Moving forward, the city will actively encourage organizations like community nonprofits or medical organizations to operate and fund one or more CUES. While the city will not operate CUES, agencies and officials will bring together key stakeholders and identify organizations that are interested in operating, funding or offering a location for such a facility. “Philadelphia’s fatal overdose rate is the worst in the nation among large cities, and incidents of overdose have steadily increased to an alarming degree, said Mayor Jim Kenney about the decision. “I applaud the work of the Task Force and city leadership in taking this bold action to help save lives. CUES are the latest part of a much broader strategy to address this public health crisis. The Mayor’s Task Force to Combat the Opioid Epidemic is informing the city’s efforts to reduce opioid abuse, dependence and overdose in Philadelphia. tbeck@newspapermediagroup.com

Super Bowl fever calls for feeding hungry Eagles fans Local businesses will be ready to meet the higher demand that is expected for the big game By Bill Gelman SOUTH PHILLY REVIEW
N
ormally, this time of year, all it takes is one mention of the words “winter storm is coming” to create mass chaos at the local supermarkets. This week, however, it doesn’t really matter what the projected forecast is for one simple reason – the Philadelphia Eagles playing the New England Patriots in Super Bowl LII is enough to draw a crowd. Instead of shelling out thousands on a trip to Minneapolis, many fans will be staying in South Philly. Hosting or attending a Super Bowl party is much friendlier on the wallet. Plus, if the Eagles do pull off their first-ever Super Bowl win on Sunday, the pre-parade celebration will spill out onto South Broad Street. Jennifer Colligas-Moyer, one of the owners of ShopRite, 300 W. Oregon Ave., is anticipating people will be “stocking up on all of their Super Bowl party needs,” with snacks, party platters, paper goods, cups and plastic cutlery being a handful of the in-demand items. The store is preparing by increasing its supply order. “This is such a huge event for our city, and we want to make sure that we have everything the fans need to celebrate,” Colligas-Moyer said. In terms of preparing for this week’s crowd versus a winter storm, she said “that’s definitely a tie.” Pizza, steaks sandwiches and hoagies will be in high demand on Sunday, too. Keith Vellios, owner of Lorenzo’s Pizza, 9th and Christian streets, usually enjoys a day off on Sunday, but with the Eagles being in the big game, it’s all hands on deck. He is preparing for the larger-thannormal demand by having extra batches of dough ready. Typically, he said, one batch makes 30 to 40 pizzas. Preparing the dough is a process, that will likely begin sometime on Saturday, as it takes two to three hours before it’s ready to use. Vellios also noted that he will be doubling the number of wings in his food supply order. “I think it will get pretty crazy, especially with the Eagles in the Super Bowl,” Vellios said. Some customers have already preordered strombolis. They come mostly cooked to the point where 10 minutes in the oven is all that will be needed.
File photo “They are great for parties,” he said. While many take-out businesses will be open during the game, Lorenzo’s will stick to its Sunday schedule of closing at 5 p.m., which means all orders will be picked up or delivered well before kickoff. From there, Vellios plans on heading home to watch the game with his kids. The team at Mattei Family Pizza, 1260 Point Breeze Ave., has yet to experience what business is like on Super Bowl Sunday as a result of being a new business. The Eagles being in the game just adds to the excitement. “Could not be more proud, especially since so many ‘experts’ pinged us as the underdog,” said owner Mariano Mattei. Like Lorenzo’s, he is expecting wings and pizza to be big-ticket items, and will be stocking up on the supplies to meet the demand.
For those looking to have food in time for the 6:30 p.m. kickoff, he advises that earlier is better so the staff can pre-plan. Mattei Family Pizza is preparing for a big dine-in crowd, too, as they will be hosting a big game buffet in which fans enjoy the game and food, along with complimentary wine and beer. Tickets are $10 for children ages 4 to 13 and $39 for adults (visit matteifamilypizza.com). In the spirit of Eagles fever, the restaurant is offering its limited lean, green, fighting machine football pizza with kale, onion, mozzarella and a Lebanese garlic sauce. In terms of who Mattei is rooting for on Sunday, he has two words to share: “Go Eagles!” The upbeat mood spreads to the ShopRite in Whitman Plaza. “Our store is pumped! Go Birds,” Colligas-Moyer said.
Some restaurants are getting creative with their menus this week, including this lean, green, fighting machine football pizza available at Mattei Family Pizza.

Eagles OT Johnson flapping his charitable wings with Fuel By Bill Gelman SOUTH PHILLY REVIEW
T
here is a sea of green in South Philly right now — we are talking shirts, hats and decorated windows. Restaurants are getting into the game, too. Fuel, 1917 E. Passyunk Ave., for instance, is selling the Lane Johnson green machine smoothie. That’s right, the Philadelphia Eagles offensive tackle has his own drink. It features kale, spinach, pineapple, honey and banana. Being that it’s Super Bowl week, Johnson has partnered with Fuel owner Rocco Cima to support his favorite charity, Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, with $2 from every purchase being donated to the cause. “This smoothie is special to me because it contains all of my favorite flavors and ingredients and is Eagles’ green,” said Johnson. “I always want to

baker, dating back to 1890 in Warsaw, Poland. His family immigrated to Brooklyn in 1910. In ‘60, his grandfather opened the first shop, which the family still owns today. His dad opened a location off of South Street in ’96, and now it’s Wagner’s turn. He said “my family’s bagel is the only water boiled traditional bagel left being baked in the city.” In terms of what to put on it, he said the “jalapeño cheddar that literally melts in your mouth.” He also noted the cinnamon raisin bagel with chicken salad is “so good.” …. Eagles have fans everywhere except Minnesota
home team being “likeable.” “I was an Eagles fan the first 21 years of my life before I got in the NFL,” the 29-year-old Develin said. “It’s a special moment. All my family is still back there. We’ve got a lot of roots there. They (the Eagles) have had a tremendous year, they’re a great team. But I’ve got a job to do on Sunday and we have to be ready to go.”

he Eagles have it all going right now. In fact, the Birds are poised to become the face of the NFL and America’s Team if they keep all this winning up. The Eagles are talented, deep and have a great combination of youth and veterans. The team has accumulated great nicknames too, starting with the “J-Train,” “Nicky Franchise,” “Big V,” “The Green Goblin” and Wiz. And of course everyone in Eagles Nation lives in Carson City, Wentzylvania. Football America is falling in love with these Birds. Well, except here in Minnesota, where right now anything Eagles gets booed anytime, anywhere, highlighted by the crowd at the Xcel Center, home of the Minnesota Wild and Media Night Monday night. Thousands of mostly locals showed up at the arena to watch all the hoopla and silliness that goes with Media Day. It became evident as the night went on, the only reason most were there was to cheer for the Patriots and aim full-throated boos at the Eagles, who knocked off the Vikings 38-7 last Sunday to win the NFC Championship. Many Eagles players took it as a compliment. But for the rest of country, outside of the Boston area, it’s all about the Birds. There are no real scandals with any of the Eagles right now, are there? Lane Johnson’s PED thing is barely visible in the rear view mirror these days. There is a never-say-die spirit about these guys that is infectious. Several Eagles players and executives talked about how the Birds have caught on around the country. “I think it’s a bunch of guys that love football,” Eagles Vice President of Player Personnel Joe Douglas said as the Eagles session started. “And they love playing with each other. They fight for each other, they fight for Doug (head coach Pederson) and they fight for the City. I think the rest of the country sees that, they see the authenticity of this team and it excites them. This team’s overcome so much adversity to get to this point. I think with all those factors combined, I can see we’re an easy team to root for.” Second-year cornerback Jalen Mills agreed with Douglas with regard to their appeal around the country. “I think it’s from all the adversity we’ve fought through,” Mills said. “You think back, going through our season, we lost our starting running back, we lost our starting left tackle, we lost our starting middle linebacker, our starting special teams players and our starting quarterback. We just

We were always counted out but we kept winning. That just shows what kind of unity we have and what type of team we have here. It’s very authentic and people really connect with this team.” Rookie runningback Corey Clement said he thought what attracts NFL fans to the Eagles this year is because they are a new and refreshing team. “For some reason I think people thought we came out of nowhere,” the South Jersey native said. “I think that’s what brought so much attention to us, plus I knew from the day I stepped on the field, on the first day of training camp to the first week of the season, every player had a purpose. And I think it’s purpose that drove this team this year. Purpose to be able to get here and we’re here right now.”
Johnson had his own unique idea why NFL fans across America are connecting with the Eagles. “They see the Patriots in the Super Bowl every year and it’s like watching the same show of ‘Friends’ or something,” Johnson said. “Every night if you’re watching the same show, would you get tired of it? Yeah...so what are you going to do? They’re a great team, we all know what they can do...we are going to prepare and be ready, and I’m glad the nation is behind us.” Patriots fullback James Develin, who was born in West Chester and went to high school in Boyertown, admitted that it will be a bit awkward playing against the team he grew up following throughout his entire time growing up in the Delaware Valley. It seemed even harder for him to talk about his
Media Day is the day for dumb questions like “Who has the worst hair on the team?” or “If you could be a dog, what kind of dog would you want to be?” My dumb question? Who was the worst dancer this year? Choices were defensive tackle Fletcher Cox who tried and failed to do the “The Electric Slide” with teammates after an interception/ TD during the Eagles 31-3 win over the Chicago Bears, or Eagles owner Jeffery Lurie’s attempt at a hip-hop style dance routine in the locker room and on the field after each Eagles playoff win. “My only goal in those dance moves was not to embarrass myself,” Lurie told the media horde around him Monday. “That was it and get out of there because I think I’m poorly focused and poorly trained in dance moves.” OL Stefen Wisniewski: “I’m gonna go with Fletch,” Wisniewski said with a laugh. “I’m not going to make fun of the owner obviously...so I’ll go with Fletch.” LB Nigel Bradham didn’t like the choices: “Can I go with (LB) Najee Goode? He is the worst dancer,” Bradham said with a smile. “I don’t want deal with [those other choices]. But Najee was definitely worse than Fletcher.” Goode was not cool with being thrown under the bus by Bradham. Goode admitted he looked ridiculous attempting to do the “Electric Slide” that day, but insists there were mitigating circumstances that made him look like he had two left feet. “I am not the worst dancer on the team, not by far,” Goode claimed. “I’ve got moves they haven’t even seen yet. It kind of had a faulty thing after the pick-six and I was tired. “I want to explain that (poor dancing) to the media,” Goode continued, warming up as his memory warmed up. “I was at the front of the line and I didn’t know where we were at in the dance. And on top of that too, we had caught and interception and it went 60 yards! If you saw me walk off the field it was because I was super tired and I was super thirsty.” This Sunday, Eagles fans hope Goode and the rest of the Eagles are just Super. Come Sunday, it’s all on the line
I
n the end, it comes down to the line of scrimmage. And that’s where the Philadelphia Eagles have the advantage in Super Bowl LII, and that’s where they have to beat, dominate and decimate the New England Patriots on Sunday. Do that and the Eagles come home with a Lombardi Trophy. Simple as that. “The way this defense is built, we’re going to try to wear down an offensive line with our depth and with our energy up front, defensive end Chris Long said. “New England has great weapons and they have the best offense in the league. But if we take care of our business up front, we’re going to be in good shape defensively. That’s kind of what it always comes down to in football. The investments the Eagles made in the last two offseasons to bolster the lines of scrimmage have paid off handsomely. Two years ago, the team used two draft picks on offensive linemen, Isaac Seumalo and Halapoulivaati Vaitai, and they signed veteran guard/center Stefen Wis-

‘New England has great weapons and they have the best offense in the league. But if we take care of our business up front, we’re going to be in good shape defensively.’ – Eagles defensive end Chris Long
niewski in free agency. While Seumalo has not yet found his place on the field (although the Eagles still think highly of him), the impact made by Vaitai and Wisniewski cannot be understated. Vaitai replaced All-Pro Jason Peters at left tackle, the quarterback’s blind side. While Vaitai has had a shaky moment or two, and while he’s going to face a lot of commotion and pressure from the Patriots as they try to overload him, for the most part he’s been good. Against Minnesota
and Pro Bowl end Everson Griffen in the NFC championship game, Vaitai was more than good. He was great. He was a difference maker. “I think the more I play, the more I’m going to improve, he said. “It’s about comfort and just having a good feel out there. I feel confident in my abilities. Wisniewski, considered a jack-of-alltrades backup player here, instead has stabilized the offensive line with his play at left guard. He’s been invaluable after Seumalo struggled as a starter in the first few games of the season.
Vaitai and Wisniewski comprise the left side of the offensive line. The rest of the group is just dynamite, with center Jason Kelce named an All-Pro, right guard Brandon Brooks a Pro Bowler and right tackle Lane Johnson voted both as a Pro Bowl player and an All-Pro. “We feel like we can dominate teams, Johnson said. On the defensive line, well, the Eagles come hard. And they keep coming. Tackles Fletcher Cox and Tim Jernigan provide the thunder and lightning inside. Eagles Autism Challenge kicks into higher gear

n celebration of the team’s NFC championship, the Eagles Autism Challenge announced a new promotion to prospective bike participants. Thanks to the generosity of a season ticket holder, a $50,000 matching gift donation will be extended to new Eagles Autism Challenge registrants who sign up for either the 15-mile, 30-mile or 50-mile bike routes. The first $50,000 in online donations raised by new bike participants will be matched, dollar for dollar, up to the fundraising maximum. “This has been a truly remarkable season, and I’m thrilled to share in this excitement with our loyal fans who have supported us all year long, said Chairman and CEO Jeffrey Lurie. “Our on-field success is a direct result of the relentless passion and
enthusiasm that our fans bring to every game. As a token of our appreciation, and on behalf of a very generous Eagles fan, we are proud to announce this matching gift donation to new bike participants who want to help advance autism research with us. “Your generosity will support our collective vision of bringing thought leaders in the field of autism together to collaborate on innovative research with a transformational impact throughout the world. The Eagles Autism Challenge matching gift applies only to new bike participants who register by kickoff of the Super Bowl on Sunday at 6:30 p.m. Those participants’ online donations will be matched until kickoff of the Super Bowl up to a maximum of $50,000 in total donations. Registration fees and any other costs or fees associated with the Eagles Autism
Challenge are not subject to the promotion and will not be matched. The Eagles Autism Challenge, to be held on May 19 at Lincoln Financial Field, 1 Lincoln Financial Field Way, is an annual landmark cycling and 5K run/walk fundraising event dedicated to raising funds for innovative research and programs to help unlock the mystery of Autism Spectrum Disorder. The event features cycling routes of 15, 30 and 50 miles, along with a family-friendly 5K run/walk, and will direct 100 percent of participant-raised funds to autism research and programs at three nationally recognized research institutions – Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, Drexel University and Thomas Jefferson University and Jefferson Health. and Derek Barnett bring the boom off the edge. The Eagles go eight players deep up front, and they use all of their weapons. It’s been the team’s bread and butter all season. The Eagles win the line of scrimmage and they win the game. The formula doesn’t change for this one. Quarterback Nick Foles gets most of the attention, as do the players who score the touchdowns. But on offense and on defense, it’s about the line of scrimmage, and that’s where the Eagles will beat the Patriots and win the Super Bowl on Sunday evening.
