efore Lisa Kaplan can pull up the School District pie chart that lays out her building’s ethnic diversity, she has to fill out quickly the details for a grant she’s received for Blended Learning. That’s her. The Andrew Jackson School, 1213 S. 12th St., principal and 21st and Ritner streets native is a master at attracting help from outside of her K-8 building when budgetary times are tight. She writes the grants? She nods solemnly. This week, SPR is in her building to check on a budding and fruit-

ful partnership with the Shipley School. Though it’s been six years in the works, this is the second year of Shipley students traveling from Bryn Mawr for the Positive Paws After-School Enrichment Club designed for first- and second- graders. And it’s a hit. Kaplan’s sister in arms is the dynamic Maria Stroup, Shipley’s Director of Service Learning, who drives 12 students to Passyunk Square and back on Tuesdays as an extension of her school’s Social, Emotional and Ethical Development (SEED) program. In one sense, it’s very simple – engage kids with surprise mentors and just shower them with attention, en-

gagement, and play. In the process, Jackson pupils get just a little extra adoration in their lives. “Lisa and I met and we dreamed, and we not only have this weekly program Positive Paws, but all grades 9 through 12 spend a day of service at the school working in classrooms, Stroup explains. “This year, because of the strength of the program, we had 78 students sign up, so we had to divide the first half of the year into first grade, and the second half of the year is second grade, and we can only take 12 students in a van at a time. Tuesday was the beginning of the second grade session and Stroup was organizing the snacks she’d

brought. “We start out with a healthy snack of fruits and vegetables, so we try to provide a nutritious snack and during that time we have crazy questions in order to get to know the kids, Stroup says. “Then we have crazy fun for the last half-hour. Snack is apple wedges, cubed watermelon, 100 percent juice boxes and Cheez-Its. The question: “If you could pick any animal, it doesn’t matter the size, any animal in the world to have in your home as a pet – what animal would it be and what would they eat every day? she asks of four groups of children, ASS PAWS ^OUS ,,

Letters: Ac^S` ]QQOaW]\a To our Readers: Only three days remain until the Carolina Panthers and Denver Broncos take to Levi’s Stadium to contest Super Bowl 50. No matter which squad you like or expect to win, the occasion promises to be a contest for the ages because football, unlike the other major sports, decides its ultimate victor through only one contest. While a best-of-seven series builds intense drama, what is better than having two teams executing their plans with the knowledge that there is no tomorrow? How is this, though, relevant to our lives in South Philly? The duel will certainly inspire many people to hold parties that will include cheers for the players and the commercials, but beyond that chance for

camaraderie, the event and sports overall serve as perfect metaphors for our need to give it our all each day no matter our lot in life. The Panthers and the Broncos have four quarters to prove their might. How finite! Show yours every moment, and persist no matter the odds. Joseph Myers South Philadelphia Review editor

Digs for Donald To the Editor: Since I have watched every Republican and Democratic debate, I am certain that Donald Trump’s absence was not a factor at all in the Jan. 28 event. The candidates on stage proceeded to insult one another

on a regular basis without Mr. Trump’s prodding. The mere fact that he boycotted the debate because of moderator Megyn Kelly is laughable. Does he honestly think that his gesture was a sign of strength? I viewed it as a sign of weakness. Was he concerned that he would be unable to address Ms. Kelly’s questions, or did he finally realize his total incompetence on all political issues? Does Mr. Trump have a need to control any and all facets of his campaign, including the debates? He may have been able to bully in a boardroom with a business deal, but the American people have seen his true colors. This fact becomes evident when Mr. Trump makes a feeble attempt to describe any of his economic or foreign policy plans. His lack of specific details indicates his lack of knowledge. Do Americans really want him to represent them as the President of the United States? I shudder when I visualize him in a meeting with Kim Jong-Un or Vladimir Putin. Donald Trump is an embarrassment, a buffoon, and a laughingstock. He has no place in a political arena. It is only a matter of time before America realizes that he is not the answer to our problems. The polls may indicate otherwise, but we need to be patient. The tide will turn. Carol Pasquarello South Philadelphia

truly touched. Although, it is almost impossible for me to begin to thank everyone personally, I would like to take a moment, and express our personal thanks to Captain Frank Milillo, who went above and beyond for Gary during his illness, and Juan “Ace Delgado, Linda Redanauer, Mike Duffy, and Melissa Kromchad for your support and all your hard work in making a benefit for a truly good man so successful. I know many more of you helped and donated your time and baskets. To try to name everyone would be impossible. Please know we know and we thank you. Lastly, to Tushar Shah, General Manager of the Holiday Inn, who not only was a true friend but also made sure this event happened. The love and support we have received during this most difficult time will remain in our hearts and with our family forever. Gary truly loved his job, the people of South Philadelphia and all those he worked with. He really did consider you all his friends. You have all touched our hearts as Gary did yours. Thank you all for loving Gary as much as we did. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. Marie Harkins and the Harkins Family Northeast Philadelphia

in Marconi Monday. At 6:09 p.m., police responded to a robbery-in-progress call on the 2300 block of South 15th Street and met with the complainant at 15th and Wolf streets, learning he had been walking his dog southbound on 15th Street toward Ritner Street when an unknown figure approached him, pulled up his shirt, showed the butt of a gun, and demanded his jewelry and wallet, Detective Danielle Tolliver of South Detective Division said. The victim complied, with a Rolex watch and ring and a diamond ring joining the wallet as casualties. The thief, whom the complainant described as white, in his 40s, 6 foot, 200 pounds and wearing a blue jean jacket, blue jeans, and tan work boots, headed southbound on 15th Street. t 8:40 p.m. Sunday, police responded to a person-with-a-gun radio call on the 1800 block of South Columbus Boulevard and met with the second complainant, learning that while he sat in his 2013 Ford Escape with the other victim, a man approached the vehicle and began taking pictures and tried to open the doors, Detective Danielle Tolliver of South Detective Division said. While the complainants were inside, they contend the individual used a hammer to strike the driver side window, with the display leading them to exit the ride. The chief complainant, who suffered lacerations to her feet because of the broken glass, told officers the aggressor is her husband, Ricardo Sanchez, whom they reportedly observed attempting to escape via his own vehicle. “Young Frankenstein, “Spaceballs, and “Robin Hood: Men in Tights live until 120. 6) Christopher Plummer: Death made off with Christopher Lee June 7 last year. It had better be content to have claimed only one unforgettable thespian named Christopher for the foreseeable future and should let the 86-year-old Plummer grace us with at least a few more films. 5) Anthony Hopkins: I first saw this now-78-year-old as a 43-year-old in Lynch’s “The Elephant Man and thought, “This guy is good! He has proven me wrong over and over again. He’s outstanding. 4) Betty White: Have you ever had the feeling that certain people are invincible? This 94-year-old Golden Girl makes my short list of folks to whom that adjective applies. Thank you for being a friend to our collective sense of humor. 3) Gene Hackman: This 86-year-old has crafted an amazing filmography and has entranced numerous generations with his diverse gifts. I find myself stunned knowing that he has not appeared in a film since 2004, and if he never appears in another film (How painful it was to type that!), thank you, sir, for so many unforgettable turns, my favorite being your role as the patriarch in “The Royal Tenenbaums. 2) Al Pacino: Whether on a stage or in a film, Pacino has always let us ask him about his business because it is the task of being a dynamic actor. At an age where many folks are reaching for prunes, the 75-year-old is pruning perceptions that he has become a shadow of himself as a performer. See last year’s “Danny Collins, also starring Plummer, for proof. 1) James Earl Jones: That voice! I became introduced to this now-85-year-old through his voice contributions as Darth Vader in the “Star Wars trilogy. When I saw him in corporeal form, with “Field of Dreams being my first such inspection, I found his presence amazingly honest and heartwarming. If you want a laugh, catch his Season 7 appearance on “The Big Bang Theory. His exchanges with character Sheldon Cooper will have you likewise hoping he has many more chances to project confidence and conviction no matter the odds or the opponent. Mortality has taken loved ones from each of us and has silenced celebrities whom we have come to consider excellent influences on our lives, with this year being a particularly opportunistic year for death to lord over the famous, with David Bowie and Alan Rickman, among others, shuffling off their mortal coils. Five weeks into the year, I am already fearing that our enemy will strike again, so, I have compiled a list of celebrities whom I hope death does not touch with its cold hand this year. 10) Don Rickles: Coming in at 89 years old, this legendary funnyman has been schtick-ing it to us for nearly seven decades. It would be wonderful if he could increase that by a couple more. 9) Carol Burnett: Anybody who can score an eponymous show usually has some serious chops (Notable exception: The Vanilla Ice Project), and this 82-yearold icon definitely tickles funny bones to this day. I would hate to have tears replace laughs among her many fans. 8) David Lynch: Certainly not everyone’s cup of tea, this 70-year-old legend has tallied an impressive number of film credits. With “Twin Peaks set to return next year, he had better not imitate the show’s Laura Palmer and break hearts by passing too soon. 7) Mel Brooks: This man has seemed 89 for 50 years! To Help My Patients, I First Had to Help Myself. Bariatric and Metabolic Surgery at Jefferson “As a Certified Nursing Assistant, I spend my days helping others. But when I hit 405 pounds, I knew it was time to help myself. That’s why I decided on weight-loss surgery at Jefferson. Their experts put me at ease right away, and the surgery was minimally invasive, so I was able to be back with my patients in no time. Since then, I’ve lost half my weight. And the back pain, the type 2 diabetes and high cholesterol I used to have? I’m not carrying that around with me, either. Velour had a sleeve gastrectomy, a minimally invasive procedure with short recovery times and an excellent record of success.

A Queen Village dweller will hawk a solution to the silliness of dealing with tangled headphones. ÂŽĂŠ0g 8]aS^V ;gS`a Review Editor

V P HOTO B Y TINA G ARCEAU

anessa Chan cherishes challenges. Tabbing herself “a tinkerer and “a solution seeker, she never wants to let a nuisance render her eternally flummoxed and desires means to minimize a hindrance’s influence. Having considered the corporate world too constricting, the resident of the 500 block of Queen

Street chose to be her own boss last year, founding re.design, a burgeoning entity whose initial product, loopit, addresses the ever-annoying task of handling tangled headphones. “It drives me insane that so many people have this problem, the 42-year-old said of struggles to enjoy auditory enlightenment. “I feel fortunate to have this opportunity to diminish their frustration. The Queen Village inhabitant launched a Kickstarter campaign Jan. 26, netting 75 percent of her $15,000 goal over the first day. Herself a victim of vexation when finding headphones knotted, she dabbled with her potential answer last February and immersed herself in loopit’s development in the summer. “There’s a warm feeling in my heart around it, Chan said of re.design. “I think loopit could be a great start to

B?<;IJOB;I my non-corporate-identity attempts at easing burdens. Plus, I’m meeting many new people, and that’s great since I love making connections. A re.design release explains that her invention works by using strong magnetic clasps that easily link and detach, with one set built in near the earbuds and the other near the audio jack and a microphone allowing owners to answer calls while on the go. The promotional material also notes that those seeking to don the item as an accessory can alter loopit to form “a fashionable yet understated necklace. With increasing attention going toward her ingenuity, Chan appreciates each source of support but strays from thinking that there are no figurative knots in her future. “I’m taking risks, and I’m expecting to make mistakes, she said of continuing to tout her product, which has utility and design patents pending and whose Kickstarter promotion runs through Feb. 26. “Leaving my former line of employment was a big step, and this is an intense, even scary, change, but I hope it’s going to be pretty rewarding. In the throes of pre-marketing bliss, Chan, a perennial ponderer of how to continue to effect positive change in the global sense, loves that local figures have shown enthusi-

ÂŽ a ] c b V ^ V W Z Z g ` Sd W Se Q ] [

asm for her concept, particularly because of her affinity for South Philly. “I live in a lovely, lovely neighborhood, she said. “Really, though, the city is just fantastic, and I do see it as a great help for anyone looking for inspiration. I am extremely excited, for example, over how many people want to help me. ALONG WITH PROUDLY proclaiming herself the nouns that began this profile, Chan does not shy away from her revered status as “a science geek. The Hong Kong native always coveted ways to court knowledge as a girl, with numbers, in particular, fostering her analytical fascination. “They helped me to want to explore the world and get at the heart of some very interesting matters, she said of mathematics’ magnetism. “I wanted to be more aware of the problems that people face and attach them with as much competence as possible. An Ivy League education through the University of Pennsylvania commenced her crusade, with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology endowing her with her doctorate. Stints in Germany and New York preceded her arrival in Philadelphia, with all of her 15-year stretch in the City of Brotherly Love occurring in South Philly. Logging 14

years for McKinsey & Company, where she had served as a partner co-leading its innovation practice, Chan took the “entrepreneurial plunge last year, having acquired amazingly influential experiences through the global management consulting firm. Always enticed to have a reply to inquiries on what companies can offer to counter diverse dilemmas, she felt finding answers on her own would test her resolve and energize her call to create. “I definitely don’t like being idle for too long, and I often can’t be anyway, the mother of Karina and Ariana and wife to Martin van der Helm said. “There comes a time, too, when you have to question if what you’re choosing to keep you active is the best fit for you. Where I am now, I love having the confidence and the conviction to put myself out there; it’s really helping me to gain a better sense of what each of us can contribute to the world at large. Pitching her plan to QVC at last year’s Pennsylvania Conference for Women, Chan saw that appearance as her biggest push to “throw myself out there and has been a non-stop, essentially “one-woman shop since that November opportunity. Should Kickstarter prove profitable, she will look to bring loopit to market by May. With assistance from a China-based contract manufac-

turer and encouragement from her girls and spouse, the constant craver of calls to action sees her present endeavor not as a route to personal glory but a guide to combined achievement. “I’m one human and have this urge to continue to reach out to people to make a difference and learn from their experiences, too, Chan noted, adding that redesign.studio includes a space for people to post their gripes about daily life, with their responses likely to incite future projects. “I have to think outside of a few boxes, and that appeals to me on many levels. She has proven a terrific genetic mentor for her children, too, dubbing them “rabid creators. Delighted to watch as they gain “a healthy dose of how the world works, she looks to find herself perpetually motivated to reward their curiosity and hers simultaneously. “I’m hungry to keep this going, Chan said. “There’s so much to explore and poke around with. SPR Email vanessa@redesign.studio, or visit kickstarter.com/projects/872377761/loopit. The last infusion

ssuming I have not been lied to by the powers in control of my treatment, I had my last chemo infusion on Jan. 26. Why would I think there is a giant conspiracy in charge of my treatment that involves drilling my teeth and messing with my sex organs? I’m currently watching Fox’s revival of “The X-Files,â€? that’s why. I’m starting to wonder whether my six months of treatment were elements of some sort of plot to implant alien DNA in me. If you thought these columns were getting weird the last few months, hang on to your seat. Seriously. I received my treatment at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital at 10th and Chestnut streets. These days when you mention Jefferson, you have to state the location. You see, Jefferson has become like CVS in the word of mergers and spreading its brand over the entire Delaware Valley. Pretty soon, I will get a list of survey questions from Jefferson asking that I give my opinion on my recent treatment. I want to share my remarks with you ahead of time, some serious and some not-so-serious (my Uncle Nunzi says there is no such separation in my mind since I went “pazzoâ€? years ago): 1. I love Jefferson. The staff there has saved my life twice in seven years. I was only kidding about the conspiracy against me (but what is that piercing sound in my head unless maybe it’s that guy who plays guitar for Rage Against the Machine?). Anyway, I recommend getting the Infusion Center on Chestnut Street more staff and more space because these hard working folks deserve it. 2. Why is it I seem to be alternating typing English and German on my keyboard? Is it the chemo side effect of the tingling in all of my fingertips, or is there a more sinister meaning? (Uncle Nunzi claims a few stray k’s in my typed words just mean I can’t spell or that I’ve read too many Philip Kerr novels). 3. I recommend the introduction of flavor into intravenous liquids. I know this won’t be Joe Biden’s first priority in heading his new project to wipe out cancer in a year (a year, really??). You can’t imagine how nice that would be to ask for double dark chocolate with crème fraĂŽche in your chemo infusion. If Big Pharma can put flavors in your TUMS, then why not? And, Big Pharma, we will then call you our friend. 4. Figure out a way to eliminate sending you home after your chemo infusion with a pump that has to be disconnected 42 hours

ÂŽ a ] c b V ^ V W Z Z g ` Sd W Se Q ] [

later. The home nurses are nice, but the process prolongs the agony of the side effects, one of which is that you can’t eat ice cream out of the freezer until the treatments are over and the side effects are gone. I am still waiting to be able to eat Talenti’s Tiramasu without having freezer burn on my tongue. Shame on you, chemko or chemo. Stop it, you damn keyboard...or is it eyboard? 5. I realize why they placed that port in my chest for easier and more comfortable access, but can’t they also place an eagle tattoo over it to make a person look more manly or a butterfly to make someone seem more feminine? The damn thing looks like something the government would implant in your chest to listen to your personal conversations (are you reading this, Edward Snowden?) 6. I have received such great support from my wife, family, friends, and readers that I fear a day of reckoning is at hand. My wife has already hinted she expects me to clean up my office desk (the first discouraging words I’ve heard from her since last June when my problems all began, when my stomach swelled to the size of my considerable ego. There’s no “k in “began, is there? 7. During the course of my treatments, Jefferson discontinued its practice of providing free SUBWAY hoagies to the patients being treated that day. Disregarding the fact that SUBWAY was using a convicted child pornographer as its spokesperson (is it the Dutch or the Germans that sometimes use a double “a in spelling pornographer?), that wasn’t any reason to discontinue their sandwiches (4 “ks in sandwich?). Someone please find the money for Jeff to reinstitute the free sandwich for patients getting chemo infusion. I recommend using DiNic’s roast pork. 8. I want my nurse practitioner to get a raise. A big raise. Her name is Eleanor Vanderklok (no, that is not a misspelling--2 “Ks), and she works for Dr. Edith Mitchell at Jefferson Oncology. I’m not recommending a big raise because my mother was named Eleanor. Eleanor is everything you would want in the professional treating you - medically competent, compassionate, and skilled at listening, and how about her last name being spelled with 2 “Ks? I love you, Eleanor Vanderklok. I love my wife the most. I love all of you who have helped me get through this (unless it’s a plot by the Cigarette Man on “The X-Files). I love all my professional doctors and staff at the ever-expanding Jeff. I am looking forward to submitting more weird columns down the road unless I’m abducted by an alien spaceship. I thought Donald Trump was going to keep out all the aliens. Donald, I don’t think that wall will be high enough. SPR Comment at southphillyreview.com/opinion/cardella.

he Carolina Panthers and the Denver Broncos are California dreaming as they prepare for Super Bowl 50 in Santa Clara. If you are envisioning having a party to celebrate the historic matchup and are fretting over the possibility of enduring long takeout waits, take matters into your own oven, and try these Pepperoni Pizza Cups from Debbie Robb. The resident of the 300 block of Mercy Street calls on biscuits to serve as the huddle helmer for her list of ingredients and knows that if you make these an option in your strategy to please your guests, you will be a champion Sunday night and beyond. Enjoy the action, everyone! SPR

few days after the massive blizzard of January 1996, I wrote a column called “Blizzard Dream Food. I had been snow-bound for days when all of a sudden who should appear in my kitchen but Julia Child. “Phyllis, dearie, you have been cooking and running the dishwasher day and night. You need a break. Just click your heels together three times and all your favorite dishes from Philadelphia restaurants will appear on your kitchen table, she said. I knew Julia. She liked to call people “dearie. Well, dear readers, she appeared in my kitchen last week after Mother Nature dumped more than 22 inches of snow on our city. Here’s what appeared. Several quarts of New England clam chowder and dozens of jumbo icy cold, already shucked cherrystone clams came from The Oyster House courtesy of Sam Mink. Birra, 1700 E. Passyunk Ave., sent several pizzas and a jumbo Caesar salad complete with frika. Jones’s famous Cobb salad and several turkey dinners brought back memories of Thanksgiving. Chef Joncarl Lachman knows I adore his pickled herring and homemade bread. He also surprised me with a seafood stew and a tagine from Neuf, 943 S. Ninth St. Lee Styer of Fond, 1537 S. 11th St., is famous for his sweetbreads. There is not one chef in the city to match his inspiring recipe. His wife, Jesse, a talented pastry chef, sent cookies, little cakes and homemade ice cream. Over at Tre Scalini, 1915 E. Passyunk Ave., bowls of simmering mussels in white wine and garlic and a tender veal chop stuffed with broccoli rabe were prepared and soon made an appearance. Metropolitan Bakery offered a challah, several baguettes and a jumbo loaf of seven-grain bread. My friends at DiBruno’s, 930 S. Ninth St., put together an antipasto consisting of imported meats, especially Proscuitto di Parma, cheeses, roasted red peppers, a myriad of olives, marinated artichokes and a jar of fig jam. I had fun building my own hoagie using these ingredients. Not the fig jam, of course. Lynn Rinaldi of Paradiso, 1627 E. Passyunk Ave., is the only chef I know who roasts stuffed breast of veal. She sent enough for a small army. Rinaldi also prepares escargot in a number of ways. The recipe changes with the season. The one she sent was classic garlic and butter. The foie gras at Bibou, 1009 S. Eighth St., is second to none. Chef Pierre Calmers sent an entire lobe of Hudson Valley foie gras two ways: prepared simply seared and made into a torchon that takes several days to make. Since it was a blizzard, Calmers also put together a duck confit, a hearty cassoulet and some of his delicious

homemade bread. Since I was bowled over by his goat stroganoff, Chef Scott Schroeder of Hungry Pigeon, 743 S. Fourth St., offered a large pot of his tasty concoction along with some braised vegetables. Baker/ pastry chef Matt O’Malley regaled me with his marvelous homemade breads and an entire chocolate cake. It is getting harder and harder to find a fried seafood combination platter anywhere in the city. Anastasi Seafood, 1101 S. Ninth St., does it. The platter consisted of fried shrimp, scallops, flounder and a crab cake. They were so thoughtful; they included several lemons and tartar sauce. I’ve enjoyed brunch and dinner at Monsu, 901 Christian St., in the South Ninth Street Italian Market. Last summer, I feasted on homemade pasta and a marvelous tiramisu. The site sent an entire pan of this luscious dessert, which I enjoyed for several days. Pat’s King of Steaks, 1301 E. Passyunk Ave., and Jim’s Steaks, 400 South St., sent cheesesteaks. John’s Roast Pork, 14 E. Snyder Ave., sent, you guessed it, a hearty roast pork with provolone and broccoli rabe. The good people at Hawthornes, 738 S. 11th St., knew I would need warming fare for Sunday brunch. Pancakes, fluffy omelettes, and the famous crab cake Benedict were enjoyed on the Sunday after the storm hit. I still think the Devil’s Den, 1148 S. 11th St., grills one of the best burgers in the city. The ratio of beef to bun is spot on. It arrived medium-rare and topped with cheese. I don’t like my burgers fussy and fancy. Sonny D’Angelo sent me an array of his homemade sausages from 909 S. Ninth St. I simply reheated them a bit and served them with spaghetti with marinara sauce courtesy of Villa di Roma, 936 S. Ninth St. By the time Monday rolled around, I still had leftovers. But I did get a surprise delivery. Isgro’s, 1009 Christian St., showed up with a dozen cannoli. We are in the midst of a thaw. The snow is slowly disappearing. Still, it is February. We just might be hit with a blizzard again. SPR Comment on this restaurant or review at southphillyreview.com/food-and-drink/reviews.

Antney’s Grub’s Sircrabagus Sandwich

dle hands are definitely not the devil’s workshop as far as Anthony Renzulli is concerned. Finding himself mostly unoccupied one day four years ago, the Passyunk Square occupant took to the kitchen at Grumpy’s Bar, 1525 S. Ninth St., and initiated his culinary journey, a blessing that has led to his ownership status at Antney’s Grub, 2655 S. Juniper St. “I had no cooking experience before doing that at Grumpy’s, but I know what good food is supposed to taste like, so this hasn’t been too taxing on me, the proprietor said from his Lower Moyamensing-situated eatery. “I want people to enjoy these items just as much as I would, so I take great pride in what we do here. The businessman believes “time, dedication, and the right product have helped his site to thrive since its June 2013 opening and regards each regard from customers with humility, aspiring to make each option on his vast menu a reflection of his professionalism. “People know my reputation as someone who really wants to please others, Renzulli said. “The word-of-mouth success that we’ve had amazes me, and we want to keep getting better. Seeking a second location in Wildwood, the provisions provider has already proven his local proficiency, winning the ’13 Great Meatball Matchup at the American Swedish Historical Museum, 1900 Pattison Ave.; claiming the best Pork and Chicken Cutlet Sandwich at the South Philly Review’s ’15 Sandwich Review at the Mummers Museum, 1100 S. Second St.; and ranking third among entries from 20 counties in last year’s Philadelphia Business Journal assessment of cheesesteaks. Fond of all his

food, he chose to share the recipe for his revered space’s Sircrabagus Sandwich. “It’s definitely one of our favorites, he said of the protein packer. “It’s not that complex to make, and I think that’s great because I want for people to enjoy my food, and if the process is too involved or tries to do too much, that can take away from the joy of having a great meal. Renzulli, who once made his bones through the music industry, is showing that his beat goes on in a different context. “I just want people to be happy, he said. “My food is how I try to accomplish that.

rofessional basketball franchises often reward fans through deals whenever squads hit certain benchmarks such as scoring 100 points in a contest. Because of his lofty faculties, Ss. Neumann-Goretti High School, 1736 S. 10th St., ought to ponder pleasing supporters courtesy of some sort of promotion whenever Dhamir Cosby-Roundtree tallies more than one dunk per game. Notching four slams Sunday, the 6-foot8 junior helped the Saints to a 91-75 win over Archbishop Ryan and up their Catholic League mark to 11-0. “Everybody buys into this system, and we just want to keep getting better and winning, the forward said following the afternoon duel. “Each step takes us one step closer to our ultimate goal, which is bringing home championships. The Southwest Philly inhabitant and his East Passyunk Crossing-based peers registered their 18th win against only two losses and continued to stoke the confidence of backers and prognosticators who eagerly await playoff time. Having fallen in last year’s league championship tilt to rival Roman Catholic High School, a loss that ended the program’s six-year reign as parochial conquerors, the Saints certainly want to will themselves back to glory. “It was rough to put in a great year and then come up short, Cosby-Roundtree said of succumbing to the Cahillites. “We even struggled early this year with our defensive chemistry, but we’re pretty solid now, and we know we have to keep hounding people to be successful. Coach Carl Arrigale’s troops rebounded from that University of Pennsylvania-situated setback at The Palestra to capture the City title with a 77-74 lastsecond decision over Imhotep Institute Charter High School and collected a fifth Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association Class AAA state championship over fellow Catholic League constituent Archbishop Carroll High School. Helming what he dubbed “a veteran club, Arrigale, of the 2900 block of South 15th Street, knew that the Ryan Raiders would

want to disturb the standings Sunday, with Cosby-Roundtree determined to send the guests back to Northeast Philly with their fifth league loss. The hosts helped themselves to a 9-0 edge immediately, with the three-senior, two-junior rotation swarming the ball. The guests managed to collect a frustrating amount of offensive rebounds in the frame, but those grabs most often resulted in additional misses, whereas NeumannGoretti needed no such friendly bounces, draining perimeter and interior attempts with ease, with Cosby-Roundtree soaring for his initial dunk as the quarter neared its conclusion. Sporting a 22-12 lead after the opening eight minutes, they looked to quicken their already impressive pace in the second session, with star guard Quade Green particularly showing off the speed and tenacity that have made him a recruiter’s delight. The junior marksman, who recently hit 1,000 career points, knocked down two three-pointers in the quarter, with senior guard and Towson University signee Zane Martin tallying seven points to swell the lead to 46-25 as halftime commenced. “We knew we were playing well, but we wanted to show more determination after the break, Cosby-Roundtree said. “This is the time of year when everybody’s looking to make a play, and you can’t sit back and not go hard just because you have a big lead. THE TOWERING CONTRIBUTOR starting playing organized ball the summer of his eighth-grade year and has acquired a reputation as a defensive dynamo. Earning Second-Team All-Catholic honors last year, he looked forward to becoming a more competent cog for Arrigale this campaign, feeling he needed to increase his offensive versatility. “That part of my game has definitely evolved, Cosby-Roundtree said of being more involved in the pursuit of baskets. “I credit that to extra time working on fundamentals and being eager to be a better finisher. The Raiders had to be hoping that he had not put in so much time to strengthen his offensive identity, as he made the

third-quarter a concise sample for any scout who has thought of having him clog the lane on collegiate hardwood floors. Eager to feed the big man, Green, Martin, and senior guards Rasheed Browne and Vaughn Covington helped Cosby-Roundtree to dominate thirdquarter action, as he collected 11 points, with three awe-inspiring dunks quieting the Raiders’ zealots. The visitors outscored the Saints 24-21 in the period, but he and the others had no intentions of falling at home, especially as they look to obtain the top seed for the postseason. “There are no easy games because everyone is talented, Cosby-Roundtree said. “We believe in ourselves, but nobody is invincible. There were some strange plays in the last quarter, but we’re not going to think too much about them. We have more games to prepare for. With little to stop them from absorbing a defeat, the Raiders proved they will be a difficult foe when the playoffs start on Wednesday, again outscoring Arrigale’s gang in the fourth. Six Saints entered the scoring column in the final eight minutes, and Cosby-Roundtree, for anyone who might have thought he had chosen to work only on his offensive game on the day, drew great reactions when he swatted a shot into the stands. “I’ve been working on my defensive timing, and I’m happy with where that is right now, the 17-year-old, who finished with 21 points and 11 rebounds, said. “I think we’re all happy with where we are on both sides of the ball. With interest from many schools, including Temple and Villanova universities, he stated he feels fortunate to have a good number of looks but that his focus is on Neumann-Goretti’s final two league games, including Super Bowl Sunday’s home matchup against Conwell-Egan, and on the playoffs. “I have no fear of the competition, he said. “I’m not worried about freezing because I’ll do everything I can to help this team to win. SPR Contact Editor Joseph Myers at jmyers@southphillyreview.com or ext. 124.
