Every dog has its day City set for Thursday parade celebrating historic championship win for the Eagles By Bill Gelman SOUTH PHILLY REVIEW

W

hen the Philadelphia Phillies won the World Series back in 2008, many still remember being part of the postparade celebration at Citizens Bank Park, including when Chase Utley dropped a F-bomb in the middle of his victory speech. Don’t expect to see one of the Philadelphia Eagles pull off a similar stunt at Lincoln Financial Field tomorrow, as the organization’s first-ever Super Bowl parade and celebration, which is expected to be use-a-sick-day occasions for millions of Eagles fans, will be heading north on Broad Street. The City of Philadelphia sent out a Tweet on Monday morning pertaining to the preliminary plans. “The City of Philadelphia will host a parade this Thursday for our 2018 Super Bowl Champions! Go Eagles. The parade will tentatively start at 11 a.m. at Broad & Pattison, heading to north to the Art Museum. Further info will be announced Tuesday at 9 a.m. #FlyEaglesFly. #EaglesParade.” It will be the second massive Super Bowl celebration in less than a week, as the more disorganized parade of fans filled the streets of Philadelphia on Sunday See EAGLES, page 6>>

EAGLES: City elated after first-ever Super Bowl win for the team

<<Continued from page 1 night right after the Eagles defeated the defending champion New England Patriots, 41-33, in Super Bowl LII. This version included some damaged storefront windows, poles and cars, but for the most part, was a whole lot of dancing and chanting with some random fireworks. Following the Eagles victory, Mayor Jim Kenney wasted little time sharing his excitement about this milestone moment in Eagles history. “For so many who have called themselves Eagles fans for a generation, this is the day, the game, the season, and the team we’ve dreamed of. The 2017-18 Philadelphia Eagles are Super Bowl Champions, and they’ve brought tremendous joy to hundreds of thousands throughout the City and region,” the mayor said. “They consistently wowed us with their dynamic play and relentless pursuit of victory. Their ‘Next Man Up’ mentality when injuries arose was inspiring to anyone who has ever faced a setback, as was their willingness to embrace the role of underdogs. They looked another storied football franchise in the eyes, and never blinked. “So to every member of the Eagles, from owners Jeff and Tina Lurie, and Christina Weiss Lurie, to Howie Roseman and the entire front office staff, to Doug Pederson and his coaches, and to the players who won our hearts with their resilient and exciting play: thank you. You are champions, and your accomplishments will forever be part of the rich history of Philadelphia sports.” Archbishop of Philadelphia Charles J. Chaput also shared a message of congratulations. “If the great boxer Jimmy Braddock was the ‘Cinderella Man’ – an underdog, implausible winner – the Eagles are the Cinderella Team, a whole organization of character, courage and refusal to quit. God bless them all, and their families, and the wonderful city (our city) they call home. “Congratulations to the Philadelphia Eagles on their incredible victory in Super Bowl LII!” Chaput said. The underdog story of these Philadelphia Eagles even has a big following from Hollywood A-listers, including the likes of Bradley Cooper, who was sitting in the owner’s box with Lurie at U.S. Bank Stadium, and Kevin Hart, along with Eagles season ticket holder Mike Trout, who is an all-star outfielder for the Los Angeles Angels. Future Hall-of-Fame quarterback Tom Brady and his New England Patriots may have five rings, but Eagles fans can finally say their team has one. Yes, it may have taken three Super Bowl appearances to get it, but they got it done, even after losing five All-Pro players to injury. The 58-year championship drought from when the Eagles last won a NFL Championship is over. It will very likely end up being the biggest celebration the City of Philadelphia has ever seen.

Eagles head coach Doug Pederson greets fans awaiting the team’s return home on Monday after their Super Bowl LII victory over the Patriots, 41-33, on Sunday, Feb. 4, in Minneapolis. A victory parade is scheduled in Philadelphia for Thursday, Feb. 8, at 11 a.m.

Everything you need to know about the parade

T

he City of Philadelphia held a press conference on Tuesday morning to announce the details of the Feb. 8 celebration to honor the 2018 Super Bowl Champion Philadelphia Eagles. The parade will start at 11 a.m., along a route that will stretch from the Lincoln Financial Field in the sports complex to the steps of the Philadelphia Art Museum. The parade route has been planned with the safety and security of fans in mind. Tremendous crowds are expected, and the city urges everyone attending the parade to celebrate safely and respectfully in a way that will make Philadelphia shine. The City, SEPTA and public safety-related agencies will provide consistent and up-to-date information via ReadyPhiladelphia and social media. The City urges everyone to stay informed by signing up for free text alerts. Simply text ReadyEagles to 888-777 to enroll. To customize your text alerts, or to receive email alerts, visit the Office of Emergency Man-

agement’s website phila.gov/ready. Updates will also be provided via Twitter, @PhiladelphiaGov; Instagram, @CityofPhiladelphia; and Facebook, facebook.com/cityofphiladelphia. The parade will step off from Broad Street and Pattison Avenue at 11 a.m., traveling northbound on Broad Street to South Penn Square, westbound on South Penn Square to 15th Street, northbound on 15th Street to JFK Boulevard, westbound on JFK Boulevard to 16th Street, northbound on 16th Street to the Benjamin Franklin Parkway, westbound on the Benjamin Franklin Parkway to Eakins Oval, terminating at the Philadelphia Museum of Art apron. A formal program will take place in front of the Philadelphia Museum of Art starting at 1 p.m. Video screens and other attractions will be placed along the parade route. The perimeter of the parade will be firmly secured and protected for maximum public safety. Throughout the event, the City will provide a strong presence of law enforcement and emergency medical services. City personnel and Eagles

officials will utilize a network of prevention and response services, which will be integrated, mobile and in constant communication. The public can do their part by using common sense. If you are attending the parade, make a plan regarding driving, public transit, parking, supervision of children and wearing comfortable attire. Be prepared to walk, as road closures near the parade route will lead to traffic congestion and delays. Fans are also advised to leave no bags or items unattended. In an emergency or to report a suspicious person, activity or item (a backpack, a package, a container), notify a police officer immediately or call 9-1-1. Do not try to open, move, cover or touch a suspicious item. With well over a million fans expected to attend the festivities, significant travel delays can be expected, and implementation of additional road closures and lane restrictions may be necessary during the event to maintain public safety. Motorists are advised to avoid the area by using alternate routes, See PARADE, page 7>>

REMEMBER WHEN

THEY WON IT ALL By Bill Gelman SOUTH PHILLY REVIEW

F

eb. 4, 2018, is a date Philadelphia Eagles fans will remember for the rest of their lives. They will not forget where they were sitting or standing when the clock struck zero, and the scoreboard showed the final score to Super Bowl LII, 41-33, in favor of the Birds. The defending champion New England Patriots would leave Minneapolis without the Vince Lombardi Trophy that they held a firm grip on over the past decade. Instead of pulling an old photo of the Packer Park Swim Club, a game of buck buck or a championship from decades ago, the Eagles winning their first title of the modern era NFL is worthy of a freeze frame. Twenty to 30 years down the road, some of us will be sitting around, and someone will randomly ask “remember when the Philadelphia Eagles won their first Super Bowl in franchise history?” Decades from now, this history-making night in Minneapolis will be a hot conversation piece between grandparents and their grandchil-

dren or old friends reminiscing over a cup of coffee at the Melrose Diner. Years from now, when ESPN, NBC, Fox and other networks replay clips of the greatest plays in Super Bowl history, it’s pretty

snap, pitch it to the tight end who proceeds to throw a 1-yard touchdown pass to his quarterback? The Corey Clement to Trey Burton to Nick Foles play was executed so well that we were left wondering what other magic tricks Pederson had up his sleeves. Who knows, someone in Hollywood may decide to pen the script for an underdog story based on actual events in which a so-called journeyman quarterback who was on the brink of retirement returns to his old team to serve as a backup to the franchise quarterback. When the star - Carson Wentz - goes down with a torn ACL, Eagles fans across the country start to fear that all hopes of a strong playoff run were shot. Everyone has doubts about this guy named Foles, who by the way enjoyed a career season in his previous stint with the Eagles. Here he was again, going head-to-head against Mr. Super Bowl Tom Brady, but it was the mystery man who walked away with Super Bowl MVP honors. The deck may have been stacked Photo courtesy of the Philadelphia Eagles against these Birds. Even the oddsmakers in Vegas had serious doubts, making the Eagles an underdog for all much a guarantee that Doug Pederson dialing up the “Philly Special” will make the cut, possibly three postseason games, including two at the Linc. even be mentioned as the greatest of all time. How All it seemed to do was fuel this team’s drive to often do you see a quarterback move up to the meet their destiny. PARADE: Team set to travel from sports complex to art museum

<<Continued from page 6 and allow for extra driving time when traveling in the vicinity. The City is asking that people refrain from double-parking, which creates congestion, limits traffic flow and is illegal. In terms of South Philadelphia, from 10 a.m. until approximately 6 p.m., all cross streets on Broad Street from Pattison Avenue to South Penn Square, from 13th Street to 15th Street will be closed, as will Pattison Avenue between 7th and 20th streets. Temporary “No Parking” signs will be posted. Vehicles parked in these locations dur-

ing posted hours will be relocated. During the parade, several bicycle lanes along Benjamin Franklin Parkway, Broad Street and streets in the vicinity will be inaccessible. Cyclists are advised to use caution when traveling in the area. There will be no access to the Schuylkill River Trail from the rear of the Philadelphia Museum of Art on Thursday. Westbound travel on the Schuylkill Travel will terminate at Paine Skate Park. SEPTA will be implementing a special parade day public transportation plan to ensure the safe arrival and departure of event goers. Visit septa.

org for complete details. To help fans celebrate the Eagles Super Bowl LII victory, SEPTA has partnered with Independence Blue Cross to offer free rides on the Broad Street and Market-Frankford Lines during the Championship Parade on Thursday. SEPTA will also make significant service adjustments, including limited stops on Regional Rail for service to-and-from Center City. If driving into Center City is necessary, commercial off-street parking lots and garages conveniently are located near the Benjamin Franklin Parkway, Broad Street and the stadium complex. Contact individual facilities in advance for rates

and availability, or visit the Philadelphia Parking Authority’s website, philapark.org for a list of parking options. For those who prefer watching from home or at the office, NBC10 and NBC Sports Philadelphia will provide extensive multi-platform coverage of the Super Bowl Champion Philadelphia Eagles parade. The celebration will air live on NBC10 and NBC Sports Philadelphia and stream on NBC10.com and NBCSportsPhiladelphia. com. – Bill Gelman

Impure thoughts

vangelical leader Tony Perkins recently gave Donald Trump a “mulligan” for having sex with a porn star. Leaving aside that this church leader shares a name with a gay film star whose most famous role was as a slasher in “Psycho,” I was mildly surprised. Not so much that a professed moral leader is willing to excuse Trump’s alleged gross behavior, but that he would use a golfing term in doing it. In case you are like me and haven’t swung a golf club in anger since you were too old for chip and putt, let me tell you what a “mulligan” is. It’s the word for allowing a less-thanadept golfer a do-over without penalty. Using Perkins’ logic, Trump should be granted a second term in order to get it right. Yet I must ask why Perkins would give the president a mulligan for his personal life? Political horse trading? You give Trump a pass for licentiousness and Perkins gets in return the president’s support for keeping transgender folks in the “correct” restrooms? Plus, right-to-life abortion issues and a cut in the corporate tax rates? Welcome to the pragmatic world of Evangelical Christianity. Blurs the line between Perkins and Mitch McConnell. A word is in order about presidents playing golf. Please stop complaining about our presidents playing too much golf. Liberals are upset that Trump spends so much time on the golf course. Conservatives were upset about Obama playing too much golf. Americans have been complaining about their presidents’ obsession with golf since the time of Dwight Eisenhower. If you can be an effective president, I don’t care if you spend your life on the 18th hole and your favorite drink is an Arnold Palmer. And I’m a guy who wouldn’t know a “bogey” from a “bacall.” To my way of thinking, Trump has screwed things up so badly, I wish he spent MORE time on the golf course and less time in the Oval Office. I really don’t understand what benefit evangelicals get from Trump anyway. Is it really so important protecting bakers from having to make wedding cakes for gays? Again, Mr. Tony Perkins, you’ve got the same name as a gay film star. But seriously folks, how do you refuse to sell wedding cakes to gay people? How does that work? I’m trying to imagine the likely scenario. Scene: the Melrose Diner. Customer: “Excuse me. I’d like to purchase a large butter cream cake for a wedding.” Employee: “Are you straight or gay?”

Tom

Cardella

Unless you ask the Melrose to decorate the cake with two grooms, who’s to know? By the way, I’m just using the Melrose as an example in the hope they’ll send me a free cake. I’m not accusing them of being anti-gay. If you allow a baker to deny you service because you’re gay, what next, the plumber? Incidentally, none of my gay friends would have the poor taste to want some corny decoration of two guys in tuxes on their cake anyway. So, I ask you, Mr. Perkins, is THIS worth giving Trump a mulligan? And how much territory does the mulligan cover? Personally, my belief is that any man that would trade the lovely Melania for a porn star doesn’t deserve a mulligan. If President Trump were interested in forgiveness for moral transgressions – insert the word “alleged” wherever your naïve heart takes you – he should become a Catholic. You go to confession. Say a “good act of contrition.” The priest not only gives you a mulligan so to speak, he keeps it a secret. You won’t find a good Catholic priest running to Michael Wolff with tales of the president’s escapades. His oath prevents him from doing so. Catholics get mulligans without getting Perkins involved. By the way, porn stars have to get more creative with their stage names. Stormy Daniels? Really. Sounds like a drink made with bourbon and ginger beer with a twist of lime. In my opinion, there is one major flaw in the ground rules for Catholic confession. When I received my Catholic instructions, the nuns told us that we were required to confess “impure thoughts, words, and deeds.” I’ve always felt that was grossly unfair to those of us men who are filled with “impure thoughts,” but never act on them. There is, I believe, scientific evidence that men have impure thoughts every seven seconds (and I think that includes while we’re in church). In fact, if you’re going to have to confess “impure thoughts,” then you might as well commit the “impure deed,” don’t you think? There ought to be a mulligan for those of us who show restraint. If men never have an “impure thought,” that’s not a sign of moral righteousness, that’s a sign of low testosterone. And even low testosterone hasn’t stopped me. How do you control impure thoughts? If I had to take a cold shower every time I had an impure thought, I couldn’t afford my water bill. At the age of 79, all I have left are my impure thoughts. I can’t even watch MSNBC without having impure thoughts about Stephanie Ruhle. Does that make me a monster? Part of any test for male senility ought to include whether they’ve had any impure thoughts lately? I respect the #MeToo movement. I support the #MeToo movement. Surely the #MeToo movement allows impure thoughts?

POLICE REPORT

Authorities seek pair in theft

The Philadelphia Police Department released surveillance footage in hopes of catching the suspects responsible for a Jan. 23 incident in which items were removed from a car. At approximately 5:30 p.m., an unknown white and black female were captured on surveillance video checking vehicle doors in the 200 block of Daly Street. When the suspects discovered an unlocked door, they entered the vehicle and rummaged through the

passenger compartment. After suspect No. 1 unlocked the trunk, police said both suspects walked away and waited for the opportune time to return. The first suspect then walked back to the vehicle, cleaned out the trunk and fled the area in an unknown direction. If you have any information about this crime or this suspect, contact: South Detective Division at 215-686-3013/3014. DC 18-03-004755.

Local basketball standout Rasual Butler killed in crash La Salle University star drafted by Miami Heat dies along with wife in collision in California By Bill Gelman SOUTH PHILLY REVIEW

R

asual Butler, a former South Philly Review Male Athlete of the Year, passed away on Jan. 31 in California. He was 38. The tragic news hit home at La Salle University, where Butler ranks fourth all-time in scoring. “This is a real tragedy to the La Salle community and to all who knew Rasual,” Director of Athletics Bill Bradshaw said in a release. “He was a terrific basketball player, a great teammate and a wonderful person. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the friends and families of Rasual and his wife, Leah.” According to published reports, Butler, a native of 20th and Manton streets, was killed in a singlecar crash in Carson City, Calif., early Wednesday morning. His Range Rover struck a parking meter and a wall. He was pronounced dead at 2:35 a.m. A member of the La Salle Explorers from 1998– 2002, Butler finished his collegiate career with a remarkable 2,125 points to rank fourth in school history behind former National Players of the Year Lionel Simmons, Tom Gola and Michael Brooks. A two-time First Team All-Atlantic 10 selection, Butler averaged 22.1 points per game as a junior to tie for the league lead in scoring. As a senior, the 6–7 forward averaged 20.9 points and 9.0 rebounds and was named to the

A-10’s All-Tournament Team after helping La Salle to a win over top-seeded Temple in the quarterfinals. He was inducted into the La Salle Hall of Athletes in ’08. The Roman Catholic High School product was drafted in the second round of the ’02 NBA Draft by the Miami Heat. He went on to a lengthy 14-

year career that included stints with eight different teams. Butler played in 809 games during his professional career, averaging 7.5 points and 2.4 rebounds per contest. The Miami Heat sent out a Tweet in response to the news.

“We are deeply saddened by the passing of Rasual Butler and his wife, Leah LaBelle. Our sincere condolences, thoughts and prayers go out to the family and many friends of Rasual and Leah. They will be missed.” LaBelle was a former “American Idol” contestant.

Residents flock to cafe to learn about medical pot in Pa. Many people who attended the event did so because they were looking for ways to medicate with cannabis By Tom Beck SOUTH PHILLY REVIEW

R

esidents from all across the Greater Philadelphia area came to the Front Street Cafe Wednesday evening for a medical cannabis card sign up event, hosted by Smokin’ Hot Solutions, a marketing company geared toward marketing marijuana-related companies.“The state of Pennsylvania, as you know, passed medical marijuana laws,” said Smokin’ Hot Solutions CEO Claudia Post. “However, they don’t have a mechanism for people understanding how to navigate the system. I believe in helping people, performing community service and that’s why I’m doing this.” Some attendees showed up out of

curiosity. “I have a lot of friends who having this accessible can be of help to them,” said attendee Maggie Lee, who uses marijuana recreationally, but has no need to use it medically. “The direction that we’re going is the right direction.” However, many people who attended the event did so because they were looking for ways to medicate with cannabis. “I have nerve damage in my lower extremities from a massive heart attack I suffered,” said Joseph, a South Philadelphia resident and school teacher who did not want to reveal his last name. “I came out of surgery and I couldn’t walk. I had no feeling at all in my lower body. And slowly the feeling came back along with the nerve pain. Joseph, who takes OxyContin and

OxyCodone prescribed by his doctor to deal with the pain, is hoping medicinal cannabis can be a healthier replacement. “I’m looking for something that could replace the opioids,” he said. Does he think it will work? “I hope it does. I don’t know. I’m not looking to be high. I want to be able to still function, still work and be able to still drive. What I’m taking right now is managing.” Joseph was especially interested in a distributor selling CBD-infused products, who was present at the event. CBD is a chemical that comes from a hemp plant. Because it does not contain THC, it will not get users high, according to distributor JR Stark. It is important to note, however, that, according to the Food and Drug Administration website, CBD “products are not approved by

FDA for the diagnosis, cure, mitigation, treatment, or prevention of any disease. Consumers should beware purchasing and using any such products.” Southwest Philly resident Tara Brooks came to the event in an effort to seek an alternative treatment to her chronic pain, anxiety and depression. Her doctor prescribed her Klonopin and OxyCodone. “I take the pills, but I also smoke weed and my doctor knows that I smoke weed too,” Brooks told SPR. “The weed calms me better than the pills my doctor prescribes me.” Samir, a veteran of the War in Afghanistan who also did not want his last name revealed, is seeking a medical marijuana card to manage his PTSD. He said his doctor only prescribed him sleeping pills.

“They kept me asleep longer and that’s not what I wanted to do,” said Samir. “I just wanted to go to sleep comfortably on my time without being vigilant. I smoke two hits of Northern Lights and I’m OK. I’m finally sleepy, I finally want to go to sleep – no side effects.” However, Samir, who already uses marijuana recreationally, plans to use marijuana during the daytime too – not just to sleep. “I was looking forward for a drug or more or less a substance that keeps me calm, that makes me go throughout my day more comfortably,” he said. For more information about how to register for a medical marijuana card, which is the first step to obtaining medical marijuana in Pennsylvania, visit medicalmarijuana.pa.gov.

Wing Bowl 26 makes history of its own 127-pound Molly Schuyler sets new record after consuming 501 wings By TOM BECK SOUTH PHILLY REVIEW

F

or the third time in the last five years, 127-pound Molly Schuyler has beaten the boys (and one other woman) at Wing Bowl 26, the latest victory on Friday, Feb. 2. In fact, she set a new record; her 501 wings eaten is the most anybody’s ever consumed at WIP’s annual event, beating Patrick Bertoletti’s 2015 record of 444. She ate 105 more wings than second-place finisher Dave Tiger “Wings & Things” Brunelli. Not only is 501 wings a new Wing Bowl record, it’s also a new world record. Schuyler won $5,000 and a new 2018 Hyundai Sonata. “It was ridiculous,” said Wing Bowl attendee Elias Horiates, who woke up at 3 a.m. to attend the competition, which started at 5 a.m. “I can’t even fathom that, 500 wings – it’s ridiculous.” Here are the final totals for the top five eaters: 501 – Molly Schuyler 396 – Dave Tiger “Wings & Things” Brunelli 388 – Bob “Notorious B.O.B.” Shoudt 262 – Dan “Killer Kennedy” Kennedy 250 – Monty “Moe Train” Wiradilaga Horiatis wasn’t the only fan to be excited about witnessing a new world record. “It didn’t sink in until after the fact, and then I realized we were here for that,” said Keith Seddon, who attended the event after one of his close friends won tickets in a quizzo competition. “We saw that. Five hundred and one – that might be the greatest moment of her life. She won the car! I think I could probably eat 20 wings most. I think that’s all I got.” Others were less impressed with their Wing Bowl experience, which essentially served as a giant pre-Super Bowl pep rally for the Eagles. Well over three-quarters of the attendees donned Eagle green. “I thought last year was a little better,” said attendee Steven Centano with an apathetic look on his face. “I thought it would be more than what it was. I got here around 6 o’clock. I thought it was going to be more entertaining being that the Eagles were in the Super Bowl.” Despite Centano’s reaction, he said he’d still come back next year.

MARK CAROSIELLO

Molly Schuyler waves to the crowd after winning Wing Bowl 26 Friday Feb. 2, at the Wells Fargo Center. Schuyler set a new record at WIP’s annual gala of gluttony by eating a record 501 chicken wings. Schuyler also captured the Wing Bowl 26 ring shown below at left. Below right, special guest and pro wrestling icon Ric Flair helped get the crowd fired up.

FOOD SCENE

Redcrest Fried Chicken has arrived Adam Volk’s newest venture brings something different to the avenue foodie scene By Bill Gelman SOUTH PHILLY REVIEW

H

ADAM VOLK

Redcrest Fried Chicken owner comes out ‘winging.’

ow many pounds of chicken did it take to meet customer demands on Super Bowl Sunday? This is not a riddle. The team at Redcrest Fried Chicken, 1525 S. 11th St., knew they needed a large food supply to tackle the opening weekend demand, which just happened to fall on when the Philadelphia Eagles were playing in the big game. “I’m planning on getting a few hundred pounds of whole birds, and a few hundred pounds of wings, chef/owner Adam Volk said prior to his Feb. 1 opening. “We will definitely be spending some extra time sharpening our knives in the coming days! The 1,000-square-foot casual eatery specializes in two varieties of fried chicken, chicken sandwiches, popcorn chicken, whole wings, side dishes, buttermilk soft

serve ice cream, sundaes and desserts. Signature buttermilk blend (chicken brined with a blend of dried herbs and spices and buttermilk) and spicy curry (chicken is brined with thai red curry, chillies and buttermilk) are the two options, and are available in quarter, half and whole. Some of Volk’s favorite side dishes – french fries, mashed potatoes, mac n cheese, coleslaw, season vegetables and corn pudding – are on the menu, too. Volk is a new addition to the booming Philly foodie scene. He relocated to the area last year with his wife, Emily, and children Ian, 2, and Clara, 7 months old. The family has moved into Emily’s childhood home located blocks away from Redcrest. Her brother, father and uncle helped with the construction and opening. Volk grew up in Montgomery County. The couple met in New York City in 2005. Volk owns and operates three restaurants in New York City, but he wanted to stop commuting to New York City for work. It

just so happens that fried chicken is one of his favorite foods or preferred meals. “I like fried chicken, a lot. If asked one of my favorite foods or preferred meals, it would always be fried chicken, he said. “I wanted to share that love with a larger audience and focus on one product and really do it well. Once the decision was made to move to Philly, Volk knew the East Passyunk Avenue scene was exactly where he wanted to be. “I’ve always thought it was an exciting scene, and I have watched closely how it has flourished over the last several years, he said. “I wanted to be part of that excitement and energy. Volk said he spotted the former seafood space located next to the Singing Fountain after leaving Black and Brew, 1523 E. Passyunk Ave., one day. The opening hours are 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 11 a.m. to midnight Friday and Saturday and 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sunday.

Schools closed on Thursday Usually, when the words “schools closed are uttered in February, the weather is the culprit, When news broke on Monday afternoon that Philadelphia public and parochial schools would be closed on Feb. 8, snow, sleet or freezing rain were not part of the conversation. The Philadelphia Eagles, make that the Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles, had everything to do with it as the City of Philadelphia established it as the date for the public celebration and parade. The Archdiocese of Philadelphia Office for Communications said in a written release the projected city street closures and heavy demands on public transportation in the Philadelphia region are the reasons behind the closure. “The Archdiocese of Philadelphia continues to extend its prayerful congratulations and best wishes to the Philadelphia Eagles on their historic victory in Super Bowl LII! Thank you for bringing the Lombardi Trophy home to the City of Brotherly Love!

Dr. William R. Hite, superintendent of The School District of Philadelphia, also released a statement regarding the parade: “The excitement of the Eagles first Super Bowl victory is a once in a lifetime event. For this reason, we have decided to give our students, teachers and their families the chance to witness history. ‌ On behalf of the students and staff of the School District of Philadelphia, thank you to everyone associated with the Eagles for the difference you make in our schools. You have been a stellar example for Philadelphia’s students and we really appreciate your steadfast commitment to education. Even though we will be closed on Thursday, I want to remind every student, parent and guardian that attending school is absolutely essential. That’s why I want to see everyone in school, on-time and ready to learn on Friday. Just like the Eagles were football heroes on Sunday, I want all of our students to be attendance heroes every day.â€?

Eagles outgun Patriots, 41-33, to win Super Bowl LII Pederson, Foles lead Birds to franchise history past Belichick, Brady dynasty By Al Thompson SOUTH PHILLY REVIEW

T

AL THOMPSON/South Philly Review

Eagles running backs Corey Clement, left, and LeGarret Blount show off the Lombardi Trophy after winning Super Bowl LII Sunday night in Minneapolis.

he Philadelphia Eagles, riding the arm of backup quarterback Nick Foles and an opportunistic defense, defeated the New England Patriots 41-33 in epic fashion and captured the first Super Bowl championship in franchise history. Foles was named MVP of the game after outdueling the sport’s all-time great, Tom Brady, who the day before was named the AP Player of the Year for 2017. The Eagles defense, which had been under siege by Brady the entire second half, made the play of the game when veteran defensive end Brandon Graham stripped-sacked the New England quarterback on a second and two from the Patriots 33-yard line with 2:21 left in the fourth quarter. Rookie defensive end Derek Barnett recovered the fumble. The Eagles ran the ball three times to eat up clock, kicked a 46-yard field goal by Jake Elliott with 1:05 left, then held off Brady’s last gasp effort to save the game. Foles was 28 of 43 for 373 yards, three touchdowns and one interception. He was not sacked. Foles also caught a one-yard touchdown pass from Trey Burton on a daring fourth down trick play that gave the Eagles a 22-12 lead at the half. On the post-game podium, Foles had to pause and compose himself after being asked about delivering a NFL championship to a city that had not had a football title in 58 years. “To be a part of the Philadelphia Eagles first championship,” said Foles, referring to the Super Bowl era. “We’ve all waited a long time to be in this position, to be world champions. The people who bleed green, the people of Philadelphia, the people all across the nation that support the Eagles, they’ve waited a long time. Mr. (Jeffrey) Lurie has waited a long time. Being a part of this, being drafted to Philadelphia, being fortunate enough to come back and be a part of this team, to be a piece of this puzzle, it has been a long time coming, and I know there’s going to be a lot of celebrating tonight.” The game went from a 9-3 score after the first quarter, to an old-fashioned shootout that saw the two teams set a record for most total yards in a game by two teams with 1,151 yards. The Birds scored their first touchdown with 34 seconds left in the first quarter on a 34-yard rope from Foles to wide receiver Alshon Jeffery who made a fingertip catch in the back of the end zone. Elliott missed the extra point. The second touchdown came on a six-play,

65-yard drive that ended with a 21-yard runawayfreight-train run by LeGarrette Blount, who ended up with 90 yards on 14 carries for the day. The Birds final touchdown of the half was the Foles reception from a play that Pederson said he and his staff had named the “Philly Special.” On the play, Foles – in shotgun formation – stepped aside at the last moment, moved up to the line of scrimmage, center Jason Kelce then snapped the ball directly to running back Corey Clement who tossed it to Burton. Burton then threw it to a wide open Foles. The catch gave the Birds a 10-point lead going into intermission. “That’s something we’ve been working on, and Doug (Pederson) and I were talking. I was like, ‘Let’s just run it.’” Foles said. “It was a good time, and the end was a little wider than I thought, so I was like, ‘I really need to sell like I’m not doing anything.’ And it worked. Trey made an amazing throw, right on the money. I just looked it in, and yeah, we’ve repped it for awhile, so I was excited to get it run in the Super Bowl.” The Patriots’ scores in the second quarter came on a 45-yard Stephen Gostkowski field goal and a 26-yard run by James White. The Patriots got their offense back on track the first drive of the third quarter when Brady led New England on an eight-play, 75-yard drive that ended with a five-yard touchdown pass to Rob Gronkowski. The All Pro tight end had been held to one catch for nine yards in the first half. Gronkowski had 68 yards on the drive himself. Foles answered with an 11-play drive that ended with a 22-yard touchdown pass to running back Corey Clement that made the score 29-19. The rookie, who hails from Glassboro in South Jersey, finished with 100 yards on four catches. Clement who was not drafted last year, came to the Eagles as a free agent. He not only made the team but became an integral part of the Birds offense. On Sunday he had 133 all-purpose yards and a touchdown. “We just believed in our preparation,” Clement said. “I have to thank the Philadelphia organization for giving me a shot as an undrafted rookie free agent, being put on such a big stage and believing in me. I can only thank them. Thank you.” After Clement’s touchdown, the Pats were not finished. Brady led his team on a seven-play drive that ended with a 26-yard touchdown from Brady to Chris Hogan. The score now was 29-26. The Birds made the score 31-26 on a 42-yard Elliott field goal after an eight-play 51-yard drive stalled at the Patriots 24-yard line. Then it seemed like the Eagles would be another Brady fourth-quarter victim when the veteran led the Pats on a 10-play drive that ended with anSee SUPER BOWL LII, page 27>>

EAGLES INSIDER

A moment frozen in time (and Minneapolis)

very part of it was perfect. Is perfect. The Philadelphia Eagles, your team, fashioned a winfor-the-ages performance in Super Bowl LII, coming from one point down in the fourth quarter to defeat the New England Patriots 41-33 on Sunday night to capture the first Super Bowl championship in franchise history. The Lombardi Trophy is coming to Philadelphia. “It’s surreal and it’s perfect in the same sense,” quarterback Nick Foles said the morning after winning Most Valuable Player honors with three touchdown passes and one reception for a score (the first time a quarterback has both thrown and caught a touchdown in a Super Bowl game) in the victory. “It really hasn’t hit me all the way. I don’t know when it will.” It’s likely to take days, weeks and months. As the team left Minneapolis, nobody really understood the joy and mayhem happening in Philadelphia.

‘This is for everyone. Everyone shares in this. ...Words can’t describe what I’m feeling. It’s just amazing in every way.’ – Eagles head coach Doug Pederson

None of the players and coaches had lived through decades of suffering. None of them truly knew, or knows, what it means that the Eagles have won the Super Bowl. “I imagine,” head coach Doug Pederson said, “that a lot of people are pretty darn happy.” No question about that. In a game that was one of the very best in the history of the game, the Eagles went toe to toe with the most accomplished head coach (Bill Belichick) and most dominant quarterback (Tom Brady) of the last

Dave

Spadaro

generation in the NFL. The Eagles did it with Foles, who replaced Carson Wentz at quarterback in December after Wentz suffered a season-ending knee injury, and they did it with Pederson, a head coach mocked upon his hiring. They won the Super Bowl while some of their key pieces – left tackle Jason Peters, middle linebacker Jordan Hicks, running back Darren Sproles – were watching from the sidelines after losing the season to injuries. They won the Super Bowl despite being deemed underdogs in all three of their postseason victories. The little guys beat the big guys. “It’s a win for the city of Philadel-

phia,” defensive end Chris Long said. “I’m so happy for all of those fans who have waited so long for a championship. It’s been since 1960? That’s a long, long time.” In the final game of the year, the Eagles played with a lead for most of the game, and then Brady, with 11 playoff fourth-quarter touchdown drives to win games in his storied career, put the Patriots ahead by a point midway through the final period. Foles then engineered a touchdown drive, converting a huge fourth-down play along the way, and finished it off with a scoring pass to tight end Zach Ertz, and the Eagles led by five points.

But Brady had the football and more than two minutes left on the clock to do his magic. Except he didn’t. Defensive end Brandon Graham got to Brady, forced a fumble that Derek Barnett recovered and the Eagles had the football back. A Jake Elliott field goal later, it was time for one more defensive stand, and the Eagles stood. And now they are the champions. And you are the champions. “This is for everyone,” Pederson said. “Everyone shares in this. That’s how we work, and we are so appreciative of this fan base. Words can’t describe what I’m feeling. It’s just amazing in every way.”

SUPER BOWL LII: Eagles overcome high-scoring Patriots offense

<<Continued from page 26 other touchdown pass to Gronkowski, this time from the four-yard line. New England led 33-32 with 9:26 left in the fourth. It was the Pats first lead of the game. But this was the year of the Eagles, it was their time, and this year’s squad would not be denied. Foles led his team on a nail-biting 14-play, 75-yard drive that ended with a 11-yard touchdown pass to tight end Zach Ertz. The pass was reviewed for what seemed like an eternity because Ertz dropped the ball after he crossed the goal line, but the initial touchdown call was upheld, and the Eagles led 38-33 with 2:25 left in the fourth. Could the Eagles finally stop Brady? It took just two plays to find that out when Graham finally solved the Patriots offensive line which had held the Eagles without a sack for the entire game. “We just said, ‘hey, whoever makes the first stop wins the game,’” Graham said. “I’m just happy our offense went down and scored on that second-to-last drive. That fourth-and-one (to Ertz) they got on that drive was big. The offense carried us all night. The rest is history...we’re Super

Bowl champs now, baby.” Brady finished 28 of 48 for 505 yards, three touchdown passes and the fumble. He was sacked once and finished with a quarterback rating of 115.4. Brady was asked if he felt confident when the Patriots got the ball with just over two minutes left that he could drive his team down for a touchdown. “We hit the first one,” Brady said of his eight-yard completion to Gronkowski. “Obviously, the strip sack, and they made a good play. They got a good rush. That’s what they needed, somebody needed to make a play.” They didn’t get that play. Brady’s line was outstanding all day. It turned out the team that made the one real stop ended up winning the game. The Eagles and Foles pasted 41 points on the Patriots and soon-to-be-leaving defensive coordinator Matt Patricia. New England coach Bill Belichick did have a lot of praise for Foles and the Eagles offense. “The Eagles played great offensively – everybody,” Belichick said. “Foles played good, the backs played good, tight end, receivers. It’s a good offensive team.

“They did a good job. They did a good job all the way around,” the five-time Super Bowl Champion coach continued. “They got the best out of all of their skill players. They had a good design and kept us off-balance. The offensive line played well. They were getting pressure on the quarterback. Just give them credit – they did a great job.” Pederson said the reality that the Eagles won the Super Bowl hadn’t hit him yet. “It hasn’t really sunk in, but I’m so excited for that locker room,” Pederson said. “For Mr. Lurie to give me the opportunity to coach this team, and then everything that we’ve been through this season, to get to this point – a lot of people counted us out – but that locker room believed, believed in each other, believed in me. I have a great staff and great players, and we found a way to get it done.” No one can count them out now. The Philadelphia Eagles are Super Bowl Champions.
